BYE Week – Time for much needed rest and healing

The Dolphins enter their BYE week in excellent shape with a 7-3 record good for 1st in the AFC East. The Bills lost last week to the Minnesota Vikings in OT to fall to 6-3, while the NY Jets had their BYE week and are also 6-3. The New England Patriots were also on their BYE week last week and are last in the AFC East at 5-4. This is a very competitive division, and at least at the moment, my early predictions that the Jets may overtake the Patriots is true at the moment. The Jets and Patriots have a showdown this Sunday in Foxborough at 1PM. This is a huge divisional game, they all are really. If the Jets can beat the Patriots in their house the Jets could move up from the #6 seed and give them a 3-1 division record as well as a 6-3 conference record. It would be better for the Dolphins if the Patriots win but I like the Jets in this matchup.

In Week 12, when we return from our BYE week, we play the Texans at home at 1PM. It’s possible, we can have some familiar names back in the lineup, but as of now, nothing is certain. I would think at a minimum that OL Austin Jackson should be back, but odds are he would just be in the rotation, not starting, RT Brandon Shell has played well and OG Robert Jones looked just fine at LG. DB Byron Jones has not yet been activated off of the IR and there have been no indications that he will be. Still, that remains a possibility. The rest must surely be appreciated by all players but especially LT Terron Armstead who has played brilliantly for us this season despite having a painful toe injury and has been the LT we have missed since, well, Laremy Tunsil. Also, guys like Keion Crossen and Kader Kohou can hopefully get healthier and make that secondary more whole.

The following week we have a difficult game against the SF 49ers in San Francisco. It will be a homecoming for RB’s Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, as well as WR’s Trent Sherfield and River Cracraft. After the Niners we stay on the left coast to play the AFC West LA Chargers. After those 2 road games, we finish up our road trip back on the right coast to play our division rival Buffalo Bills. Our last 3 games of the season feature 2 home games, one against the visiting NFC North Green Bay Packers, then a battle in Foxborough against the Patriots and then back home for the season finale against the NY Jets.

I feel like we need to stay healthy, first and foremost, and if we succeed in doing that, keeping #1 and all of his weapons healthy, we can play with anyone. Our defense is starting to play better, and hopefully the more Chubb practices our defense, the better he is, and he makes everyone else better too. Phillips is already seeing results, and that should continue. LB Brennan Scarlett is now healthy and should be back with the team. This is the time to make our run. Finish strong and we should be near the top in the AFC. If we take care of our division rivals and possibly take down the Bills a second time, and sweep the Pats and split with the Jets, we should be AFC East Champs. That of course won’t be easy but just the fact that I can now type this and not feel like it’s ridiculous at all is quite pleasing to me. We’re a good team, a high flying offense, and Jeff Wilson has added another dimension to our offense. We’re a legitimate rushing threat with Wilson and Mostert. The pressure is off Mostert now, he’s never been a high volume carry guy, so he can stay fresh and give a nice punch when Wilson is out. I know some of you think Byron Jones will never suit up and play in a Dolphins uniform this season, I’m still holding out hope. I have no idea what kind of shape he’ll be in and if he can even help us, but he’s always been a solid cover corner, and what team couldn’t use thew boost of getting a player back of his caliber healthy and fresh near the end of the season? Let’s hope!

Last game home against the Browns, bye week and then home against the Texans before we play our toughest stretch on the road at SF, LAC and BUF. Looking at it from a pragmatic viewpoint we have to go 2-2 at least in our next 4 games. Of course we want it to better than that.

  4. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Fingers crossed that we get Byron Jones back after our bye-week. That would be the shot in the arm our Defense could really use, especially after acquiring Brandon Chubb.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I can’t help but think Sam Madison and Pat Surtain have had something to do with how well our corners who were not projected to be much are playing. We’ve played a lot of corners this year.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yeah, man, no doubt! Gotta love how our young CBs have risen to the occasion after all the injuries we’ve had, especially the undrafted #DarthKader! 🙂

Me too… I sense Sam and Pat have had much to do with that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They were both man coverage corners. That’s what we do. Our coaching has been on a different level than in past years.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      23. KADER KOHOU, MIAMI DOLPHINS
Another rookie cornerback who deserves a place here, Kader Kohou has had to play a ton this year due to all of the injuries in Miami’s secondary. And he has performed well. He is currently PFF’s No. 14-graded cornerback this season (76.5), as he has yet to allow a single touchdown on 417 snaps. Kohou has let up a few big plays in the passing game, but he has performed exceptionally well for a rookie undrafted free agent.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Every corner gets beat here and there. It’s not easy.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Correct, but Kader is playing well above and beyond for an undrafted rook! That cat has MAJOR promise… think Brent Grimes, another undrafted CB: very rare air for that position.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. We had another one in Trill Williams. He was going to start boundary opposite Howard with Needham in the slot more. We lost them both for the season.

    undrafted free agent or UDFA

Is it just me, or is that kind of redundant? I mean, if one was undrafted, they got into the league as a free agent, right? Am I missing something? And why is that hitting me just now?

    ————-
As you would say, BINGO! Trill Williams is another who was looking great prior to landing on season-ending IR. I also believe that many Phin fans became to appreciate Needham’s play over his journey with us… who also landed on season-ending IR.

Can’t believe so many of our CBs have landed on IR or in Byron’s case, has yet to see the field this year. And all the while, X has been dealing with a nagging groin(s) injury most of the season.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Gotta believe it’s been a testament to Sam and Pat’s coaching.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our secondary has been hit hard with injuries. I think that’s why our defense has struggled. Now we need to regroup and say what’s the best way for us to play down the stretch? I’m not sure about zone but the quarters defense is kind of a hybrid of man and zone.

Our defense gets off to slow starts a lot. But somehow they tighten up in the 2nd half. Feed off of that and let’s stop a team on their first drive.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think we’re finally on the cusp of making that happen after the bye-week… to stop teams on their first drive, and consistently.

We should want Zach Thomas to get Trey Flowers and Byron Jones in that hyperbolic chamber of his. 🙂

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

You know, one rule that I never understood is you are allowed a roster of 53, all of who you have to pay. You can’t dress all of them for the game, only 46 of them. You have to pay 7 of them to sit on their ass and watch.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, another big part of how our team plays would be to build on the running game with Mostert/Wilson. Either one fits with what we run. That will make our play-action passing game dominant.

The extended versions of all 3 movies are each 30-45 minutes longer. It really adds a lot to the story, but they all clock in around 3 1/2 to 4 hrs long.

We did Fellowship last weekend, Two Towers this weekend, and we’ll finish up with Return of the King next weekend. We have fun watching them every few years or so, but man, they take some commitment.

    ___________________________________

Good to see your great taste extends beyond the stove Kong. Love LoTR. Read the hobbit when I was an ankle-biter and was hooked. I have been known to do the Tolkein Iron-man during holiday periods. 3 extended Hobbits + extended LOTR 1-3. True commitment 😉.

If Jackson made the hobbit so long he could have got 9 movies out of LoTR easily, surely? No Tom Bombadil either? (Arguably not a great loss)

I presume you have the actual disc set? For years I never watched them. I didn’t want to look behind the curtain. When I did I devoured them too. Jackson is the dogs bollocks in my book, as are his 🎥.

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Iron-man involves back to back viewing with feeding, call of nature and sleeping breaks – you need a well stocked larder and some pre-prepped meals

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I can’t imagine a better retelling of LoTR than Peter Jackson’s trilogy. Near perfect. We have the disc set and watched all the extras when we first got them, but we try to keep those as pristine as possible, so when just watching the movies, we watch on HBO instead (or is it Hulu? IDK, one of those two).

My son did a really impressive 3D print of Treebeard, about a foot tall, and gave it to my wife for her birthday, so she was keen to take in his color scheme from Towers. I can’t wait to see it when she’s done.

I mean, I understand that the inactive list is supposed to make the game fairer. If one team has 5 nicked players who can’t play but aren’t bad enough to go on IR, but the other team has only 2, then the other team has a distinct advantage.
Without the inactive rule, teams would either try to force guys to suit up that should not, due to injury, or force them onto IR, which endangers their season, the team’s season, cap chaos, etc.
7 seems like a lot though, as it’s more than 1 out of every 10 players.

I think teams should be allowed to not count the P, PK, and LS in the 53 and 46 rule, as long as those players do not play any other position in the game, except maybe with a fake punt exception.
