Early in the process, Dolphins look poised to take a step back, or two, or three . . .

Here’s the deal Dolphins fans. The NFL Free Agency period begins in FIVE DAYS, Wednesday March 13th. I have no inside information on what our front office is doing, planning, hoping to accomplish, but I will tell you this. For those of you who want to see Tua get a $50M per year extension, if that contract is not signed and completed before March 13, the start of NFL Free Agency, then just scrap it, and let the kid play on his 5th year contract. I’m going to be as transparent as I can. If we don’t have the cap savings and money available to try and sign free agents, most notably, our own players who most absolutely deserve to be re-signed, then there’s no good, intelligent, logical reason to give him a contract at all. We need that money in hand, before teams with tons of cap space swoop in and sign our players, and other equivalent players like them are all gone. Here’s the simple logic, we couldn’t get past good teams with a talented roster, we’re not going to get past good teams with a severely diminished roster.

We signed journeyman TE Jonnu Smith and the Dolphins fans rejoice. Like they say in the south, where Jonnu most recently played in Atlanta, “Bless Your Heart”. If Jonnu was just an add after we signed DT Christian Wilkins (or a player of his caliber) and likewise for OG Robert Hunt, fine. We need every dollar and while it’s not that Jonnu Smith can’t help us, it’s just odd to be spending money we don’t have. It’s actually shocking to me that we had ZERO touchdowns from our TE’s in 2023. Durham Smythe is basically a #2 TE, and Julian Hill is a project that I believe might be overrated. Tanner Conner is probably a never will be, but somehow he’ll shuttle back and forth between the practice squad and the 53 man roster. Truth is, none of this matters until we have a solid O-line, and right now, we are so far away from that being that case. Our starting LT is still on the fence between retiring and coming back. We have no LG, Liam Eichenberg is our OC as it stands today, we have no RG, and we have RT Austin Jackson. So many excuses were rifled at Tua detractors due to the perceived inefficiencies of the offensive line, and we have some big holes to fill just to claw back to where we were last season.

Despite what some of our fans think here, Christian Wilkins is probably going to go Day 1 of Free Agency. It will happen even faster if the first domino falls, DT Chris Jones re-signs with the Chiefs. Some team is going to throw a boatload of cash at Christian Wilkins, and unless it’s us, he’s gone. That would be a damn shame folks. Some potentially good news is that FA OG Robert Hunt posted a picture of Hard Rock Stadium from the Dolphins practice facility which could be taken as a positive sign that he intends to come back to Miami. “Dark Mike” thinks he could be taking one last look. One thing that could work in our favor from what I’ve heard is OC Connor Williams who is rehabbing from a torn ACL is prepared to be patient in Free Agency and not take a lower contract because of the potential of him not being available early in the season.

Back to Tua, and I can hear the groans already, but it needs to be said. There are QB’s out there in the NFL that can take over a game and practically will their team to victory. Patrick Mahomes has done it so many times, we expect it. Josh Allen, who is not nearly as accurate as our QB Tua Tagovailoa is another QB capable of doing what it takes to win. SFO QB Brock Purdy, at a young age has shown that ability, in big games to do what needs to be done. If we’re going to put a lesser product on the field this season, and signs are pointing in that direction right now, it’s probably the most foolish thing we can do to throw a contract somewhere in the realm of $50M per season to Tua Tagovailoa. He’s simply not one of those QB’s stated above. If one player was OUT that was the reason why we lost. If any of you expect him to play better with less, and he would have to because even if Christian Wilkins was not a FA, we have huge question marks as to when both of our pass rushing OLB’s, Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips will be available to play, and play well. We bid good-bye to long tenured CB Xavien Howard, and while we have DB Jalen Ramsey on one side, we have no bonafide player to pencil in opposite Ramsey. We have 1 Safety on the roster, (Jevon Holland), and I might add he’s been grumbling about getting paid. He’s set to make about $4.3M this season and will be a FA in 2025. At inside LB we have David Long, backup Duke Riley, and backup to the backup Channing Tindall.

The 2024 NFL Draft is April 25th. In a year where we have no cap money, we also have no draft picks. Well, that’s an exaggeration, but with so many holes to fill, the Dolphins go to Detroit armed with picks #21 (RD 1), #55 (RD 2), and then hang around until RD 5 as so many good players will be off the board, but we pick again at #157 (RD 5), #186 (RD 6), #200 (RD 6), and finally #236 (RD 7). Offensive line seems to be the favorite choice for pick #21, and it seems like OC Jackson Powers-Johnson from Oregon or Duke OC Graham Barton have been the favorites. Both are considered plug and play guys who will start immediately. If we’re unsuccessful re-signing DT Christian Wilkins, I’d expect DT would be our next priority, you have to win in the trenches. T’Vondre Sweat is a possibility, but he’d be more of a replacement for NT Raekwon Davis , not DT Christian Wilkins. DT Braden Fiske from Florida State would be more of a Christian Wilkins type player, and Kris Jenkins’ son, Kris Jenkins also fits that bill, but both of these defensive tackles are not the pedigree of Christian Wilkins.

I had seen rumors early on and before the Chiefs tagged CB L’Jarius Sneed that the Dolphins were interested in him. Now that they’ve tagged him, it seems less likely, but for some reason the rumor mill loves to throw WR Jaylen Waddle’s name into the mix. I can’t see that, that just opens up another hole and takes away a huge part of our offense to shore up the defense. It’s like putting your fingers in a place that’s leaking in 11 places, when you only have 10 fingers. Oh, we’ve signed two DT’s, Isaiah Mack from the Baltimore Ravens, a part time player, and i stress part time, only 22% of the defensive snaps over his 4 year career. We also signed DT Daviyon Nixon from the Carolina Panthers, another part time player (18%) of the snaps on defense. We have such an uphill climb just to get back to the roster that couldn’t win big games, it’s so darn hard to expect anything good in this upcoming season. Honestly, if Chris Grier came out and said “I swung for the fences last year, and we didn’t make it, so from here on in, I’m going to be more fiscally responsible, we’re going to take a step back this season and be ready to compete in ’25”. I think I could handle it. That would obviously include Tua playing on his 5th year contract and showing whether he’s capable of taking the next step, although with a weakened roster, not sure if it would necessarily fair. I don’t know if Grier has some magic tricks he’s going to spring on us and somehow save the season, but it’s looking bleak mates. Sorry, it just is.

Bozeman is an interesting free agent

he’s kind of average, not viewed as a superior center

but he started every game last year

he actually started every game over the last 5 years with the exception of 5 games in 2022

    don’t know if that’s injury

but given what we went through last year on the OL – I just want guys that are durable and he fits that model

I don’t think he will be too pricey

it’s a crowded market for center. We are losing the guy perceived to be the best one, even though he can’t snap the ball for shit 🤷‍♂️

I would love to sign a guy who can snap the ball and who starts games for a low price contract

Then maybe we can take a hard look at drafting an OT, potential trade down and still get a guy like Guyton and make room for a DT and a mismatch TE before day 2 is over

our OT can play guard like Tunsil did until/when Armstead can’t play

    just me pigballing…

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

there’s a few centers available in the draft too

We have no cap money, so the draft is the one place where you get players for cheap.

    *****

that’s why I’m talking about low $ free agents

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Will Bozeman be cheap? I feel like you overpay for any player in FA.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

there liKe a Half a dozen free agent centers out there

  11. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

the cap went up 30 million is off-season

if you can reduce the cap hit in 2024 by restructuring armstead and adding 5m to 2025 – then you’ve beat he system

bc it’s going to go up more than 5m In 2025

it’s costs Ross more $ – but Ross doesn’t care how much we spend

The only restriction is the cap ceiling

I think it’s a brilliant move by Grier but I do expect anyone o I’ve him credit

  12. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

also in terms of armstead missing games

    that’s reality

I would be surprised if he plays 10 games next year

but if you draft an OT and swing him inside – you can probably move him outside if armstead gets hurt

and when armstead plays – he’s very good

so I’m glad he’s back and I’m glad he is giving us cap room in 2024

    ***
yes, I think this is right

not a cap expert by any stretch but that’s idea. We have to sit out the first wave of free agency

we will lose Wilkins, Connor Williams and probably Hunt and Van Ginkle but we will eventually have money to spend

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – I don’t believe Grier that we will have similar talent, or even close. We’re losing a top 5 DT and our best OL. That’s very difficult to replace

  17. jahndont's avatar jahndont says:

we can restructure Ramsey, Tua (even a new deal believe it or not) ,and Tyreek just like we restructured Armstead. As long as we don’t add years (except in Tua’s case), we won’t really be making the next couple cap years any more painful then they’re already looking to be. Also to Piggy’s point, if the cap grows at a healthy clip the next few years, we’ll have a fighting chance on the business side.

Does that mean I think Tua’s the one? Not necessarily, but seems like every analyst I respect on the business side says you have to dona deal because at least he’s a legit qb and without one you’re lost in the wilderness.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We can, but aren’t you at least somewhat surprised we haven’t done any of those things while free agency looms just 3 days away? How are even going to participate in trying to re-sign any of our players, or any others without the cap space? Granted, we have 2 more days to get there, but I’m worried pal

  18. jahndont's avatar jahndont says:

I also think Wilkins is simply going to be too expensive to bring back, but not using a tag on him was mandatory for us to start Free Agency with any room to work at all.

I’ll miss him if he leaves though. Hoping we can keep Van G though. I bought his Jersey last season lol.

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They probably begged Armstead to not retire. If he retired before 3/16/24, his cap hit would have gone up about and extra 3.2 mil. If he were to retire after 3/16/34 when some of his salary becomes guaranteed, his cap hit would have gone up by an extra 11.4 mil.

  20. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just remember, before we vilify Wilkins for asking too much, Grier put us in this situation by not wanting to pay him appropriately last year before this season. We can’t know the cap situation for the next season but you know Grier did. Now it’s going to be Wilkins asked for too much. He’s going to get paid in line with the other contracts that were just signed, and it’s going to be a damn shame that it won’t be us paying him.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Do you know what Grier’s camp is asking for? Whatever we offered him last year wasn’t enough. That’s the business side of the NFL.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Of course not Tim, but I’d be willing to bet it was less than what he gets now in FA. These are the things Grier is responsible for, it’s his job, and he failed. We don’t need to take care of these things, he does. Like I’ve said numerous times, Wilkins bet on himself and showed what he can do. 5 seasons of excellent play. Soon, we’re likely going to pay Tua a shit ton of money based on a whole lot less, but no one will blink. It looks like Grier isn’t doing well on the “business side”.

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Yes, QB is a different beast, but if we’re not going to sign our guys and put a competitive team around Tua, he’s under contract in ’24, why pay him huge sums of money when it’s not even necessary? You, and everyone here said signing Tua will free up money to keep Wilkins and Hunt, and now everyone is dancing to different music, and now the songs playing are “Wilkins is asking too much” and “Hunt was never a Pro Bowl G or an all pro”. Funny how that happens . . .

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What I would like to happen and the reality of the business are two different things. Just like Giants fans all want Barkley back, but don’t think he will be. If every team signed all their players there wouldn’t be FA.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Of course, but if I’m going to be honest, I hate when everyone just falls in line and gets all compliant. I hate that we’re going to lose Wilkins and Hunt because that’s not what good organizations do. Each one could easily be said to be the best man on their respective units. Good organizations don’t let those guys go. I know it hasn’t actually happened yet, but the writing is on the wall.

I’m pissed and going to rail against this shit as it happens, I’m not going to just accept their bullshit side of the story. Doesn’t mean I’m not going to be a fan anymore, but a disgruntled fan I will be.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The difference between you and I is you’re more emotional about it and I’ve said many times in recent months I’m not emotionally invested anymore in sports even though I do still enjoy them. I like the game and the competition. I root for my teams and the results are what they are. Maybe one day one of them will win a championship and I’ll get to be emotional about it for a few hours or maybe even days.

The QB market is a big problem. But you have to pay them when you have a competent one. If that position is weak you don’t win.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – no doubt. I spend way too much time on this team for me not to be emotionally invested.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hear ya! I know what that feels like. Sports wear me down too often when I get too emotionally invested. Just the other day I turned on the Flyers/Caps game Flyers up 2-0. I got to watch the Caps score 5 unanswered goals to win 5-2. I was laughing as it was happening. I’ve turned on Mets games when they’re up 5-0 only to watch them lose 9-7. 😂

    AS OF THE MOMENT…

I see us trading down from R1P21 to the bottom tier of the 1st round, to regain an additional pick (might even end up being a 2nd rounder). There should be a stud O-Lineman sitting there for us in the late 1st in this deep draft for O-Linemen. I hope it’s either JPJ, Graham Barton, Tyler Guyton, or Troy Fautanu who’s there for us.

R2P55, I’m looking to replace Christian Wilkins (I think Wilkins is already gone). I’d hope for either Kris Jenkins or Branden Fiske to be there.

After the tradedown from R1P21? Maybe it’s a 2nd rounder or maybe it’s a 3rd rounder… I’d be looking at RG Cooper Beebe, S Kam Kinchens, NT T’Vondre Sweat, LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr, or maybe the best EDGE rusher available.

It’s still too early for me, but we’re getting closer to seeing the BIG PICTURE, starting tomorrow…

    PHI 6 tackles 0 sacks

    KC 3 tackles 0 sacks

    DAL 4 tackles 0 sacks

    BAL 2 tackles 0 sacks

    BUF 1 sack 7 tackles 2 games

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve thought of doing the same, but I wouldn’t advise doing that. If we can stay in the 1st with a tradedown, we’re going to get a STUD.

Remember every draft is overrated by the mocksters. That’s their business. From what I’ve read and listened to about this QB class don’t be surprised if none of them pan out as franchise guys.

It’s all hype! Of course this draft will yield good or even great players. But most teams never have a 1st round grade on 32 prospects. Maybe 15-18. They come from every round every year. Even UDFAs surprise.

    4 years, 110M

    that’s a lot of $

  47. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I have been calling Wilkins to the Raiders for over the last month.

The Raiders DC was the Dolphins DC when we drafted Wilkins.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

so start calling for Huny and Van Ginkle to re-sign with the Folphins for bargain prices…lol

the raiders are no stranger to spending big $ in free

agency – it makes sense for them to go after Wilkins.

Good for Wilkins but I’m glad we aren’t paying him that kind of money

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This is why we should have tagged and traded him to the raiders.

Oh yeah, we might get a 3rd round pick for him next year. woo hoo

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jags have signed former Bills center Mitch Morse to a great deal of 2 years at 10.5 mil.

Now jags are going to sign Bills WR Gabe Davis on a 3 year deal.

Bills may be looking at WR with their 1st pick sign they are going to move their OG over to play center.

  50. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

seiler’s contract is less than 11m a season

compare that with Wilkins new contract of 27m a season

    huge difference

  51. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Where they really fucked up is not giving Wilkins an extension after the 2022 season. At that time, they could have done it for less than 20 mil per.

  52. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

BBmike it’s too high IMO but I do think Wilkins has earned it

I was just thinking 2 how do the Chiefs keep jones but we lose Wilkins

and I think the obvious answer is Tyreke’s Hills contract. And frankly I wouldn’t do it differently than Grier

if this is the price for acquiring Hill – I pay that price

Not fair to compare Wilkins and Sieler. I think Sieler is gonna really miss Wilkins both personally and professionally. If we don’t get a legit replacement for Wilkins, Sieler will fall off production wise for sure this season

  58. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Along with Wilkins, we will also see Hunt go to another team.

Spotrac has us at 23.2 mil over the cap right now. Though, that does not count the reworking of Armstead’s contract. It also doesn’t count the new contracts on Robert Jones, Elijah Campbell and Nik Needham.

Still have a bunch to clear.

The only good news is that we only need to sign 3 more players to get to 51 then these bottom tier guys will stop making our cap go up so much as we fill out the roster.

I believe their plan is to start Eich at center and start Robert Jones at RG. Maybe they resign Wynn or maybe they draft a rookie to play LG.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yes, we’ll drop 18.5 mil when X comes off the books and whatever they did with Armstead probably gets us under the cap. Though, the contracts on Jones, Campbell and Needham probably have us hovering around a fat goose egg in cap.

    Who’s excited for 2024?

  90. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Honestly, I figured Wilkins was gone when we didn’t extend him last year. I figured he was going to break the bank. I’m just pissed we’re only getting a 3rd for him.

Hunt surprises me; I thought we’d keep him, but 20 mil per, wow. If we’d gotten appropriate value for losing Wilkins, I could have lived with losing Hunt and getting a comp pick. But to lose two top end guys for a lousy couple of comp picks is just sad.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think both of those deals were outrageously high. Now we know why they weren’t signed to extensions last year.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wilkins always seemed like a guy to me that was going to get the biggest deal he could and we might not be able to keep him. Putting ourselves in a position where we weren’t able to tag and trade him or keep him another year is the bigger issue. He was a major asset we lost for just a 3rd rd pick.

20 mil for a guard is insane. I’d have been fine not re-signing him and getting a 3rd if we’d gotten something more for Wilkins.

  91. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We’re all but definitely going to trade down from R1P21 to the bottom of the 1st round to recoup a day 2 selection, IMO. We NEED the picks.

We’re going to get $18M after June 1st (X’s $$$), and somebody like LB Bobby Wagner should still be available then. I hear Wagner is willing to leave the West Coast to resume his career.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

See, I said this yesterday. It’s hilarious!!! Do you not remember me saying that you guys would say this?

We could have paid Wilkins last season, we gambled and lost, he gambled, and won. They could have extended Hunt last season too, but they were too busy trading and bringing in all those players via trade etc. Grier made it seem like we could do that and still operate business as usual and sign whoever we want. Well, as it turns out, they can’t. He mischaracterized the entire situation and now us fans are fucked.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Wilkins is the one who rejected our offer last year. He was banking on this chance

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You keep saying we could have signed him and Hunt last year but that’s not true. Their agents wanted the FA market and they turned down our offers. You’re allowing your emotions to get in the way of the business side of things. We weren’t paying them elite money because neither player is elite. It’s okay to say they’re good players and not consider them elite.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – We could have paid what he was asking for last year, which was way less than he got in FA this season. I’m not the GM, but he’s the type of player I would have tried to keep.

The next gamble on the docket is going to be giving Tua a deal for a 5YR/$225M deal and we’re gonna lose that gamble too.
