2023 Season – Game 16 – Dolphins @ Ravens

December football can lead to epic matchups, and we most definitely have one here as the Dolphins travel to Baltimore to play the AFC leading (12-3) Baltimore Ravens. The last time we played the Ravens in Baltimore was that wild 4th quarter comeback win, generated by QB Tua Tagovailoa in which the Dolphins scored 28 4th quarter points to knock off the Ravens 42-38. The Dolphins were down 35-14 to begin the 4th quarter. After the game, pundits and commentators alike made excuses for the Ravens who had an injury riddled secondary. I never hear those same excuses and concessions when we’re playing without 4/5 of our starting Offensive Line, but so be it.

This is a very difficult game to predict, but I don’t think the scoring total goes anywhere near last year’s wild shootout. While the Dolphins defense overall has allowed 20.9 points per game, over the last 8 games the Dolphins defense has been better, allowing only 15.8 points per game. Conversely, the Ravens defense overall is allowing only 16.3 points per game, but over the last 8 games, the Ravens have allowed 18.3 points per game. I think our defense has often been the better unit. While our offense overall has scored 30.9 points per game, we’re scoring 27.8 points per game over the last 8 games. Defense wins championships, and we’re going to need to rely on our defense to beat the Ravens.

We all know we have injuries littering our roster, but despite playing with 4 different O-line starters, we’re still getting it done. RG Robert Hunt’s status is still up in the air. WR Jaylen Waddle is OUT, which means there will probably be a combination of Robbie Chosen, Chase Claypool, Cedrick Wilson and Braxton Berrios to replace Waddle. Wilson has been getting a fair amount of targets in the last few games, but I think the run game will be the key for us. The Ravens have allowed 1551 yards rushing, while our defense is more stingy at 1362 yards. We’re going to have 4 RB’s active, Mostert, Achane, Wilson and Brooks plus FB Alec Ingold. Like I’ve mentioned on the blog, I don’t really have a good idea of how this game will play out, but I won’t be surprised if it’s a lower scoring game, both teams under 30 points each, and that we run the ball a fair amount, more than we throw.

I’m amazed at how good the O-line has been considering we’re playing without our starting LG Isaiah Wynn (IR), starting OC (Connor Williams (IR), starting RG Robert Hunt (QUESTIONABLE), and starting RT Austin Jackson (QUESTIONABLE). OG Lester Cotton filled in admirably, as did OG Robert Jones who played his best game of the season at RG. Liam Eichenberg has quietly become a very valuable player, perhaps becoming our future OC. What an amazing turnaround for Eichenberg who was drafted as an OT/G, failed at both positions early on in his career, but played better at OG this season as it went on, and now is succeeding at playing C after starter Connor Williams went down for the season in Game 9 against the Chargers. Besides Eichenberg, both swing tackles have been invaluable, Kendall Lamm who played RT with starter Austin Jackson out and Kion Smith who stepped in played LT plenty of times to replace oft injured LT Terron Armstead. To Armstead’s credit, he plays through injuries and has done his best to stay on the field despite his body failing him.

I think we all know this game is a huge one, I look at this as playoff game #1. December, which has annually been a time this team has fallen out of contention is different this year with our Dolphins at 3-1 in December in 2023. The Ravens being the #1 seed in the AFC couldn’t be tougher team to face, especially in their house. QB Lamar Jackson is a game changer, the most talented, most dangerous guy on the field. In my opinion, as he goes, the Ravens go. This is not so with the Miami Dolphins. Tua can have an average day and the Dolphins can win, but the Ravens live and die with Lamar Jackson. Jackson doesn’t turn the ball over much at all with a 1.6 INT %, less than our own careful QB Tua Tagovailoa at 2.0%. Jackson has thrown 19 TD’s against only 7 INT’s. The big difference though is Lamar Jackson who also has 786 yards rushing and 5 rushing TD’s. For reference, Jackson leads the Ravens in rushing yards ahead of their 2nd leading rusher big back Gus Edwards with 694 yards. Edwards is the big goal line threat though with 12 rushing TD’s. It’s a difficult task to control Lamar Jackson, when the pass rush is too aggressive and unsuccessful, he can feast through the air or escape and pick up huge chunks of yards. I think it’s paramount that we stop Gus Edwards. They no longer have their version of De’Von Achane in RB Keaton Mitchell, who tore his ACL and is out for the season. Contain the run game, and when you get your hands on Lamar Jackson, take him down, or else! Easier said than done!

I think all our backs, even seldom used RB Chris Brooks may get some action today. With Waddle OUT, I’m not sure we have a WR that’s going to step up and replace him adequately. The O-line has been run blocking well, and I think that’s how we’re going to roll Sunday afternoon. NFL playoff games are usually close to the vest affairs, I expect that to be the case for this game. Once again, the Ravens run defense isn’t their strength, their pass rush is. Quick passing of course offsets a strong pass rush, and that’s how our offense is designed and how our QB Tua Tagovailoa is most comfortable operating. Make him hold the ball, and we’ve seen some ugly. Running effectively opens up the pass game so we need to run the ball well. I look forward to watching this game, I think we’re up to the task, I don’t feel like this game or team is too much for us. I look forward to our team putting an exclamation on this season by taking down the big and bad Ravens in their house.

Ravens have been blowing teams out, when they’ve been winning the TO battle, don’t turn it over and it’s game on

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

One thing in common in every Ravens loss was the opposing team rushed 30 times or more.

      Colts 35-139
      Steelers 30-87
      Browns 36-178

With the exception of the Steelers game, in which the TOP was pretty equal, almost exactly split 3o minutes per team, both the Browns and the Colts had a decent edge in TOP against the Ravens.

The NFL did the right thing by bumping the previously scheduled Bills/Pats game to the Dolphins/Ravens game. At least in the NY/NJ area.🙂

All I want is one more win so we have at least one home game in the playoffs. The 1 seed would be nice to get a rest but if we are playing well I don’t necessarily like the week off

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Well, it works both ways. It will give guys who are injured time to heal up, so I would prefer that. I’m not worried about being flat. I think this team is hungry!

Nice to be a Superbowl contender. With all the talk about seedings and such think we sometimes forget we are one for the first time in a very long time. Same time — there are like 8 or 9 of them. So don’t be wondering whether it is Tua or Tyreek going to Disney World quite yet.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

This is true. We also need to beat an AFC powerhouse or two over the next few weeks for us to be considered a true Super Bowl contender in my opinion.

While that’s true to a degree, once the playoffs start everything resets and only the next game matters.

It’s funny, just thinking about how Krishna was saying we should keep Robert Hunt out so he can get healthy, and with the exception of the one game a few weeks ago where he played and got hurt, the Dolphins have done just that. I doubt he plays Sunday, they’re resting him and letting him fully healy for maybe the last week against Buffalo, or maybe the playoffs.

  15. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

thank Mike, great write. I pretty much agree with you on all of it. We have to start the game strong. If not then it might be a blow out. Last year we came back. I just really hope the score is close going into the halftime.

  16. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Tim,

I get that it resets, but tell me this, would you rather go into the playoffs having beat NONE of the teams that are in the playoffs for the AFC? We need to win at least one of these teams in the next two games or it will make our playoffs exponentially more difficult.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

      Games not teams

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s important that we play a strong game this week. It won’t be the end of the world if we lose a close game, but we absolutely can’t get blown out. That happens, I wonder about this team’s psyche playing Buffalo for the division.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah of course I want us to beat every team. Just saying it won’t matter if you win playoff games. If we get to the AFC championship game nobody is going to care who we didn’t beat during the RS.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

No Mike, but I don’t love our chances playing Buffalo for the division title the last game of the year. They’ve had our number for years now.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Tim, yes, but if we don’t win at least one of these next two games winning playoff games is going to much more difficult.

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brian, the way I look at it is we’re either good enough or we’re not. I’m just enjoying the ride and rooting for the best. I’m not really nervous or anything. I’m more excited to see how far we can go.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The strange thing is that we can actually get blown out by the Ravens, but if we beat the Bills, it won’t matter that much until if/when we have to face the Ravens again in their house.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I get the impression that we’re saving Hunt and Holland for game 17 against the Bills

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The last drive to win the game against Dallas gave me a lot of confidence as a fan. We executed perfectly. Ball control, clock management, moved the chains to get into FG range and made the kick with no time left on the clock.🙂

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The Dolphins have given up only 206 yards rushing to QBs all year.
    That’s 13.7 yards per game.
against Allen, Herbert, Mahomes, Hurts, R,Wilson, Z. Wilson, D. Jones, Prescott, and other lesser known but mobile QBs.

If we hold Lamar to less than 20 yards, we’ll win this game.

DOLPHINS FACE THE RAVENS ON WHAT COULD BE THE BATTLE FOR THE 1ST SEED
    Posted by Jacobo Zakay | Dec 30, 2023 | Dolphins News | 0

This Sunday, many teams will have their playoff fate decided, and although the Dolphins already clinched a playoff spot, they now get a chance to clinch the AFC East and compete for the first overall seed in the AFC, and get home-field advantage in the playoffs and a bye week. For that reason, many people are saying this might be the Dolphin’s most important regular season game in over 20 years, and I agree. This is the first time in my lifetime that the Dolphins could potentially get the number one seed in the AFC, and that’s why I also consider this game the most important regular season game of my life so far.

We know the Dolphins have had a lot of success this year on both sides of the ball, but so have the Ravens, who currently have the best record in the NFL, and it’s not for no reason. The Ravens have the number one scoring defense in the entire NFL, allowing only 16.3 points per game. They also lead the league with 54 sacks and rank second with 26 takeaways. The one aspect of their defense that is the weakest is their run defense. I am not saying it is bad, but it’s not their bright spot. In any case, the Dolphins should try to run the ball as much as possible, especially since Jaylen Waddle has officially been ruled out for the game.

Another thing to consider is the Ravens’ Linebacker duo, which consists of Raquon Smith and Patrick Queen, a deadly pair. This is really bad news for the Dolphins, who love to throw the ball down the middle of the field, and these linebackers are great at everything, including coverage. Tua has to be careful and not put his receivers in a position where they can get hurt by one of these linebackers, he still needs to throw the ball down the middle of the field, he just has to be careful about that and about turnovers.

The Ravens are coming off a short week after playing the 49ers in San Francisco on Monday night, which gives a good advantage to the Dolphins, who had almost two days more rest. The Dolphins are going to have to take advantage of this and make it the most physical game they have played this season to drain the Ravens; as I said before, run the ball. As long as the Dolphins run the ball and protect the ball, they should be able to walk out of Baltimore with the win.

Now, on the other side of things, the Dolphin’s defense is going to be facing its hardest task going against Lamar Jackson and his offense. We all know of the success this defense has had since Jalen Ramsey came back, but playing against Lamar Jackson is different than anybody else. Of course, there are other quarterbacks that can run the ball, but none of them can do it quite like Lamar. Lamar has a special ability to extend the play while keeping his eyes downfield and not forcing the run unless he has to, which makes it extremely difficult for defenses defending him because they never know when he might just take off and run for thirty yards and a first down. It is also incredibly hard to sack him, and he seems to be able to escape almost any pressure, so if the Defense wants to get to him is going to have to be patient and in a team effort, meaning the front four have to rush as a unit not leaving any escape option for Lamar and just contain him and trap him in the pocket. I am sure Vic Fangio is going to consider having a spy to limit Lamar Jackson from running so much.

But even if you stop Lamar, you still have to stop their run game, which leads the league in yards per game. That’s why being physical at the line of scrimmage is going to determine this game. Zach Sieler and Christina Wilkins will be important parts of the gameplan as they will have to do everything in their power to limit their run game, which opens up their passing and play-action game.

The Ravens tend to struggle in the 4th quarter like we have seen on many occasions this year and even a couple of times last year, including that Dolphins game where the Dolphins came back down twenty-one points in the 4th quarter. This doesn’t mean that the Dolphins should wait until the 4th quarter to start playing their best, the complete opposite, they need a fast start and that way by the end of the game you don’t have to worry about the Ravens destroying you in the 4th quarter, because they won’t.

In summary, the Dolphins have to run the ball, protect the ball, be physical, and get off to a fast start. If they do all of this, then they will easily win this game. Honestly it won’t be an easy game by any means, this is the team with the best record in football we are taking about, but if they can attack their weaknesses and take advantage of their extra day of rest it shouldn’t be as hard as it looks. Let’s go win the game and win the division.

    #FinsUp.

I agree with a lot of the sentiment about this not being the end of the world if we lose. It’s a wonderful time to support team Dolphins and this has been a great season. Even if we don’t win it all, I can’t help but think we have a lot of pieces in place to stay relevant for some time, mainly in the coaching department. One thing this season has brought into sharp focus is how badly we’ve been coached for too long.

On a personal note, I suffered a major trauma whilst putting up Xmas lights this year, hence my absence recently (good to know I’ve had a positive impact on UK site activity still 😎). Below is the outcome. Without going into too much detail, my elbow was the crumple zone for a 10′ gravity experiment. 200lbs is too much force and my lower arm was actually 180 in the opposite direction when I landed. Sir Isaac Newton definitely chose the better option having an apple fall on his head.

Still in sling and banged up with no driving. Possible MRI scan on 11th depending on progress to assess ligament damage/ operation options and may lose some range of movement but should be OK for trading camp 24 if Grier calls my name.

Sticking with ground level lights Xmas 24.

With you 100% on that. The bone under my clothes was at a “Joe Theismann type angle. Remembering that injury I was petrified of feeling blood. It did bleed internally, but it could have been so much worse. Dodged a bullet there

I thought MM would be sitting players and resting them for the showdown with Bills in week 18.

No Mostert, no Waddle, no Hunt, no Holland = sucks!

  70. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We will have to do a lot of running inside. Wilson does not have the jets for those outside pitch plays. Ravens LB’s are too good.

And if the farce that is the NFL gets the call today, the same one they got last night in big D, we really have zero chance today

Brad Allen is also the ref that didn’t call a single penalty on the Eagles against us.

  74. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Pretty screwed missing two of our 4 best weapons in Waddle and Mostert against the #1 defense in the league.

  75. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Anyone see a list of the total inactive for the game?

Holland is not listed as inactive
    🤷‍♂️

In this new Fangio defense, it’s crazy how many sacks Wilkins and Seiler have this season. Nice!

  78. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Thanks Son! Guess we will see more of RB’s Wilson and Brooks.

  80. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We will have to win the turnover battle to have a chance in this game, I think.
