Dolphins commit to Tua – Pick up 5th year

This was music to my ears, music I desperately wanted to hear. This fan is simply disgusted by all the negativity, the naysayers, know-it-all-neurosurgeon-fanboys from other teams, and really all the talking heads who were in lockstep with the fanboys. The Miami Dolphins basically just said STFU!!! Tua is our QB, in 2023, and at least through 2024 as well. Unless the Dolphins had information that Tua’s next big hit would be his last, and the man would need to retire, then this was the right thing to do. Tua is a winner, and if we had him the whole season, we could have been the #2 or #3 seed in the AFC. We might have had a BYE in the playoffs or played at home, with Tua starting. It didn’t happen, and it appears the Dolphins were very cautious with their young QB and perhaps a tad overprotective, but that was a move made for the future.

There is so much hate for this kid, yes, especially from our own Dolphins fanbase. For those people, Tua is too much of a risk, or to the extremists, not talented enough to win. To those imbeciles, I present Exhibit A. Tua’s record as the QB of the Miami Dolphins, 21-13. You’d have to go back as far as Chad Pennington in 2008 to find a more favorable W/L record. Unfortunately, Chad Pennington, 11-5 only made it one season before retiring. Knucklehead Dolphins fans will say “Tua had the best WR’s in the NFL, that’s why!”. OK, so he was 8-5 this season with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. What about 2021, when it was Jaylen Waddle, a hobbled DeVante Parker for 10 games, Mack Hollins, Isaiah Ford, with the backfield of Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed, Phillip Lindsay for 4 games, and Malcolm Brown. In 2020, it was a hobbled DeVante Parker for 14 games, Mack Hollins, Lynn Bowden Jr., Jakeem Grant etc. 21-13, not earthshaking, but it’s good for a .617 winning %, better than all but Chad Pennington, who did it for one season 14 years ago. Yet, some Dolphins fans will still sling arrows at Tua. Ridiculous!

Let’s take a different angle. Tua is a team player, a genuinely nice kid. He works as hard as anyone on the team, his HC Mike McDaniel loves him. Yes, we know that former Head Coach Brian Flores did not like Tua, but where the F is Brian Flores now, he with his nonsensical lawsuit against the NFL? Is he a Head Coach now? No! What Head Coach sabotages his own team because he doesn’t like the starting QB? Brian Flores. Flores pulled Tua out of games he struggled in, and that kind of tact shows a lack of confidence in a player, and in turn, stunts his development. Players need to play through adversity, but Flores didn’t allow Tua to grow. Despite Brian Flores, Tua grew anyway, and now with the confidence of his new HC, and the 3rd different offensive system, he flourished. 2023 will be the first time in Tua’s career that he will have the same offensive system in place to build upon.

People will mock Tua because of his injury history. People will laugh that he’s taking Jiu-Jitsu to learn how to protect his body when he’s hit and falls. Some people think that’s comical, that he’s a 25 year old man that should know to fall. How people can hate a person that is doing everything he can to be better at his craft, one that will work relentlessly to do so is beyond me. Personally, I feel bad for his detractors, I think they’re a sad bunch. Not since Dan Marino have we had a successful QB for more than one season. Tua was NUMBER ONE in QB passer rating last season (105.5). The QBR is the most comprehensive metric for a QB and Tua was the best! Better than Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, Allen, ALL OF THEM! NUMBER ONE in yards per attempt (8.7). NUMBER ONE in yards per completion (13.1). There are 3 other categories that Tua was tops in, yet people still hate. It’s a ridiculous phenomenon that I believe only social media could breed.

I look forward to a great 2023 season with our Miami Dolphins. We’ve cleared lots of cap space, to the tune of $28M +, and will get an additional boost when we cut Byron Jones June 1st, to put us over $40M. We have a lot of guys I’d like to re-sign, this will enable that to happen. Elandon Roberts, Nik Needham, Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Brandon Shell and possibly even AVG, although I think he’s going to be playing elsewhere. There will likely be a surprise signing as well, but hopefully we’ll fill our roster out well in free agency and then the draft, and then again in free agency after the draft. Our team is close, on the cusp of being a legit playoff contender and more.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

  1. steveccnv says:

Signing Berrios for me reduces the need for a TE, that can move the chains

I think between Smythe and Saubert we’ll be good enough at TE

Would really like a Witten clone, but wishlist more that need

We’ll still add a TE or 2, but it’s not a priority now

How many times have we seen the Bills slot receivers keep a drive going with a big 3rd down catch?

Think we were missing a little bug last year, putting Hill there just draws a double team at a position that should be wide open

  2. steveccnv says:

Additionally Mostert won’t have to lumber back there returning kicks

Berrios has 107 career receptions for 1,085 yards with five touchdowns. He has returned 67 punts with an 11.4 yards per return average along with 67 kick returns for an average of 24.9 yards with one return for a 102-yard touchdown.

    • steveccnv says:

Only 15 receptions last year, but what the jets did with him last year and what he has done are 2 different things

46, and 37 receptions the previous 2 years for just over and under 400 yards

I can see him catching 40 or 50 passes for us, if needed, now if we don’t really need him and he mostly contributes on STs that’s fine too

      He’s mostly a security blanket on O

      • CavalierKong says:

Even if he’s just our dedicated returner and only catches 15 passes, that’s enough.

  3. CavalierKong says:

We keep making small improvements to the team. Love the Berrios signing.

Agreed about giving Wilson back to the Cowboys for nothing, just get his contract off the books.

  4. steveccnv says:

What can Grier do with the possible 6m, if Wilson is traded?

    OL help, real OL help?

  5. steveccnv says:

Berrios should replace Cracraft, if Wilson is traded Sherfield may have a spot

    • bailbondmike says:

      Right now we have:
      Tyreek Hill
      Cedrick Wilson
      Jaylen Waddle
      Erik Ezukanma
      Freddie Swain
      Braylon Sanders
      Braxton Berrios

If we were to trade Wilson, they should definitely bring Sherfield back.

I am hoping Braylon Sanders makes that jump this year as well as EZ.

      • steveccnv says:

Sanders and EZ playing in games, like the do in camp/PS would mean we don’t need Sherfield, but Sherfield is a great blocker

  6. steveccnv says:

WTF Grier, no news the past hour😜

  7. steveccnv says:

His slot resume might be why Hill expressed his excitement for Berrios’ signing by calling him “Wes Welker 2.0” on Twitter. Welker, a former NFL standout player, excelled at the slot position, and happens to be coach of Miami’s wide receiver unit.

Berrios played like Welker2.0 at the U, and at times for jets, wouldn’t it be something, if he could be that security blanket for Tua, and keep Hill and Waddlebfrom having to run so many short routes

  8. steveccnv says:

We seem to have depth now, but we’re loaded at the top, with maybe 9 or 10 players in the top 100

Ramsey, X, Holland, Chubb, Phillips, Wilkins, Armstead, Tua, Waddle and Hill

    • steveccnv says:

Next 100 Baker, Ogbah, Mostert, Seiler, Jones, Williams, and maybe Hunt and Long

I’d say, if we stay relatively healthy, sky is the limit, why not?

  9. Glad we signed Berrios.

I heard that Dallas wished they didn’t let Wilson go. Maybe a trade back could happen.

    Here’s some OL help.
    https://phinphanatic.com/2023/03/16/miami-dolphins-signing-two-offensive-linemen/

  10. bailbondmike says:

So far Grier has signed or resigned (cost this year rounded up or down)
    CB Jalen Ramsey 4.1 million
    QB Mike White 2.8
    RB Jeff Wilson 2.2
    RB Raheem Mostert 2.2
    LB Duke Riley 1.9
    TE Eric Saubert 1.7
    RB Salvon Ahmed 1.4
    OT Kendall Lamm 1.1
    WR Freddie Swain 1.0

We basically resigned our entire RB room for about the same amount Miles Sanders is going to get this season.

Still waiting on these to hit the books. I don’t expect anything big on them.
    WR Braxton Berrios
    S Deshon Elliott
    OG Dan Feeney
    LB David Long
    RB Myles Gaskin
    CB Nik Needham

  11. steveccnv says:

The #Patriots are giving WR JuJu Smith-Schuster a 3-year deal worth $33m, source said. A big investment.

    Good signing by cheats

  12. Rockphin says:

Jalen Ramsey on joining Dolphins secondary: ‘On paper, this is the best group that I’ve been a part of’

  13. steveccnv says:

    25-1 to win the SB

Glad we didn’t have Brady, his former teams are 65-1 and 75-1

  14. Mike, I’m sure you know by now but Edwin Diaz is done for the season with a torn patella tendon after celebrating during the WBC. Ugh!!!

  15. Elandon Roberts signs with the Steelers.

  16. naplesfan2010 says:

Only 4 CBs in the whole league had more run stops than Kohou. 1 was Jalen Ramsey.

  17. naplesfan2010 says:

Juju doesn’t scare me any more than Devante does. Good WR but not like a Diggs or Chase level guy.

  18. steveccnv says:

Is Jalen Ramsey to the Dolphins the worst move in NFL free agency so far?

    Deadspin

For one, it’s not FA, it was a trade, so there’s that, but this is directed at the Rams, so I’d say yes, absolutely the worst move to start the league year

  19. Rockphin says:

We have a Full Back (again)

  20. Rockphin says:

Van Ginkel met with the Patriots and is now on his way to Las Vegas. I hope he doesn’t sign with the Pats. I liked him.

  21. naplesfan2010 says:

The coaches or front office or somebody really likes John Lovett.
He didn’t play a single snap last year, if I remember correctly, and yet he’s re signed.

Not like we don’t have a FB on the roster.
And i thought Ingold played well enough last year.

  22. naplesfan2010 says:

I’m not sure why we would not want van Ginkel back unless it’s the money.
He made plays for us and plays with very high energy.

Maybe his tape shows flaws the coaches think they can’t fix
and those flaws make it so they don’t want him on the field for us,
like blowing coverage due to poor athleticism
or playing too light to be an Edge rusher.

  23. naplesfan2010 says:

Lovett was projected to be a Taysom Hill type guy who can pass from the wildcat as a former QB but is a big body goal line rusher as well.

  24. naplesfan2010 says:

Bobby Wagner is still out there, right?
As Steve said, give Ced Wilson away to anyone who will pay his contract
and use the money on Wagner.
    Sign him and draft OL.
or use the money on a LG
    such as Isaac Seumalo.

  25. naplesfan2010 says:

Is it true that we have Christian McCaffrey’s brother coaching for us now?

  26. naplesfan2010 says:

Yes of course … we do need a camp body FB to help with TC.
    as in Training Camp

I was thrown off because those are my initials, so it was too distracting.

I thought you wanted me to run our system.

  27. Rockphin says:

Do you know how every year we have to set our clocks forward an hour and then set our clocks back an hour? Why don’t we just do half an hour next time and call it a day?

  28. pheloniusphish says:

Sitting here with a good cigar and an 18 year old Glennfiddich thinking, “Who hates Grier now?”

  29. The Flying Pig says:

Looking like OD is going g to have the drag of his dreams since it’s looks like we will concentrate on OL via the draft

  30. The Flying Pig says:

In terms of RB, I still think we can add some one, but maybe we can wait to see if some one gets cut. It’s sort of a luxury addition at this point

  31. randydolfan1947 says:

HEY BAILBOND MIKE; Your Charleston Cougars put up a valiant effort today, coming from WAY BACK to tie the game at 53-53 late in the game!! Unfortunately, San Diego State won 62-57 with a very strong showing in the last two minutes of the game. I thought I might see my second BIG upset of the day (after Furman shocked Virginia) but it was not to be. Kudos to the Cougars!
    ——————–
A LADY SPORTSWRITER GUARANTEED that Memphis would defeat Florida Atlantic tomorrow night in her USA TODAY column, which I accidentally left at work.
The Tigers are favored by 2 over the Owls. She then went on to say that Memphis would defeat #4 ranked Purdue in the second round!!! – – We’ll see, kiddies.

I’ve been waiting for this day for a very long time.
    GO OWLS!!

  32. CavalierKong says:

LOL, the NY to MIA connection

  33. randydolfan1947 says:

WOW!!!! #2 Seeded Arizona falls to #15 seeded Princeton!!! Thanks to Furman and Princeton for killing off hundreds of thousands entries into office pools across the country!

  34. Berrios is a nice signing. He’ll likely take over KR and PR duties and be a 3rd and 4th WR. He can also be a threat on jet sweeps and gimmick plays. I like this kid’s game.

I met his mother at the hotel by the Meadowlands when I went to the Dolphins/Jets game last year. I told her and her husband and their friends that I wished we would have signed him a couple of years ago. Now he’s a Dolphin. 🙂

    • Ken says:

Now if you can only meet Zach Wilson’s mom at a hotel

      • Ken says:

        I know 😃

      • For the record his mom is a pretty southern bell. Very nice woman. They all were. I was wearing a Dolphins jersey and it was after the game at the hotel watching the Padres beat the Mets in the playoffs. They asked me what do I think of Berrios? So I talked highly of him. Later that night they approached me on their way up to their room and his mom says by the way I’m Braxton Berrios’ mom. That’s when I looked at them all and said ya’ll set me up. Everyone laughed.

What if I would have said ahhh… he sucks I hate that guy. LOL

  35. bailbondmike says:

OD, it was a frustrating loss for Charleston. They shot flat out terrible. They were a good shooting team, over 35% on 3 pointers but only made 5 of 24 this game. Also, their FG % is close to 50% but only made 18 of 56. Can’t win like that.

I will be pulling for your guys.

  36. I know he’s been up and down so far but the team really seems to believe that Eichenberg can be a good LG. They might also feel that Jackson can still be a good RT. They both need to stay healthy so they can get better.

    • Ken says:

I see nothing that leads me to have any confidence in either of them.

      • I know you don’t. But the coaches seem to see things differently. We did make a lot of plays and score TDs with them on the field. But the injuries stunted that. We used so many different lineups with like 12 different playoffs. That’s not ideal. This was also the first year playing this scheme and it takes time. We’ll see how it all pans out.

      • Brian in NY says:

Tim, they missed 27 games combined last season. Do the coaches see something in them, or are they just talking them up because they are still on the team, under rookie contracts, and HOPING they can become solid starters. As Ken has said (myself as well) they have shown nothing to demonstrate they are reliable and capable NFL starters.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I think people have written off our young OL way too early too

But there no way around the risk we are taking if we rely on them – it can derail our season if we can’t protect Tua

  37. mf13ss says:

Nothing against David Long the player, but I cannot believe we didn’t re-sign Elandon Roberts. Makes me wonder if Roberts was a Josh Boyer loyalist who opted to go elsewhere after we fired Boyer.

Who knows what really happened, but I’m going to miss Roberts.

  38. Wyoming85 says:

    Damn!

  39. mf13ss says:

What? They signed Robert’s just to release Myles Jack

I haven’t watched Jack lately, but isn’t he still a very good coverage LB?
    —————
Seems Jack never materialized into that coverage LB at the NFL level, after his massive injury in college. That really sucks for him.

Anyway, by that time I was too drunk to sample the Glenfiddich.

    Maybe next time.

  46. mf13ss says:

I doubt he lasts to us in the 2nd round, but what do ya do if Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa, is sitting there for the taking? I think you’ve got to take him.

    • The Flying Pig says:

He would probably be the BPA if he was there

But right now I think RT and TE are out top priorities

    • mf13ss says:

Never mind about Jack Campbell: he’s an underwear champion (Combine was great). He’s not flashing on tape whatsoever.

      • mf13ss says:

I don’t generally discard a player so quickly as I have just done with Jack Campbell, but I just did: 3rd rounder at best. Somebody will jump on him though after his incredible Combine performance.

  53. randydolfan1947 says:

GOTTA AGREE WITH KEN on Eich and Jackson. Neither one of them have shown me that they can consistently protect our quarterbacks (3 of whom were on the injury list during parts of last season). By my calculation we STILL NEED 2 starters for our O-Line plus at least ONE solid back-up who can step-in during the inevitable O-Line injury. OUR O-Line is, as of this second, among the WORST IN THE NFL. NO WAY TUA MAKES IT THRU 17 GAME SEASON WITH THIS MOTLEY CRUE!!!
    —————
BAIL BOND MIKE: Great to know you’ll be rooting for FAU tomorrow night!! – – This team will play 9 or more different players tomorrow night, as per usual. They are one of the best 3-point shooting teams in Division 1 Basketball. And their 7 foot 1 inch Russian center (Vlad Goldin) will be VERY difficult for a shorter Memphis team to deal with.
    —————
FAU has never won a game in March Madness.
TOMORROW NIGHT, history will be made when FAU upsets Memphis!!
I’ve waited 54 years for this day!! GO OWLS!!

Good Night to all of you.

  55. Rhino says:

Ramsey to Armando: “ahhh, so bath salts are NOT just a rumor”

  56. Brian, I know Eichenberg and Jackson missed a lot of games last year. I’m talking about the coaches believing in their ability. It’s not my opinion.

    • Brian in NY says:

You said we scored a lot of TDs with them, that’s why I brought up the games. What are the coaches SUPPOSED to say, that don’t believe in their ability? They say what they are supposed to say. Like I said, they are in rookie contracts, and the dolphins don’t have a ton of options right now. I just watch the games, look at the analytics on them and neither looks pretty Tim!

  57. The Flying Pig says:

Savings all the Ruggles pics in case we draft him

  58. The Flying Pig says:

    Lol

  59. Phindog says:

  60. Brian in NY says:

    Patriots signing Gesicki. Ugh.

  61. Brian in NY says:

    Albert Breer

    @AlbertBreer
Source: The Patriots are signing TE Mike Gesicki to a one-year deal that maxes out at $9 million.

  62. naplesfan2010 says:

    Gesicki nooooo not there!
I mean, we definitely know how to defend Gesicki, so I’m not worried about that, but now I can’t even root for him to have a great career if it means the patsies win games!

  63. naplesfan2010 says:

If Gesicki’s their marquee FA signing, the patsies are in Biiiig Trouble.

  64. steveccnv says:

While Gesicki in New England seems an odd pairing given his lack of blocking prowess, Bill Belichick has made it clear in discussing the TE when preparing to play Miami throughout the years that he views Gesicki as a big WR.

If you viewed him as just a WR, would you pay him up to 9m?

Think of Orande Gadsden speed, and without any physicality

Even at WR he’s not equal to Sherfield

    • naplesfan2010 says:

I think, as someone up the page said, that Berrios will fill the slot role better than Gesicki did and give us a KR / PR into the bargain.

  65. naplesfan2010 says:

The pats have that old Penn State coach as their OC now, but I don’t think he was there when Gesicki was at Penn State, but there might be a philosophy match in there somewhere.
Or it might just be coincidence.

Don’t they already have Hunter Henry at TE?

    • Rhino says:

“started 36 of 37 games” … these are the things I like to hear because it shows a guy can consistently play as an NFL starter, rather than hoping a 3rd round pick can step in day one and do that.

    • steveccnv says:

Spotrac has him at 3.3m market value, signing him fits in with what I mentioned below about not paying 5m for a RT

Something I didn’t consider, which makes Fant even more valuable to us is playing LT, when Armstead sits out a few games

I hope we sign him today

  66. Rhino says:

Let Berrios take all the hits from the slot over the middle, until the Jets-stink gets knocked off of him. lol

  67. steveccnv says:

It’s seems unreasonable to pay an FA RT or LG even 5m to compete with Jackson or Eichenberg, if you feel either can still be a starting OLman

If you don’t like them, cut them and move on, if you feel they might be what you’re looking for, but don’t exactly trust them to get it done, then bring in low contract and steady vets

We’ve got guys on the roster now, that can provide some competition, break in case of fire guys

I think the next step is to draft an RT in 2nd and an OG in the 3rd, if either bites this year, and either Eich or Jackson still doesn’t progress get rid of them at EOY

  68. CavalierKong says:

Gesicki got a 1 yr deal for 9 mil. It looks like he just didn’t have a lot of options. I’ve always liked Gesicki the person and professional, so I’m a little sad to have to root against him now.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he has some games where he is the lead receiver for the Pets, and like I said last year, I think if Gesicki is leading your team in receiving, you have issues on offense.

    • Rhino says:

this signing should also help shape the market for several remaining TE free agents. I said a couple days ago I didn’t think any of them would get $10m/yr, let alone the $15m market value sportrac has on many of the top guys.

      • CavalierKong says:

I’d never really looked at Spotrac’s ‘market value’ before this year. Seems like it has been way off on a number of players.

    • steveccnv says:

Up to 9m, like Mike White up to 16m I believe, meaning top value with incentives, but that doesn’t count against the cap

This is a low end contract, probably about half what Gesicki got last year

      • CavalierKong says:

Oh, I didn’t catch that. So something like base 6m plus incentives. Yeah, not a great deal.

  69. Rhino says:

Maybe we don’t have a punter yet because MM doesn’t plan on punting this season. lol

  70. Krishna says:

I think we might be in a position to shore up our depth chart at this point.

Finding an OL or two in the draft that will be here for years would sure make a difference in a number of ways.

We may be good at TE for now….Berrios seems to fill that “hole” nicely for our scheme and MM. And, he’s a fast mother fucker…lol.

    • steveccnv says:

Also Lovett plays some H-Back and can be converted to a TE, I can see him being a poor-mans Kittle

Was really impressed by him at the practices I went to last year

      • steveccnv says:

6’2 and 236 vs 6’4 and 250 for Kittle, but we won’t be asking him to make any Gesicki circus catches, just block and move the chains, Saubert would be used more on the goal line

  71. Krishna says:

Maybe we don’t want Morstead back, but I have no idea why….

After rookie tight end Will Dissly got injured in a week 4 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, Fant started to play an offensive tackle/tight end hybrid role. He would line up as a sixth offensive lineman, either on the line itself or outside, and declare himself an eligible receiver. Fant had great success in this new role and helped the 2018 Seahawks achieve the number one ranked rushing offense in the league.

On December 10, 2018, in a week 13 Monday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, Fant recorded his first career reception, a 9-yard pass from quarterback Russell Wilson.[14]
    2019

Fant continued to function as a hybrid lineman for the Seahawks in 2019. He also functioned as the primary backup offensive tackle, filling in for an injured Duane Brown during parts of the season.[15]

On December 2, 2019, in a Monday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, Fant garnered attention for helping the Seahawks rush for a season-high 218 yards in a 37–30 win. He reported as an eligible receiver on 42 plays during the game and lined up at multiple positions along the line.[16]

One year he did not give up a single sack.

He played college basketball at Western Kentucky.

Sounds like he’s very versatile, let’s get him signed, seems like he can bring competition, sure up some positions, and can be used in several packages

Seems every day we keep getting more players signed, Grier keeps exceeding expectations

Bailey had an average and net average worse than Palardy last year, and Morstead was quite a bit better than both in both categories. (I’m using Palardy as reference because he was so bad for us in 2021.)

    Bailey (42.1/35.3)
    Palardy (42.4/37.3)
    Morstead (46.4/40.6)

Bailey and Palardy both had 5 touchbacks
    Morstead had 2

    Bring back Morstead.

    • Krishna says:

Morstead only played for the veteran league minimum last year, according to media? Wow.

    • steveccnv says:

I’d be fine with Morestead, he’s consistent and seems to be able to place his punts with a sideways bounce, so it doesn’t go into EZ

He kicks high and in accordance with his coverage team, can punt for a better avg, but cares more about net avg

      He has football smarts

  75. steveccnv says:

It appears the Fins think Morestead’s net punting avg of 40.2 is the problem, but I think it was the coverage, he should be re-signed

    • CavalierKong says:

Last year, Morstead’s 40.6 net average was a lot better than Bailey’s 35.3.

Maybe they like Bailey’s upside more.

I just read Bailey also was suspended by Belicheat last year. Gotta wonder what that is about. Not often you see a punter suspended by the HC, lol.
