BYE Week – Time for much needed rest and healing

The Dolphins enter their BYE week in excellent shape with a 7-3 record good for 1st in the AFC East. The Bills lost last week to the Minnesota Vikings in OT to fall to 6-3, while the NY Jets had their BYE week and are also 6-3. The New England Patriots were also on their BYE week last week and are last in the AFC East at 5-4. This is a very competitive division, and at least at the moment, my early predictions that the Jets may overtake the Patriots is true at the moment. The Jets and Patriots have a showdown this Sunday in Foxborough at 1PM. This is a huge divisional game, they all are really. If the Jets can beat the Patriots in their house the Jets could move up from the #6 seed and give them a 3-1 division record as well as a 6-3 conference record. It would be better for the Dolphins if the Patriots win but I like the Jets in this matchup.

In Week 12, when we return from our BYE week, we play the Texans at home at 1PM. It’s possible, we can have some familiar names back in the lineup, but as of now, nothing is certain. I would think at a minimum that OL Austin Jackson should be back, but odds are he would just be in the rotation, not starting, RT Brandon Shell has played well and OG Robert Jones looked just fine at LG. DB Byron Jones has not yet been activated off of the IR and there have been no indications that he will be. Still, that remains a possibility. The rest must surely be appreciated by all players but especially LT Terron Armstead who has played brilliantly for us this season despite having a painful toe injury and has been the LT we have missed since, well, Laremy Tunsil. Also, guys like Keion Crossen and Kader Kohou can hopefully get healthier and make that secondary more whole.

The following week we have a difficult game against the SF 49ers in San Francisco. It will be a homecoming for RB’s Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, as well as WR’s Trent Sherfield and River Cracraft. After the Niners we stay on the left coast to play the AFC West LA Chargers. After those 2 road games, we finish up our road trip back on the right coast to play our division rival Buffalo Bills. Our last 3 games of the season feature 2 home games, one against the visiting NFC North Green Bay Packers, then a battle in Foxborough against the Patriots and then back home for the season finale against the NY Jets.

I feel like we need to stay healthy, first and foremost, and if we succeed in doing that, keeping #1 and all of his weapons healthy, we can play with anyone. Our defense is starting to play better, and hopefully the more Chubb practices our defense, the better he is, and he makes everyone else better too. Phillips is already seeing results, and that should continue. LB Brennan Scarlett is now healthy and should be back with the team. This is the time to make our run. Finish strong and we should be near the top in the AFC. If we take care of our division rivals and possibly take down the Bills a second time, and sweep the Pats and split with the Jets, we should be AFC East Champs. That of course won’t be easy but just the fact that I can now type this and not feel like it’s ridiculous at all is quite pleasing to me. We’re a good team, a high flying offense, and Jeff Wilson has added another dimension to our offense. We’re a legitimate rushing threat with Wilson and Mostert. The pressure is off Mostert now, he’s never been a high volume carry guy, so he can stay fresh and give a nice punch when Wilson is out. I know some of you think Byron Jones will never suit up and play in a Dolphins uniform this season, I’m still holding out hope. I have no idea what kind of shape he’ll be in and if he can even help us, but he’s always been a solid cover corner, and what team couldn’t use thew boost of getting a player back of his caliber healthy and fresh near the end of the season? Let’s hope!

and thank you MF13 for the disclaimer you posted earlier.

I think it’s important for us all to remember that we are all first and foremost Americans who love our country. As independent thinkers and adults each with our own matrix of experience, we will have disagreements about the nuances of being governed, which is a thing no one particularly enjoys.

I respect you for being a big enough man to state publicly that you hold no malice against those whose philosophies concerning the extremely complex world of national politics differ a bit from yours.

You and I agree on many things, big things, truth, justice, freedom, and the American way. And the best team in the NFL.

    Go Dolphins. Go USA.

Naples, as I looked at all these PFF posts … what jumped out at me was the number of players (rookies and vets) who were UNDRAFTED that are making big contributions throughout our roster.

      Robert Jones

When I heard one our OL was hurt I’d hoped, if it had to be one it was Eichenberg, didn’t think they’d miss him at all

  39. steveccnv says:

Fins double digit favorite against Houston

Only time out of 10, since 2000, that we lost in that role was against Houston in 2003 opener, start of 2nd half Rickey ran all the way down to the 1 yard line, which would’ve broken the game open, play was called back for a phantom hold by OL, we did nothing the rest of the way

    • CavalierKong says:

If we come out flat, if we don’t play our best game, if the Texans put forth one of their better efforts…we should still win fairly easily.

I can’t recall a game in the last 10-15 years I felt more confident about.

      • Ken says:

Confidence is a dangerous emotion 😬

      • CavalierKong says:

Yep, no doubt, we’ve been conditioned over the last 20 years that the other shoe drops right when we start to feel good about our team, lol.

I decided over the bye, I’m putting that little voice warning me to beware into a box and crushing it. This team is one of the best in the NFL and the Texans don’t belong on the same field as us.

  40. naplesfan2010 says:

If you look at the PFF grades by position to tell us what we need to draft, it has to CB on defense and TE on offense.

  41. naplesfan2010 says:

    Rhino
    I know, right?
So that is great in a way, but in another sense, it shows we are still weak enough in certain areas that we must resort to that level of player for quality minutes.
Can you win a SB with 15% of your snap count going to players nobody wanted to draft?

  42. The Flying Pig says:

  43. naplesfan2010 says:

Houston is absolutely a trap game for us. Worst record in the league, but a veteran coach and several good skill players make them dangerous to a team coming off a bye and looking ahead to a wicked road trip.

  44. The Flying Pig says:

Might have to take a 14 million dollar cap hit this offseason to save 4 million in 2023 Nd 8 million in 2024

Jones isn’t doing nothing for us this year
Not sure he wants to be on the team

  45. naplesfan2010 says:

A concerning thing to me from this weekend’s games
    is that the stupid steelers
did not help us with the Bengals,
who are now the last playoff team in the current scenario.
(in other words, our wild card round opponent)

  60. Rhino says:

    Kong,
regarding the “other shoe” … as an A’s and Warriors fan I was conditioned for that feeling over the course of 40 years. To be honest, it wasn’t until Warriors made the Finals two years in a row that I stopped “waiting and expecting something bad”… That feeling hasn’t gone away with A’s.

Over the last 20 years the Dolphins have done all the things that make a fan base expect something bad … HOWEVER, after Tua came back a lit it up I’m feeling that as long as he is playing I think we can beat anybody in the league.

    • CavalierKong says:

Right there with ya, Rhino. I’m a long suffering Kings fan, so I feel ya on the A’s.

It just feels different with this team. And I know we’ve said that before, but I don’t care. It feels different, I’m rolling with it, and I’ve started actually enjoying Dolphins games again.

When the Browns drove down and scored on their first drive (just like every other team that plays us, lol), I didn’t even blink an eye. I felt confident that it didn’t matter if we went down a score or even two, we’d come right back. And we did.

I honestly don’t have a single shred of worry about the Texans…unless Tua goes down, but I’m not going to think about that, lol.

  61. Ken says:

    Broncos waived Melvin Gordon

  62. naplesfan2010 says:

I am like anybody else and love to look at the ceiling, because we’ve had such low expectations for so long that it is a blast to think of how high or far we can go.
    BUT
In a way, playoffs are about a team’s floor.
or maybe the main 3 skills players’ floor and the defense’s floor.
    or something like that.
What level of production or types of things can your stars guarantee they can do, almost no matter what the competition level gets to?

  63. naplesfan2010 says:

This floor will keep a game close so the team can capitalize on a turnover or other mistake by the other team or use one or two giant plays by your guys to win the game.

  64. naplesfan2010 says:

The other crucial factor a team needs to have if they are to be considered in the top tier and to win in the playoffs is having the QB and PK to be rock solid in the clutch.

  65. Ken says:

  66. naplesfan2010 says:

    so last part first
    uh oh
Sanders needs to get it together immediately
because not only can a missed FG lose a game,
if the coach does not trust the PK,
it limits the play-calling and affects timeout usage negatively.
Playoff teams are so evenly matched that a shaky PK is doom.

  67. naplesfan2010 says:

    However,
I believe at QB we have a clutch performer in crunch time.
Tua has excellent production in the RZ, in the 4th Quarter, and on 3rd down.
    All three!!!
That’s one reason why I think we can go far in the playoffs.

    The other is the HC.
McDaniel has shown that no opposing coach makes him panic.
He has such a command of his playbook that he is able to win in multiple ways.
An opponent can’t take away what we do best,
because McDaniel will just adjust faster than the defense can.
    How?
Just look at the quote above where he gives credit to his players for this.

Him saying that means he has got them trained to do *this* if the D does *that*
The poor D is on their heels reacting after the fact on almost every play.

  68. naplesfan2010 says:

    Back to the first thing.

    What can our stars guarantee?

    Speed for one thing.
Nothing except injury can make our fast guys not fast,
and we have multiple fast guys all over the field.
Not just fast, but fastest in the league, too.

Our level of speed stresses the opponents on every play,
which translates to fatigue both physical and mental as the game goes on.

  69. naplesfan2010 says:

Accuracy by Tua is the other guarantee.
While watching the jest patsies game, I saw many off target throws.
Those give the defense rest, because they get some stops they didn’t even deserve.

Tua’s accuracy means that rarely happens.

This is what Tyreek was trying to explain when he said Tua is more accurate than Mahomes.

You guys know what he meant.

But the average fan or national copy and paste writer rolled their eyes.

  70. stangerx says:

Opening line has the phins favored against the Texans next Sunday by 11.5 points.

Previously, largest spread in favor of the Phins since the start of the 2004 season was 10.5.

  71. naplesfan2010 says:

    case in point
and Mahomes is an awesome QB, no doubt about it,
but he missed 14 throws last night. (FOURTEEN!!!)
    59% completion rate

That means 41% … INcompletion rate.
More that 4 times out of 10
they got nothing out of the play.
That’ll disrupt the rhythm and contract the playbook.

That means the play caller was thinking about what he would call next,
but he had to change it due to Mahomes picking up NOTHING 14 times.

Fourteen times guys ran their routes, and nobody caught a ball.
14 times the defense got a freebie.

Now some were drops, some were great plays by the DB, some were throwaways because of pressure, whatever, but still … 6 and 4 is almost half and half,
a coin flip as to whether the team moves down the field or not.

Inaccuracy by the QB is a great gift to the Defense and puts doubt in the heads of the WRs and OC.

I saw jest WRs shaking their head or showing other body language of frustration.

    Tua’s WRs all look delighted!!!
That really helps morale, which you need in a Super Bowl.

    ok
    rant of optimism completed.
But damn the highlights reel on this season has been fun to watch!

  73. naplesfan2010 says:

    PS:
Emmanuel Sanders says we’re the “scariest team in the league right now.”

    • Ken says:

We are the best offense in the league. No one has a better combination of weapons including WRs , RBs and TE right now than we do. There are teams that might have better at one of the positions but not combined. And we have Tua who is playing lights the fuck out

  74. naplesfan2010 says:

Tua now 2nd in Vegas odds for MVP.

  75. Mike E. says:

I don’t trust Sanders at all at this point. I don’t see how the coaches can either. If he goes on a positive run it would be great, that’s what he needs. Get his confidence back

  76. mf13ss says:

    Naples,

    Excellent posts today, as usghe!

What really caught my eye was X’s PFF numbers… he’s so very clearly unhealthy with his groins. Hopefully, this week of rest will help him heal a bit. It’s also a real bummer that Byron Jones will still be unavailable for us this week, but it’s the Texans. Perhaps we’re giving him one more week to heal before activating him for our stretch run? We’ll see…

  77. mf13ss says:

Seriously think about this, and tell me how you’d answer…

If I were to have told y’all just before the regular season began that…

    — Tua would get concussed and miss several games, plus there would be talk of his retirement from the game
    — Byron Jones would be unavailable to us for well over half a season (may still miss the season)
    — Zero running game until just after the halfway point of the season
    — Ogbah would go on season-ending IR just after the halfway point of the season
    — Our Defense would be one of the worst in the NFL halfway through the season
    — Xavien Howard would be playing injured through most of the season and even miss a game
    — Terron Armstead would be playing injured through most of the season and even miss a game
    — We’d lose all of Brandon Jones, Nik Needham, and Trill Williams to season-ending injuries before the halfway point of the season
    — We’d be down to our 3rd string QB at some point and re-sign Reid Sinnett to be our backup for a game
    — Jason Sanders would be having the worst season of his career, missing many FGs and XPs
    — Mike Gesicki would be having the worst season of his career, barely registering on the stat sheet every game
    — Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg would be largely injured and IR’d, respectively

BUT DESPITE all of the above, that we’d be sitting at 7-3, 1st place in the AFC East, and the #2 AFC playoff seed come 11/21/2022… what would you have told me?!! 😀

    • mf13ss says:

I would have told myself to get drug tested and our record would be more like 3-7, not 7-3.

That we’re 7-3 though it all, it’s a testament to just how GRAND Coach McDaniel has been. He gets my vote for NFL COACH of the YEAR.

      • naplesfan2010 says:

precisely the reason … you are spot on

He’s not just a dynamic motivator,
not just a patient teacher of football,
not just a genius playbook writer,
not just a fresh yet strong PR/press corps delight,
not just a personnel grouping genius,
not just an ace recruiter of staff,
not just a master organizer of the practice schedule
and not just cool as ice when under pressure,

        he’s all of those.

      • mf13ss says:

        Thank you, Naples.

    • steveccnv says:

I would’ve said, Jackson and Eichenberg on IR is addition by subtraction, anything is possible now 😛

But USA plays Wales at 2pm today

    Let’s go USA!

US deserved 1st half lead but Wales deserved equaliser. The big one 1pm ET Friday 😉.

  79. Mike E. says:

M – it’s astounding how good we’ve been with all of our injuries. Armstead and Williams have been better or as good advertised. Our depth has been tested in the secondary, O-line and most recently, D-line. More importantly, we lost our starting QB, backup QB and 3rd string QB at one time or another and 2 of the 3 at others. No one berates the O-line anymore, you have to say McDaniel and his staff have done an amazing job to have us where we are, and of course major props to Grier for putting this roster together

    • steveccnv says:

Last year worst OL in NFL, this year 100% better, having Williams and Armstead has helped tremendously, but last year the O as a whole wasn’t in sinc from one unit to the next

Coaches were absolutely clueless, after the opening drive

Get coaches in with a clue and Tyreek everything changes

If MM was our coach last year, Tua would’ve been great last year too

    • mf13ss says:

Yessir! Coach McDaniel has navigated this ship through some really patchy fog and missed the icebergs. COY (Coach of the Year), IMO.

  80. CavalierKong says:

Dolphins have won 27 straight games when they lead at halftime

  81. stangerx says:

Is this really a time to bring out the torches and pitchforks?

“For the season, Sanders has missed three extra points (including two against Cleveland) and four field goals (the 29-yarder against Chicago and three others topping 50 yards).”

    • naplesfan2010 says:

Minnesota, KC, and Miami are exactly one point apart in points allowed.
      # 19-22
Dallas is first, almost exactly one touchdown better than we are.

  82. bailbondmike says:

Our defense still concerns me. We have given up 30+ in 3 of our 10 games and 24+ in 6 of 10 games. We have given up 76 points (over 25 ppg) in our last 3 games vs 3 teams with significant losing records.

We barely won the games in 3 out of our last 4 wins, all to teams who have losing records. Our bend but don’t break is not working. We are bending and breaking.

Hopefully our secondary continues to step up and the addition of Chubb and increased QB pressure will generate more QB turnovers.

  85. Mike E. says:

Stanger – it’s a concern, a legit one. If he doesn’t pull out of the funk, you want to go into a playoff run with a kicker who has no confidence?

    • stangerx says:

I’m concered as well. Just wanted to put out the stats on how deep the “funk” runs. From some comments you’d think he can’t make a kick.

  86. bailbondmike says:

That stat line on the Jets second half is funny. Though the Pats defense is playing well. They have only given 23 points over their last 3 games. Of course, that was vs the Jets twice and the colts.

Through 10 games, the Pats are the #2 scoring defense (169 points) in the league (not counting 49ers who play tonight, 163 after 9 games).

There are only 10 teams who have given up less than 200 points.

Bills are #4 at 174 points.
Jets are #8 at 186 points.

Three of the top 10 scoring defenses are in the AFCE. We need ours to play better.

    • bailbondmike says:

I didn’t want to look and see where we were ranked but we have given up 241 points in 10 games.

      • Mike E. says:

The Ravens game (38), Jets (40), and the Bears (32) were our defensive letdowns. Two of those were running QB’s who shredded us. The Jets game was just a bad game all around, 2 turnovers by Skylar, 1 INT, 1 fumble, the Jets ran and threw on us. Otherwise the defense hasn’t been too bad
The lack of pressure and sacks has been an issue but we seem to be improving there. Also, getting Kohou and Crossen back and potentially Byron Jones will help too

    • naplesfan2010 says:

Minnesota, KC, and Miami are exactly one point apart in points allowed.

  87. Tim Knight says:

The Jets had 2 yards of offense in the 2nd half? LOL

  88. The Flying Pig says:

    You don’t see this everyday

  89. pheloniusphish says:

I’m not afraid of any team left in Miami’s schedule. I said before season started that Miami would win the AFCE and I’m sticking to it.

  90. pheloniusphish says:

Neither the Pats nor the Jets are very good teams. Buffalo is vulnerable.Chargers are mediocre at best. Don’t know why the 9’ers are being hyped so much.

  91. Ken says:

Totally enjoyed listening to the Robert Saleh press conference on my ride home 😃

  92. boulderfinfan says:

Lol @ 2.77 inches per play. That’s insane.

All the Jets fans were calling in to WFAN making the case for the Jets to get Jimmy G in the offseason

  95. The Flying Pig says:

Is it just me or has there been a lack of media coverage that the SB champs Rams are 3-7 this year?

  96. naplesfan2010 says:

    Did you guys see this?
    Alain Poupart says
Tua’s next 150 passes could all be incompletions,
and he’d still have a higher passer rating than Zach Wilson.

    or
Tua’s next 20 passes could all be interceptions and, yep you guessed it,
he’d still have a higher passer rating than Zach Wilson.

  97. naplesfan2010 says:

Chargers fans are all over social media
saying “hey is Herbert supposed to drive down the field
    in the 4th quarter
    twice
    to win the game
    with no picks?”

    uhhh …
Tua’s defense got his team down by 21
    in the 4th quarter,
and he brought his team back and won by 4,
    so yeah,
if Herbert is to be thought of
as being as good as Tua,
    thennnn ….
