Dolphins Training Camp Notes

Dolphins began training camp July 25th, and it will continue through to August 5th, just 3 days from now. There have been some good stories, and we all hope those story lines continue all the way through to the season. One in particular has been OLB Quinton Bell. Bell, 6’4 250 began his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, then played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022. He spent last season on the Dolphins practice squad. I believe he flashed some last year in camp as well, but it would be a wonderful thing if he became a solid depth player. After OLB Shaq Barrett unexpectedly retired, the Dolphins wasted no time reuniting with DE Emmanuel Ogbah. I stress that Ogbah is primarily a defensive lineman, DE specifically, and his 5.5 sacks were mostly from the defensive line, playing with DT or DE. We addressed the OLB spot in the draft, twice to be exact with our first pick, #21 OLB Chop Robinson and then again in RD 5 #158 Mo Kamara. We’re all aware that both OLB’s Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips are rehabbing from injuries suffered near the end of the season, so when either both of these players are back to being themselves in unknown.

CB Kader Kohou is another player having a nice camp. With the offseason addition of CB Kendall Fuller, and the fact that Jalen Ramsey is on the roster as well, Kohou will likely see more playing time inside at nickel. Nik Needham, also one of my favorites as is Kohou, just wasn’t back to the level of play before his injury. Some bad news, CB Cam Smith went out with an injury but should be back. WR Erik Ezukanma, who showed that physical nature on some run plays last season was also injured, and his status is more questionable than Smith’s, who again should return to action as soon as today.

An interesting development recently came out about the NFL rules going forward in 2024, and this rule specifically affects our team, as well as the SF 49ers and the LA Rams. The rule seems to indicate that the motion that we use so often pre snap with Tyreek Hill running and then angling towards the line of scrimmage will no longer be allowed. Mind you, this is still somewhat speculative, the rule was highlighted in red, as all rules that haven’t been enforced properly are every single season. Supposedly, there was a gray area in the interpretation of “abrupt” motion, so if they do enforce this, we’ll see how Mike McDaniel counters this being taken away. I was actually surprised when I saw the Dolphins implementing it, it did look unfair, and then I thought “Why doesn’t every team do this”? I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

WR Jaylen Waddle has had a great camp. He’s been catching passes and getting open on any and every defender, including our own superstar, Jalen Ramsey. That’s important, because there might come a time in the next couple of years if Tyreek Hill is still with the team, that Waddle becomes the main target, and Hill the #2 WR. It would be fantastic if Waddle can step up to another level. New C Aaron Brewer had some low snap issues, but otherwise has looked good. I’m sure we all remember the snapping issues our previous C Connor Williams had, right? Still, we want to se that cleaned up by seasons start.

Another nice camp story is the emergence of LB Anthony Walker, who played 4 years for the Colts and 3 for the Browns, and at 28, is showing well as a inside LB for the Dolphins. Walker battled injuries last season and is happy to have a fresh start with the Dolphins. The battle at NT has been a good one between NT Benito Jones and NT Teair Tart. CB Ethan Bonner has also impressed in camp, and although Bonner is behind Cam Smith and Kendall Fuller on the depth chart, that could change for sure.

One point I want to bring out, we’ve discussed it already, but it really resonated with me. CB Jalen Ramsey stating “It’s time to be bullies”. I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear that. Sometimes you just have to get it out there, and it can manifest itself into something real. I don’t have to tell you that when a lot of people think about our team, the word “soft” comes to mind. If thinking they’re going to be bullies helps purge the softness, so be it. I couldn’t agree with Jalen more. Purge that December swoon, purge it before it starts. Think of yourselves as the bad boys, and then play like it on the field, and punish teams like the Ravens, Steelers, Chiefs, etc. Smack them in the mouth and let them know you’re on the field right there with them. Keep feeding this mentality, make it so!

    Nice write, Mike.

It’s a new season with a bunch of new players. Let’s be bullies! 🙂

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    YES!! Let’s be bullies!

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So Jones and Tart are competing at NT. It would be great if both play well so we can rotate them.

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    — Edge rusher Jaelan Phillips was again running hard and doing rehabilitation work on his Achilles injury during practice. Phillips looks better each day and looks as though he’ll be cleared for practice soon.

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

–CB Ethan Bonner, who had a rough day Thursday, had an INT on a deep throw Tagovailoa while defending WR Tyreek Hill.

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

–WR Odell Beckham Jr was seen going through rehab work on the field during the first round of 11-on-11s. Beckham was running 40-yard sprints at near full speed and was also catching passes. He didn’t seem to have any physical limitations (limp, etc…)

  10. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    — LT Terron Armstead was running sprints during practice again. Armstead still hasn’t gone through a complete practice.

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    — QB Tua Tagovailoa wore the orange jersey Friday as the Player of the Day.

  12. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The defense had at least six offside calls. Flags were flying during practice. On back-to-back plays we saw a personal foul on a kickoff return and then a false start by the offense.

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    — Players not spotted at Friday’s practice: running back Salvon Ahmed (seen wearing boot on left leg during rehab work), linebackers Jordyn Brooks and Anthony Walker Jr., safety Jordan Poyer, cornerback Cam Smith, wide receivers Erik Ezukanma and River Cracraft.

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    –Rookie edge rusher Mo Kamara stopped RB Jaylen Wright for no gain or a possible loss on a pitch left. Kamara read the play perfectly. Wright had a 5-yard gain a couple of plays earlier;

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    –S Elijah Campbell dropped a potential interception on a pass from Tagovailoa in an 11-on-11. The pass was high but should have been caught;

“We’re excited about the touchdown celebrations. We got a couple of things up our sleeve. We just got to ramp it up, but we probably wont do it till the regular season,” Raheem Mostert.

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:
    • Tyreek Hill was not spotted early in practice. Later, Hill appeared at Dolphins practice.
    • Special teams coach Danny Crossman is engaged in conversation with seven officials here. I can guess they’re talking about the new kickoff rules.
    • Jaelan Phillips is working really hard with trainers on the side. Phillips (Achilles) is clearly making progression. He’s an incredible athlete.
    • Tua just dropped one in the bucket to Braylon Sanders. He’s so impressive in the area of accuracy and touch.
    • Tua just ovethrew Braxton Berrios for a deep touchdown.
    • Mike White was intercepted by Jason Maitre.
    • Jalen Ramsey forced Raheem Mostert to fumble and Jevon Holland recovered.
    • Edge rusher Quinton Bell continues to make an imprint on defense.
    • Twice, early in practice, Tua was under pressure and unable to find a receiver downfield so he just tucked the ball away.
    • Some chippiness, edge, aggression from Miami Dolphins D today. They seem annoyed O did well Thursday.
    • There have been too many drops from RBs early in training camp.
    • Patrick McMorris had an interception of Mike White, but it would have been negated by an offsides. Too many offsides on defense today.
    • The Dolphins added a million DTs but Da’Shawn Hand still seems squarely in the mix.
    • Defensive lineman Jonathan Harris made a few positive plays.
    • Nik Needham had a nice pass breakup in the middle of the field.
    • Ethan Bonner intercepted Tua on a deep ball for Tyreek Hill.
  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @WingfieldNFL

Weaver dials up a blitz that heats Tua up, throws to Tyreek and Elijah Campbell under cuts it but drops the pick.

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @WingfieldNFL

Coverage has been fantastic today. Safeties are seeing it and playing fast. Kader Kohou does a good job staying in phase on Waddle and prevented him from a head whip to get back outside on a deep shot from Tua that falls incomplete.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not really because he’s been really good since he entered the league. We’ll make adjustments just like some other teams will.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not sure either way. Yes, he’s great no matter what, that’s for sure, but that motion had to help some, especially getting quick separation

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh it definitely makes it tougher on defenders or we wouldn’t do it. But if it can’t be done, gotta draw up different plays.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Does anyone here think if Tyreek Hill can’t go into motion like he did last season that it might affect his play or our offense?

    _____

I say it affects our offense if the o-line isn’t any better. Most of that early release stuff was to help get the ball out quickly to mask the line’s deficiencies.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, thanks for your answer. I’m not sure, but what we do know is MM will have to find a way to make sure it doesn’t affect the offense

  26. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t think the rule change will make that much difference to the offense. We can still use motion and move people around just no more angling to the LOS

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree, and have heard MM has something else up his sleeve

I wondered why they allowed Hill to cheat forward, don’t think it will have much effect, because it’s just a split second, how much advantage could they actually get

The O player still knows what the snap count is and will move forward first

      Much ado about nothing

  27. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    playing the bully

Weaver, as said by some players, wants to use more zone

IMO playing more zone will allow DBs and LBs to run downhill and crush receivers, and guys like Ramsey to roam around and ballhawk

Will be heading to Miami on Monday for TC practice vs Falcons

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I always felt all that motion is to get defenders off their spot and get them moving and thinking.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

      There are different reasons:

      Identity the defense

      Create a mismatch

Confuse the defense and so on

      .

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah that’s what I was getting at. I don’t know that it’s about helping the OL and getting the ball out quickly. That starts with guys getting open quickly. If they don’t do that it doesn’t matter how long the protection holds up.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – If Reek is running and is getting up to speed before the defender is, that’s an advantage. It’s harder to bump a guy or keep up with him when he’s hitting his stride already before he’s at the LOS. Don’t you think so?

  31. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

MikeE/Tim, your welcome. Others chip in also.

  32. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

El SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was diagnosed with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot after Wednesday’s practice that will put him in a walking boot for two weeks, the team announced Thursday.

After the time in the boot, Herbert will be on a “gradual return to play protocol” and is expected to be ready for Week 1, the team said.

  33. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

MikeE, I think we see a lot of Patrick Paul, Kion Smith, Ryan Hayes and just a little bit of Lamm at the tackle spots. Maybe we see some of the basketball dude Matos.

As far as IOL, Wynn is out, so I think we see everyone else not named Brewer playing in PS1.

    _____

You’re talking generally in football. I’m talking specifically for our team, which is what the question was about. Our wide receivers don’t need all the motion to get open, they’re good enough on their own. Our o-line, however, needed all the help it could get.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

they go from running horizontal to vertical on a timing based system that they know when to transition but the D has to play behind. It absolutely gives, SPECIFICALLY our team an advantage. Especially with smaller faster guys. When our smaller guys start from a static position Tua sucks….

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Hard Rock Stadium practice for tomorrow has been cancelled.

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, every defender sees what Tyreek or someone else is doing in motion. There is someone there to defend him. He still has to get open beyond the LOS. No team is letting him run free. It’s definitely to get defenders moving and thinking. They don’t know where the play ultimately goes. It’s a distraction technique.

  43. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Sometimes motion has nothing to do with the guy in motion anyway. it could just be misdirection. It could be setting up a block or a zone for a different play. it might be to give your guy a moving start, but reek doesn’t really need that. Or, like in the old days, it might just be to identify man versus zone. There are lots of reasons to do motion. I think MM uses it too much. I’d like to see him go a little bit simpler in short yardage, for instance.

Did they actually change the rules about motion? It used to be that you had to run perpendicular to the line of scrimmage and couldn’t be moving forward. Guys have been doing that for a couple years now. I just assume they did away with that rule or they were just letting players get away with it.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Any eligible backfield player who changes his stance does not have to come to a complete stop prior to the snap, as long as his actions are not abrupt (false start) or forward (illegal motion).” The second sentence has always been the parameter within which “cheat” motion exists.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Officials just weren’t calling it, but they might call it now, because in their annual review of the rulebook, this was highlighted, which means it’s going to be looked at or called differently. We’ll see what happens

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

MM doesn’t use motion too much, it’s built in, so that Tua can direct

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

…a player in motion, his inability to distinguish what D is being used is why there’s so much

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They were letting them get away with it.

  44. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Toba, not only #1 but the first WR ever to get that spot but like it says, “14-year history”.

“Hill becomes the first wide receiver to grace the No. 1 spot in the Top 100’s 14-year history following a spectacular season when he flirted with Calvin Johnson’s single-season receiving record (1,964). He led the league with 1,799 receiving yards (on 119 receptions) and 13 receiving touchdowns, but a late-season ankle injury hampered his run at history. It’s well known that speed is the name of Hill’s game, and the Dolphins exploited his skill set to perfection in 2023 with an incredible metric that best describes his prolific campaign: 602 receiving yards on quick passes (time to throw is less than 2.5 seconds) of 10-plus air yards, which was 308 yards more than the next pass catcher, per Next Gen Stats. Megatron’s record is no longer an impossible feat thanks to the four-time All-Pro; the same can now be said for wideouts yearning to reach the pinnacle of the Top 100, all thanks to the Cheetah.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hill being #1 shows the poll isn’t about the most important player

I don’t blame the players, they just answered what was asked

Would any player really rather have Hill on the field with the ball and within a score and 2 minutes to play over Mahomes

  64. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The first competitive period on this day involved 11-on-11 and the offense didn’t produce many positive plays.

Tua Tagovailoa took two shots from about the 30-yard line into the end zone, but Braxton Berrios couldn’t stay in bounds on the first attempt and Tua overshot tight end Jody Fortson Jr. on the second.

  65. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Emmanuel Ogbah had a couple of nice plays, getting past Durham Smythe to quickly get to Tua on a pass play and later bursting through the line to meet Raheem Mostert after a pitch.

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There were no horrible shotgun snaps on this day, Tua bobbled one from Aaron Brewer that was at chest level, and Mike White got a couple of low ones around the ankles and one that was around his head that he couldn’t probably field.

  67. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jalen Ramsey continued his strong work in run support, coming around the edge to meet De’Von Achane in the backfield.

  68. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Calais Campbell has a run stop against Achane.

  69. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rookie fifth-round pick Mohamed Kamara was very active on this day. He met rookie Jaylen Wright in the backfield on a run. He later beat tight end Hayden Rucci at the line to stuff another run.

  70. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rookie first-round pick Chop Robinson did a good job of setting the edge on a run by De’Von Achane where he was forced to cut inside into traffic.

  71. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tackle Kendall Lamm committed a false start.

Chris Brooks had a nice run where he made a quick jump cut at the line.

Campbell got to Tua very quickly on a play that likely would have been a sack in a game situation.

Jaylen Waddle had a couple of noticeable plays, a reception on a quick slant from Tua in traffic and a touchdown catch from Mike White in the corner of the end zone in a goal-to-go period.

Skylar Thompson might have had the best pass of the day, a floater over the linebacker to tight end Jonnu Smith in the middle of the field.

Linebacker Channing Tindall had a sack of Thompson (or would-be sack) and later met Jaylen Wright in the backfield right after he caught a swing pass.

  72. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ogbah tipped a Tua screen pass at the line of scrimmage.

There were several instances on this day where Tua couldn’t find an open receiver, and this is where we point out that Hill didn’t practice and Waddle got very limited reps.

Quinton Bell had a would-be sack against Tua.

  73. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

In a two-minute period at the end of pracetice, Tua led the offense to a touchdown, thanks to a 20-yard completion to Malik Washington and a quick throw to Achane on fourth-and-1, where defenders were around the running back but Achane kept running and the officials signaled a touchdown.

On the drive, Achane had a drop and made another catch that wasn’t very clean.

Before that, Ogbah had another sack.

Mike White got the last series at QB, but the drive ended when Anthony Schwartz dropped a pass over the middle on fourth-and-6. The pass was a tad low but should have been caught.

White dropped a good shotgun snap before throwing a hurried swing pass to Jeff Wilson Jr.

Kamara had another sack on the series to cap off his very impressive day.

  74. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Nice to finally hear Mo Kamara’s name mentioned a few times.

      2 things:

No way Monaray Baldwin lasts to the 7th just because of his small stature. The guy runs a 4.24.

Most important, I had to get Jason Taylor’s son TE Mason Taylor. He is a stud and going to be in the NFL also, IMO. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him climb draft boards.

Mason Taylor is a Junior this year but I think he declares for next years draft after this season.

He’s about the same size as JT at 6’6, 253 pounds and runs a projected 4.64

Dolphins put band-aid on interior OL problem by signing Sean HarlowThis isn’t the kind of signing Dolphins fans were hoping forBy Braulio Perez | 6:00 AM EDT

While so much attention has been going to Tua Tagovailoa landing his extension and Tyreek Hill earning the top spot on the NFL 100, it’s easy to forget the Miami Dolphins still must improve up front. This team needs extra bodies to try and build depth ahead of Week 1 for the offensive line.

Throughout training camp, terrible snaps to Tagovailoa have been consistent, while the need for another guard to push for a starting job has been made obvious.Chris Grier has decided to take matters into his own hands, signing veteran guard/center Sean Harlow to a new deal. The reaction from the Miami faithful on social media shows plenty of people are underwhelmed by this move, however:

The Miami Dolphins have signed lineman Sean Harlow to a new deal

Aaron Brewer is the starting center for this team, but it’s time for him and Tua to start building some chemsitry. The snap issues have been a total headache for Mike McDaniel to deal with, but it’s not only Brewer who is having problems.

This is likely why Harlow, who recently worked out for the 49ers, was brought to Miami. The benefit here too is that he has the versatility to play either guard or center. He certainly has a bit of an uphill climb to make the 53-man roster, but a solid preseason could skyrocket his chances.

Harlow is a former draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons, but he only appeared in one game for the NFC South side. Throughout his career, he has 41 appearances to his name, with eight starts. The newest Miami signing has played in contests for Atlanta, Arizona, Dallas and the New York Giants.

The Miami offensive line is proving to be the weakest position group on this team, and certain guys are going to have to step up sooner rather than later. Harlow isn’t a standout by any means and he won’t be looked at to be that in the AFC East. However, Grier went the affordable route here hoping to find a diamond in the rough. Only time will tell if that proves to be the case.

This is the REAL conspiracy theory…lol. Grier trying to improve the OL or the belief that any ole OL will do…lol

Not sure what the consensus is around here but I love the Hill contract extension

We have a core locked up for another couple of years

This is the Tua/Waddle/Hill show now

    !🐧2🐆!

  85. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

As far as I am concerned, we have one guy to focus on in terms of contract going forward – Jevon Holland

After that we can use our draft capital to fill in the spots
I’m thinking we have to focus on OL, DB and LB in next years draft

It’s early so who knows but keeping our core and bringing in new talent in the draft is ideal
And much different than the way we have seen this team be built over the last 20 years

Maybe I can even buy jerseys with lasting power

I’m actually on year 3 of the Waddle jersey
