2023 Season – Game 13 – Titans @ Dolphins MNF

The Dolphins come home to Hard Rock Stadium and get an extra day of rest when they face off in a Monday Night Matchup against the Tennessee Titans. For those of you who don’t know, I used to love the Dolphins playing in a Monday Night Football affair. You also know how I lament the fact that it is no longer the NFL marquis matchup it used to be, and if my feelings aren’t enough to prove it, this is actually a Monday Night Doubleheader, the other game being the NY Giants hosting the Green Bay Packers. As a football fan before the likes of the NFL Sunday Ticket, nothing was more exciting than having the Dolphins slotted to play on Monday Night Football. With Thursday Night Football, Sunday Night Football and soon to come Saturday Football, it’s really just another game, which in my mind is a shame.

The Dolphins have a lengthy injury list, and those include LT Terron Armstead and RG Robert Hunt, and of course LB Jerome Baker, all who did not practice this week. Armstead still has a chance, but if I had to make a guess, I’d say Hunt won’t be playing this week. Good news is G Robert Jones is back at practice and full practice. T Kendall Lamm also did not practice which would give T Kion Smith another start if Armstead doesn’t go. RB Raheem Mostert gets these “maintenance” days which translates to veteran rest, and he’s good to go for Monday night, as well as De’Von Achane who participated in full and is no longer on the injury report. TE Durham Smythe did not practice but I suspect he will play Monday Night.

The Titans at 4-8 are having a miserable season, but QB Will Levis is a bright spot in the murky darkness. WR DeAndre Hopkins is having a nice comeback year, with 50 receptions for 774 yards and 5 TD’s. RB Derrick Henry is 2nd in the NFL just ahead of our own Raheem Mostert with 841 yards rushing and 8 TD’s. I don’t need to tell you all which back leads in the NFL in rushing TD’s, but it’s so much fun to say Raheem Mostert with 14! Mostert trails Henry by only 13 yards so let’s hope Mostert takes over 2nd place after this game. The Titans offense is 25th in the NFL scoring 17.8 points per game and the defense is mid pack at 16th, allowing 21.3 points per game. The Dolphins are 2nd in the NFL in scoring at 32 points per game and on defense, have improved to 21st allowing 22.2 points per game. Our defense has really been killing it, and although it was thought RB Derrick Henry may miss the game with a concussion, he will be playing. First we lost OLB Jaelan Phillips for the season and now LB Jerome Baker is week to week. AVG and Emmanuel Ogbah have done well in Phillips stead, and LB Duke Riley played his best game as a Miami Dolphins last week against the Commanders. It’s obviously a tough task trying to bring King Henry down at 6’3 247, so this defense will have to get to Henry early and not allow him to get a head of steam.

The Dolphins signed DE Jason Pierre-Paul, and also signed big DT Justin Ellis to the PS this week. Ellis is a massive 6’2 350 nose tackle type of DT who may help down the stretch as we know our DT’s all play tons of snaps. I think JPP will be playing mostly on the D-line either at end or maybe even tackle in pass russ situations. Both Sieler and Wilkins have been over 75% of the defensive snaps, so both Ogbah and JPP can give these guys a breather so they’re ready for the championship run. On offense, WR River Cracraft is back, although Tyreek Hill is the show in Miami. WR Jaylen Waddle is a distant 2nd to Tyreek, Waddle has almost exactly HALF the receiving yards (743) of Hill (1481) and 1/4 of the TD’s (3) to Hill’s (12). Still, Waddle is important as he’s always a threat, but he’s had a tough season with some untimely drops. RB Jeff Wilson seems as the break glass in case of emergency back with Mostert and Achane sharing very productive carries. WR Cedrick Wilson Jr. has quietly done some good things although the last 2 games he was not targeted.

Now that the Dolphins are the #1 seed, they have a target on their back, but also have a target set for themselves, to keep the #1 seed and play every post season game, with the exception of the Super Bowl at home at Hard Rock. Will Levis is a capable QB, and while his completion percentage is garbage at less than 60%, he has 7 TD’s and only 2 INT’s, splitting the season equally, and sharing a 2-4 record with QB Ryan Tannehill, who this season had 2 TD’s and 6 INT’s. Titans TE Chigoziem Okonkwo has the 2nd most receptions (35) behind WR DeAndre Hopkins (50) followed by RB Tyjae Spears with 33. We need to shut down King Henry and let our new dominant secondary and pass rush limit the Levis to Hopkins connection and we should be able to win this game. No trap games, every game must result in a W to maintain that all important home field advantage.

I concur with what you are saying about the diminished glamour of MNF,
but the added day off did give us a bit of rest for our beat up OL and
Jevon Holland, Durham Smythe, and Alec Ingold benefited as well.

Nice write Mike. I wish Tannehill was playing. I wanted to see him go down a few times, with that deer in the headlights look.

I am conflicted as to who to root for in the KC v Buffalo game. I think either way it is a win for us

  5. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think I am rooting for the Chiefs. A Chiefs win followed with wins by us over Tennessee and the Jets means we clinch the division and no matter what happens against Dallas Baltimore and Buffalo we are division champs

  6. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Regarding the Buffalo/Chiefs game- I’m not worried about winning the division, we have that sewn up. The Chiefs, Ravens, and Bills are the only teams I think can beat us in the AFC. I’d rather see Buffalo not make the playoffs.

But getting the 1st seed is more important than whether or not the Bills make the playoffs, that is why I am a little torn on that game.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t count anything until it is done. Plus having the division locked up with 3 weeks to go would be really nice

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I can understand why you’d think that way. We’ve been bad so long, it’s hard not to.

For me, this team has earned my trust to a certain degree. If we can’t win one of our last 3 games and Buffalo wins out, then we don’t deserve to win the division, but I am not worried about that happening.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ultimately the perfect scenario would be the Bills beat the Chiefs and lose to the Cowboys, then we get the best of both worlds, but I’ll be happy no matte the outcome of the Bills/Chiefs.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Cav, that is the perfect scenario

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Nice article MikeE. No corrections found.

We need to root for Buff to win. KC holds the H2H tiebreaker with us as well as fewer conference losses so they are the greatest danger today to our #1 seed. We are 3 games up on Buff even with the loss, so forget them, they are not a threat currently and we still have a chance to put them away the final game of the season. There is no way to strengthen our position against KC. We have to hope for others to do so.

All that being said, we in out, we are in, maybe just not the #1 seed, but at least home field advantage.

  8. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Mike, totally with you on Monday Night Football. In my 20’s, we used to have a spot where a pretty large group of us (all fans of different teams) would gather to watch the Monday night game. It was a weekly event, and it was a great time. Now I usually can’t even be bothered to watch unless it’s our Dolphins playing. The spectacle has been diluted.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Exactly, we had this bar we went to every Monday night game in the Dorchester area of Charleston. Cheap pitchers of beer and free Dominos pizza at halftime. Almost every Monday night there was enough pizza for everyone to eat half a large pizza.

      Ahh, those were the days!

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It didn’t even matter who was playing because Monday Night Football was an event, and when it was your team, it was extra special.

Now it’s just one of many, or sometimes -like our Monday night game this week- two of many, lol.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hear ya Kong! That MNF music, the lead up/preview of the stars in the game, was just great theater. To me, that’s over and done with, they just can’t duplicate it

  9. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

GOOD FOR HIM! (I wonder if our cap already assumed he WOULD make the bonuses?)

Raheem Mostert to a two-year contract this past offseason worth $5.6 million but could get to $7.6 million due on incentives ($1 million in each year).

The 31-year-old needed to gain 600 offensive yards to make $500,000 and 900 offensive yards to make another $500,000. This season, Mostert has already hit both thresholds to earn his incentives, paying him an extra $1 million.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hard not to root for Mostert. A guy with talent who couldn’t stay healthy enough to play a full season, but who is showing that even at 31, he has the talent and skill to be a league leader when he is healthy, and of course was given the opportunity to be the lead back.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So I did some research. Incentives are categorized as either likely to be met or unlikely to be met (based upon the previous year’s performance)

In the case of Mostert, because he had over 600 yards last season that was considered Likely and was baked into the 2023 cap calculations. Because he DID NOT reach 900 yards that goal was deamed unlikely to meet so that 500K was NOT calculated into this year’s cap and now has to be taken out of next year’s cap (which was unaccounted for) and now made us another 1/2 Million over the cap for next season.

The hits just keep on coming.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I just thought about it some more, and because the way the rule was written, now that Mostert HAS run for 900 yards this season, the extra 500K that he earned this season will go on next years cap, but SO WILL THE ASSUMED $1M for him to do it again next year. So this week Mostert cost us $1.5 million against next year’s cap. (if he doesn’t make the incentive next year, we will get a credit back in the following year’s cap)

  10. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Mostert put on more muscle this offseason and worked hard to be durable for this year. It seems to be working, now if Achane can get a little of that knowledge after this season, then we’d be golden.

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It’s cool but I think still under the radar a bit
that we have the best FB in the AFC,
esp. since that’s a position McDaniel utilizes so often and well.

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If we stuff up the lanes and also seal the edge
on King Henry, we can outscore Levis.

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

who is showing that even at 31, he has the talent and skill to be a league leader when he is healthy
    —————
He said he has low mileage over his career. Learned late how to take care of his body and be more durable. It shows. He plays/looks like a RB much younger than 31.

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

That little tidbit about likely to achieve and unlikely to achieve performance bonuses was interesting to me. I learned something new. I had no idea that the bonuses came out of next year’s cap if they were unlikely to meet goals.

Great list and write Mike E. But I’m sorry…. I just want the Bills out of the picture and move on from there. Win the the Division — and they already have the only win on us where we looked clueless. And truthfully the #1 seed is a toss up anyhow given our last 3 games.

“Tua Tagovailoa, who I was with, Brian Flores – same New England way – he was broken for Brian Flores the way he treated him, the way that he coached him. And what happens? Mike McDaniel comes in. He restores his confidence. He gets it back, and now he’s an MVP candidate.”

  19. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Considering everything we’ve heard and know about Brian Flores, do we still hate Minkah Fitzpatrick for forcing his way out, or do we have a little bit of respect for the fact he said ‘eff this, I ain’t putting up with this’ and took control of his own situation?

    31. Sedrick Van Pran OC Georgia
    63. Xavier Worthy WR Texas
    159. Nazir Stackhouse DT Georgia
    168. Anthony Belton OT NC State
    191. Aaron Casey LB Indiana
    223. Erick All TE Iowa

Worthy is also a great punt returner. Not sure how fast he is, but he hit 22.7 mph on a punt return this season. What I like even more is his route running and his YAC ability.

  23. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Tagovailoa choked up Thursday when speaking about right tackle Austin Jackson’s contract extension and said that there were things that were said about Jackson by the previous coaching staff “that you know aren’t true but they get planted in your head.”

““And then you have someone like Mike and his coaching staff come in and basically build you back up. And it’s not just Austin. It’s really everyone that’s been here for some time and [to] kind of give you that renewed confidence in yourself to just go out there and play the way you’ve played.”

Austin Jackson’s success started with mental toughness
The Miami Dolphins and Austin Jackson agreed on a new contract ahead of Week 14.

    By Jacob Mendel@JMendel94 Dec 9, 2023, 9:55am EST 1 Comment / 1 New

Austin Jackson inked a three-year extension with the Miami Dolphins earlier this week to start at right tackle for the foreseeable future. The former USC lineman has allowed two sacks in 12 games this season, and his nine hurries allowed rank fifth among all tackles with at least 315 pass-blocking snaps this season.

The Dolphins declined the former first-round pick’s fifth-year option after he played just 84 snaps in 2022. That said, Jackson is having career-year in coach Mike McDaniel’s system, anchoring an offensive line that allows just 1.5 sacks per game.

“So earlier in my career, I was the fifth tackle taken in the first round,” Jackson said on Thursday. “First-round draft pick. I had high expectations. I had high expectations and every time I didn’t perform, it was noted and highlighted. It was very much so highlighted, to say the least. But that just made me a better football player at the end of the day. I’m very tough. I understand this is football. There are certain things that are done in football.

“The only thing you can do is not take it too personal. So I just moved on from that, took what I needed to get better, and got better.”

Miami started Jackson at left tackle as a rookie. He struggled at times, allowing four sacks and 29 pressures in 848 snaps played. The 20-year-old rookie was one of three rookies starting on the offensive line, joining second-round pick Robert Hunt and fourth-round selection Solomon Kindley.

He was sandwiched between Liam Eichenberg and Michael Deiter as the starting left guard in 2021 and was penalized 12 times, allowing 41 hurries throughout 1,096 snaps.

McDaniel was named head coach ahead of the 2022 season and needed just one conversation to believe Jackson could turn the corner as a starting tackle.

“All I took from my interaction with him is a very ambitious, goal-oriented, driven professional athlete,” McDaniel said of his first time meeting Jackson. “Then I kind of try to put myself in people’s shoes, and it’s never going to draw tears of sorrow, but I think it’s a shame that people overlook – it’s great to be picked in the first round as a 20-year-old. Awesome. There’s also a lot of burden with that.

“In that, every person that gets drafted every year in the first round, I know one thing they don’t want to be. Everybody wants to be their best. So then you look at the film and you match it with the person that you’re meeting. I think it’s important to treat every individual with full trust, because I’m tough enough if they break trust. You treat them with full trust and give them the opportunity.”

Despite road bumps early, McDaniel spent time with Jackson once he arrived in Miami, and provided him with everything he needed to succeed at right tackle.

“[McDaniel] definitely took the time to really see who I was as a player with his own eyes,” Jackson said. “I appreciate that. He really just took the time to sit down with me, sit down and talk with the team. He’s given me every opportunity and every tool to be great, so I’m thankful for that. It makes me really work hard, and I appreciate that.”

Jackson’s extension will keep him in Miami through the 2026 season.

“I’m excited and extremely grateful,” he said. “If you know my journey here, it’s been one with a lot of, I don’t know, I guess stuff to remember. There’s been a lot that went on, but I’m just glad that I got a place that allowed me to work on my craft and get better every day. I’m just looking forward to keep doing that.””

    Vic speaks….

Dolphins DC Vic Fangio explains the challenges in facing Derrick Henry, DeAndre Hopkins
Derrick Henry ranks second in rushing yards with 841 through 12 games.

    By Jacob Mendel@JMendel94 Dec 9, 2023, 10:51am EST 1 Comment / 1 New

Football is a complex game featuring 22 players on the field, but sometimes it’s best to keep things simple. The Tennessee Titans rank No. 25 with an average of 17.8 points per game — that drops to a league-low 12.3 points on the road.

The Miami Dolphins defense has allowed just four yards per play since Week 9 — containing running back Derrick Henry and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins will determine if that average holds for another week.

Henry, 29, is second with 841 rushing yards throughout 12 games. He’s scored eight rushing touchdowns and averages 4.3 yards per carry on the ground as Tennesse’s lead back.

“You have to do a good job up front, first and foremost,” Dolphins’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said of stopping Henry. “You can’t get pushed back. You can’t be blocked out of your assignment and let him get rolling because once he gets rolling, he’s a load. That’s why he’s probably headed to the Hall of Fame as a running back.”

Miami’s run defense ranks eighth, allowing 96.6 rushing yards per game — that’s dropped to 67.7 over the last three games. Sunday’s game against Washington was the first time opposing running backs earned over 100 rushing yards against Vic Fangio’s defense since Week 6.

Hopkins leads the Titans with 50 receptions on 95 targets, averaging roughly 65 receiving yards. He’s also scored five touchdowns throughout 12 games. The 11th-year receiver has half the team’s touchdown receptions and 774 of the team’s 2,470 receiving yards.

“Hopkins is a unique wide receiver,” Fangio said. He’s been a really good wide receiver for a long time in the league. Great hands, great body control. Has a big catch radius. Savvy with his routes. The quarterback knows that, and he’s trying to throw it to him.

“[Quarterback Wil Levis has] a really good arm. He has a really quick release. I’ve been impressed with what they’ve been able to do.”

Miami’s 203.6 passing yards allowed per game ranks No 9 through 13 weeks. The Dolphins enter Week 14 with a perfect 4-0 record at Hard Rock Stadium. Slowing Henry and Hopkins on Monday Night Football goes a long way in pushing that streak to five.

Duke Set to Become New Director of Dolphins Defense
Duke Riley will be called on to replace Jerome Baker as Miami’s every-down inside linebacker and the signal-caller of the defense
    OMAR KELLY58 MINUTES AGO

When duty calls, Duke Riley takes pride in answering.

That’s been the linebacker’s role since entering the NFL seven years ago as a former LSU standout selected in the third round of the 2017 draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

Even though he’s changed teams a couple of times, joining the Miami Dolphins in 2020 as a free agent after stints with the Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles, Riley is still viewed as a special teams standout, coverage specialist inside linebacker, and fill-in starter in NFL circles.

And for the next few weeks, with Jerome Baker, a six-year starter, sidelined by an MCL sprain he sustained in Miami’s 45-15 win over the Washington Commanders, Riley won’t just become a starter.

Riley will become the green dot player, which means he’s the defensive connection to the coaching staff, who speak into his helmet. That makes Riley the player responsible for relaying the play call, and making sure everyone on the defense is in the right position and playing the right scheme.

    Duke relaying the calls

“I’ve been seeing Duke itching all year,” pass rusher Bradley Chubb said. “Every time his number was called, he stepped up in a big way… When one guy goes down, it’s an opportunity for another guy. He’s been making the most of that opportunity….It’s dope to see him come into that role and when he came into the game, taking over the defense and taking over the calls, and doing whatever he needed to do to help us come through with that win.”

According to ProFootballFocus, an analytical site that grades every NFL player each week, Riley was the top performing inside linebacker for his performance against the Commanders, a game where he contributed eight tackles and forced a fumble in his 31 defensive snaps.

“Duke, or whoever it is, who has to step up and play more, will be ready and I’m sure of that,” defensive tackle Christian Wilkins said. “Obviously you don’t ever like to lose guys, but if other guys who we know are reliable and dependable can step up, that’d be great.”

Dolphins view Riley as an NFL starter

The Dolphins last offseason re-signed Riley, who contributed 45 tackles, one sack and two pass deflections in his 368 defensive snaps in 2022, to a two-year deal that was worth $5 million. And at one point it appeared he was competing for a starting role during the offseason program and training camp.

“He competed and really pushed ‘Bake’ immensely to be where he’s at,” coach Mike McDaniel said, referring to Riley’s strong practices, where he spent most of the offseason as the starter while David Long Jr. was sidelined by a hamstring strain. “We’ve known the entire season if he’s in there, we’re expecting things to progress as they normally would because he’s that type of player that’s capable.

“It’s one of those positions that we have some good players at. So, [I’m] happy for his opportunity because I know he’ll take full advantage of it.”

While Riley has come to terms with who he is as an NFL player, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want more for himself. However, he’s found joy in filling his role, and being a leader of Miami’s special teams unit.

“At the end of the day, in this league and every phase of life, you’ve just got to control what you can control. If you’re not up even though you want to be, whatever it may be, you’ve just got to control what you can control and make the most out of the opportunity that you do have,” said Riley, who has started 23 NFL games. “[Every week] I’m preparing as a starter on defense regardless. Even if I was a fourth-string guy, I would prepare like I’m a starter. It’s just who I am. Every single day I come to work, my main focus is to be better than I was yesterday, and to bring somebody along with me every single day. So that’s my goal.”

  34. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Funny thing about Jackson being the 5th OT is he is actually playing better than at least 1 OT taken ahead of him

That was a really good draft for OTs but the perception at the time was after the first 4, there’s a falloff

Tristen Wirfs and Andrew Thomas are both playing well

    Becton has barely played

Jedrick Willis has been good but he is on IR this year. Prior to this year he was much better than Jackson

When we drafted Jackson we knew he was a project
    He was young and inexperienwced

Austin Jackson needing time was expected and that’s why he wasn’t one of the big 4 in that draft – but the talent is there

People decided not to be patient even though all signs pointed to Jackson being a project

    Sometimes our fans are insufferable

  35. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Kinda my point that others seemed to disagree with…”The Miami Dolphins likely will lean on the third-year player’s versatility again Monday night and have Eichenberg replace starting right guard Robert Hunt, who likely will be shut down for a couple practices and games because of the left hamstring injury he suffered a month ago aggravated in Sunday’s 45-15 win against the Washington Commanders.”

Did we really need Hunt to play in the Commanders’ game? Really, his contribution would have made the difference in a 30-point win? And if we gave him another week’s rest or two, he might be good for the year. Oh well…now he’s lost, however long’s he’s lost….those hammies are a bitch. Hope we see him in the playoffs or sooner, but doubtful, imo.

Baker was placed on IR, which means earliest he could come back would be our last game against the Bills (unless I have my math wrong).

  42. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Team is 11-2 at The Rock in the McDaniel Era. Pretty impressive given that a lot of jerseys not aqua, orange or white in the stands.

I know a lot of you guys don’t hit links, but this one will make your day (and be sure to check out each vid of the plays on the list). Loved the hook and latteral narrated by the old school NFL films guy.

  44. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

How many more guys can we lift from IR? If we lift Brooks, aren’t we out, or do we have one more?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think as of right now, we can still lift two players. And we have Brooks in the 21 day window, with Baker and EZ potentially coming back this year. So one of those guys will miss out.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I thought we were down to 1 we could bring back??? So it would be either Brooks, Baker, Wynn or EZ.

  47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not 100% sure but I thought the Dolphins were out of IR returns. Now Chris Brooks was designated to return from IR but they haven’t activated him yet. I guess as long as they don’t activate Brooks, Baker can use that spot. I kind of wanted to have Brooks available for the playoffs and end of season

The battle of attrition is most sports but especially in football because of the nature of the game. I’d say pitching in baseball is 2nd.

Next man up seems to have worked pretty good so far, the OL replacements weren’t so good early on, but very good as of late, with Phillips, Baker and Holland out AVG, Riley and Jones have filled in admirably

We’re not only star studded at the top, but deep, so why not us in February?

The Steve curse 🤬 will be lifted in 2 weeks, when I move back to Florida 😜

      How do you make it?

      • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I can post the recipe. It makes A LOT! I give it away to friends. I mix it in a big stockpot, the turkey fryer size. Use a cordless drill with a paint stirrer attachment to mix it.

How do I post a picture I have on my phone? Would be much simpler than typing this recipe on here.

We want Buff to win today because the win will not help them against us in the race for the division but it will give KC their 2nd conference loss and a loss overall to keep them a full game plus back from us in the 1 seed race. We already have two conference losses and that tie breaker comes before our lousy SOV

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

It goes in the egg whites you add at the end. Kind of like a meringue. Sort of floats on top. I don’t like it on it when it’s first made, takes up room in my cup but it gets incorporated in the whole thing in time and makes it creamier. 😂

Loved it Cav. Transatlantic humour with US and UK based jokes – some of the latter may miss the target if you don’t follow soccer. Watch at least 3 episodes to give it time. Didn’t want it to end. M a big fan and put me onto it.
