The very first move, preceding the free agency frenzy of signing, was bringing in one of the best defensive minds in football, new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. I believe many of us here felt that former Dolphins DC Josh Boyer was in over his head at times. Mostly, I think we felt that he was unable to adjust, to bring something other than his zero coverage blitz scheme, which to me was too all or nothing. Fangio, much like Bill Belichick in New England knows that you have to be flexible and approach each team a little differently. While the Patriots offense hasn’t been the same since Tom Brady left, the defense has been a quality defense without Brady at the helm, as high as the #2 defense in ’21, down to just out of the top 10 in ’22, at #11. I’m not saying that Fangio and Belichick run the same schemes, no, I’m saying that both of these seasoned veterans know you can do exactly the same thing against every opponent. You have to morph a little, change, and adapt to what you face each week. This is where Vic Fangio will make a tremendous difference, and that’s without giving serious accolades for assembling what could be the most talented Miami Dolphins defensive roster since OD’s “No Name Defense”.
Last year, before the season began, I thought we were a defense on the precipice of becoming a top 10 defense. Unfortunately, a multitude of injuries derailed that. Regardless of the injuries though, I still felt like our defense underperformed, especially when CB Xavien Howard wasn’t hobbled by his groin injuries, and we had acquired OLB/DE Bradley Chubb from the Broncos. We already had a formidable defensive line (despite losing Emmanuel Ogbah) of Zach Sieler, Raekwon Davis and IMO, our best defensive player in ’22, Christian Wilkins. Add to that the LB crew of Chubb, Baker, Roberts and Phillips, and there was so much potential for a team with a ferocious pass rush. It never materialized, never got off the ground. Elandon Roberts had his best season as a Miami Dolphin and yet this team missed boatloads of tackles, and was relatively toothless as far as pressure and sacks were concerned. That’s where Vic Fangio comes in. In lieu of sending numerous defensive backs to rush the passer, this team will be more reliant on the front 7 taking care of pressuring the QB. Last year’s total of 40 sacks was a dropoff of 8 sacks, and that’s after adding Bradley Chubb and Melvin Ingram to the roster.
Let’s take a look at the changes we’ve made. Despite Elandon Roberts having a standout season, Vic Fangio felt he needed an upgrade at LB. The Dolphins brought in LB David Long. Long excelled in pass coverage and was a sure tackler for the Titans. The blockbuster of course was the trade for DB Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey can play a number of different positions, so versatile in a pass crazy NFL. He can play like a LB in obvious passing situations, can play CB on the perimeter most of the time, or play either safety position, with no falloff at any of these spots. We added another sure tackler in the secondary from the Lions in DeShon Elliott. Of course we already have Safeties Jevon Holland and Brandon Jones returning, but Brandon Jones is coming off an ACL tear last season. We also re-signed coverage LB Duke Riley, and most recently, re-signed OLB and ST’s ace Andrew Van Ginkel. Our defensive roster is d-e-e-p. Last but not least, we re-signed one of my favorites, DB Nik Needham who is also coming off a tough injury to come back from, and achilles injury. This defense is absolutely stacked, we have front line talent to match up well against anyone, and then depth that could be better than any other team. Fangio has the tools to make it work here, and you’re not wrong to be expecting big things from this defense.
So what does Vic Fangio do differently than former Miami DC Josh Boyer? For one thing, as I’ve already mentioned. Fangio relies predominantly on his front 7 for pressuring the QB. He blitzes rarely, and sets up his front 7 to succeed. Probably the biggest difference is instead of burdening the secondary with man to man coverage, so often without any help from the safeties due to the constant blitzing from Josh Boyer’s defense, Fangio plays a 2 high safety zone coverage. As I’ve also mentioned, this defense changes, and it can change from a cover 4 to a cover 6 or cover 8. Cover 4, or quarters is when you have 4 defensive backs in zone coverage. Cover 6 could be adding 2 LB’s to the zone, or 2 more defensive backs and cover 8 could increase that to 8 in coverage. Fangio is excellent at disguising which defense he’s using, so it’s never obvious to the opposing offense what we’re doing on defense. Again, we have so much talent on defense, Fangio probably can’t wait to get down to business and implement the players he has available to him. Last year, not one Dolphins defender exceeded 7 sacks. SEVEN! I can’t guarantee we’re going to duplicate what the Eagles did last season, with 4 defenders reaching double digit sacks, with LB Haason Reddick leading the Eagles with 16, the others with 11 each, but I’m willing to put it on paper that we’ll have 2 in double digits, and one of them may be close to Reddick’s 16. I think Jalean Phillips is going to flourish with Fangio, and Chubb will as well.
The depth we added is so key, I’ll explain why. This year, Emmanuel Ogbah should be back healthy. He played hurt for half the season and then went out after game 9. Sieler was fantastic in his stead, but having both allows both players to get more meaningful reps, and be fresher. Adding S DeShon Elliott is not only insurance against whether Brandon Jones can be effective early or at all coming back from ACL surgery, but he’s excellent in coverage in his own right. Nik Needham will play anywhere you ask him to, and I’ve said too many times already, he’s a gamer, always. We added LB Malik Reed from the Steelers who can also rush the passer, and has had 8 sacks playing for Fangio in Denver. We have young LB Channing Tindall, a true sideline to sideline defender who should see more playing time behind Baker and Long. We also have young LB Cameron Goode who we drafted in the 7th RD last season. Bringing back AVG (Andrew Van Ginkel) was a most pleasant surprise. He’s a legit pass rusher, and ST’s playmaker. I know most of you don’t want to hear this name, but if anyone is going to wring the best out of this player, Noah Igbinoghene, it’s Vic Fangio, I’m not going to lie, I won’t be surprised if he’s an early cut either, but I do think he could be a reclamation project for Fangio. It’s nice to know we can line up Wilkins – Davis – Sieler – Chubb – Long – Baker – Phillips – Ramsey – Howard – Holland – Jones, with guys like Ogbah, AVG, Tindall, Riley, Reed, Kohou, Needham, Elliott, McKinley, Crossen, Igbinoghene etc. right behind them. Seriously people, that’s just brimming with high quality starters and depth. Can’t wait!

Nice write, Mike E. I love what we have done with the D since last season ended, top to bottom. And, I was also thinking we have depth, too, so there should be no drop-off in play. Crossing fingers the “injury-bug” does not hit us like last year.
Injuries can really kill a team, but I think this season, our depth should help a lot if the injury bug bites us.

It’s impressive how quickly we’ve retooled the defense. Fangio should be an upgrade over Boyer, we should be more flexible in regards to what we can do with what we have, and the depth we’ve acquired is impressive. If everything comes together, this defense could easily be top 5.

Just a thought that’s been kicking around inside my head for a few days (and somebody may have already wrote a similar observation):
The coaches/FO can’t BOTH see potential in Austin Jackson AND decline his 5th year option.
Actions speak louder than words … I think there is still a chance we sign a veteran RT and trade Jackson for whatever we can to get him off the books (even future late rounders).
The double-speak is likely an attempt to not undermine perceptions of whatever value he may still have.
Jackson hasn’t earned the 5th year option. Not just because of his up and down play but his durability has been an issue.

I just took a look at Daiyen Henley, LB, Washington State. Even on his HIGHLIGHTS he has trouble tackling people, usually involved in a gang tackle. If I can’t get past a highlight reel without seeing major problems, then I’m not even interested. Hard PASS on Henley.

We don’t have to do anything, but right now we have Smythe, Saubert and Conner. None of them really impress me as far as catching the ball. I’d say there’s a reason why Saubert has a high of 15 receptions in 6 years. Also, between Smythe, Saubert and Conner, that’s 30 catches for 276 yards last season. I’d love to a whole lo0t more from that position. With our WR’s, you’d expect a TE to feast because they should be constantly in single coverage. What I like about Washington is I feel like he can step on the field game 1 and be able to block and catch right away.

I really don’t like this Draft for us for when and where we could pick Offensively. Sure, we could take a TE or an O-Lineman @ 51 or 84, but we’d be bypassing significantly better talent on Defense.
IMO, we’d be reaching BIG TIME to draft a TE or O-Line at either 51 or 84… unless somehow a Darnell Washington or an O-Lineman fell to us.
That being the case, there is the option of trading up… but how far, plus that player had better be a hit to warrant trading up for.
I’ve done hundreds of mock drafts this season, and the quality left on Offense when we select @ 51 (TE and O-Line) truly falls off a cliff.
As some of y’all may have noticed, I’ve been posting a lot of Defensive options for us @ 53… and there are some really good players that will likely be available to us @ 53.

My biggest concern, and it has been my biggest criticism of the zone D for a while, is the soft spots that good WR’s and QB’s can easily find at the hand-off points (where zones intersect) Brady used to kill ISLB / MLB’s by having an either or route right at them. If the LB leaned right, he would throw left and visa versa. It was an automatic first down every time. We were never able to stop it. Unless we got penetration up the middle or hands in the passing lanes.

If the pass rush is better, and our defenders are positioned properly, those passes could be defended. Ilike that we have LB’s that can cover on the field on every down, that should make a huge difference. That was was one of Roberts’ weakest areas.
Fangio mixes up coverages and disguises them well. He’ll show one look and then pre-snap he’ll switch it up. You thought it was Cover 2 then he flips it to man and vice versa. That’s what he’s known for.

Adebawore won’t be able to replace Jenkins as a NT, but he can fill a DT role… and so much more.
At the moment, we have no one who has a resume behind Davis. We have Josiah Bronson who had a cup of coffee with the Niners and Saints. I’d gather we’ll sign another NT. As you know, I’m not a huge fan of Davis, hopefully next year, we can upgrade

We’ve had so many problems in recent years establishing a pass-rush from our 4-man front that Boyer had to resort to 0-man.
If we draft Adetomiwa Adebawore, the problem is solved. THEN just imagine a blitz on top of that!!! We’d be an instant top-5 Defense (if not #1 under Vic Fangio), and that alone makes us a contender to go DEEP into the playoffs.
What about Phillips and Chubb?

Sieler isn’t really an edge rusher. He’s more of an inside the tackles run defender and he’ll get some push the pocket pass rush but that lineup would not be the best we have.

I think you need to remove Sieler for another corner. Phillips and Chubb are going to be the edge guys standing up.
There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s all a matter of preference against the team we’re playing that week.
So if ya want to remove Sieler for another CB, give me Darth Kader or Nik Needham as that CB. But again, it depends on who we’re playing against.
This is a 4-2-5 nickel against 11 personnel. You had a 4-3 defensive formation. Where is Phillips as a spy and who’s covering the slot receiver inside Chase?
OH! I didn’t even recognize that this was a screen shot against the Bengals! I was merely looking at the Defense and only the Defense, figuring who would play where in a general/generic sense.
SO, like I said(!), it’s all contingent upon the adversary.
Yeah, when you’re playing against Chase, Higgins, and Boyd… OBVIOUSLY you’d have 3 (or more) CBs out there.

What’s cool about the addition of Ramsey is he can play a rover role. If our depth with Kohou, Needham and Williams is where it needs to be, we can use Ramsey in a lot of different roles. As a CB he can play man or zone, you can use him to blitz and you can disguise him as a Shallow Safety/LB. He’s the type of player where the QB has to look around for where Ramsey is and what he thinks he might do. He’s a top level defender that draws that type of attention.
Our D-Line — over the last 3 years — couldn’t pop a pimple as it pertains to a classic pass-rush. It MUST get better.
The personnel I see is:
Edge Chubb
DT Wilkins
DT Ogbah
Edge Phillips
LB Baker
LB Long
CB Ramsey, Howard and Needham/Kohou could play any of the roles.
S Holland and Jones the same but Holland is the better deep safety. That’s how we can mix it up not just in scheme but personnel. I think there will be times when Jones comes off the field and we add another corner with Ramsey as a rover.
Both Chubb and Phillips can play on either side and the same with Wilkins and Ogbah. They can all play the run. Not only do we challenge the OL with different matchups with the same 4, we can do that at LB and in the secondary too. You play with your best personnel but also move them around to keep things uncomfortable.
If we draft Adetomiwa Adebawore, “away go your problems, down the drain!”

Players like Davis and Sieler will get their snaps in situations. Early in the game teams usually want to establish a solid running game. Then you have short yardage, goal line or trying to run out of the end zone when pinned inside the 5. All sorts of situations for specific personnel. We’ve got talent for different situations.
Malik Reed and AVG are solid backup edge guys when Phillips and Chubb need a breather or have a stinger. Ogbah can also be that at times with Sieler in the lineup. Lots of combinations. Depth is cool. 🙂

Really? Wow. I know Schmitz is seen as the best C and a nice prospect, but I had no clue he might be the first OL taken. That seems a bit much….but it is kind of a weak OL draft. Oh well, so much for my delusions. Lol

A friend of mine told me that he heard some original vinyl records – Led Zeppelin for instance on the Atlantic label are worth up to $25,000. I have a version of all of them somewhere. Not sure if they’re in the condition that would be worth that kind of money because they were from my teenage years and I played them a lot and I’m sure there are some scratches and skips. LOL

Didn’t realize how expensive vinyl has become
Liked all the suggestions but the last couple of day but today I mixed it up
Yesterday I went to a new store around 30 rock in Manhattan – somewhat overpriced and sort of newish , not a great used selection
I bought a white stripes greatest hits album, mudhoney (I love them from the 90s) and a fugazi album
Then today o went to two stores in Brooklyn and they had much better used stuff
I got Radiohead, Nina Simone, Leadbelly, Peter Tosh, Miles Davis, Killing Joke & Pearl Jam
Some of those albums were like $5 or $6
So I bargain shopped

I admit, I don’t always have such a variety in my day to day listening but this is supposed to be a collection of things I can rely on to enjoy
So some of the stuff I listen to at home relaxing or while cooking is a little different than what I listen to on the treadmill
I was listening to the Lead Belly album earlier today and it’s amazing

Jeff and his brothers are metal AF but they knew the guys from Prop when they needed a Bass player they would have taken either brother. This worked out well and you can see the band is now working with a label and the production value is way better than anything they’ve done before. They played in the Keys last weekend. Three nights three different events. So it’s exciting to see them or specifically my nephew getting some notoriety it’s pretty cool.
Not sure exactly what they’re working on with the studio but if any vinyl comes out of it you’ll get one.
Most musicians even those into really heavy stuff also like other styles of music. Steve Harris the bassist for Iron Maiden was really into early Genesis.

Unless Darnell Washington falls to us @ 51, I’m currently looking at either Strange or Camren McDonald from FSU to be our drafted TE.

I took a look at Darius Rush, CB, South Carolina, yesterday (highlights only), and I think he could be a sleeper pick for us: 6’2″, 198, with a 79 5/8″ wingspan? Oh… and a 4.36 40-time?
He’s currently projected to be a 3rd-4th round draft pick. I must delve into his tape to see why he could slip to day 3.

M13, what do you think if we traded down?
I was looking at the common trade value chart so if we traded to the end of the 2nd round (60-63), a 3rd would be the value. We might have to give up a 2024 7th. So now it’s one extra pick and basically three 3rds. It comes down to how Grier and Co. view the draft after 50. This is not a top heavy amazing prospect type of draft. A good amount of good prospects though.
I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if we traded down to get more picks. Not sure I would recommend as much in an overall weak Draft, but that’s just me.
Me? I’d be more prone to trade up to nail a solid prospect this year.
Tim, I can’t tell you how pissed off I am at Steve Ross for setting us back a 1st rounder this year… and a 3rd rounder next year.
That’s why you trade down. The top is not elite so why act like it is.
I have not heard of one prospect you can’t pass on. We all know the QBs always get pushed to the top. But I don’t see franchise QB locks in this draft and it always starts there.
This draft might be a trade down draft with quantity over questionable quality. We don’t have a say in the 1st round because of the doofus Ross. It sucks for sure. But it’s done.
Trading down might also be a salary cap approach in what most say is a mediocre draft. Lots of good prospects, it lacks in elite talent.

See, that’s exactly why I’d be willing to trade UP… in order to nab somebody who is actually worth it, being the falloff @ around 51 is truly unsettling but for a few players who may slip to us.

When looking at the draft with LB in mind I don’t see it. Baker, Long, Riley and Tindall as off-ball LBs. Chubb, Phillips, Reed, AVG and Goode at OLB/Edge.
You think Fangio had some say with the additions on defense? Add Ramsey to most of the secondary last year coming back. 🙂
In years past, I was always hated trading up, but I get it. The trade ups for Eich and Hunter Long did not go so well. With only 4 picks this year and only 5 next year, I am fearful they will do it for the wrong player again and waste a pick we don’t havve to spare.
There a just a couple of players I think who would be worth it.
I would be more for a trade down as we have a ton of roster spots to fill. As it stands, we will probably be signing 15 or more UDFA’s to fill out the roster along with a couple more vets after June 1 when the Jones money clears. Trading down 10 spots gains you another 3rd, you will get a higher quality prospect in the 3rd than an UDFA and not really lose much value between 51 and 61.
Your last sentence is what I see learning about this draft. Lots of solid prospects but lacking in special.

I think Musgrave is like a Gesicki clone. Though he is slightly better after the catch (doesn’t run like a giraffe). He has not lined up in line much and considered a “get in the way blocker” and not a mauler. Maybe he has it in him to improve in that area more so than Gesicki.
