Chiefs loss was some salt in the wound cuz with a win we’d be #1 in AFC with 5 games to go. 😣

Chargers are banged up as much as any team in the league. They are not as scary as much as they seemed early in the year.
at Buff could be for the division.
GB playing better all of a sudden, and Pats/Jets are tough outs as division foes..,
BUT, 4-1 over last 5 is very realistic … 12-5 season (?) If this happens I think ALL of us would have taken it regardless of the playoff spot.
I would love for fans to get a home playoff game, though!

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think we will see Tua and Waddle added to the injury report for ankle issues.

  3. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Looks like we may still be cheering for Pats to be spoilers … vs Bengals (week 16) and at Bills (week 18).

  4. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I too take solace from the 2 TD passes.
They show we have not lost our quick strike ability.

I also saw open WRs on many plays that Tua normally connects.
If Tua normally hit on only 55% of his passes,
    I’d be worried.

If our WRs could not get open,
    I’d be worried.

If we had run the ball 25 times for 35 yards, or something like that,
    I’d be worried.
(We ran it 8 for 32 yds, which is 4+ per carry,
which is not bad at all against the #1 D in the league.)

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    I thought besides Bosa,
their LBs won the game for them.
    Greenlaw and Warner just dominated.

They beat people up, especially our 2 small WRs.

It might be better for us if the Bengals help eliminate NE and then win their division, because we still have to play NE up there, and we hold the tie breaker with the Ravens but not the Bengals.

Kong – in reply to your 9:42 from last page (got washed away in page trun)

Thanks Kong – you saved me a whole lot of typing there. Agree with all the above. I’d add – not only does December January get more pressurised where the cream starts to rise, but the weather plays a part. You have to stay on the field on 3rd down (especially 3rd and short) and get the other team off the field on third down. We are capable of spectacular plays on both sides of the ball, but not consistently. There are teams who can also make spectacular plays but will keep that up for most of the regular season and play-offs.

Our running game yesterday was weak at best (and under-used). SF took Tua’s favourite middle away much more than other teams have done and he looked bewildered. They got to him a lot and he started hearing footsteps. He tried too hard, too often. Even coach blamed himself.

    “I fucked up”

    — Barstool Sports (@barstoolsports) December 4, 2022

Wilson Jr was off. Waddle was injured. Armstead was out. We had a lot of adversity and didn’t overcome it. Having said all that, saw a couple of Tweets:

“Last year, the Bills played the league worst Jaguars and lost 6-9 in a game that Josh Allen threw for 264 yds no TD and 2 INT. Good teams have bad games. Great teams have bad games. This is the NFL, grow up and realize if we don’t look perfect every week the team isn’t cooked”.

“We played the worst game we have played all year and still came close to beating one of the hottest teams in the NFL. It can’t look like this the rest of the season, but one game doesn’t change my opinion of this team. 8-4 and firmly in the playoffs at this moment”.

I too think this was just one game. But measured against “winning it all”, we probably have too many deficiencies. Marcel tweeted this mid-game “Dolphins’ rank 24th in 3rd down defense this season and it’s showing today. 49ers are 5/9 now on third down and have converted on their past three attempts”

We have got to where we are today (still with a healthy record, and in a play-off spot) with an exciting fast paced attack and stopping the other team when it really, really mattered more often than not. That attack, though, is not unstoppable at times (as we’ve seen) and it still too one-dimensional. And if the D has a bad day and doesn’t come up with that stop we are out of the race in the play-offs.

I love watching this team. It’s relevant and exciting. It’s not where it needs to be yet to go all the way. We also may not have the ammo to get us over the hump. I’m not gonna get too stressed about that though. Que sera, sera. There’s a lot of good people trying to get us there and fingers crossed they can.

If nothing else, that got the MVP and unstoppable nonsense to go away and some realism may just be what we need to start another run. The great thing is that with a healthy #10 and #17, we should be in most games right to the death.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Cheers, UK. It’s good to be relevant, and debate things on the board like the loss yesterday after 5 straight wins, instead of debating just how bad we are – like we’ve had to do the last 15 years, lol.

And even with everything that happened yesterday, we still had an opportunity to take the lead in that game in the 4th.

  9. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

There is still a path to the #1 seed despite yesterday… it of course will require catching KC… If we manage to win out, Chiefs have to go to LVRaiders to finish the season, and Raiders (like Det and Pitt) seem to have found themselves. But, with 5 weeks to go the scenarios are still to complex to worry about until we win our own games. 🙂

  10. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    We have a rookie HC.
He’s never even been the play caller before.
He’s never coached the defense before or the STs.
Just yelling “f’n fix that” on the sidelines during a game
is not going to cut it.

Why did he not try to run Wilson more?

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    ALSO
The refs called several really ticky tack calls against us.
(especially the holding call on Hunt)
Even the announcers in the booth said so multiple times.

  12. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wilkins was a beast yesterday, and I think Kohou may be the best CB on the team now.

  13. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I was furious yesterday, mostly because I have so many Niners friends, but I’m more accepting of the loss today. We had a subpar game. I fully expect us to come out and play a very good game against the Chargers.

We’re off to Hawaii. Cheers 🙂

    Steve
I get that about the tie breaker, but I was not proposing a 3 way.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Looking at the scenarios, there’s 1 team from the North, the 6-6 Chargers, none from South, and 3 from East which div tie breakers would prevail first, so not much chance of a 3 team tie for WC

  16. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    I thought besides Bosa,
their LBs won the game for them.
    Greenlaw and Warner just dominated.

They beat people up, especially our 2 small WRs.
    ————————
Naples, I am glad you brought this up. I think those 2 also affected Tua in a way. Even though the WR’s he was missing wear open to an extent. Those LB’s were playing deep, especially on 2nd and 10 or 3rd and long. They were, at times 15 to 20 yards down field taking away those deep crossers.

MM should have called more stuff underneath and more running plays. I bet no one is more frustrated than RB Jeff Wilson getting only 1 carry vs his old team.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Call out MM, when he’s to blame, he’ll tell you as much

That’s what’s so dangerous about our O, even when guys aren’t playing up to par, there’s still corrections that can be made to get around it

Once MM really figures things out…and it could happen this season

  17. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lose to Buff, beat jets, cheats and LAC and we should be fine for WC at 11-6

Beat LAC or Cheats and that coupled with 1 more win eliminates them from our WC hopes, beat both and go 10-7 and we’re in

The outcome for Sunday appeared in a tweeted vision.

    https://twitter.com/buitengebieden/status/1598453559267414035

Herbert, the long-haired sheep, is directionless, whilst Tua, the GOAT, stays on top.

  19. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Baker Mayfield waived. What a dramatic fall over the last few years. I bet 49ers will stick with 7th rd QB over this former #1. lol

  20. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Turnovers seem to be strongly correlated to our record:

    8 wins – total of 4 turnovers with a +8 ratio
    4 losses – total of 11 turnovers with a -10 ratio

Take care of the ball and good things will happen.

Those LBs getting deep is what caused so many high throws by Tua.
Cleveland tried to do that too if you recall,
but we scorched them underneath and with a rushing attack.

I can’t figure out why we did not do that against SF.

Maybe McDaniel was just as nervous as Tua.

  25. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I kinda forgot what NON VICTORY Monday felt like 😕…. Phindog told me I am not allowed to attend any more games in person , as we are 0-2 this year .. I don’t think I will be needing to apologize after the Chargers game …

  26. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    Aloha Cav.. have a blast

  27. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Feeling better today. Two OTs out, playing best defense, Tua has bad game. Hoping Armstead comes back very soon.

What are the thoughts on teams we likely beat? I think Chargers, Pats, and Packers are very, very winnable. All three have major issues we can exploit easily. I think the Jets are our nemesis this year with the perfect counter to our strengths and weaknesses. They have another amazing defense, and their QB isn’t a 7th rounder so I think it will be hard unless Wilson starts. The Bills, I don’t see us sweeping.

  28. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

    Whale shite!

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I don’t think he’s worth keeping. He’s always injured and plays poorly when not. Grier may need an OL coach to help him with drafting OL.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Wow I didn’t know Eric fisher was a free agent

I know he’s past his prime but this is a former all pro OT
I would rather give a vet a shot than a young guy

He tore his Achilles in 2020 and didn’t come back strong in 2021

So maybe in 2022 he can Be a little of what he used to be

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Win some upcoming winnable games, get some starters healthy and back in the lineup.. start the playoffs with a better lineup than we have fielded since week 2 and see where we go … it’s a fun season with some ugly downs and some euphoric highs … FINS UP

  32. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Fisher never lived up to his billing. He struggled at LT but did well when they moved him to RT then he got hurt

  33. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Fisher was also all pro in 2018.
He’s 6’7.5, 306 and did 27 reps at the Combine.

  34. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Fisher won a Super Bowl
and was coached by Andy Reid,
    so he knows stuff.

  35. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

He’s *only* 31, which is not that old for an OL.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

There is a reason why he was not on a roster. Don’t get me wrong I like the signing but he is not Terron Armstead. He is a mid tier player at this point

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No one is comparing him to Armstead, we have issues on the OL and need reinforcements

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He tore his Achilles in 2020
He was a very good OL when that occurred
He missed the super bowl and the chiefs were eaten alive by Bucs Bc of it

        He signed with the colts
He wasn’t good with the colts

So don’t read to much into him being a free agent now

Maybe he is fisher from the colts
But also maybe he can be fisher from chiefs

Maybe he was just slow to recover from an Achilles injury
        Or maybe he never recovers

But he was a good Ot before the injury

      • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I don’t know much about this stuff but how likely is it to find a top tier OL player floating around? They don’t grow on trees in Tim’s backyard.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This one was actually in a tree in Tim’s backyard

  36. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Actually I just read that fisher started 15 games for the colts in 2021

That colts OL was pretty good last year

  37. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Read a lot of the comments and seems the consensus was Tua was just off yesterday. Could not agree more. He plays like he has all year and we win. Have an anology on that.

As Mike E said — he was just too amped up. Like hitting a softball or baseball. You try to muscle it too much and stuff is jerky, the connection just not there. Has to be smooth and fluid. That’s when it works.

High throw after high throw was bugging me out. Tua wasn’t trying to do them that way….. he just wasn’t relaxed.

  39. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Yips v amps…lol.

I don’t think Tua had the yips. There was no reason to be yippy. His first play was a strike for a 75 yd TD!!!

His next 6 incompletions he had no pressure, a free pocket, and missed badly on every throw.

Amped!!! He was off the charts wacked out….T on T on T….I was like WTF? These are 5-10-15 yard easy precision throws….lol!!!

Time to move on to next game…and no more fucking excuses…lol

  40. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I still think the D was part of the TOP issue. I don’t discount the 3 and outs by our O contributing to this challenge.

However, allowing long sustained drives contributes immensely to your own demise in TOP…lol….get the other team off the fucking field….it’s your job

    • What I’m seeing from our defense is even when we get pressure the QB can still find an open receiver. That and our tackling is very up and down. We had 5 guys on Deebo for an 8 yard loss and he picked up 5 to make it only a minus 3. I’ve seen stuff like that too often. Every defender has to improve their tackling technique. They have to go for the legs, not flailing at the upper body.

  41. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

And, I don’t know why MM doesn’t try running the ball more….I don’t get it….they seem to killing it when given the opportunity. Maybe, I’m hallucinating….lol

  42. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I suspect we won’t really see a good running game until 2023

  44. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Strictly my opinion… if we didn’t have backups starting at the Tackle positions, we’d have won the game yesterday.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, that means if we had a healthy Terron Armstead starting yesterday, we’d probably have won the game.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We NEED reliable bookend Tackles (availability > playability) to make this thing work. Otherwise, we’ll get blown out of the playoffs if we make it.

      • That’s why talent matters. But still it’s one loss against the NFC. 4th quarter is was 23-17 and we didn’t get it done. It wasn’t an awful loss. Give the 49ers some props because they’re a good team too. The idea that we must win every game now is not realistic.

But that’s why this loss stings so badly… it was 23-17 late into the 4th quarter, and we fell on the sword… and against their 3rd-string QB.

No, it’s not the end of the world for this season at all, but it HURTS.

We’re going to get bounced if Terron can’t come back healthy this year, ya know.

  46. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I felt some LOVE(!) on this blog when we signed Terron Armstead this past season! Some recalled that Armstead was one of my ‘man crushes’ out of Arkansas Pine Bluff, even before the Combine!

Sadly, I realized (even before we signed him) that he can’t stay healthy. That’s a problem, Houston.

  47. We have 5 games to go, 8-4 overall, 6-2 conference and 2-1 division. Enjoy it! 🙂

  48. Maybe Tua is so pissed at himself he has a chip on his shoulder against the Chargers. FinsUp!!!!!

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I’m going to be very disappointed in the Mets if they don’t re-sign Nimmo. Not doing that will really hurt this team. He’s so good in so many ways. Great defender, great leadoff hitter, works pitchers every AB. He runs the bases so well, his only weakness is he doesn’t steal bases. He’s a great team player, homegrown talent. Who cares what other teams are offering, offer more!

Mike E, I finished the King Of Ashes yesterday and started Queen of Storms. I am liking the series very much. It took me a while (about 1/3 the book) to get into it. His writing style is different in the new books (not surprising, he would grow / develop of 40 years LOL ) He is not as bad as Ambercrombe, but his use of vulgarity was the biggest difference between his old style and his current books.

I am enjoying it. Thanks for bringing the books to the fest for me to borrow. I will text you to get your address so I can ship them back to you. (Hard Covers are not giveaways @ $29.95!!)

Gesicki thought it was a catch too

I guess the old cliche applies though – you really can’t count on the refs

In this case the overturned catch wasn’t the worst call of the day
But it had a huge impact

if that catch isn’t overturned I think we drive the field and score and take the lead with time running out

The officiating was very disappointing – but I just want to move on at this point. We know we didn’t okay good enough to win and we have big games in front of us

Jahn and I decided we’re not going to anymore games cause we lose when we’re there. Or is it the all white uniforms? They looked like the stars war storm troopers.

So rockslide on Coastal highway, had to reroute inland … from Carmel .. kinda sucked but at least we weren’t in it … staying Cambria tonight , explore a hit on way into LA

Fisher will fill a hole at very least.. any more than that will be a bonus

Judge spurns SF and signs same deal w/Yankees, 9YR/$360M. SF has to be hurting right now

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It makes sense though. His name and brand are worth more in a Yankee uniform than any where else. I don’t think SF is surprised. They took their swing at him but it was always a long shot

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

His stats will be higher in NY too, it’s no surprise the top 2 AL HR hitters for a season are/were Yankees, with that short RF porch

  72. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Does anyone think that Judge will still be playing ball at 40? Will he still be worth over 10 mil per season? These contracts baffle me.

It’s wrong to wish ill on any pro-athlete with a limited career and earning power (at least in terms of on-field time), but this announcement hasn’t caused me to break down in tears, and I suspect Tua is similarly heartened.

I mentioned the pick play live when it happened

You could see it in real time it was so obvious

  79. We’re going to see more and more of these long term contracts in MLB and I think it’s going to haunt teams down the road.

  80. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tagovailoa, the third-year Dolphins quarterback, has 138,390 fan votes, the most of any player in the NFL.

In addition to Tagovailoa, the Top 5 players in fan voting are Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson (137,826), Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (133,607), Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (132,100) and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (131,378)

  81. MM said it’s possible Armstead plays this week.

  82. Can’t find the article but I read earlier that MM said the signing of Eric Fisher was the chance to add a vet for depth who has a lot of big game experience and the team expects to play beyond the regular season.

  83. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I cannot believe that today was the first day I heard of the Eric Fisher signing. SMH @ myself for not knowing that and I don’t know that anybody even posted it here when it happened.

GREAT signing what with our injuries on the O-Line. Hopefully, we can make him great again with our outside ZBS. Dude has always been a very good run-blocker, and perhaps his pass-pro will benefit from our system.

  84. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I just want to say… LOL… FUCK the media! That Tua is the #1 vote-getter for the Pro Bowl is a CLEAR referendum on their nefarious BS!

    GO TUA!!!
    HELL YEAH!!!

  85. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Is anybody out there writing or saying that Lovie Smith figured out how to beat the McDaniel offense and Shanahan played that to perfection?

  86. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I do think Tua wanted to beat McDaniel’s old coach so much (to pay Mike back for all the good vibes) that he was nervous and pressing.

I do think McDaniel was also nervous and abandoned the run too quickly, perhaps seduced by the early Sherfield TD, to go all in on the pass game and ignore the run.

  87. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Concerning the deep drop by the ILBs that disrupted the favored middle passing game of Miami, especially Waddle,
why did McDaniel not just go with the solution he employed against the Browns,
who have a similar Defense and pass rush stars?

  88. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Is it possible in some remote corner of human psychology that McDaniel would not want to beat the man who saved his life from alcoholism, trained him how to coach, and prepped him and displayed him so McDaniel could get his dream job worth millions of dollars?
    just once, one payback game,
    or at least,
did McD at least not have the killer instinct
or was McD paralyzed with hero worship / gratitude
    or
    (Wild Theory Warning here)

It’s just one game; if Mike could sacrifice that one NFC game and still make the playoffs so Shanahan could also make the playoffs, just out of gratitude …

then, if they meet in the Super Bowl … all debts would’ve been paid off,
    and
McDaniel would have saved his run game playbook as a secret weapon,
and he’d feel good about beating his mentor for a much bigger prize.

  89. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Or more plausibly,
Was McDaniel keeping some things under wraps to use in later AFC-vital games?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think the gameplan was flawed, I think the it was the execution of the gameplan that was flawed.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I certainly agree that Tua missed some open guys,
but I do not know how a game plan can win with only 8 rushes.

  90. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I still think our losses at DB are underrated.
not just Byron Jones who is never more than a step away from his man,
but also Brandon Jones and his sacks and run support,
AND Nik Needham and his nickle coverage and run support,
and even Trill Williams, a 6’1 206 Corner
who could’ve helped spell X without the learning curve of Kohou
or the iffy talent of Bethel and Crossen,
who are really just career ST guys.

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – Wilson was hardly involved which lead me to think maybe he wasn’t feeling right, and Mostert was coming off an injury too, so maybe he just dialed the run game back.

  93. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Naples, the game plan was flawed because of poor execution, imo.

After the first completion, the next 7 pass plays were poorly executed. If Tua completed half (should have been 90% since most were easy), the game and thus game plan might have been radically different.

As a result of poor early execution, panic and playing from behind colored the rest of the game. Imo, of course.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

This was a major reason I never cared/liked Fiedler. He always started out the game putting the Dolphins behind the 8 ball.

they were still calling it “self-abuse.”
And the doctor (as were all doctors back then)
    was a man,
not some hot young lady doctor (as we guys would all imagine),

which gave the whole thing a bit of a different twist.

  96. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Mike E and Krishna

I’m not letting the rookie HC off the hook that easy for the SF loss.

His playbook’ll get figured out before too long,
    if it hasn’t been already,
and he’ll need to show he can win a different way
than just flinging masses of passes between the hashes.

Saleh knows him as well as Shanahan.
Bellicheat knows how to beat every offense ever invented.
and McDermott has those same thugs on D that SF beat us up with.

and watch out for Khalil Mack and that Packer D as well,
or we could go 0-6 to spoil the season.
