2023 Combine Done, Free Agency and Draft approach

The Dolphins will head into the 2023 NFL Draft short on picks, holding only a handful (5) of picks. We’re also over the cap at this very moment, but that will be remedied as we enter the free agency period and draft. Contracts will be restructured to open up cap room to acquire some new players and definitely to re-sign some of our players that were on the 2022 roster. In regards to the players that were here in ’22 that we should re-sign, I’ll list them in order of priority.

  1. LB Elandon Roberts
  2. CB Nik Needham
  3. RB Raheem Mostert
  4. OT Brandon Shell

OT Austin Jackson has not panned out, but he has one more season to prove he’s an NFL starting OT. Nothing he has done in his career leads me to believe that he should be penciled in at any position along our offensive line. He did play 17 games (started 16) at LG in 2021, but played in only 2 games last season. Despite playing an entire season in ’21, he was underwhelming at best. Injuries cut short his season last year, and although we have a 5th year option for Jackson, at this time I don’t see us using it. Brandon Shell, on the other hand, was a great backup who played in 13 games last season starting 11. His play, mostly at RT was impressive. I think we need to have a reliable option to backup either side, and right now, Shell would be choice over Austin Jackson. It’s also possible that talented OG Robert Hunt makes the move to RT, but I love his play inside, and it’s easier and less expensive to find a reliable OG than it is to find an offensive tackle.

As most of you know, I’m a huge fan of Nik Needham. Provided he’ll be ready to start the 2023 season, I’d re-sign the guy who always stepped up to play wherever and whenever he was asked. A true game, I want that guy on our team. Since we have ZERO running backs on our roster, Raheem Mostert in my opinion is one guy we want back. If we can get 2 guys back, I’d take Jeff Wilson too, but Mostert would be my first choice. That guy is electric, and just explodes through the hole or around the corner. Wilson is more of an inside runner than Mostert and he has some wiggle too, and seems more like a guy who can sustain a few more carries. That being said, neither player has had more than 200 carries in a season, so both players in my opinion are RB by committee guys, so I’d prefer to draft a RB, and wouldn’t mind if it were in the early rounds.

Back to CB, we have Xavien Howard, Kader Kohou, and Trill Williams. Seems clear as day that Byron Jones will not be playing for us and will be a post June 1st cut where he then either retires, or resumes his theatrics elsewhere. TE is another void for us with incumbent Durham Smythe the only reliable TE on the roster. TE Cethan Carter is still on the roster, as is Hunter Long and Tanner Conner. My feeling is we need to address TE either in free agency or the draft, and how we proceed with free agency will dictate what we do in the draft. Whatever doesn’t get filled in Free Agency will then become a priority for the draft. Teams generally don’t like to leave themselves in a position where they have to address any particular position in the draft, and remember, there is free agency that happens after the draft, and there are always players made available after teams fill their roster with freshly drafted players and let some veteran players go.

CB, TE, RB, OL seem to be our top priorities. Yes, I know many of you want more LB’s, specifically inside LB’s, but I’ve addressed this last article. Re-sign Elandon Roberts and we’re good to go. Our defense will be a better unit in the capable hands of Vic Fangio, we don’t need to spend a 2nd RD pick on a LB. Once again, not to be monotonous or redundant, but we can’t say for sure what our draft needs are until we fill the roster in free agency. Nevertheless, let’s look at some prospects at the aforementioned positions that could help us.

Since we don’t pick until #51 in the 2nd RD, these are the players that might be available when we pick

CB Deonte Banks 6’0 197 – Maryland

CB Kelee Ringo 6’2 207 – Georgia

CB Emmanuel Forbes 6’1 166 – Mississippi State

__________________________________________

TE Darnell Washington 6’7 264 – Georgia

TE Tucker Kraft 6’5 254 – South Dakota State

TE Luke Schoonmaker 6’5 251 – Michigan

__________________________________________

RB Jahmyr Gibbs 5’9 199 – Alabama

RB Israel Abanikanda 5’11 216 – Pittsburgh

RB Eric Gray – 5’9 1/2 207 – Oklahoma

I expect to hear a lot of I like this guy or that guy, or that guy won’t be available when we pick etc. All good in the hood, let it fly. These players are not set in stone, just an idea who might help our team and again, might be available when we choose. Obviously I did not pick the top prospects at any spot because they won’t be there, and some of the guys I chose may not end getting to 51 or beyond either. I didn’t watch a lot of the combine, and it was just one particular thing that impressed me. TE Darnell Washington, who is one of the taller TE’s, got down and moved the blocked sled like it was on wheels. Just one drill, but it shows he can bend, and he has the strength and technique to block effectively in the NFL. Most of the other guys who followed were not nearly as accomplished as Washington. Considering the fact that we need a willing (and effective) blocker for our TE, I’d love to snare Washington. He may not be the most accomplished receiver of the group, but if our TE can help our run game, I think his size alone will help him be an effective receiver.

Just in case you guys were unaware, RB Israel Abanikanda attended my High School in Brooklyn NY. Abraham Lincoln High School. Besides that, what a great name, maybe he can do commercials like our former MLB of the “No Name Defense” Nick Buoniconti did. “Hi, I’m Israel Abinakanda” “Who????” I think we’re going to need a CB early on, but that may change after free agency. I’d be happy with any of those 3 guys, but who knows, maybe this is the year where Iggy gets his career on track. He’s in his walk year, considering his 5th year option would be a lofty $11.5M, quite doubtful for sure. He’s a potential roster cut as is, but he’s be relatively cheap at just over $3M. Chris Grier and our scouts have a ton of work to do, our team is on the cusp of truly being a contender. A lot of that rests on the health of our QB1. Tua Tagovailoa. We absolutely need to have him for the entire season and the playoffs. Regardless, we need Grier to fill the rest of the roster, including finding a legitimate backup QB in case what we hope for doesn’t actually happen. Let’s hope Grier gets it right.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Does the league really need to collude to say that Cleveland signed a dumb contract that no team should have ever signed?

    • Mike E. says:

      ^ precisely

    • steveccnv says:

It was a given at the time he signed, it was dumb to guarantee the contract for a player with red flags

Lamar is really no different, as he’s reached the avg expectancy age for a running QB

He surely will have another couple of high output, MVP type years, but what do you do in years 3-5 when he breaks down?

      So agree no collusion necessary

  2. Phindog says:

Itā€™s good to be back. The issue I was having was with WordPress, but I finally figured it outā€¦ Well letā€™s just say I finally put in a major effort to figure it out. šŸ¤“

  3. mf13ss says:

    Good, good!

  4. CavalierKong says:

Depends on what you mean by collude. One owner was dumb enough to give that kind of money. It’s not crazy to think the owners talked amongst themselves about it.

Did they all come to an agreement to not give that much guaranteed money again? Like has been said, it probably isn’t necessary. Any owner would give that kind of money to Mahomes if KC was dumb enough to let things get to that. Maybe one or two other QBs, but not Jackson or any other player. The Browns were fools to put Watson in that category.

The issue I have with this situation is it doesn’t take a genius to see why no one wants to give Jackson oodles of guaranteed money.

Jackson is Cam Newton II. The Browns saw a guy that could be their QB for the next 10 years because he’s a good passing QB that runs, not the other way around and it was still a terrible, terrible decision. I would worry about Jackson making it 3 years.

I’ve said it before- Jackson is a dynamic runner and a very mediocre passer. He’ll win a lot of regular season games until he breaks down completely in a couple of years.

And even if Jackson stays healthy, will his ability translate to deep playoff runs? It hasn’t so far.

He hasn’t made it out of the divisional rd and he’s never scored more than 20 points in any playoff game.

    20, 3, 12, 17 – That is the Jackson-led offensive output in 3 years of playoffs.

He’s 1-3 with his only win coming when the opponent scored 13 points.

900 passing yards and 3 TDs in 4 games.

Who wants to give that guy 200 mil guaranteed?

  5. CavalierKong says:

Schefter just put out that one of the reasons teams are not showing interest in Jackson is because they feel the Ravens are just going to match and they don’t want to do the work for the Ravens.

I said yesterday, I think the reason they gave him the non-exclusive tag is because they intend to keep him and they know no one is giving him the guaranteed money he is asking for so they’ll just match.

    • steveccnv says:

They’re playing opossum with him, but by no other team talking to him it will allow Balt to sign him cheaper

Maybe that’s what the owners want

  6. Rhino says:

Lamar Jackson is not using an agent. The Ravens seem to have told him that they will let the other 31 teams be his agent by determining his value.

    • steveccnv says:

      Good way of putting it

There’s a reason it’s tough to win an SB while paying a QB big bucks

KC sort of managed to do it (Mahomes 35m 2022), but trading for a QB and paying him 50m is even harder, Stafford doesn’t kick in a big cap hit until this year

    • CavalierKong says:

He did the same thing going into the draft. I can’t remember if that was part of the reason he fell in the draft, but you have to think it’s made this process harder and has hurt his career earnings.

An agent would probably have tried to convince him he isn’t getting 200 mil guaranteed and would better serve him in getting max value.

  7. CavalierKong says:

This Michael Irving stuff really appears to be complete BS. I hope the person who made the allegation suffers some real world consequence.

    • CavalierKong says:

The little bit of the video his attorneys have been allowed to see show nothing. There are two witnesses in the lobby who have come forward and said nothing was untoward.

I’ve never been an Irving fan, he sounds like he has marbles in his mouth when he talks, but the dude lost out on a big Super Bowl gig because of a 2 minute interaction in the middle of a hotel that by witness accounts and video was cursory and friendly.

Solely based on a ‘she said’ accusation that has, to this point, not been backed up by anything, and to the contrary has been controverted by evidence.

    • Rockphin says:

      ?? What “Michael Irving” stuff?

      • Rockphin says:

nevermind. I just googled “what Michael Irving stuff” Literally and found the story.

100M lawsuit for being banned from their hotels seems a bit over the top!

That said, the woman was probably trying for a cash grab against a celebrity.

      • CavalierKong says:

He was also suspended from his role in covering the Super Bowl like a week before the game. That is why it’s a big deal. I doubt he cares about being banned from the hotel too much, lol.

        https://apnews.com/article/michael-irvin-nfl-defamation-lawsuit-marriott-25997fc06f18c29db77199dc0c2752dc

Witnesses say nothing happened, there is video, yet they threw him out of his hotel and he was suspended from his job during the biggest week of the NFL.

Unless there is a lot more to the story that comes out, I hope he gets every penny and Jane Doe has real consequences.

    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2023-nfl-free-agency-matchmaker-jimmy-garoppolo-to-dolphins-marcus-mariota-to-eagles-among-16-qb-scenarios/

    Jimmy Garoppolo to the Dolphins

If Miami isn’t going to pursue starting competition for Tua Tagovailoa, it should at least be in the market for premium insurance. And there’s none greater than Garoppolo, who was at his best replacing the injured Trey Lance in San Francisco. Jimmy G has his own medical history, of course, but like Tua, he fits old friend Mike McDaniel’s quick-strike 49ers-esque offense.
    —————–

Great idea!! As long as Jimmy G is ok as a backup and will take somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 mil it makes perfect sense.

Of course, He’ll probably get offered a starter position at anywhere from 20-30 mil, but why let things like that make a difference? Brilliant!! LOL

    • CavalierKong says:

      LOL, later in the article:

      Taylor Heinicke to the Raiders
Garoppolo is the more obvious fit thanks to his history with Josh McDaniels, but we’ve got him elsewhere (above), and Heinicke is arguably just as capable as a placeholder/competition for a potential early-round pick. His feisty approach might help alleviate Derek Carr’s absence, and Vegas’ passing game coordinator, Scott Turner, worked with him in both Minnesota and Washington.
      —————-

So Jimmy G is going to take a backup position over starting for the Raiders?! People get paid for this drivel.

  10. Ken says:

My favorite Michael Irvin story from his 1996 birthday party:

On the night of March 4, police officers from the Dallas suburb of Irving didnā€™t arrest Irvin when they found him in a hotel room celebrating his thirtieth birthday with his buddy Alfredo Roberts (a former Cowboys lineman) and two topless dancers, Angela Beck and Jasmine Nabwangu. Party favors included 10.3 grams of cocaine and more than an ounce of marijuana, assorted drug paraphernalia, and sex toys. Although a glass cigar holder containing cocaine residue was found in a small bag belonging to Irvin, the officers arrested only Beck, a doe-eyed brunette who described herself as a self-employed model. According to later testimony, Beck took the rap and claimed that all the drugs were hers because Irvin had pulled her aside while police officers were still outside the room and promised he would treat her like a ā€œprincess.ā€ Then Irvin greeted the officers and asked one of them, ā€œDo you know who I am?ā€ ā€œI know who you are,ā€ the officer replied.

    • Ken says:

He literally had a bag of dicks ā€¦err dildos with him

    • CavalierKong says:

LOL ‘bag of dicks’ never gets old

Probably another reason he is fighting this allegation so hard (although I’d say the damage to his career is enough by itself).

He was a known party guy and all around f^ck up when he played for the Cowboys. He’s repaired that image over the last two decades, and as far as I’m aware, he hasn’t been in trouble since the early 2000s.

  11. steveccnv says:

Ravens are doing it right, they aren’t throwing 50m out guaranteed per year

Agree with you, Rock about DL….

    ….injuries and scheme, too, imo

  18. Krishna says:

We haven’t had a good DL in years…

  19. One week to go for FA. Should be really interesting for us Dolfans as we have roster voids.

    • mf13ss says:

I continue to hear that Jordan Poyer to us Phins is a real possibility, relegating/designating Brandon Jones as our box-Safety (that’s what he does best), and taking over the Eric Rowe role.

Somebody here proposed it about a month ago, and it’s picked up traction since. I’d rather us throw resources toward signing Tremaine Edmunds, but that’s just me.

We shall see in about a week…

  20. Krishna says:

I think our D overall needs better coaching and scheme….we need to keep our best and not sell the farm. I think we have some nice talent on D, including DL.

    Go Vic!

  21. M13, I think Holland has shown he can play any role as a safety. He should thrive in Fangio’s defense. I agree Jones is best as a box safety, he’s aggressive attacking the ball carrier blitzing or playing the run. The only way I see Poyer fitting in is if Fangio wants to play a lot with 5 and 6 DBs.

I proposed signing Poyer very well before Poyer talking about playing in Florida and with his friend Tua.

3 things in the video it points out that I was critical about all season….limiting explosive explains, is one. It drove me crazy when I heard all last season, EXCEPT for that 99 yard run we were great on D…lmao.

Make 3rd and long happen, but fucking WIN it on D. Again, we lost that battle a lot! So frustrating….lol…and in my mind, not the makings of a good D.

Finally, disguise the D with movement or whatever….I had flashbacks of Olivadatti’s D….you always knew what the D was doing last year….ugh!

If we can excel in the above, we can be top 10, imo. Just do it! Lol…

  25. ukfinfan says:

    There’s a bunch of money!

  26. Krishna says:

    Wow…nice

  27. Rockphin says:

According to Spotrac, Miami entered the day $14.24 million over their $225.71 million cap, so they should be under now. That number does still include Jonesā€™ cap hit, as his release has not been made official yet.

Chubb was acquired, along with a 2025 fifth-round pick, last season at the trade deadline for a 2023 first-round selection, a 2024 fourth-round pick and running back Chase Edmonds. Miami then immediately gave the linebacker a five-year, $110 million contract extension upon arrival.

Let’s hope he keeps his tank full to the end of the contract, because they just made is later years a lot more. We already owed him 26.5+ Million per season in ’24-27. Now increase those numbers to 30 fucking mill per season!!!!!

Grief is NOT a good GM.

  28. bailbondmike says:

Rock, I agree, but Grier put himself in a position where he had to do what he had to do. Let’s hope over the next 2 years the cap really goes up like they predicted it would.

With the moves they have done, we should be close to around 16 under the cap. An extension on Wilkins could free up even more.

  29. Rockphin says:

THere are still assholes saying that Brady to Miami is still in play. SMH now so former Pat player who is now a talking head is putting it out there that it definitely is still possible….He sites Rich Eisen and Colin Cowherd as “sources” FUCK ASSHOLES JUST STOP IT! YOU LOOK LIKE COMPLETE IDIOTS AND ASSHOLES!

  30. bailbondmike says:

Make that around 15 mil with BJones and Cathan Carter releases.

The math never seems to work out. lol

They said we entered the day at 14.24 over (per spotrac). They said we cleared 14.65 with the Chubb deal. So we should be around 400K under the cap but spotrac shows us at around 600K over.

  31. CavalierKong says:

I could be wrong (it should just be a given all my comments start that way, lol), but doesn’t the money for Jones hit our books as soon as we officially release him? Are teams allowed to designate a couple of players as post june 1st releases and get that relief right away?

If so, then the Chubb move creates enough space for us to start signing guys right away when the FA period hits next week. We still probably need at least one or two more restructures to give us enough space to fill out the roster.

    • Rockphin says:

No, post June 1 just do not hit the cap until June 1. (They action of cutting them happens March 15th, but the relief doesn’t kick in until after the 1st.

      • CavalierKong says:

Gotcha. I know you can only designate a couple of players that way. I thought the whole idea of designating was to get that relief early and to let those players hit the market early.

If the team doesn’t get cap relief, I assume the benefit to the team must be that they get that roster spot, so they can fill it early in the FA period.

      • CavalierKong says:

Or maybe I’ve read the whole ‘designation’ thing wrong. Maybe a team can only cut a couple of players post june 1st for cap relief? I’ve been assuming you can cut as many players as you want to post june 1st, but you could ‘designate’ a couple of players prior to that. I clearly need to read up on this, lol.

  32. CavalierKong says:

OK, that didn’t take me long, lol. So, as you said, Rock, the cap savings is always after June 1st. And ‘early designation’ does just mean a team can designate up to 2 players as post june 1st even though they cut them early, but teams aren’t limited other than in the early designation.

  33. steveccnv says:

The Chubb restructure seems odd, but I’m not going to worry about what his cap hit is in future years

It’s kind of difficult to take credit for something that hasn’t even occurred, LOL. What’s more, I was endorsing Jordan Poyer to us Phins BEFORE we fired Boyer. Now that Vic Fangio is our DC, I’ve changed my tune to signing Tremaine Edmunds (or Wagner or Kendricks) over Poyer.

    —————
No disrespect taken, man. Again, I was endorsing Poyer BEFORE we fired Boyer. Fangio as our new DC changed my mind.

Most everybody didn’t want Poyer to come in and replace the younger and upcoming Brandon Jones.

Bottom line was that Boyer (as learned from the Patsies*) was to employ a box-Safety (see Eric Rowe)… utilizing 3 Safeties at times.

As far as I know, Fangio doesn’t roll with 3 Safety looks. That’s why I no longer endorse Jordan Poyer to us Phins… I’d rather us get after a stud MLB/ILB.

I hope this provides some clarity on my change of heart, and that I was for Poyer coming here before most anyone.

  43. bailbondmike says:

I would be for signing Poyer over the more expensive Edmonds. Brandon Jones is coming off ACL surgery. This will give us 2 very good cover safeties on the back end with Brandon Jones as an SS. It will allow Fangio to do a lot of things with that trio.

Bring back Elandon Roberts and Duke Riley. Address CB in draft. Our starting D will be looking good!

  44. I’m not worried about the cap as there are ways to manipulate it. You see it every year. We have a quality core of players and I expect us to be a good team this year.

    • mf13ss says:

The cap eventually catches up with ya, man… manipulated or not. It’s either ‘WIN NOW’, or we’ve got to be careful with our spending.

      • We know we’re trying to win now. That’s why I’m not worried about it. We’ve had enough years of rebuilding and changing coaches and being mediocre. Being in the playoff mix and competing for a championship is cool with me.

      • mf13ss says:

Then if we can spread the $$$ out to WIN NOW, I’d love to bring Tremaine Edmunds aboard.

  45. mf13ss says:

I sense we are trying to win it all NOW… same essential strategy the Rams used to win their last Super Bowl. As we restructure deals to free up more money for TODAY, it kicks the can into oblivion tomorrow (again, see the Rams).

We’ve got Tua on his rookie contract (that’s a HUGE factor) and we’re aiming to make noise NOW. If we want to re-sign/extend Christian Wilkins, Zach Seiler, Tua, and maybe a few other key players, we’re already in trouble.

IF we add another prized FA target (see Tremaine Edmunds), I’d say the ‘WIN NOW’ theory is in full effect. If the ‘WIN NOW’ theory doesn’t hold up, we’d better be very careful with our future spending, starting today.

  46. Krishna, I was doing a deep dive into Fangio’s defense reading about the coverages he uses, how he employs them and then reading up on what those coverages are. I thought the videos I posted added some good commentary on it. Glad you enjoyed.

Isnā€™t that what Cedric Wilson is?
    ———————
He is an overpaid maybe average at best returner and didn’t get open much. Much lesser paid WR’s (than his 8 mil this season) gave us much more production.

We paid 5.7 mil last year for 12 rec on 18 targets for 136 yards with 0 scores and 13 punt returns for 97 yards. Now we are going to pay 8 mil this season with 7 mil guaranteed.

Barrios didn’t add much more than Wilson in the receiving department but averaged 11.5 yards on punt returns. Also, had 9 carries for 91 yards and 2 TD’s. He can be used multiple ways.

All that said, we couldn’t afford him anyway and we are stuck with Wilson’s contract this year unless he is restructured.

My hope is he makes a huge leap in year 2 in this system.

    • If we can’t trade Wilson and I’m not sure we can, we need him to produce. But I also see a restructure coming.

      • bailbondmike says:

I would be happy with either or both.

      • It would be nice to see Ezukanma take the next step in year 2. I think our playbook was too much for him from what he did in college. He needs the thinking to slow down so he can play fast.

The same with Tindall at LB but he now has a new coach and system that I think will be easier for him. Fangio runs very common formations and concepts. His base is also 3-4 and that’s what Georgia runs so it won’t be a total change for him.

SMH, the Niners got 7 comp picks, including 3 in the 3rd rd. I’m pretty sure two of those 3rd rd picks were for minority hires from their team.

    • Two of those 3rds SF is getting is about the minority coaches getting HC jobs with Saleh and McDaniel.

I understand the goodwill sentiment but it’s not really ethically fair when it comes to roster building for all 32 teams. Compensatory picks were supposed to be about subsidizing a team that lost good players to FA and they didn’t sign same quality replacements. Now it’s about social issues.

      • son of a son of a shula says:

        Itā€™s an unbalance.

If you want to give rewards which is the incentive anyway let a team increase its practice squad instead of manipulating the draft. Thatā€™s fuzzy math when you tell me there are more than 32 picks in a round. Or let me dress an extra man next season for 2, 4, 6, maybe all the games. To me those are nice benefits for a team.

      • Son, it’s another form of affirmative action. This is where politics leaked into the NFL. Too many people are acting like 2023 USA is in the 1960’s again. It needs to stop. It’s nothing like that.

      That should be the criteria.

But win or lose , their current 29-3 record gets them to the DANCE!!

I also have to give a shout out to the College of Charleston Cougars who reeled off 10 wins in a row to close the season and came away with the Colonial Conference Championship and finished the season at 31-3.

I don’t know the slightest where they will be seeded but they are a good shooting team and will give anyone a run for their money.

  60. Mike E. says:

Rocko – Armstead was still the best LT we’ve had here in a looooong time. I know it sucks that he doesn’t play a whole season. David Bakhtiari doesn’t usually a full season either, but he’s still regarded as great. I’d rather have great play for 13 or 14 games than shit for 17.

    • Rockphin says:

My point was heā€™s always injured why would you push money down the road to when heā€™s not going to play.

  61. Mike E. says:

    The restructuring continues . . .

  62. Mike E. says:

Rock – Your Grier hate is in full bloom. Injuries are part of the game. You know if Tua stayed healthy the entire season, we were probably the #2 or #3 seed. I suppose you could say we never should have drafted Tua, and that’s fair. The Niners spent a 3rd RD pick on Frank Gore back in 2005, and that was after coming off of TWO ACL tears. Gore went on to play 15 years at a position where injuries happen all the time. I know everyone and their mother think that Tua is done, or that he will be injured every season, if he even gets past next season. Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re wrong. Maybe Tua plays another 10-15 years and never has concussion issues or any other injuries, and plays like he did most of last season for the rest of his career and cements his place as one of the great Miami Dolphins QB’s.

  63. CavalierKong says:

    LOL

So this clears like 44 mil and gives us something like 30 mil in space, right? I just saw one of the brilliant talking heads ask “Is Miami getting ready for a big move?” and later in the article “What is to make of the Dolphins urge to free up significant amounts of salary cap space?”, then he mentions Brady and Jackson.

It never ceases to amaze me how little these guys know. We need the space to fill out our roster, not to effing sign Brady or Jackson!

    • Mike E. says:

Many of these rumors or suggestions are by our own beat guys, so I can’t blame the national crowd. It’s been suggested that it’s incompetence for us not to explore acquiring Lamar Jackson. Why is it only us though? Tua gets completely discounted, as if they know he’s not playing another NFL game, despite the fact that our GM and HC have come out and declared Tua is the starter next season. It’s the weirdest shit ever! My friends who are Jets fans, Giants fans, Steelers fans all KNOW that Tua will never play again. How does this happen?

      • CavalierKong says:

It’s really bizarre. In the past couple of years we hemmed and hawed about Tua being our starter, so at least there was purchase for rumor to take hold, but this time our FO came out and said unequivocally he’s our starter in 2023. What do we need to do to get this shyte to stop? lol

  64. CavalierKong says:

    Breaking:
Dolphins sign Tom Brady and Lamar Jackson. Both players intend to play both ways, along with most of the team, and the Dolphins will enter the season dressing only 35 players.

  65. CavalierKong says:

So now we have plenty of space to fil out our roster, plus we have an additional 13.6 mil june 2nd when Jones cap savings kicks in.

That Jones money will let us pick up a guy or two after teams start trimming rosters down to 53, pick up injury replacements in-season if necessary, or we can roll it over to next season which washes out Jones’ 10 mil cap hit next year.

  68. steveccnv says:

How do you use Byron’s June 1st cap money now?

    By restructuring contracts

Chubb, Armstead, and Hill have been restructured, so the additional money, that goes against the 2024 cap, from these restructures, is about a wash (just an assumption) with Byron’s 13m cap savings in June, which can be carried over to next year, but we all know, that in June we’ll sign some 1 year contracts and use that money, but whatever the point is they’re kicking the can down the road and have factored in Byron’s cap savings now

  69. Randy says:

    Steve,
I donā€™t think Cook will demand a lot of money. Folks here are suggesting they probably wonā€™t get more than like a 5th round pick for him. I donā€™t see him as an optionā€¦just trying to give M13 some false hope. Lol

  70. steveccnv says:

What I heard in January was we can restructure some contracts to get about 45m in cap relief

Looks like we’ve done that already not counting Byron

I bet there’s still some restructuring in the works, we need another 10 players or so for 53, or 8 for top 51, let’s assume those 8 count about 8m against the cap, and any FA signed for more than 8m would just subtract from the 30m or so we’re currently under the cap

The rookies will most likely not count any more against the cap, with the 8m assumption above, since we don’t have a 1st

Checking Over the Cap we sit at 28.5m under currently…

    • CavalierKong says:

We could get another 15 mil restructuring Baker and Ogbah if necessary.

    • steveccnv says:

I see 4 or 5 guys from our current roster, that are not likely to make the 53, those salaries are a wash with the rookies we’ll draft, so 10 FA still to be signed, including let’s say 3 1 year contracts after June 1st, that, so 7 of our own or not

We could still cut/trade guys like Eich or Jackson upping the number of FAs

7 FAs could avg 4m 2023 cap hits, including a relatively high priced guy, we have options in FA

  71. ukfinfan says:

  72. Mike E. says:

While restructuring creates cap relief now, there does come a time where you have to pay the piper. At that point, you have let players go so we better start building a young foundation when that time comes. You can’t keep picking up big contracts in Free Agency, that’s just not sustainable.

  73. Mike E. says:

Steve – It’s kind of like obtaining more credit cards with either no interest or low interest rates, and then putting dept from one card to the next. It works for a while, but eventually, those bills come due and have to be paid.

  74. steveccnv says:

I thought the jets had money to spend, 1.5m over, are they really going to sign/trade for Rodgers, then give him a 10m cap hit this year, while it’s 60m the next 3?

  75. steveccnv says:

    28, 26, 25, 20, 18, 17 and 14 rounded down, those are our top 7 cap hits next year counting over 150m against 2024

  76. steveccnv says:

In case you forgot when it starts

I never had a ‘man-crush’ on Cook, but he would be nice. However — and like Steve stated above — I don’t think we’ll ever try to bring in an overpriced RB. The Shanahan system produces 1,000-yard backs out of UDFAs.

ā€” The usual suspects from our ā€™22 season (ie: Elandon Roberts, Nik Needham, etc)

ā€” QB Case Keenum (knows our Offense, being he was drafted into it under Gary Kubiak, a consummate Shanahan disciple, will come relatively cheap)

ā€” TE Hayden Hurst (blocking TE who can catch)

ā€” CB Patrick Peterson (heā€™s still got it, after all these years)

ā€” ILB/MLB Tremaine Edmunds (for obvious reasons, though probably a pipedream at this point due to money. Bobby Wagner or Eric Kendricks would be welcome, too)
