Dolphins must build team for this year, and beyond . . .

There are opinions all over the place as to what the Dolphins need to accomplish in the 2024 NFL Draft. There are some that are hyper focused on improving the team for the 2024 season, and basically at the cost of the future of the team. Just win this year! While I understand there is an artificial timetable in place, some due to salary cap issues, others due to how long WR Tyreek Hill will be in a Dolphins uniform, and of course the elephant in the room, the looming contract extension for QB Tua Tagaovailoa which could potentially free up some cap space this season, yet hamper us in the future. Looking at the current roster, it’s easy for this author to see the gaping hole left by RDE Christian Wilkins, and also the potential holes on the OL, despite LT Terron Armstead not retiring, the signing of OC Aaron Brewer from the Titans, and swing OT Jack Driscoll, and the one year deal for OG Isaiah Wynn. As to which is line is more desperate for help, the O-line or the D-line, that depends on your viewpoint.

To make the case for the O-line is easy. LT Terron Armstead has played more than 10 games 5 times in his 11 year career, and has never played an entire season. He almost retired, I could imagine there was some begging done by GM Chris Grier and HC Mike McDaniel, so Armstead remains an active NFL player. In 5 years, Isaiah Wynn has gone over 10 games once, and has also never played an entire season. He was the starting RT in 2022 for the Patriots and managed just 9 games. Last season with the Dolphins, Wynn played in 7 games before being out for the season. OC Aaron Brewer actually started every game for the last seasons for the Tennessee Titans. Durability is not his issue, it’s pass blocking. He’s not the worst rated OC, he’s just been less than average. RG Robert Jones played well in a backup role for the Dolphins over 3 seasons and he has been a starter for 13 games in 3 seasons. RT Austin Jackson missed one game last season, and his play has been the best in his 4 year career as a Dolphins player. We also have a few guys capable of stepping in for spot start duty such as the aforementioned swing tackle Jack Driscoll, swing tackle Kion Smith, OG/C Liam Eichenberg who played both last season, and OG Lester Cotton. Depth is not the issue, quality along the interior line is questionable and every interior OL is a decent injury risk. Another issue is you have to bank on this being Terron Armstead’s farewell season.

For the D-line, in my eyes, the case is even easier. We brought in a bunch of players for the D-line to join incumbent LDE Zach Sieler. The problem is, with the exception of NT Benito Jones (6’1 335), who may possibly be an upgrade over NT Raekwon Davis, Da’Shawn Hand is not an adequate replacement for RDE Christian Wilkins. It’s funny how departed players get completely under appreciated now that they’re gone. Christian Wilkins who played every single game and over 80% of the snaps and had the most tackles in the history of the NFL for a DT in his first 5 seasons. “He made no impact, no pro bowls!” they scream. I’m going to be shocked if a D-lineman isn’t our first pick at #21. It could be Byron Murphy II, or “Johnny” Newton, or possibly even T’Vondre Sweat, although he currently projects more as a NT.

How the draft actually plays out though could definitely impact which direction we go. In other words if a bunch of interior O-lineman come off the board before we pick at #21, or we trade back, and there’s only one IOL we have an early grade on, we may draft the IOL. On the other hand, the same could happen at DT. We may like only one or 2 guys early and if the other is gone, we may want to pull the trigger to get the one we want, full well knowing he won’t make it to #55. Despite priority, sometimes you have to get the best player at a position of need, and both lines are very needy!

Now, back to your favorite topic. Look away Tua defenders, if you must! All I want is to have a winning team, and by winning, let me reiterate by saying to me, winning is a team that can compete in the post season, in big games at the end of the season, especially those games that decide whether we play at home or travel to another stadium where the weather will negatively affect the entire team. I’m a Dolphins fan through and through, and a football fan for who follows the game pretty closely. I fully understand it’s a team effort to win a game, but when your QB, the most player on the roster can’t elevate his team, and more importantly elevate his own play to help the team, then you’re not going to be a winning team. I’m not putting up stats, because certain people, and you know who you are just ignore them anyway. QB Brock Purdy isn’t a particularly athletic QB. He had 144 yards rushing during the 2023 season for the Niners. In the playoff game against the Detroit Lions, Brock Purdy did what he had to do. He rushed for a super important 48 yards on 5 carries. The first big run was a 21 yard scramble to the Lions 4 yard line with the Niners trailing 24-17. That set up the game tying TD late in the 3rd QTR. The next big play was another scramble by Purdy in the 4th QTR with the Niners leading 27-24, from the DET 49 yard line, a 21 yard run to the DET 28 yard line. That set up yet another TD for the Niners as they held on for a 34-31 victory. The Niner defense wasn’t great, you can’t always count on that, but Purdy made some huge plays to help his team win. If we gave up 31 points and lost 31-14, you guys would finger point at the defense, despite the QB and the offense only scoring 14 points.

So that’s pretty much it in a nutshell. You need the QB to do more in big games, if you want to win in the NFL. In the last 2 seasons, that has not been the case. 2 seasons ago Tua was injured and couldn’t get us a win in games 12 through 15, so four games with the season on the line, in which we scored 18.10, 17 and 16 points against the Niners, Chargers, Bills and Packers. Then of course his season was over and that left 1st year QB, 7th RD pick, Skylar Thompson to battle the Patriots and the Jets, and then ultimately, the Bills in a wild playoff loss. This past season, with 5 games to go and a 3 game lead in the division. Against the Titans, zero TD’s, zero INT’s. We lose in a heartbreaker 28-27. We play the hapless Jets and we dispense with them easily 30-0. Then we eke out a 22-20 win against the visiting Cowboys, the NFL version of the Miami Dolphins, who can’t beat winning teams either (It’s a narrative!) Then the wheels come off against the mighty Ravens, who by the way, managed to keep their star DT and paid him! We manage to allow the Ravens 56 points, while only scoring 19 ourselves. Then the coup de grace, the season finale against our division rival Buffalo Bills. Our QB can only manage 1 TD and 2 INT’s, and while the Bills QB wasn’t much better, he had 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s and 1 fumble, but that guy is relentless! He had 15 rushes for 67 and carried and ran over Dolphins defenders all game and helped them win.

In summation, some people here scoff at Josh Allen because he’s not an accurate passer. He’s not. He can probably throw it 70-80 yards, but who knows where it’s going to land. On the other hand, he’s a winner! He’ll do whatever it takes to win, put his body on the line, damn the future, damn his life, he’s going to get it done. Yes, I understand he’s as big or bigger than a LB, so what? He may not always be pretty, but he will take the hits, and he will deliver the hits, and he will help his team win games. I love his spirit, I wish our QB had the same indomitable spirit. I wish he could help us win some big games, not in Week 3, but in Week 15, 16, 17 and 18 and then if we qualify, in the post season. If Tua isn’t the guy that can deliver that, then it’s time to move on and find the QB that can, and you keep trying until you find him, even if it takes another 20 years!

Well, so far I’ve seen Tua signed a huge deal and I’ve seen we’re going back to the throwbacks permanently.

never seen a draft like this one as far as OT goes

it looks like it goes about 14 deep at OT

I also like the 2nd round prospects as far as DL go: Jenkins, Fiske & Ruke Orhorhoro would all be great pieces to help us replace Wilkins

I really hope we can swing a trade down and pick up another 2nd

I think we can get 3 quality players up front on OL & DL if we do that

Miami Dolphins cornerback Kader Kohou received a $878,167 bonus for his play in 2023 via the performance-based pay program, the NFL announced Monday. Kohou’s bonus is the fifth largest of any player in the league.

The performance-based pay program seeks to provide bonuses to players who receive a high percentage of play time, despite being on low paying contracts.

Kohou, 25, played the 2023 season on the second year of a three-year, $2.59 million contract that he signed as an undrafted free agent in 2022. After playing 938 defensive snaps (85 percent of the Dolphins’ total defensive snaps) and 43 special teams snaps (9 percent) in 2023, Kohou earned a significant bonus.

Last year, Kohou received a $705,584 bonus from the program, the highest total for any Dolphins player and 14th most in the NFL.

Kohou has appeared in 32 career games with 29 starts and has recorded one interception, one sack, one forced fumble, 10 tackles for loss, and 20 passes defended. He’s due to become a restricted free agent after the 2024 season.

Good for him! (I wonder how this works under the Salary Cap?)

Okay, I made a post a while back about drafting WR Xavier Worthy with his 4.21 speed.

I just came across a blogger (or something) who is a diehard Dolphins fan. His brother met former Bills CB White when White was on vacation in Orlando. He asked him how tough was the Dolphins offense. White said not very tough unless they got Hill, Waddle and Achane on the field at the same time. When one of them was missing or playing hurt, it wasn’t hard to game plan against. He went on to say that all that motion doesn’t bother them and actually thinks it helped their D come the 4th quarter because Hill and Waddle were worn down and they were never concerned about who was the 3rd WR or our TE’s.

The blogger went on to say that we should draft WR Worthy to fill that void at WR3. His reasoning was we are in win now mode. With the loss of Wilkins, AVG, safeties Elliott/Jones and possible lack of pass rush, the Dolphins are going to have to outscore teams to win. Duh! I know what he meant though. The Dolphins won’t be winning games with defense. Not with a new defense and a bunch of new players on defense trying to gel during the season. We will need to be able to put up a lot of points vs teams especially the top teams because we are not going to stop them from scoring.

He said we should draft Worthy then the best OL at #55 and then draft a safety and DL on day 3.

He said he wish he could ask White what the Bills would do with Hill, Waddle, Worthy, Jannu Smith and Achane on the field at the same time.

    WHAT IF…

What if Connor Williams looks good to go for game 1 of the regular season (or even shortly after). Should we re-sign him with the $$$ we get back after June 1st (Xavien Howard cut)?

Quite honestly, he can’t demand the $$$ he once wanted after sustaining his injury. I would think he’s only going to get half of what he had coveted, if even that.

We might be able to bring our whole O-Line back (minus Robert Hunt, of course) from last season. Question would be the durability.

Remember… before all of the injuries, we had one of the greater O-Lines in the NFL last season.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      TO BE SURE(!!!)…

If we don’t address the O-Line by the 2nd round in this year’s Draft, somebody is being reckless… especially knowing that T-Stead is likely to retire after this season.

  40. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:
  41. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I just can’t see us taking an EDGE @ R1P21. Why? At some point (hopefully sooner than later), we’re gong to have both Phillips and Chubb back… plus we’ve already signed Shaq Barrett. Maybe move Channing Tindall to EDGE (as somebody here had suggested), right?

What’s more, there are still other EDGEs we could sign to get by before the return of Phillips and Chubb. Do we really want to tie up so much $$$ in the (EDGE) LB room? Of course not… when we have bigger fish to catch.

The game is won and lost in the trenches.

Other than some mishap snaps Conner Williams was really good for us.

  43. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I can see it, as plain as day…

And we’re going to select that ONE guy that nobody had on their ‘bingo card’! 😆

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, Edge is one of the most important positions. Phillips and Chubb both coming off of season ending injuries – Phillips entering his 4th season and/or 5th year option and Chubb a couple more years off a big contract. I can totally see that being a possibility.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

absolutely. Phillips has not been able to stay healthy, and it would actually be a smart move to pick up someone at 21, hope he develops next year, and then let Phillips walk. You can’t keep paying guys big money (see Wilkins and Hunt). You have to draft and develop guys as well.

  45. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

  46. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Signing Lamm is great.

Means we only need a bona fide starter at RG.

which makes Barton or a 3-4 DT/DE likely in round 1.

Barton would play RG till Terron retires then kick out to LT …

or stay inside if that’s a perfect fit.

Seems like DT is deep enough this draft to get a good one in the 2nd.

so we should exploit that IMO

don’t know if we trade down or not but if we ended up with 4 picks in the first 3 rounds instead of 2 picks in the first 2, I would seriously consider 2 OL with this picks

there are gifted versatile players like Barton, Beebe and Fautanu, raw projects that can be elite like Guyton and Fashanu and then a couple of small school/non powerhouse school guys like agegadje (Yale) and Patrick Paul (Houston)

it’s not a fantastic class for plug and play – but it’s a great class to develop players on the OL. Dolfans don’t like to be patient with the Jackson and Eichenbergs of the world. But it does pay off

It’s their current QB that kicks our ass on a regular basis

That current QB has now lost his #1 WR and #2 WR this offseason, Diggs and Gabe Davis. Let’s see how much weight he can carry.

  57. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Diggs was invisible 2nd half of the season

  58. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Guys Stefan Diggs had 107 catches for over 1100 yards and 8 TDs last season

that’s his worst season in Buffalo

he actually had close to 450 catches and 40 tds to go along with over 5300 yards on 4 years in Buffalo

those are cream of the crop numbers

they can’t function as an offense without him

at best they are going to try to replace him next year with a rookie, and the top rookies in this draft are going top 15 so they are out of range

if Chris Greir did what the Bills just did Dofans would be crucifying him

this is a huge swing and miss by Buffalo

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

and to the extent he was a cancer – we all new he didn’t want to be in Buffalo and the end of the 2022 season

they kept him for another year knowing this and knowing their window to get the Super Bowl is closing

if he was bad in the lockerroom and was disruptive to the team, why risk a season when you can make a run for the Super Bowl? he didn’t just get bad in terms of team relationships this offseians, he was bad last offseason but they rode with him

and now they vote lesser value for him

and they are taking a huge cap hit

Just to throw some stats out; Allen had 20 passing TDs the year before Diggs, had 35+ the first 3 years with Diggs. Diggs has caught over 25% of all Allen TDs the last 3 years. Diggs has over 5400 of Allen’s 17800 yards the past 4 years. Allen’s completion % went up an average of 8% with Diggs on the field. Diggs speed and ability was a huge reason the Bills were a SB contender the past 4 years.

Allen was an average NFL starter last year when he wasn’t running the ball. He’s already started to regress back to old Allen even with Diggs last year. If you keep him from running, Allen is just a somewhat inaccurate dude with a monster arm.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

This is exactly what I’m saying

WRs with his speed and skill set are not that common in the nfl

      he’s huge on the Bills

Allen has never been a guy with accuracy mid or short range

but he’s got a cannon of an arm and his athleticism allows him to make something out of nothing – they need the Diggs type of WR

he was the piece that took Allen to the next level

they haven’t replaced him yet and he’s not easy to replace

I’m morning in Xavier Worthy as the Bills picks

without Gabe Davis or Diggs – how else are they going to stretch the field

the Bills have had a horrible offseains

they still have the draft but they lost a lot of talent this offseason

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Completely agree Piggy. I honestly thought Diggs was made for a guy like Allen and while Diggs will find success anywhere, it’s a big loss for both sides. Much bigger for the Bills since he’s hard to replace as you mentioned.

  65. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Diggs was known as a malcontent in MN too. This didn’t come out of nowhere. Yes, Diggs is really good, but he’s not a team player. Ultimately he’s a selfish player. Buffalo thought they could put up with it and keep him happy to win a SB, but they couldn’t get it done. I’m not surprised at all that they moved on from him. Really good player who poisons your team. No thanks.

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Good GM work by the Texans.

The Texans traded pick #23 and #232 to the Vikings to move down 19 spots and pick at #42. They also got 2024 pick #188 and a 2025 second round pick from the Vikings.

The Texans then used the 2025 2nd round pick from Vikings to trade for Diggs and gained an extra 6th (pick #189) and a 2025 5th.

So, in the 2 trades, the Texans traded 2024 picks #23 and #232 and a 2025 2nd round pick and got:

    WR Diggs, 2024 Picks #42, #188, #189 and a 2025 5th.

absolutely. Phillips has not been able to stay healthy, and it would actually be a smart move to pick up someone at 21, hope he develops next year, and then let Phillips walk. You can’t keep paying guys big money (see Wilkins and Hunt). You have to draft and develop guys as well.

    ———-

I think this is very insightful! You aren’t wrong, my guy… not in the least.

The only thing I’d ask would be this: could a rookie EDGE help us win NOW? Perhaps… and I haven’t the answer.

I mean, if we’re ALL-IN again (yes, we are), we’d better draft players who can contribute immediately… not experiments.

Your point is VERY well taken, Brian!

Wow Diggs trade big news. Sportrac showing 45M in dead cap for the Bills this year. They only show 19M in “Cap hit” but 45M as “Dead Cap” is that because they can split it with next year because it is post June 1?

They were in worse cap situation than us before converting salary to bonus with Allen and a few others. Now they are taking another at least 19M in cap hit

Ok, they show the cap hit as 31 M on the bills home page, LOL Get it together Sportac

  74. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s funny. I’m like in a different dimension than so many of you guys are right now. I actually think the Bills will be just fine. They’ll draft a WR, it’s easy to find a good WR, who knows, maybe they end up with Xavier Worthy. As long as Josh Allen is their QB, I feel like we have a tough time beating them. I’m still very worried about our team. I hope they take care of the defense, either a DT/DE to fill the gaping hole left by Wilkins, or an OLB/pass rusher. We have no legit quality on that D-line except Sieler. That’s not going to cut it.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think the Bills will be fine without him as well. They are revamping their offense with Kincaid as the main weapon in the passing game. That had been developing all season long

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We definitely have questions on the DL but I don’t think it’s as dire a situation as you do. Wilkins is a very good player but it’s not like we’re going to fall apart because of his departure.

  75. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MIKE E.; I am even more negative than you are regarding the Dolphins’ future. Years of not taking care of our offensive line have left it in a shambles. Too many of them can not, and will not, play more than 8-12 games, if that, based on their histories. And our #1 O-Lineman is likely in his final season. A year ago Miami failed to draft a single O-Lineman. And they paid for it down the home stretch of the season when they lost 2 key late season games before falling apart in a lopsided playoff blow-out loss.

Throw-in our lost players on the defense and WE ARE IN A REAL MESS!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We did bring back Wynn who was a starter and Lamm who played a fair amount of time replacing Armstead. They brought in the C Aaron Brewer so not sure we’ll be using our 1st pick on the O-line. Personally, I think the D-line is in need of that pick

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – not fall apart, but our defense will struggle unless they find a reasonable replacement for Wilkins.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The Draft is deep at that position.
      Grier knew this.
Better to get a new star at rookie money
than grossly overpay for the same production numbers.

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Bills lost their great DE, 2 starting safeties, 2 starting CBs, 2 starting DTs, 2 starting WRs, their starting C AND starting MLB, their PR (who killed us), and their Big Hammer RB.

plus they are stuck with$30M+ dead money.

  78. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Wilkins averaged 4 sacks a year and 71 tackles.

    That production can be replaced,

especially since he played hugenumbers of snaps,

so all those tackles don’t need to come from one guy.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, by our safety or CB in the end zone. As deep as the draft is at DT, if we don’t get an impact player, Sieler won’t be as effective and our defense will suffer

  79. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike E

I feel like you have a different much higher standard when you judge the Dolphins than you do the rest of the league

the bills lost their top 2 receivers and most of their secondary this off-season

their cap situation is worse than ours before and after

but they will be just fine?

we are all freaking out about replacing Wilkins

What’s it like to have to replace your 1 and 2 receivers and your entire secondary

they are just like us – trying to get to the next level and win a championship

but their arrow is pointing down

they’ve were worse last seasons than the year before, and worse that season than the season before

we have been getting better both of the last 2 years

Josh Allen doesn’t make everything fine. In fact Josh Allen being Superman every week and leading the league in turnovers is probably what’s been killing them

they were the most talented team in the nfl a few years ago

    – and now that’s gone

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We drafted Jaylen Waddle and the offense was working fine. He had a great rookie season. They still have Josh Allen. He doesn’t need everything to be perfect, he can take over a game by himself. The Bills will get a couple of WR’s. I also don’t care about other team’s, but I do care about ours. The zjets really improved, we won’t have 2 easy wins this season. I don’t want to go backwards, but I think that’s where we’re heading

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

no one thought we had 2 easy wins against the jets last year either

waddle was the lone bight spot of our offense in his rookie year. our offense was horrible that year

He also broke the rookie record for receptions – so that performance was an anomaly. No one should expect that from their rookies

also bc of the dead money they now have with diggs – they can only utilize the draft to replace him. They can’t sign a free agent WR for a couple of years

if you are comparing our offense – we didn’t just draft waddle and get to the next level. We were really a good offense until 2022, after we traded for Hill too

I don’t think the bills will be fine just bc they have Josh Allen. as New Age mentioned – josh allen really didn’t excel in this league until the bills brought in diggs

and now they have to find the next diggs in the draft. And that’s easier said than done

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

        Marino never won a Superbowl…

  80. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

also I don’t think there is a c]vision with the Bills offense

they aren’t really retooling to be a different offense

they fired their OC in November of last year

they promoted an interim OC within (Joe Brady) and then hired him this off-season full time as their OC

these moves aren’t a new vision for the offense. They just really don’t have a choice

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tiki Barber mentioned that down the stretch after the Bills fired their OC they were running more and that may continue moving forward.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

You don’t have to let your receivers go to run more

you just have to focus on the run and they don’t really do that. A lot of their running comes from Josh Allen on broken plays

james cook had one 100 yard game in the final 7 games

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hear ya on letting their receivers go but I’m just going by what Tiki said. I didn’t look at the stats.

    Tim

a lot of the Bills regression (from the season before) last season went out the window bc of how they ended the season and how we ended the season

but the reality is they really struggled at times on offense last season

they were very inconsistent last season

they fired their OC last season

they’ll probably fire their new OC within the next year or so

we just tanked at the end of last season

    that’s our problem

but it doesn’t make the bills good

  83. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    also

and I mean this in the nicest way possible

why do I have to argue with Dolfans about the Bills demise?

if the Bills achieve anything above my toilet paper, I don’t need to hear it from you guys

do we have to be sourpusses here bc of the way the season ended?

let’s celebrate the colossal wreck the bills have become

we haven’t been able to get past them the last few years

They have been our Achilles heal

if they have self inflicted wounds – it helps us

    we need it

pop the 🍾 when that happens

I know we have to show it on the field. But we can’t do that in April, so enjoy the Bills living up to their own tradition of choking

  87. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m agreeing with Piggy all the way even though I think Wilkins was a poorly done decision by Grier and is a top 5 DT. As much as I like Wilkins, finding a top tier speedster like Diggs is much harder on a team than a top DT. AD and Suh never impacted a team as much as getting Diggs impacted the Bills. Or getting Reek impacted us. Or having three great WRs helped Burrow. It’s not everything you need but it’s huge in a QB driven league. Every good QB has a top WR.

If Diggs was easy to find, no one would be paying picks and tons of money to get him. They’d just find their own Diggs in the draft. It’s that simple. Both him and Reek were 5th round wins that have dominated the landscape and are paid for what they’ve produced…huge money. The Bills might hit gold, but they’ve lost a ton of great players. They are worse now than last year, and as Piggy mentioned, they were very inconsistent all year long. The 2020 season, the Bills went to the AFC championship. They haven’t been back. It will be hard to get back unless they draft really well. No matter how much Allen abuses the system to get easy runs.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The game has become about passing and defending the pass. But teams that can’t run the ball or stop it usually struggle.

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    LT Armstead

    LG Wynn

    C Brewer

    RG Jones

    RT Jackson

Backup frontrunners seem to be Lamm, Driscoll and Eichenberg with others competing for a spot.

The issue on the OL and it’s not just with us, no team ever seems to stay healthy on the OL that’s why you need as many serviceable and versatile ones as possible.

  89. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

On defense the key might be Benito Jones and Brandon Pili at NT. We need to add a rookie with upside to the group but we do have some other guys competing at DE with Sieler. We need Phillips and Chubb on the edge to really make it work. Barrett is nice depth but not sure how many snaps he can handle anymore.

Our front seven is definitely being revamped in ways we’re not really up to speed with. Even the secondary has some new faces with Fuller and Poyer.

We really don’t know what our defense is going to look like. But it’s too early to think we’ve taken a step backwards.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  90. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – I read twitter every day. It reminds me of when I listened to WFAN in the days when Mike and Mad Dog were kings and Steinbrenner ran the Yankees. Yankee fans would call in relentlessly saying why don’t we get this guy and that guy so they would basically be fielding an All Star team at every position. It was ridiculous and annoying to listen to. Dolphins twitter is a lot like that. The Tua defenders are out of their minds, they refuse to admit or see his inability to come up big in big games (kind of like some of you here). They mock the Bills and Josh Allen incessantly like we beat them already when I know that when we play them at the end of the season, they’re going to ruin our season again because that’s what they do. There’s a discussion on WQAM as to whether the Dolphins are too much of a finesse team or we’re soft. I think maybe a bit of soft mixed in with a whole lot of finesse. We need a mauler or two on that O-line, guys that are physically difficult to move and have that nasty play through the whistle mentality. Guys that wear defenders down, that opposing players hate to play against. I know Brewer is supposed to be mobile, but is he one of those guys? JPJ seems like he would be more like that but we already signed Brewer.

Spotrac has our current cap at 5,787,965. On June 1 we will have 18.5 million more putting our cap at 24,287,965. With the top 51 cutoff at around 1 million, our draft picks should only cause about a 2 million hit putting us at 22,287,965(ish). Then, the contract on Lamm, subtract the 1 million top 51 cutoff and he will be around another 1 million hit putting us at 21,287,965(ish). Also, the extension on Mostert has not hit and is said to clear just a tiny bit of cap.

The market value on Tyler Boyd is 8.7 million. Say we sign him for 8 million minus the 1 million top 51 would put our cap at 14,287,965(ish). That is if he is still available come 6/1.

I bet we could get him for less.
