2024 NFL Draft – The Miami Dolphins are on the clock

As of this writing, the Dolphins first pick will come at #21 in the 1st Round. It’s possible we stay there, or it’s also possible we trade back to acquire another pick or two, considering the huge gap we have after our 2nd Round pick (#55) and our next pick in Round 5 at #158, which is over one hundred picks later. It’s possible Grier could trade up into an earlier using draft capital from next year’s draft, but the trade back is the more likely means of getting an extra pick or two. The roster is in need of instant contribution, this is not the time to start grooming guys for next year or beyond, we need at least two of our players to be playing significant snaps this season right out of the chute.

In our own FMU Mock Draft, the consensus chose interior offensive lineman from Oregon Jackson Powers-Johnson. Whether you subscribe to the theory that our center is already on the roster in Aaron Brewer or not, most experts feel JPJ will be an excellent NFL center for the next decade or so. JPJ could also slide to OG, most likely RG, where Robert Hunt was last season. We signed OG Robert Jones to a one year deal and he’s penciled in at RG at the moment, with Isaiah Wynn, also here for a one year contract at LG. We need a player to be a force on that O-line this year and beyond, because next season the majority of the O-line disappears, with the exception of OC Aaron Brewer and RT Austin Jackson, and if Brewer doesn’t improve on his pass blocking, we may wish for him to disappear! LT Terron Armstead, LG Isaiah Wynn, RG Robert Jones, OT/OG Jack Driscoll, OT’s Kendall Lamm and Kion Smith are all GONE in 2025. We do have our full complement of draft picks in 2025, and could potentially have the money to sign a 2nd or 3rd tier FA or two, and we’ll probably have to considering 3 of our 5 starting OL right now are not on the roster in 2025. Be confident that one of our first 2 picks will be on the O-line.

There’s been some hype that we might take a WR with our first pick. I don’t see it happening, and I truly hope it doesn’t happen. WR Brian Thomas carries a similar grade to a few guys we chose in our own Mock Draft, players like OLB Laiatu Latu, OLB Chop Robinson, DE/DT Byron Murphy, OT Troy Fautanu, OT/C Graham Barton and OT Olumuyiwa Fashanu, and I believe any one of those guys would make a larger impact on our season and roster than a 3rd WR, but I suppose that’s partially up to HC Mike McDaniel. The other WR often mentioned is the fastest WR in the draft, Xavier Worthy from Texas. He would be a huge reach at #21, but would make more sense ( not to me!) after trading back.I like to stress how much flux this team is in, because it concerns me. We just took the 5th year options on WR Jaylen Waddle and OLB Jaelan Phillips. S Jevon Holland is a Free Agent next season, and if he has a healthy season and plays well, may as well kiss him goodbye, unless of course we’re willing to pay ridiculous free agency prices. Perhaps after June 1st, we’ll address Holland, but we did just let 2 talented young starters walk in Free Agency just a short while ago, so we’ll see what happens there. BTW, we also have yet to give Tua that big contract, but there’s speculation it might come after June 1st, where more cap money will be available. I find that odd because so many here were sure that the Tua extension was going to be the enabler to keep our own players entering FA, and his extension would likely have a small 2024 cap hit. Who knows?

On the NFL’s draft page, they list our top needs as OL, DL, and TE. I can agree with one and two, not so much on 3. We picked up TE Jonnu Smith, and I think he’s going to be very good in our offense. Would it be nice to have TE Brock Bowers, who is a George Kittle type of TE, sure, but he should be long gone by #21. I’ve seen a lot of buzz about Texas TE J’aTavion Sanders to Miami. He’s probably going to be a 2nd or 3rd RD pick at the latest, and we have more pressing needs than a TE. If we go O-line with #21, I’d expect either a DT/DE at #55 or and OLB pass rusher type of player there. With both Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb rehabbing from serious injuries, and achilles tear and ACL surgeries, we need to have an impact player available to pair with the aged OLB Shaq Barrett. We no longer have AVG to come and save the day. Also, it’s possible that our cobbled together D-Line of JAG’s (with the exception of Zach Sieler) could be fine, but I’d like to add some young, impactful talent there too. You win in the trenches, or maybe more fitting, we’ve been losing in the trenches. I want a playoff ready team that’s tough in the trenches and able to take on the bad boys like Buffalo, KC and Baltimore.

I fully expect to be angry after our draft (I know, I’m always angry, right?), but I hope to be pleasantly surprised. Shore up the O-line and get a top notch pass rusher, whether he’s on the D-line or at outside LB, just find one! We could use a WR if Erik Ezukanma doesn’t have a breakout season. We definitely need a Safety, especially if we don’t give our young up and coming star Jevon Holland an extension, and even if we do. We lost both DeShon Elliott and Brandon Jones in free agency, and Jordan Poyer is 33 today, Happy Birthday Jordan! Poyer is also here on a 1 year contract, like I said, a whole lotta 1 year contracts. There’s going to be a lot of new players on this team in 2025, good thing we have all our picks and then some! Here’s to hoping for the best and expecting the worst as always! Enjoy!

I kind of feel like Grier is playing baseball-style money ball with the roster. I don’t like it and don’t think it works in football.

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Time and time again we hear people say we should trade down because we have lots of needs

Yeah, let’s draft 9 guys to fill out the depth

Grier is using 1 yr contracts for depth, guys that actually have some history in the league, instead of wet behind the ears rookies, that may take several years to get to where the 1 yearers are now

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not sustainable Steve. This team is going to have huge turnover next season, and probably the next as well. He’s not building a team, he’s filling rosters. There won’t really be a core of the team, and then if he continues with this model, he’s going to let the core guys go anyway.

  5. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Thank you for your efforts…kinda feel the same way. We need our first 2 to hit! And, hopefully, an acorn or two…lol

    IT”S DRAFT DAY BITCHES!!!!

Until Rock does more mocks than me, I can say this. lol

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am so disgusted that I haven’t done a single mock draft this year. When we get the new GM it may be fun again….

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I was catching up on yesterday’s posts and I find it hilarious how you guys put such blind faith in a guy who has a proven track record of failing to identify and assemble a functional Oline that he has nailed it this time with an undersized Center who was among the worst in the league at pass blocking. Oh, but he is such a good scheme fit. LOL!!! as if we don’t pass in our scheme! He is fucking closet to the worst!

You know what the Miami Dolphins were the worst at last year? Converting 1 or 2 yards. VERY BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE. Yeah, an undersized “Puller” is going to help that. NOT! Grief is a bum and the sooner he his fired or better yet, put in front of a firing squad, the better for Team.

Nope all is good here. SMH I AM TELLING YOU SO so I can tell you I told you so later.

    PUT DOWN THE KOOL-AID!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      LOL!! Tell ’em Rocko!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I was baffled at the signing. The way they did the contract, we can move on from him after 2025 with a minimal dead cap hit.

That said, I do not see us running up the middle on short yardage at all, successfully that is. I think he will be just ok in pass pro until we play teams like the Bills, Chiefs or any team who have good pass rushing DT’s. Also, teams who are good at taking away Tua’s first read where he needs more time.

Hmmmm, it’s interesting that after the Brewer signing, Tua started training to drop a little mass and work on his mobility. Or was that just a coincidence? lol

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Good write MikeE. I am all over the place on what could happen at #21.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Phelon – Good analogy with money ball. As for the future of this team, this team HAS NO FUTURE! So many people on this roster will be gone next season. He’s playing it year to year right now. That’s dangerous, extremely dangerous in a sport that has a salary cap.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

What do you mean “Gone” Mike? The great Chris Grier can just bring them all back on one year deals. Simple…

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      Yep!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Grier comes from the NE cheat factory, where king cheat circumvented the rules year after year to his favor

Using cheap labor is how today’s NFL works, some do it with rookies some with vets on 1 yr deals, these guys don’t make the team go, just supporting cast, but they do have experience, that rookies don’t

Every team plays it year to year with the supporting cast, that’s what FA is

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not to the extent we are Steve. Look around the NFL, especially the perennial playoff teams like the Ravens, Chiefs, and Steelers

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Steve, Grier has been in Miami since 2000 He left NE the year Belicheat became head coach. They never worked together unless you count 1996 when BB was a defensive backs coach and Grier was a regional scout. I doubt very much that they had much interaction.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ok Rock, then memory fails, but he’s using a lot of what Belicheat did to keep his team at the top

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike, every playoff type team keeps most of their main players, many of the rest are gone year to year

Sure some years more than others like us this year, but that’s what happens when you’re over the cap, every team goes thru it at some point

  10. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am going to be so content to watch the Panthers play in the playoffs tonight instead of watching Grief fuck up the team more by picking a kicker or wide receiver at #21!

The Panthers are quickly replacing the Dolphins as my favorite team!

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I didn’t say I am satisfied with Brewer at Center. I said FO is.

and then I said why I think they think so.

latest mock I read picked Jared Verse for us. He has boom or bust potential.

in the spirit of “the first pick must become a star” let’s hope one of those F tackles or Barton drops to us even though they’d play RG to start.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know you said Barton for our draft. I think he’d be a very solid pick for us Naples, even if he has to play C because Brewer sucks.

  12. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

And MikeE has pretty much dropped it, as he said he would, but the same ‘scheme’ that had Tua passing under 2.5 seconds to his “First read” is the same scheme that allowed the piss poor pass blockers (which go WORSE this off season!!!) to not allow as many sacks as they would if they weren’t throwing timing routes. Mess up the timing on a timing route and there is no “third read” You throw to a spot that you expect your receiver to be in .

Adding lesser pass blockers will NOT increase Tua’s ability to play “off script” and that is not Tua’s fault

  13. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    geez Mike E … Rock …

you guys some phone books to tear up? or some gators to rassle?

Cuz you guys are contributing to global warming here today,

and we haven’t even picked a WR in 1 and traded our #55 for

Tannehill to come in and compete with Tua yet!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

All good Naples. I’m just saying true on how I feel about Grier and how he’s creating the roster. I don’t have faith in him, but I want to be pleasantly surprised. I root for the logo, not the GM, HC, or any specific player over the team.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Are Bonix and Penix related?

  15. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Just read an article about a couple, that feel stuck in their home, because of interest rates

They’re 10 yrs into a 15 yr mortgage in Alabama, and would like to downsize in Tenn

Hello McFly! Sell your house and take the proceeds to buy your new home

On the loan 10 years ago, they’d owe only about 25% of the borrowed amount

The Tenn downsized home might be purchased with cash or a small loan, so no or much smaller mortgage, who cares that the interest rates went up, when you have a small loan

IDK what their equity is, maybe they took out some cash on a 2nd, but I hear these stories in general all the time as to reasons why people don’t want to sell now, makes no sense for those downsizing and only have a few years left on the mortgage

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Since they are only 66% through the original loan and interest is what’s taken first, I bet they are closer to still owing 40-42% of the original loan. Also, as homeowners in Alabama, there’s a strong possibility they live in a rural area and it’s harder to sell that home.

Second, home prices in TN have skyrocketed so they could be paying more on a house that is much smaller in TN. I read earlier that a 400,000 home in 2020 cost about 600k when paid off and that same home today would cost over a million. That’s a very significant difference. Downsizing does not mean paying less in Biden’s America.

    BTW

I see where the jest Pack Boys Bengals and Browns pay their HC the least of all and 4 of the highest paid 10 HC last year got fired.

  17. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Do’s and Dont’s from Joe Shad

Do trade back if one of the three or four players you really covet are snagged ahead of No. 21.

Don’t trade back if one of those players is there.

Do draft a player who can contribute to the playoff push in 2024.

Don’t draft a “project” or “developmental talent” with “upside” and “ceiling.”

Do draft Washington guard/tackle Troy Fautanu if he’s somehow available. Same goes for left tackle Olu  Fashanu of Penn State. And UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu.

Don’t feel pressure to select a second-tier edge rusher simply because of injuries at the position.

Do select defensive tackle Byron Murphy II if he believe he’s another Christian Wilkins.

Don’t select a defensive tackle if you aren’t sure he’s an impact pass rusher.

Do consider WR Brian Thomas, Jr., or Xavier Worthy if all the aforementioned players are gone and you believe he is needed to replace Tyreek Hill in the not-distant future.

Don’t take a quarterback, running back, kicker, snapper or punter in the first round. Hah. OK, so, in all seriousness, don’t take a cornerback or safety.

Do prioritize guard, edge rusher and tackle. Ideally, there is a guard, tackle, guard/tackle, edge rusher or defensive tackle selected in Round 1 and then one of those positions or receiver in Round 2.

Do consider a safety, cornerback, defensive tackle and edge rusher in Rounds 5 and 6.

Don’t force a quarterback pick you don’t truly like in Rounds 5-7.

Do trust your eyes. And your gut.

Don’t put too much weight into testing, metrics or interviews.

Do ace this. Miami needs a starter in Round 1 and immediate contributor in Round 2.

Don’t mess it up. No busts. Safer the better in Rounds 1 and 2.

  27. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,

I wouldn’t mind dropping and taking Newton, but I’d prefer him in the 40 range. We seem to be going big along the DL, so I think there may be better fits at a better value.

I have barely looked at Latham because I figured he wouldn’t be there when we pick, but I’d be extremely happy. I’ve watched him play a few times. Latham might end up being the best tackle in this draft.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

In the mock above Newton was still there when I picked Latham. I have heard the new DC likes to rotate DT’s a lot and we signed like 9 of them this off season and I think OT is a bigger “need” with our LT contemplating retirement and us basically begging him not to so we wouldn’t have to deal with his cap hit this year.

  28. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,

I prefer going IOL, but if Latham is there I snap him up in a second. He’s a potential 10 year high end OT. And, in the 20s, he’s a steal.

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Supposedly, Latham is strictly a RT

  30. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

From M’s post the other day:

    @LanceZierlein

Offensive linemen and the way teams view them… Top 40 OL and their position fits/flexibility

    Alt – LT/RT

    Fuaga – LT/RT/OG

    Fautanu – LT/RT/OG

    Barton – OC/OG

    Latham – RT/OG

    Fashanu – LT/RT

    Guyton – LT/RT

    Mims – RT

    JPJ – OC/OG

    Morgan – LT/OG

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
I really don’t bother thinking LT/RT these days. Every team can bring pressure from anywhere along the DL these days, and “strong” side “weak” side in the running game also isn’t as big a deal because teams don’t use TEs like they used to and use motion a lot more. Latham’s size suggests RT, but he’s also athletic. His weaknesses are almost all technique issues. I don’t think he’s great, but I think he’ll be a high end long term starter on the OL. Again, potentially. Lol

  32. Randy's avatar Randy says:

And I’ll just say it here….Jackson STILL has the athleticism to play LT. Could the team move him back now that he’s matured a little bit? I don’t think it was playing RT that made the difference. I think it was simply that he grew up and became a man. He’s started not playing like a boy among men. He gained confidence and garnered some toughness playing alongside Hunt.

  33. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I decided to not do a final mock.

  34. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Latham kind of gets overlooked but there are a bunch of OTs like him that seem to be overlooked although he will probably go high

this draft is really deep at OT – if you want one, you’ll get one

but some of them may be more likely to play RT, others might need a little more time – that said, that’s normal in a draft

unless you are picking really high, everyone has warts

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

What? I was hoping to see hourly mock draft updates from you all day today! Come on, man….its not like you got anything better to do. Lol

  36. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Piggy,

That’s kind of where I’m at. If they want a quality OL….pretty much at every position…you can get one in this draft. Two even….thats like a dream for me.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I hate to say can’t lose

but it’s there for them if that is what the teams priority is

the thing about this FO though is they do play their cards close to their chest

      so who knows….

but this draft has a much of quality OL and if they view a guy like JPJ as somenone with potential to play all 5 positions – it makes this draft even better at OL

I think if they draft OL in round 1 – that guy will play OG and then either swing outside to OT or swing inside to center eventually

so that gives us a lot of flexibility

    Phish,

I’ve lived my life being blind in my right eye and am right handed. It’s not that hard to learn to shoot offhandedly. I’m guessing you’ll pick it up quick. Did you not train for that in the military? I guess I just assumed that’s a thing. I’m not bright. Lol

  39. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I decided not to do “a” final mock draft. I decided to do final mock draft on every site that has one I can find. lol

  40. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,

I can’t shoot a damn thing right handed. I can’t see down a gun or cue with my right eye, so it’s just not an option unless I do some funky contortions. Lol

Try this again. I’m posting the most ridiculous so far as far as simulator sites go. This one throws about 6 trade offers at you every time you are on the clock. I had to tell myself “That’s enough!” I would have had to make roster cuts just so I could sign all the draft picks if I had kept going. I drafted EVERY position except Long Snapper. LOL

In previous years, when we had multiple day 1 and day 2 picks it seemed we didn’t put as much effort into each pick, in years when we had less early picks we did

Here’s to keeping that trend going

  60. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Many Broncos fans want them to draft QB Bo Nix who wears #10. They still might. Broncos trade for QB Zach Wilson and all the fans who bought #3 Russell Wilson jersey’s wanted Zach Wilson to take #3 so they wouldn’t have to buy new jersey’s. Instead, Zach Wilson takes #10, the number Bo Nix would want.

Nothing like getting a new start and pissing off your fans right off the bat. lol
