2023 Season – Game 8 – Patriots @ Dolphins

It’s been a crazy week, it seemed as if we may be heading into this huge divisional home game missing quite a few very important players. As it turns out, we may actually be getting back some extremely important players. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but there is a chance we may see CB Jalen Ramsey get his first game action as a Miami Dolphin. It’s also possible that DB Nik Needham may see his first game action since his achilles tear in Week 6 of last season. Needham plays mostly inside at nickel, and always seems to rise to the occasion. WR Tyreek Hill, who injured his hip last week against Philadelphia was seemingly going to miss some time, but now appears to be ready to go against the Patriots. On the bad side of the ledger, it looks like we have lost OG Isaiah Wynn for the rest of the season. With Terron Armstead perpetually OUT, and Connor Williams questionable with a groin injury, that leaves the O-line paper thin. RB Raheem Mostert looks like he will play after sustaining a knee injury in Sunday Night’s game against the Eagles. The invisible rookie CB Cam Smith is now out with a foot injury and did not practice yesterday. One more to add, S Jevon Holland did log in a limited practice wearing the customary red jersey for those in concussion protocol. LB David Long Jr. appears to be fine and logged a full practice, which is good news.

With the Isaiah Wynn injury, and the aforementioned Terron Armstead OUT, the Dolphins O-line if Connor Williams can’t go will look like this . . .

LT Kendall Lamm – LG Lester Cotton – C Liam Eichenberg – RG Robert Hunt – RT Austin Jackson

OG Lester Cotton looked like he might have been close to winning the starting LG spot in training camp and preseason where he impressed. He did struggle some against Philadelphia’s big defensive line, but I expect him to be more prepared this week. Kendall Lamm looks passable at LT, but definitely not as good as Terron Armstead when healthy, whenever that actually occurs. Liam Eichenberg has had a difficult time, and while his snaps are accurate, more than starter Connor Williams, that’s the only positive to speak of. Back to safety for a moment, I had heard earlier in the week that DB Nik Needham might play Safety opposite S DeShon Elliott, but now it appears as if it will be Brandon Jones. It seems as if that situation is fluid and could change depending on the matchup. Hopefully, Holland can clear concussion protocol, but that doesn’t seem likely.

Let me address Jaelan Phillips, and clarify some things. I’m a Jaelan Phillips fan. I like the kid, he has the right work ethic, enthusiasm and physical ability to be a great player in the NFL. What I hated was all the hype he received before the season. I liken that to being on the cover of a Madden game. It’s a curse! As such, it has been a curse. Phillips is nowhere near a player being considered for DPOY, he was injured early, played ineffectively through that injury for 2 games before missing 3. After 7 games, Phillips has played in 4 games (starting 2) and has 20 tackles (11 solo), 1 TFL, 5 QB hits, and 1.5 sacks. His replacement, on the other hand has been far more effective, AVG or Andrew Van Ginkel. AVG has started 5 games, played in all 7, and 31 tackles (19 solo), 4 TFL’s, 9 QB hits, and 4 sacks. When folks gush about how great Phillips has been, sorry guys, but just not true. The stud has been AVG, not Jaelan Phillips. Now Phillips has plenty of time to be the stud we all hoped he could be, but up till now, as Larry David might say, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”.

It looks as if RB Raheem Mostert will likely have a large role this week. It’s odd, I haven’t seen anything about RB Jeff Wilson Jr. What will be interesting to see is who gets the touches when Mostert comes off the field. RB De’Von Achane will probably not see any action until after our BYE week, so Week 11. That leaves Jeff Wilson Jr., Salvon Ahmed, and rookie Chris Brooks. If it were my choice, I’d like to see more of Chris Brooks. Wilson is under contract in ’24 as well, but can definitely be a cap casualty with only a $700K dead cap hit. Brooks is not under contract for next season, he came in as a UDFA and is a bargain at $600K this season. Brooks and Wilson both are hard runners, but Chris Brooks will be 24 going on 25 while Wilson will be 28 going on 29 with a long injury history. Of course, Achane returning will mean less carries for everyone, including top back Raheem Mostert. Before Achane was injured, Mostert and Achane were basically splitting carries, and with great results.

If X is healthy enough to go Sunday, we may finally see the CB tandem we’ve only dreamed of, Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey. To be realistic though, Ramsey should be on a snap count, which will limit how many snaps he plays, so Eli Apple will probably see a fair amount of action, or possibly Kader Kohou. If Ramsey and Apple split time on the outside, Kohou and Needham may split snaps inside, where both are best suited. Both Kohou and Needham have done their best work inside. Ideally, we’d see Holland and Elliott at safety, but unfortunately, we might have to wait a week to see that quartet. If somehow Holland were to clear concussion protocol, I wouldn’t be surprised if Brandon Jones plays while Holland, who is so important to this team is given a rest this week.

At WR, River Cracraft has been designated to return from IR and has the customary 21 day period to be activated. If Hill is playing, and it appears as if he is, and WR Jaylen Waddle is able to go, he was dealing with a back injury in Sunday Night’s clash with the Eagles, it will probably be Hill, Waddle and Berrios. After that, Cedrick Wilson Jr. got some action and made the most of it, so I’d expect him to be active. It would be a toss-up between Robbie Chosen and Chase Claypool, I don’t expect the Dolphins to rush back Cracraft this week, but who really ever knows? Also, hopefully FB Alec Ingold is ok with his foot injury and create some room for whomever is carrying the football. I’d love to see the 3 pass rushers, Phillips – AVG – Chubb make a killing this weekend. You can include Wilkins, Sieler, Davis and any of the other defenders as well, but I’d love specifically for the trio to wreak some havoc on Mac Jones, and take over the game.

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We didn’t look amazing, but it’s better to look OK and win than to look amazing and lose, so I’ll take the W

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

It’s the NFL, I thought we looked like a really good NFL team today, they looked very average at best and it played out just like that. We’re good face it lol

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

They’re a good team … Cheatie draws up a good D … it’s hard to play a team that knows you so well.

  39. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We MUST take the win, being that once again, we were without 3 starting O-Linemen. And on the Defensive side of the ball, we were without X and Holland.

  40. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Thought J Wilson looked good if rusty … same for B. JONES and Robert Jones. And Ramsey is a star of Tyreek’s level.

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Patriots beat us in games like this for two decades and nobody cared. They got the W and moved on.

  42. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We easily could have scored again and “blow them out” like the Iggles “blew us out” last week….

  43. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Woah, The Broncos up on the Chiefs

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

This same Patriots team upset the Bills last week, so I’m more than happy to beat them this week. Definitely concerned with all the injuries. No idea when Armstead will get back and if he can last more than a few plays. Also, can’t wait until Needham is really back, and of course we get the A-Train back!

  45. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Coming into the season when the afc East looked like it was going to be a 3 team race, I thought, all 3 of the top teams will split with one another but the team that wins the afc East will sweep the patriots

8 weeks into the season, we are the sweeper of the patriots

It’s easy to downplay this win bc the patriots aren’t good

But the fact hat we aren’t struggling with the bad or mediocre teams is ideal for playoff seating

Some how the knee jerk media is beating this lame drum that if you lose to good teams you are fraudulent. The reality is beating the rams yiu should and beating the good teams at home is how you get a top seed in the playoffs and a home game or more

  46. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I read something the other week that a coach (in the past) said- “you have to beat the teams you’re supposed to beat, and beat half of the other teams”. That makes total sense. We’ve been beating the teams we’re supposed to beat, now we need to make progress on that other part…

  47. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

We DO NOT want the Chiefs losing to the Broncos today

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Bills are only 1 game behind us BUT,
Dolphins are 2-1 in division and 4-1 in conference
Bills are 1-2 in division and 2-3 in conference

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – my guess is Brian is thinking if KC loses this week they will be fired up to win next week. I got nothing else I can imagine he meant

  68. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Wonder which Bears team will show up tonight vs Chargers

  69. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Bengals with an impressive road win.

Again, Bills at Bengals next Sunday night.

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

NFL network shows the Queafs as #1 in the AFC still even after the loss and the fact that we are tied in conference, division and nondivision wins and we have the higher net points by nine points.

That will change when we put up 40 on them next week for the win.

  71. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Didn’t realize Cousins has an Achilles injury

  72. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Great win today!! Loved seeing the Fins beating the Pets in the throwbacks.

This game played out a little like the Panthers game. It took us a few possessions to get going, but once we took the lead, I felt the Pets never really threatened to win this game.

Chiefs looked bad today and still have the lead on us due to SOV, since we’re tied in division and conference. We win next week, we’ll have a two game lead on them, and if the Bengals can give us an assist and beat the Bills, we could potentially go into the break with a 1.5 game lead in the division and be at #1 in the conference.

  73. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think our defense is really close. Once we get Howard and Holland back there with Ramsey, Elliott playing well, Kohou moves back to the nickel, have Needham and Jones waiting in the wings, front 7 is getting pressure and defending the run well. Our LBs are showing up a little more each week- maybe we put together a high level performance next week…

Injuries on the oline are obviously the biggest concern right now

  74. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh, and the refs gave us a ‘we owe you one’ game, lol.

  75. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Freaking have to wake up at like 6 am next Sunday to get donuts and watch our game start at 6 effing 30.

  76. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Tua 6-0 against Belicheat

  77. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It was nice to see C. Wilson get rewarded with that TD and have another big catch earlier in the game. Dude is lost on the depth chart but is finding ways in recent games to show up and contribute.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our bye week is coming at a good time. One more game against the vulnerable Chiefs on a neutral field. We need to get through one more game and try to get some guys back for the stretch run.🙂

Michigan rescinded Jim Harbaughs contract offer. He’s done there – my bet is he goes to the Raiders.

SF drops 3 in a row.
Brock Purdy with 2 picks and a lost fumble.
    Mahomes same.
Mahomes with a 59.2 passer rating.
KC zero TDs, zero 2nd half points.

  83. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Dolphins home record is best in NFL since 11/7/21 … 89%

  84. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Naples,

Mahomes was reportedly playing with flu symptoms . Hopefully he shares it with some of the team.

  85. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

KC game is obviously important, for a myriad of reasons: shut everyone up about us not being able to beat a good team, get a win streak going, go into the bye with a win. But looking ahead, this could decide who gets home field advantage and the first round bye in the playoffs. The Baltimore game in Week 17 will be a big one too.

  86. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Second Quarter of the season is done after tonight.
We went 3-1 in the first quarter and 3-1 in the second quarter.
As I said after the Buffalo loss,
if we go 3-1 each quarter,
we’ll be 12-4 going into the last game
    … with the Bills.

    If we lose to KC,
we’ll need to win 3 in a row
to achieve the 3-1 for the 3rd Quarter.
That would mean beating the Raiders, Jets, and Commanders
    all in a row.
    We can do that, though.

(However, the jest have won 3 in a row as it stands now,
    which is concerning,
as we don’t want them to get confidence.)

  87. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It was pretty impressive (they don’t suck that bad) to beat NE with all backup O linemen except for IRONMAN Austin Jackson….(waiting on Ken…3…2…1…)

  88. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Next Gen stat of the game: Tua Tagovailoa used play-action on a season-high 38.8% of dropbacks in Week 8 against the Patriots, completing 14-of-18 passes and throwing for a season-high 189 yards on such passes.

  89. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

NFL Research: Tyreek Hill crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark on Sunday, bringing his season total to 1,014 — the most receiving yards by a single player through a team’s first eight games in the Super Bowl era.

  90. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

  91. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So, someone please answer me this. We beat the Patriots by the exact same score the as we lost to the Iggles, but somehow we got blown out by the iggles and I am hearing it was a “close game” against the Pats. How is that?

  92. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

That shit had me rolling yesterday. Told you all. LOL

I’m just tired of these fines,” Hill said. “The NFL, they fine me so much, they been finding small ways to fine me. Like they even tried to fine me for my shirt today. And I’m like, what’s going on with that?

“So I don’t want to be part of no NFL fine list no more, for the rest of the year. I’m sick of it.”

  93. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So the Dolphins O-line for a while was Kion Smith, Lester Cotton, Liam Eichenberg, Robert Jones, and Austin Jackson.

Kudos to those guys for trying so hard and over-achieving.
Kudos to Grier for assembling a great group of backup OL.

But McDaniel’s play designs are what really made that work.

  94. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

We just have to get through one more game (I agree with BrianNY about hoping Mahomes spreads the flu to the rest of the KC team lol) …

After the bye week, and barring any new injuries during the KC game, we should be at full strength …

But that means we should be getting back:

    Armstead
    C Williams
    Cracraft
    Wynn
    Brooks
    ACHANE !
    B Jones
    X
    Holland

    Clearly waiting on:
Lamm – could be out much longer
Hunt – can’t find any updates this morning on severity (anyone?).

Coming off bye, healthier than any part of the season, at either 7-2 or 6-3, with weeks 11-15 all games we will be favored in before closing out with 3 tough games … we will be a dangerous team.

  95. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s always nice to wake up, but it’s even better the day after we beat the Pets.

  96. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It’d be nice to have Holland and Howard back for Mahomes.

Cracraft is in his 21-day window, but we might decide to let him lapse into a year-long IR unless we lose another WR, just to save a roster spot, although I’m a big CrayCray fan.
