2023 Season – Game 6 – Panthers @ Dolphins

The winless Carolina Panthers at 0-5 come to Miami to take on the 4-1 1st place Miami Dolphins this Sunday, A.K.A Fest Day! This is the best Dolphins team we’ve seen in some time. The offense is incredible, although we have lost rookie sensation RB De’Von Achane for a few weeks as he was placed on IR this week, meaning he’ll miss at least 4 games until he’s eligible to return the week of November 19th against the Raiders. Incidentally, Jeff Wilson Jr. is eligible to return from the PUP list but it has yet to be determined if Wilson will be active. RB Salvon Ahmed and Chris Brooks will most likely share reps with Mostert, with Mostert getting the majority of the touches.

I think the majority of us have a lot of positive feelings with this team. The Buffalo game was a sobering beat down, but the team came back strong against the beleaguered NY Giants. The defense especially made their presence felt last week. In place of Jaelan Phillips, backup LB Andrew Van Ginkel has been stellar. He has made his absence tolerable, although it would be great to have both og them available. Jaelan Phillps logged in a limited practice Wednesday, along with other limited participants WR Tyreek Hill, OG Robert Jones, RB Raheem Mostert, RB Jeff Wilson Jr., and nice to see the return of DB Nik Needham, one of my faves. CB Xavien Howard (veteran rest), FB Alec Ingold (foot), and OC Connor Williams (groin), did not practice. Ingold has said he’s playing Sunday, but Williams is one to keep an eye on, and maybe a late decision.

The Dolphins are the #1 passing team with 1681 yards. The Dolphins are also the #1 rushing team with 929 yards. That’s crazy! This offense, with the exception of the 2nd half of the Bills game has been nearly unstoppable. On defense however, it’s a different story. The Dolphins have allowed the 12th most passing yards, and the 15th most rushing yards. Not terrible, but not championship level either. Vic Fangio may have the Dolphins defense turning the corner, although even a strong showing against the Panthers will still leave the question as to whether this defense, and team in general, can play well against one of the better teams, like the Philadelphia Eagles. We’ll play them the following Sunday, and they will be a better gauge as to where this team is heading.

It’s a shame the Festers won’t get to see RB De’Von Achane who just eats up yardage so quickly, averaging an outrageous 12.1 yards per carry. I’m not talking 5-10 carries, it’s 38. Raheem Mostert is also having a great year rushing and is averaging a whopping 5.4 yards per carry, which is less than half of the magic man, De’Von Achane, but still impressive. We will get to see Tyreek Hill, who has also been magical this season. Hill has 651 yards receiving and is averaging 18.1 YPR, crazy considering all the extra attention he receives. Jaylen Waddle has 245 yards receiving, 14.4 YPR. Braxton Berrios has been great getting open finding soft spots in the zones or just beating coverage to get open.

The Panthers will be showing off their rookie QB Bryce Young who is having a decent rookie season. Young has been sacked 12 times so far this season. Young has 750 yards passing with 5 TD’s and 4 INT’s and a 77 QBR. In contrast, Tua has 1614 yards, with 11 TD’s and 5 INT’s and a stellar 111.9 QBR. It would be nice to have a healthy Jaelan Phillips back, but it’s still unclear as to whether he will suit up. In any case, AVG is on fire right now, so this defense is going to bring it whether Phillips is there or not. I do hope we activate Nik Needham, but I think we have until the 29th to activate him, so it’s probably not happening this week.

No matter what happens at the game itself, this is a special time getting together with a great group. It’s such a pleasure to see you all each year, and of course, we’re thankful for Stanger’s hospitality, Chef Warren, communications man Hulk, transportation man Toba, and everyone who attends and makes it such a special time. It will be great to finally meet Herd, looking forward to that! Looking forward to meeting up again and having a great time while we’re together. Cheers!

Obviously the credit doesn’t only go to myself,” Hill said. “Like we have such a tremendous team, and it’s so well-rounded that it gets me open with the offensive creativity that [head coach] Mike [McDaniel] draws up each and every week, him and [offensive coordinator] Frank [Smith], they do a great job, and also having the playmakers around also plays into that. “Obviously, the offensive line is playing great ball up front, so that’s also a key, and then [quarterback] Tua [Tagovailoa]. Like Tua, I just feel like the way he’s been playing over the past few weeks — well, ever since I’ve been here, he’s been lights out. All of that plays into me playing well. I know a lot of people will say, ‘Reek, it’s all because of you.’ It’s not, man. It’s

ppl talk shit about our cake schedule so far, but the Eagles have beaten the patsies, vikings, commanders, and rams. None of those are good teams.
The only quality team they beat was the Buccaneers, which we shall see might not really be that good of a team as the season goes on.

It just goes to show you because we had the second hardest strength of schedule based upon last year’s outcomes during the preseason.

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I wonder if the Tuahaters have really accepted that he is a top QB (being that you can sort the quarterback stats by almost any column, and he is in the top) like oh Rob, happy that we have one of the best quarterbacks in the league or does he secretly hug his hatred tightly to his soul waiting waiting waiting?

We have Thanksgiving at our house and I would have to be out of there that evening to get in for at least a little pregaming. If my flight is delayed at all, I’d miss the game, and basically everything would have to go perfectly smooth during one of the heaviest travel weekends of the year. Naples,

I’m really hoping that when Ramsey gets back he’s a huge difference maker. He automatically becomes CB1, moving Howard to CB2 and Kohou or Smith in the slot. Hopefully that will tighten up the secondary so our pass rushers get that extra half second to sack or pressure the QB into errant throws. The LBs 🤷🏼‍♂️. I really wanted Roquan Smith in the draft, and was pissed when we didn’t pursue a trade for him last year. I suppose FA and the draft to improve that, unless Fangio can whip them into shape.

That breakdown was awesome. Dude makes a great point when he said Tua throws great deepball. And he knows the standard argument to that so then notes no he doesn’t have the strongest arm but in a timing offiense that isn’t as important. It’s when a guy is on the scramble and making stuff up on the fly that a strong arm is most important.

This is so awesome to read. I am going to share it.

Any time you keep your quarterback from being sacked, you deserve an A+. This offensive line has been one of the best groups in the NFL this year, and in this game, they only gave one quarterback hit, which helped the offense pass for 262 yards in the air.

The line also helped the running backs rush for 162 yards total.

Given all the injuries the group has had to deal with, they’ve consistently outperformed expectations.

The Dolphins hope to get Conner Williams back soon and Terron Armstead back after his stint on injured reserve.

    McDaniel regarding limiting Burns/Brown production:
You have to really be on your P’s and Q’s to perform against play makers. I thought our guys on the edge – whether it was OL/TE or FB – everyone responsible for blocking did a good job in preparation and execution for those guys

  45. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“I mean, we know their offense, when they get hot, they’re hard to stop. They got some big time playmakers. I mean, Tyreek (Hill): man, when he hits that thing running, it looks different. And it feels different. When he goes in that motion and hits full speed — you can watch that on film, but when you feel it on the field, he’s a difference maker. Obviously he had a huge day. I mean, he averaged over 20 yards a catch. So credit to him and their offense.”

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

A 12-pack of notes from Dolphins assistant coaches who spoke Thursday:

      ▪ It doesn’t look like Brandon Jones will be getting defensive snaps in the immediate future. Defensive coordinator
Vic Fangio indicated Thursday that his mind-set at the moment is to have DeShon Elliott continue to play every defensive snap alongside fellow safety Jevon Holland, at least for now.

Though Fangio said everything is subject to change, that approach would mean no defensive work for Jones, one of the NFL’s best blitzing safeties in 2021 and the first half of the 2022 season, before an injury ended his season. Jones was limited throughout training camp while working his way back from last October’s ACL injury. He played 58 snaps filling in for the injured Elliott against Buffalo but didn’t play a defensive snap against the Giants.
Fangio didn’t rule out playing Jones on defense. “There’s always the possibility of weaving guys in during the game,” Fangio said. “If things are going good, we kind of leave it alone.” As for Elliott, “he’s played well of late,” Fangio said. “He’s improved from week to week. He’s very diligent in his preparation.”

      ▪ Meanwhile, Fangio said he will continue to stick with Eli Apple when the team uses three cornerbacks. Playing Apple opposite Xavien Howard on the outside allows Kader Kohou to move inside to the slot in nickel packages. Kohou plays on the boundary when Miami plays only two corners. “There’s nothing permanent in the NFL, [but] that’s the way we are going to go right now,” Fangio said. “Get Kader back inside. In nickel, we think he does a good job.”
      ▪ Though the Dolphins have generally declined to give a timetable for Jalen Ramsey’s return from meniscus surgery, cornerbacks coach Sam Madison gave an encouraging outlook on Thursday. Asked if he’s optimistic if Ramsey will be able to play in a game in November, Madison said: “Yeah, speaking with trainers, he looks really good.” Ramsey is moving around well but is not practicing and remains on injured reserve.
Once he practices, the team will have 21 days to activate him. “Very hopeful and looking forward to getting him on the field,” Madison said. “He’s been doing really good.”

      ▪ When Jaelan Phillips returns from his oblique injury, Fangio must decide where to give Andrew Van Ginkel most of his snaps — on the edge (where Phillips and Bradley Chubb are starters) or at inside linebacker. “He’s making a case for that,” Fangio said of Van Ginkel continuing to play a lot, even when Phillips returns. “We will try to get Gink as many snaps as we can between edge and the ILB [inside linebacker] position.” Fangio offered interesting insight on his decision to use Van Ginkel some at inside linebacker for the first time in his career. “There was a point in the offseason where I was watching some tape; it was crossover tape,” Fangio said. “I wasn’t watching to watch him, and there was a play or two that maybe made me think he could be an ILB. “So I had one of the assistant coaches call up all his snaps that could relate to being an ILB. I watched it; it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. I thought for three or four days, ‘nah, let’s leave it alone.’” But then… “I said, ‘heck with it. I still have a gut feeling he could do it.’”

      ▪ Fangio said linebacker David Long Jr. “has been playing better and better of late. Still has to get out of inconsistencies at times but he’s improving.” When Phillips returns (possibly this week), Van Ginkel and Long could ultimately share inside linebacker snaps opposite Jerome Baker.
      ▪ The Dolphins never publicly criticized defensive lineman Christian Wilkins for sitting out a month of practices in August — and all the preseason games — while hoping to get a contract extension. On Thursday, Fangio said “the layoff he had in training camp” resulted in him being “rusty” early in the season. But Fangio said “his play has been good. It’s improving. He’s back to where he was” before he sat out practices from Aug. 5 through the end of the month.
      ▪ Fangio said defensive tackle Raekwon Davis is “doing good sometimes. Sometimes not so. It’s a consistency thing with him. I believe in Raekwon. He’s got to push himself, not that he isn’t [doing that], to keep going to get to places he hasn’t been before.”
      ▪ Fangio said edge player Emmanuel Ogbah has “had some production [but] missed an opportunity or two. He’s got to get better at some of the most fundamental things you have to do early in the play. That will help improve his play.”
      ▪ Fangio said he has discreetly used one of the new coverages he came up with in the past year. “It’s reared its head a little bit and it has helped us,” he said. ▪ Offensive coordinator Frank Smith said Chase Claypool, acquired last week from the Bears, is “a big, fast wide receiver with a big catch radius. With the skill set, everything looks good so far.” Smith said Claypool is learning the team’s system and terminology. Can a skill position player generally help quickly? “It’s very doable,” Smith said. With regard to a CBS report that Claypool could play some tight end here, tight ends coach John Embree said “at some point, Chase and I will be doing something together. Haven’t really met him yet.” Mike McDaniel said Claypool is a wide receiver but didn’t rule out tight end. Embree said several players on offense spend time with different coaches, so this wouldn’t be unusual.
      ▪ Smith said running back Jeff Wilson Jr. is ready to play after missing the first five weeks with rib and finger injuries. There’s one open roster spot with De’Von Achane’s move to injured reserve.
      ▪ In the wake of Stefon Diggs catching five passes against Kohou in the Dolphins’ loss in Buffalo, Howard has expressed a willingness to shadow the opposing team’s best receiver. Madison said that decision “goes to the defensive coordinator, what he wants you to do” and he understands Fangio’s reluctance to do it. When a cornerback shadows a receiver, “you start to wear down,” Madison said. Conversely, if a cornerback stays on one side, “that’s all he really had to do,” Madison said. “You are not stressed having to run across the field; you are fresh for the end of the game. He has energy.”

As per PFF: pressures = sacks, hits, and hurries.

For instance: a player registers 2 sacks, 2 hits, and 2 hurries in a game. That = 6 total pressures in the game.

  66. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I was going to post the PFF grades for our O-Line’s performance yesterday, but it’s (PFF’s grades are) just disgraceful. SMH

Austin Jackson was the worst-rated Tackle in the NFL yesterday? GTFOH 😡

Miami Dolphins Defensive Ranks through week 6
*1 game is being played tonight (Chargers and Cowboys)
    Stats per Pro Football REFERENCE

    Points allowed: #26
    Total yards allowed: #22
    Yards per play allowed: #18
    Takeaways: #24
    Passing yards allowed: #23
    Rushing yards allowed: #20

We’re slowly getting better, but only because we just played the lowly G-Men and Panthers the last 2 weeks

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Many are calling our Offense (and rightfully so) “The Greatest Show on Surf”, drawing comparisons to the ’99 Rams “The Greatest Show on Turf”.

Here is how the ’99 Rams ranked Defensively…

      Points allowed: #4
      Total yards allowed: #6
      Passing yards allowed: #20
      Rushing yards allowed: #1

As can be seen, our Defense has a way to go.

2022 Miami Dolphins Defensive Stats (Josh Boyer Defense)

      Points allowed: #24
      Total yards allowed: #18
      Yards per play allowed: #13
      Takeaways: #31
      Passing yards allowed: #27

      Vic Fangio, WTF?

  68. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Anyone still wish we had drafted Herbert?

  69. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Man we are spoiled with our offense. Watching other teams play is like what the hell is wrong with these offenses? Why can’t they score?

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

What I love about our offense it it morphs so quickly. We do play a DONE of 21, but we also play 21 concepts with other combinations. I watched THill play at least one snap at inline TE.

  71. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Boy, Tyreek got a 15 yard USL for the camera / back-flip and will get get a big fine again, but they have milked that image on every network! MRs!

  72. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Josh Boyer (’22) vs Vic Fangio (’23), Defensive ranks

Points allowed: #24 vs #26 (-2 ranks in one season)
Total yards allowed: #18 vs #22 (-4 ranks in one season)
Yards per play allowed: #13 vs #18 (-5 ranks in one season)
Takeaways: #31 vs #24 (+7 ranks in one season)
Passing yards allowed: #27 vs #23 (+4 in one season)
Rushing yards allowed: #6 vs #20 (-14 in one season)

So for whatever it’s worth, it’s a net loss of -14 overall ranks in one season, from Josh Boyer to Vic Fangio.

Still time to fix this, of course… we’re only 6 games in, but it MUST get fixed.

A LOT of people (non-Phins fans) mocked Tua for taking jiu-jitsu classes.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep, don’t land on or torque one part of your body, roll and go with the momentum. I also think Tua is a highly intelligent person. He’s a very grounded person at only 25 years old. He’s maturing as a person, husband, father and professional QB. I so want to see him holding up the Lombardi Trophy some day. Like in the new year.🙂

  74. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I find it comical to see other teams trying to imitate us with their pre-snap motions. If they don’t have SPEED and ENDURANCE (they don’t), it’s not going to work for them.

But hey, imitation is the greatest form of flattery, right?!! 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our entire offense plays fast. We attack with blocks as opposed to waiting for a block. MM has all 11 doing a job. It all happens in under 3 seconds and we get chunk yards both run and pass.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You mean to tell me that Coach McDaniel isn’t the second coming of Adam Gase in his mere second season? LOL 😉

        GO COACH McDANIEL!!!
        GO PHINS!!!
        HELL YEAH!!!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        I defended Gase for 2 years. His 3rd season I had enough.😂

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Oh, me too, Bro!!! 😆

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think/KNOW that Coach McDaniel is keeper this time. He’s brilliant, comes from the Shanahan tree, and we’ve already seen how strategic he’s been.

Seriously, McDaniel is definitely >>>>>>> than Gase, even after 2 mere seasons.

  75. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tua is a man of great character, IMO. He’s not trying to shove shit down anybody’s throat like LeBum James, he’s just asking for people to pause and think about matters…

  76. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tony Pollard!!! Helluva run after the catch!!!

  77. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The Chargers might have a recent history of choking, but I don’t want to see them in the playoffs with their Offense and their Defense.

It would be most ideal for the Cowboys to win tonight, putting the Chargers behind the 8-ball early.

  78. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    YEAH!!! Chargers LOSE!!!

  79. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

My wife asked me an interesting question on Sunday while the Pets were losing.

“If Belicheat gets fired, where do you think he ends up next year?”

I’m not sure he gets fired this year, and if he does I hope he retires, but it got me looking at teams that might fire their head coach at the end of the season, I’d say the Chargers have to be at the very top of the list. This has to be a huge disappointment of a season for them.

  81. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

  86. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    In answer to Kong’s question:
I don’t think Bellichek gets fired but if he does I don’t see him coaching next year. He will at least take one year off and then try find a job with an up and coming QB that he thinks he can win

  87. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Looks like Jeff Wilson will be a go this week. Read that he was only inactive because MM wanted to have an extra OL available in Robert Jones. Wilson was actually ready to go but it made to much sense to give him another week off and have an extra OL.

Wilson will certainly take Brooks spot on the active list for the game at Philly. Hopefully he comes out showing with fresh legs and no rust.

  88. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Through six games this season, the Dolphins have totaled 2,992 yards on 374 plays, an average of exactly 8.00 yards per play. No other team in the NFL is even close.

In second place in the yards per play ranking are the Bills and 49ers, both averaging 5.98 yards per play. The gap of over two yards per play between first place and second place is bigger than the difference between second place and last place (the Giants at 4.05 yards per play).”

  89. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I had to sit between Sonny and Herd, who I discovered, do not watch the game! Couple of chatter boxes.

  90. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

Piggy, I’ll be going to the Jets game in NY if you guys are all going. Please add me to the ticket list. Thanks!

  91. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Pete Prisco’s pick for the week

Miami (5-1) at Philadelphia (5-1): I think this game is going to be a shootout and as a general rule, I never pick against the highest-scoring team in the NFL when I’m trying to predict the winner of a shootout. In related news, the Dolphins are the highest-scoring team in the NFL. PICK: Dolphins 34-27 over Eagles.

  92. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

Lol @ Rock. If Herds there they’ll probably go.

In the ten rankings presented we go from #6 to #1 (3 of them). Still a lot of skepticism in the write-ups though.
