Less than 2 weeks – What might the Dolphins do to improve the team in the NFL Draft?

The NFL Draft is rapidly approaching, and we’re still guessing as to what the Dolphins will do, especially with the most important picks, RD1 and RD 2. Lots of people have their own ideas as to what to do, including trading back and acquiring more picks, or even trading up. The consensus, however, is mostly agreed upon O-line, D-line, or edge pass rusher. Sure, some say TE if Brock Bowers falls, or WR if Brian Thomas falls, but the majority seem to agree the trenches and outside pass rusher are most needed. In addition, the order in which those needs are tended to also vary. Regardless or which comes first, help on the O-line or help on the D-line or edge, most agree the other must be next.

On the offensive line, once a favorite for our spot at #21, Oregon OC Jackson Powers-Johnson has faded away some, mostly due to the 3 YR contract given to former Titans OC Aaron Brewer. To me, that move was a bit of a head scratcher, as Brewer is a negative in the pass blocking column, and pressure up the middle leaves Tua in danger. Does that mean OC is off the board? I’d say probably so. We all know we have no starting tackles on the roster past ’24 besides Austin Jackson. Terron Armstead will be retiring, he almost retired this season. Kendall Lamm and Kion Smith, backups are unsigned in 2025. Last year’s 7th RD pick Ryan Hayes is the only other OT on the roster in ’25, and of course, there’s no guarantee Hayes makes the roster or even the practice squad. The picture isn’t much better on the interior O-line, with OC Aaron Brewer the only one back in ’25. You can almost guarantee that one of the top 2 picks will be used on the O-line. In 2025, the Dolphins will be stocked with picks in each round except RD 6, including 2 picks in RD5 and RD 7. In addition, the Dolphins are in line to get compensatory picks, one of them should certainly be a 3rd RD unless DE Christian Wilkins gets injured or has a terrible ’24 season. The other compensatory picks may range from RD 5 to RD 7.

We know the Dolphins brought in quite a few veteran defensive linemen. The most recent pickup, Teair Tart has generated a lot of buzz. I’m not going to go into the Christian Wilkins saga, I know you’re all tired of that one, but it’s better than the alternative topic you all know and love! Maybe the defensive line will be a bunch of run stoppers, and the pass rush will go through the outside linebackers. We’re all aware our 2 best OLB’s and pass rushers could be on the shelf at season’s start. We brought in veteran pass Shaq Barrett. We kicked the tires on Carl Lawson. It’s obvious we’re looking to have players in place to give us some flexibility until Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb are healthy. In 2025, Chubb has a brutal dead cap hit, so you have to figure he’s safe for ’25. Jaelan Phillips on the other hand has only his 5th YR option, or a contract extension. Knowing Phillips, and his injury history, he’d prefer to have a contract extension. That being the case, it’s likely we’ll pick up at least one or 2 edge guys in this draft. I won’t be surprised if a DT/DE is not at play.

If we go edge rusher/OLB, Florida St. edge rusher Jared Verse and Alabama’s Dallas Turner lead the way, but both might be gone by pick #21. There are however a couple that should make it, UCLA’s Laiutu Latu, Penn State’s Chop Robinson, and Missouri’s Darius Robinson. Darius Robinson (6’5 285, 34.5″ arms) is more of a project guy, but his size is such that he could be incorporated on the D-line and potentially take some reps at DE, where Christian Wilkins played. That kind of flexibility is usually appreciated by Grier and Co., but due to the fact that Darius Robinson is just beginning to develop, they might look at a more finished product like Verse, Latu or Chop Robinson. We definitely need someone to come in and give us reps now, and potentially more than that if either Chubb or Phillips have a setback in their recovery.

I have seen some people wanting us to take a WR, and while I’d be very surprised, anything could happen. WR Brian Thomas is the only WR of the top 4 that could potentially be there at #21, because Harrison Jr. and Nabers will be top 10 picks, and Rome Odunze shortly after. I can see it being tempting for Chris Grier to give this offense another big weapon, as we continue to have the OBJ watch here in Miami. The only TE worthy of a 1st RD grade is Brock Bowers, who should be gone unless a lot of other players, namely QB’s get pushed up the board. If Bowers was there, he would also be a difficult guy to pass on,

After our first 2 picks, we could duplicate either OL, DL or EDGE, and we also have a need at S, and potentially RB, as Raheem Mostert is 32 years old, and DeVon Achane looks more and more like a part time player. Mostert was given an extension through 2025 and RB Chris Brooks will be under contract in ’25 as well, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we look for a RB in this draft, and no doubt will be bringing in lots of undrafted RB’s as well. Jaylen Waddle will be entering the final year of his rookie contract this season, so that’s Jaelan Phillips on defense and Jaylen Waddle on offense. We do have a 5th year option, but WR’s tend to hate those. Next season, we’ll need an ILB, as Jordyn Brooks and Channing Tindall are the only ones on the roster, David Long will be an UFA. Lots to do, and not a lot of picks to do with is the story for ’24. Once again though, we’re stocked pretty well in 2025.

It’s raining pucks on the Toronto Maple Leafs in south Florida tonight!!

The Florida Panthers rained 30 shots, that’s right, a season record 30 shots on goal in the second period to take a 4-2 lead into the final period of tonight’s contest. While some laugh at the suggestion that the Panthers are serious Stanley Cup CONTENDERS, I assure you that no one’s laughing in the Maple Leafs’ locker right now!

I told all of you a couple of days ago that the NHL could see a major realignment of its power rankings in the upcoming playoffs. Specifically, there’s a REAL CHANCE that a franchise that has never won the Stanley Cup will do so this time! It sure will add a lot of spice, and a lot of UPSETS, to the upcoming playoff pairings. And it sure won’t surprise me if a franchise that has NEVER WON THE STANLEY CUP will do so over the next several weeks.

    Mr. Campbell,

I HOPE you saw the mock draft I did on the last page! I took Troy Fautanu, OT, Washington, as my first pick!

    • mf13ss says:

IF he’s there for us (I doubt it), he’d be the heir to Terron Armstead as our future LT. In the meantime, he could play Guard.

  3. mf13ss says:

The very best outcome for us @ R1P21 (obviously) is for 5 QBs to go before we select. Should that happen, major talent will be pushed down the board to us… and that would give us a chance to trade down (IMO, no more than 3 to 4 selections), get a guy we want and need, while recouping our lost 3rd rounder due to Stevie Blunder’s BS.

  4. mf13ss says:

Man, I’m seeing Braden Fiske all over the place in terms of where he’ll get drafted. I’ve seen him recently being mocked in the 1st, and I’ve seen him recently being mocked in the 3rd.

Washington WR Jalen McMillan has been busy with top-30 visits and workouts. I’m told he’s visited Cardinals, Jaguars, Panthers, Dolphins, Chiefs (just left there) and Bengals … and had private workouts with Bills and Vikings. Could go as early as Round 2. Keep eye on Cincy.

But in a conversation with Blank, Kraft delivered a stark assessment of Belichick’s character, according to a source who spoke to two people: a close Kraft friend and a longtime Belichick confidant. The source quoted the Belichick source as saying, “Robert called Arthur to warn him not to trust Bill.” That account was backed up, the source said, by the close Kraft friend.

Multiple sources said that Kraft spoke with “some candor” to Blank about Belichick, though the sources declined to elaborate. One source close to Belichick said Kraft “was a big part” of why the Falcons passed on hiring him.

  9. bailbondmike says:

Joe Schad says 59% of Dolphins fans want them to draft BPA, 30% want best OL available, 8% want best DL/Edge available and 3% want a WR.

  10. bailbondmike says:

More nuggets from Dolphins GM Chris Grier:

    — Ongoing talks on cost to trade up/down. They have less than 21 1st round grades. Usually teams have 15-20. If MIA stays at 21, it feels good 1-2 guys with 1 will be there. It won’t be a QB.

  11. The Flying Pig says:

I have my own short list of players I think might be available at 21 and that we should draft

    1 Troy Fautanu

    2. Graham Barton

    3. Johnny Newton

    4. Laitu Latu

those are the 4 that come to mind as ideal/favorite picks. I have a handful of other picks I would be happy about like: cooper dejean, Tyler Guyton and Jackson Powers-Johnson

21 is a good spot to draft

I am also or sure a real good player will drop to us bc of the focus on QBs early for QB starved teams

  12. Randy says:

Trust what you heard about players during their college season. What you hear now is just politicking. Skill guys always get pushed up the closer we get to the draft at the expense of other positions.

  13. Tim Knight says:

I haven’t done a lot of research on the prospects this year. Mostly going by what you have all been saying and some stuff I have come across in articles and NFLN. Hopefully some of the guys we do draft make an immediate impact.

I’m feeling the exact same way, Brother. Seems as though both Cooper Beebe and Christian Haynes could very well be gone before we select @ R2P55.

How do we trade up? I’ve asked this question several times here: could we possibly borrow from our 2025 draft capital in order to do so?

    • Tim Knight says:

Teams are looking for players they believe in not just a number of picks and simply because you have to choose someone. That’s why I don’t care about stockpiling. Bring in guys that you feel will help you get to where you want to go.

    Dolphins’ Strength of Schedule

The Dolphins’ schedule won’t be an easy one, as they will face a second-place schedule due to finishing second in the AFC East in 2023. However, it could be much worse. According to PFN’s in-house metric, the Dolphins have the 17th-easiest schedule in the NFL – or the 15th-hardest.

  19. bailbondmike says:

WR RaMel Keyton made a top 30 visit to the Dolphins. Saw him in a few games playing for TN. He could end up being a day 3 steal. Big slot WR at 6’3 197 but also lines up outside. Doesn’t have blazing speed but more like deceptive speed, mid 4.4’s probably.

  22. bailbondmike says:

One week from today!!! Doing another mock draft. Surprise! 🙂

What to do??? I’m sitting at #21 with these guys still on the board (the # next to name is the PFN player ranking):

    21. Johnny Newton DT Illinois

    22. Byron Murphy II DT Texas

    23. Chop Robinson EDGE Penn State

    24. Nate Wiggins CB Clemson

    25. Cooper DeJean S Iowa

    26. Graham Barton OG Duke

    27. Jackson Powers-Johnson OC Oregon

BUT, I got a trade offer from the Bucs to move down 5 spots to #26 and pick up pick #92, a late 3rd round pick.

I could stay put and select, take the trade and still get one of these 7 players or I can counter to see if I can get more for the trade.

They have #57 which is too high unless I give up another pick. I could ask for #89 instead of #92 and/or ask for one of their picks in the 7th in addition to #89 or #92.

    What to do…

  23. bailbondmike says:

I countered and got #26, #89 and #220 for #21. Now have on the board:

    21. Johnny Newton DT Illinois

    24. Nate Wiggins CB Clemson

    25. Cooper DeJean S Iowa

    27. Jackson Powers-Johnson OC Oregon

Have a trade offer from SF to move down another 5 spots for picks #31 and #94. I don’t think that is worth missing out on Newton, DeJean or JPJ.

I have another offer from Cards to move down 1 spot for #27 and #66 but give up #26 and #89. One spot down to move up 23 spots in the top of the third round may be worth it. I can also counter to see what else I can get. I worry Cards might take JPJ then I will miss on the other top OG’s before I get to #55.

  24. bailbondmike says:

I took a chance and it paid off. Cards took CB Wiggins. I countered and traded picks #26 and #89 for #27, #66 and #162. Now have on the board:

    21. Johnny Newton DT Illinois

    25. Cooper DeJean S Iowa

    27. Jackson Powers-Johnson OC Oregon

Awesome scenario after moving down 6 spots and picking up #66, #162 and #220.

Three great players staring me in the face. What to do…

  25. bailbondmike says:

Pick is in. We took JPJ. I was worried all the other good OL would be gone before #55 and I was right. OG Haynes, OT Morgan, OC Frazier, OG Bebee, OT Paul all gone by #55.

Newton didn’t go until #50, don’t think that will really happen. If I was not going in “fast” mode I could have caught it and traded up for Newton. Again, I don’t think he falls that far anyway.

  26. bailbondmike says:

And the rest of the draft went like this:

    27. Jackson Powers-Johnson OC Oregon

    55. Chris Braswell EDGE Alabama

    66. Braden Fiske DT Florida State

    158. Kitan Oladapo S Oregon State

    162. Javon Foster OT Missouri

    184. Isaac Guerendo RB Louisville

    198. Dallin Holker TE Colorado State

    220. Jordan Magee LB Temple

    241. Ramel Keyton WR Tennessee

I felt Edge was more important than DT Fiske but still got him at #66. I think Braswell is just coming into his own with 13 sacks last year.

Oh yeah… NO TRADES! If we incorporated consensus trades, we could very well be doing this into the wee hours of the morning. I don’t think that’s in the interest of anyone.

Yes, this event is only going to cover the 1st round. Again, if we went all the way to the 2nd round for our pick @ R2P55, we’d be doing this into the wee hours of the morning.

I disagree with Randy on that one. Not only is Newton a very good run-stuffer, he’s got nice rush-prowess about him as well. He might not be Christian Wilkins 2.0, but he’s seriously very good.

I’d predict that Newton will eventually get double-digit sacks per season.

  37. bailbondmike says:

M13, I like Edge Kamara. I was selecting him back to last year into this year. Then, as a “homer” pick, I started selecting Edge Javontae Jean-Baptiste from ND. He should probably be an UDFA target. He is solid vs the run but in pass rush he has this split second hesitation on the snap giving the OT’s a half step to get into position. His tape vs Ohio State shows it on about every snap. I need to get over the homer picks. lol

I was taking Kamara in the 6th round (#184) but do believe he has climbed draft boards on many teams. When I do mocks now, he is never there at #184.

I have recently started liking Edge Braswell at #55.

    • mf13ss says:

It’s probably just me, but I can’t bring myself to take an EDGE so early… KNOWING we’ve got Jaelen Phillips, Brandon Chubb, and now Shaq Barrett in the fold.

And even if Phillips and Chubb are late to return from injury, I can’t help but feel we can get by without them in the interim. But that’s just me and my $.02.

  38. mf13ss says:

To me? There are only two players in the tier-1 bracket as it pertains to DTs: Byron Murphy II and “Johnny” Newton. A vast majority have Murphy as DT1 and Newton as DT2. Yet, a few have Newton as DT1.

The rest of this DT class are very well behind these two, IMO.

  39. mf13ss says:

2nd time for your MF’n mind (LOL)… I believe we have ‘sweet heart’ deals in place for C Connor Williams and DL/EDGE Emmanual Ogbah. Of course, we can’t sign them until Xavien Howard’s $$$ come off the books post June 1st.

    • mf13ss says:

That may explain why we gave OBJ an offer (a low offer) to join us. We just might have our $$$ (in thought) already allocated to Connor Williams and Ogbah.

      • mf13ss says:

Hey, I could be COMPLETELY wrong on this theory, but I think it stands to reason.

      • mf13ss says:

And then of course, our so-called offer to OBJ (he won’t accept it) could be used to further motivate EZ-E to become our next great WR.

  40. Randy says:

    M13,

I won’t be available tomorrow night. Here’s what I see with Newton. He is going to struggle with disengaging and making plays at the next level. I don’t see double digit sacks if he stays inside. I see a guy who gets engaged in blocks far too easily. He makes plays off them in college, but I do t think he will in the NFL. Now, he’s a good athlete who could learn how to use his hands better to keep guys off him. I don’t think he’s terrible. I just think he’s more of a late 1st….early 2nd. But, I think that about lots of guys. Lol

    • mf13ss says:

THANK YOU for your take on Newton, my guy. I appreciate it!

SUCKS you won’t be able to participate tomorrow night, man. I think I speak for ALL when I say I really like your takes. You’ll be missed tomorrow night!

  41. Randy says:

    M13,

Newton is also on the small side. He’s not as big as Wilkins…who wasn’t exactly huge. I’d bet you he’s gonna play under 300 pounds. I’m not sure he’ll hold up inside, but it depends on how he’s used. The dude can scoot from side to side. He plays with a nice motor. He does have power for his size. He reminds me of a John Randle type but not nearly as good.

Steve, hate to say it but that is your choice but a weak argument. That makes no sense.

Over 50 players in the HOF are from small schools.

I didn’t list the over 25 QB’s who came from small schools who became NFL starters and some even won a SB.

Then currently on the Dolphins roster, about 1/3 are from small schools: TYREEK HILL, JEFF WILSON, MIKE WHITE, TANNER CONNOR, JODY FORTSON, JULLIAN HILL, JANNU SMITH, AARON BREWER, ROBERT JONES, TERRON ARMSTEAD, KION SMITH, ZACH SEILER, JONATHAN HARRIS, ISAIAH MACK, TEAIR TART, QUINTON BELL, SHAQUIL BARRETT – COLORADO STATE, ZEKE VANDENBURGH, KADER KOHOU, SIRAN NEAL, NIK NEEDHAM, ELIJAH CAMPBELL.

Kamara has good skills already. I’d say he’s a third rounder.

  44. Randy says:

This draft seems strong along the OL and weak along the DL. I keep looking at guys who guys talk about, and I don’t see many really good DL.

  45. Tim Knight says:

    A message from Tua.

  46. Randy says:

    BBM,

Where’s Latu supposed to go? I’d take him with our first. Kamara and he are kinda similar. My preference would be OL, but ultimately I just want a good player.

    • Tim Knight says:

“but ultimately I just want a good player.”

      ^ this

    • Mike E. says:

Latu should be available. Verse may fall to us too. I’d take Verse

    • bailbondmike says:

It’s a crap shoot Randy. Read an article that the average 1st round grade given by teams this year is around 19-20 players. I hear the Dolphins have 21 players with a 1st round grade. There will be some teams taking a QB, OL or even a CB they don’t have a 1st round grade on before we pick. I think there may be 4-5 players left at #21 who we have a 1st round grade on. I would think they would have a 1st round grade on Latu.

Turner and Latu are top 2 Edge, IMO, but even Verse will be gone 1st round. It will all come down to how many QB’s, OL, and WR’s go in the top 20. I have seen Latu go as early as #14 and I have seen him available at #21. I have seen Verse go before Latu.

    • bailbondmike says:

Out of 10 draft sites, they all have Latu ranked from 10-16. Latu is the top ranked Edge on a couple of them. The same 10 sites have Dallas Turner ranked from 6-16. Again, the same 10 sites have Verse ranked from 7-21. Chop Robinson is all over the place with one site having him as the #2 Edge ranked at 8 (NFL.com) but, on the low end, PFF and Draftwire have him at 40 and 42 respectively.

  47. bailbondmike says:

I think I am down to wanting OL (Latham, Barton or JPJ) in the 1st and Edge Braswell at #55. As I said in my mock this morning, I really fear all the plug and play caliber OL will be gone by #55. Though we could try to use one of our 2025 3rd round picks to move up from #55 for maybe Chop Robinson.

    • steveccnv says:

If we go OL we need to draft the Armstead replacement, none of the others will crack the starting lineup

      • bailbondmike says:

That is how I feel. I wish Latham would fall to us but I am not holding my breath. I think either Barton, JPJ or even Bebee could win one of the starting OG spots.

  48. bailbondmike says:

Steve, I gotcha above. A small school kid projected 1st or 2nd round is a little different than one projected as a day 3 prospect.

  49. Mike E. says:

M – WR is more of a luxury pick. There’s a huge need for OL and edge rusher

  50. Tim Knight says:

From what I read about Weaver and the defense he will likely run is he likes to show a lot of different blitz formations but not send the kitchen sink. So we’ll be sending different players to get after the QB. He also spoke about wanting to be very physical against the run so that seems to fit with the big DTs we’ve added. He wants us to be the bullies and force teams to pass.

    • steveccnv says:

Bully-ball is a better cold weather and playoff D IMO

If we can hold our own in the front 7, getting a guy like Cooper on the back end could take our D to the next level, and be an insurance policy for paying Holand

Ramsey and Cooper moving around could be a nightmare for our opponents O

  51. Krishna says:

Lol…I just found out it was National Columbine Day! Who knew?!

  52. Mike E. says:

Steve – I don’t think it was our defense that was ill equipped to handle the cold weather, I think it’s more on the offense, don’t you?

    • steveccnv says:

What does the O’s inneptitude have to do with the D trying to be more battle tested?

      • Mike E. says:

I think the injuries to our defense is what hurt us the most. If we had a healthy defense, I don’t think that the defense was going to be the problem.

  53. Mike E. says:

    NEW BLOG UP!!!

  54. bailbondmike says:

Dolphins had a private visit recently with TCU safety Mark Perry.

  55. Mike E. says:

I’m sure most of you don’t watch SNL, I don’t, but saw this skit. It’s pretty funny!
