2023 Season – Game 6 – Panthers @ Dolphins

The winless Carolina Panthers at 0-5 come to Miami to take on the 4-1 1st place Miami Dolphins this Sunday, A.K.A Fest Day! This is the best Dolphins team we’ve seen in some time. The offense is incredible, although we have lost rookie sensation RB De’Von Achane for a few weeks as he was placed on IR this week, meaning he’ll miss at least 4 games until he’s eligible to return the week of November 19th against the Raiders. Incidentally, Jeff Wilson Jr. is eligible to return from the PUP list but it has yet to be determined if Wilson will be active. RB Salvon Ahmed and Chris Brooks will most likely share reps with Mostert, with Mostert getting the majority of the touches.

I think the majority of us have a lot of positive feelings with this team. The Buffalo game was a sobering beat down, but the team came back strong against the beleaguered NY Giants. The defense especially made their presence felt last week. In place of Jaelan Phillips, backup LB Andrew Van Ginkel has been stellar. He has made his absence tolerable, although it would be great to have both og them available. Jaelan Phillps logged in a limited practice Wednesday, along with other limited participants WR Tyreek Hill, OG Robert Jones, RB Raheem Mostert, RB Jeff Wilson Jr., and nice to see the return of DB Nik Needham, one of my faves. CB Xavien Howard (veteran rest), FB Alec Ingold (foot), and OC Connor Williams (groin), did not practice. Ingold has said he’s playing Sunday, but Williams is one to keep an eye on, and maybe a late decision.

The Dolphins are the #1 passing team with 1681 yards. The Dolphins are also the #1 rushing team with 929 yards. That’s crazy! This offense, with the exception of the 2nd half of the Bills game has been nearly unstoppable. On defense however, it’s a different story. The Dolphins have allowed the 12th most passing yards, and the 15th most rushing yards. Not terrible, but not championship level either. Vic Fangio may have the Dolphins defense turning the corner, although even a strong showing against the Panthers will still leave the question as to whether this defense, and team in general, can play well against one of the better teams, like the Philadelphia Eagles. We’ll play them the following Sunday, and they will be a better gauge as to where this team is heading.

It’s a shame the Festers won’t get to see RB De’Von Achane who just eats up yardage so quickly, averaging an outrageous 12.1 yards per carry. I’m not talking 5-10 carries, it’s 38. Raheem Mostert is also having a great year rushing and is averaging a whopping 5.4 yards per carry, which is less than half of the magic man, De’Von Achane, but still impressive. We will get to see Tyreek Hill, who has also been magical this season. Hill has 651 yards receiving and is averaging 18.1 YPR, crazy considering all the extra attention he receives. Jaylen Waddle has 245 yards receiving, 14.4 YPR. Braxton Berrios has been great getting open finding soft spots in the zones or just beating coverage to get open.

The Panthers will be showing off their rookie QB Bryce Young who is having a decent rookie season. Young has been sacked 12 times so far this season. Young has 750 yards passing with 5 TD’s and 4 INT’s and a 77 QBR. In contrast, Tua has 1614 yards, with 11 TD’s and 5 INT’s and a stellar 111.9 QBR. It would be nice to have a healthy Jaelan Phillips back, but it’s still unclear as to whether he will suit up. In any case, AVG is on fire right now, so this defense is going to bring it whether Phillips is there or not. I do hope we activate Nik Needham, but I think we have until the 29th to activate him, so it’s probably not happening this week.

No matter what happens at the game itself, this is a special time getting together with a great group. It’s such a pleasure to see you all each year, and of course, we’re thankful for Stanger’s hospitality, Chef Warren, communications man Hulk, transportation man Toba, and everyone who attends and makes it such a special time. It will be great to finally meet Herd, looking forward to that! Looking forward to meeting up again and having a great time while we’re together. Cheers!

Good news on a lot of injured players.🙂

Holland in a red jersey, so he’s moving through protocol, but not out of it yet. Tomorrow will likely tell if he will be cleared to play this weekend.

We can survive against the Pets if Holland needs to sit another week.

I’ll be surprised if Ramsey plays this game, other than maybe getting his feet wet with a few snaps.

So were we seeing some gamesmanship from Tua yesterday, hinting that Hill might miss some significant time? Love it

I know he was raw coming out of college, but you always have to wonder at a guy who underperforms, then suddenly plays lights out in a contract year. Hopefully, he’ll continue to be motivated and a good player after he gets his contract.

This is his first second year in an offense and he’s a young guy. His arrival looks to be on time and the good thing is we know now that he can do it and not have to guess for next year.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Injuries and trying to find a position. He’s been better at RT than he was on the left side. Also the coaching we have now is superior to what we had before.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Hopefully all that is the case and he continues to be a good player for us.

I know there was a lot of talk about what great shape he was in coming into this year compared with years past. Why this year? Did it take a few years for him to build his body into NFL form? or did he put more effort into the offseason because it’s a contract year…shrug…hopefully the former.

He’s been a completely different player this year, and that is a good thing for us…as long as he continues to put the work in after he gets paid.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jackson started off last year playing well but got hurt and missed most of the season.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, I’ve heard the ‘He started off playing well last year’ line. But the truth is, we only heard that he looked good in camp and preseason and ran with that.

We don’t actually know how good he was actually playing in real games last year because he only played 14 snaps of the 1st game of the season before getting injured, then only played one more time in november before getting injured again.

  5. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

In regards to the Fins needing to beat a team with a winning record- we only face 1 team with a winning record (standings as of today) in our next 7 contests, lol.

  6. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m not trying to bash Jackson; he’s been real solid at RT for us this year. I just hope he isn’t one of those guys that gets up for contract years and is mediocre at best in other years.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We’ve already got one anchor weighing us down for 2 more years at LT.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Maybe I shouldn’t call him an anchor; I’m just pissed off he came into the season injured and hasn’t given us anything yet. If he’s there for our playoff run and into the playoffs, he’ll be worth the money.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m focused on this season only. We have no idea what the offseason will be like.

  8. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Anyone here watched Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix? I thought it was pretty good. It was created by Mike Flannagan, the guy who did the new Haunting of Hill House. If you liked Haunting of Hill House, you’ll probably like Fall of the House of Usher.

It’s basically Poe’s Usher story fleshed out, and Flannagan uses a slew of other Poe works (loosely) woven throughout the fabric of the series to tell the story of the House of Usher. I thought it was really interesting and a solid piece of work.

Isn’t Austin Jackson the one who had his leg bones drilled out to donate bone marrow to save his sister’s life?

  10. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Cav, I don’t think the way this team is currently constituted you can let up because you got paid for what I see you have to produce or you won’t be on the field,
    Everything is different now !😁🐬💪

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Absolutely agreed that if you don’t produce and work you won’t see the field. I also agree with what you said above about character. I don’t see Jackson getting paid and then quitting. I’m not attacking his character either. I’m talking about high level dedication. He wasn’t in great shape last year, he came in in great shape this year. He looked like a different person physically because he clearly put a lot of work into his body this offseason.

If he doesn’t maintain that high level next offseason, maybe he comes in less ideal shape like last year and gets injured again, or isn’t as effective, etc. It’s hard to keep that level of discipline- especially for the big boys. And for guys that size, their level of fitness often plays a huge role in their effectiveness. I’m just saying he’s different this year, and I hope he keeps it up after he gets paid.

Heck, maybe if he doesn’t get injured last year, we see a similar performance, or maybe if he came into the season in better shape last year, he doesn’t get injured. It’s all speculation, obviously.

And maybe I’m just spinning wheels; it was really just a one off thought that I decided to continue to pursuing my point on once you guys started responding, lol.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Hey man I hear ya but it’s nice to see guys we’ve invested in start to produce and I do tend a to be more rah rah than maybe realistic but I trust the make up of this team. I like where we’re going. Truly for the first time since the 90’s.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m with ya. We’re definitely going in the right direction. And I am not looking to spread rain when things are looking ☀️

It was just a random thought the post on how good he’s been produced. All that stuff aside, I’m also feeling better about this team than I have in 20+ years. 😎

So I was in Rhode Island visiting my new grand daughter and I’m in the airport and I go in this Patriots gear store. We’re the only customers in there, so I yell out to the guy at the register “you got any Dolphins stuff?” And he says “no, but I bet it would sell faster than this stuff these days.”

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I mention Austin Jackson doing that as an explanation as to why he was in a weakened state as he did that right before his first season. Might’ve set him back a bit plus he was only 20 years old. I think he’s been growing into manhood. He came to spring practice this year with a serious game face and in the best conditioning of his life.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh, that’s actually a very fair point, Naples. I’m pretty sure he did the bone marrow thing before the draft, which was a few years ago.

Dolphins are planning for CB Jalen Ramsey to make his return Sunday from the knee injury that he suffered this summer, per sources. Ramsey now is expected to be back on the field three months after his knee surgery, with his Dolphins’ debut coming vs. the Patriots.

Right?!! The way I see it, we should have beaten the Eagles with 3 starting O-Linemen out, X and Ramsey out, and Achane out… had it not been for the Zebras putting their thumb on the scale. 😡

After retiring last November, the 29-year-old Martinez got his release from Las Vegas last week and is looking to make a comeback.
