6 Days until the 2024 NFL Draft!

Time is ticking down, and all of the storylines are coming to a head. Arguments supporting trading up, staying put, and trading back are at full throttle all over the NFL landscape, especially here in Miami. I can get on board with either as long as we come away with at least 2 players that will play a lot of the ’24 season and make a positive impact. My feeling is OL and EDGE are the 2 places with the strongest needs, followed closely by 3-4 DE. If you’re looking to trade back, the age old phrasing of the talent from 21-55 was pretty even so we wanted get another player or two in that area to help our team. In the unlikely scenario where we trade up, it will be this is a player we really felt would impact our team right now and in the future. As far as staying put, the dialogue will be we felt like staying put would net us the player we wanted, that someone valuable was going to fall to us. In any of these scenarios, it’s not how or why we got there, it’s who the player is, and ultimately how the player fares and impacts the team this season. Make no mistake, we’re not taking a player that will be sitting on the bench and learning in ’24, we simply have way too many holes to fill.

If it’s going to be an edge rusher, which I think is very likely, the names that pop up are FSU’s Jared Verse, UCLA’s Laiatu Latu and Penn State’s Chop Robinson. If we’re looking at O-line, the scope widens some, from a plug-n-play OC/G like Jackson Powers-Johnson, to possibly an OT that could play inside or sub for Terron Armstead/Austin Jackson if necessary, such as Washington’s Troy Fautanu, who would have to fall some, or Georgia’s Amarius Mims, or Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton. There are a few OG’s that we could take either with a trade back or our 2nd pick, such as Kansas St’s Cooper Beebe, Connecticut’s Christian Haynes, or Michigan’s Zak Zinter. The reason I believe we go defense first is because the dropoff is pretty significant at both EDGE and/or DT/DE, while the O-line has some players that should be available in RD 2 or later that could step in and play immediately.

As of this moment, the Dolphins have still not come to an agreement with QB Tua Tagovailoa on an extension, although we keep hearing a deal is imminent. I would think both sides want to protect themselves, it’s a tough spot for both sides. Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert have been paid. Daniel Jones has also been paid. I believe Tua falls somewhere in between those 4. The other aspect on this situation is that I believe Tua is in an ideal place to for his skillset. Not to say he couldn’t have success elsewhere, but the HC who is a staunch believer in him, and has handcrafted the offense around his strengths is a huge boon for Tua. The Climate is also conducive to his success, you don’t want Tua in Green Bay, or Buffalo for that matter. I feel like that does give the Dolphins some leverage due to those things, but only so much that Tua and more so his representation wants to see the money. Is it possible that Tua plays the season without an extension? I’d think the odds are low, but if that were to happen, the Dolphins could tag Tua next season and let the market decide what he’s worth.

Tonight, here on FMU, we will be conducting our annual Mock Draft at 7PM, led by none other than our own M13. Please try and make it if you can, the more participation we have, the more fun it will be. We’ll all be voting for each and every pick for every team, all 32. For those on the West Coast, my apologies on the early start, hop in later if you can’t make the start. Hope to see a bunch of you here at 7PM tonight!

I have always said Worthy is not just a track guy. He is a superb route runner. A player like him does not come around often. That is why I think this is a true possibility with MM.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

ridiculous pick IMO, we don’t need 2 blazing fast WRs, we need a #2, that compliments #1, by doing things #1 can’t/doesn’t do, like box out and catch contested balls in tight spaces

All of these yards Tua amassed against shitty teams looks great in the stats, but not so great against good teams, when Tua has time and fairly open receivers he’s unstoppable

Having the best OL we can goes a long ways to making that happen, problem is will a 2024 drafted OL contribute enough this year

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This draft is the first time in Dolphins history to not have a 3rd and 4th round pick.

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

It’s never a bad idea to draft WRs these days. Because of the rules, they are becoming crucial to offenses. After the QB they are now the next most important position. You can never have too many. Now, I wouldn’t draft one in the first round this year, but their value is such that I could understand picking one. Hill might be gone in another year. Waddle’s health is always going to be a concern. Developing a young stud WR could show foresight.

  16. Randy's avatar Randy says:

If Mason McCormick from SDSU is still there in the 5th, he’d be an interesting prospect. He’s got tons of experience at tackle, but he’s an NFL guard. Getting him in the 5th would be an option if they don’t want to go OL earlier.

  17. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t really think it’s a great idea to go WR early

we really struggled in both 22 and 23 when teams are being physical so try bout speed

if you just add more speed I’m not sure we get past that

I prefer we sign a vet WR to be our 3

OBJ might not be popular, he might be a primadona and he might be expensive but he will be able to get off the LOS – the guy has always made tough catches

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We need to be more physical, stronger on the O-line and more consistent in the pass rush. Any player on the O-line whether it’s one of the top 6 tackles or one of the best interior guys like Barton who can play inside or outside, or JPJ will work. Latu or if Verse falls, or maybe even Chop could help us. I think getting another fast receiver may not pay dividends until Tyreek is gone

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. I wish Ezukanma could be that guy.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BTW, I haven’t seen one person who thinks Brewer is our C. That seems crazy, considering they gave him a 3 year contract for $24M. That’s an expensive depth guy, no?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They didn’t sign him to be depth. I saw a few articles when we signed him that said Miami has their new center. He’s very athletic and physical and in our system that’s a good fit because our OL do a lot of moving and trapping.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know these people that are saying this aren’t Grier, but I just see in general a lot of people have us taking either JPJ or Barton.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure what you mean saying it isn’t Grier?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I think he’s our center

If we drafted JPJ – I think it’s to play OG

Brewer is a very mobile center and he’s probably going to be best pulling outside on some of the outside runs we do a lot of

I think he’s going to be good here

His skill set doesn’t match a Derrick Henry bruising style of running game – I kind of think he gets a bad rap and will really benefit from the change of teams

calculated the percentage of 1st-round picks that “hit” or “miss,” based upon whether that player signed a second contract with the team that drafted them.   The data encompasses the 20 drafts spanning 2000-2019. Here are the positional hit rates:

    Image
  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I meant a lot of experts, like Brian Baldinger, Kyle Crabbs, Adam Beasley, and a few others I’ve heard that seem to just ignore that Brewer signed a 3 year contract. While you’re saying he’s our starting C, if his pass blocking sucks, he won’t be for long, I’ll tell you that much

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

it’s kind of amazing how many hits there are on OL im general

the top 3 hits are OL

I was under the impression that we were seeking less and less OL draftee success recently – seems like a like of OL struggle early to me but I guess the data indicates otherwise

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

oh I think I missed something

this is based on whether they sign a 2nd contract with the team that drafted them – so yeah makes sense, teams usually make a push to keep their own OL

not exactly determinative on whether the draftee is successful or not

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

well, one would have to assume that they aren’t signing them to a second contract if they suck!

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

that’s informative and all but it’s somewhat flawed to judge a guy a miss if he walks in FA as Wilkins did. Wilkins was not a miss in the sense of bust, which is what most people think this chart is showing … that is … the historical bust rate per position.

but there are multiple examples of excellent players who are certainly not busts who for whatever reason did not last with their drafting team.

Minka Fitzpatrick is definitely NOT a bust.

Laremy Tunsil … NOT a bust.

Brett Favre was NOT a bust.

Using that databit as a miss (bust) defining metric is invalid.

  23. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

about Brewer and his crummy sacks yielded rate, his HC got fired for poor scheme.

His starting QB was a very raw and chaotic rookie who bailed on plays frequently and usually way too soon and had some success and some disaster and soon enough got a season-ending injury.

It’s probably hard to both hike the ball consistently and then block for a kid who runs wild on every blitz and frustrating to call blocking assignments only to find the QB is not where the play was drawn up for him to be.

Let’s see what Brewer can do when McDaniel let’s him use his speed and agility to leap out into the second level and lay the wood to a LB who is 75 pounds lighter instead of leaning back into a pass set against a NT who is 30 pounds heavier and can see the rookie making an Ill-considered desperation scramble on every other down.

PS Brewer also had to block for Tannehill.

    (Mic drop)

That’ll raise any OL’s sacks yielded rate, right?

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

PFF graded Brewer 26th in pass protection last season and seventh in run blocking. His overall offensive grade, 71.6, ranked second in his career behind the 76.2 he received in 2020. In pass protection, Brewer’s 52.2 was second in his career to 66.2. In run blocking, Brewer’s 78.7 also was second, behind 81.1.Mar 12, 2024

  25. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m not saying Brewer’s pass blocking history at center (mostly it was just the one year) is stellar.

the comment was whether Grier and McDaniel think they have their center and think they don’t need to draft one.

I think they do think so as evidenced by the contract they gave him.

    and they won’t draft one.

    And why should they?

He’s too light to play guard but a prototype in speed and agility for McDaniel’s scheme of chip and run blocking.

  26. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

now with BPA, if JPJ is there, maybe they take him and try HIM at RG. He is nasty enough and might be a light and quick OG just like Brewer is a light and quick C.

but there’s a couple lightning fast WRs who might be there and a couple feisty EDGE guys and those are BIG needs.

  27. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Mike, I said from the moment we signed Brewer that he’s our Center. Listen to me not “people” , he’s our Center and his pass blocking is nullified by Tannehill being his QB you should know that as well as I do.

    Cooper!

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Look at the Detroit Lions! Giving big contracts to their own draft picks. Contrast that with the Dolphins who let their best players walk. One of those teams is doing it right, and I tend to think it’s not ours.

  29. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

but I wouldn’t mind drafting either of those WRs in round 1.

they’ll make us a better team because we really did get Hill and Waddle nullified last year because we had no WR3 getting open and no TE that defenses feared.

I thought and I think McDaniel thought that teams couldn’t double both Waddle and Hill, but they did.

I know we brought back Berrios, but he’s for the return game. Jonnu will help a lot.

I think of how dangerous teams like Cincy and KC are who have 3 or 4 weapons in the pass game. That’ll take the safety out of the box, so Achane and Mostert can hit the flat at full speed with the DBs having their backs turned.

    That’s a TD.

That’ll help Tua run also just like with Mahomes running up the backs of safeties not paying attention.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

KC has Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice and then it’s great work by Mahomes. There’s not one receiver on that roster I would take over ours with the exception of Rice

  30. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I wouldn’t be shocked to see us take a WR. Once Tua signs, if we sign Waddle to a comparable salary of what these guys in his draft class are getting the will be shelling out about $100 million for them and Hill

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That would be great. Way to build a team! They’re gonna get crushed by the same teams this year if we draft a WR with out first pick

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Exactly, Hill will be gone after this season or after next. No one else on our roster has stepped up. Who will we have at WR when hill is gone. Waddle.

Brewer led all NFL Centers last season in total pressures surrendered (34) and yielded the 2nd most sacks (6).

Maybe he fits our outside-ZBS in term of run-blocking, but he sure as hell doesn’t breed confidence when it comes to pass-blocking.

The Miami Dolphins were busy during free agency, trying to plug holes after losing Christian Wilkins, Rob Hunt andAndrew Van Ginkel, to name a few. Even now they still have needs on the edge, for a third receiver, on the offensive line and at defensive tackle. How will they fill them?

When does six equal nine? When Chris Grier is running the Dolphins’ draft. Miami currently owns six picks, but dealin’ Chris rolls up his sleeves, makes three trades during the draft, and comes away with nine players, five on offense, four on defense, to address most needs. (Filling one nagging hole becomes a source of frustration, as you’ll see.)

Round 1, Pick 21: Laiatu Latu, edge, UCLAWith Jaelan Phillips coming off that Achilles injury, Dolphins grab the prospect in this draft most like him, right down to the No. 15 jersey with the Bruins. Even when Phillips and Bradley Chubb are healthy, having three quality edge rushers is never a bad thing.

Round 3, Pick 88: Cooper Beebe, guard, Kansas StateGrier puts in a call to Green Bay, kisses the No. 55 overall pick goodbye but lands three picks in return, including two in the third round. Grier knows Rob Hunt will be missed, so he scoops up the Big 12 offensive lineman of the year who has been called a bulldozer.

Round 3, Pick 100: Cade Stover, tight end, Ohio StateOhio State tight end Cade Stover.

Round 5, Pick 139: Brenden Rice, receiver, USCA buzz comes over South Florida, and a sigh over the Bay Area, as the Dolphins land Jerry Rice’s son.

Round 5, Pick 143: Caedan Wallace, offensive tackle, Penn StateHow did the Dolphins end up at 143? They didn’t like the landscape at 126 — the defensive tackle talent they’ve been hoping for continues to elude them. Grier throws a pizza box in frustration. McDaniel is relieved to see the pizza box was empty. Grier then gets on the horn with Atlanta, offering 126 for 143 and 187. It seemed they had a deal, but the Falcons, just to be difficult, hold out until Grier tosses in 241 to get them out of his hair. Wallace can play guard or tackle and is polished. Grier looks around, wondering who ate the last slice.

Round 5, Pick 158: Cedric Gray, linebacker, North CarolinaAll-ACC ‘backer made 121 tackles last year, with 11 for loss. Dolphins will like his speed.

Round 6, Pick 184: Beaux Limmer, center, ArkansasStrong 302-pounder excels at run blocking but has to work on pass protection or he won’t be snapping to Tua Tagovailoa.

Round 6, Pick 187: Darius Muasau, linebacker, UCLAGet ready to hear more talk about this guy’s outstanding motor than you will at the upcoming Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix.

Round 6, Pick 198: Beau Brade, safety, MarylandNice sixth-round bookends, a Beaux and a Beau. Good ball skills.

We need to be more physical, stronger on the O-line and more consistent in the pass rush.

Lol, we had 56 sacks last year, I guess you’re saying we need more pressures😜

Silly boy! We lost Wilkins, and who knows when Phillips and Chubb will be really back, and we also lost AVG and Ogbah. Between Wilkins, Ogbah and AVG, that’s more than a 1/3 of those sacks. We hope Phillips and Chubb pick up where they left off.
