With the 21st Pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Chop Robinson, EDGE

The Dolphins first pick was made and it was a good one. I was definitely hoping we would choose an edge rusher. O-line should definitely be the next priority, but I felt EDGE was our top need. To be honest, it wasn’t Robinson that was my first choice. He wasn’t my second choice either. I was hoping Laiatu Latu fell, or Jared Verse, but as it happens, neither of them made it to our pick, but the need was still addressed. So for that I’m pleased. Brian in NY and M both both watch Penn State religiously, and Brian vouches for Chop, so I’m cool with that. What worries me is his lack of sacks at the college level, but he has what you can’t teach, maybe the most impressive burst in this draft class, and tremendous closing speed. Hopefully, the rest is coachable, and that results in a lot more production at the pro level. He’ll be ready to go right out of the chute, and they will use him in favorable situations.

We’ve discussed it here so many times, but the truth is we have no idea what the timetable is for our 2 OLB’s, Bradley Chubb (ACL surgery) and Jaelan Phillips (Achilles surgery), so therefore I felt, and the Dolphins brass also felt that OLB was as much as a priority as the O-line. In addition, the depth quality at EDGE is nowhere as deep as the O-line is, so I think we can still land a quality OL at #55. Players like, Zach Frazier OG Cooper Beebe, Christian Hayes, and Zak Zinter could help us now and down the line. One thing though about our first pick Chop Robinson though is that he will probably be a rotational player and used at multiple positions to maximize his skills. While that’s good, it’s also going to put a lot on his plate, so hopefully he’s up for that challenge. The comparison for Chop is Micah Parsons, but as one NFC scout said :

“I get the comparison to Micah Parsons, but I think Parsons was a little more polished as a football player when he came out. Chop is still a little green.” – NFC national scout

Another thing to consider is how much longer is Bradley Chubb with the team? This is his 2nd ACL surgery, and not that ends any NFL player’s career these days, I mean Frank Gore had 2 ACL surgeries before he got to the NFL, and he played 16 seasons and rushed for 16,000 yards. Chubb’s dead cap hit will be high in ’25 and in ’26, but it’s still possible he’s gone after this season or next, and of course Jaelan Phillips had his 5th year option picked up, but we saw Christian Wilkins walk, if Phillips has a great season this season and we haven’t already given him an extension, that could go poorly for us like it did with Wilkins.

As I’ve previously mentioned, the flux on the O-line is real, there are a lot of players that are here on one year contracts, so we need to find some players that will be here for a while, so I very strongly feel our next pick will be for the O-line. Sure, we could use a Safety, we could use another WR, a RB who runs with a nasty demeanor and has a little power to push the pile on short yardage plays and more. With the addition of TE Jonnu Smith, I put the priority low for TE. If Weaver follows suit from Ravens DC Mike McDonald, the safety position is important as he likes Swiss Army knife guys that play in multiple positions, so at some point in the draft I’d expect a safety to be chosen by us. Oregon State’s Kitan Oladapo who is a big Safety 6’2 216, more like a SS, but could due to his size play a little LB and excel in pass coverage against a TE. Utah’s Cole Bishop is another longer player who can also potentially cover a TE. Everyone’s favorite here thoough is Iowa’s Cooper DeJean, who is listed as a CB, but has Safety potential in the NFL. Don’t be surprised if Grier trades back either, considering once again, the huge gap between our picks from RD2 – RD5, over a 100!

TE Sanders must be shocked to still be undrafted.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

yep. There’s a few good prospects left. It’s value time. Some teams are going to get good player

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Brother, he SUCKS. Led all of NCAA TEs in sacks yielded last season. He can only be used in the slot or out wide… and he’s not nearly as good as Mike Gesicki had been in that role.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I don’t want him. We don’t need him. Jonnu is better. I just think he’s cocky and probably over-rated himself.

  8. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

IOL, safety, TE and LB are not necessarily high value positions

so it makes sense for good one to still be on the board

and forget about RB – I think we’ve only seen 1 RB take in the draft

  15. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Regarding Patrick Paul (PP)…

He’s logged 2,643 snaps since 2021, ALL from the LT position

5 sacks yielded, 7 hits yielded, and 33 hurries yielded. EXCELLENT!

He was also the #50 ranked run-blocking Tackle in the ’23 college season, via PFF.

Again: HE’S ONLY EVER PLAYED THE LT POSITION, and he’s got a monsterous reach with his arms as a Tackle should have.

  20. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I never hated Saban for saying he was staying then leaving. What can you do in that situation? With 2 months left in the season, say “yeah, I’m out of here.”. He should have been a little more tactful instead of bald face lying, but I can forgive a guy for that. That is just poor PR skills. Players and coachjes do that shit all the time, they are usually just better going about it.

For me, it was the two big stories that came out after he left: him having a rule about not looking him in the eyes when passing, and the bigger one of him basically ignoring the player having a seizure to ‘maintain leadership and poise’ or whatever the f^ck it was, and just going to his office, those were the things that really put me off him.

The story about walking over th eplayer having the seizure was never disputed and seemed to have beenm corroborated, so yeah, that is some pretty fukced up shyte rigth there.

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Many of us here wanted to be sure whomever we drafted should be day 1 starters. Our picks are not that.

it’s possible Robinson could start due to the injuries but that sorta doesn’t count. We didn’t draft 2 guys who are better than the depth chart number 1 at their position which is what we all hoped for.

However the 2 new players are both certainly not at their ceiling according to the experts, so we could enjoy watching them grow into stars or at least quality starters.

Still, our draft is a little disappointing insofar as seeing immediate improvement of our team on the field.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I actually did not want guys to be drafted who were expected to start right away

Latu was one of my favorites for a few months and chop fits the identical role. So I really can’t say anything negative about that

As far as OL goes, I always thought we would draft one or 2 guys who would play at OG and then move to their real position. I’m not sure why so many people are writing off Paul’s ability to play OG but even if he can’t, we may need him at OT this year

but more importantly I don’t really think OL is plug and play like it was 10 years ago. We’ve seen it first hand here – Austin Jackson took years to come around. I think Eichenberg is on the verge

Great athletes are coming out of college. Enormous guys that can move . So I think young OL are taking a little longer bc they are so dependent on technique and have to face those great atheletes. Even though they are incredibly athletic too – I think the increase of athleticism favors defensive players early and it’s a bug disadvantage to Rookie OL

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

No one knows right now if these will start or how much they will play. It’s just pundits talking and they have no clue what it was we saw in these players and how we intend to use them

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

thank you flying pig and Hulk

I definitely see huge upside for both picks and am not sad we picked them.

both have uncoachable gifts and only need some polishing.

and both love to play and want to learn. You can see it in their interviews.

They are exactly the kind of guys we want on our team.

if we keep finding and acquiring this type,

    we’ll build longterm success.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

In general I really liked our picks. They addressed needs but also they are very athletic and likely represent BPA at the same time

  23. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    naples,

I can see why folks would suggest Paul can’t play guard, but that doesn’t mean he can’t. That’s what practice is for. He’ll get a chance to show the coaches whether or not he can. Sometimes you move a kid like this inside to guard to toughen him up a bit. It’s a much more physical job inside. It can show you what a kid’s made of too. That said, I don’t think they drafted this kid worrying about whether or not he can play guard. He’s a tackle.

  24. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

looking ahead to pick 158 …

Oladapo or Vaki or Hampton at safety

    or

    Guerendo at RB

    or

    CB Stiggers at CB

    or

Cornelius Johnson or JhaQuan Jackson at WR

  25. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I don’t think Paul can play NFL RG.

He has enough trouble with high pad level at LT,

and his worst skill is road grading,

so for that I’d rather play Rob Jones.

  26. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Naples, your first post this morning sums up how I feel. You nailed it!

Picking at 21 and 55, I was excited to see us draft some immediate impact players. Instead, we got 2 talented developmental boom or bust prospects.

I like the potential of Robinson much more than Paul. Talking heir to Armstead but I think it will take Paul a couple seasons like it did with Jackson to develop. I hope I am wrong.

  28. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

in Grier’s defense #21 is a non sweet spot to pick. All the guaranteed can’t miss guys are gone. So at that point the next tier all have that one thing that kept them out of the Top Twenty.

Some are a step slow or have too short arms or stiff hips… not enough to ruin them … but still a flaw that’ll keep them from being all pro.

or they lack experience or polish. I’d much prefer the flaw of a guy at 21 to be that to a physical or personality flaw.

We were hoping all those QBs going might’ve pushed down a potential star to us who is actually a better player than say Nix or Penix in this year’s class.

and maybe it did. I’d certainly rather have Chop than Bo.

But the key word is potential. I respect Grier for picking a guy whose flaw is he hasn’t yet played up to his physical gifts.

That way maybe we can coach him up and have something special since his size speed flexibility and even IQ and motor are not going to hold him back from continuing to improve.

He’s even one of the youngest in the draft class, so as he finishes becoming a grown man, he could be a really nice pick.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think you could say that in some drafts, but 6 QB’s went in this one before we picked, which left 15 position players up for grabs

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Also, as per usghe, Grier may feel more comfortable with our roster pre draft than we do, which allowed him to swing for the fences a little more, rather than taking mid floor, mid ceiling players. He took two potentially high ceiling players.

  30. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

typically in day 3 you can find good IOL, Safeties, tight ends and Linebackers

these are good rounds to pick up players at the positions that are not the premium positions in the nfl

so I’m hoping we are looking in that direction

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The trend in the NFL now is to draft physical talent instead of focusing on experience or technical ability. Phillips was the same as Chop. Limited production. High physical ceiling. Get them in. Coach them up. Use them for a few years and move on.

  32. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I hated the Pmix pick

but the falcons got both Ruke Ohrororo and Brandon Dorlus on thr DL

  33. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MR. SPIKES; I, TOO, am still pissed that our owner cost us TWO high picks!! Ross’s arrogance regarding NFL regulations has cost us more than we’ll ever know. And his arrogance has certainly caused some free agents from wanting to join our organization.

FOR MANY YEARS I have ripped the CHEATRIOTs’ organization for bending and BREAKING NFL policies and regulations. But, to tell the truth, the Dolphins’ organization has also been guilty of several transgressions, some of which we know about and some of which have yet to come out of the closet.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The Dolphins WILL NEVER GET TO, MUCH LESS WIN, ANOTHER SUPER BOWL as long as Steve Ross is calling the shots.

  34. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think them saying they just took the BPA on their board on both picks is a little BS. I think they took BPA for a specific position. I believe they came in to the draft knowing they need to replace Chubb, Armstead and Tyreek to keep the train going.

I think they wanted an Edge so they can move on from Chubb and his 30mil per year contract after this season. We only have 8.8 mil in cap space next year and we have to extend Tua and Holland (the 5th year options on Waddle and Phillips are already reflected in the cap for 2025). We will also have to replace all these players here on 1 year contracts.

The top 3 Edge were gone. They turned down 5-6 trade offers, one of them had to be a decent offer. There was a run on edge after the top 12 picks and they were afraid on missing out on Robinson as there is a drop off in edge after him. They probably had a higher grade on Robinson than they did on OT Morgan, OT Guyton and WR Worthy.

I also think those three I just mentioned were the reason they tried to trade back up into the 1st.

They couldn’t get back there and missed out on all 3. Their replacement for Tyreek was gone and no other WR’s of that caliber are left in the draft. What was the next area of need OT. Armstead and Lamm have both verbally said this is their last season. We needed a LT. There was no sense in trading back up anymore as Paul was ranked as a late 2nd to early 3rd round pick but the was best LT left in the draft.

Again, they didn’t trade down for fear of missing out on the next best LT. I do think it was a smart move in that after we took Patrick Paul, EIGHT more OT’s came off the board by the end of the 3rd round.

I do 100% think they were trying to draft BPA in 3 specific areas of need.

  35. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t see why Paul can’t play OG, he seems more suited to play in a phone booth at this stage, and he’s a mauler in tight quarters, so I agree with Pig

  36. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

This was a very top heavy draft, to me. After the first 20 or so, it was a pick ‘em. Lots of 3-5th round guys in the position groups I looked at.

  37. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Looking at MMs record he’s much better the first half of the season, these 2 rookies need to develop in season to be ready for the stretch run

Sure Chop will likely start the season if both Phillips and Chubbs are out, but he doesn’t have to be great day 1

  42. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    Qb ?? 😎

  43. Randy's avatar Randy says:

To me, this is Grier’s MO. He has made many draft or FA choices where he took a guy who was underdeveloped but had a higher ceiling, theoretically. Is it just me, or does he tend not pick the typical 4 year starter, team captain, big production sort of guys. I’m not saying he doesn’t do both, but his tendency seems to be the former. I can’t say I pay attention to Grier much but that’s my sense.

  44. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I guess that’s our obligatory speed guy

Looks a lot like Mostert to me

  50. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Wright – Achane – Mostert

    slowest time is 4.38

  51. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I love this pick. Basically cost us nothing to improve the average speed at RB. Those get nicked a lot. Very young guy. Fresh legs. Can score from 99 yards on in.

Mostert’s eventual replacement just like Paul is Terron’s.

  52. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MANITOBA; I WANT TO see your Jets advance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Best of luck to your home team.

  53. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

GRIER’S SELECTION of Wright seems like a reasonable risk. But Grier failed to address other needs on the defense and the offensive line. And THAT might prove to be a BIGGER RISK.

SO I’M NOT CONVINCED that Wright was the right selection. And I’m not convinced that ignoring those other pressing needs is best for the team.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

we still have picks left – you got to play the board and take the value where it’s at

since we took wright there’s been more than 20 picks and only 2 have been OL. We pick agains in 17 picks – so odds are we are picking the same caliber of Ol in the later rounds then we would have been with that 4th

but we don’t have a shot at wright any later – bc that speed is coveted

  54. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

if a guy on d just leans wrong,

our top 3 RBs will blow by and take it to the house.

  55. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

one of the best players left on the board is Leonard Taylor from UM

he’s kind of plagued by inconsistency at Miami – but he flashes from time to t,e and might be very good as part of a rotation

also safety Kitan Oladipo is still there – and I know some people here like him

not sure we take OL in the 5th either

  83. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

good call Bri and MF … that gives us 2 young backup pass rushers to develop. Kamara ALSO has that low slashing rip to the QB like Wake. This is a great pick for us and fills a need with another ascending player who also loves the game and is coachable

    and FAST

  89. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

PS: Drafting ONE offensive lineman is NOT ENOUGH to plug THREE gaping holes in our O-Line.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have other OL on the roster. We rushed for over 2,000 yards last for the first since 2009. Tua also threw for over 4,600 yards and was sacked only 29 times which was less than 2 per game.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

INSTEAD of selecting Patrick Paul (and this is now only in hindsight), I would’ve traded down from R2P55 and selected Kiran Amegadjie at T and then Christian Haynes at G with the recouped 3rd rounder via the trade down.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But they chose Paul rather quickly. There was still over 2 minutes on the clock when the selection was in.

He’s fast, but he is developmental for sure. It’s not just Mostert and Achane, but Brooks as well, that Wright will sit behind (Wilson is different kind of back, but Brooks when healthy showed he deserves touches.

But they chose Paul rather quickly. There was still over 2 minutes on the clock when the selection was in.

This is true. Let’s hope we don’t live to regret the decision. Too early for me to call it and Paul will be given the chance to prove his worth. However, I don’t see Paul being a day 1 starter… we could have just as easily selected Christian Haynes instead and had a day 1 starter at RG.

I agree with most here who see Paul as developmental replacement for Armstead. (Austin Jackson looked like a bust … until he WASN’T …)

Anybody else see Chop as a possible replacement for Chubb … Armstead $$ woud be gone, if a replacement is ready behind Chubb, finding a way to move on from his contract would clear a lot of payroll they’ll need if they give Tua his bag.

If we want an atheletic FREAK at Safety, look no further than Tyler Owens. He needs work, but he’s got incredible potential. I’d take him this late.

If we want a decent prospect who will need some work at DT, Leonard Taylor is who I’d take.

Also, Beaux Limmer and Dylan McMahon are still available as Centers. Both fit our scheme.
