2023 Season – Game 10 – Raiders @ Dolphins

The Dolphins play at home in the friendly confines of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, where the Dolphins are at their best. In 4 games, the Dolphins have scored 174 points good for an absurd average of 43.5 points per game. The defense has thrived here as well, allowing 74 points in 4 games for an average of 18.5 points per game. We score 11 more points per game and allow about 6.5 points per game less. We’re better at home, of this there is no doubt. I’d love to fancy our team as a team that can win anywhere, but right now, we’re a much better team at home. This just signified the importance of not only winning the division, but having a good enough conference record to have home field is as many games as possible.

The Raiders are an up and down team, but mostly they’re a team that has struggled offensively. The Raiders decided Jimmy Garoppolo was their QB, and Garropolo who we all know can’t play a full season is OUT and their rookie 2023 4th RD draft pick Aidan O’Connell has a 2-1 record in Jimmy G’s stead. In total, the Raiders have scored 17.2 points per game, or close to half of what we have scored this season. The Raiders defense has been decent, allowing only 20.5 points per game, 4.5 points less than our Dolphins defense. There are two huge difference makers for both teams entering this game though. The Raiders have finally figured out they need to lean on their best offensive weapon, RB Josh Jacobs, while the Dolphins come in about healthier than we have been all season, and more complete.

In the last 2 games for the Raiders, RB Josh Jacobs has been a workhouse, helping the team to two consecutive victories over NY teams, first the Giants, in which Jacobs had a season high 26 carries for 98 yards, and then against the Jets with a new season high 27 carries for 116 yards. For the Dolphins, we’re getting back our secondary, and possibly for the first time all season, we’ll have a healthy CB tandem of Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey. In addition, we’ll have a healthy Safety tandem of Jevon Holland and DeShon Elliott. Our pass rush has come on lately, and a healthy Jaelan Phillips and a resurgence from OLB Bradley Chubb has got this defense playing better. Andrew Van Ginkel has taken on more of a secondary role, but still a big part of the defensive rotation. This is the defense we’d hoped for, now they have to stay healthy and shut teams down. This week, objective #1 is to limit Josh Jacobs. The Raiders don’t want to put the game on QB Aidan O’Connell’s shoulders, so if we shut down Jacobs, it could be a long day for the raiders offense who don’t do well when Jacobs isn’t getting lots of carries and thriving.

This week could be the return of a big offensive weapon for the Dolphins, RB De’Von Achane. There are differing reports everywhere, but there is a good chance Achane returns from a knee injury suffered against the NY Giants October 8th. Raheem Mostert has logged 2 consecutive limited practices but almost certainly will play Sunday. Of more concern is RG Robert Hunt, who looks to miss this game with a hamstring injury. Terron Armstead who played last week will start at LT with Liam Eichenberg at LG, Connor Williams at C, Lester Cotton at RG and Austin Jackson at RT. Not ideal, and Maxx Crosby is feasting this year with 59 total tackles (35 solo), 9 sacks, 13 TFL, 15 QB hits, 1 FF and 1 FR. Austin Jackson and Lester Cotton and our TE’s are going to have keep Crosby in check and away from our QB Tua Tagovailoa, who gets rid of the ball ultra quick anyway. If we have both RB’s this week, keep in mind how they’ve thrived splitting carries. Against the Broncos, they had an amazing day, Achane with 203 yards on 18 carries and 2 TD’s, while Mostert had 82 yards on 13 carries and 3 TD’s. Achane had over 100 yards against the Bills but Mostert was stopped dead. Against the Giants, Achane exploded for 151 yards on 11 carries while Mostert had 65 yards on 10 carries. both scoring a TD each.

The defense needs to continue to make strides and become one of the leagues best units. This is the lineup we’ve waited to watch, now they have to realize their potential. It seems likely PR/KR Braxton Berrios won’t be playing which returns return duties back to Cedric Wilson. We do, however, get a boost with the return of WR River Cracraft. Cracraft and Ced Wilson will probably take slot duties if Berrios can’t go. One more concern on offense is the health of TE Durham Smythe who is dealing with an ankle injury, but did manage to get a limited practice session in on Thursday, and will most likely suit up. The Dolphins are ranked #10 against the run and have 29 sacks, good for 9th in the NFL in sacks. With the secondary healthy, and all our pass rushers healthy, I expect the sack numbers to go up and for this defense to start forcing more turnovers. Kader Kohou moving back to the slot where he really thrives, will share time with Nik Needham who is getting healthy as well. If and when rookie CB Cam Smith ever makes his presence felt remains to be seen, but even without Smith, this is the defense we want out there.

Great preview MikeE! My thoughts exactly. Shut down Jacobs and also Adams. Do that and the Raiders offense will have a long day.

Do the above and if our OL holds up, we will be fine.

I do worry about Adams getting lose for easy points though.

    Great preview, Mike E!

    *in my Sean Connery voice*
I have a question for you… you know… just out of curiosity. If sacks are more important than pressures (hits, etc), then why did you list how many hits Maxx Crosby has, but not how many sacks he has?!! HaHaHaHaHa!!! 😆

    LOL M – Believe me, I get it! 🙂

    Mike E,

On the serious tip though, great job again! And at least you know I actually read your articles instead of just jumping to the comment section. You put in work and you should know that I appreciate what ya do, man! 🙂

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just curious – What do you all think about Cam Smith not being able to see the field? Think Fangio doesn’t trust rookies? Is Smith not mentally prepared (understanding assignments and schemes)? Is he physically not up to snuff? All of the above?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s a great question. Well, we all know Cam was ballin’ in the pre-season before he got hurt. He’s healthy now, so there’s that.

I don’t know anything about Fangio’s history with rookies so to say he trusts them or not, but I would think that’s where the answer lies: he’s gone with vets over Cam each and every time.

Maybe(?) Cam’s still swimming in the deep end of the pool or maybe Fangio wants to bring him along slowly. Again, great question.

  8. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We definitely need to account for Maxx Crosby on Sunday. I don’t want to see ANY grass on Tua’s jersey unless he slides after a scramble.

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Was just thinking. Pats are 2-8. Their only wins have come against the Bills and Jets. I don’t think I could have scripted it any better. lol

  10. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

MikeE, not sure what the deal is. He looked decent in PS. It is sort of baffling. Especially when we were dealing with injuries.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Besides the fact that we had so many opportunities for him to make an impact because of injuries, I hate to think we threw away another high draft pick. Channing Tindall is just a depth player, although he was a 3rd RD pick. If Cam Smith is another depth player (he’s not even that at the moment), that would be pretty sad.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

He has played only 4 defensive snaps all in the Carolina game. He does have 117 special team snaps and has played in every game on ST’s.

RB De’Von Achane (knee) is looking optimistic to play on Sunday versus the Raiders, head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters, though he said nothing is final yet.
WR Chase Claypool has a minor knee procedure over the bye week and is week to week, per McDaniel.
G Robert Hunt (hamstring) will be ruled out for Sunday’s game, per McDaniel.

Just curious – What do you all think about Cam Smith not being able to see the field? Think Fangio doesn’t trust rookies?…
    ————-
Dating back to 2010, there were only 3 CBs who were selected day 2 or earlier on a Vic Fangio DC or HC-led team…

    2021: Pat Surtain II R1P9 – 15 starts as a rook
    2020: Michael Ojemudia R3(77) – 11 starts as a rook
    2011: Chris Culliver R3(80) – 0 starts as a rook (36 tackles as a rook)

    — Surtain is a one-off, being a generational talent selected so early.
    — Ojemudia was forced into action prematurely due to AJ Bouye being suspended 4 games and missing 5 games due to injury = 9 games out for Bouye
    — Culliver had too much competition on that 13-3 NFC Championship game team, but still saw playing time

Conclusion: I’m not sure there’s enough data out there to definitively conclude W(hy)TF Cam Smith isn’t getting any snaps, but being he’s had plenty of chances to play due to injuries to our CBs, I’m guessing he’s swimming in the deep end of the pool.

IF Cam Smith turns into a bust (far too early to make that assessment), it would be absolutely disastrous for us. Know why? We didn’t have a 1st round pick last year due to Ross-Gate.

If we can’t hit on day 1 and day 2 picks, it will set us back and eventually haunt our house.

  18. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

All receipts for Twitter doctors aside, this is yet another significant injury for Burrow in less than 4 years. Starting to look like keeping him healthy may be the Bengals biggest problem.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

His fingers and calves are obviously compromised. It would be like throwing him to the wolves to keep endangering this kid.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        lol

I think as conscientious football fans, we should all get together and have a “Save Joe Burrow” rally and try to get him medically retired from the league. Let’s protect him from himself before it’s too late.

  19. Ken's avatar Ken says:

What Burrow is actually a really nasty injury. The ligament can be reconstructed and he will play again but there will long lasting effects including early onset arthritis

  20. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I CAN’T WAIT to see our team again this Sunday. This has been the most wonderfully productive bye week I can ever recall, but it’ll be nice to get some Dolphins football again.

  21. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I really wish the bungles would have been able to pull off a win against the ravens with the Burrow injury. It would have knocked Balt down a peg and the bungles will be losing a lot more games now. It would have really helped with the seeding.

Of course they screwed themselves with the loss to KC in Germany which may have cost the first round buy, even if we keep winning.

  22. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The Chiefs have the Iggles, Raiders, Packers, Bills, Pats, Raiders, Bungles & Chargers left. We need them to lose at LEAST one more game to an AFC team and two games total while we sweep the rest of the season to jump them to the playoff bye. (that’s if another team doesn’t jump us or stay ahead of us)

A loss to the Iggles would be a good one.

  23. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The Ravens would be next up for the Bye as it stands if KC fell. They face Chargers, Rams, Jags, 49rs, Dolphins & Steelers. A lost to US and one of the other AFC opponents would drop them below us, but I’m not sure if the Jags would then have the bye. (Depends on what they win and who against)

Bottom line is the loss in Germany really was a damn kick in the teeth

  24. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It’s fun to be checking out possibilities for having the #1 seed and the bye throughout the playoffs with the very real possibility that it could happen.

It’s been so long for us that we are giddy about it and lament each of our losses, even though we have one of the best records in the whole league.

  25. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    I hope this isn’t jinxy,
but I swear it’s like challengers are falling away in multiple ways
and enhancing our position for us.

Like 2 contenders losing their starting QBs within a few days.
Like half a dozen contending teams losing while we are on bye.

Like the coach of the next team in our way getting fired.

  26. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It is so hard to see through these aqua&orange glasses! I don’t know if we are really good enough to beat Baltimore for a second year in a row. Is Tua going to have a 400 yard game or a 160 yard game? We are so fucking Jeckle and Hyde. Are we going to run for 300 yards or 80?

I guess I am going to have to do some “simulations” (my excuse to play madden LOL)

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Nice write, Mike!

I do get the feeling Fangio prefers vets over young players. I agree with M13 that Cam Smith is likely swimming in the deep end. He has the skills to play, what else could it be.

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Denver on a roll. Improving our SOV every week GO DENVER!

  29. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Week 6 Fangio said directly that he doesn’t think Cam has the entire playbook and all the convolutions and adjustments that have to happen based upon what is being shown by the offense down. He said he was getting better and was trying hard, but for now they were going to keep going with the guys he felt had the best grasp of the full playbook.

If you took Oakland out of Oakland (say go back in time 300 years) and just experienced the land, I think it is the most beautiful area of the earth I have experienced. (Oakland, Berkley, the Redwoods surrounding) It is a holy experience to step from the deciduous scrub wood into the ancient redwoods. There is an actual definitive line, I could feel it stepping across it back in forth in both directions. Under the canopy of the redwoods it is like being in an air conditioned cathedral The temp dropped 15 degrees and it went dead silent. like god is listening. (this from an avowed atheist) Just had to put that out there The people of Oakland may not be aligned with one;s sensibilities, but I would argue the climate and vistas stand up to any in the world.

This is true. The land and climate was/is beautiful. But the people? When I was a recruiter in that area back in the 80’s we had to take candidates into Oakland for processing. There were some bad lookin dudes outside of Bart, most uncomfortable feeling I’ve ever had

Went to a 49ers vs Raiders PS game at Candlestick in the 2000s, on the way back to NV we stopped in Oakland for food, the vibe wasn’t much better

Yes, WR is a need next offseason/draft as we will be spending a lot of money trying to resign almost our whole OL and Wilkins/AVG.

Oakland is a shithole. Always has been.
    ———-
I’ll run with that because that was my ultimate point, my man… as to why professional sports teams are fleeing Oakland for Las Vegas.

But why is it that TODAY, Oakland looks so ‘purdy’, safe, and clean? That was the question… WHY? Well, ‘President’ (<-LOL) Xi visited Biden and Gavin Newsom in Oakland this past week after Newsom visited China the week before.

All the defecation, the needles, the graffiti, the tent cities, and the thugs on the street were suddenly cleaned up just in time for the CCP leader to arrive.

What an INSULT! Perhaps Oakland could have saved the Raiders and A's from relocating if its leaders had only cleaned up the city long ago for the sake and safety of its own citizens and America.

I hope this doesn't come off as "too political":… this involves two legendary sports franchises: the Raiders and A's. And it also involves a lot of revenue to be lost by the city of Oakland as a result (guess the taxpayers will pick it up). Where was all of that revenue going, anyway? What a very, very sad STATE of affairs.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Or perhaps the “people” of Oakland can stop acting like fucking animals and clean up after themselves. You know why my neighborhood is nice? It’s because every single one of my neighbors will bend over to pick up the trash that somebody else dropped. And will confront the fucker who dropped it. We will not allow our neighborhood to be that way. It’s not because the police it’s not because of some public works guy picking up our garbage. We myself and my neighbors care for my neighborhood. If these people don’t wanna live, like animals fucking pick up your own trash. Take care of your own neighborhoods first.

Yeah Jets have already played just over half of the tough part of their schedule. They lost to the Cowboys and Chiefs and beat the Eagles and Bills. Have to add that they barely lost to the Chiefs. Game was tied 20-20 in 4th quarter and CHiefs won by just a FG 23-20 over the Jets.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

At best, I think we split with the Jets and need to beat Bills to split with them.

Would like to see Jets lose again. We should get some help vs Bills in the next couple weeks.

I go to get the bottle opener out of the drawer and the entire drawer front comes off. Not just the ftont, no, those screws held, the whole front of the box. The biscuits just broke, no evidence of glue. SIGH! Dropped the bastard on my foot CRACK yell slam, etc, etc. Just got it all mocked back up, had to make new wood biscuits. glued it and clamped it. Got the bed stripped, loaded the laundry and found my lucky shirt and Ramsley jersey. WHEW! on time.

  82. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Not a lot gone our way so far, but the defense looks strong. Really the only ref call I disagree with so far was the no call on the pick on 3rd down.

The only way we lose this game is if we turn it over a couple more times

I noticed the washer had stopped and said “sorry guys, I’m on it” and walked into the other room to put the wash from the washer into the dryer and yelled back toward the living room, “I’m actively doing laundry! It’s even more effective if I’m not watching and actively doing laundry!”
