NFL Draft is Thursday – Dolphins need to find players to take them to the top

Now that A-aron is coming to the Jets, there’s no reason to pick up players that won’t make an immediate impact for this team. We have a window to win, and we need to make sure whatever players we add in this draft can help our team right now. This could be a TE, and you all know which TE I want, but in case you don’t, it’s Georgia TE Darnell Washington. I think this kid is ready to play right now, he can block, and he’s an underrated receiver. A RB like Jahmyr Gibbs from Alabama could be an electric player who could see some immediate playing time and spark this offense. We could also look to solidify the O-line, because each and every one of us know that we need a healthy Tua to win. We can’t have a leaky O-line, and there are a couple of question marks on our line at the moment. To be fair, most NFL teams have the same situation, but we have one excellent LT with a a very real injury history, Terron Armstead. Armstead somehow played 13 games last season, but he was questionable every single week with injuries. Our LG might have the confidence of the FO and the coaches, but Liam Eichenberg does not have the full confidence of the Dolphins fanbase. The same goes for RT Austin Jackson, 2020 1st RD pick, who will be protecting Tua’s blind side. There’s a couple of OT’s that may be around our first pick, North Dakota State’s Cody Mauch and Ohio State’s Dawand Jones. If we’re looking to upgrade the interior line, there’s Minnesota’s John Michael Schmidt and TCU’s Steve Avila.

It seems obvious to me that we are playing within a 2 year window. Our QB is relatively inexpensive this year and next, our most dynamic player, WR Tyreek Hill has declared he will stop playing in 2025, and our roster is as set as it’s going to be, many players on short deals. Our time is now, and with Aaron Rodgers playing QB for the NY Jets, most likely for 2 years, their window matches our window. I think our defensive roster at the moment is the best, most talented defensive roster we’ve had in decades. Our defense is ready. Add in the fact that we have DC Vic Fangio calling the shots for our defense now, I feel like we could be special. We brought back the entire RB room from last year, not because they were great, they were effective, but not great. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if we looked to a young RB to spark this group. We know who we have at TE, and Tim can continue to stroke Durham Smythe, Eric Saubert and Tanner Conner, but realistically, this is a weak TE group. Smythe is a decent blocker, meh as a receiver. Saubert seems like he’s a blocking TE who is a blocking TE. Who knows what Conner can be, we haven’t taken off the wrapping paper yet. We may have to move up to get the RB, TE, or OL we want, but that shouldn’t stop us. Just get better, our roster is set as it’s going to be, whomever we add needs to be worthy!

Next year we can add some more depth players, but with limited picks in this draft, we need quality, not quantity. Our time is NOW! What I’m saying is I don’t want to see us trading back and picking up 2 more picks so we can draft guys who will struggle to make the roster, let alone see the field. That’s not where we’re at. I’m sure Chris Grier is well aware of this, so I wouldn’t bet on that happening. Usually I’m pumped up about the draft, but this one is not the same, armed with only a 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th RD picks. We’ve been trading away picks to get the players we wanted, so now we have to use the picks to do the same. I know we all have different ideas of what the right picks should be, Hulk may get angry if our first pick is a RB and not an OL. He may be right, but it sure does seem as if the coaching staff feels that Eich and Jackson are the guys going forward. We’ll see in a couple of days. Doubt we’ll be picking in RD 1, Stephen Ross made sure of that. I wouldn’t mind if we picked early in RD 2, earlier than #51, our current first pick.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Thank you, Mike E. I think and most already know, I completely agree with you on this….lol.

Excellent article Mike E. I’m trying to feel good about us having a great roster not bad about having so few picks.

  4. Dean Chance's avatar Dean Chance says:

My thoughts too. Until the Lions got stung by those players getting suspended they were offering us pick 18 for next years first rounder. Not sure it’ll still be on offer. If it was there’s a possibility Bijan Robinson is still around. I would take him, if not Darnell Washington would do. We could try and make him a Tackle if he put on weight.
Food for thought but probably not going to happen.

  5. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Nice article MikeE

My greatest desire is that we do not throw away any of next year‘s pics to move up this season. I am steadfastly against throwing away future picks to move up because of any “window”. There’s no better way to guarantee the window closes than to operate this way.

You guys don’t want to hear this, but this is not a Super Bowl winning team. If he trades away next year’s pics then look for a rebuild in two years.

  6. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Someone missing from this list. I can’t believe he still doesn’t get any respect.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

They have a middling often injured running back on the list but not the statistically best quarterback in the league last year. Curious 🤨

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s because Tua plays with Hill and Waddle.

When Mahomes throws to garbage skill players like Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, that is pure QB talent. When a guy like Tua throws to Hill and Waddle, Tua should be thanking his lucky stars those receivers are there to bail him out. 🤡

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Trying to find a trade up partner where we could include Cedric Wilson. Only WR needy teams I see so far are:

Detroit – They only have picks #48 and #55 in the 2nd round. Moving up 3 spots isn’t worth it, IMO. They do have a desperate need at WR though.

Green Bay – Could be a huge possibility. They only have 5 WR’s currently on their roster and the top 2 were rookies last year, Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs). They have a desperate need at WR. They have picks #42 and #45. Moving up 9 spots to #42 could put us in a better window to land an impact player. Though, I am not sure #51 and Cedric Wilson would be enough to move up to #42.

Houston – Could use some help at WR. They have just a bunch of young WR’s after Robert Woods, but it would cost much more to move up to #33. What are we willing to give up?

Tennessee – They need depth at WR. They drafted Treylon Burks last year and have Westbrook. Their WR room is really “meh”. They have pick #41.

Carolina – They are another possibility. They have decent WR’s after Adam Theilen, but they are also a bunch of guys who just have never made the jump yet in DJ Chark, Laviska Shenault, Terrace Marshall, Preston Williams and Shi Smith. They do have pick #39 which would put us in a great window, but they also have need at LB.

Realistically, I could see a move up to #42 with the Packers the most as they still have pick #45, but only have 12.6 mil in cap space (top 51) even after the Rodgers trade. Titans would be the next.

      —————
Not sure if it will still be on the table. They have secondary needs and now WR.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“What are we willing to give up?“

      NOTHING!!! 🤬

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The Jets really got a deal. Rodgers will only cost them 15.7 million against their cap this year and a 32 million cap hit in 2024.

“the Packers will pick up Rodgers’ guaranteed option bonus of $58.3 million, converting it into a signing bonus, creating $43.7 million in cap space and making his 2023 cap hit just $15.7 million (for the Jets).”

Still, the Jets got work to do as they are currently 6.2 million over their cap (top 51).

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Dalton Miller’s (PFN) post A-Rod trade mock draft:

    51) Miami Dolphins: Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia
The Kyle Shanahan tree needs its tight ends to block. There is a reason why Durham Smythe was getting snaps over Mike Gesicki a season ago. There’s a reason that despite once having nearly a 1,400-yard season, George Kittle is often relegated to being a sixth offensive lineman.

In other words, there are absolutely zero fits in the 2023 NFL Draft that make more sense than Darnell Washington becoming a Miami Dolphin. It would be a mistake for the NFL to allow it, but it’s hard to ignore that the behemoth TE only had 45 career receptions in college.

It may take some time to see production from him as a pass catcher, but he will provide immediate and integral value as a blocker early on. After all, Miami only throws it to two guys anyway.

    84) Miami Dolphins: Jordan Battle, S, Alabama
Jordan Battle is probably never going to be a Pro Bowl-caliber player. But Battle is probably never going to play an NFL down at anything less than a starter level, either. He’s simply a good football player.

Interesting take on #84 but we have 5 safeties on the roster and I think they all make the team to include PS. I could see OL, RB, CB or LB at #84.

  10. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t have a huge interest in Thursday night (round 1) other than to see who our division rivals pick and to see who is available we could have picked at #21 had we not forfeited that pick.

Just to make myself mad. lol

  11. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I see our window as being at least 3 years and .aybe more, depending on where the cap goes.

Tyreek is not retiring in 2025, he said after that season, which matches his 2026 cap hit of 56m and only 11m in dead money

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

As for a TE, we should just find a semi-athletic OT and use him at TE

If you want a 6th OL in the game use one, he could play a majority of the running type of plays on early downs, when Smythe isn’t in, and if he’s more effective than Smythe, give him more snaps

    It’s not rocket science

  13. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m with Rock, hell no to trading up. I just tried trading up to #42 with GB. Tried about 20 times and ended up having to trade:
    #51, #84, #238, Cedric Wilson and Iggy
    To get:
    #42 and #116

I traded to early and Washington went before #42, so did Sanders. Ended up with:

    42. O’Cyrus Torrence OG Florida
    116. DeMarvion Overshown LB Texas
    197. Brenton Strange TE Penn State

    Strange won’t last that long.

    Blah! Not worth it. lol

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Absolutely agreed. I’ve been working on trading up ever since our clown owner got our 1st round pick forfeited. It never ends well for me when I try to trade up.

We should stick @ 51 unless an ELITE talent falls to the 40s… which isn’t likely to happen.

  19. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I can’t wait so we can schedule the Fest. This years’ feats of strength and erring of grievances is going to be epic. 😐

  20. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ll be really happy if we end up with Darnell Washington, yet I feel like he’d be a fish out of water compared to the rest of our Offensive players who are fast and furious.

It’s kind of like when Gesicki was in last season, the opposition knew we were going to pass. Methinks that when Washington is in this season, the opposition will know we are going to run.

    Know what I mean?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Until Washington’s route-running gets cleaned up and he transitions into a regular pass-catcher, I’m not sure he helps us in our “window”… whether it be 2 or 3 years.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Doesn’t work that way in reverse, he can always stay in to block for a pass, then slip out to the flank, if there’s no one to block, it wouldn’t be a tell

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I don’t think there’s a parallel MF 13. A tight end is often used as a blocker on a passing play. But when the tight end is inept at blocking the teams figure out that we are going to pass when he’s on the field. Having a great blocker on the field does not stop us from passing to any of three running backs and wide receivers.

In short having a pass only tight end on the field signals that we’re going to pass because he cannot block. Having a great blocking tight end does not restrict us from throwing to 3 wide receivers and / or a running back.

  21. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Kudos to both Steve and Rockphin as I stand corrected. Thank you, both!

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Are you guys happy?! LOL
Now I have to reconsider Darnell Washington over Luke Musgrave, just TWO DAYS before the Draft begins! LOL 😉

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Being 100% honest (as always, I shouldn’t have to preface anything like this), I believe Darnell Washington doesn’t make it to us @ 51… and I think that SUCKS.

However, should Washington last to us @ 51, he’d be my selection.

    M13
Musgrave is a nice falllback option after Washington
The reality is he is probably more likely to develop into a really good receiver than Washington
But I don’t think, when it comes To blocking, they are equals

And that’s why I see Washington as our top target and some one like Musgrave as a second option

  27. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

People are a saying we are very interested Devon Archane

I don’t think we need to target him at 51
But it would be crazy to lick him in the 3rd

  28. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I believe this was in error, because it’s the jets not Packers creating the space

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers will pick up Rodgers’ guaranteed option bonus of $58.3 million, converting it into a signing bonus, creating $43.7 million in cap space and making his 2023 cap hit just $15.7 million.

Looking at the Packers dead money of 40.3m, which comes from bonus money paid to him last year, is all they have to account for

The jets on the other hand are accountable for 59.5m in dead money now, if he doesn’t play this year, which is the guaranteed option bonus

  29. Nice write, Mike. All I’m saying about the TEs we have is they fill an important role in blocking. Our offense goes through the WRs and RBs. I’m not against adding a TE just don’t think that will be the key to our season.

  30. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M13, another guy I would add to the UDFA list (though he might get drafted) is NDSU RB/FB/HB/TE Hunter Luepke, 6’1 230. He ran a 4.57 at the combine and is a good receiver, sticky hands. Also played in every phase of ST throughout his college career. Seems to run ‘heavy footed” to me at times.

    I like Trent Thompson also.

  31. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There are going to be so many good RB’s available at #84. It will be hard to pass up.

Obviously these character issues make him unacceptable for a top 50 pick

My feeling is the positions we would like to land in this draft is OL, TE, RB and maybe the best defensive player available at any position.

We’ve addressed defense pretty aggressively the last couple of years. But the same can be said on offense.

  42. I can see a draft like this.
    51. TE Luke Musgrave
    84. OT Matthew Bergeron
    197. IOL Juice Scruggs
    238. DT Nesta Jade Silvera

    • Gesicki might be the better athlete, especially in basketball and high pointing the ball. Musgrave has the same size but is more nimble and is projected to be a better overall TE. He doesn’t have to be the guy right away but he works his way into the lineup as the season goes on.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So, just for clarification, I read in the USA Today Money section, “Mortgage fee changes are coming next month.” As in, May 1.

What I got out of it was nothing like yesterday’s articles, which might have had to do with me trying to scroll through all the advertisements to try and read it.

Basically, those with lower credit scores, and they didn’t give the breakoff, will pay about 1.25% less, down from 2.75% to 1.5%. Those with higher credit scores, will pay 0.125% more, up from 0.25% to 0.375% or one eighth of a percent. In the example they gave on $300,000 loan, the borrower with the greater risk (lower credit score) will pay $3,750 v $8,250 in closing costs v the borrower with less risk who will pay $1,125 v $750 or $375 more.

So, credit scores still matter, i.e. because you pay $3,000 more in closing costs with shitty credit.

Sounds a little different to me than what I was reading yesterday….actually a lot different…lol

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Also, this change only affects government backed mortgages, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

This has zero impact on about 40 to 60% of the population. And, I have no mortgage…lol.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Lol…mathematically accurate is $2,625 more for shitty credit.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You’re comparing what each group pays vs each other and saying better credit score still pays less, which is true

Basically it’s a tax on people, that have taken care of their credit and given it to those that are deadbeats

Obama did something similar with banking accounts, they stopped charging some fees for deadbeats, then raised overall fees to make up for it

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

It’s a government backed program…what do you expect. Go to a private lender. You have a choice, we all do.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s the same thing as yesterday, shitty credit score people pay less than before, in one way or another, that lost revenue has to be made up some how, so to make it up, people with good credit scores will be paying for it and more than before

Another fuck you to middle class people from Joe biden

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

According to the article, and I don’t know shit about how FICO scores or how credit rating bureaus do any of their calculations, but apparently there was bias in the rating systems. I’m sure there has always been bias, especially discriminatory factors which the article mentions, as well. If this corrects the bias, ok. How would have no clue.

I think it’s shitty that those with better credit scores takes a hit for this, even if only 1/8 of one percent.

  46. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tony Pauline (PFN) final mock has us taking:

    51) Miami Dolphins: Trenton Simpson, LB, Clemson
Trenton Simpson is an athletically gifted LB who plays with an explosive style. While his instincts are of concern to me, the ability to cover a large amount of area in a short amount of time is appealing. Simpson offers scheme and positional versatility, but he may need to play in a simple defensive system.

    84) Miami Dolphins: Luke Schoonmaker, TE, Michigan
Luke Schoonmaker was highly rated coming into the season and did a good job last year despite playing through an injury. He’s not the exceptional downfield threat teams want at tight end these days, but he does everything very well and comes with an upside. The Dolphins need to find a starting tight end to give their offense another element.

Wouldn’t be bad. That was with (at #51) TE Washington, Jack Campbell, OL Cody Mauch and CB’s Cam Smith and Clark Phillips III still on the board.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      No on both these guys

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

horrible draft if those guys were still on the board! We already have a fast LB with bad instincts that misses tons of tackles. We need his replacement who will be a good instincts guy that is a great tackler! CAMPBELL COME ON DOWN! (or washington as TE would be great too)

  47. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Arif Hasan (PFN) final mock:

    51) Miami Dolphins: Luke Musgrave, TE, Oregon State
Some analysts think that Luke Musgrave is a first-round tight end. Though he has some worrying similarities to Mike Gesicki, Musgrave is worth the investment, especially if the Dolphins want to continue being a track team on offense.

    84) Miami Dolphins: Blake Freeland, OT, BYU
Adding another OL option always seems correct for Miami, and adding Blake Freeland with limited picks is a good move.

  48. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

I have no mortgage either, but I don’t think this is a penalty insofar as no one is being told to send in money after the fact of having made a contract, nor is anyone forced to do business with these lenders. No credit worthy borrower is going to be priced out of a loan by this small rate change.

This is more of an adjustment to make the credit score impact more fair to everyone and less of an impact on personal finances, especially those of people with less financial savvy. These rates have fluctuated many times over the years, but these days, anytime they can, certain political groups try to report everything they can in a way that is unflattering to Biden or Democrats.

That whole article used inflammatory language to try to enrage people. Banking industry rates fluctuate. The Fed is driving up inflation and cratering the stock market. Why aren’t conservatives complaining about that?

But I do see a problem here.
I am actually opposed to the enormous power this FICO thing has attained.

I think it should not be used for hiring decisions, except maybe if the job is related to handling finances.

It should not set insurance rates or apartment rental rates or credit card rates or even borrowing rates for car loans or home loans.

Why make people pay more to borrow money if they already have credit problems?
Just don’t let them borrow any more, or more than they can than they can afford.

That is, I do think Credit Scores should be used to control the amount that can be borrowed or the pay back payments as a ratio to income, so that people are prevented from borrowing more than they can afford to make the payments on.

But all borrowers should be charged the same interest rate. Those with poor credit history should just be forbidden from borrowing more until they pay down what they owe.

If they already have a huge credit card debt as a percentage of income, the rules should prevent them from borrowing more or charging more on their cards. But their interest rate should not be higher, because that just makes it harder or impossible for them to ever get out of debt.

The credit companies want people to be caught in debt forever, like the old “owe my soul to the company store” thing.

The credit score is a tool that the big banks etc. are using to keep the mid to low-average income folks as their credit slaves. Thus making them a permanent source of income to the lenders.

I also think there should be a law against those payday loans which allow a person (an ignorant person) to borrow against future paycheck income. This is another way of lenders making unsophisticated citizens into financial slaves.

I’d like to see the common-sense conservatives and the protect-the-consumer liberals join forces to eradicate both of these slave-making perversions of free enterprise, as both of them siphon off cash that people could use in ways that stimulate the economy and support local and small businesses instead of enriching the banks

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The Fed is driving up inflation and cratering the stock market. Why aren’t conservatives complaining about that?

Have you been under a rock the past year? Inflation has been used plenty against Biden, who blames it on Russia, even though it was way up before the war

The bigger question is why the liberal voters are ok with inflation

FICO score shows responsibility, and if you have a low score you’re more likely to commit embezzlement

Really it shouldn’t set CC rates?

Rent? If you have a low score you’re more likely to not pay your rent or pay late

Yes, and one of the biggest problems was with the banking crash of 2008?

Left making it easy to get credit, so minorities could buy houses, how’d that pride of ownership workout?

You say you’re against that and many of the things conservatives are against, but keep enabling

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Many people with low scores simply don’t understand what they are doing, or they are greedy and can’t afford the lifestyle they wish they could live, so they charge it.

I am opposed to people getting easy credit, but the big banks are not.

They love to grant credit to fringe consumers and then use their poor financial skills to rake in more fees, higher interest rates, and various forms of foreclosures. Big Banks and other lenders love FICO disparities.

You slant everything so it looks like you want it to look to satisfy your preconceived notions or political bias.

        For example
FICO scores are unrelated to embezzlement.

Right-wing fringe groups only try to blame Biden for inflation and everything else they can, just so as to try to get voters against him. They don’t try to understand all the various forces that are causing the inflation, such as COVID spending under Trump, WHICH I WAS IN FAVOR of for Trump to do to keep the country afloat while we had a medical emergency.

Biden is not the cause of everything that is bad in the world.

        For example
His policies did not cause Aaron Rodgers to sign to the NY Jets.

        Did they?

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        Lol…at the jets’ decision.

However, the rest of your comments on FICO make total sense to me as explained.

Bidenflation is directly related to his stance on energy, war on fossil fuels, GND and his spending

You act like he had nothing to do with it

FICO scores aren’t directly related to embezzlement true, but that’s not what I said

Try to get a job in IT and see how that works out for you, if you have a low credit score and have access to PII

The scenario is this, you owe lots of money, say 20k and someone approaches you and asks you to send them a file and will pay you 20k

Which person is more likely to send the file, the guy with the low credit score that owes the 20k or the guy with no debt high credit score?

  53. After Thursday night we’ll have a better idea of who’s going to be there for us. Then we’ll have to bite our nails during the first 19 picks of day 2. LOL

I mentioned Tippmann from WI awhile back. Another plus for him is his position flexibility. I don’t like really tall G/C but he could potentially play every position on the OL. Does anybody know where he’s projected to go now? I think he’s a mid second to mid third round guy, but I usually have to go a round for how they project these guys. They’re all over hyped and pushed up. Especially in a draft like this one where there isn’t a lot of high end talent.

  55. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Without looking it up. Who is the longest tenured player on Miami’s offense?

  56. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

CBS has an article titled 2023 NFL Draft: Five teams most likely to trade into and five most likely to trade out of first round

They of course list Miami as number one…. SMH

  57. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I cannot get an accurate feel or tangible grade on Luke Musgrave’s blocking ability. Most of that comes from Musgrave only playing 2 games last season before he got his knee wrecked (medical red flag) and missed the remainder of the season. What’s more, he’s only had 13 starts in his collegiate career (another red flag).

I’ve viewed scouting reports from others, but they seem to be all over the place in terms of his blocking ability: some say he’s the next Mike Gesicki, and others say he’s a fair in-line blocking TE.

His ceiling (like Gesicki before him) is off the charts… but if he can’t block, I can’t draft him into the Mike McDaniel Offense.

So as I’m polishing up my final picks, I realize that I cannot vouch for his blocking prowess.

    • I watched some highlights of him last night and he has the same issues as a receiver that Gesicki has. He’s not quick twitch, he goes down easily by contact. But he can get open and make plays like Gesicki. I’m not sure he’s the kind of TE we want but how would any of us really know that.

  58. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So now I have Brenton Strange going to us @ 84. Who do we draft @ 51?

Yes, probably the BPA on our board. Who will it be?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If we could trade down just a bit from 84 and get a 4th-rounder — still being able to draft Strange — we could likely land Braeden Daniels in the 4th.

That absolutely opens us up to taking the BPA — regardless of position — @ 51.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

For Rockphin, that could be Jack Crawford
For me, that could be Drew Sanders
For Tim, that could be Jamyr Gibbs
For ‘X’, that could be ________

    • I’d say BPA at any of these positions: DL, Edge, CB, OL, TE or RB.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

And, at 51 how do you know the BPA at the spot in any of those positions? How do you know Washington is better than Campbell is better than Mauch or is better than DL.

Pick the BPA that will start and fill a hole/need. We have a few holes on the OL and TE. Our D was built mostly last year, but was mismanaged and mostly infirmed. No holes, imo, especially with Jalen Ramsey added.

  59. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Greg Cote has us drafting a RG at 51 in his latest mock….

RG is the BEST player on our line. (when our oft-injured LT is injured again)

    • I wonder is he thinks Hunt will then move to RT. I don’t have a problem drafting a guy who has position versatility that could play inside or outside. We need more competition and better depth on the OL.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

There are two draft prospects that I know of who can play all 5 positions on the O-Line: Braeden Daniels and Cody Mauch.

Just speculation on my part, but I’m not sure we let Gesicki walk at the price he took. Maybe we would have signed him at that price but he chose to leave. His last year with us definitely hurt his market value and he may have chosen to go somewhere he could improve his own value knowing he wasn’t likely to see a big increase in production with us.

    • That’s possible and he might have known that he wasn’t a fit in our offense so go to a team that wants him like you said.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Gesicki saw fewer snaps than Durham Smythe last season, and both were healthy. We don’t want a Gesicki clone… we want a TE who can actually block and receive. It’s that simple, guys.

And we don’t need a George Kittle clone (I don’t believe that guy is available in this Draft class), but we want an all-around TE, like Kittle.

Kind of a bougie thing, as music festivals go or at least how they used to be. Everything taken care of, condo, music venue on the property, walking distance. Beach set up for during the day, chairs etc set up for the music in your own ‘cove’. All you take with you is an empty cooler. Order drinks, ice, food, merch from the app and delivered to you usually within 5 minutes. Or can wander around and get it yourself. Lol. Having your own cove or base camp was great, had a place to sit when you wanted, leave your stuff, find your people. 😂 I’d say 75% of the attendees were within 10 years of my age+/-, so that was cool. Lots of gray hair. Lol. It was like everyone had raised their kids and gotten them out of the house and were ready to party. Lots of vaping and gummies/edibles, not to mention the old school way occasionally. I hadn’t listened to some of the groups beforehand, but it was all great. Kind of pricey but worth it. I’ll go every year. Highly recommend.

I think we also need to keep in mind that when we say “they” we are lumping together diverse opinions within the organization. The front office isn’t one uni-mind. There are strong opinions on both sides of every subject in there just like there is on here. The GM takes all those opinions and weighs them against his bias and considers many non-player-specific variable when making the final selection. We always hear the stories “so-and-so” was banging the table for “so-and-so” EZE is hear mostly because Welker loves him. Will Grief give more weight to say, Embree’s opinion than he does to Marvin Allen?

I am more guilty than some in blaming Grief for picks (it is his ship ultimately) but we don’t know the calculus behind the decisions.

I am optimistic right now even if we don’t make any picks this season. That’s why I would rather draft for the future NOW instead of throwing away the future for a “Chance to get the missing piece” These are 2nd & 3rd round picks. The chance of any of them being a season changer this season is so slim that it makes more sense to aim for next year. (kind of like they did last draft with EZE and what’shisface the LB.

    • It’s definitely a collaborate effort. Grier is just the final say after many discussions with his scouting staff and coaches. You always want to get the type of players a HC wants. You can’t be a totalitarian GM and don’t work with your coaches. There have been some of those over the years and it rarely works.

Grier is not that guy. He does listen to all involved. He doesn’t have a big ego. He just did a press conference with Asst. GM Marvin Allen. He brought him to the forefront. Allen will probably be a GM in the next couple of years.

  68. Krishna, when it comes to the draft the way I look at it is you don’t want to miss on premium picks in the talent pool in any given year. With later picks you want to target guys that you think you can develop, or hit on a gem.

That’s why reaching for need with premium picks is bad business. You don’t pass on higher graded players for a need. My best example is the Cardinals taking Levi Brown over Adrian Peterson. Brown was the 2nd best tackle in the draft behind Joe Thomas but he wasn’t considered anywhere near Thomas’ level. The Cardinals drafted Brown to be Matt Leinart’s blind side protector at RT. Makes sense but he wasn’t a top 5 talent.

Brown played 7 seasons as an average RT and Peterson is a HOF RB after 15 seasons.

GREAT PLAYOFF WIN in the NHL playoffs for the Florida Panthers!! Despite being outshot by the Boston Bruins almost 2-1, they hung in there and got the winner in overtime at the TD GARDEN!!

The heavily favored Bruins still lead this series 3 games to 2. YES, this is the same Bruins who ran roughshod over the NHL on their way to an all time record 65 wins in the regular season! One Boston observer said yesterday “Finishing off the Panthers is a mere formality. They’ll win by a blowout in Game 5!”

“NOT SO FAST,MY FRIEND!” The Bruins have made a very serious mistake. They gave the Florida Panther team HOPE! This team now believes THEY CAN WIN A 7 GAME SERIES over the team that’s been touted “The Greatest Team in NHL History.” Somewhere, Lee Corso is smiling!!

28 years ago, me and Mrs. OD drove from Columbus, Ohio, to Pittsburgh to see the longshot Panthers win game 7 vs. the home standing Pittsburgh Penguins in “The Igloo” in the Steel City. Pittsburgh had Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, and a host of All-Pro superstars who were expected to SWEEP the Panthers in 4-straight!!

    It didn’t happen.

In front of south Florida personalties like Dan Marino and Wayne Huizenga, the upstart Panthers WON game 7 and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals where, eventually, they lost to a better Colorado Avalanche team lead by goal tender Patrick Roy.

NONE THE LESS, Me and Mrs. OD have NEVER FORGOTTEN that incredible experience we had one May night in Pittsburgh. It was a MOST enjoyable trip back to Columbus, where I was employed at the time.

With my #1 team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, facing elimination tomorrow night vs. Toronto, I have temporarily shifted my thoughts from the TBL to the Panthers, for whom my wife and I share a soft spot in our hearts. Ideally, we’d like BOTH of Florida’s hockey teams to advance in the playoffs.
