2023 Season – Game 13 – Titans @ Dolphins MNF

The Dolphins come home to Hard Rock Stadium and get an extra day of rest when they face off in a Monday Night Matchup against the Tennessee Titans. For those of you who don’t know, I used to love the Dolphins playing in a Monday Night Football affair. You also know how I lament the fact that it is no longer the NFL marquis matchup it used to be, and if my feelings aren’t enough to prove it, this is actually a Monday Night Doubleheader, the other game being the NY Giants hosting the Green Bay Packers. As a football fan before the likes of the NFL Sunday Ticket, nothing was more exciting than having the Dolphins slotted to play on Monday Night Football. With Thursday Night Football, Sunday Night Football and soon to come Saturday Football, it’s really just another game, which in my mind is a shame.

The Dolphins have a lengthy injury list, and those include LT Terron Armstead and RG Robert Hunt, and of course LB Jerome Baker, all who did not practice this week. Armstead still has a chance, but if I had to make a guess, I’d say Hunt won’t be playing this week. Good news is G Robert Jones is back at practice and full practice. T Kendall Lamm also did not practice which would give T Kion Smith another start if Armstead doesn’t go. RB Raheem Mostert gets these “maintenance” days which translates to veteran rest, and he’s good to go for Monday night, as well as De’Von Achane who participated in full and is no longer on the injury report. TE Durham Smythe did not practice but I suspect he will play Monday Night.

The Titans at 4-8 are having a miserable season, but QB Will Levis is a bright spot in the murky darkness. WR DeAndre Hopkins is having a nice comeback year, with 50 receptions for 774 yards and 5 TD’s. RB Derrick Henry is 2nd in the NFL just ahead of our own Raheem Mostert with 841 yards rushing and 8 TD’s. I don’t need to tell you all which back leads in the NFL in rushing TD’s, but it’s so much fun to say Raheem Mostert with 14! Mostert trails Henry by only 13 yards so let’s hope Mostert takes over 2nd place after this game. The Titans offense is 25th in the NFL scoring 17.8 points per game and the defense is mid pack at 16th, allowing 21.3 points per game. The Dolphins are 2nd in the NFL in scoring at 32 points per game and on defense, have improved to 21st allowing 22.2 points per game. Our defense has really been killing it, and although it was thought RB Derrick Henry may miss the game with a concussion, he will be playing. First we lost OLB Jaelan Phillips for the season and now LB Jerome Baker is week to week. AVG and Emmanuel Ogbah have done well in Phillips stead, and LB Duke Riley played his best game as a Miami Dolphins last week against the Commanders. It’s obviously a tough task trying to bring King Henry down at 6’3 247, so this defense will have to get to Henry early and not allow him to get a head of steam.

The Dolphins signed DE Jason Pierre-Paul, and also signed big DT Justin Ellis to the PS this week. Ellis is a massive 6’2 350 nose tackle type of DT who may help down the stretch as we know our DT’s all play tons of snaps. I think JPP will be playing mostly on the D-line either at end or maybe even tackle in pass russ situations. Both Sieler and Wilkins have been over 75% of the defensive snaps, so both Ogbah and JPP can give these guys a breather so they’re ready for the championship run. On offense, WR River Cracraft is back, although Tyreek Hill is the show in Miami. WR Jaylen Waddle is a distant 2nd to Tyreek, Waddle has almost exactly HALF the receiving yards (743) of Hill (1481) and 1/4 of the TD’s (3) to Hill’s (12). Still, Waddle is important as he’s always a threat, but he’s had a tough season with some untimely drops. RB Jeff Wilson seems as the break glass in case of emergency back with Mostert and Achane sharing very productive carries. WR Cedrick Wilson Jr. has quietly done some good things although the last 2 games he was not targeted.

Now that the Dolphins are the #1 seed, they have a target on their back, but also have a target set for themselves, to keep the #1 seed and play every post season game, with the exception of the Super Bowl at home at Hard Rock. Will Levis is a capable QB, and while his completion percentage is garbage at less than 60%, he has 7 TD’s and only 2 INT’s, splitting the season equally, and sharing a 2-4 record with QB Ryan Tannehill, who this season had 2 TD’s and 6 INT’s. Titans TE Chigoziem Okonkwo has the 2nd most receptions (35) behind WR DeAndre Hopkins (50) followed by RB Tyjae Spears with 33. We need to shut down King Henry and let our new dominant secondary and pass rush limit the Levis to Hopkins connection and we should be able to win this game. No trap games, every game must result in a W to maintain that all important home field advantage.

Could play out in a number of ways.

      Ravens have

      @Jags
      @Niners
      Home v Phins
      Home v Steelers

      Our last 3 are:

      Home v Dallas
      @ Ravens
      Home v Bills

      • boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

Yea I guess pretty similar difficulty? What I meant was there is a high probability that the winner of the Baltimore gsme is gonna be the 1 seed.

We’ll take the win from the Bills tonight.

  49. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

All of this is leading up to our game against the Ravens. And YES, we can whip them!

  50. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Broncos only 1 game behind Chiefs and have Lions, Pats, Chargers and Raiders left. Chiefs have Pats, Raiders, Bengals and Chargers.

  51. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Perfect scenario still in play. Just need to win our next two and have the Bills lose next week to the Cowboys.

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Bills won, so knocked KC back,
but Denver, Browns, and Cincy won,
    so Bills are still11th ranked.

    Perfect!

  53. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Bills at 7-6 have 5 other 7-6 teams ahead of them in the playoff rankings. They are still 11th seed right now.

They have been playing very well last 3 games. Should have also beaten Philly in Philly. Don’t want to see them in the playoffs.

We need a Dallas win in Buffalo next week, but I don’t see it.

Bills have 2 easy games after the cowboys. If they beat Dallas, they will be in the playoffs. They will probably be 10-6 coming into Miami.

We could win our next 2 then lose our next 2 after that then have Bills at home we’d be 11-5. That game would decide who wins the division as Bills would have the head to head on us if they were to beat us.

We’d be a WC team headed to KC or Buffalo.

This is why I wanted Bills to lose vs KC.

If the Bills lost this game then lost to Dallas, they would have been almost eliminated from the playoffs. Now, they still have everything to fight for, including the division. This scenario is not farfetched at all.

Oh, fuck! Someone tell me to STFU!

  54. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Our next 3 games are at home where we are undefeated. Take care of our own business and we are guaranteed to win the division by the 3rd win.

  55. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Sheesh, flag-fest

  56. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Just for perspective…

The Eagles and Cowboys currently have a combined 5 losses (obviously, one will lose this evening, making it 6 combined losses). The Bills have 6 losses this season! LOL

  57. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Mahomes being that angry at the refs because they threw the flag when his WR lined up offsides is effing hilarious. Dude was egregiously offsides, but he thinks the refs shouldn’t throw flags on them in those moments, lol.

  59. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Great results across the board yesterday except for the Ravens winning. Too bad they were able to pull it out or we would have been two games ahead of everyone (after our win tonight) Oh well, it looks like we are heading to an early playoff game week 17 against the Ravens.

  60. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

“ 5. I think I love this little note from the week in Miami: The turf was replaced Tuesday night at Hard Rock Stadium, and the Tennessee-Miami game tonight will be the first NFL game played on the new grass. The turf comes from an 80-acre sod farm in Loxahatchee Groves, Fla., 61 miles north of the stadium. The Dolphins own the sod farm; the team bought the acreage and established the place in 2019 in a quality-control effort ensuring the best field they can have through the year. They can replace the turf, easily, on short notice, with trucks hauling it from an hour away. They change out the grass eight to 10 times a year. This farm can grow about 15 fields at once, and it takes about a year to grow one of the fields to full maturity before it is transplanted.” – Peter King

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Hey, anyone know who’s on Monday Night Football tonight?

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The games yesterday resulted in something else I love to see.

NE now has a little e next to their entry in the AFCE standings.
    It stands for ELIMINATED!!!!

Even though they won their game!
So their jubilation in finding an offense with Zappe
was smashed at finding out it’s too late to save their season
and only worsened their draft pick.

Actually, though, now that they are out of the PO,
I’d be fine if NE won out and helped us secure our spot.

  64. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Win tonight and we have a 2 game lead over KC, which has a h2h tie-breaker over us. Playing in KC, with the hfa was always something to be avoided at all costs imho, so I’m good with yesterday’s results (except for the Rams giving a W to the carrion on a silver platter tied with a bow).

Regardless (almost) of what happens, we have a rematch vs. the Bills for the div with hfa in Jan and we need to take care of business then, divisionally. If we can’t do that, then an appearance in the play-offs would likely be just that. Not a run.

Our whole season has been geared up towards the last 3 games. Our whole emphasis from our HC has been to get the team as healthy as possible and prepared as possible for that and beyond. We aren’t making anywhere near as many false starts as we did. The C/QB exchange is night and day. We are getting pressures and sacks a plenty. The INTs have started to come. We are running the ball effectively and committing to the run (at least in H2 – we are still pass happy in H1 when we get all the gaudy numbers until teams adjust and think it might be a good idea to cover Reek with a S too). Tua had some picks, but pitched a perfect game (virtually) last time out. We are relatively healthy as a team going down the stretch and Tua has done a great job avoiding situations where he might get hurt thus far. Even STs are getting better. All the metrics are improving and trending upwards.

We are getting to the real start of the race now, but what we mustn’t do, on an individual basis, is have our eyes on the prize. Just beat the Titans. The end.
