2023 Season – Game 17 – Bills @ Dolphins

This is it! TIME TO SHINE!!!

It’s not going to be easy, we all understand that, but the Miami Dolphins simply have to find a way to win this game at home, in the friendly confines of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Sure, there will be a lot of important Miami Dolphins players that will miss this game, most recently, OLB Bradley Chubb, CB Xavien Howard and WR Jaylen Waddle, who join OLB Jaelan Phillips, OC Connor Williams, OG Isaiah Wynn and potentially, ILB Jerome Baker who may make his way back this Sunday night. There is also a chance Jaylen Waddle plays, but those high ankle sprains are so difficult to play with, and even if WR Tyreek Hill plays, he’s not playing nearly at 100% with a sore ankle of his own.

I can’t express how important this game is. The Dolphins team psyche is fragile at best after getting demolished and embarrassed last Sunday in a 56-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Yes Dolphins fans, yet another beatdown at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens. It was a demoralizing loss, in what was a fight for the #1 seed in the AFC. After the 1st quarter, it wasn’t much of a fight, even though we got the first punch in. Of course, to pour salt in already open wounds, we lost OLB Bradley Chubb to an ACL tear (non-contact) very late in the game, where he should have been on the bench. Young coach mistake there, and one that could have ramifications for not only this season, but next as well.

I believe it will be ROLB Melvin Ingram who will start opposite LOLB Andrew Van Ginkel. DE/OLB Emmanuel Ogbah will be in the rotation as well as 2nd year OLB Cameron Goode. On the O-line, it’s looking like RG Robert Hunt will be playing, but how long, is anyone’s guess. OC Liam Eichenberg is hurting with a calf injury but he’s been a gamer and has fought through it. RB Raheem Mostert will almost surely play, it was a surprise he missed the Ravens game. Both ILB’s David Long Jr. and Duke Riley are hurting, so if Jerome Baker is healthy enough to go, he may be needed. Listen, none of this ideal, we all understand the NFL is a game of attrition, and the Dolphins have been hit hard by injuries, but this game is just extremely important. The difference between losing two games in a row at the end of the season and ending up the #6 seed and a Wild Card, and beating the Bills and potentially removing them from the playoff picture entirely is just tremendous. Being the AFC East Champs and securing a Home Playoff game or traveling to KC as a downtrodden Wild Card team is a chasm nearly equal to the Grand Canyon.

The Buffalo Bills handled us quite easily in our first matchup earlier in the season, it wasn’t even close, as they cruised to a 48-20 victory in Buffalo. We will not have the heat advantage as it’s January, and the high temperature for Sunday is expected to be 73 degrees, and about 63 at game time. I would also expect a strong showing of Buffalo Bills fans at Hard Rock, which further lessens our home team advantage. Despite those shortcomings, Head Coach Mike McDaniel has to have his team confident, and ready to compete for the AFC title. This is no small feat, but it’s also essential if this team is going anywhere and contend for a Super Bowl berth.

Two games can really impact our game. First off, the Steelers vs Ravens game.  If the Steelers can knock off the Ravens, who will be resting most of their starters, including QB Lamar Jackson, then that would be the first domino to fall. Then on Sunday, if the Jacksonville Jaguars defeat the Tennessee Titans, this would force the Bills into a must win situation in order to make the playoffs. I’m not sure the Bills need any extra incentive to want to beat us, but that scenario just might make them a little extra desperate. My feeling is we should be just as desperate. We need to have a positive ending to the season, and another loss might just break this team. Not that the Kansas City Chiefs are unbeatable, far from it, but a playoff game in January in Kansas City will more than likely be in frigid temps, and I can’t see us having any confidence after surrendering the division crown to the Bills while having a two game lead with 2 games to go. It’s just a horrible situation, and I know our team has been tight, meaning feeling a good camaraderie, but those 2 losses to end the season to fall to Wild Card status could be too much to overcome.

The Bills are the hot team, winning 4 in a row, we’re floundering now after not only losing the game but leaving one of our best defensive players behind as well. RB James Cook has been huge weapon for the Bills during this 4 game tear. He has 355 yards rushing with 1 rushing TD and 8 receptions for 121 yards and 1 receiving TD. Josh Allen has been running the ball more often as well, imposing his will on the defense. Allen has 115 yards rushing in the last 4 and a whopping 6 rushing TD’s. Allen has always been dangerous when facing us, and in addition to James Cook, Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, we will have our hands full. Allen, along with James Cook might just run all day against our defense, especially with all 3 ILB’s hobbled (Long, Riley and Baker). With Xavien Howard OUT, CB Eli Apple will get the starting nod at LCB opposite Jalen Ramsey. CB Kader Kohou will be in the slot. I’m not sure how Vic Fangio is going to play this defense. Do we have one of our OLB’s spy Josh Allen, either Andrew Van Ginkel or Melvin Ingram? My preference would not be that, I’d rather have them rushing the passer, but if Josh Allen is running amuck, that might have to change.

Another key factor will be our offense. We must be running hot, we have to run the ball with both Mostert and Achane, and we must score TD’s, not rely on FG’s. The Bills offense has not been a high powered offense, and we’ll be much better suited to defend them if they’re playing from behind. It’s imperative for our run game to be working and someone besides Tyreek Hill needs to threaten the defense. I’m fine with the Tyreek show if he’s killing it, but I’d much rather see more balance in our attack. McDermott has been successful defending us, so Mike McDaniel has his work cut out. My hope is that he has the right gameplan on Sunday night to finally grasp the AFC East crown. It’s been 15 years since we’ve done that, 2008. It’s TIME TO SHINE!!!

Plenty of news outlets covered it. Do a google search and you’ll see numerous news outlets covered it. It was a fight between 2 groups of teenagers. 4 were arrested. There was such a large response because the teenagers were throwing fireworks at one another so it was reported as gunshots so there was (a presumed) terrorist attack in progress on New Year’s Day…
    ————–
    Hulkster,

If this is the official story (checks out as far as accuracy, as far as I can tell being officially ‘reported’), the response to said terrorist attack would have been far, far too late… a total failure.

What’s more, after determining that this was not — in fact — a terrorist attack early enough on, why weren’t LEOs called off? This could have been a false flag to bring police to the wrong side of the city… AWAY from a potential real event.

Why was the power cut off to the city, why was the airport shut down, why were police monitors silenced (huh? They NEED that for communication!), why was it allegedly reported as a potential riot, and lastly… WHY IS THERE NO VIDEO EVIDENCE of these several 14 to 16-year-old kids armed with “sticks & fireworks” available to certify as proof of a potential riot to warrant such an overwhelming response?

I mean, we didn’t see this kind of police response when BLM and Antifa were actively filmed burning down cities, police precincts, and killing people in the summer of ’20, for crying out loud! Remember those “mostly peaceful protesters”? LOL

Hulkster, I’m not arguing with you, not in the least, my guy. I’m just saying that the narrative isn’t lining up with what occurred. At the very least, it was an abject failure in the scope and timing of the response. I’m with BB Mike on this.

I clearly haven’t the answers, nor am I suggesting aliens/UFOs/zombies/werewolves/vampires (LOL)… but the official record can’t even pass the sniff test here. I’d just love to know what really happened… so would MANY!

  11. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I would say I’m hopeful, but not confident.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Will you be shocked if we play well and beat them? I won’t be. The thing that scares me the most is if we look flat and go down. If that happens, I think we’re in big trouble. I think it’s really important we get ahead and stay ahead

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Pigster has set the tone for me already tonight… ALIENS!

  13. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think we are going to win

Josh Allen has 37 completions in his last 3 games
    37 – that’s less than 13 a game

Since firing their OC, the Bills have been focusing on running the ball to generate offense
We are good at stopping the run

Even last week trailing by a lot, the ravens, who are the best running team in the nfl, didn’t run really well (160 total yards)

So I think that’s one matchup that favors us.

I also think Ogbah and Van Ginkle, while not being Phillips and Chubb can generate pressure

My big concern is whether baker is healthy or not. Duke Riley is fast but he is often well out of position and has trouble covering the RB

so we can use bakers discipline style of play and his coverage ability

If we can do that than maybe we use Ramsey to shut down diggs

At the end of the day I think turnovers will determine this game
And the bills, u like the ravens, turn the ball over quite a bit

We just have to play smart football.

That interception last week in the final mins of the half is when I felt like we were cooked

Tua didn’t throw an int for 5 games before that
We need that Tua again for this game

I don’t expect the same kind of defensive performance we had against the bills in sept – I just think we are better than that

  14. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Now do I think we CAN win this game on Sunday? Absolutely. It will take a tremendous effort from all 3 phases, but YES WE CAN!

However, my level of confidence just isn’t there for this one… too many injuries to feel hella CONFIDENT.

  16. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

More than anything, I just want to see us play a good, competitive game. If we go back and forth with the Bills and they win a tight, hard fought game, I can live with that. I just don’t want to see us get blown out again in a big game against a tough opponent.

I’m really hoping Waddle and Mostert play. I want to see Tua have a good game and put up big numbers in an important moment- he needs his weapons to help make that happen.

  17. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Mike E,

Would I be shocked if we won the game? No. But I’d be pretty surprised. Josh Allen has pretty much owned us since he got into the league. We were a fluke Allen pass away from getting swept in three games last year. The Bills have our number. I really hope we can change that tomorrow night.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I won’t be surprised. If we beat them handily, that would surprise me, but I don’t think we’re getting blown out in this one. This one should be a tight game, not more than a TD difference.

  18. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Supposedly if Dolphins season ticket holders are selling them to Bills fans, their tickets are not being renewed. Apparently it’s in the terms and conditions .

I’m getting tired of everybody kissing Buffalo’s asses. We get those white bellied Northerners in the sun…start running them up and down the field and put them away in the fourth when they’re sucking air. We can absolutely beat these losers. Never go with the common thought on big divisional games. They’re just different and anything can happen. Forget all the reasons you shouldn’t win this game. I don’t want to hear the BS. It’s the fucking jills….what more motivation do you need to kick some ass?
    ***
See how I tried not to sound like a stupid out of towner there? Being a northerner myself. 😉

  22. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I know there is a lot of anxiety about the game tomorrow

    But I’m really excited

We put ourselves in position to win the AFC East, get – home playoff game (hopefully more than 1) and even knock out division rival put of the playoffs

Tua will start his 17th game of the year tomorrow

We have been the best offense in the league all season

We have a great running game and a great passing game

And our defense has improved all season long

This season has been our best season in decades

And our team has worked hard to put the team in position to win the AFC East

It’s been a good oinking year

Don’t let your anxiety get the best of you – we are enjoying something we haven’t been able to enjoy for 20 years

The Dolphins have worked hard to put themselves in position to win the afc east. The blowhard la will never understand that.

Enjoy it Oinkeroos – the team hasn’t delivered a product like this since we’ve been blogging together

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – mostly true, with the exception if we lose and go in as a WC it won’t really be all that different from last year. The W is so much more important, it definitely legitimizes the team. It’s 2 completely different outlooks. Win and we seem like we belong. Lose and we’re still the Dolphins who didn’t belong there in the first place.

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Piggy,
All I’ve been thinking about all week is Brian Cox flipping off the Buffalo fans. This team could use a little bit of that attitude tomorrow night. Division title….playoff seeding. Who cares? It’s the jills in a prime time game at home to end the season. I’d better see nothing less than a team who competes their asses off. If a game like this doesn’t motivate you, what will?

  25. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Ticket prices have jumped to about $350 for the cheapest seat in the upper level at Hard Rock Stadium.” — we got the game of the week for sure.

  26. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

According to Mando, this is what the Phins do as far as re-sells.

“The Dolphins, unlike many other teams, don’t sell tickets to brokers. The team also tracks how many tickets their season ticket members resell. If the number of resales passes a certain threshold, the club will not renew the season ticket subscription the following season. That policy has been in place for years.”

Steelers won. So if Jax wins tomorrow, when we beat Buffalo they will miss the playoffs.

    We got this!

  30. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Win tomorrow and we’re still the #2 seed with a home game against either the Steelers or Texans (I think).

We would have a damn good chance of advancing, and we’d get another home game for a chance to move onto the AFC championship.

    Must…beat…the…Bills.

  31. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

I’m feeling really good about tomorrow. We’re gonna win 🙂

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I have no confidence we’ll beat the Bills, too many injuries and they’re healthy, seems to be the case every time we’re playoff bound, just can’t catch a break

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Why is it ok for a DB to hold down a receiver from jumping to his highest point?

Just happened to Texans Schultz, have seen it several times, but never called

  34. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Well, Steelers won.

With the Steelers win, the Colts or Texans will be eliminated tonight.

So, the Jags are now in an identical situation as the Bills. The Jags are in a must win situation. With a win, they win their division. They lose and end up 9-8, they are out of the playoffs and the Bills secure a WC spot.

Then, if the Jags win on the road at the Titans (Looks like Tannehill is starting) the Bills will be in a must win situation. With a win, they win the AFCE. They lose (again, after a Jags win), they are out of the playoffs.

Does this give them extra motivation against the Dolphins or does it put too much pressure on Allen that he fucks up?

  35. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We control our own destiny for the #2 seed and hosting a home playoff game. We can limp in as the #6 seed. I’m excited for a big game.🙂

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Crazy how the results of our game will impact several teams right in the end.

Almost like the NFL pre-planned (rigged) it and moved our game to prime time because it will be affecting so many fans. It will probably be one of the most viewed Sunday night games all season.

  37. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wow it seems like T.J. Watt suffered at least this season ending injury. It never ends. We don’t want to see anyone get injured but key players changes everything.

  38. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Colts have 204 yards rushing so far. Taylor has 165 of it.

  39. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Assuming we win, then…

if Jax wins, we play the Steelers…
and if Jax loses, we’ll play the Bills again.

    Is that right?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And if we lose, we play the Chiefs.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yes, from the looks of it.

Jags win and we win then we play the Steelers.

Jags lose but we win, Bills fall to 7th seed and play us again in Miami.

We lose, regardless of what Jags do, we fall to 6th seed and go on the road to play the Chiefs. Bills have the head to head over the Chiefs.

  40. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jags win and we win it will be:

    Steelers at Dolphins
    Texans at Chiefs
    Browns at Jaguars

Jags lose and we win it will be:

    Bills at Dolphins
    Steelers at Chiefs
    Browns at Texans

Jags win and we lose it will be:

    Texans at Bills
    Dolphins at Chiefs
    Browns at Jaguars

Jags lose and we lose it will be:

    Steelers at Bills
    Dolphins at Chiefs
    Browns at Texans

  41. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Interesting – 2 of the 4 losses the Ravens have were against the Steelers. Steelers won both of those games with identical scores of 17-10. Those 2 games were the most points (7) the Ravens have lost by. The other 2 Ravens losses were by 3 points to the Colts, 22-19 and by 2 points to the Browns, 33-31. Also, 3 of the 4 Ravens losses were at home.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well if you think about it from his perspective

      These guys have to execute
They are actually playing the game

They don’t need to build up the game to be any different than just doing their job and doing their job well

They have to treat it like a professional instead of being emotional about it

I think it’s consistent with some of thinks Bill Belichick used to say and the sort of stuff the patriots were praised for. The team is just handling business.

Mike McDaniel has this stigma of being a corky character

But I look at some of the mentality he instills on his player and he’s very professional. I think it’s a reflection of the coach to approach the game this way

We have to see how it pans outs
But I think treating it like any game is McDaniel’s calming presence
He also preaches stiff like bouncing back from adversity

That’s going to be tested today

Meanwhile the other coach fired his OC a few months ago after a special teams gaff and fired the DC last offseason. He also had to apologize for missing a 9/11 terrorist metaphor

I think McDaniels calming presence as opposed to McDermott’s basket case in action persona might be exactly what we need

So if the Titans win, does Buffalo play as hard tonight?

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Jags lose, we beat the Bills back to back and give them a big Fuck you

  66. Randy's avatar Randy says:

This is not just another game. This team put themselves in this position where this game DOES matter more than others because it’s the last one. If you didn’t want to be here….beat TN. Play smart but play with emotion. You can do both. Emotion can actually help you execute at a higher level too. I’ll be seriously pissed if they come out for this game and don’t play with emotion and an edge.

Tannehill still fucking us after all these years

    Fucking Titans

    ——————–
I think, it will give the Bills an emotional high going into the game with us. Unfortunately.

  72. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    I really hate the Titans

  73. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Vrabel is a good coach. I thought he would have his team hyped to play spoiler.

  74. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Jacksonville with chance to WIN DIVISION looking like they definitely don’t deserve it.

  75. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Still want Jags to come back and win. It would be sweet to clinch division AND knock a rival out of the playoffs.

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A lot of people picked the Titans today.

  77. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    🤬😡🤢

  78. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Not looking good for Jax right now

  79. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

man, Jags had an opportunity with plenty of clock time, now they need a stop, a td, AND 2 pt conversion. smh

  80. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Wow Calvin Ridley

  81. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Overthrown

  82. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Fuck you, Titans.

I can’t believe our best case scenario is to play the Bills twice in a row.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

      But really Kong, can’t you?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess I should be used to this.

IDK, maybe it won’t be so bad to lose tonight. KC seems to be a weaker team than the Bills. But the truth is, we would likely see the Bills in the next round anyway seeing as they would be the #2 seed, and it would be in Buffalo.

        Fucking Jags

  83. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Ouch. Buffalo and Pitt are now in the playoffs.

  84. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I really don’t want to play Buffalo two weeks in a row

  85. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

That Titans loss killed us. Everything has gone wrong since then . I actually kind of don’t want to win tonight (don’t think we will anyway) because we won’t beat the Bills in back to back weeks.

  86. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  87. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would rather play Buffalo twice at home than KC on the road

  88. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

instead of cheering for a tie, I’ll cheer for a win and a Josh Allen in Boot scenario when game is done. lol

  89. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Nothing is ever easy…

  90. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Chiefs are not the same team they’ve been in recent years but it’s tough to win in KC.

  91. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I like our chances in KC vs. beating the Bills twice in a row

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Both games will be in Miami though.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You’re not alone in that train of thought, but I feel like you get demoralized by the Ravens 56-19, lose to the Bills in your house and let them steal the AFC East crown, and then all of a sudden you’re going to travel to KC and beat them in frigid weather in their house, which is a very loud stadium? I don’t see that happening. Beat the Bills, the team will be confident, and then we’ll take them on with Waddle and Mostert at home after we already proved we can beat them.
