Dolphins have revamped the roster – Did we get better, or worse?

There are differing opinions on the current state of the Miami Dolphins roster as we head into the 2024 NFL Draft, just a couple of days more than a month away. I try to listen and read and absorb various sources. Some of them “homer” sources, others what might be considered “haters” and then others that are from outside either of the former two, totally neutral opinions. In general, the most common feeling is that the quality of the roster has gone down, the talent. Chris Perkins from the Sun Sentinel was on the Joe Rose Show this morning and Perkins feels the Dolphins have assembled a tougher roster. Elaborating on this, he feels the addition of Aaron (Ay-run) Brewer was a welcome one, and that he will bring toughness to the interior offensive line. I believe toughness is a tangible issue for our team, as we always seemed to get pushed around and beaten down by certain teams, namely the Bills, Ravens and Chiefs. In a discussion last night with a fellow Dolphins fan on twitter, or “X” if you prefer, I was called a “hater”. The discussion began after I responded to a tweet regarding our current WR’s corp, and how we could really use OBJ. I responded by listing KC’s WR depth chart from last year as an example of how ridiculous that statement is. Having 3 great WR’s doesn’t get you a championship. You have to win in the trenches.

So this brings me to the newest Miami Dolphins headline. Odell Beckham Jr. visited the Miami Dolphins facility yesterday, was given the red carpet treatment by the organization, was given a tour by none other than everyone’s favorite HC Mike McDaniel, showed him the lush grass playing field, as well as the lush grass practice facility. “Those grass fields would be nice for those 31 year old knees, eh?” Here’s the deal, if we can get OBJ for say $5-7M for a one year or even two year deal, go ahead and bring him in. Just realize that he got paid FIFTEEN MILLION DOLLARS last season, so MM is going to have throw quite the sales pitch to get OBJ here in Miami for the contract I would prefer. Now realistically, I don’t work for the Dolphins so it doesn’t matter, but what NFL team has the highest or near the highest cap allocation at WR, and has won the Super Bowl? Don’t bother looking, you ain’t gonna find it.

I can see the merit in bringing in Odell Beckham Jr. Last season, when either Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle went out, the offense definitely missed them and we struggled. If you bring in OBJ, he could theoretically replace either Hill or Waddle on the outside for a while, although to be fair, OBJ has played a full season only twice in his 10 year career. At 31, don’t expect that to improve, so therefore if we sign him, we have to do so at a reasonable price. I would also like to see third year WR Erik Ezukanma get an opportunity. He looked good early on, he got touches in the run game and short passing and screen game, and showed the ability to get run after catch yardage. We brought in TE Jonnu Smith to help with that, having another outlet couldn’t hurt. Our offense is predicated on quick throws and with guys that can get yardage after the catch when Hill and Waddle are covered, they can be a QB’s best friend. We also re-signed Braxton Berrios, so the WR room is getting a bit crowded already, without adding OBJ.

This brings me to my next point. I discussed toughness at the start here, and while I’m not enamored with any of the guys we brought in for the defensive line, maybe toughness was more of a factor than actual talent. Sieler is back at LDE or DT, whichever way you want to label it, and now Benito Jones will be at the NT spot. I always felt Raekwon Davis 6’7 325 was miscast as a NT, so maybe the shorter, more stout Jones at 6’1 335 is a better fit there. At the moment, and unofficially, Da’Shawn Hand may play RDE, the spot previously occupied by Christian Wilkins. This is the spot I believe we draft first in the upcoming draft. I know we need another OL, and you can make an argument for the interior or tackle spots and not be wrong either way, but to me the most glaring spot is RDE. We lost Wilkins and now must replace him with a legitimate threat and a talented player. Byron Murphy would be my 1st RD pick if he’s there. There are a couple of guys that may be there with our 2nd pick, assuming we don’t move up or back with our 1st. Jer’Zhan Newton, Braden Fiske and Ruke Orhorhoro could be 2nd RD options. There are some that think WR will be one of our top picks, that would shock me. Build up those trenches, you know, where we tend to lose against most teams. We’ve already potentially taken a step back there already, so I go either 1) DT and 2) OL, or vice versa.

It should be DT or OL, if however someone falls at another position we should either trade out or scoop up

WR in the 1st or 2nd would shock me too

If EZ actually plays this year we shouldn’t need OBJ

Landing Murphy, Newton or Fiske would make me feel a lot better about the DL. Problem is the first 2 are likely 1st rounders and have to take one at #21. Fiske might be gone by #55 if we go OL at #21. If we go DT at #21, more than likely all the starting caliber OL will be gone at #55 except maybe OG Cooper Bebee.

I am leaning towards OT/OG Graham Barton at #21 and Braden Fiske or Kris Jenkins at #55.

Mike – I feel like we’ve put ourselves in a position where we just have to find an impact player on that D-line. I can’t see us trotting out Hand, Jones and Sieler and ask them to play the majority of the snaps. It’s funny how we had Wilkins playing tons of snaps making a ridiculous amount of tackles but not a lot of sacks and they said we need more sacks, and he gave that to us. Now we’re going to have Hand, or another DT who has little or nothing pass rush ability and doesn’t get into the opponents backfield? Not buying that. I’d almost bet we take a DT at #21

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @flasportsbuzz

For Dolphins fans in here: Kinchens, James Williams, Matt Lee – among other Canes – all will audition for Dolphins at the Dolphins’ Local Day. Leonard Taylor also will; Dolphins appreciate the skill set with LT but don’t have a 3rd or 4th round pick.

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m not too worried about the passrush from our DTs replacing Wilkins, as long as we get pressure in general especially if Phillips and Chubb start the season

Ideally I’d like Shaq in that vet passrush role, to save him for 3rd downs and against the better teams, instead of burning him out against lessor opponents, while replacing injured players

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Look at it from this perspective. Sieler kicked ass last season, had 10 sacks. If there’s no threat from the other side, what do you think the offense is going to do? Sieler will see double teams more often than not, and if Jones or the end on the other side don’t get pressure, Sieler will be neutralized as well, which puts everything on Chubb and Phillips, or Barrett and/or whoever plays opposite them. Not sure that’s gonna cut it Steve. Your thoughts?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

if Seiler is doubled, that leaves Chubb, Phillips and/or Shaq singled, I’ll take that all day long, every day

A day 3 OL who is interesting in that he is very athletic in Wisconsin center Tanner Bortolini, 6’4 303. He is VERY quick. He set an all-time combine record for OL in the 3 cone drill and was also first in the short shuttle, 3rd in 10 yard split and ran a 4.94 forty. He’s got the athletic skills he just needs work in other areas. Again, we’re talking 6th/7th round prospects.

And a solid no-go on JJ McCarthy at Michigan. I watched enough of him as my friend is a huge Michigan fan. Talked about NOT being able to carry a team…I don’t care how tough the kid is, he is terrible…lol.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Shhhhh! JJ McCarthy is going to be the next Peyton Manning, didn’t ya know?!! LOL

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The more I watch Illinios TE Tip Reiman, 6’5 271, 4.64 forty, 28 reps on bench, the more I like his potential. He’s a beast blocking and with the ball in his hands. I think Illinois underutilized him in the pass game.

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, fair enough. But 2024 is all that matters with the roster we have. If we don’t win with it in next couple of years we’re likely starting over. That’s kind of how it works. Look at the Titans, they had a nice run for a few years, fell short and now they got blown up. Go for it when you can.

  23. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

However you think about Grier in his latest interview he said we’re always going to take the best player on their board. We as fans all focus on DT/OL early and rightfully so. But don’t be surprised if it’s not those positions based on how the draft unfolds.

Mike McDaniel was at Michigan’s pro day

    some decent prospects

lot of OL that are looking like day 3 prospects

Kris Jenkins is probably the notable DL prospect

some decent WRs if we are looking for a WR and don’t sign OBJ – personally I would rather draft a rookie WR (late) than sign OBJ

is OBJ ‘a teammate – Jarvis Landry still playing?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The WR type we’re missing is the small slot guy, that gets open often after the QB scrambles, that’s why I’m in Vegas to recruit Renfrow😜

You can say what you want about Tua last year being horrible after the play broke down, he does need someone to throw to, when Hill and Waddle are doubled

Jonnu should help with that, hopefully like Gates did for Rivers

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep and that also helps the RBs get open as receivers. Too many weapons takes a toll on a defense.

I guess the ole tag and trade didn’t work for the Chiefs all that well. They still got a higher 3rd next year instead of a 3rd round comp and a higher 7th in the swap this year.

Raiders really wanted Wilkins. I still think we could have gotten 2nd round pick #44 from the Raiders for him in a tag and trade. At worst, pick #77 in the 3rd. That would have changed our whole draft. Instead, we will get a 3rd next year around pick 97.

Would have been much better to get that pick this year since they are in win now mode.

I was very disappointed in Raekwon Davis. It wasn’t entirely his fault, he was playing a position he didn’t belong in here. He’s much better suited as a 4-3 DT, doesn’t fit at all the NT spot in an odd front. I don’t think he’s ever going to be a dynamic player, but he might do better than he did here in the right scheme.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Personally, I feel RaekwonDavis was better suited (what with his height, weight, and wingspan) to be an Offensive Tackle. Too bad Saban didn’t recognize as much in Tuscaloosa.

Unless he had an overly impressive waist-bend and/or knee-bend (he doesn’t), he was never going to get low enough to attack much shorter/stouter Centers and Guards.

I wish him the best in his future endevours.

I hear ya, and it’s why I’m really pissed off we didn’t retain AVG. We had the $$$ to do so, but we let him walk into FA. SMH

  48. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Here’s my take on the Draft…

IF we want Tua to continue to get rid of the ball under 2.2 seconds, it won’t matter who comprises our O-Line. Should this continue, don’t expect any receiver other than ‘Reek or Da Penguin to be constantly targeted. Thus, it would make no sense to draft an O-Lineman in the 1st round… nor would it make sense to add an OBJ as our 3rd WR.

I don’t like that… not in the least. We need Tua to take the next step, to have enough time (more like 3 seconds) to get a read on his 3rd and 4th targets. So if we want Tua to take the next step, ya almost HAVE to target the BPA O-Lineman in the 1st round.

Conversely, replacing Christian Wilkins is also very important. So to take the BPA D-Lineman in the 1st round is also understandable.

To me? It all comes down to Tua. If we’re not trying to help him improve, we may as well trade him now… and I don’t want Tua to be

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

… and I don’t want Tua to be a ‘gimmick’ QB… where he HAS to get rid of the ball at 2.2 seconds. PROTECT the investment and allow him to flourish… to become ever BETTER.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So as of the moment, I’m going the BPA O-Lineman with our first pick. Subject to change, of course…

  49. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think it’s nothing less than a miracle that Tua hasn’t developed DCS*™ (David Carr Syndrome). Why? He has never been able to trust his O-Line since being drafted by our Phins… hence the 2.2 seconds or less to get the ball out, in order to secure his safety.

FIX THE O-LINE, FOOLS!!! Don’t ruin another QB, dammit.

  50. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Until we know the status of Phillips and Chubb we need Barrett to be a force early on along with someone else on the edge. Our LB group and secondary could be very good. But new DC, philosophy and personnel might take some time to get on the same page and be at full strength. Oh wait, what is that? 😂

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But that’s exactly WHY some think we’ll take a step back in ’24. YES, it will take some time to gel under a new DC with new personnel.

  51. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tua knows he has to be better. But so does the entire team. Our late season collapse was not all on Tua. He was one of our best players.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

ABSOLUTELY. Now let’s protect the Tua, instead of him HAVING to get rid of the ball so quickly before he gets sacked or hit.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I mean, he has now PROVEN he can take the licks and his confidence is brimming. If we can now protect him in order to make those second and third reads, he becomes a complete NFL QB.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Drew Brees, anybody?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right! MM is trying to make our offense impossible to defend. It’s all about matchups and durability.

The more weapons we have the less dogs getting in our backfield.

TRUTH, but that doesn’t mean we don’t protect our QB.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I mean two years in a row now, as we were coming down the stretch, opposing Defenses were clogging receiver lanes with our gimpy ‘Reek and Da Penguin.

THAT’S why it’s so important to protect the QB… so he can make those third and fourth level reads.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Not to mention… TO PROTECT TUA!

SHOUT OUT to MF13–Mr. Spikes I totally agree with your comments on the need to protect Tua by drafting the best available O-Lineman with one of our two early picks. What’s left of our offensive line can’t possibly protect Tua for a 17-game regular season.

Two years ago Tua threw 4 touchdown passes against the Ravens IN THE 4TH quarter of a game in Baltimore. Then he followed that win with a victory over the Buffalo Bills in Miami Gardens!! Give Tua at least a chance playing behind a decent O-Line and he WILL PRODUCE VICTORIES against good teams.

Conversely, put Tua behind a mediocre O-Line if you want our team to fail. And, so far, upper management of the Dolphins has chosen the latter strategy.

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Now other outlets are picking up on one guy’s report of Tua to the Vikings. I’m seeing it everywhere now. Can Tua ever have an offseason without nonsense surrounding him?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If they don’t give him a huge contract this season, and he either plays lights out, or plays poorly, then next season will be the first. lol

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah Tim, it’s stupid talk. If they were going to do that, it would have already happened so they could have replaced him with a vet FA like Mayfield.

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The thing that is so ridiculous with these reports about Tua is Grier and McDaniel have said he’s a part of their future regardless of what fans and pundits have to say. It’s a waste of time.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hear any stupid stories about Brock Purdy, Patrick Mahomes, CJ Stroud? Listen, anyone can get traded at any time. Tua gets more shit than he deserves, but his record against winning teams leaves a lot of people wondering about him, Dolphins fans and fans of other teams, and a lot of commentators who cover our team, and others as well. He’s the only one that can shut these people up. Hopefully he does that this season.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This has been going on since he was drafted for no fucking reason. He just lead the league in passing yards and ranked high in many other categories. Our entire team struggled against top teams. We got beat in all phases but everyone points to Tua. It’s ridiculous.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not ridiculous Tim. A lot of people are skeptical about him, including me. He’s in his 5th season, he’s not a 2nd year or 3rd year QB. I actually find it ridiculous that fans can’t see how real his struggles are when he plays good teams. He’s now with the HC that loves him, and together, they have produced a 5-12 record against winning teams. Brock Purdy hit the field immediately and just started winning, no looking back. You watched the games, and still you blame the O-line, receivers, defense and more. You can go through each and every game of those 12 losses and find Tua simply didn’t play well. It’s almost impossible NOT to see it. There’s no game in those 12 losses where Tua threw for 3 TD’s but the defense didn’t hold. There’s no game where he he threw 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. They’re all either 1 TD, or 1 TD and 1 INT, or 0 TD’s and 1 or 2 INT’s. It can’t ever be ALL on Tua, but the fact his play is so significantly different against winning teams than it is against losing teams is alarming. I’ve put up the numbers, the numbers, and the record don’t lie. If we were in a more competitive division it would be worse. We got lucky the Patriots are in decline since Brady left, the Jets have been unlucky, and the Bills who have slid made up a 3 game deficit against us with 5 games to go. Don’t even say it, because I know injuries are what’s going to come out of your mouth. It’s an excuse is ALL it is. The finale against Buffalo, 1 TD, 2 INT’s. That ain’t got nothing to do with the defense, 1 TD was ST’s, and the other 2 were Josh Allen. 1 passing, one rushing.

  62. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Well said Mike E

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There are the usual suspects who tend to rail against Tua, like Mike Florio, Chris Simms, and I’m sure a few others who have consistently hounded Tua. When a guy like Jeff Darlington, who is as even keel and unbiased as any commentator out there, comes on the radio, and when asked if he would give Tua a big contract now, in the $45-50M range per year, and he says we should play him on his 5th year contract, that resonates with me. I didn’t necessarily need that as conviction of how I felt, but it’s not wrong or unrealistic to feel this way. We pounded the shit out of some lesser teams, but the QB was a different guy each and every time we played a winning team. If you want to blame the HC, I suppose you can go there, because I think MM protects Tua at all costs. Seems to me though that MM isn’t going anywhere, and if Tua doesn’t get that huge contract before the season, and he’s still struggling against winning teams, you know who is going.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I’ve said many times Tua has had sub par performances but so have others in those games dropping passes and fumbling. He didn’t allow 48 to the Bills and 50+ to the Ravens. He also didn’t allow big plays on STs. In big games against good teams other players have to make big plays too and they didn’t. This past season down the stretch we were playing with backups all over the place. Did that not happen or am imagining it?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh by the way we don’t even sniff the playoffs without Tua.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Again, the important thing to look at. Buffalo we lost at home 21-14. So the best our QB can do is 1 TD, 2 INT’s. The defense was in a shambles. We had 108 yards rushing and 1 rushing TD. At home, in our house, the best our QB could give us was one TD. If that works for you, let’s give him $50M per season now. It doesn’t work for me, and that’s just one big game. The Chiefs game early in the season, we had 118 yards rushing and 1 rushing TD. Again, our QB can only muster 1 TD. We had Tyreek Hill, and Waddle. So what you’re basically telling me Tim is that everything must be perfect for us to beat those teams. There’s no margin for error. We can only give up 14 points or less, otherwise how can you expect Tua to win. That’s ridiculous.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Another thing is Tua is entering his 5th season it hasn’t happened yet. Two years with McDaniel in his system and would you agree that under Flores his first two seasons it wasn’t a great situation? He did get banged up as well. He got off to a rough start early on no doubt.

As for signing him to an extension or letting him play on the 5th year of his rookie contract, I’ve said I don’t care either way. Just going by what the team has said about that. Even Jeff Darlington’s opinion doesn’t matter.

  66. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Tua doesn’t make plays. He runs them efficiently when they are there. That’s it. You need more than that in this QB driven league.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

When the pressure was on, how many out there had any confidence in him? I sure didn’t and that is not something I decided on a whim. I have seen it time and time again to know how it’s going to go

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s totally not true. I think you have to go back and rewatch a lot of games.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I watched them all. Nothing watching him gives me any hope in a big game

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was replying to you saying he doesn’t make big plays. That’s not true. A lot of his throws were fantastic and on some other plays he did escape the pocket for big passing plays.

Oh by the way we don’t even sniff the playoffs without Tua.

    ************************************

I can’t argue that, Mike White and Skylar Thompson aren’t starting caliber QB’s, although I couldn’t say for sure that Mike White with a couple of games starting near the end of the season could do worse than Tua against Buffalo and KC. We’ll never know.

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We make fun of Josh Allen here all the time. His stats look like shit against Tua’s. This just shows you how much nice looking stats mean sometimes. That MFer (Allen) is relentless. He puts the team on his back and his body on the line, throws INT’s, fumbles but if he gets the ball at the end of the game, he’s gonna win that game for you.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s also the size of a DE. Tua can’t do what he does physically, not many QBs can. Tua is a rhythm passer who relies on timing and accuracy. He’s better than Allen at that. Even Mahomes isn’t a good rhythm passer, he’s an improv guy who has a magical way about him. Nobody is Mahomes.

Just because Tua isn’t the best doesn’t mean he’s a questionable starter. That is what I find ridiculous. Yet the Vikings might want him. 🤣

  69. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I brought up Darlington because you were saying how you hate the shit Tua gets every offseason. I was just bringing up a sane mind who’s very familiar with the Dolphins who doesn’t believe in Tua. His opinion is not important though. Listen, I would love nothing more than Tua to never need anyone’s defense again, and for him to play lights out and take us to a championship. You can give me all the shit you want, and I’ll gladly take it, because I just want to win!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When it comes to him getting a contract his opinion doesn’t matter. I like Jeff, I think he’s one of the best reporters in the NFL.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know that, but again, was referring to Tua getting flack in the offseason from so many people and how ridiculous it is. Just giving an example of a guy who is levelheaded doing the same thing. Nothing else.

  70. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

To your point Mike E. There’s a reason you hear rumblings of Tua trades. Sure people make up some stuff but there has to be some material there to start with.

Just like we heard all last year the team only has a good record because they haven’t played good teams. We all got pissed and turns out they were right!

  71. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Long post but worth the read and your opinion.

Everyone knows and agrees we NEED to bolster our OL and DL, not just for this season but for the future.

THAT SAID, and it will cause quite a few to flip out (not just Randy, lol) if it happens. BUT, don’t be surprised if our pick in the first after a trade down or even at #21 is a WR. This draft is deep at WR.

My reasoning. Waddle is still a FA next year. The Dolphins can give him an extension now or have up until 2 May to exercise a 5th year option on him. They have not done it yet (same with Phillips). They could lose Waddle like they lost Wilkins and Hunt if they don’t. Then they also have to resign Holland. The “market value” for Waddle is projected to be around 25-27 million in 2025 based on his current NFL ranking.

The 5th year option money on Waddle is projected at around 15.5 million for 2025. A 5th year option on Phillips is projected around 13.2 million.

The bigger reason I feel this COULD happen is Tyreek Hill’s cap hit in 2025 will be 34.2 million. Right now, our 2025 cap is down to 19.3 million. It will go up to about 27 million when the release of X is official. This does count the projected 5th year options on Waddle and Phillips though the 27 million in cap only accounts for 31 players under contract in 2025 and does not count the future contracts of Tua or Holland.

Tyreek is consistently having off the field issues. Is the next one going to come back and bite us with a suspension?

THE KICKER IS, all the players Grier restructured contracts on, and we are talking a lot of players, even down to players who were only on 3-4 million dollar contracts, Tyreek Hill’s contract (the biggest contact on the roster) was NOT touched.

We have a 2025 out clause in Tyreek’s contract where we can recoup significant cap on Hill in 2025. A 2025 pre 6/1 release or trade of Hill will clear 11.6 million in cap in 2025 or a post 6/1 release or trade of Hill will clear 22.9 million in cap in 2025.

A contender may be willing to trade for Tyreek at a cost of only 21.8 million in 2025.

Think about it. Why would the biggest contract we have not get reworked to clear cap but they “kick the can” down the road on little contracts like Smythe and others creating future dead cap to clear a measly 1 million(ish) per.

They have tried in FA to fill as many gaps in the roster to go BPA at #21.

Don’t be surprised after a little trade down or at #21 hearing the name Xavier Worthy called when the Dolphins pick on day 1. I think OBJ is a fallback plan incase MM doesn’t get his guy in the draft. I can’t help but see the “kid in the candy store” look on MM’s face when he was shaking Worthy’s hand at the Texas pro day.

Another possibility would be hearing Michigan’s WR Roman Wilson’s name called at #55 on day 2.

My bet, if this were to happen, would be on Worthy. MM will want someone just as fast (or faster) with a great skill set to replace what Hill brings.

    Anyway, just a thought.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s certainly possible. I think it would be a huge mistake because our O-line and D-line have more needs for this upcoming season. I do get your reasoning though.

  72. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – The Viking story is hilarious. Clearly, Brian Flores and Tua could not be on the same team. lol

  73. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, even Tua would say he has to play better in big games even if it’s not all on him. That’s how competitors think. When you don’t get to where you want it’s a failure. Try again next year.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I believe Tua knows what he needs to do. We will see if he can fit in some big boy pants. Doesn’t matter if he plays on the option or extension. He is our QB.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Exactly! We’re built to win now, no other way around that. You don’t trade for Hill, Chubb and Ramsey to fuck around for a few years.

  74. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tim, what’s your take on my novel above. lol

  75. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

BBM, Tyreek’s deal wasn’t touched because it already has a 56M cap hit in 2026 and he is a FA in 2027.

He has a 31M cap hit this year, 34M next year and 56 the following year. It would be insane to push any more money forward. He is already untradable without the Dolphins eating a substantial amount of the future salary along with the already allotted cap hit (paid bonuses)

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

22M of his 25 salary would be dead cap if traded, 11 of his 26 salary. So like 36m would stick to our cap if he was traded. But his base salary in 26 is also 43M so the new team would have to pay him that for ONE YEAR. What would YOU give up for a 32 YO “Best ever” WR?

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBMike – I was just reading twitter, and a Dolphins fan brought up DE Darius Robinson to play opposite Phillips. He seems like he’d be more suited to play 3-4 END rather than 3-4 OLB. Your thoughts?

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

BBMike, your novel is an unknown to me. I really have no idea. I always focus on now because of how we’re built.

  78. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

“BBM, Tyreek’s deal wasn’t touched because it already has a 56M cap hit in 2026 and he is a FA in 2027.”

    —————–

So, they did it with Chubb, Armstead and a bunch of others. Chubb now comes at a cost of nearly 30 mil per year plus dead money AFTER he becomes a FA. They could have done the same on Tyreek pushing more dead money to 2027 and 2028 not even affecting his 2026 cap hit. They did it with 8-9 other players we are now paying dead money on AFTER they become FA.

They could have easily done it with Tyreek, BUT they didn’t.

    ==============

“22M of his 25 salary would be dead cap if traded, 11 of his 26 salary. So like 36m would stick to our cap if he was traded. But his base salary in 26 is also 43M so the new team would have to pay him that for ONE YEAR.”

    ————————

After 2024, Tyreek’s Guaranteed money left is 22.6 million period. A pre 6/1 release/trade will result in a 22.6 million dead cap in 2025 but clear 11.6 million in cap space.

A post 6/1 release/trade would clear 22.9 mil in cap in 2025 and clear 43.9 mil in cap in 2026. The 22.6 would be split between 2025 and 2026 at 11.3 million dead cap each year. A total dead cap hit of 22.6 NOT 36 mil.

Tyreek is very tradable. NONE of Tyreek’s base salary is guaranteed. A contender could trade for Tyreek and have him at a bargain cost of 21.8 million in 2025 then cut him after the 2025 season and not have to pay one cent of his 43.9 mil salary in 2026.

Everyone knows, including Tyreek, he’s not or ever was going to get a penny of that 43.9 million base salary in 2026 even if he stays a Dolphin in 2025. He will be released by the dolphins in that case with a dead cap hit of 11.3 million and 43.9 million in savings.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Purdy is a system QB. He just so happened to be in the right place at the right time and fits right into the Shanahan system. He’s more

After seeing Devonta Smith and one other slender build WR (name escapes me) do real well, I’m not worried about it. Everyone gets injured at one point.

    ————-

I hear ya, and that’s why I brought Smith’s name up. But still… if I were a GM, I’d have a difficult time pulling the trigger on a guy so slight of build, but that’s just me and my $.02.

Again, if we draft Xavier, I’ll be PUMPED!

Y’all are so afraid of our past failures at QB you’re willing to settle for a chance at the playoffs and a first round exit.

Wait, so Tua isn’t a system QB, in the right system with the right Head Coach Mike McDaniel???

    ———-

Tua went to Alabama in the BIG BOY SEC. He thrived there and set records. Same can’t be said about Brock Purdy and his little Iowa State college.

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – fact is, they’re both system QB’s in the NFL, but Purdy is better in his system than Tua is in his. Tell me what team could Tua go to and be better than he is here in Miami?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Here’s my take, and I’ll try to make it short and sweet. Last time Tua played for Alabama, he damn near lost his football career with the ‘Bo Jackson hip injury’. Yes, he also had a previous history of injury at Alabama, but nothing like the hip injury he sustained.

He needed to be physically rehabilitated to the ‘nth’ degree. Then we drafted him, and immediately there were reports that management forced Tua onto our favorite HC of all time, Brian “The Fuck” Flores… whom Minkah “FF” Fitzpatrick wisely got away from early.

Tua’s first two years under Flores was a mental beatdown and it killed him. Coach McDaniel finally came to Tua’s rescue in order to resurrect the player he once was at Alabama.

In those 2 seasons, Tua led the NFL in passer rating (’22) and passing yardage (’23).

I’m very good if one wants to call McDaniel’s system QB-friendly (as is Shanahan’s for Purdy), but Tua NEEDED somebody to come to his rescue after all the BS he’s gone through… and the bloody headlines from the MSM are always heckling him, to boot.

Now fix the O-Line, and watch Tua fly to heights unknown. Call it… “How Tua Got His Groove Back”.

  89. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

MSM headlines that Tua’s proven WRONG…

    — Can’t stay healthy for a season

    — Can’t throw a deep ball (LOL!!!)

    — Can’t move in the pocket (alright, last year he looked less mobile after bulking up, but cat had ALWAYS been able to move in the pocket… he has to due to his height)

    — He’s too short (LOL!!!)

    — Can’t get rid of the ball quickly enough (LOL!!!)

    — Can’t read the field (SMH)

    — Needs to have a receiver wide open (speed at Alabama) in order to complete the pass

    — Can’t take a hit (THAT changed last season!)

And so on and so forth. Guys… Tua is an incredibly gifted QB. Let’s see what more he conquers in ’24 before thinking there’s no more growth for him. His injuries are now behind him, his confidence (once shaken by Brian Flores) is now brimming, and he’s improved each and every season.

  90. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – Purdy has been better than Tua from Day 1 in that system. Your plan is give Tua an all-pro at every position on the O-line and then maybe after 3 seasons in the same system and same HC he can finally win a big game?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Perhaps it’s a matter of jitters in big games sits. All I can tell ya is the more experience one gains in those sits (in any walk of life, honestly), the less the jitters and the more the confidence.

Confidence plays a HUGE part in that. And as the legendary Jack Palance used to say… “confidence is VERY sexy… don’t ya think?” 🙂

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Speaking of Jack Palance, I did three 1-armed push-ups the other day for my nephew… he was impressed!

Equally impressionable? The look on my face when I thought I blew out my rotator cuff!

Trust me need to stop trying to impress the younguns …

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – Tua hasn’t proved he can take a hit, he barely got touched last season. Part of the reason I say he played in bubble wrap. He threw within 2.5 seconds even if no one was open to avoid keeping the play alive and risk getting hit. Every scramble he went down before contact. I understand why, we all do, but it’s not necessarily conducive to winning the game, just keeps you alive to live another day. Brock Purdy doesn’t play that way.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

My guy, there is a reel out there of all the hits Tua took last season and how he used his jujitsu training to avoid slamming his head into the turf.

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t want to spend the night ripping Tua, but him playing like shit against Buffalo for the division and 2 seed and the same in the WC game against the Chiefs isn’t going to make him more confident. I think he needs to get back to the way he played in ’22 and don’t worry so much about getting hurt, and worry about winning.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I quite honestly believe we’re going to see that out of Tua this season, man. And THAT is what confidence achieves.

HOWEVER, if our O-Line can’t protect him this season, expect more of the same as last year… 2.2 seconds and throw it to either ‘Reek or Da Penguin.

  93. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

SF has a better supporting, total team, for Purdy so he’s been able to take them further, everytime they lose a big game it’s apparent to me the issue is Purdy as he also doesn’t put his team on his back

  94. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

I want to quickly take your pulse, Bro. O-Line or D-Line in the 1st round? There is NO wrong answer, of course.

  95. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Put Tua on SF and believe they would’ve won last year in SB

Put Purdy on the Fins and we don’t make the playoffs
