Dolphins once again don’t show up in big game

I’m not going to use one game stat to make any points in this article. I feel stats are utterly unnecessary, we all watched and saw how our team just looked like it didn’t belong on the same field as the Kansas City Chiefs. The fact is, this team did belong, they just don’t know how to perform like they do. I can’t lie to you, it absolutely killed me to watch QB C.J. Stroud play a whale of a game against the #1 defense in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns. Of course it matters that Stroud did this at home, and we’re also well aware that our own Miami Dolphins should have been playing at home. This team showed no urgency, no alarm, no significant worry about not maintaining the home field advantage, so much so in fact, I was kind of lulled into thinking they had some crazy game plan prepared to take down the Chiefs. No, that clearly wasn’t the case as we witnessed our offense look more like the NFL’s worst offense the Carolina Panthers instead the #1 offense, The Miami Dolphins, with 401 yards per game and 61 total TD’s, both tops in the NFL.

So who gets the blame here? I think it’s clear that mastermind Mike McDaniel has a whole lot of work to do. The best coaches adjust on the fly, if the gameplan isn’t working, they make incremental changes and figure out a way to exploit what the defense is doing. We saw nothing. I know the Chiefs have a good defense, but they’re not that good. If I didn’t see Chiefs WR Rashee Rice running wild last night, Isiah Pacheco running over, around and through our defenders, I’d think maybe it was just really poor footing, but I’m pretty sure the Chiefs were playing on the same field we were, and they had no issue. Our Head Coach, offensive genius just didn’t look so smart against any of the better NFL teams. This is a huge concern, because I think the problem is twofold. Usually, an offense is going to go as far as your QB, and while QB Tua Tagovailoa had some brilliant games this season, not one of them were against winning teams. As much confidence as HC Mike McDaniel has in Tua, he has not rewarded his coach once by really stepping up in a big game.

As I was attempting to sleep last night, all these thoughts flooded my frustrated and tortured mind. What can we do to make this offense work against better teams? What could we get in the offseason that can improve this offense? Some obvious ones are finding a LT that can stay on the field the whole season. We’re going to need an OC as well. While Liam Eichenberg filled in admirably showing tons of guts playing through his calf injury, he’s not the guy going forward. RG Robert Hunt is a Free Agent, as is OC Connor Williams. LT Terron Armstead has a $24M dead cap hit, so we’re likely going to have to live with him missing loads of playing time. Oh, did I mention we’re $42M OVER THE CAP right now? DID I mention we have a 1st RD pick and 2nd RD pick and then don’t choose again until RD 5?

Hey, by the way, did I mention that on defense, CB Xavien Howard who should be toast next season has a $27M dead cap hit? Oh, and did I mention that neither OLB Jaelan Phillips or OLB Bradley Chubb will likely be ready to play at the start of the season, and Andrew Van Ginkel is a Free Agent? DE/OLB Emmanuel Ogbah has a $17M cap hit, but only a $4M dead cap hit. Seems like an easy decision to let him go except for the fact that we have no OLB’s. Oh, hey, did I tell you that DE Christian Wilkins is a Free Agent? I know we’re going to find a way to sign him, and it’s possible we can somehow re-sign Andrew Van Ginkel as well, but the cap is going to kill us next season, so we’re going to have to be very creative finding ways to help this team

This team desperately needs a well rounded TE. We need a TE that can block, catch the ball, and have the athleticism to provide run after the catch ability. No offense to Durham Smythe, but he’s a #2 TE, he’s not that guy. You look at our receivers, WR’s and TE’s as a group, and we’re small, we’re not physical, and that needs to change. Tyreek Hill is phenomenal, Jaylen Waddle has showed he can do damage when Hill is out, but our Tyreek Centric Offense relies waaaay too much on #10. Our entire RB room is returning next season, I think we’re fine there. I’d love to see them work Chris Brooks into the offense more, but Mostert, Achane, Wilson and Brooks will all be under contract next season. Wr is a different story. We have Hill, Waddle and Wilson, after that, we’re in trouble. Only WR Erik Ezukanma returns and he has been quite a disappointment.

Back to the defense for a moment. LB Jerome Baker is still under contract, a bit of a heavy $14.87M, but our defense was better with him, and I think he’s one of the most underrated and under appreciated players on our defense. David Long was excellent, better than advertised. Duke Riley played so well when he first replaced Baker, but then teams exploited him, and he’s a 2nd string and ST’s guy, so we do need ILB help and of course, help at OLB with our injury situation. We simply cannot rely on CB Xavien Howard. I think Howard has been on the decline physically for a while now, and to add to our misfortune, our 2nd RD pick CB Cam Smith has given us no indication that he could ever be starting player. That’s a HUGE miss right there! In addition, one of my favorite guys, CB Nik Needham is not the same since his injury, and to add salt into the wound, Kader Kohou who showed so much promise last season was not up to the task this season and was exposed and picked on so often this season with great success.

I’m sure Tyreek will cooperate and restructure and get paid up front with signing bonuses to give us some cap relief, and if we do sign Tua, we can structure his 2024 salary friendly to the cap. Then there’s Ogbah and Baker, and we might have to do something for the cap with those guys, either release, or restructure. Regardless of all the cap machinations, we’re not going to be flush with money, and we have a lot of holes to fill, and some huge players that need to be re-signed, none bigger than #94 Christian Wilkins. You can’t let him go, he’s a Dolphins lifer! We drafted him in RD 1 and has been the best 1st RD pick in a long time! He’s been better every single year, and has been All Pro worthy last season and this season.

Back to Tua. It’s crazy to me that the normal thing to do here is to reward him with a $50M per year contract. There are so many signs that tell you not to. He just can’t play up to the level of the competition he faces. It’s not just occasionally, it’s EVERY-SINGLE-GAME! Please don’t throw out the 3rd game of the season in ’22 where we beat the Ravens 42-38. The Ravens had numerous injuries in the secondary and they just couldn’t match up. No, the Ravens just a few short weeks ago showed us the real Ravens defense, and Tua couldn’t compete. We have never seen a big game from him against a good team when we desperately needed one. He just can’t carry the team, and even worse, he can’t even keep us in a game we could win. He lead the NFL in passing, feasting, really feasting on an awful Broncos team early in the season. I’d bet if we played them Week 15, the game would be entirely different. They were a mess, and he had season’s worth of offense in that game.

There are just too many instances of both our QB, and our Head Coach not being able to match up against better teams. Some feel it will happen eventually. Me, I think I consider myself a pretty realistic person. I think some guys are just built to be winners. Probably not his fault, but I think Tua has been conditioned now to make sure to live another day. I think Josh Allen would lose a limb to win. I think Joe Burrow is the same. I think the guy who so many compare to Tua as a better player, (Justin Herbert), is also NOT a winner. He may have the arm of Elway, but he doesn’t have the heart of Elway. Again, I don’t want to blame Tua for not leaving it all on the field, I think his coaches have made him this way, to preserve his health and availability, but that’s also not going to win you a lot of games either. 4th and 1 and you’re scrambling and you can dive head first for the marker and take a hit or slide a yard short, Tua is sliding my friends. Even in a playoff game.

In summation here, it’s not a bright outlook. Instead of this team growing and improving, it’s not unrealistic to see us take a step back. We don’t have enough picks, and I don’t even have confidence we hit on the ones we have, because lately, we’ve been downright awful. In 2023, we hit big on RB De’Von Achane, our 2nd of only 4 picks in this draft. The others, 2nd RD pick Cam Smith seems like a miss, and then 6th RD pick WR Elijah Higgins is gone but 7th RD pick OT Ryan Hayes is on our practice squad. In 2022, once again with only 4 picks, none of them have showed starting potential. LB Channing Tindall is a ST’s guy who has played 99% of his snaps on ST’s. That’s a 3rd RD pick! 4th RD WR Erik Ezukanma who I previously brought up has shown zero. Two 7th RD picks LB Cameron Goode who is injured and has been mostly a ST’s guy as well as QB Skylar Thompson, who has been relegated to 3rd string QB. Once again, we go in to the 2024 Draft with 6 picks, but besides our 1st and 2nd RD picks (RD 1 #23), (RD2 #56), we have to wait 100 more picks, all the way to RD 5 #156 for our next pick. Then it’s #185 in RD 6 and again at #201 in RD 6. Our last pick is #240 in RD 7. Very little draft capital thanks to trades and our fucking team owner Stephen Ross who tampered with both Sean Payton and Tom Brady so we lost our 2023 1st RD pick and our 3rd RD pick in the 2024 Draft. Grier has his work cut out for him, as does Head Coach Mike McDaniel to find a way to have this offense humming, even when we play a good team.

The good news is, it’s the first time we made the playoffs in consecutive years for decades

The drought people talk about includes all the years we missed the playoffs

If we keeping making the postseason, we will win in the postseason

  2. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t want to get too pulled into the discussion or start one

But the discussion about QB is different than years past when we talked about Tannehill of (gulp) Henne.

What’s looking at us straight in the face now is a very expensive extension. Signing Tua this off-season is basically committing to him through about 2029-2030

What am I missing? Why do yiu guys keep saying we need a pass rusher
    OL I get
    But pass rusher?

If we resign Van Ginkle than we have a solid top 3. I don’t know what the recovery time is for Chubb or Phillips but they should be ready pretty early next season, right?

I have been saying the same thing. Peyton struggled in playoffs early in his career. Ditto Ely. Steve Young couldn’t beat Dallas until he did. Elway went 0-3 in SBs until the last 2 years of his career.

Regression in 24-25 season. Bet on it!

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just to prove that winning (post season games) means a lot, you have the Eagles who supposedly are considering parting ways with Nick Siriani, who in 3 seasons has 34-17 record. Dallas also considering parting ways with Mike McCarthy who has had 3 straight 12-5 seasons.

To put what I’m saying in perspective, Siriani actually got the Eagles to the Superbowl, and then this year, his team was 10-1 and then had a late season collapse. We couldn’t beat winning teams when we were playing good and then we also had a late season collapse. Should Tua be held to the same standard these coaches are? Probably not, but it’s not as crazy as some of you make it. Putting up great stats and then losing to be better competition shouldn’t hold much water. In college football, it’s not just wins and stats, it’s who you beat.

Once again, I give no extension until the completion of next season. See if he can make strides, beat good teams, be competitive against good teams. There’s zero risk on our part, if he succeeds he will get paid close to what he was going to get paid w/o proving he could beat good teams. If he gets hurt or doesn’t play well again, why would you expect this to change?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

But Piggy, how do you separate Tua’s “Last chance” performance from a regressing roster? Do you draft a replacement this year in case you finally come to the realization that Tua is limited? or do you languish is purgatory a few more years after not extending him?

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – Does it matter? If Tua does the same thing he did this year, play extraordinarily well against bad teams and not show up against good teams, is that really what you want to go forward for the next 6-8 years? I know I don’t!

  14. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Rock,

We won’t be able to keep everyone, but they Will manipulate the cap to get lost back. Some of that may entail signing Tua to a long term deal, re working Tyreek’s contract, Chubb’s etc. from a pure business standpoint we have to tag Wilkins if we can’t work out a deal. You can’t let him walk for nothing.

  15. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Phel, Howard has a 25M salary and a 27 dead cap hit. There is NO savings for Howard available. If we make is post June 1st we still have 16 m in dead cap.

Ogbah has a 4M dead cap hit if we release him this season.

Armstead has a 20m salary and a 24m cap hit.

I see there is still discussion about the “narrative” in various quarters among the fan base. I hate that word in this context. It’s a fact, and people who refuse to accept it as fact re-christen it as a narrative in a transparently embarrassing attempt to imply it is no longer a fact when it’s seen through the prism of their bias and refusal to accept reality. Wrong.

  19. Randy's avatar Randy says:

There were an awful lot of people on here saying we were a SB contender and we should go all-in on winning a championship. Very few here felt that was insane. I’m not sure how Grier can be ripped or questioned for doing exactly what many said they would do too.
    ***
I’m not a huge fan of Grier, but I’d say he’s made some nice player choices and some not so good ones. Frankly, he appears to be like 90% of GMs in the NFL. They all pretty much behave the same ways.
    ***
I keep Wilkins if possible, but he talks too much for me. I think he could be even better if he focused more and talked less. That said, he’s a good player. I also keep Hunt. I’ve been saying since he was drafted; he’s got all pro potential. He didn’t look so good when he just came back, but the guy can be a monster. He’s one of those guys who raises the toughness level of the whole OL. Williams is less talented than Hunt, but Center could be considered a more valuable position. If I had to choose, I’d keep Hunt, no question. AVG? Meh. Do what you like.

  20. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Oh I forgot Howard. We should’ve gotten rid of him last year. The problem is we don’t have much depth at CB. That’s a position that’s high on my draft card.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Haven’t dove into CB much yet but this seems to be a decent draft for CB also. DeJean has seemed to move up most draft boards to possibly top 3 and out of our range at #21. Never know though.

Found myself happy for Baker Mayfield last night. I knew it had been a few but didn’t realize he has gone through 8 HC’s (including interim) in his 7 seasons. He was throwing some darts last night. He has the quickest release in the NFL right now, IMO.

  23. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

what really pisses me off is not only we lost but I had to get a peacock subscription for one month.

  24. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

I think Tua is a smaller part of the problem when we play better teams. tbh I personally think its more of a coaching issue. MM is not making good in game adjustments and many times I feel like we’re being out coached in those games.

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,
I like DeJean. He’s also a return guy. I’m wondering if he’ll be a corner or safety in the NFL. He played some safety early on in his career. I’m sure they’ll push him as a corner, but I could see him being very much like Harrison Smith with the Vikes. He’s not a big hitter, but he has good effort. Smart kid. Coached very well at Iowa. I’ll be interested to see where he’s drafted.

  26. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

do you guys think the team regressed from last year? we won 2 more games in the regular season this year but I thought we played better in the playoffs last year in buffalo with a back up QB than we did this year in KC with Tua.

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we weren’t so banged up down the stretch I think we’d still be playing. 🙂

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tough call, but if our defense wasn’t so depleted, the score would have been closer and given us more opportunities for another big play.

Defense played hard but was limited by what they had on the field.

MM had no answer for what KC was doing on D and the game got away.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Rock,
I don’t think anybody is a fool for their opinion of a football team. Fans can believe whatever they like. That’s part of the fun of following a team. I just can’t rip Grier for something lots of fans seemed to support. I can’t view a team as a SB contender when they haven’t even won a playoff game in decades. I believe teams who win SBs are forged over a few years through their playoff/big game experience. Having a good roster isn’t enough. Just my view. I may be a fool for thinking that way! 😜

  30. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Ya know what helps you block people? Call run plays! This was a close game for most of the time. There’s just no excuse for not running more. Our OL didn’t do any worse than our skill players against KC. I feel they played better, actually. This blaming the OL constantly becomes a straw man. It’s easy for fans because it’s really not criticizing a single player…it’s criticizing a group. Our OL held up pretty damn well this season for everything that went on. Weren’t they part of the oh so impressive 11 wins too?!?! Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I do think we need to become a more physical team moving forward. Speed is great but need some more power too. The division we play in and what it takes to get to the next level requires more physical play from what I’m seeing. Our tacking is still suspect. Most of the teams that won this weekend played really physical and the tackling was exceptional.

I concur, man. Tua isn’t free of any blame, nor is anybody else on the team (from the players up to management). I’m just baffled that so many (not just here) want to point fingers solely at Tua.

Tua isn’t THE problem… it’s multi-faceted. Had Mike White been our starter this past season, we’d be around 5-12 and picking within the top-5 of the Draft, IMO.

  37. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I do think we need to become a more physical team moving forward. Speed is great but need some more power too.
    ———
Tim, we could have both with WR Xavier Legette. I posted him before not long ago. He’s 6’3, 227 pounds and projected to run a 4.30 and possibly a sub 4.3. His fastest on field speed this year was 22.3 MPH. That’s faster than anyone recorded in the NFL this year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Impressive prospect but I mean throughout the team. A more physical mindset and play. We need more players that fit that criteria. But yes you can get that at WR too.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Reminiscent of Louisville’s DeVante Parker (that’s a compliment)… only faster, stronger, and willing to fight through tackles.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Notice that I did not say former Miami Dolphin DeVante Parker. DVP was such an excellent prospect out of Louisville… it just never panned out for him and his propensity to get injured.

        I LIKE X LEGETTE!

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – My answer to your question is I would let Tua play on his 5th year contract. We’ll have our answer one way or the other and then at that point, we’ll know whether we want to pay him $50M per for 5-8 years, or whether we need to draft a QB and start all over at the QB position

  39. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve gotta say this… between BB Mike and Dbolt, they have me wanting to draft a WR early every year! BB Mike and Dbolt have exceptionally keen eyes on the WR position and they rarely get it wrong.

I tip my hat to both of you… my ‘WR gurus’! 🙂

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

      Thanks, I try. lol

This is a real good crop of WR’s this year for the first 2 rounds.

I keep mocking to us WR/RB Ainias Smith from Texas A&M. I like that kid. He’s a low 4.4 guy at 5’10, 200 and would bring something extra out of the slot. Should be there in the 5th or top of 6th.

      Ainias Smith Scouting Report
      – A coach’s dream (does ALL the dirty work)
      – Willing run blocker against LARGE humans
      – Experience at both WR and RB
      – Very willing pass protector
      – Shifty route runner
      – Special teams upside as a returner
      – Teams top target in 2020 and 2021 at WR

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So what your saying is we’re going to sign Tua to a 5-8 YR $40-50M per year contract, but this upcoming season we’re going to pay him like $10M?

  41. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    BB Mike and Dbolt,

In NO way am I insinuating that your draft knowledge/intuition/work is limited strictly to the WR position. I think y’all already know that, right?!! Frankly, I’m just amazed at how well you two consistently get it right at WR, year in and year out. 😀

I agree with all except the CB’s. Almost, all the draft boards have both McKinstry and DeJean in the top 3 CB’s to get drafted. Some have Kool-Aid as CB1, others have Wiggins CB1.

LT/RT Suamataia could very well be there for us.

Who knows. Every year we see players slide for one reason or another.

If you’re replying to what I was saying I was talking about the KC game and a few others down the stretch when Hill was banged up and Waddle was out. We don’t have other WRs on their level and that’s understandable. We don’t have the TE to push the field either. Remember Achane and Mostert missed time and were banged up. That exposed us because we lost our bread and butter.

  50. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There are a lot of decisions to be made this offseason with cap, injuries that will likely affect the start of next season (Phillips and Chubb), FAs we likely want to bring back etc., and that all has to be dealt with before we draft. Many of those decisions will affect how we approach the draft. Sometimes picking later like 21st is a good thing because a good prospect falls to you and you don’t have to overthink it. You didn’t think he’d be available.

I’m not surprised by the rumors that Armstead might retire. His body is letting him down too often. That’s unfortunate because when he does play he makes a difference. But having him here the last two years was really good for a lot the young guys and the culture. His leadership rubbed off on players.

We’ll retool and get after it again next season. 🙂

  51. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Or, maybe, just maybe, we can fire the POS GM who has had a direct hand in 20 years of bad drafts?? Perhaps we can draft an offensive line that’s not offensive to watch play? Paying top dollar for a part time player CERTAINLY is not the answer.

  52. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tua’s ’22 season projected for 17 starts, vs Tua’s ’23 season with 17 starts…

    ’22: 4614 passing yards, 33 TDs, 10 INTs
    ’23: 4624 passing yards, 29 TDs, 14 INTs

That’s a model of consistency with passing yards if there was ever an example, but gimpy ‘Reek down the stretch and Waddle (<– for most of the season) struggled to be redzone factors.

A redzone TE would have changed the scope and balance of this Offense in '23.

And YES, I'm frustrated with those 14 INTs from Tua this past season.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Now go back to Kurt Warner’s videos I posted the other day and realize that Coach McDaniel’s route-concepts aren’t delivering for Tua… they can lead to instant disaster.

The offense needs to continue evolving. McDaniel has said as much. He specifically said TE is part of that. We’re invested in a lot of players to compete for the ultimate goal. You can’t win anything if you’re not in the tournament. Keep that rolling. 🙂

Will be interesting to see what he runs. Some sites are projecting him around a 4.8 guy which takes away any seam threat. Will also have to see what kind of short area quickness he has as that is important in MM’s scheme and why Sheehan and Kroft didn’t really fit. I like him though. Sorry… many of you are barking up the wrong tree. You don’t move on from a 25 year old QB with a .63% win rate with two years under a HC that believes in him with an offense that fits his strengths.

  76. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’ve never thought Fangio ran a difficult system. He basically likes to keep everything in front of him and converge to make plays. His rush packages never look all that complex. He really prefers not to blitz…but what coach doesn’t? One way or another….a year should be more than enough time to learn any defense. If you draft a guy, you should already know if he can learn a defense. It’s not always a bad thing to let a player sit and learn. Hard to say.
    ***
I’m kinda with MikeE. I think CB should be one of our first 2 picks if the value is there. We are weak there. I’m not saying we’re there or anything, but I think the OL is improving. A nice young OT is always on the table.
    ***
I’m telling you, Hunt is a stud. Jackson is still not where I’d like him to be based on his combination of size and athleticism, but he is finally starting to play like a man. His ceiling is higher. This is why many of us have talked about drafting an OC the past few years. He would’ve stepped in nicely right now. Eich is limited. Armstead needs to be done soon. LG…I’m not sure yet. Wynn looked good…for a second. Backups stood tall but got beat often.

    Tim,

I’d LOVE to get cute with this, but by siding WITH you…

    — Tua is the first Dolphins’ QB to lead us to back-to-back playoff appearances since Jay Fiedler: ’00 and ’01

    — Tua is the first Dolphins’ QB to be named to the Pro-Bowl since Dan Marino

    — Tua is the first Dolphins’ QB to lead the NFL in passing yardarge since Dan Marino

    — Tua has the second highest Dolphins’ passer rating in a single season (105.5 in ’22), second only to Dan Marino’s magical season of 1984 (108.9)

    — Tua (as of this past season) is now the Dolphins’ single-season record holder for completion % (69.3), passing Chad Pennington’s prior record of 68.9 in 2008

    — Tua is second to only Dan Marino (4 times) for TDs thrown in a single season for our Dolphins with 29

We had a lucky year with MR. Pennington in ’08, and the same can be said of Tannehill/Moore in ’16. Tua now has back-to-back seasons proving that he’s better than Pennington and Tannehill/Moore. What’s more, Tua is most obviously better than Jay Fiedler and the best QB we’ve had since Dan Marino.

  80. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Just a thought…lol

The best teams limited our offense because of several factors. Let’s just say it wasn’t dominant as the best teams contained it.

I really don’t think the OL is fixed at all given I believe play design/strategy reflects many weaknesses in it. We can’t convert 3rd or 4th short (we always go wide…wtf?) and rely heavily on quick strike, player-centric, RAC that’s beaten with a strong/sound defense. Tua is trained and good at quick strike, but unable to go 2nd, 3rd read because there’s never been time to do that. So, he needs to work/study that this offseason.

These are major issues, imo, and are rooted in our OL weaknesses. We need talentt and depth here.

      That’s midgame adjustment…lol

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think I concur with this, bud! Now that’s not to say Tua is blameless, either. That’s ALSO not to say that Coach McDaniel is blameless, either. However, I agree that it begins up front and Coach has Tua firing so early to mask the deficiencies of our O-Line… that’s what Belicheat* did with Brady late in his career, behind a deficient O-Line.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Lol…we need more talent on OL.

Our D was decimated by injuries and still held their own with no help from O or STs, imo, in last 3 games.

  81. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

I truly enjoy your thoughts and posts, Bro. Your 9:19 PM post above is something I largely agree with… especially regarding the need to re-sign Robert Hunt.

In terms of DBs, I think Fangio’s Defense takes some time to get used to. Lots of handoffs regarding assignments in zone-coverage with many possibilities. If all aren’t on the same page or if communication is broken, well… we’ve seen what can happen.

Year 2 (2024) is going to be a much better one regarding our Defense, IMO.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think I have faith in Cam Smith in year 2… but I’m not Vic Fangio, either. Yes, the possibility does exist that if Fangio doesn’t trust Smith, that we may select a CB with either our 1st or 2nd round picks.

Mike E, hope this addresses your concerns as you stated above.

  82. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Kohou either severely regressed this season , or he severely regressed in Fangio’s system.

  83. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Something to keep in mind regarding Vic Fangio: he’s not one of the best in the biz by accident. No, he does NOT run a vanilla Defense, that’s for certain. Not sure why some think his Defense is pretty simplistic.

Yes, year 1 of his Defensive install was probably vanilla compared to year 2, 3, or 4… ya get the idea… that’s just how it works.

In 2024 (year 2 of Fangio’s install), we’re going to be active instead of being reactionary. Players will be playing faster, more instinctively, and without as much hesitation in comparison to year 1 of Fangio’s install.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We need our edge guys back and some new players that fit what Fangio runs.

I really like Jerome Baker as a sideline to sideline LB, but that is what he is. Not a stout ILB. He’s a WOLB in a traditional 4-3 defense. I don’t expect him back in 2024. Long Jr. is a good fit. Need another violent ILB.

Riley was exposed down the stretch. He’s not starter quality. I felt our front 7 allowed too many plays to get into the open field.

Teams that are still playing were making solo tackles and wrapping guys up at the POA.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

according to PFF our line backers gave up the most yards, completions and TD’s than any other squad on the D by a big margin. We were slaughtered over the middle by QB’s

        Yeah they got gashed.

  84. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s 1/17/24… and outside of Chris Grier and our scouting department, I think there are TWO elephants in the room…

    — X doesn’t want to take a paycut and is insinuating(?) a trade… that’s going to hurt our cap situation. We can’t cut him (devastating dead $$$), but we could trade him if the $$$ are right… meaning, we don’t eat too much $$$ in a trade. In that event, we likely won’t get a day 2 pick in a trade.

    — T-Stead may retire. In the event he does, the sooner he lets us know, the better. That would make the LT position our main target in the 1st round, I suspect.

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t buy the complimentary football died thing Tim. We turned the Bills over 3 times, but Allen was still able to make big plays, especially in the 4th QTR to win it. 1 TD doesn’t get it done. That’s when the big boys step up and win games, our guy is putting up 1 TD a game and everyones making excuses. Of course the defensive injuries hurt us, but nowhere near as much as our QB coming up small did. Stop making excuses, and see it for what it is.

If for some reason you think Tua can improve, that’s different, it really is. To excuse his poor play during crunch time is not. I’m not convinced in the least that he can improve, and as much as I would hate to be right, I feel like if he throws caution to the wind and starts playing more loose and runs a bit more, he might even take a step back or have a worse season, or get injured.

  86. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Poupart agrees with Mike. So do I.

The Miami Dolphins have a major Tua dilemma.

In the past two seasons, Tua Tagovailoa has given the Miami Dolphins their most prolific passer since Dan Marino’s Hall of Fame career ended with his retirement in March of 2000.

Tua led the NFL in passer rating in 2022, followed that leading the league in passing yards, succeeded in playing every snap (other than mop-up time in 2023, and was named the AFC starting Pro Bowl quarterback.

    GOOD BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH

Tua does have the numbers to back him, starting with the league-leading 4,624 passing yards during the 2023 regular season and the NFL-best 105.5 passer rating of 2022, but exactly where has that gotten the Dolphins?

Yes, they did make the playoffs the past two seasons and had another winning record for the fourth time in Tua’s four seasons in the NFL.

But the franchise’s playoff drought continues — and, unless, you’ve tuned out the NFL recently, you know it’s now the longest active streak in the NFL.

Here’s the bigger problem: What over the past two seasons should give the Dolphins or their fans much confidence moving forward that they’re ready to be legitimate Super Bowl contenders or not merely a team good enough to make the playoffs but not much more — be the Dallas Cowboys, in other words.

    The evidence is pretty convincing.

Over the past two seasons, the Dolphins have a 3-12 record against playoff opponents, including their two playoff losses.

Since victories at Baltimore and against Buffalo in Week 2 and 3 of the 2022 season, that record is 1-12, the one victory coming against the aforementioned Cowboys at Hard Rock Stadium on Christmas Eve.

The Dolphins were 1-6 against playoff opponents in 2023. The Dolphins were outscored 224-113 in those games, an average of 32-19.

Put in simpler terms, the Dolphins couldn’t hang with the big boys.

    SOME TROUBLING STATS

Diving more into Tua’s stats, not everything is touchdowns and completions.

The first thing that jumps out is that Tua’s 2023 numbers are so dramatically different depending on the quality of the opposition.

Tua torched non-playoff teams to the tune of a 71.7 completion percentage with 22 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 110.7 passer rating.

Against the seven playoff opponents, those numbers change to 62.8 completion percentage with eight touchdowns, seven picks and an 80.2 passer rating.

And then there’s coming through in the clutch.

The Dolphins faced six fourth-quarter comeback situations, and ended up winning only two of those games — in the opener against the Chargers and in that Dallas victory.

But they failed against the Eagles, in the regular season game against the Chiefs, in that painful Tennessee Monday night, and in the battle for the AFC East title against Buffalo in Week 18.

Using one clutch metric, Tua had a 67.8 passer rating in 2023 with the Dolphins trailing and less than four minutes remaining, actually lower than his career average of 68.0 in that category.

In that department, Tua falls short — way short — of the upper-echelon QBs in the AFC, the QBs the Dolphins will have to overcome to reach their goal of reaching the Super Bowl.

Some examples: Lamar Jackson has a career passer rating with his team trailing with less than four minutes left of 118.2. Joe Burrow is at 107.4. Josh Allen is at 98.8. Patrick Mahomes is at 88.8. C.J. Stroud was at 107.9 in his rookie season in 2023.

The Kansas City Chiefs a 41-20 record (.672) in Smith’s first four seasons with the team, during which time he was named to the Pro Bowl twice. That didn’t stop the Chiefs from drafting Mahomes in 2017.

Garoppolo was even more successful in San Francisco with a winning percentage of .691 and two seasons with a passer rating higher than 100 before the 49ers decided to move on.

Peyton used to suck in the playoffs and big games until he didn’t. Eli used to suck in big games until he didn’t. Steve Young couldn’t beat Dallas until he could. Everyone’s darling Lamar Jackson has blown chunks in the playoffs. Tua has the talent and ability. He has played 1 game in the playoffs in adverse conditions. It is hardly time to give up on the best QB we have had since 1999.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

All those QB’s can throw outside the numbers. Teams have/had to defend the whole field, not just the middle. That’s why we can’t or struggle to beat good defenses. That is something that will never change with Tua. Not saying we can’t win it all with him but we have to have a healthy OL and healthy RB’s for a solid run game.

Oronde Gadsden II is returning to Syracuse this year making the full time switch from WR to TE. He’s 6’5 223 and runs a 4.5. Missed last season with a fractured foot. Will be interesting to keep track of him and see if he bulks up for the position. He’s not that physical but has great hands like his dad.

  89. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Rock! That article sums it all up. I gave him his chances, but you can see he’s not a clutch performer. He can be franchise QB, he can be your guy, as long as Super Bowl aspirations are low on your want list. He basically needs everything to fall perfectly for him, while other QB’s put their team on their backs.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To reiterate, the good thing is that we have Tua under contract for 2024. I know y’all are worried about the $23M contract, but I’d rather lose the $10-12M we could save with a new contract than lose $180M on a contract on the WRONG QB.

Didn’t he end the streak against the Bills in 2022, he’s never lost to the Pats or Jets but “he” can’t beat the top teams. Okay when does the rest of the team come in? Did we forget his 4th quarter game against the Ravens last year?

Sorry… many of you are barking up the wrong tree. You don’t move on from a 25 year old QB with a .63% win rate with two years under a HC that believes in him with an offense that fits his strengths.

Don’t make me summon the Patience Brigade… again!!

    😂@Patience Brigade

I never said we should move on from him. What I’ve said was I would be hesitant to sign him to a long-term contract with a ton of guaranteed money. they are almost certainly going to have to extend him and sign him to a bigger contract because of the cab situation. I would do that where there is not a lot of guaranteed money in case things don’t work out. and he beat the bills and he beat the ravens. Once it’s easy to cherry pick some of the good games he has had, but my point was not that he hasn’t won any games against good teams, but his record is very poor in that department. Again, as I’ve stated before, it’s not entirely him, but he is the quarterback, and they get most of the accolades, but also most of the blame

I wouldn’t be upset if we took JPJ at #21. Again, with this OC class and others available in F/A, I don’t see the need to resign Connor Williams at top dollar as he is considered the top F/A center. Coming off injury may change what he gets paid though.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Hunt should be the priority resign on the OL.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I honestly don’t see the point of signing Connor Williams

There are a few centers available in the draft

Williams had way too many bad snaps this year
I also don’t think our OL performed any worse with Eichenberg at center

Williams was rated very highly by pff but honestly I don’t get it
I think we can draft a center in the first 2 rounds who can immediately replace him

And we can have Eichenberg play center until a rookie is ready if he needs time

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      also I agree

      Hunt should be the priority
I don’t think we should sign Conor Williams – even if we had a lot of money to spend

Tim we don’t make any decisions. Should we stop discussions because of it?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No not at all, but saying stuff like let him play another year on his 5th year contract is kind of a waste of time when it’s already being reported that they’re working on a new deal.

  94. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Also, one of the founding members of the PB now has a mushroom cloud avi, so good luck getting the band together!

Well there is no talk of firing Chris Grief either, but I am a Dolphins fans so I live in hope.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think he should be. He put together a good roster. He has no control over injuries.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I disagree he put together a paper tiger that will fall apart next season. He sold out and went all in for a wild card loss. He IS responsible for being 40+ million over the PROJECTED cap with only 30 some odd players under contract and the only solution being restructuring the already restructured contracts of the 6 guys getting paid 80% of the salary cap and pushing their cap hits down the road to further the future hell. See my Avi. The ONLY solution at this point. He swung and missed. 6 years into a 3 year rebuild…

  96. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Tua shrinks away when the going gets tough. His play against playoff teams is all you need to watch. Almost like he has DCS back there.

  97. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Man! I just spent $20 on a paperback (when did they become so fucking expensive?) by Sarah J Maas “The Assassin’s Blade”. I was excited because it had gotten good reviews and there were a bunch of them in the throne of glass Novella and follow up series I just threw it in the trash not even keeping it went right in the garbage it’s that bad I’m upset again because I don’t have a book to read but it’s better than reading trash

  98. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I hope Ross sells the team. Grief screwed the pooch and built a paper tiger that will come apart next year. We need another major tear down and rebuild. They should trade Tyreek Hill, trade Waddle and whoever else they can blow this fucking thing up, get a franchise quarterback, and start again with the new owner and front office. Hopefully the new owner will fire the scouting department and raid the rest of the NFL’s scouts. It’s been 20 years and grief has proven that he has no talent for evaluating offensive lineman Ross is never going to get a Super Bowl he should give up now and pass the team to someone else.
