With the 21st Pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Chop Robinson, EDGE

The Dolphins first pick was made and it was a good one. I was definitely hoping we would choose an edge rusher. O-line should definitely be the next priority, but I felt EDGE was our top need. To be honest, it wasn’t Robinson that was my first choice. He wasn’t my second choice either. I was hoping Laiatu Latu fell, or Jared Verse, but as it happens, neither of them made it to our pick, but the need was still addressed. So for that I’m pleased. Brian in NY and M both both watch Penn State religiously, and Brian vouches for Chop, so I’m cool with that. What worries me is his lack of sacks at the college level, but he has what you can’t teach, maybe the most impressive burst in this draft class, and tremendous closing speed. Hopefully, the rest is coachable, and that results in a lot more production at the pro level. He’ll be ready to go right out of the chute, and they will use him in favorable situations.

We’ve discussed it here so many times, but the truth is we have no idea what the timetable is for our 2 OLB’s, Bradley Chubb (ACL surgery) and Jaelan Phillips (Achilles surgery), so therefore I felt, and the Dolphins brass also felt that OLB was as much as a priority as the O-line. In addition, the depth quality at EDGE is nowhere as deep as the O-line is, so I think we can still land a quality OL at #55. Players like, Zach Frazier OG Cooper Beebe, Christian Hayes, and Zak Zinter could help us now and down the line. One thing though about our first pick Chop Robinson though is that he will probably be a rotational player and used at multiple positions to maximize his skills. While that’s good, it’s also going to put a lot on his plate, so hopefully he’s up for that challenge. The comparison for Chop is Micah Parsons, but as one NFC scout said :

“I get the comparison to Micah Parsons, but I think Parsons was a little more polished as a football player when he came out. Chop is still a little green.” – NFC national scout

Another thing to consider is how much longer is Bradley Chubb with the team? This is his 2nd ACL surgery, and not that ends any NFL player’s career these days, I mean Frank Gore had 2 ACL surgeries before he got to the NFL, and he played 16 seasons and rushed for 16,000 yards. Chubb’s dead cap hit will be high in ’25 and in ’26, but it’s still possible he’s gone after this season or next, and of course Jaelan Phillips had his 5th year option picked up, but we saw Christian Wilkins walk, if Phillips has a great season this season and we haven’t already given him an extension, that could go poorly for us like it did with Wilkins.

As I’ve previously mentioned, the flux on the O-line is real, there are a lot of players that are here on one year contracts, so we need to find some players that will be here for a while, so I very strongly feel our next pick will be for the O-line. Sure, we could use a Safety, we could use another WR, a RB who runs with a nasty demeanor and has a little power to push the pile on short yardage plays and more. With the addition of TE Jonnu Smith, I put the priority low for TE. If Weaver follows suit from Ravens DC Mike McDonald, the safety position is important as he likes Swiss Army knife guys that play in multiple positions, so at some point in the draft I’d expect a safety to be chosen by us. Oregon State’s Kitan Oladapo who is a big Safety 6’2 216, more like a SS, but could due to his size play a little LB and excel in pass coverage against a TE. Utah’s Cole Bishop is another longer player who can also potentially cover a TE. Everyone’s favorite here thoough is Iowa’s Cooper DeJean, who is listed as a CB, but has Safety potential in the NFL. Don’t be surprised if Grier trades back either, considering once again, the huge gap between our picks from RD2 – RD5, over a 100!

Dolphins sign USF basketball player Bayron Matos, 6’7″ 313 pounds from the Dominican Republic as part of the International Player Pathway program.

He has never taken a snap in a college football game.

    Only UDFA signing so far.

    For whatever this is worth

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we did get good value, there’s a decent chance everyone except Paul and the wr that doesn’t make the 53 gets decent PT

Paul could play inside and at least he should be the Armstrong heir apparent

the other wr should go to PS, where he could make a future Fins 53

we seemed to have drafted our BPA and they’re at positions of need

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

went back and watched Kamara, he’s soft sometimes, but he does have the quick twitch first step, see him as a situational pass rusher this year, he’ll need to get in the weight room going forward

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Douglie Dowrong says our picks today were mostly great value, at 120 he was #68 on the big board, others similar value

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

LB Curtis Jacobs and OT Ethan Driskell both to the Chiefs.

    Fuck I hate them.

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    OG Javion Cohen to Browns

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Barry Jackson

Hawthorne now tells me that there was a mix-up and Williams is joining the Raiders. Here’s what happened: A veteran Dolphins front office official left for the Raiders. Williams camp thought they were talking to Dolphins on the phone tonight, but the guy now works for the Raiders and that wasn’t clear to them. Williams camp called Dolphins for clarity and Fins offered a camp invite. Raiders offered a full contract, and thus he opted for Vegas.

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

hope this isn’t are typical season where all but 1 rookie sees the field

another reason why we’ve sucked at the end of seasons

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Mark Perry, S, TCU – per Barry Jackson

    • Several teams were interested in Perry after the draft, with the Dolphins winning a bidding war by offering him a $15,000 signing bonus and $150,000 guaranteed
  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Storm Duck, CB, Louisville – per Tom Pelissero

    • Dolphins clearly wanted to sign Duck. They gave him a $20,000 signing bonus and $150,000 guaranteed with multiple members of the front office calling him to recruit him to South Florida, according to Barry Jackson.
  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ohio State OG Matthew Jones was a good pickup with ZERO sacks allowed in 1879 snaps at LG and mostly RG.

In 2021 as a junior Jones saw action in 11 games and totaled 459 snaps. He gave up 6 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, and no sacks while playing the majority of his snaps at left guard, and the rest at right guard.

In 2022 as a senior Jones saw action in 11 games and played a total of 658 snaps for the Buckeyes. He allowed 4 QB hurries, one QB hit, and no sacks while playing at right guard.

In 2023 as a fifth year senior Jones saw action in 12 games and played a total of 762 snaps for the Buckeyes. He allowed 4 QB hurries, one QB hit, and no sacks while playing at right guard.

    • WR – Je’Quan Burton, FAU
    • TE- Hayden Rucci, Wisconsin
    • OT – Andrew Meyer, UTEP (unconfirmed)
    • OT – Bayron Matos, USF
    • OG – Matthew Jones, Ohio State
    • EDGE – Grayson Murphy, UCLA
    • DT – Leonard Payne, Colorado
    • CB – Mikey Victor, Alabama State
    • CB – Storm Duck, Louisville
    • DB – Isaiah Johnson, Syracuse
    • S – Mark Perry, TCU
  17. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Andrew Meyer is not an OT. He was the starting center at UTEP (31 games).

  18. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ryder did a breakdown on Kamara 3 days ago right before the draft.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It seems to me we think we’re good on the interior OL and DL. Competition on the Edge, at RB and 3rd receiver were definitely prominent in this draft. We added a tackle 2nd round so we have 4 now.

The offense is still evolving and already productive, the defense is being retooled with a new DC.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Remember nickel is on the field much of the time. We have to tackle better overall. But we have to disrupt the backfield and that’s what our edge and LBs are going to be asked to do. Sometimes a DB blitz. I think our DL is going to be asked to hold the fort and make a play here and there. The secondary has to be competitive and contest passes like any other secondary. We’ll see.

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

So we are adding (per PFN) via the draft and UDFA:

    Chop Robinson, Edge, Penn State

    Mohamed Kamara, Edge, Colorado State

    Grayson Murphy, Edge, UCLA

    Leonard Payne, Jr., DT, Colorado

    Patrick McMorris, S, Cal

    Mark Perry, S, TCU

    Storm Duck, CB, Louisville

    Mikey Victor, CB, Alabama State

    Isaiah Johnson, DB, Syracuse

    Patrick Paul, T, Houston

Bayron Matos, T, South Florida (basketball player)

    Matthew Jones, G/C, Ohio State

    Andrew Meyer, C, UTEP

    Jaylen Wright, RB, Tennessee

    Malik Washington, WR, Virginia

    Tahj Washington, WR, USC

Je’Quan Burton, WR, Florida Atlantic (4.36 forty)

    Gavin Hardison, QB, UTEP

    Hayden Rucci, TE, Wisconsin

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Talk about a non fit at TE. Rucci ran a 4.94 forty.

  24. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

From what I’ve read, seems like we drafted more projects in days 1 and 2 than day 3. As always, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Overall seems like we got good bang for our buck

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes, great bang on day 3, days 1 and 2 were the must haves

If Paul can somehow start at OG and play well, then we hit an HR

MM now needs to get his head out of his ass and throw these rookies into the fire, to see if they bite

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

“For me, it was just being inconsistent with my hands,” Robinson said. “I know I had the speed and the bend, but sometimes I forget to use my hands. But that’s something I’ve been working on this whole offseason, and I feel very confident because I’ve been working on this so much repeatedly and I know it’s going to be natural when it comes time to put my hands to use.”

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

it was very thoughtful for grief to take all these developmental guys in the draft this year that we won’t be able to use until the next general manager is in charge.

  28. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Malik was rated the top slot WR in this draft by Drafttek and Tahj the 5th best.

we had trouble there last year.

Tahj was the leading receiver for the QB taken first overall.

  29. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

They had the new RB rated 3rd best RB in the draft.

I only ignored him in my mocks thinking he’d be long gone by the late 5th.

He’s just as fast as Achane but 30 pounds heavier!!!!

  30. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

we signed a QB and Center tandem from the same college. UDFAs from UTEP. The center might make the PS. The QB missed a lot injured.

  31. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We signed a Safety rated higher than the one we drafted and gave him guaranteed money.

  32. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Drafttek had Chop #3 and MO #11 EDGE rushers. BOTH look like a combo of Wake and AVG on tape.

  33. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Matt Jones is the real deal at RG. Eich better get sharper.

  34. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

  36. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That is what M13 and I said yesterday. An overall average of a C+.

I don’t get why ppl don’t like our draft.

which player still on the board at 21 would’ve given us an A?

remembering how we were down to 50 year olds off their sofa at EDGE to end the last season.

Name the player who would have gotten us an A

    from the pundits above.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

probably get more positive feedback if we took Barton, JPJ or Guyton

but the reality is so many of here were talking about pass rushers

Tim and Steve picked pork chop in our mock

      3 of us picked Latu

I think some one picked verse

I think the first two picks are what really matters – everything after that is trying to find solid players – we found a lot of value in day 3

but days 1 and 2 only could have went a couple ways IMO

DL/Edge on day 1 then OL on day 2 – which is what we didn

OL and OL on both days

      or OL first then DL/Edge

you can maybe make an argument for a DB

but for the most part it was going to be OL and a defensive player to bring pressure – and after we brought the ball these DEs, it started pointing to edge

I guess you can argue the players they took are the issue – but I think that’s a trash argument

the fact that the draft was so predictable to those of us who’ve been watching this team for decades shows that the Dolphins have a plan

and having a plan is much different than we’ve seen in the last 20 years

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

i think it was BBM, that mention going DL first, because OL was deeper

We got the last of the top tier at E (huge hole at start of season) we got a project for LT (we have a year to groom him) others might be more polished, but don’t have Patrick’s upside

We got a 3rd down blocking back (big hole)with speed, that could be a lead back

Another E with a good first step, that can fill the situational PR role early

2 slot WRs #1 & #5 in draft, both productive in college, another hole filled

An S that is depth pick at another position of need

Waiting so long to take a safety leads me to believe they have other plans we haven’t been notified of, someone mentioned Needham, Ramsey may fill the 3 high safety spot at times, and Campbell for depth

We got good value at positions of need, in the right order, not sure what more you could ask for

  42. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MY fav signing, of course, was JaQuan Burton from Florida Atlantic.

THAT SAID, all of the Kool-Aid consumers would have liked Kool-Aid McKinstry from Alabama.

    —————————

MY bottom line is this. We are months away from knowing how good this class of Dolphin draftees will be. Even then, their ability to contribute on a long term basis is absolutely unknown right now. But drafting that Tower of Power from Texas A&M, young Mr. Paul, is something you HAVE to be impressed with.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

we are probably years away to be honest

we won’t really have a good idea about Paul until 2025

I think Chop/Kamara/Wright or either of the Washington brothers can make an early season impact next year but whether they can be here long term and really help us win a championship is up in the air – even if they give us a little surge early in 2024

that’s a solid group of guys who might be able to contribute in 2024

the only guy we drafted I see as a project is Paul and I kind of think Armstead gives us the the luxury of taking a physical beast who needs time. I don’t think we will rush Paul

the rest of our draft might get some playing time next year

as far as our draft and any judgments go

I don’t know if any of the players will have great success or not

but I do know that no one else knows either

what I do see now that I know now is the Dolphins executed this offseason with a plan in place

I say that bc many of us knew they would draft the Edge/OL like they did

it became obvious bc of the moves they made

I don’t remember seeing that sort of plan for the last few decades following this team

we made the playoffs 2 years in a row

we have a FO with a plan and a GM with a great relationship with his coach and they are executing on their plan for this team

    Will it work?

    I don’t know

but I know no one else knows either

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We go as Tua goes, he’s not going to adlib you to death like Mahomes or Allen, so you have to get him at least adequate help

They thought Hill and Waddle couldn’t both be doubled, but they were

With weak play from the slot and TE at key moments we struggled, add in all the injuries and we had no chance

2 years ago the Ravens had their share of injuries and struggled, dangled was Jackson for anyone to take, but they added weapons and thrived, they didn’t blow it up

  45. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Naples, it’s not that people don’t like the picks. I think it is the fact that they are considered developmental projects, Paul more so than Robinson. It’s all about the draft site really. Some will say Chop was a steal at #21. Some will say he was a reach, 10 spots early. Most will say Paul was taken 10-15 spots early but if you look at who was left at #55 they really took close to BPA.

Going back to what I said yesterday, Dolphins were targeting Edge and OT to replace Chubb and Armstead/Lamm. They took BPA’s in those positions with both picks. They had to. Trade downs could have cost them to miss out on those players.

They could have taken LT Morgan or RT/LT Guyton at #21 but there was a huge drop off in Edge after Robinson. They had to go with Robinson. When trying to trade back up, it was likely for Morgan or Guyton with an outside chance it was Worthy. Judging by the 2 late round WR’s taken, it have very well been Worthy. We may never know.

They needed a LT and got the best one available at #55.

  46. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t put too much stock into draft grades. I don’t feel I know more than the team scouting department/GM/HC. I sure don’t think talking heads and pundits know more.

Re-drafting a draft from 3 years ago is all the rage, and there are always teams that get questioned in the moment that are proven right down the line.

It doesn’t mean our FO guys are always right, obviously, but the way I look at it is we the fans can be pretty accurate identifying needs and if the team appears to be on the same page with the positions they draft, then we’re doing alright. The actual players chosen, we’ll discover what they have.

This draft, oline and dline were the immediate needs. That is the direction we went at the top. Hopefully, we got the right guys.

And we have Storm Duck now, so go ahead and hold his beer, Ha ha Clinton-Dix. 🤣

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In general I just pass by draft grade columns or videos, just someone spewing their agenda

Seattle got clobbered one year for reaching, then the season started and those reaches kicked ass, Bruce Irvin was one reach

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep, I remember that Seattle draft. That particular draft is one that often comes to mind when I read pundits giving grief to teams. Houston and Mario Williams is the other.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The thing about draft grades they are about the now and how that player can contribute this season. Some of the sites will actually do an updated draft grade a year later based on the players development.

  47. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I checked half of the rosters 2 teams have OGs listed at 6’7 and most teams had a 6’6 OG

Height won’t be a reason Paul doesn’t play OG this year

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I looked at Storm Duck a while back when looking at late round DB’s. He seems more like a decent safety prospect than a CB. Opposing teams had decent QBR’s against him every year. He’s built like a safety and tackles well. Watching him, he is always right there in coverage but seems to give up just enough for the WR to make the catch then he follows up with a solid tackle.

From draftbuzz: “Very aggressive attacking receiver blocks and tackles like a safety.”

  49. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

All these UDFA are just agreements until actually signed. I wonder if there is a player or two we could steal from another team giving them a better offer (small signing bonus or guaranteed money).

We did it with two of our UDFA offers already.

  50. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t see Paul beating out any of our vets at the OG positions.

  51. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

so what is the deal with Connor Williams

is he retired or contemplating it? What is going on with him

imagine if we had a healthy Connor Williams to play OG

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Still rehabbing his injury is all I’ve seen. MF has mentioned a couple of times he thinks maybe we sign him another couple months down the road. If his rehab goes well, that could be the plan. He played OG before we moved him to C, so he’d be a perfect fit to shore up our interior. It’d be nice to have a backup plan if Brewer struggles.
