Dolphins Training Camp Notes

Dolphins began training camp July 25th, and it will continue through to August 5th, just 3 days from now. There have been some good stories, and we all hope those story lines continue all the way through to the season. One in particular has been OLB Quinton Bell. Bell, 6’4 250 began his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, then played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022. He spent last season on the Dolphins practice squad. I believe he flashed some last year in camp as well, but it would be a wonderful thing if he became a solid depth player. After OLB Shaq Barrett unexpectedly retired, the Dolphins wasted no time reuniting with DE Emmanuel Ogbah. I stress that Ogbah is primarily a defensive lineman, DE specifically, and his 5.5 sacks were mostly from the defensive line, playing with DT or DE. We addressed the OLB spot in the draft, twice to be exact with our first pick, #21 OLB Chop Robinson and then again in RD 5 #158 Mo Kamara. We’re all aware that both OLB’s Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips are rehabbing from injuries suffered near the end of the season, so when either both of these players are back to being themselves in unknown.

CB Kader Kohou is another player having a nice camp. With the offseason addition of CB Kendall Fuller, and the fact that Jalen Ramsey is on the roster as well, Kohou will likely see more playing time inside at nickel. Nik Needham, also one of my favorites as is Kohou, just wasn’t back to the level of play before his injury. Some bad news, CB Cam Smith went out with an injury but should be back. WR Erik Ezukanma, who showed that physical nature on some run plays last season was also injured, and his status is more questionable than Smith’s, who again should return to action as soon as today.

An interesting development recently came out about the NFL rules going forward in 2024, and this rule specifically affects our team, as well as the SF 49ers and the LA Rams. The rule seems to indicate that the motion that we use so often pre snap with Tyreek Hill running and then angling towards the line of scrimmage will no longer be allowed. Mind you, this is still somewhat speculative, the rule was highlighted in red, as all rules that haven’t been enforced properly are every single season. Supposedly, there was a gray area in the interpretation of “abrupt” motion, so if they do enforce this, we’ll see how Mike McDaniel counters this being taken away. I was actually surprised when I saw the Dolphins implementing it, it did look unfair, and then I thought “Why doesn’t every team do this”? I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

WR Jaylen Waddle has had a great camp. He’s been catching passes and getting open on any and every defender, including our own superstar, Jalen Ramsey. That’s important, because there might come a time in the next couple of years if Tyreek Hill is still with the team, that Waddle becomes the main target, and Hill the #2 WR. It would be fantastic if Waddle can step up to another level. New C Aaron Brewer had some low snap issues, but otherwise has looked good. I’m sure we all remember the snapping issues our previous C Connor Williams had, right? Still, we want to se that cleaned up by seasons start.

Another nice camp story is the emergence of LB Anthony Walker, who played 4 years for the Colts and 3 for the Browns, and at 28, is showing well as a inside LB for the Dolphins. Walker battled injuries last season and is happy to have a fresh start with the Dolphins. The battle at NT has been a good one between NT Benito Jones and NT Teair Tart. CB Ethan Bonner has also impressed in camp, and although Bonner is behind Cam Smith and Kendall Fuller on the depth chart, that could change for sure.

One point I want to bring out, we’ve discussed it already, but it really resonated with me. CB Jalen Ramsey stating “It’s time to be bullies”. I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear that. Sometimes you just have to get it out there, and it can manifest itself into something real. I don’t have to tell you that when a lot of people think about our team, the word “soft” comes to mind. If thinking they’re going to be bullies helps purge the softness, so be it. I couldn’t agree with Jalen more. Purge that December swoon, purge it before it starts. Think of yourselves as the bad boys, and then play like it on the field, and punish teams like the Ravens, Steelers, Chiefs, etc. Smack them in the mouth and let them know you’re on the field right there with them. Keep feeding this mentality, make it so!

Though several Dolphins writers said Poyer was walking with a limp today, what is actually sidelining him, per his wife Rachel Bush (on X), is a thumb injury, FYI. He has missed 6 practices in a row; was excellent before that.

Sources: The Steelers have a verbal agreement in place with the 49ers for Brandon Aiyuk. All the terms of the deal and contract details are being hammered out now. The WR is coming to Pittsburgh.

If they get good QB play.

    ————–

Between Russ and Fields, they undoubtedly will be better than last year’s QB room.

I just looked at last year’s stats. Russell Wilson is still a top-10 QB in the league and rumors of his demise have been greatly exaggerated. He was even tied for #1 last year with four 4th Quarter comebacks.

I’ve heard the same, in all honesty. If I’m not mistaking, I think(?) Russ has been nursing an injury of sorts. That’s going to be an interesting competition!

That’s all the info we already knew, he’s just adding in the $23.1M fully guaranteed for this season which is the 5th year option

    Hulkster,

It’s all good to disagree(!), my man! I want to share this with ya, being you’re a cat lover like I am. I had a very horrific day last week, from work to bad family health news. I felt so dejected, depressed, and certainly angry.

My nephew’s cat (he may as well be my cat at this point, too) greeted me, and immediately sensed my discouraged state of mind. That little bugger went way out of his normal ways to console me, comfort me, and just to let me know that he’s my bud! It was SO fascinating and SO heart-warming, man!

He put me back into a good frame of mind. It’s AMAZING how our pets can sense our distress and go out of their way to console us!

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m done with Berrios, his only quality left was Punt Returns, and even that seems in question with Malik returning punts yesterday seems a better alternative

also done with EZ, his potential YAK and running ability were needed, Jonnu has now taken those duties over and looked great yesterday doing so

That leaves us with Hill, Waddle, OBJ, Cracraft and Malik only 5 is what I’m thinking, and Achane will line up wide also

unless Fortson is a gamer he seems lazy/uninspired, Jonnu and Hill are locks, I’d like to see Tanner make it and Smythe likely will too much to my dismay (think he’s useless)

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

For me Jonnu, Tyreek, Achane and Calais (drills and overall stature, he looks the part) stood out the most

Malik and Wright looked good on a secondary level

Sanders made all his FGs and Bailey, oh my, with those booming punts seems finally healthy

    Stanger needs a new jersey

Didn’t watch the D, too hard to tell who was who

Penix is taller than I thought, funny he also wears 9, could be twins with Jonnu, they both look tall, speak and athletic

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Funniest play in practice was 1v1 Tyreek shook the defender at the line and ran free for an easy pitch and catch, huge mismatch

Glad to see you decided to stick around. I wouldn’t know what to think about every single draft eligible player every year without you! Besides, this place needs as many rednecks as we can get. 😜

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Thanks Randy! I was having a tantrum that morning but I wasn’t going anywhere.

I got news about a real-estate deal that was going to fulfill a lifelong dream of mine fall through that morning. We were supposed to close within days then the owner decided to pull out of the deal because of his POS son.

He’s a religious man. His son was using it for a hunt camp. He went up there this past hunting season and caught his son and his buddies getting drunk with a bunch of women and cheating on their wives.

It’s a beautiful property of 67 acres bordering state forest with 2 small older homes. A 2 BR home on the main road as you enter with a small shop. The main drive winds through 2 fields of pecan trees then a pole barn. Before you get to the main house there is a 2 acre pond on the right and a 1 acre pond on the left. Once you get to the main house there is a 5 acre lake behind it full of crappie, bass, etc.

Then it is just woods behind the lake with 3 nice food plots along the border of the state forest.

I was going to have to put a ton of money into it. Both homes need to be gutted and both new septic but it was the land I wanted. The main home is about 100 years old. My fear is it would be a total rebuild.

Anyway, it’s just on the outskirts of the Alabama Gold Belt and the son has convinced the dad there is still gold on the property. It had already been mined way back which is the reason for the ponds/lake. The property has been in their family for 80 years and they have never looked into it or even surveyed it. It’s BS.

There is still an outside chance but I bet he comes back asking for more $$. Some things are not meant to be, I guess.
