Week 1 was quite a surprise for me. I expected the Dolphins offense to look good, but it was really the defense that I expected to shine, and until the end of the game when they sealed the victory, the defense was a huge letdown. Chargers running backs Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley combined for 208 yards rushing on 32 carries for a ridiculous 6.5 YPC. Ekeler is indeed one of the best in the game but both he and Kelley feasted. Ekeler had a long run of 55 yards. I’m pretty sure all of us thought David Long was an upgrade at ILB, but on opening day, Long played only 17 snaps and gave us 1 tackle. In contrast, Andrew Van Ginkel played a surprising 63% of the snaps at LB, and produced a modest 5 combined tackles. For additional contrast, former Dolphins LB Elandon Roberts started for the Steelers and played 43% of the defensive snaps and had 8 tackles, and 2 tackles for a loss. This an early disappointment, and something that we’ll need to keep an eye on.
The offense though was better than I could have hoped for. It’s been well documented how the Chargers shut down Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins offense last year during that horrific west coast trip that started with a beatdown in San Francisco and ended with a stymied offensive output against the Chargers who took away the short passing lanes, and the Dolphins at that time had no answers. This past Sunday however, the Dolphins had all the answers and absolutely shredded the Chargers defense to the tune of 536 yards, 466 of those yards through the air, compared to 145 yards on a paltry 10 completions out of 28 pass attempts. Tyreek Hill was unstoppable, and provided nearly half of the receiving yards with 215 yards receiving and 2 TD’s. Jaylen Waddle had a nice day as well, 4 receptions for 78 yards, but that pales in comparison to the monster day Hill had. We were running the football well, but basically stopped running, although the results say we did the right thing because the LA defense could not contain the passing game.
One game is not enough information to really identify what a team is all about. We know Head Coach Bill Belichick well, and we all know here that he will simply not allow Tyreek Hill to beat his defense. That’s what he does, his M.O. is to take away the thing you do best, and make you beat them a different way. Raheem Mostert has been practicing, so he’s likely to start, and the run game should get a boost from rookie De’Von Achane who has also been practicing and will play this Sunday night. You never know what the gameplan will be, but if I could conjure a guess, it would be that we will be running more than we did against the Chargers, and also that De’Von Achane will get his share of touches. With extra attention on Tyreek Hill, others will benefit, like Achae, Waddle and perhaps even Durham Smythe, who will see his former TE mate against our defense for the first time, Mike Gesicki. As far as the defense, I also expect a better effort against the Patriots, who don’t have top tier talent at the skill positions that the Chargers have, namely Herbert, Ekeler, Allen and Williams. Instead, it will be QB Mac Jones, WR’s DeVante Parker and Kennrick Bourne, big back Rhamondre Stevenson and TE’s Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki.
The Patriots hung in there opening day against a very good Philadelphia Eagles team. It was a close game, the Patriots came back from a 1st quarter 16 point deficit, but ended up losing 25-20. The Eagles defense contained Rhamondre Stevenson to just 25 yards on 12 carries, but Ezekiel Elliott had moderately more success, 29 yards on 7 carries. In general, the Patriots offense doesn’t scare opposing teams, but a Bill Belichick team is always a dangerous team, although the Dolphins have recently had Bill’s number, taking 4 of 6 games in the last 3 seasons, and more importantly, winning every game QB Tua Tagovailoa played in, 4-0. I’m sure the Patriots will try and disrupt the rhythm Tua has with his receivers, and if that’s the case, Tua may need to find secondary and tertiary targets, which is why I think there’s potential for Achane to have a fair amount of action Sunday night. Waddle, Berrios, Cracraft and Ezukanma should also see more action. This would be Achane’s first NFL action, so I should probably temper my enthusiasm for him, but if he’s healthy, this is what he’s here for.
It was frustrating seeing the defense gashed in the run game, and of course even more frustrating, for me at least, to see our vaunted pass rush neutralized nearly the entire game. At the end, we made the plays to seal the victory, but Wilkins, Davis, Sieler, Phillips and Chubb didn’t get to Herbert most of the game, and if not for absurdly gaudy offensive day, the Chargers 433 yards and 34 points would have been a really good offensive output. If this defense is going to be a top unit in the NFL, we’re going to have to better than last week’s effort. One other surprise on defense was S DeShon Elliott playing 100% of the defensive snaps. Clearly, S Brandon Jones is not where he needs to be yet, but Elliott rose to the occasion with 13 total tackles, 8 solo. CB Kader Kohou got the start and of course had the huuuuge sack on Justin Herbert that was nearly a safety. Kohou played 98% of the defensive snaps and has been a huge pickup for our team. Eli Apple played 74% of the defensive snaps, but it was clearly Kohou who is in the drivers seat. I’m curious to see if CB Cam Smith will get any defensive snaps, he played only special teams against the Chargers.
There are a few things I’d like to see this Sunday night against the Patriots. We know Terron Armstead is a scratch, he’ll be given at least one more week to heal up, which means T Kendall Lamm will play at least one more game. The offensive line was better than any of us could have hoped for, 45 pass attempts, ZERO sacks. That’s pretty much a shock if we’re being fair. I’d love to see that continue of course and I’d like to see more out of our running game, and that can include short passes to the RB’s either behind the line of scrimmage or beyond, but I want to see Mostert, Achane, Ahmed and even Ezuknama get some touches if the defense is doubling or even tripling Hill. These guys need to make the NE defense pay if they go all in on stopping Tyreek Hill. Mostly, I want to see the defense bounce back and look dominant, and not get pushed around in the run game and be ineffective getting to the QB. I want to see Tua remain upright making plays, and as mentioned, let’s the exciting rookie De’Von Achane get some touches and see what he can do!
GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Thank you, sir!
I sure agree with you on the D, but Fangio did address some of why the run game was not up to speed. He did blame himself. Hopefully, he gets the D ready for NE.
Nice write, Mike.
I can’t wait to see how this team comes out against our division rival. On paper, we’re the superior team. Hopefully the team is fired up for primetime and gives us a good show!
Thanks Mike. I think armstead is playing this week correct?
Nope, he’s definitely out
I really want to see us dominate the Pats in prime time. Like embarrass them. I will settle for an ugly win, but I want to come out, take the lead and never give it up. Just keep scoring, no matter what the Pats do on offense. I really hate it when you can tell the coach has taken his foot off the gas. We didn’t see that last week. (calling a deep pass with 9 secs left in the 1st half) Hopefully MM stays aggressive and piles it on.
Remember the league changed the tie breaker rules this year. Strength of victory is much more important than it used to be and we only have 2 net points right now. I would like to have like 30 net points Monday morning!
Nice article Mike! Thanks again for keeping things fresh!
Nice write, Mike.
Fangio said part of the problem with the run defense was we were in a lot of nickel. Hopefully we’ll clean that up regardless.
I can’t find it, but I read this morning that he is a scratch for Sunday. He was listed as DNP Tuesday and limited on Wed. He hasn’t practiced before his limited try on Wed since the preseason. I am pretty sure MM will “protect him from himself” because Lamm did so well.
I am not so sure we will see Achane play this week. We very well may go with the guys we went with last week. Team do not usually dress 5 running backs. Mostert, Ahmed, Brooks, Ingold. Those will be the four who dress IMO.

There are 4 games involving important AFC teams, not including ours, where the teams are 1-0 vs. 0-1, so if all of them reversed, that is 8 teams at 1-1.
If the Cowboys beat the jests (praying for Dak to go off with 300 passing),
and assuming the Titans lose to the Bolts, that’s 2 more 1-1 teams.
If we win, then we’re a game ahead of all 10 of our main rivals and even more considering tie-breakers to come.
In a year with so much AFC balance, this would be a very nice start to the season.
But we MUST beat the Cheats.
I haven’t seen anything that says Armstead is out for Sunday.
just read the article Mike E. …great job as always and you make a great point that this is what Achane is here for.
You provide a blue-print for what we could do if bellicheat tells his DBs to attack Hill at the LOS every play to bruise him up and then hold him at the 5-yard mesh every play, daring the refs to throw a flag every play. That’s the only way to restrict Hill, as no one can guard him fair and square.
Flipping the ball out to Mostert and Achane in the flat and hoping they can make a play is the way to get the yards that the D will steal from Hill. This will also get the ball out before Judon and the other pass rushers can get to Tua.
I was also encouraged by both Smythe’s and Ezukanma’s touches, and as you noted, they are also the key to moving the chains.
Go Dolphins.
I could swear I either read it or heard it somewhere that he was out this week.
Friday injury report not out yet.
https://www.miamidolphins.com/team/injury-report/
As of Wednesday morning I had to stop watching sports talk shows. Exhausting to watch teams placed in one of two categories after WEEK ONE: “in trouble” or “SB contender” smh. Most of my life, if we lost week one, it was “bad game, learn, get ready for next” … if we won it was “whew, good game, learn, get ready for next”. There simply isn’t enough data (results) from a 17 game season to support any claim. n = 1 … ugh.
I hope he coaches for another 3 years and doesn’t beat the record!
To me it’s not important as to whether Armstead plays or Lamm plays at this point of the season. If Armstead is at 60% now but can be at 80% with another week’s rest than Lamm should play. It’s a long haul, let Armstead get healthy and play the healthy guy now (Lamm)
Lamm played well last week, so I would not be worried about him, except that Judon is a beast.
The coaches will make that call based on how he looks and feels in practice today.
Are you sure it’s not up to me? 😛

Knock him off his routs. Jam him at the line. rough him up for the 1st 5 yards. It will take him out of the game.
I like Vic’s hat! Except for the new logo. That needs to go.
I wonder if the team wants to go back to the original.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz is reporting that the Jets have “inquired” about the availability of longtime NFL backup Chad Henne. Henne spent the last five seasons as the Kansas City Chiefs’ backup quarterback before retiring this offseason.

If you click on that (and granted you are logged in), you can enter your comment that way. This should work for both iPhone and Android.

Imagine if we get to defend Chad Henne as he start for the jests
If Chad Henne starts for the jets against us
What will the celebrations be like when he is sacked or intercepted

BBMike,
What game are ya looking most forward to watching tomorrow on a college Saturday?
Honestly, I’m going to be watching Deion’s Colorado! Quite the story, IMO!
Many top teams are still playing lesser opponents but right off the bat I would say your PSU at Illinois. Illinois lost a lot on offense and some good DB’s but their DL is stout with 2 players to watch.
DT Jer’Zhan Newton is a projected 1st rounder
DT Keith Randolph Jr. projected mid rounds
At the same time LSU at Mississippi State and KSU at Missouri.
Missouri also has a stud DT to keep an eye on.
Wyoming’s 2-0 Wyoming Cowboys are at 2-0 Texas Longhorns. I thought I would give that a look. Wyoming has another ILB/MLB to take a look at after Chad Muma left in Easton Gibbs.
I am looking forward to watch the next Colorado game as well.
Forgot, also going to catch some of Tennessee at Florida. It all depends on what’s going on at work though.
BTW, those 2 girls I posted in the music video are called Tigirlily Gold. They are sisters from North Dakota.
I want to see more of Tennessee LT John Campbell Jr. He transferred to TN from the Miami Hurricanes.
lol
MIAMI DOLPHINS
One up: Tua Tagovailoa, highest-graded QB of Week 1 (92.1)
Tagovailoa had his best game as a pro, earning a 92.8 passing grade after making six big-time throws. He did it on a 12.4-yard average depth of target, with head coach Mike McDaniel getting the most out of his quarterback.
One down: Jerome Baker, 38.9 PFF grade
Baker missed one tackle and finished with a 37.3 run-defense grade. He also allowed five catches for 69 yards in coverage.
Woot woot posting from the IPhone

I wonder if the weather is going to be nasty in NE Sunday night?
60s 5-10% chance of rain, wind to 7 mph. Sounds like great football weather. I googled. 🤓
Cool, I keep seeing those storms out at sea may not hit land in the NE but could cause some nasty weather. I feel like I’ve been hearing that for two weeks now.😳
————-
They waived Darius Rush? Wow, didn’t see that coming. I’d stash him on our PS, unless he was waived for off-the-field activities.
Run support
Looks like Phillips won’t be playing.
I can’t believe we just outright cut VK3… very odd move.
*VMK3
Do they have to do that to send him to the PS?
Probably because he’s behind Holland, Elliott, Jones and Campbell. Maybe Jones is ready for more snaps.
Winovich for the revenge factor after NE cut him.
That was a few years ago. I think it’s more about him being an edge guy and STs player like Goode. Seems to me Phillips won’t be playing. So we need depth on the edge.
We’ll likely see more of Ogbah than his 18 snaps on defense and 7 on STs. Then obviously Chubb opposite him.
Mike, is Armstead playing? I thought he practiced this week? I hope he plays
He’s questionable but he did practice yesterday.
PSU is turning into ‘Ball Hawk University’ today! 4 INTs and counting, now beginning the 4th QTR.
Mark my words, PSU RB Nicholas Singleton is going to be a name to remember. He’s only a sophomore, but once he declares for the NFL Draft, he’s going to be selected early.
He’s not Saquon Barkley, but he’s going to be the next big thing out of PSU.
In terms of a RB. He can run, he can catch, and he’s got the size to be a very good blocker.
Yep, he stood out to me a few times during the game.
I didn’t know Chase Winovich was on the Dolphins
We signed him after cut day.
Last week the Chargers had us in nickel most of the game and ran on us. Belichick is going to try to do the same thing, and until we show we can stop it, every team will do it.
Patriots don’t have the skill players and QB to force us into that much nickel
I agree with that but they will try it. I think they’ll test us going big too.
It was also week one when most top players have not played a lot of snaps in the PS. Now it’s the real deal.
Is #1 UGA going down today???
Anyone know the Dolphins youtube channel was doing this?
I am re-watching the game again like probably number three I am even enjoying the halftime show where there are all slobbering all over our offense. 😂
Boy on this one drive, they brutalized Xavien Howard with bullshit pass interference calls
At least two were very questionable. One was fair that I saw.
The opening drive score by the chargers was a gift from the referees.
We also went right down the field on them first drive with two bad snaps, the second one costing us possession on their 6 yard line. They had no answer for us the entire game.
Hope that continues
Tua can be unstoppable, if someone isn’t fucking something up around him
Pretty much how they always cheat for the home team, if they’re any good
Tyreek Hill he’s as quick as a hiccup
You don’t stop him by accident, you’d better game plan and hope it slows him down
Maybe that other teams O is just that good
https://sports.yahoo.com/hern-ndez-hey-brandon-staley-020314169.html
That’s true too.🙂
Kader Kohou is a bad ass find
The first play after the Kader Kohou sack on the 1 yard line is the most awesome pass of the game. I play the exact same play every time I play Madden lol.
The difference is Belichick is a better defensive mind than Staley who still hasn’t built a good defense and that’s how he cut his teeth as a coach.
LOL at Alabama only up 10-3 on South Florida in the 4th. Way to bounce back.
Alabama with a last second TD. Whatever, we saw you struggle all game Saban.
4th and 2 on the last td drive Harry Highschool, from USF, rushes up to the LOS and gets called for offsides, if I was an HC I’d tell the D on day 1 every year if you jump on 4th and 5 or less, the next practice you won’t be participating just running until you puke
What an FN idiot
yep
Week 2 Hype video
Cool and thanks for that other video!
Bama’s QBs suck, so they do too
Sobering. Nothing like wearing a GoPro in combat.
I have to say and I’m totally guilty of it. I often forget Russia is still invading the Ukraine. One of the reasons is because this was projected as a 3 week war, Russia would overwhelm them in no time. Something else is going on here.
It’s been going on for about 19 months as the world watches carnage and destruction.
Lots of people are profiting off of it. Most people aren’t close to it so they lose empathy. It’s not in my neighborhood. Move on with our lives.
A lot of bad calls and no calls in the TN/FL game all in favor of UF.
Something else is going on here.
———-
I agree
Keep your eyes on Dubai and other developing cities of the modern world. Follow the money, and war is good for business. Sad but true.
Nice summary Mike. Agree – 1st game was nothing like expected and not sure Pats game will be either. I’m also not sure anyone can take away Hill. I absolutely want to see us run more tho. Ni good trying to start Mid-december.

PATRIOTS SCOUTING REPORT
The Patriots were the forgotten team when everybody was handicapping the AFC East race before the start of the season, a rather unusual position for Bill Belichick and his team to find themselves considering they ruled the division for so long. While they weren’t able to upset the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles in their season opener at Gillette Stadium, the Patriots certainly were very competitive and gave themselves a chance to win the game at the end after quickly falling behind 16-0. The addition of former Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien as offensive coordinator no doubt figures to help third-year quarterback Mac Jones and the defense again should be solid under Belichick’s supervision, but whether that’s going to be enough for the Patriots to return to the playoffs remains to be seen.
——————————————————————-
THE BIGGEST REASON THE DOLPHINS WILL WIN …
Anybody who watched the season opener at SoFi Stadium will know the answer to that question: How do you contain Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins passing game? The L.A. Chargers certainly had no answers, with Tua Tagovailoa passing for 466 yards, 215 of those to Hill. The Dolphins also could be looking at facing the Patriots without their best cornerback, Jonathan Jones, or at the very least have to face him at less than 100 percent. On the other side, the Patriots’ massive injury issues on the offensive line could make it a lot easier for the Dolphins defense to rebound after a disappointing performance against the Chargers.
——————————————————————-
THE BIGGEST REASON THE DOLPHINS WILL LOSE …
It’s really difficult to look at this matchup and find a lot of reasons to think the Dolphins might not win this game, though we obviously always have to give Bill Belichick his proper respect and think that maybe he’ll come up with a way to slow down the Dolphins passing game. And it also might be too much to expect the Dolphins offense to be as sharp as it was in the season opener. The Dolphins’ inability to stop the run against the Chargers also is worrisome because the Patriots have been known to be able to run the ball through the years.
FINAL DOLPHINS-PATRIOTS PREDICTION
The Dolphins became the betting favorites to win the AFC East in some places following their win at SoFi last Sunday combined with the Jets losing Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen losing four turnovers, and this is a great opportunity to validate that new respect. The Dolphins offense truly looked dynamic against the Chargers and it’s really difficult to envision any defense being able to shut it completely down at this time. So then it becomes an issue of whether the Patriots offense can keep up, and it’s also difficult to see that with all their injury issues on the offensive line. The combination just looks too promising for the Dolphins, so it says here the Dolphins will start off 2-0 for a second consecutive year. Dolphins 27, Patriots 23

Hopefully, this posts…an interview with TH on last game…
It’s about manifestation…
What’s that bandage on his leg? WTF!?
It’s probably on there because he burned so many DBs last week.
Phillips traveled with the team, so hopefully he plays. I know, I know, I’ve been on him like white on rice. 😄
Leave him alone Mike!!!!!!!!!
The D obviously needs to get figured out, and quick. I’m hoping Fangio can begin to right that ship tonight. The Offense can hopefully keep clicking, there’s no reason to believe they can’t. You’d better believe Belichick will be up to the task of scheming against our O, I hope that MM can win that chess match.
All kidding aside Mike, Chubb deserves our wrath ten times more than Phillips. We gave up a first and a big contract to him- he needs to start making impact plays. Like tonight. Strip sack where someone returns for a TD.
^
Bri – I can agree with you on Chubb, but no prognosticators are saying Chubb will be the DPOY.
Interesting AP article by Teresa M Walker, “NFLPA renews call for natural grass.”
ANOTHER player safety issued ignored by the NFL!
lol at all this made up outrage at the rule saying a fumble out the back of the endzone is a TB.
Last week I ordered a cheap smart tv to add to my setup for Sundays. I was in a hurry and didn’t research it. The thing was wifi only. It didn’t have a single port out the back except for an optical audio out for a soundbar.
No ports? I didn’t even know that was a thing, lol. I gave the dumb thing away to one of my kid’s friends and got one that actually has use.
Do i have to stream NBC these days to get tonight’s game? OMFG.
It’s ESPN and ABC in my area
Mike,
I haven’t seen anyone predict Phillips as DPOY, but I’m sure did it as a dark horse so they can pontificate that they were right. He’s a pretty solid player, and is contributing to get better. Chubb is basically invisible for long stretches of the game. I’m a hell of a lot more down on him.

Phillips has been getting a lot of hype Bri, not only by the FLA reporters, but even Peter Schrager on GMF on the NFL channel. That being said, it’s not his fault he’s getting all this hype, but you look at the kid and it’s realistic to expect big things. He should easily be a double digit sack guy and it’s surprising/disappointing that he hasn’t yet done that
