2023 Season – Game 4 – Dolphins @ Bills

It’s only the 4th week of the NFL season, but this matchup against our division rival Buffalo Bills is quite an interesting matchup. The Bills, despite having a 2-1 record have allowed and NFL 2nd best 11.7 PPG. On the flip side, the Miami Dolphins offense have scored an NFL leading 43.3 PPG, mostly due to the 70 point output last week against the Denver Broncos. What makes this matchup so fascinating to me, the Dolphins defense was supposed to be an improved unit, perhaps even a top unit, while the Bills were expected to take a step back after losing LB Tremaine Edmunds in FA to the Chicago Bears. So far, the Bills are just a hair behind the Cleveland Browns who have allowed an NFL low 10.7 PPG, while the Vic Fangio Dolphins unit has allowed 23.7 PPG good for a below average 20th in the NFL. So something has to give here, with the NFL best offense against very close to the best NFL defense. Oh, by the way, the Bills are 2nd in the NFL in scoring, right behind our Dolphins at 30.3 PPG. Dolphins fans who are looking at this game as an easy Dolphins win simply aren’t looking at this game realistically. The last 3 meetings have been decided by 3 points or less.

One of the most surprising changes in the Buffalo Bills offense is the return of their rushing attack. We all know how dangerous QB Josh Allen is rushing the football, but last year’s 2nd RD pick, James Cook has 267 yards, while QB Josh Allen has just 89 yards rushing. Perhaps even more of a turnaround, the Dolphins rushing attack has been even more impressive, no doubt mostly due to the offensive output against the Broncos last week. While the Bills have 448 yards rushing, the Dolphins have 565 yards rushing, and the 15 lbs of muscle that Raheem Mostert added are paying dividends, as Mostert has 240 yards rushing and an eye opening 6 TD’s. The debut of rookie De’Von Achane was off the charts, 208 yards on just 19 carries for an absurd 10.9 YPC. Passing is not quite as even. Josh Allen has a pedestrian 90.3 passer rating, in large part due to his 5 TD’s and 4 INT’s with 728 yards passing. On the flip side, QB Tua Tagovailoa has a 121.9 QBR with 8 TD’s and only 2 INT’s and 1024 yards passing.

As you all know, I just hate when our players get caught in the hype machine, and our young 3rd year LB Jaelan Phillips has been absolutely crushed by it. It appears as if Jaelan Phillps will miss the Buffalo game, and it looks likely that C Connor Williams may also miss this contest with a groin injury. Williams still has a chance to play, and although LT Terron Armstead only logged a limited practice yesterday, he’s likely to play. Unfortunately, this is the wrong week to have anyone on this O-line out, especially considering how well this unit has performed. Good news is WR Jaylen Waddle has been cleared from concussion protocol and got in a full practice yesterday. If Connor Williams can’t go, Liam Eichenberg will likely play C, and while his snaps are more accurate than his predecessor Connor Williams, we all know his blocking hasn’t been up to snuff. Like I said, bad week to make O-line substitutions.

While the Dolphins were pouring it on with a record breaking 10 offensive TD’s last week, The Bills defense pounded Commanders QB Sam Howell all day long to the tune of 9 sacks, 4 INT’s and 1 forced fumble and fumble recovery. Truth is, if we’re being honest, I know I expected a much better defense here in Miami with Vic Fangio. It’s also very early in the season, we haven’t yet completed a 1/4 of the season and it can definitely take time for a scheme to take hold. It’s not that the defense has been awful, it just hasn’t been better than last year, which in and of itself is a disappointment. The Bills have 12 sacks, our defense has 8, not a huge disparity, and much like our offensive numbers are skewed by last weeks Broncos game, the Bills are defensive numbers are aided by their dominant game against the Commanders.

To be clear, it’s still very possible that C Connor Williams plays, he did log a limited practice yesterday, so I wouldn’t rule him out. It’s just that you don’t want to exacerbate an injury any further and lose that player for an extended period of time, but if he can go, as I previously mentioned, this is not the week for an O-line substitution. For some bad news, both WR’s River Cracraft (shoulder) and Erik Ezukanma (neck) both did not practice, but I remind you that Jaylen Waddle will be suiting up. This means opportunities for Berrios who has already been wonderful, and Robbie Chosen who caught his first TD last week in a Dolphins uniform. Our old friend AVG, Andrew Van Ginkel has played so well this season, and surely has had a much larger role in this defense, both week 1 where he played inside, and then of course last week because of Jaelan Phillps injury. I would like to point out something that concerns me, our 2 top tacklers thus far this season are DB’s. Safeties Jevon Holland (33), and DeShon Elliott (22) are tops, and not too far behind are CB’s Kader Kohou (16) and Xavien Howard (15). I would think this is not a good trend, and hopefully once the Fangio defensive scheme takes hold, this will even out.

I really don’t know what to expect, although I would be surprised if this was an offensive shootout. I feel like these divisional games are much more measured and careful, and although last year’s playoff game was a 34-31 shootout of sorts, I think the scores will be lower. There’s a lot on the line for such an early season matchup, but the Bills don’t want the Dolphins to have a 2 game advantage on them, and the Dolphins would like nothing more to potentially be the only undefeated team in the NFL and also hold a 2 game edge on their division rival Bills, who have won the division each of the last 3 seasons. I expect us to try and run the ball often, and don’t expect another 300 + yards rushing for the Dolphins. Josh Allen loves playing against us, he owns us, he’s 9-2, but more importantly, 6-0 at home in Buffalo. For perspective, I’ll remind you that our last 3 games against the Bills have been decided by 3 points or less (34-31), (32-29), and a Dolphins victory (21-19). All I know is this is MUST WATCH TV!

Herd – Joe Rose was saying this morning that he thinks the Dolphins may rest Williams with his groin injury. He was also limited in practice. Just something to watch

  7. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The keys to the game are suppressing James Cook and Connor Williams being healthy enough to play well and long enough for us to get a nice lead.
(and not letting Diggs take over the game)

We need more tackles by Wilkins and Sieler and Long instead of giving up 6-8 yards before Holland and Kohou must come up to make the stops.

With Eich at center we cannot get the move blocks on the ILBs that spring Mostert and Achane on those inside runs.

    Here you go Mike

I hear you on risk of further injury
But if you need your guys for one game – it’s this one
Can’t expose Tua to the Bills pass rush

We have Carolina and Giants next 2 weeks
I would push through the injuries if possible

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Man, I don’t want to Karma us by looking too far ahead, but if we can squeak out a win against Buff away we have a very good chance of being 6-0 going into Philly.

  14. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

This is still just one game.
You can’t fall very far behind with one road loss to a top 5 team.
If it’s a loss, then we are 3-1
with two teams we should beat before our next huge test.

We have the Bills in Miami later, so we can even that out.
They have a loss in division to the jest.
That’s way more costly, and I doubt seriously we’ll have one of those.

      Freakin’ love our coach

  18. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Here’s a look at three of Garrett’s predictions for Week 4:

    1. Bills hold the Dolphins under 30 points. “The Bills have a pass defense with the best touchdown-to-interception ratio allowed (two touchdowns to seven interceptions) and the lowest passer rating allowed (54.0) in 2023. Their nine takeaways, 30 points off turnovers and seven interceptions are also the best in the league. Head coach Sean McDermott’s defense has also shown a propensity to make opposing quarterbacks’ days miserable by constantly getting their face. The Bills win their eighth consecutive home game against Miami and send the Dolphins offense back to the world of mortals.”

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

NOPE I WILL GUARANTEE 100% THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!

Why? Because the streak is only 6 games, they can’t win two games in one try! That part is wrong, so is the rest! Dolphins win with a two score lead!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Players who are injured outside of football — perhaps working out on their own in the offseason or doing a recreational activity — or have a long-term illness not associated with playing, are placed on this list.Jul 28, 2023

  28. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Williams being listed as questionable, instead of doubtful or out, is a good sign.

I tend to agree with MF13 that losing our #3 ranked center to be replaced with Eich, who seems to suck at everything, isn’t ideal, lol.

I think we can get it done with either guy, but I’d rather see our best 5 out there against a strong interior pass rush from the Bills.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree with wanting to have your starting center playing, but why worry about Eichenberg until he proves he’s a problem at center?

If the coaches thought he was a liability why is he on the team? This staff has proven they know how to coach OL and blocking schemes.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s also good to see Ahmed is close to returning.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No rush for him, with Mostert, Achane, Brooks and Ingold though.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Totally, I don’t expect him to play on Sunday for that reason. Give him another week to heal. I just thought when he got injured he was going to be out half the season, since they were saying it looked like a significant groin injury.

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have both Mostert and Achane in my other FF league. I’ve been on the fence as to whether to play both of them this week, I also have Zack Moss. My thinking is Achane may just get a few more touches on offense with Ezukanma and Cracraft out. Not sure how sound that is, but I’m running with it. I also have Jonathan Taylor, but obviously he’s not active until next week.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I have Mostert and Taylor as well. I think Achane is going to be in the mix every week now. Wouldn’t be surprised if we dial up some special routes for him this week. He’s an excellent receiver.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

For fantasy football, regarding Achane and Mostert, my advice would be to completely disregard anything I have to say on the matter of who to start/play.

So I’d say start Mostert and sit Achane.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m starting Mostert no matter what. I have 2 flex positions in this league, so I have . . .

        WR Amon Ra St. Brown
        WR Calvin Ridley
        RB Bijan Robinson
        RB Raheem Mostert
        FLEX WR Zay Flowers
FLEX RB De’Von Achane or Zack Moss

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m starting Mostert too, he leads the league in TDs.🙂

  30. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Both McDaniel and the OC have said that
Eich got some good experience against the Broncos,
but there is a lot to clean up.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s expected and there are concerns with him, but until he shows he’s not good enough I’m not going to worry about it. I didn’t even realize he was in the game last week until the end when I saw him out there. I thought it was because it was a blowout and we took starters out.

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, Jonathan Taylor is reportedly healthy and able to pass a physical. Now we need to find out his status with the Colts or does he get traded? There will only be 8 games he can play in FF. We need him to start playing week 5.😳

It may sound hyperbolic or downright crazy, but I think the outcome of this game is going to come down to the quality of play of two guys who never touch the ball. Hold your bowel, it’s going to spasm here, Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. If they can play “good enough” and slow down the Bills prowbowl quality players just enough then I think Tua and the SpeedDeamons will put up enough points to win this one. If they play poorly I fear for our odds of winning and for Tua’s health.

Eich needs to identify the Defenses properly, snap the ball well and then reacquire his man and execute his block in less than a second. (Well not the identify and call the line play but he has no time on that either)

I have this as a close low scoring game with turn overs by both teams. A coin toss game. What is McDaniel’s record on the coin toss again?

We also need a MLB/ILB with pass rushing skills as well as run stopping force who is not a liability in coverage. (a la Micah Parsons).

Injuries and FA losses will determine any other holes that may develop during and after the season.

About 10 other stations throughout the Midwest also did that.

    Folks,

Don’t get too enamored with our Offensive production to date. Why? Other Offenses are already imitating us, and we have 3 games of tape for opposing DCs to break down.

Yeah, we may have put up a ’70-burger’ on the unsuspecting Broncos, but Sean McDermott has certainly broken down our film on how to best counter us.

  80. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If I’m Sean McDermott, I’m playing our Phins TIGHT to the LOS. That means DBs NOT playing 10-yards off from the LOS and jamming our WRs. If Tua gets the ball out in less than 2.2 seconds, he’ll be forced to throw an INT. And if we try to run the ball, we’ll run into their wall of Defenders.

What’s more, their DF7 is going to bring major pressure… a HUGE test for our O-Line tomorrow.

IF we can pass this test tomorrow — in Buffalo — SKY is our limit!!!

I’m hoping the difference between DCs
figuring out how to beat us this year
versus what they did to us last year is
    1) our new-found run game
    2) Isaiah Wynn
    3) shhh Austin Jackson
    4) our skill positions, assistant coaches, Tua, Tyreek, and our OL
knowing this offense way better in year 2.

Bringing everyone up leaves you susceptible to a big run too. You get space and break through you’re gone. There’s no one defense that will stop our offense, it takes a great deal of execution as well, and failure for us to find an answer

Hey, someone make sure Jamaal Bowman is not at the game tomorrow. If the Dolphins take an early lead, he might pull a fire alarm to change the momentum. I hear he is good for that.

We are not an intentionally 1 dimensional offense like we were last season. Our o-line was worse and we had a rookie HC where everyone was 1st year in the system. McDaniel couldn’t even get the plays in on time in some games. We are improved in every facet this year save for special teams. There would have to be something completely weird to happen for us to lose this game.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The biggest issue on STs is Sanders. He can kick the ball to the moon then miss big kicks at crucial times. Even Xpts. We don’t get blocked punts and our coverage is pretty solid. Getting beat on a KR for a 99 yard TD up 63-13 is not the norm.😂

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I had Madden auto reorder my Dolphins roster before I went through and tweaked it and now on kickoff it’s Bailey instead of Sanders. I’ve left it that way because at least in the game he’s much better at kickoff then Sanders is. 😂

Soooooo nervous for this game. Buffalo needs this game more than we do right now, but we don’t want to be in a position going into the last game of the year where we have to beat them to win the division. Win today, we are two games up in them in the standings and the division. That would be a good place to be.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

If they “need it”more maybe causes them to press and make mistakes.

      • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Does that count as pressure? 😂🤣😂🤣

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Probably more pressure than running by the QB and not even touching him!

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I hope so Rock- maybe Allen has one of those mistake prone games he tends to have from time to time, but he has murdered us since he came into the league. We haven’t won in Buffalo in 7 years, let’s end that shit today!!!!!

  93. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If our defense plays a good game, not even a great game, I don’t see McDaniel letting this team beat us with their defense. I think we can run the ball well enough now that we don’t have to try to beat them passing.
