Dolphins roster nearly complete – Do we draft for this season or beyond?

As Naples was able to convey so clearly, this roster is basically set. There are only a couple of spots on the roster in which anyone drafted in this 2023 NFL Draft can make even the slightest impact on this season, and beyond. With that in mind, let’s once again look at those spots and the players that could have a chance to make that impact. To me, Tight End is the easiest. We have two blocking TE’s, Durham Smythe and Eric Saubert, and then we have a tweener, Tanner Conner, who was a former college WR converted to a TE. Realistically though, Conner is at best what we hoped former Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki, a dangerous receiver. Neither Smythe or Saubert has proven that they can be reliable receivers, but Conner has elite speed for the position (4.37 40) and hops as well with a nearly 40″ vertical. I’ve already illustrated that neither TE is a true receiving threat between Smythe and Saubert, they have a total of 121 receptions, 88 for Smythe over 5 seasons, and 33 over 6 seasons for Saubert, 3 TD’s for Smythe, 2 for Saubert. Those career totals don’t add up to one season for Niners TE George Kittle, who HC Mike McDaniel had the services of in SF as the Offensive Coordinator.

This brings us to Darnell Washington, who already has established that he’s a solid in-line blocking TE, with the size to get bigger, and he’s already shredded. His pass catching is more on potential than actual production, or he’d likely be the first TE off the board. Taking into account that TE is probably one spot where someone could potentially slide into early on, I wouldn’t be upset if we traded up to get him, and it looks that might be a necessity to guarantee he’s on our roster. If your roster is already mostly set, and you only have 4 picks, none of them on day one, and two of them on day 3, I see nothing wrong with acquiring one impact player in exchange for one of our 3 other picks. I think Washington has the size and speed to become a good receiver, and the fact that he could line up now and block on the line and downfield just as easily makes him an easy choice.

Another position where I think a player could help us right away is RB. Let’s face it, we have a RB room that screams “Running Back by Committee!!” There’s not one feature back on our roster, and one half of our RB room is signed through ’24, the other half on year contracts. Adding a versatile RB like Jamhyr Gibbs would be an easy pick. Gibbs increased his carries and receptions each year, and was a big part of the Alabama offense. He has a similar skillset to Mostert, Ahmed and Gaskin, in that he’s a very good receiver out of the backfield, can run either between the tackles, and has the speed to break a big run at any time with 4.36 speed. Mostert had career highs in carries (181) and yards (891) in his 8 year career. Wilson also had career highs last season, splitting the season between the Niners and Dolphins, finishing with 176 carries and 860 yards. None of our backs have played an entire season as a lead back getting the lions share of carries. Adding some young talent to the pool makes sense. Improve the depth, and very likely, one of either Ahmed or Gaskin would be either released or traded.

To me, it sure seems like the Dolphins staff is committed to developing OG Liam Eichenberg. If it were up to Ken, we’d have already moved on from Eich, but even Ken knows we invested an early 2nd RD pick, in order to do so we traded up from #50 and traded an additional 2022 3rd pick to get to #42 to take the Notre Dame OL. It’s sensible to get something back on your investment if you truly see the potential there. He absolutely has not realized that potential as of yet, and RT Austin Jackson is certainly on his last chance, being 2024 would be the fifth year option for Jackson, a $14M + decision, in which Jackson would need a standout year to have the Dolphins pick up that 5th year option. To think the Dolphins may spend another 2nd RD pick on an OL is not folly. I don’t think anyone here would be disappointed if we went that direction. Once again, there are a couple of interior OL that could give Eich a run for his money in this draft. TCU OG Steve Avila is a massive lineman, 6’3.5, 332 lbs., who is very light on his feet for such a big guy. He’s also a team captain, leader of men, and could potentially be a day one starter. Many here feel we need to upgrade the O-line, Avila could remedy that. Another OL I’ve mentioned is OL John Michael Schmitz. He is widely considered to be the top interior lineman, specifically OC prospect. I know some people get bent out of shape when you say we could move C Connor Williams to OG, (where he played 4 seasons for the Dallas Cowboys) and have Schmitz at C. Williams is a very solid player who played every-single-snap last season at C. He struggled some with high snaps, but otherwise it was hard to criticize his play. Schmitz is a true C that could step in day one, and moving Connor Williams to LG gives us a strong left side, with Armstead at LT and Williams at LG.

There’s always different ways to look at things, and we may just end up being patient, see who falls to our spot at each draft pick, and end up with 4 players, or we might get aggressive and package a pick or two to get a player. I’d prefer the latter, as I feel if we’re going to draft players in the 2nd RD and 3rd RD, these players better be roster worthy and at least in my estimation, should have some impact, even in their rookie season. Keep in mind we drafted LB Channing Tindall last season who made zero impact last season, but we’ve also seen Grier trade up for players he wants as he did with OG Liam Eichenberg. Whatever they do, I just hope these players we draft make our team better not only in the future, but this year as well.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

    Here’s what I’ve got this evening…

GRANTED a gem doesn’t fall in our laps in either the 2nd or 3rd rounds (it’s possible!), and granted we don’t move up or down the board (again, it’s possible!), I believe we’re targeting an O-Lineman and TE with our first two selections (I know, no shit Sherlock, right? LOL).

R2P20 (51): TE (Luke Musgrave or Darnell Washington?)
R3P21 (84): OL (Braeden Daniels or Blake Freeland?)
    or
    R2P20 (51): OL (Matthew Bergeron?)
    R3P21 (84): TE (Brenton Strange?)

This is the way I see it right now. We all know the names of those who could be too good to pass up if they fall to us at either pick.

SO GLAD to see Brayden Point back on the ice!
SO SAD that Toronto pulled their goalie and scored the tying goal with one minute to go!!! – – But that’s Playoff hockey!!
    ———————-
DON’T BE SURPRISED if THIS game becomes one of the greatest Stanley Cup Playoff games of this decade! BOTH TEAMS are amped to the max and ready to rumble!!

I’M THINKING the home ice advantage gives the Lightning a slight edge.
    GOOO BOLTS!!

  3. mf13ss says:

    Rockphin,

GOOD CALL on Jake Moody, K, Michigan. I’m hearing there’s a chance he could go undrafted, but we would be wise to draft him with our 7th round pick… and for ALL the reasons you stated earlier.

  4. naplesfan2010 says:

I rewatched that Chris Grier and Marvin I forget his last name press conference, and I rehashed everything else they’ve said and done this offseaseon, and I really think they are set at OL, except maybe signing a vet FA such as Shell… if Armstead gets dinged.

because there is no draftee who will still be there at 51 who they will want to start in front of Jackson or Eich, at least this one last time. They’ve invested a lot in those guys. Those guys are young, large, and Eich is a mauler and Jackson has elite feet.

    And they signed Feeney.
Grier said they expect Jackson to start. He didn’t mention Eich.

While I know about smoke screens, I think Pick 51 is already such an impossible to control pick number that there’s no need or value in trying to smoke screen anyone about that pick until at least the 40s.

At that point they might see a Washington or a Gibbs or even a Sanders or that LB Campbell and say ‘that’s our guy and he’s still there, but he’s not going to make it past ____ at pick 43 or 46 or whatever,’ and they will know with their intel who it is who will steal him before he falls all the way to 51.

So at that point we might try to trade up a handful of spots and get that guy.

But regardless of that scenario, I think the pick at 51 is Luke Musgrave or Jahmyr Gibbs, or less likely, Drew Sanders or maybe Jack Campbell. NOT an OL. And then at 84 TE Strange or Tucker if they didn’t take a TE at 51. Or Abanikanda or Spears if the 51 pick was a TE.

Maybe that’s just what I think is best, not what the FO thinks.

Because we absolutely need a 4th TE that we can trust on the field for meaningful minutes. And this draft is deep at TE and RB.

And we absolutely need some fresh legs at RB. Someone who can catch the ball and get YAC and also be another RB who can take it to the house. Only Mostert has that kind of speed. And he’s old and fragile.

Of course, I am often wrong, but I just think we can survive with the OT we have, but we only have 3 TE signed and that’s not a full room. And all of our RBs were resigned FAs who are still on short contracts.

Grier said something like, you might look at a particular position group and think we don’t need anybody at that spot, but a lot of these guys are on one-year deals… He said it was like our LB room last year. Notice, they upgraded big time at OLB and ILB.

  5. mf13ss says:

Rumors (don’t trust it) are that the Eagles are about to land Derrick Henry. Imagine Henry, Penny, and Jalen Hurts all running the ball in Philly behind their elite O-Line? WOAH!

  6. randydolfan1947 says:

AFTER dominating most of the overtime period, Tampa Bay gives up the winning goal! VERY tough loss for the Lightning!

  7. steveccnv says:

Lol, I guess it’s not aging well

Bud Light marketing VP Alissa Heinerscheid, who said the brand was “fratty” and “out of touch,” and devised the much-criticized Dylan Mulvaney partnership, is taking a leave of absence.

    • Rockphin says:

LOL sorry I crushed your sales and alienated your entire frat boy/redneck customer base. I think I’ll take some vacation time now.

I find it hilarious that the entire subculture that cries loudest about cancel culture is now canceling their own beer!!! Blindly following along and not seeing the hypocrisy.

      • steveccnv says:

You have to go to a gun fight with a gun

I find it hilarious, that one side goes low, then cries, when the other side starts to go low, as if that side has to live by a standard, while the other can do whatever

  8. Rockphin says:

I mean I guess the millions of redneck bud light drinkers were really just Kevin Harvick fans and didn’t really like the taste of the beer. 🤪

  9. bailbondmike says:

Not a Bud light drinker but guess I fit that NASCAR loving country boy demographic. I don’t buy it but will drink the shit out of it if it is offered to me for free.

I do think it was a really stupid move by them and would have thought the same for any beer company that tried it.

    • herdfan says:

I agree. I’ve had bud light in my life, probably will again if I’m at some event and that’s what is available. Not getting caught up in the drama. I’m normally a wine or vodka drinker. This thing I’m at now, beer choices are Mich and Mich ultra, Corona, Stella. As long as it fits in my brumate. I’m good.

  10. bailbondmike says:

Doug Farrar (Touchdown Wire) has the Dolphins selecting Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker with pick No. 51 and South Dakota State tight end Tucker Kraft with pick No. 84.

Who knows at this point. I don’t see it but like Hendon Hooker’s potential as an all-round QB, throwing and running. Has a strong arm and accurate. There are other TE options I like better than Kraft at #84.

  11. bailbondmike says:

Quiet NFL news day for draft week starting. Every writer saving their last “final mock draft” for later this week. lol

I was hoping to hear breaking news this morning that the Dolphins traded Cedric Wilson to the Lions for one of their 5th round picks.

  12. naplesfan2010 says:

Grier says the only position they absolutely won’t draft is QB.

    2 things.
    1) makes sense to me … why sign White if they’re going to draft a QB?
    2) watch out if you’re a PK or RB

  13. naplesfan2010 says:

The only light beer I can stand is Mich Ultra.
It’s pretty tasty after a sweaty round of golf.

I prefer a stout, like Guinness.

  14. Krishna says:

    Guinness draft is first choice…lol.

And for dessert, Irish Car Bombs…oh my.

  15. bailbondmike says:

They have a “Gallery Night” here in downtown Pensacola. They close off one of the main streets have live music and people set up booths to sell their artwork, crafts, etc. It’s a good time. They had a throwback night and the only beers they sold were PBR’s and Miller Highlife.

I haven’t drunk it since, but that ice cold Miller Highlife was tasty. Even after #3 and 4. Maybe I was just thirty for an ice cold beer and it wouldn’t have mattered what beer it was. lol

  16. bailbondmike says:

You New Yorker’s, do they still make Brooklyn Lager? I remember have some back in the 90’s and thought it was pretty good.

  17. Watching former NFL drafts on the NFLN. Lots of wild stuff went on over the years.

  18. naplesfan2010 says:

I drank gallons of Pabst Blue Ribbon in college.
    Not sure why.

  19. manitobafinfan says:

    I’m a simple man…
Bud lite , cans , draft or aluminim bottle only (no glass bottles) is my second choice after Miller Lite .. also cans or draft .. mentioned it before but I find beer from a brown bottle just doesn’t taste good ..

Don’t like the taste of NON Lite Bud at all

  20. bailbondmike says:

I bet someone signs him after the XFL season is over. Some guys just need more game experience to get there.

“AJ McCarron was 28-of-35 passing in the BattleHawks’ 53-28 win over the Orlando Guardians with 420 passing yards and six touchdown passes. His six touchdown passes put him in the upper echelon of XFL history. He has 24 touchdown passes this season, setting the record for most in a single season in the league. He broke Tommy Maddox’s record set in 2001 for the LA Xtreme.”

He said he could have signed with an NFL team to compete for a backup roll and made much more money but wanted his son to be able to watch him play in games so he chose to join the XFL.

  21. bailbondmike says:

The New York Jets and Green Bay Packers have reportedly opened talks again for a trade involving four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Despite Rodgers saying that his intentions are to play for the Jets this season, a trade has not been finalized between both teams to make that happen.

However, NFL Network reported Sunday that talks are picking up again and both sides are hoping a deal can get done by the end of this week.

  22. Mike E. says:

I don’t know if this tribute band travels around the states, but last night we saw Almost Queen at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank. The venue is awesome for a concert, the seats were great, the sound was fantastic, and the band was awesome. The guy that “plays” Freddie Mercury just has a tireless, powerful amazing voice. The drummer was insane, his drum solo was the best one I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen groups that supposedly had the best drummers, like Rush, The Who etc., although I never saw Keith Moon because he was dead. Another tribute band called Philadelphia Freedom opened, and they were pretty darn good too.

  23. So I did a mock draft. I went BPA 2 and 3 then targeted OL at 6 and 7. Developmental players who could compete as depth.

    51: R2 P20 RB Jahmyr Gibbs – Alabama
    84: R3 P21 LB Jack Campbell – Iowa
    178: R6 P1 G Asim Richards – North Carolina
    238: R7 P21 OT Jake Witt – Northern Michigan

  24. bailbondmike says:

Any of you northeasterner’s going to SatanCon 2023 in Boston this week?

It is being described as “the largest satanic gathering in history.”

    • CavalierKong says:

Lol, panning is way too much work…not that I’ve ever done it, but I’ve seen videos of the technique.

  25. I’m looking forward to watching us draft no prospects any of us have been talking about. LOL

    • Ken says:

      As ushge

    • bailbondmike says:

LOL, so true! I have tried to stick to selecting guys they seemed to like and do private visits/workouts with, but mainly on my later round picks. Like TE Strange and DT Carl Brooks. Though Strange won’t last until the 6th now as was projected a couple months ago. I hear a lot of teams like him.

I will be ready at my computer to look up and figure out who the hell these guys are they drafted come Saturday and Sunday. lol

  26. naplesfan2010 says:

    Lol bbm
    So true
I never stooped so low as to drink Ripple or Boones Farm wine though.

I drank PBR in 1970 and then discovered Scotch. Drank Chivas for a year then switched to Jack Daniels.

  27. naplesfan2010 says:

Edge Beal in the 6th would be good.

  28. bailbondmike says:

I keep thinking that if RB Gibbs doesn’t fall to us, I think we might see a late round speedster RB like Keaton Mitchell from ECU. I’ll post him again. His size has him gong late. Only knock is pass pro and always looking for the homerun and not just taking what is there.

    • bailbondmike says:

No college RB on any level of college football had more big plays then Keaton Mitchell. He had 54 runs of 10 or more yards last season on 201 carries. So 1 out of every 4 rushes was for 10 or more yards. Not to mention his YAC on his receptions. He also never fumbled in college.

  29. Brenton Strange is a prospect I think we’d like to add. TE/H-back. He seems like a good fit. Won’t be surprised if we take him at #84.

  30. mf13ss says:

    BB Mike,

FWIW, PFF has Keaton Mitchell going in the 4th round. Man, I really wouldn’t mind trading down if our guys are already off the board in order to get somebody like Mitchell.

H-Back just means you lineup off the LOS between the guard and tackle on the strong side as a blocker inside or out, chip or go into a route. Smythe did that. Ingold did that. It’s part of the offense. Strange fits that from what I’ve seen but he can also play TE.
    ———-
Tim, it’s more like Brenton Strange plays in-line TE, but maybe he can play H-Back.
    TIFI 😉

  32. bailbondmike says:

The one thing I like about this draft is not being in desperation for any position. Though TE is an obvious target.

I like it! However, I don’t see Jack Campbell lasting to the 3rd round… JMO

  34. mf13ss says:

Look, I’ve got no insider trading help like politicians have. However, Chris Grier likes his DBs. Twice again, do NOT sleep on Darius Rush, CB, South Carolina, if he’s the BPA on the board @ 84.

You heard it from me first, your resident DB enthusiast.

  35. As far as TE goes I get it. But Smythe has been a high snap count guy since he’s been here and we keep re-signing him with different regimes. He’s our starting TE. Saubert is his backup. Conner is a tweener receiver so we’ll see. A prospect like Strange seems like a good fit.

  36. Wyoming85 says:

I don’t think Mazi or Matthew last to these picks

    51.Mazi Smith DT Michigan

Kong – I decided to purchase an Amazon Firestick and try YouTube TV using the Firestick and it solved the blurry, choppy picture issue. It actually helped with Amazon as well. I’ll now be purchasing YouTube TV as my main provider, and then of course add the Sunday Ticket, as well as some other add ons and drop DirecTV. My TV has an amazing picture, but It’s a little older, and I guess the apps installed on the TV, or downloaded, have limited memory. The picture on YouTube TV is no better than DirecTV’s picture. Same for Amazon

    • CavalierKong says:

Awesome! Glad you solved it without too much headache. If you’re using the firestick wirelessly and find you have issues with connectivity sometimes, you can also wire it into your network. That is what I ended up doing, mostly because my router is on the other side of the house.

  39. Rockphin says:

Dear Lord Mike Florio is an asshole!

Dick face! Tom Brady is NOT talking about Tua’s job. It is YOU and ONLY YOU that keeps vomiting this garbage over and over.

“Tua Tagovailoa should tell Mike Florio to SHUT THE FUCK UP AND RETIRE FROM THE INTERNET”

    • bailbondmike says:

In the end, the guy says Mauch can play all 5 positions on the OL.

    • Krishna says:

Great story, but FCS, I think….will he start?

    • bailbondmike says:

The 6-foot-5, 302-pound Mauch ran an unofficial best time of 5.09 seconds in the 40-yard dash, which was televised on the NFL Network.

“He’s legitimately a five-position guy,” said draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah on the NFL Network broadcast. “He can play all five (offensive line) positions.”

“He’s got a little nasty to him as well,” Jeremiah added.

Mauch’s testing numbers gave him a high Relative Athletic Score (RAS) at guard and center if he gets moved to those positions in the NFL. Mauch scored a 9.43 at guard and 9.51 at center. RAS grades players’ measurements and test scores on a 0-to-10 scale in comparison to players at the same position group.

After he completed the bench press those numbers improved with a 9.02 RAS at offensive tackle, a 9.68 RAS at guard and a 9.72 RAS at center. Mauch did 29 reps on the bench press.

  42. The Flying Pig says:

They pretty much h]gave up the 2024 1st (unless Rogers doesn’t play) and swapped picks

  43. CavalierKong says:

Jets have to feel pretty good about what they gave up.

  44. mf13ss says:

I think it was a pretty good deal, just wish the stej had given up more.

  45. stangerx says:

Aaron Rodgers to the Yets. Those games just got a lot more interesting. Their QB play was our major plus last season. Same time they gave up the top of their draft for 0ne-two years of him.

    • stangerx says:

Oops — missed the Jets got the first rounder back. Seems more of a cap soak/ we don’t want him anymore move.

  46. Ken says:

    • stangerx says:

“0ne-two years of him” — Seems RG3 read my post. 🙂

Packers still didn’t get that much though. If he’s right about how good the Jets are then next year’s pick will be towards the bottom of the round.

  47. naplesfan2010 says:

I think it favors the jets mainly because they had worse than nobody at QB.

Rodgers doesn’t need to play long term there.

That franchise is starved for playoff success.

If he can bring them to a better level, it’ll help that HC get time to build a program.

They’ll sell a ton of tickets, too.

YOUNG STANGER, great to see your words of wisdom back on the board!
Speaking of the Rays, Tampa Bay has the best record in baseball right now. They are playing the defending World Series champions, the Houston Astros at The Trop right now (leading 8-3 in the 8th inning). But only about 10,000 souls showed up to see it.

    The REASON??

TAMPA BAY’S FAVORITE FRANCHISE, the Tampa Bay Lightning, are home playing the Maple Leafs across the Bay back in Tampa. The Bolts lead Toronto 4-1 after two periods and seem destined to tie this series at 2 games apiece.

Tampa Bay has their usual sell-out (over 19,000 attendance with an average ticket price of at least TRIPLE what the fans at the Trop are paying). They could sell over 50,000 tickets to this game if they had enough room!! Once football season is over, Tampa Bay is A HOCKEY TOWN, THROUGH AND THROUGH! It will be extremely interesting to see if Tampa Bay can extend the Leaf’s playoff miseries for yet another season!! Toronto has NOT won a playoff series since 2004, despite leading several of those series over the last 19 seasons!! And, of course, they haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 1967, the longest such drought in NHL history!!

OFF to bed before tonight’s game is over. My physical therapy today was the most rigorous one I’ve ever experienced ..REALLY need my beauty rest!

    The Old Dolfan is OUT!
