The case for passing on Cook

If/when Minnesota Vikings RB gets released, the Dolphins should just sit back and read about while drinking their morning coffee, as if it’s just another news story, a story they’re not particularly interested in. Cook is a nice player, but he will be asking for money we don’t have, and frankly, I think the guy we drafted in RD 3, De’Von Achane can provide the playmaking ability Cook would bring. It’s not that Cook isn’t a very good player, he is, but RB isn’t our problem. Mostert, Wilson and Acahane can give you the production that Cook can give you. We’d have to overpay to get Cook, some team who really needs him will do that. It happens every year. I feel that Cook is more duplication, although at a higher level, but Cook is also 28, so you overpay for a 28 year old running back? No thanks!

Raheem Mostert actually averaged more yards per carry (4.9 – 4.4) than Dalvin Cook last season. Over their careers, the disparity is greater in favor of Mostert. Cook is not a grinder, a guy that wears down opposing defenses, he’s a similar type runner to what we have. I know we’re close, but we need cap room to sign our own players like DE’s Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler. Cook is a luxury we cannot afford. We need to also get more from our draft picks. We barely used our first pick last season, LB Channing Tindall. We spent a 3rd RD pick, once again our 1st pick in the draft, on RB De’Von Achane, and RB is the easiest position to transition to the NFL from college football. This kid is going to be electric, and he will keep both Mostert and Wilson fresh. RB by committee is the NFL way now, so few teams rely on one stud back, and the ones that do usually end up losing them for a spell and then need to change their offensive scheme to be competitive.

Our offense is all about our playmakers on the outside, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and then contributions with whomever makes the roster cuts, Berrios, Wilson, Anderson and Ezukanma. We added a lot of blocking at the TE position, gone is the finesse TE Mike Gesicki, and TE’s Durham Smythe, Eric Saubert, and Naples fave Tyler Kroft are here to block. Not a one of them is a dangerous receiving threat, and Head Coach Mike McDaniel vowed to run the ball more, and we will, but between Mostert, Wilson and A-Chain, you won’t miss Dalvin Cook. Who knows, maybe either Tanner Conner of 6th RD draft pick Elijah Higgins will be the receiving terror similar to what George Kittle provided for McDaniel’s offense with the SF 49ers.

  2. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I have consulted with the baby back rib council
We have reviewed all the bones and performed the usual pork rituals of farting in circles and rubbing our pork bellies with a dry rub

All signs point to the Dolphins signing Dalvin Cook

So we have that going for us….

  3. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

100% agreed, Mike. Get me Sieler and Wilkins extended first. Get me another quality olineman second. Get me another pass rusher third- if we want a guy that played for the Vikings last year, they are looking to trade one. Cook would be my fourth priority.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Actually, based on what Fangio said yesterday, or the other day, about our depth on defense, get me another ILB fourth.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I read this earlier. I often disagree with RGIII’s takes. They are usually far more emotional than logical. RBs aren’t getting ‘hosed’. They just aren’t worth what they used to be.

The market is what the market is, and the Vikings clearly think the money he has left on his contract is worth more to them than the player is. It isn’t rocket science, and Cook isn’t entitled to it unless his contract says he is, lol.

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If Cook wasn’t willing to take a pay cut with the Vikings, not sure he’s going to want to play for much less elsewhere. That said, what will he do if he doesn’t get the offer he’s looking for?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He could find himself in a similar position Le’Veon Bell was in. He won’t be asking as much but there may not be a team willing to pay what he wants. Then he’ll have to decide to either play for less or sit out. That didn’t go so well for Bell

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The difference with Bell is he was offered a nice contract of 5 years $70M and turned it down. Never came close to getting anything like that again. Doh!!!

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – he felt like he played two positions, RB and WR and had the numbers to prove it. He was offered a fair contract, but not according to him.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah he was definitely a dual threat but he caught a lot of passes as a check down out of the backfield, he was reaching with his WR claims.

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Nice write up Mike E. I completely agree.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hey Tim – how about those Mets? They better just stay the course, bring up Ronnie Mauricio and get him in the outfield. If they can trade either Scherzer or Verlander or any veteran pitchers, even if they have to eat salary, and get some young prospects in return. Same goes for Canha and Marte

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

In other words, they can’t get desperate and trade prospects for any players, leave the farm intact

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah they’re kind of a flawed team. We have a few core players and the young bucks, but after that there is too much inconsistency.

    4. Miami Dolphins
Roster core: QB Tua Tagovailoa, WR Tyreek Hill, CB Jalen Ramsey, WR Jaylen Waddle, OT Terron Armstead

    Average core age: 27.6

The Dolphins’ offensive core proved its potential in 2022. When all four of Tagovailoa, Hill, Waddle and Armstead were on the field, the team averaged a massive 0.24 EPA per play. For context, the Chiefs led the league with 0.17 EPA per play overall. Add Ramsey in to spice up the defense, and this core looks dangerous.

Cheats were #27, this was for top 5 core players

not disagreeing with Mike’s article above, but this just in:

The Miami Central High School alum’s local pro team, the Miami Dolphins, were reported as “a real possibility,” per the Miami Herald prior to his release, and the new free agent is adding credence to that report with his latest Instagram post: a photo of him dancing after the Vikings defeated the Dolphins 24-16 in Week 6 of the 2022 season.

This was the Fest game, so I and many of you saw this live.

We had held Cook to about 2 ypc (approx. 24 yds on 12 carries)
    until BOOM!
Cook ran for a 53 yard game-sealing touchdown with 3:15 left in the game.

He can beat Aaron Rodgers or (fill in the blank) on one play.
    We need that.

Maybe Achane can do that. Maybe not. We know Cook can.

This is great news for our offense.
Tyreek was mostly winging it last year!!!

Masala reports that Hill says this:
“… for me going into Year 2 it’s all about learning the playbook more, understanding where Tua (Tagovailoa) wants me to be at on the field and how just everything operates,” Hill told the media after Thursday’s final minicamp session. “Last year for me was like a blur. I had to come to a new place, I had to learn the playbook, I had to get to know my teammates. And this year everything has slowed down, so I’m just really trying to understand playbook, formations and routes and route depths and stuff like that. So it’s going pretty well.”

In fact, Hill claims that he wasn’t well-versed in the offense last year and was relying heavily on his athleticism to just go out on the field and make plays.

“Last year I was just out there balling,” Hill said. “I was just out there just using all athleticism. Like, ‘here, Tua, I’m going to be here and we’re just going to do that.’

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Also Masala reports:
McDaniel says in the whole team film-study session,
he shows out the WRs for helping out the RBs by blocking downfield (or not).

Coach says, “… the best way to motivate receivers to take pride and detail in the run game, the best way to really emphasize that it takes all 11 players on the field to run the ball well, is to have them all watch that together. It’s the peer pressure from the locker room, guys saying ‘Dude, you’re just gonna loaf and let me get tattooed by a strong safety?’”

    Pretty smart using peer pressure.

McDaniel does say the OC also has to preach it,
and he says Wes Welker is a run-game guy.
“He just loves receiver blocks more than anything. “

    About the Mar-a-lago docs:
I think other ex-officials should be held accountable also, such as Biden.
Somebody needs to tighten up on that whole top secret document storage shit.

However, I’m a little on Trump’s side on this to a point.

I know almost all people probably have some docs lying around the house from work that probably shouldn’t have left the office,

but they rode home in our “brief case of good intentions” —

meaning we meant to do some “homework” with them,
or we thought of them as cool mementos,
or we just sloppily grabbed a sheaf of papers late one afternoon on our way out,
and there was some some “sensitive stuff” mixed in,
and they’ve been shoved in the “junk drawer” and forgotten.

As a recent retiree, I am going through a lifetime of file folders lately
and wondering WTF is this and why do I still have this?

Of course, I was not the POTUS (or anything else important), so it isn’t as crucial.

I think where Trump got in greater trouble was by not sending them back
as soon as they were requested or found in his possession.

That makes him look both a little guilty via intent and,
once again, that whole “I can do this just because I am ME crap.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

These classified docs aren’t really even classified, the time element has mostly made them unclassified

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Bullshit excuse. Time does not declassify a document. The President doesn’t waive a magic wand and they’re declassified. • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

There are several important differences, such as that Biden is still in office and as soon as his lawyers found the shit, they sent them back,
but the fact remains that sensitive papers got transported to Biden’s office or residence, which is both stupid and wrong.

I just think those old guys need to get with the program and quit shuffling pieces of paper anyway.

Why are Top Secret documents ever printed out anyway these days?

Does anybody really think stamping a paper at the top with some 1800s rubber and cheap red ink is going to keep our national secrets secure?

Oh, like a spy or crook is going to say,
“oh well, that one is stamped, so I can’t steal/sell that one.”

Miami Dolphins Minicamp Wrap-Up: Evaluating Tua Tagovailoa Ahead of Year 4
    By
    Adam H. Beasley
    June 9, 2023 | 9:42 AM EDT
MIAMI GARDENS. Fla. — There was no greater sign of just how far Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa has come in the last 12 months than how little reaction there was to one bad practice.

After lighting up the Dolphins’ defense for much of spring ball — Tua was so good late in OTAs, he won the orange jersey as the final voluntary practice’s best player — he threw a couple of picks Thursday.

A year ago, it would have been a headline on every football website in America. In 2023, it was met with a shrug of the shoulders.

Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa Ready To Soar in Year 4?
Tagovailoa was on time and smart with the vast majority of his throws during the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp that wrapped Thursday.

And while it’s foolish to extrapolate too much from a handful of practices in glorified underwear, the improvement year over year is stark.

  36. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Don’t take our word for it. Listen to the people with all the information. Here are comments about Tagovailoa from Dolphins coaches and players from the past week.

    Miami Dolphins Coach Mike McDaniel
“I think Year 2, the prerequisite is that he, as the quarterback, he has to have ownership of everything he’s doing and what everyone else is doing as the facilitator of the offense, and he’s checked that box every day.

“It’s been really cool in a year’s time, how he’s not only learned the language but is now fluent in it. That opens quarterbacks up to doing some of the components of the job — it’s really hard to try to be the leader of an offense and motivate guys and encourage guys when you need to or maybe be hard on guys when you need to, when you’re just trying to spit out a play and know your own assignment.

“So this offseason, hoping that I would see a graduation of sorts and really have every single day. That’s first and foremost. For his game, you’re less concerned about the really good plays. Your attention is less drawn to that, and it’s more about consistency of the entire practice. Just like a game where you can have some — he had his games where he made some big-time plays, and then he wasn’t as happy with the rest of the game.

“So kind of looking at it through that lens, he’s really been one of our more consistent if not — I think he’s been as consistent as anybody day in and day out, which has residual effects to the whole team. I know the team can feel it as well.”

    Offensive Coordinator Frank Smith
“Year 1 you’re learning a new language, and then Year 2, you’re mastering that language and you’re really putting your flavors on how you see things, your anticipation of routes, how you’re communicating with the guys and what they’re looking to do.

“So just his growth has been awesome. His understanding and timing and just anticipation and then getting the added chemistry with the guys. Because last year was the first time for all of that. This year now it’s, OK, at this point, we get this — you have increased dialogue of what everyone’s trying to do inside of a play, so he’s been great. Command of the offense is great. Couldn’t be happier with where he’s at.”

    Linebacker Jerome Baker
“He’s one of those guys that every year he’s trying to get better at every aspect. This year you can tell physically he looks different. Mentally he’s sharp, I don’t think he’s thrown a pick this offseason. (Editor’s Note: Baker spoke on Wednesday.)

“Mentally, he’s just sharp, and he’s on it. You can tell now that he’s on guys when they are not doing right, and that’s just good to see.”

    Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa
“[My] biggest growth in terms of comfort? I think, for me, it’s continuing to work on the little things. One of the things that we’ve been harping on has been operation. When I think of my position, I think of what have I done as a leader for the guys up front, for the guys out there to have gotten them better? What have we done?

“So I think we’ve been doing a great job, working operation, doing some cadence deals, motions, trying to work a lot of things just to give some eye candy for the defense and forcing them to communicate in the back end.”

I don’t see him signing with an AFCE team though the Jets have the money. I don’t see him signing with a rebuilding team like Indy either. I could see a team with cash jumping in like the Cowboys, Bears, Steelers, Bengals, Browns and even Lions.

Depends on what Cook wants, money or a chance at a championship.

I could see him going to the Broncos or Chargers.

Last month, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Anthony Bass drew quite a lot of backlash when he re-shared an Instagram post that claimed Bud Light and Target were “evil” and “demonic” for their support of the LGBTQ community. As of Friday, he is no longer pitching for the Blue Jays.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Bass’ performance this season was the primary reason he was cut, though the “distraction” Bass caused due to his comments was “something we had to factor in.”

“There’s a myriad of variables, and performance is usually the driving one,” Atkins said. “Performance was a large aspect of this decision. Distraction was a small part of it, and something that we had to factor in.”

Dolphins stock report: Who’s rising and falling after offseason workouts?
    Daniel Oyefusi
    Fri, Jun 9, 2023, 9:05 AM CDT

    Will post each individually.

    RISING
    WR Robbie Chosen
Chosen is one of several players vying for the No. 3 wide receiver role behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. And with both limited in team drills throughout OTAs and minicamp, Chosen stepped up as a reliable target and developed a rapport with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The deep speed Chosen showcased during his time with the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals is still there, but he also impressed by separating from defenders on short and intermediate routes.

“I feel like having another speed guy, it never can go wrong by adding another speed guy,” Hill said. “Him being 6-3 — I didn’t know he was that tall — so him being 6-3, lanky, being able to catch the ball with ease is definitely going to help us out in the red zone because he’s a taller guy that can run some routes that me and ‘J. Dub’ [Waddle] may not be able to run. So adding him is definitely going to be valuable.”

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Good. We need him to be productive. I like Berrios a lot, but I see him as having the same type of receiver skill set at Hill and Waddle, obviously not as talented .

  47. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    RISING

    LB Mitchell Agude
Outside linebackers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips were among the many veterans who practiced sparingly during team drills, which allowed Agude, an undrafted rookie, to get more snaps. And the University of Miami product by way of UCLA took advantage, giving Miami’s offensive linemen fits. Agude has great size for an outside linebacker at 6-4 and 242 pounds and frequently found his way into the backfield, whether it was using his speed to get past blockers or overwhelming them with his power. Things often change when pads are put on and physically ramps up, but Agude will be one to watch in training camp.

“You know it’s on tape, what you’ve been seeing, he’s a baller,” Phillips said. “He’s super twitchy, he’s super athletic.”

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    RISING

    DB Bryce Thompson
The Dolphins signed Thompson from the XFL in the middle of the offseason workout program but he didn’t look behind, recording multiple interceptions in team drills, including a pair on the final day of minicamp. Thompson still faces an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster because of Miami’s depth in the secondary, particularly at cornerback, but he left a good first impression with his new team.

  49. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    RISING

    RB De’Von Achane
The first few practices open to media provided an early glimpse at how Achane, the team’s third-round pick, could be a contributor as a rookie. On one play, he would make himself open underneath as a checkdown option. On another, he was separating from a flatfooted defender along the sideline for a deep reception.

While Achane is the youngest member of a veteran running back room, offseason practices showed that the Dolphins will have a multitude of creative ways to get the ball in his hands.

“What we’re trying to do is to make him a complete back,” running backs coach Eric Studesville said. “It’s an intentional thing. We want to get him exposed to every part of our offense, so he is getting used to the whole offense.”

  50. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    RISING

    DB Justin Bethel
The 32-year-old veteran’s biggest contribution throughout his career has been as a special teams ace. But Bethel logged a significant amount of snaps in team drills over the last few weeks and held his own. It was reminiscent of the job he did after he was pressed into defensive snaps in 2022 amid a spate of injuries. If Bethel makes the 53-man roster, it will primarily be for his special-teams prowess. But his ability to play defense in a pinch also helps his prospects.
    —————-
I didn’t know he was that old.

  51. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    FALLING

    LB Channing Tindall
At the NFL Scouting Combine, McDaniel said he was “expecting a big offseason and a big jump in Year 2” for Tindall, the team’s third-round pick and top selection in the 2022 Draft. He played sparingly as a rookie and acknowledged the defensive playbook was tough to grasp at times.

But the five practices open to give gave no indication of the progression Tindall has made as he enters his second season. He did not participate in team drills for unknown reasons. Furthermore, McDaniel said that Andrew Van Ginkel, normally an outside linebacker, has been taking snaps at inside linebacker as Fangio seeks to find ways to get him on the field.

Jerome Baker and David Long Jr. are likely starters and Van Ginkel and Duke Riley offer veteran depth behind them. There is still time for Tindall but his lack of participation in offseason practices leaves the question open whether he’s ready to contribute in 2023.
    ———————–
He is in serious bust territory, IMO.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The. Knock on him at Georgia was he couldn’t get a handle on the playbook, which is why he didn’t log that much playing time. Seems to be the case here as well.

  52. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    FALLING

    QB Mike White
Though McDaniel said that there would be a competition for the backup role behind Tagovailoa, White was viewed as the early favorite over second-year Skylar Thompson player because of the contract he signed (two years, $8 million), his experience and familiarity with the offense.

However, in the practices open to the media, White did not distinguish himself as the clear No. 2 option. In fact, there were multiple practices in which Thompson looked more comfortable running the offense. Training camp, the team’s pair of joint practices and the three preseason games will play a major factor in who ultimately earns the role of the backup. But OTAs and minicamp showed that the competition remains wide open.

  53. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Brian, as far as I know, Cam Smith still has not signed his rookie deal.

    ———————
I remember watching one of the UGA playoff games where the other ILB kept yelling at him for missing his assignments and/or not reacting quickly enough. Can’t remember his name but he got drafted really high.

That was my worry about him when we drafted him. Has all the physical tools to an elite level but not so much upstairs.

  55. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

With the immediate chemistry Anderson has developed with Tua and also having Berrios, Cedric Wilson could be on the outs. Only thing saving him is we would only save 2 million and have a 6 million dead cap hit this year and 1 million next year. Maybe they can find a trade partner during TC who will take him for peanuts. Like a 2025 7th, LOL. This would save us 7 million to the cap this year and next with 1 mill dead cap this year and next.

Nakobe Dean who surprisingly dropped to the third round but was taken 19 spots before Tindall.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I guess teams were right on Dean also as he only played sparingly and ST’s with 13 total tackles and 2 solo in the playoffs. Still more than we got from Tindall.

The emergence of Bryce Thompson in OTA’s and Mini Camp
Not to overlook some glimmer of hope shown by Iggy in this new defense
We also brought back Tino Ellis for another look

I can’t help but think Keion Crossen will be a cap casualty this year. We would recoup all of his $3,155,000 with no dead money.

It could come down to the health and availability of Needham and Williams come the start of TC but it doesn’t have to be the case. I think we only keep 6 CB’s at the most.

I get using the RB in pass pro, but I’ve never been in favor of it.
I think a lot of shoulders get hurt that way.
RBs are not natural blockers. They’re good at making guys miss.

I’d much rather Mostert, for example, be fresh and pain-free in the 4th qtr to break off a huge gain to seal a victory.

If he’s had to pick up a LB that outweighs him by 20-30 pounds coming head on at full speed even 5 times, that will have diminished his ability to have quick feet or break tackles as a rusher.

Getting smashed by a 275-pound bull-rushing DE that got loose or some 300-pound maniac DT on an inside stunt has ended the season for a bunch of RBs.

And Achane … jeez, even at 190, he’s giving away dangerous weight. Even most Safeties are often bigger than that.

Let the RBs leak out and catch a flip pass in the flat for 8 yards. That’s a good gain and will make the DL and EDGE guys hold back on their charge to watch the RB.

They don’t get off on that. They get high on trampling smaller guys.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

RBs have to block sometimes even to just get in the way for second. It’s usually to pick up a blitzer, not a DE/Edge guy.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

100% agreed, Tim. And some of the best chipping-RBs in the NFL have come in the form of smaller RBs, due to their low center of gravity.

Phelon/Wyoming, I know fishing the keys is a little different from up here on the panhandle. Do you do any jigging on the reefs down there?

Jigging is becoming more popular up here on the reefs especially if you get out late and don’t want to spend the time to catch bait.

I went ahead and got me an Ugly Stik medium heavy jigging rod set up for a spinning reel instead of a conventional so I can use the reel on other rods. I started experimenting with different reels. Always used Penn. I got a Daiwa BG 5000 for this set up. I talked to a guide here and he said Daiwa has really upped their game with the saltwater gear so figured I would try one out.

I think that is just based on the rookie signing formula. It will come down to how they structure the contract. It could be a little more depending on his signing bonus. He is still unsigned.

That is what happened with Holland. His first year base was only $660,000 but his signing bonus was $924,802 (for each year) putting his cap hit at $1,584,802.

Holland was drafted about 15 spots earlier in the 2nd round but not sure that affects it that much.

That is why I said 500K – 600K. Either way it’s a very small chip at out of our cap.

I just bought some hardbait squid for jigging
    ————————
I got some jigging spoons in various weights that mimic cigar minnows and other baits but can’t get them past the red snapper. They are thick up here. The guy I bought my boat from took his kayak out in the gulf about 1.5 miles offshore in Navarre Beach. They have an artificial reef just offshore made of concrete domes in about 30′ of water. They went out to catch mangrove snapper but all he could catch was red snapper and 1 mangrove. Said he caught about 12 red snapper all over 20″ before the weather turned on him.

It’s hard to get past them with cigar minnows to get any grouper. They do seem to pass on squid sometimes, so I also got some 5″ and 6″ Nomad Squidtrex jigs for grouper season.

I wouldn’t complain about catching red snapper, but when you can only keep 2 and that is all you can catch the fun goes away after a dozen.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think that’s why Sherfield wasn’t re-signed too, dead weight after the catch

Between Hill, Waddle, Berrios, Chosen and Achane we have speed to kill

      What does Wilson provide?

No team has won the Super Bowl with a RB making over $3 million in the last decade.

That’s a trivial stat, and adjusted for the highest salary in the group

I do agree though, that you have to spend your cap wisely and look at the value over replacement

Way to use BS stats to prove a point Ricky

Some of those guys got hurt, some just didn’t work out, it’s not like it was 124m in dead money or huge amounts of dead money, like the title led on

I don’t have a problem with any of those signings, it only hurts, if there’s huge dead money, something the jets and Packers seem to be setup for

Just because Ogbah missed most of last season with an injury doesn’t mean it was a bad contract. He was very productive for us the two seasons prior.

Jones also played well for 2 seasons before suffering what sounds like a career ending injury.
