Dolphins commit to Tua – Pick up 5th year

This was music to my ears, music I desperately wanted to hear. This fan is simply disgusted by all the negativity, the naysayers, know-it-all-neurosurgeon-fanboys from other teams, and really all the talking heads who were in lockstep with the fanboys. The Miami Dolphins basically just said STFU!!! Tua is our QB, in 2023, and at least through 2024 as well. Unless the Dolphins had information that Tua’s next big hit would be his last, and the man would need to retire, then this was the right thing to do. Tua is a winner, and if we had him the whole season, we could have been the #2 or #3 seed in the AFC. We might have had a BYE in the playoffs or played at home, with Tua starting. It didn’t happen, and it appears the Dolphins were very cautious with their young QB and perhaps a tad overprotective, but that was a move made for the future.

There is so much hate for this kid, yes, especially from our own Dolphins fanbase. For those people, Tua is too much of a risk, or to the extremists, not talented enough to win. To those imbeciles, I present Exhibit A. Tua’s record as the QB of the Miami Dolphins, 21-13. You’d have to go back as far as Chad Pennington in 2008 to find a more favorable W/L record. Unfortunately, Chad Pennington, 11-5 only made it one season before retiring. Knucklehead Dolphins fans will say “Tua had the best WR’s in the NFL, that’s why!”. OK, so he was 8-5 this season with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. What about 2021, when it was Jaylen Waddle, a hobbled DeVante Parker for 10 games, Mack Hollins, Isaiah Ford, with the backfield of Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed, Phillip Lindsay for 4 games, and Malcolm Brown. In 2020, it was a hobbled DeVante Parker for 14 games, Mack Hollins, Lynn Bowden Jr., Jakeem Grant etc. 21-13, not earthshaking, but it’s good for a .617 winning %, better than all but Chad Pennington, who did it for one season 14 years ago. Yet, some Dolphins fans will still sling arrows at Tua. Ridiculous!

Let’s take a different angle. Tua is a team player, a genuinely nice kid. He works as hard as anyone on the team, his HC Mike McDaniel loves him. Yes, we know that former Head Coach Brian Flores did not like Tua, but where the F is Brian Flores now, he with his nonsensical lawsuit against the NFL? Is he a Head Coach now? No! What Head Coach sabotages his own team because he doesn’t like the starting QB? Brian Flores. Flores pulled Tua out of games he struggled in, and that kind of tact shows a lack of confidence in a player, and in turn, stunts his development. Players need to play through adversity, but Flores didn’t allow Tua to grow. Despite Brian Flores, Tua grew anyway, and now with the confidence of his new HC, and the 3rd different offensive system, he flourished. 2023 will be the first time in Tua’s career that he will have the same offensive system in place to build upon.

People will mock Tua because of his injury history. People will laugh that he’s taking Jiu-Jitsu to learn how to protect his body when he’s hit and falls. Some people think that’s comical, that he’s a 25 year old man that should know to fall. How people can hate a person that is doing everything he can to be better at his craft, one that will work relentlessly to do so is beyond me. Personally, I feel bad for his detractors, I think they’re a sad bunch. Not since Dan Marino have we had a successful QB for more than one season. Tua was NUMBER ONE in QB passer rating last season (105.5). The QBR is the most comprehensive metric for a QB and Tua was the best! Better than Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, Allen, ALL OF THEM! NUMBER ONE in yards per attempt (8.7). NUMBER ONE in yards per completion (13.1). There are 3 other categories that Tua was tops in, yet people still hate. It’s a ridiculous phenomenon that I believe only social media could breed.

I look forward to a great 2023 season with our Miami Dolphins. We’ve cleared lots of cap space, to the tune of $28M +, and will get an additional boost when we cut Byron Jones June 1st, to put us over $40M. We have a lot of guys I’d like to re-sign, this will enable that to happen. Elandon Roberts, Nik Needham, Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Brandon Shell and possibly even AVG, although I think he’s going to be playing elsewhere. There will likely be a surprise signing as well, but hopefully we’ll fill our roster out well in free agency and then the draft, and then again in free agency after the draft. Our team is close, on the cusp of being a legit playoff contender and more.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

    That is all.

With a day to reflect, another thing I love about the Ramsey trade …

it’s not my money so looking at it regarding assets … this trade was a STEAL!! Grier must have some compromising photos of Rams FO lol.

also, there are so many teams with a SHIT load of cap space it seems that we’d have a hard time competing for TOP TALENT anyway. Unless they simply want to play for Miami at a lesser $ (which most FAs won’t do).

I will keep my fingers crossed today, but I’m not really expecting “big news”.

  3. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

You know? Just Fuck all the NFL talking heads! CBS has the Dolphins listed as the third most intriguing teams heading into start of new league year. NUMBER 3!

Then you read why and it is because it goes away for good, even though the team has said they are not interested and the player has said he is staying retired, until ?whatever? happens to prove those true then it is the 3rd most exciting story in the NFL?? !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! GO FUCK YOURSELVES! IT IS NOT!!!!

They go on to say that Lamar Jackson’s free agency is also worth watching….NO DOUCHE BAG IT IS NOT.

So the two most interesting things about the Dolphins, enough to make them the third most interesting in the league are bull shit.

  4. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Just realized that we have ZERO TE’s on the roster now. One RB and Zero TE’s..

They have a lot of work to do.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What about Smythe and Tanner Conner?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Doh! That’s right. I read one of the beat guys say that now that Hunter is gone we don’t have any TE’s under contract. Obviously wrong now that you pointed them out. Smythe is URFA next season.

  5. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

RB is an issue now, in a few days I doubt it is

I expect to see Mostert and Wilson signed this week, unless they have a wink wink in place to sign them after June 1st

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I agree… run it back with both those guys then draft one to give us 4 RBs.

Just curious what others think, but if we only sign one of Mostert/Wilson, I think I lean toward Wilson because of the WAY he runs the ball… gotta have a physical RB on the roster. Nevertheless, having both back reduces the “learning curve” on the offensive side of the ball.

  6. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Yesterday Sam Wyche on NFL Access said that Ramsey, working under Fangio (not just a Fangio system), and surrounded by the rest of that talent, would not surprise him if he ended up Def Player of Year. hmmm. I like that.

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    The Bears trade #1 pick

The full package of assets sent to Chicago reads like a shopping list: the ninth-overall pick this year, a second-round selection in 2023 (No. 61 overall originally from the 49ers), a first-round pick in 2024, a second-round pick in 2025, and Moore, a receiver who just completed the first year of a three-year, $61.88 million contract with the Panthers.

  9. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

  11. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Here’s a nice stat I pulled from an article that confirms why Tua’s option was picked up:

“When quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was on the field, Miami recorded 0.13 expected points added (EPA) per play — more than the Bills with Josh Allen (0.12) or the Bengals with Joe Burrow (0.08).”

So let’s resign our own defensive guys if we can, and put the rest of our efforts into protecting Tua like it’s an “egg drop contest” 🙂

The single best thing I read yesterday was that several other teams were bidding for Jalen and offering the Rams much better draft capital, but none of them had a Hunter Long.

I expect our draft to be more about future vision, than current success, and since we don’t know what our FO has in mind for the future, trying to speculate on the draft is kind of pointless

Long was picked to develop and hopefully replace Gesicki, none of us saw TE coming in that spot

The only position where day 2 picks usually make an impact in their rookie year is RB

I hope Mike White doesn’t play a regular season snap for us because Tua stays healthy all season, BUT if he does have to come in as relief I hope we get the guy who torched the Bengals for 405 yards and 3 TD’s in ’21.

Tua GOT PAID his signing bonus, THIS year he will get paid roughly 1M in salary and a roster bonus of 3.7m. that is 4.7M NOT 9.6.

    — DBs (hoping we sign Jordan Poyer)

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m with you on all these except I don’t know if we can afford Hayden Hurst but we can afford the best run-blocking TE in the NFL which is Josh Oliver.
He had 2 TDs like Hurst, but he averaged over 10 YPC, 2 YPC more than Hurst.
Of course Hurst caught 52 passes while Oliver only caught 14.

    LOL @ Steve.
I’d love to see either of those scenarios and neither is impossibly far-fetched.

from Bleacher Report “10 worst INTs by Favre”

Many people will remember Favre’s last throw as a member of the New York Jets. He threw an interception to Andre Goodman, but that wasn’t the worst pick he threw in that game. In the 2nd quarter Favre’s pass was picked off by rookie defensive end Phillip Merling and returned 25 yards for a touchdown. The Dolphins would go on to win the game 24-17.

The loss ended any chance the Jets had to make the playoffs.

    not counting Super Bowls.

  82. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

so what exactly is the thinking on what Jets need to give in a Rodgers trade? Just draft capital or some of those young stars (GB should ask for Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner plus picks lmao)

  83. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Before the Mike White signing, we had 13.7 mil in cap space not counting the Byron Jones June 1 cut. Depending on the contract, we don’t have much to work with in signing any other big names unless they clear more money.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I read Ramsey’s contract will be reworked, so before the trade we had 28m, after it showed 11m

Expect we’ll see about 21m, then subtract out White’s portion about 4m or 5m, leaving us with about 17m or 16m

Starting to take a look at the late round/projected UDFA RB’s.

For those who still want a big back. Utah’s Tavion Thomas measured in at 6’0 237 pounds. He ran a slow 40 time but that is not what he is about. He also only caught 10 passes during college.

  87. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

As long as Buffalo has Allen they’re dangerous

  88. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I just had to throw a big RB out there for those who want one.

Again, these are late round to UDFA prospects.

IMO, more fitting is Evan Hull, 5’10 209 from northwestern. Ran 4.47 at the combine and a good receiver with 88 receptions over the last 2 seasons.

  89. I wonder where Myles Gaskin will end up. He’s a solid back to give a team depth. Always plays hard, plays bigger than he is and can catch. I wish him well. He did some nice things for us.

  90. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I would love to see Josh Allen start the ’23 season on fire!

  91. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Does anyone find it odd that all these guys are getting “signed” and free agency doesn’t start until Wednesday?

Shouldn’t the NFL punish someone for breaking the rules?

    • It’s the legal tampering period. Nothing is official until 4PM on Wednesday.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Contracts can’t be executed or agreed to in principle during the legal tampering window.

Players can’t take team visits during this period or make travel arrangements for visits.

Contract announcements can’t be made by teams until the new league year begins on Wednesday.

      • I know that’s what I said. These deals have been agreed upon. This has been going for years.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      I agree with you …
      but
      from yard barker

Only a league that asks its players to “survive the ground” after “making a football move” could coin a phrase like “legal tampering.” Here’s what it means in the NFL.

Legal tampering is a two-day period before the start of the NFL league year in which NFL teams may negotiate “all aspects of an NFL player contract” with agents of prospective free agents.

Both sides may exchange numbers, but nothing is official. Agreements cannot be made or announced before the start of free agency at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

So where’s the “tampering”? Technically, NFL contracts don’t really expire until the start of the league year. That’s why players can only speak or visit with their most recent team during the legal tampering period. If a player has interest in another team, all communications must be handled by the agent.

It’s important to note that legal tampering applies only to unrestricted free agents. Agents for restricted free agents and exclusive rights free agents can’t discuss contracts until free agency begins.

      … hmmm

…It’s the reporters who are announcing these deals, not the players or teams.

NFL teams tampered for years, and the league office could do nothing about it. I guess the “legal tampering” period just makes them feel better about it!
