The Dolphins will head into the 2023 NFL Draft short on picks, holding only a handful (5) of picks. We’re also over the cap at this very moment, but that will be remedied as we enter the free agency period and draft. Contracts will be restructured to open up cap room to acquire some new players and definitely to re-sign some of our players that were on the 2022 roster. In regards to the players that were here in ’22 that we should re-sign, I’ll list them in order of priority.
- LB Elandon Roberts
- CB Nik Needham
- RB Raheem Mostert
- OT Brandon Shell
OT Austin Jackson has not panned out, but he has one more season to prove he’s an NFL starting OT. Nothing he has done in his career leads me to believe that he should be penciled in at any position along our offensive line. He did play 17 games (started 16) at LG in 2021, but played in only 2 games last season. Despite playing an entire season in ’21, he was underwhelming at best. Injuries cut short his season last year, and although we have a 5th year option for Jackson, at this time I don’t see us using it. Brandon Shell, on the other hand, was a great backup who played in 13 games last season starting 11. His play, mostly at RT was impressive. I think we need to have a reliable option to backup either side, and right now, Shell would be choice over Austin Jackson. It’s also possible that talented OG Robert Hunt makes the move to RT, but I love his play inside, and it’s easier and less expensive to find a reliable OG than it is to find an offensive tackle.
As most of you know, I’m a huge fan of Nik Needham. Provided he’ll be ready to start the 2023 season, I’d re-sign the guy who always stepped up to play wherever and whenever he was asked. A true game, I want that guy on our team. Since we have ZERO running backs on our roster, Raheem Mostert in my opinion is one guy we want back. If we can get 2 guys back, I’d take Jeff Wilson too, but Mostert would be my first choice. That guy is electric, and just explodes through the hole or around the corner. Wilson is more of an inside runner than Mostert and he has some wiggle too, and seems more like a guy who can sustain a few more carries. That being said, neither player has had more than 200 carries in a season, so both players in my opinion are RB by committee guys, so I’d prefer to draft a RB, and wouldn’t mind if it were in the early rounds.
Back to CB, we have Xavien Howard, Kader Kohou, and Trill Williams. Seems clear as day that Byron Jones will not be playing for us and will be a post June 1st cut where he then either retires, or resumes his theatrics elsewhere. TE is another void for us with incumbent Durham Smythe the only reliable TE on the roster. TE Cethan Carter is still on the roster, as is Hunter Long and Tanner Conner. My feeling is we need to address TE either in free agency or the draft, and how we proceed with free agency will dictate what we do in the draft. Whatever doesn’t get filled in Free Agency will then become a priority for the draft. Teams generally don’t like to leave themselves in a position where they have to address any particular position in the draft, and remember, there is free agency that happens after the draft, and there are always players made available after teams fill their roster with freshly drafted players and let some veteran players go.
CB, TE, RB, OL seem to be our top priorities. Yes, I know many of you want more LB’s, specifically inside LB’s, but I’ve addressed this last article. Re-sign Elandon Roberts and we’re good to go. Our defense will be a better unit in the capable hands of Vic Fangio, we don’t need to spend a 2nd RD pick on a LB. Once again, not to be monotonous or redundant, but we can’t say for sure what our draft needs are until we fill the roster in free agency. Nevertheless, let’s look at some prospects at the aforementioned positions that could help us.

I expect to hear a lot of I like this guy or that guy, or that guy won’t be available when we pick etc. All good in the hood, let it fly. These players are not set in stone, just an idea who might help our team and again, might be available when we choose. Obviously I did not pick the top prospects at any spot because they won’t be there, and some of the guys I chose may not end getting to 51 or beyond either. I didn’t watch a lot of the combine, and it was just one particular thing that impressed me. TE Darnell Washington, who is one of the taller TE’s, got down and moved the blocked sled like it was on wheels. Just one drill, but it shows he can bend, and he has the strength and technique to block effectively in the NFL. Most of the other guys who followed were not nearly as accomplished as Washington. Considering the fact that we need a willing (and effective) blocker for our TE, I’d love to snare Washington. He may not be the most accomplished receiver of the group, but if our TE can help our run game, I think his size alone will help him be an effective receiver.
Just in case you guys were unaware, RB Israel Abanikanda attended my High School in Brooklyn NY. Abraham Lincoln High School. Besides that, what a great name, maybe he can do commercials like our former MLB of the “No Name Defense” Nick Buoniconti did. “Hi, I’m Israel Abinakanda” “Who????” I think we’re going to need a CB early on, but that may change after free agency. I’d be happy with any of those 3 guys, but who knows, maybe this is the year where Iggy gets his career on track. He’s in his walk year, considering his 5th year option would be a lofty $11.5M, quite doubtful for sure. He’s a potential roster cut as is, but he’s be relatively cheap at just over $3M. Chris Grier and our scouts have a ton of work to do, our team is on the cusp of truly being a contender. A lot of that rests on the health of our QB1. Tua Tagovailoa. We absolutely need to have him for the entire season and the playoffs. Regardless, we need Grier to fill the rest of the roster, including finding a legitimate backup QB in case what we hope for doesn’t actually happen. Let’s hope Grier gets it right.

Depends on what you mean by collude. One owner was dumb enough to give that kind of money. It’s not crazy to think the owners talked amongst themselves about it.
Did they all come to an agreement to not give that much guaranteed money again? Like has been said, it probably isn’t necessary. Any owner would give that kind of money to Mahomes if KC was dumb enough to let things get to that. Maybe one or two other QBs, but not Jackson or any other player. The Browns were fools to put Watson in that category.
The issue I have with this situation is it doesn’t take a genius to see why no one wants to give Jackson oodles of guaranteed money.
Jackson is Cam Newton II. The Browns saw a guy that could be their QB for the next 10 years because he’s a good passing QB that runs, not the other way around and it was still a terrible, terrible decision. I would worry about Jackson making it 3 years.
I’ve said it before- Jackson is a dynamic runner and a very mediocre passer. He’ll win a lot of regular season games until he breaks down completely in a couple of years.
And even if Jackson stays healthy, will his ability translate to deep playoff runs? It hasn’t so far.
He hasn’t made it out of the divisional rd and he’s never scored more than 20 points in any playoff game.
20, 3, 12, 17 – That is the Jackson-led offensive output in 3 years of playoffs.
He’s 1-3 with his only win coming when the opponent scored 13 points.

M13, I think Holland has shown he can play any role as a safety. He should thrive in Fangio’s defense. I agree Jones is best as a box safety, he’s aggressive attacking the ball carrier blitzing or playing the run. The only way I see Poyer fitting in is if Fangio wants to play a lot with 5 and 6 DBs.
Fangio uses a lot of deep coverage. He wants to force opponents to go on long drives expecting sacks and turnovers along the way. Doesn’t want to give up the big play.

According to Spotrac, Miami entered the day $14.24 million over their $225.71 million cap, so they should be under now. That number does still include Jonesā cap hit, as his release has not been made official yet.
Chubb was acquired, along with a 2025 fifth-round pick, last season at the trade deadline for a 2023 first-round selection, a 2024 fourth-round pick and running back Chase Edmonds. Miami then immediately gave the linebacker a five-year, $110 million contract extension upon arrival.
Let’s hope he keeps his tank full to the end of the contract, because they just made is later years a lot more. We already owed him 26.5+ Million per season in ’24-27. Now increase those numbers to 30 fucking mill per season!!!!!

Bottom line was that Boyer (as learned from the Patsies*) was to employ a box-Safety (see Eric Rowe)… utilizing 3 Safeties at times.
As far as I know, Fangio doesn’t roll with 3 Safety looks. That’s why I no longer endorse Jordan Poyer to us Phins… I’d rather us get after a stud MLB/ILB.

I’m not worried about the cap as there are ways to manipulate it. You see it every year. We have a quality core of players and I expect us to be a good team this year.

IF we add another prized FA target (see Tremaine Edmunds), I’d say the ‘WIN NOW’ theory is in full effect. If the ‘WIN NOW’ theory doesn’t hold up, we’d better be very careful with our future spending, starting today.
We’ll see what happens in FA. Like I’ve said before I’d be shocked if we sign Edmunds.

He is an overpaid maybe average at best returner and didn’t get open much. Much lesser paid WR’s (than his 8 mil this season) gave us much more production.
We paid 5.7 mil last year for 12 rec on 18 targets for 136 yards with 0 scores and 13 punt returns for 97 yards. Now we are going to pay 8 mil this season with 7 mil guaranteed.
Barrios didn’t add much more than Wilson in the receiving department but averaged 11.5 yards on punt returns. Also, had 9 carries for 91 yards and 2 TD’s. He can be used multiple ways.
All that said, we couldn’t afford him anyway and we are stuck with Wilson’s contract this year unless he is restructured.
My hope is he makes a huge leap in year 2 in this system.
If we can’t trade Wilson and I’m not sure we can, we need him to produce. But I also see a restructure coming.
I would be happy with either or both.
It would be nice to see Ezukanma take the next step in year 2. I think our playbook was too much for him from what he did in college. He needs the thinking to slow down so he can play fast.
The same with Tindall at LB but he now has a new coach and system that I think will be easier for him. Fangio runs very common formations and concepts. His base is also 3-4 and that’s what Georgia runs so it won’t be a total change for him.

I understand the goodwill sentiment but it’s not really ethically fair when it comes to roster building for all 32 teams. Compensatory picks were supposed to be about subsidizing a team that lost good players to FA and they didn’t sign same quality replacements. Now it’s about social issues.

Rock – Your Grier hate is in full bloom. Injuries are part of the game. You know if Tua stayed healthy the entire season, we were probably the #2 or #3 seed. I suppose you could say we never should have drafted Tua, and that’s fair. The Niners spent a 3rd RD pick on Frank Gore back in 2005, and that was after coming off of TWO ACL tears. Gore went on to play 15 years at a position where injuries happen all the time. I know everyone and their mother think that Tua is done, or that he will be injured every season, if he even gets past next season. Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re wrong. Maybe Tua plays another 10-15 years and never has concussion issues or any other injuries, and plays like he did most of last season for the rest of his career and cements his place as one of the great Miami Dolphins QB’s.

Dolphins sign Tom Brady and Lamar Jackson. Both players intend to play both ways, along with most of the team, and the Dolphins will enter the season dressing only 35 players.
So now we have plenty of space to fil out our roster, plus we have an additional 13.6 mil june 2nd when Jones cap savings kicks in.
That Jones money will let us pick up a guy or two after teams start trimming rosters down to 53, pick up injury replacements in-season if necessary, or we can roll it over to next season which washes out Jones’ 10 mil cap hit next year.

Chubb, Armstead, and Hill have been restructured, so the additional money, that goes against the 2024 cap, from these restructures, is about a wash (just an assumption) with Byron’s 13m cap savings in June, which can be carried over to next year, but we all know, that in June we’ll sign some 1 year contracts and use that money, but whatever the point is they’re kicking the can down the road and have factored in Byron’s cap savings now

While restructuring creates cap relief now, there does come a time where you have to pay the piper. At that point, you have let players go so we better start building a young foundation when that time comes. You can’t keep picking up big contracts in Free Agency, that’s just not sustainable.
Assumption is the cap will go up about 15m per year for the foreseeable future, so that is being factored in

I never had a ‘man-crush’ on Cook, but he would be nice. However — and like Steve stated above — I don’t think we’ll ever try to bring in an overpriced RB. The Shanahan system produces 1,000-yard backs out of UDFAs.
