2023 Preseason Game 2 – Dolphins @ Texans

It appears as if the Dolphins avoided a major disaster, losing LT Terron Armstead for an extended period of time after getting injured in practice, his first snap actually. Armstead left the field barely putting on any weight on the leg that was injured, but he says he’ll be ready for game #1, and there is no major injury requiring surgery. Now that we got that out of the way, there are a few things I want to see in preseason. Most importantly, NO MORE INJURIES!!! I would like to see CB Cam Smith continue to get important reps and show he’s serious about getting plenty of reps in the regular season. Backup QB’s Mike White and Skylar Thompson just have to do better. We know neither of them are going to run this offense as crisply and effectively as Tua, but we need them to be competent enough to put points on the board. I’m really hoping we see better play from both of these guys.

I would really like to see RB Chris Brooks get more carries, and see if we may possibly have something there. He’s not the prototype “big back” like Tennessee’s Derrick Henry, but compared to the stable of RB’s we have here in Miami, Brooks looks huge! I feel like all our RB’s are so close in running style and especially stature, that it would be nice to have a big back like Brooks make the team. Brooks is 6′ 223, while the lot of Mostert (5’10 205), Wilson (6′ 210), Ahmed (5’11 197), Gaskin (5’10 199) and Achane (5’9 188) are all very similar size wise. Yes, we have FB Alec Ingold who’s a load at 6’1 240, but Ingold has only 21 carries in 4 years in the NFL for a reason. Of course, the 4 best guys will make the team, this much I get, but I hope Brooks shows enough to be viewed as a possibilty to make the roster.

I’m curious to see more of LG Lester Cotton. He was great in practice, he had some very dominant reps, so I would love to see that dominance in game play, even if it’s a preseason game. It doesn’t matter what round you were drafted in on the O-line, if you can move people, you’re going to get noticed. Would I love Liam Eichenberg to play like the guy we hoped he could be when we moved up in the 2nd RD of the 2021 NFL at pick #42 to get him, of course, but at this point, I just want someone competent, and hungry for the job. If it’s Lester Cotton, who is actually 3rd string at RG, or Isaiah Wynn who is a veteran as well, I don’t care as long as they play well.

The competition at DT is pretty intense with DT’s Brandon Pili and Jaylen Twyman, Most importantly though, we need to get through the negotiations and sign DT/DE Christian Wilkins to a long term deal and keep him in Miami for another 6 years. He’s been an exemplary player, hard worker who brings it every week. Once Wilkins is signed the next up should be DT/DE Zach Sieler. There are some good battles at LB as well, with guys like Mitchell Agude, Mike Rose, and Aubrey Miller. It’s no given that last year’s 2nd RD pick LB Channing Tindall is a lock to make the roster, how these guys play on special teams could be the key to making the 53. BTW, the pronounced demise of the Mac was a bit premature. It’s slow, and uncooperative at times, and I do need to get a new one, but this article was written on the Mac, so LONG LIVE THE MAC!

I was happy to see a good productive practice today. Things were running pretty efficiently on both sides of the ball. Even though we lost by a large margin last week we had a really nice mix of run / pass on offense and this week was great. I wish we can duplicate this type of performance all year. (but better with practice)

This “Dress Rehearsal” looked pretty good. Especially after hearing how Hou was handing it to us in practice.

IT WAS GREAT to see the ‘Fins win this game, even if it was just a preseason victory.
Winning begets more winning. Winning produces a more positive attitude. It produces more energy and, hopefully, even better results.

HOWEVER, I’m still not sold on the offensive line. We’ve seen lackluster performances from the back-up QB’s. So it’s obvious Miami will only go as far as Tua can take us. If Tua goes down, the ‘Fins are dead!!

SO, Mike E., I agree that finding a spot on the roster for Ingold and another larger back should be strongly considered. Tua needs all the protection he can get.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I don’t wan to argue with someone who probably knows more than me, but my understanding from the medical books I read in my 20’s a sprain is an injury to the ligaments or capsule of a joint while a strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon. Not interchangeable but it is so far from the field I settled in I won’t argue.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        I stand corrected….thank you.

What is the difference between a sprain and a strain?
A sprain differs from a strain in that a sprain involves an injury to the bands of tissue that connect two bones together, whereas a strain involves an injury to a muscle or the band of tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone. Sprains overstretch or tear ligaments, while a strain involves overstretching or tearing muscles or tendons. As tendons are thick fibrous cords of tissue that connect to muscles, these are very common.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

So, with that…lol…ligaments take 3x’s the time to heal than muscles…or maybe I’m losing it…lol

27 There will be plenty of milk and meat to last your family through the winter.

MF13, and I mean no disrespect, but that is a highly modernized version of that passage from the Bible. What version do you favor?

I’m a King James Version myself, or for authenticity, the most literal translations from the ancient original languages I can find.

    C27 in the KJV reads:

1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

3 A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both.

4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.

6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

7 The full soul loatheth a honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

8 As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.

10 Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.

12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

13 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

14 He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

16 Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.

17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

18 Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

19 As in water, face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.

20 Hell and destruction are never full; as the eyes of man are never satisfied.

21 As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.

22 Though thou shouldest crush a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.

24 For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?

25 The hay appeareth, and the tender grass showeth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.

26 The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.

27 And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.

How many RB’s do you think we keep? I think Gaskin may get cut. I’d rather see them keep Brooks than Gaskin. I like Gaskin, but he doesn’t really bring anything Mostert, Wilson Jr., Achane and Ahmed already have. If we keep four, I can see Brooks getting stashed on the PS.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I don’t know that Brooks wouldn’t get poached. He has shown a lot. Conventional wisdom says they keep 4 RB at most. Maybe with Jones on IR to start the season, they’ll use that roster spot to keep 5. As much as I like Gaskin, I too would keep brooks over him. Also have to consider Wilson as a candidate for not making the team or IR since he hasn’t played at all so far.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

True, maybe they start Wilson Jr. On IR. The only thing with Brooks getting poached is that other team would have to guarantee him a spot on their 53 man roster. Not sure he’s shown enough yet to have someone do that. Would be curious to see how much he plays in this game; maybe they won’t showcase him too much.

  83. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

In my mind, if Achane is going to be healthy soon, you keep Mostert, Achane, Ahmed and Brooks. I like Jeff Wilson, but he’s never had a 1,000 yard season and never managed to get even 200 carries in a season. Mostert hasn’t either, but Mostert is so much faster than Wilson

Nice to have tough cuts to make at multiple positions

I think Wilson starts the season on PUP or IR in case of injury to others. Cutting him would not gain anything but a permanent roster spot. His base pay is all guaranteed this year and would only save 340K of cap. I think he is gone after this season though. We have a 2024 out clause and will clear 3 mil next year with a 782k dead cap.

I think it is a tight race between Gaskin and Brooks on who would fill Wilson’s spot. If it is Brooks, I fear Gaskin will end up on the Pats. lol

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed . He’s familiar with the offense. Brooks looks good, but it’s preseason and he’s primarily playing against backups .

The other issue with trading for Taylor is its picks and players, plus a monster contract. Our space is well over the cap for next season, and we also have a bunch of important pieces of our own to extend and re-sign next season. Yes, he would make us better, but I don’t know by how much.

  90. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think both Wilson’s are good as gone after 2023. We have 2024 out clauses on both of them. Cutting both of them after 2023 will clear 10.3 million off the 2024 cap with a dead cap of 1,782,500.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Definitely. Wilson Jr. Is very replaceable, and C Wilson isn’t coming anywhere close to earning the money he’s making.

  94. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I also think Crossen gets cut this year which will clear 3,155,000 this year and 3,245,000 in 2024. Cutting both Wilson’s and Crossen before 2024 season will clear 13,545,000 with only the 1,782,000 dead cap.

I think it will be a done deal. Unfortunately, it will only clear about 1/3 of our cap troubles next year.

Another person that I don’t want to lose is Ogbah. But we have an out clause in 2024 on him also. Designating him a post June 1 release will clear another 15,800,000 and only have a 2 mil dead cap in 24′ and 25′.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yeah, we can’t keep everyone. If Phillips continues to ascend and Chubb plays to his potential in Fangio’s D, then Ogbah will be a luxury we can’t afford.
