Roster mostly set, let the games begin!

The roster is just about set, although as we know, there will be shuffling with the bottom of the roster throughout the season. Let me start with the RB’s, and I have to say, I’m thrilled with the RB as it stands. We kept the 4 RB’s I wanted to keep, Mostert, Achane, Ahmed and Brooks. I feel that’s a good mix of players, Mostert a good all around back with speed and good receiving skills. Achane also brings tons of speed in his own right, and Ahmed is a slippery back who I feel has never looked better. Very happy we kept the big back from BYU Chris Brooks. He’s the banger, the big body that can run between the tackles. Brooks runs hard, and although we didn’t get Jonathan Taylor from the Colts, Brooks is a hard runner that won’t be asking for $12M per year anytime soon. FB Alec Ingold also received a nice extension, 3YR/$17.2M. We need Ingold, along with the front 5 to give our speedy RB’s room to run.

The WR room also shaped up like I had hoped, although I am surprised that Robbie Chosen didn’t make the cut. I was hoping Erik Ezukanma would make the 53, and he did. Hill, Waddle, Berrios, Wilson Jr. , Ezukanma, and Cracraft round out the receiving corps. I believe Berrios is really going to thrive in this offense, while teams will be protecting against Hill and Waddle. Wilson Jr, will also have opportunities, but Berrios’ ability to create space quickly and run after the catch quicks will keep him busy this season. Berrios will also be handling kick returns and punt returns, so he will be a very valuable player for us this season.

We weren’t able to come to a contract extension with DE/DT Christian Wilkins, but it seems as if both sides are on the same page and willing to delay the process of negotiating that extension after the season. The dollar amount of course can be debated, but Wilkins is a core piece of this defense, and if Fangio can wring out a little more opportunity for Wilkins to get to the QB this season, the money he wants might actually be a fair asking price. Wilkins brings it every week, has been a leader on this team and belongs on this team for the long term. I’m quite pleased that we were however able to lock up our other DE/DT Zach Sieler on a 3YR/$38.65M deal. The lunchpail guy got paid! The Dolphins are a little thin on DL depth, with only rookie DT Brandon Pili and DE Emmanuel Ogbah.

At LB, no surprises, the proven guys stay, and only one real question mark will be 2nd year LB Channing Tindall. Big things are expected from 3rd year LB Jaelan Phillips. Everyone expects a breakout season, I only hope the prognosticators are right. Some players just too much hype, I hope Phillips isn’t one of them. David Long will be the physical guy in this group, and underrated Jerome Baker just keeps keeping on. Will Bradley Chubb find his comfort zone in this defense? Chubb had double digit sacks in his rookie season in 2018 with the Broncos but has yet to see more than 8 sacks in a season since. Chubb could end up being a huge factor for this defense. If he can be a pass rushing terror, Phillips will no doubt feast as well. The LB depth is rounded out by familiar guys Andrew Van Ginkel and Duke Reilly.

In the secondary, we’re definitely a little thin, and this is a spot I expect there to be a lot of turnover in. X (Xavien Howard), and Eli Apple will start as the corners. Brandon Jones and Jevon Holland are the starting safeties. Kader Kohou will be the primary nickel back until Nik Needham, who is on the PUP is healthy enough to take the field. Kohou was excellent last season, an excellent find. The Dolphins finally parted ways with former 2020 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene, trading him to the Dallas Cowboys for 2021 2nd RD pick Kelvin Joseph. Joseph did not fare too well with the Cowboys, much like Iggy didn’t get it done here. It will be a fresh start for both players. Joseph is a long, lean CB at 6’1 192. Hopefully he can turn it around here in MIA with Vic Fangio. Will rookie Cam Smith make enough of showing to see legit playing time? He missed some preseason action which puts him a little behind the curve. At safety, DeShon Elliot, Elijah Campbell and “centerfielder” Verone McKinley III fill out the depth. The Dolphins signed Justin Bethel for CB depth, he played pretty well last season in some spot duty, and is a very good special teams player.Parry Nickerson rounds out the CB depth, he has played for 4 different teams in 4 seasons, the Jets, Jaguars, Packers and Vikings. The Dolphins make his 5th team in as many years. Again, the secondary is where I expect a fair amount of turnover.

OK, let’s get to the dreaded O-line. I know no one is happy here, especially the big green guy. Terron Armstead will anchor the line at LT, next to veteran Isaiah Wynn. Connor Williams will be back at C, he had a great season last year playing every-single-snap. Williams did have some snapping issues, and hopefully he can clean those up. We don’t need Tua chasing footballs over his head and getting mangled trying to recover the bad snap. One of our best OL draft picks in recent history, Robert Hunt returns at RG and Austin Jackson will start at RT. Jackson came in lean and ready to go, so we can only hope this is his best season. T Kion Smith, OG Lester Cotton, T Kendall Lamm and potential backup C Liam Eichenberg fill out the O-line depth. Cotton looked very good in limited action and could step in at G if Isaiah Wynn doesn’t play well enough to keep that spot locked up.

I think we all deep down know that if our starting QB Tua Tagovailoa is going to miss a few games, we’re gonna be in trouble. I’ll admit initially I was pleased with the Mike White signing, but he looked just awful in the preseason, especially in the red zone where his decision making was horrendous. He almost turned the ball over with extremely questionable throws nearly every red zone trip. 2nd year Miami Dolphins QB Skylar Thompson, the star of of the 2022 preseason was a dud in 2023. If anyone was expecting him to take step forward, it doesn’t look like that’s happening. We need our boy Tua to stay healthy, so that Jiu Jitsu falling stuff better keep him safe!

Now on to the next underwhelming unit. Tight End. I can only imagine where this group will be ranked in the NFL. Versatile blocker and occasional pass catcher Durham Smythe is the starter. Tyler Kroft, another solid blocking TE is next on the depth chart and surprising undrafted rookie from Campbell, Julian Hill. Our 6th RD pick, former WR Elijah Higgins didn’t make the 53 and was signed by the Arizona Cardinals. Maybe Julian Hill ends up being the surprise receiver of this group, who knows?

On special teams, K Jason Sanders returns for his 6th season and at P, we signed former NE Patriot Jake Bailey, who spent 4 seasons with the Patriots. Blake Ferguson returns as the Long Snapper and Braxton Berrios will be the primary KR/PR. Cedrick Wilson Jr., Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane and River Cracraft will round out the depth in the return game.

Overall, I’m really happy with the roster. The question marks are the O-line, backup QB, depth on the D-line and at least until Jalen Ramsey is healthy, depth at CB. Eli Apple doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence, so he will need to play well enough to stay on the field. We lost Keion Crossen to injury and he’s out for the season. Problem is, behind Apple is potentially Kader Kohou, Justin Bethel, Kelvin Joseph and Parry Nickerson. The depth is shaky, which is precisely why we brought in Jalen Ramsey. Best expectations for Ramsey would be late November, but I think December for actual playing time is more realistic. Even then, to expect him to came back and be the player he’s been his entire career coming back so soon after injury is a big ask. As I mentioned, I love the running backs, so glad Chris Brooks is in the mix. I’m a little concerned with how Achane was “rag dolled” and then injured, but I can’t wait to see him get some space. Brooks is unquestionably the sole physical RB in the group. Mostert, Ahmed and Achane are looking to run away from contact while Brooks welcomes it. I feel like our WR’s are very strong, love the addition of Berrios. The offensive line could be a pleasant surprise if Armstead can stay healthy, and Wynn and Jackson do their job. We’ll see if this star studded LB crew rise to the hype. If they do, we could be a top 10 defense for sure!

Great game to watch tonight, 7:30pm eastern, with some great draft prospects to keep an eye on. My pick will be FSU over LSU, not because they are the home team. Though playing at a “neutral site” which happens to be in Orlando, FL.

I pick them to win, but not only win, make the college football playoffs also.

They have to be returning more players (77) from last year’s team than any other team ranked in the top 20. Don’t know for sure but that is a lot, IMO. On top of that, they added 6-7 players through the transfer portal who were already ranked at the top of their groupings for their position in the nation and had a very good recruiting class as well.

BBM gonna have to be an FSU homer this year. Glad they don’t play ND this year and make me have to choose. lol

Does anyone know the extent of Ahmed’s injury? No concussion protocol so it must be a stinger. Makes me think he will be ready to go Sunday, if so.

Is anybody else somewhat concerned that our RB room is already a bit dinged up?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No because it’s a common occurrence across the league. When you play fantasy football you know these things.🤪

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes, but not long term. RB’s always get hurt, the important thing is none of these injuries are serious and none of these will affect them in the future. I just hope we can have everyone healthy for the opener against LA.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s what I’m talking about… we’re dinged up before we even play our first game. I, too, hope we can have everyone healthy for our opener.

  10. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

No, it’s not like we run with a bell-cow back and he’s injured… we run with RB by committee, but most are already dinged up!

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was just looking up FF rankings and on one site, Dolphins D is ranked #17. That’s pretty low for us, surprising.

I actually thought we had a lot of injuries this TC if combined with those who didn’t make it all the way back from last year.

Ramsey Wilson Campbell Needham Crossen Armstead Ahmed Achane Rob Jones Saubert Waddle White Phillips Connor Brandon Jones Trill and 6 or 7 who were waived injured.

Will be cool if Chris Brooks can make impact this year
Not real usual for a FA RB to come out of nowhere and be a top tier RB
You can see him unseating Jeff Wilson

And if he can log in meaningful ways laying time and mystery stays healthy – we will have a true thunder and lightning combo with achane contributing for some big plays

    Let go 🐬!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let’s wait and see Brooks and Achane in the regular season before we start having them as the main backs. Mostert is the starter. Ahmed is probably #2.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not that ourlads.com is the end all, but they have Achane as #2. As to the other point, lots of RB’s that were either late picks or undrafted have had success in the NFL. Raheem Mostert is one of them

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know but they haven’t played a regular season game yet. Mostert and Ahmed have and they were both undrafted.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you watch our running game system it’s predicated on movement, speed and unpredictability not pure power.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The base concepts are run the ball and out of the QBs hand quickly for chunk yards. High efficiency plays and take some deep shots. The playmakers have to make plays.🙂

I think People are underestimating our TE room.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There’s a difference between how people see TE production, we see things closer to how MM wants to use them, so naturally we see them for total worth and not receiving stats others do

    Choo choo get on! LOL

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – I think the underestimation is totally warranted. Maybe they will excel at pass blocking, but why would an outsider look at our TE room and think we have any real pass catching threat? Tyler Kroft has 42 catches total over the last 5 seasons, after having one season in ’17 where he had 42 receptions. Julian Hill is an undrafted rookie from a small school, and Smythe caught 15 passes last year. Is it possible these guys all do more than expected? Sure, but there’s no real reason to have high expectations.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The high expectations come from what we saw in the PS running the ball, as the TEs did better run blocking, than we’ve ever seen from the unit

After 2 PS games many had Hill making the 53 based on his blocking, slipping out to catch a few passes and his RAC

Gesicki caught most of his balls lined up off the line, we have EZ to replace him, he’s not going to make as many circus catches, but isn’t going down with the wave of a feather either

If our running game avgs about 120 yards per game at 4.5 per carry the TE room will have made a big contribution towards our O taking the next step

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the run blocking will better for sure, but TE’s in the NFL in 2023 are given high grades for receiving. I’m fine with Smythe, Kroft and Hill just bulldozing holes for our backs all season and only catching a pass here and there. Our offense is going to go through Hill, Waddle and probably Berrios and of course the run game.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Robbie Chosen was signed to our PS.

  20. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Mike E of course you are correct, but so is Steve.

Btw…my statement is pretty safe since our TE room is rated 32nd. I didn’t say they’d be top 10 … but top 20 would be good enough.

Thing is, all 3 CAN catch, and all 3 can get a little YAC. All 3 can run the whole TE tree. (Not the slot WR tree Gesicki ran) and they run crisp routes.

Smythe is very deceptive. Kroft is very experienced. And the kid has fresh legs and a hungry heart.

We have a true 6-deep WR room, so we have less need of a seam threat because Ced and Ezukanma can run those, and Connor is there to bring up if needed.

Meanwhile, the wear and tear on opposing ILBs and Safeties getting wham-blocked by our TEs who are 40-60 pounds heavier will take its toll.

Exactly. And this is why I asked if anybody was “somewhat concerned” regarding our dinged-up RBs, before game 1 of the regular season is even played.

So far, so good. Looks like Achane is ready to go.

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – I’m not worried about Jeff Wilson. Chris Brooks will get the carries that Wson would have gotten. I think we’re upgrading with Achane – Ahmed – Brooks

  29. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Brooks is going to get his touches. He is going to get his yards, he is going to take the job and earn the respect. He is going to get and take his shot before Achane does regularly. But it will come. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Brooks is the #4 RB, if he doesn’t play STs, not sure he’s even active week 1, think it would be a mistake, but…

If active they should give him a shot, don’t need Mostert used too much on the goal line

Mostert did bulk up, still don’t want him used like that

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With all the guys we had sitting out in camp, that are now back practicing, I have to wonder, if most were just cautionary

Armstead still not practicing, but when did he ever?

Other than Ramsey, we’re pretty healthy, Wilson’s injury may turn out to be a blessing in disguise with Brooks getting a shot

Needham and some other DBs should be back soon

By having some key guys out at least they had less time to get seriously hurt

I think our speed and some newness will be hard for teams to handle early on unless we’re unprepared.

We have talent on defense and now a top DC in Fangio is coaching them.

It’s difficult to imagine we’re not in the mix all season. That’s what I’m looking forward to. Make the season fun and have a chance.

I’m so looking forward to a mostly good to go team opening day. I don’t fear the Chargers in LA week one. Plenty of time to prepare for that. It’s a big AFC game that could play a factor down the road though.

    Good teams win games.🙂

The last thing I want to do is encourage political talk, but I saw this tweeted and it is so on point!

A British writer penned the best description of Donald Trump I’ve ever read:

“Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?”

A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:

    • Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.

    • You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?’ If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”

And I only read a few of the replies to this tweet but this made me laugh!

That’s the narrative our mainstream media wants to portrait, and I see the stupid people of the world eat it up hook line and sinker

LOL. I remember it started because I was reading about him being released by them and immediately signed by the Dolphins. Not a lot of positive comments about him by you guys and I was compelled to defend him! I met him at a cocktail party thing, Herd fundraiser, I think not long after he retired? I know it was the exact same day there was an earthquake in the eastern US. I always say, I met Chad and felt the earth move on the same day. Sadly, not for the same reason. 🥴

I did tell him I was an active participant on Omar’s blog. He had a big chuckle.
