Preseason Game 1 – Falcons @ Dolphins

I can’t believe we’re already here, but sure enough, the football season’s first tease is Preseason Game 1. There’s not really a lot of substance one can garner from a preseason game, but as always, this is an opportunity for some players to give themselves a chance to solidify a roster spot. Most of the starters will not be playing, and if they do, it will be a short time, maybe a series or less. QB Tua Tagovailoa who was just paid a mint will not partake in this game, so it will be Mike White and Skylar Thompson at the helm. There will be many roster decisions to make when the final cutdown to 53 happens, and the QB battle could be one of those. If they decide to carry only 2 QB’s on the roster, then White and Thompson are essentially fighting for the backup job. The Dolphins chose to carry 3 Qb’s last season, but due to the heavy rotation on the D-line, and the necessity to carry a number of backups on the O-line, carrying 3 QB’s may not be a luxury the Dolphins can afford.

So who are the players to watch? That depends on who you talk to, but there are a few I look forward to seeing, and a few others who I hope have a good showing to make the roster. I’ll start on the offensive side of the ball. RB Jaylen Wright should see a decent amount of touches and it would be wonderful to see him shine. Starter Raheem Mostert, who bulked up 15 lbs last season and had a career best. I can assure you the Dolphins aren’t going to overuse the 32 year old running back, despite having a year any NFL RB would love to have, over 1000 yards rushing, a nice 4.8 YPC average, and of course 18 rushing TD’s. De’Von Achane is a HR hitter but also a guy who already early in his career has struggled to stay healthy. Achane trailed Mostert by only 212 yards with less than half the carries (103) to (209) for Mostert. Still, Achane only appeared in 11 games due to injuries. Therefore, it’s so important that rookie Jaylen Wright shows the Dolphins he can assume either role if necessary.

Other players to watch on the offensive side is basically anyone and everyone on the offensive line. While most won’t be starting, we saw last year how often the backups were pressed into service, so believe me, this counts. For position players, TE Julian Hill has been drawing lots of attention in camp, both as a blocker and receiver, so I would like to see him give us a glimpse of that. Rookie WR Malik Washington is buried on the depth chart, but a strong showing in the preseason could elevate him. Veteran WR’s Braxton Berrios and River Cracraft both have a leg up as they have so much experience, both with Mike McDaniel and of course the Dolphins offense. I don’t believe WR Erik Ezukanma is healthy, and if that’s the case and he’s unable to play, I fear his chances of making the roster are slipping away.

On the defensive side of the ball, there are quite a few guys I really want to watch. OLB Quinton Bell who’s been a hot topic all throughout training camp while impressing reporters and coaches alike. Of course rookie OLB Chop Robinson and rookie OLB Mo Kamara are guys I want to see playing well. Despite many signs pointing to OLB Jaelan Phillips potentially being ready to play Week 1 of the regular season, I always prefer to err on the side of caution, and I feel the team will as well. Bradley Chubb, on the other hand is not progressing as quickly, which makes sense since he was injured about a month later than Phillips. I also want to see ILB Anthony Walker who also has been making noise.

On the defensive line, both starting DE’s Zach Sieler and Calais Campbell won’t play, so we’ll see a fair amount of Gallimore, Mack, Hand, Harris and Kendricks. Being this is preseason, I’m thinking we won’t see much of Emmanuel Ogbah who recently signed, but if we do, I’m curious how much time he gets on the D-line, as opposed to playing OLB. I maintain he’s better suited there, but last I looked, I’m not the DC. In the secondary, don’t bet on getting our first look at S Jordan Poyer in a Dolphins uni. Do expect to see a fair amount of rookie Patrick McMorris and veteran Elijah Campbell. Marcus Maye might also get some reps, as well as Mark Perry. I think Jalen Ramsey, Kendall Fuller will sit, but CB’s Kader Kohou, Cam Smith, and Ethan Bonner, who has also turned some heads in training will get lots of snaps. Mayhaps we see Storm Duck, who at the very least has an amusing name.

As per usghe, we hope to see some nice plays, and most of all, hope for no injuries. I don’t expect a whole lot of scoring, the offense will be as vanilla and as basic as possible, and same goes for the defense. I suppose I want to see if TE Jody Fortson has even the slightest chance of making the roster, because TE could be a place we carry only 3. Durham Smythe and Jonnu Smith are locks, and the way Julian Hill has been talked up, the tall, lanky Fortson appears to have an upHill battle. I want to see how the new kickoff rule looks out there, although this morning I was listening to WQAM and both Joe Rose, and especially Mike Florio from PFT feel that it’s almost certain that kicking the ball into the endzone for a touchback at the 30 yard line is going to be the NFL norm. That’s a shame, because in general, it can be such an exciting play, especially will all the speedy options we have to deploy back there, but such is life. Maybe the Preseason will be the testing grounds. Once again, lets hope we stay healthy and have no injuries!

5 winners (and 2 losers) for the Dolphins in preseason win over Atlanta

Several players did themselves a big favor with a promising first preseason game.By Brian Miller | 7:00 AM EDT

The first of three Miami Dolphins preseason contests is in the books and several players did well during the team’s opening game of the exhibition season. Did they earn a roster spot? Maybe not yet, but they are definitely trending upward after Miami posted a 20-13 victory.

More than five players stood out against the Falcons, but we’ve decided to show these guys below some love. The list doesn’t include Jaylen Wright, but we should bring up the fact that he was impressive in his debut, posting his first NFL TD. With that said, these five players also deserve their flowers:

Winner: Tanner Conner – Conner played his best football since joining the Dolphins as a pro. Yes, it is preseason, but he was blocking well and was able to work the field and get open. He made the most of his opportunities and looked to put a little space between himself and Jody Fortson.

Winner: Ethan Bonner – Bonner is having one of the best camps of any player, and he showed fans that the hype is real. Bonner consistently made plays and was able to break his coverage to make tackles or hold up the ball carrier. Bonner may not have outright won a roster spot, but he is going to make it very hard for the Dolphins to cut him.

Winner: Storm Duck and Patrick McMorris – McMorris was drafted in the seventh round and no one expects him to make a big impact on the roster, but he made plays when he was in the game and that is all you can ask of a young guy trying to make a football team. As for Duck, the undrafted rookie was all over the field and made plays. He remains a bit of a longshot to make the roster, but his showing vs. Atlanta was a clear indication that he is going to fight for a spot.

Winner: Patrick Paul – It’s hard to look at Paul and find a reason to be remotely critical. Paul played almost the entire game, and he did very well. Using the strength in his legs, Paul was able to push defenders around, and when they were faster than him, his long arms helped keep them at bay. Paul gained a lot of experience in this one and he will get more reps in the final two preseason games while the Dolphins keep Terron Armstead off the field.

These Dolphins players had games to forget against the Falcons

Loser: Willie Snead – Snead didn’t impress anyone, and what makes it worse is that announcer Kim Bokamper mentioned that he has struggled with catching passes in practice. That isn’t something you would expect from a veteran wideout. Snead is far from a lock to make the roster and didn’t do himself any favors in his first Miami appearance.

Loser: Mike White – White came in against the deeper Atlanta Falcons roster and did nothing to show he deserved the backup job behind Tua Tagovailoa. Skylar Thompson didn’t have a great game either, but White’s game was worse. The Dolphins may need to look outside of the team to find an answer. Neither QB looked like a player fans will have confidence in should Tagovailoa go down.

Studs and duds in Dolphins’ 20-13 preseason win vs. FalconsShare this article 146 shares Adam Stites August 10, 2024 6:45 am ET

  28. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The Miami Dolphins got a win Friday night against the Atlanta Falcons in their preseason opener, but that’s not what really matters. The real draw of August games is the chance to see untested and unheralded players fighting for a job in the NFL while the starters stand on the sideline.

For the Dolphins, several players seized their opportunity.

While first-round rookie Chop Robinson was among the crowd of Dolphins players who didn’t make their 2024 debut Friday night, Miami rookies largely ruled the roost in the exhibition matchup.

Here’s who stood out most in the Dolphins’ 20-13 preseason win against the Falcons:

    ____________

    biting pups….I love it

  29. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Stud: Dolphins’ 2024 draft class

Three of the Dolphins’ seven picks from the 2024 NFL draft were out of action Friday with Chop Robinson and Mohamed Kamara ruled out, and Tahj Washington on injured reserve.

The other four showed out for the draft class on their behalf, though.

Offensive tackle Patrick Paul was a reliable left tackle and a mauler in the run game, running back Jaylen Wright averaged 5.5 yards per carry and scored a touchdown, wide receiver Malik Washington broke free for 21 yards on an end-around, and safety Patrick McMorris had a team-leading eight tackles.

  30. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Stud: DB Siran NealNeal’s night was brief, as he exited the game and headed to the locker room in the first half. But he made a quick impact Friday, recording an impressive tackle on the opening kickoff and forcing a fumble just a few minutes into the first quarter.

Neal made a name for himself on special teams with the Bills and he strengthened his case for a roster spot with his preseason debut in Miami.

  31. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Dud: Dolphins backup quarterbacks

A couple days before the Friday night preseason opener, Mike McDaniel said Mike White and Skylar Thompson were “neck and neck” in the race to be Tua Tagovailoa’s backup. That’s probably still the case, but the battle looks gloomier after their showing against Atlanta.

Thompson only managed to complete eight of his 19 passes and was lucky to only throw one interception on the night. That set a low bar, but White still couldn’t clear it.

After taking over in the second half, White completed just four of his 14 passes.A lack of reliable receiving targets (Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle both sat out) played a factor, but neither passer did much to seize the opportunity to take the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

  32. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Stud: Dolphins run defense

The Falcons managed just 2.7 rushing yards per carry Friday night and even that’s a bit of a deceptively high number that was inflated by a 21-yard quarterback sneak in the final minutes of the game. At halftime, Atlanta had just nine rushing yards on 11 attempts.

  33. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Dud: Dolphins pass rusher

There were plenty more positives than negatives about the Dolphins’ defensive performance. In addition to the aforementioned run defense, the Miami secondary was pretty sticky. If there was an issue, it was that the Dolphins edge rushers did very little to move Michael Penix Jr. and Taylor Heinicke off their spot.

Granted, the Dolphins were without Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, Chop Robinson, Emmanuel Ogbah, and Mohamed Kamara. But the players who inherited the opportunity to make plays were nowhere to be seen.

The moments when Falcons passers were pressured mostly came via unblocked blitzers and interior defensive linemen collapsing the pocket.

  34. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Stud: TE Tanner Conner

The Dolphins haven’t seen much playmaking ability out of the tight end position during the Mike McDaniel era. It’s the main reason the team signed Jonnu Smith in the offseason and added Jody Fortson too.

But it’s Conner, a third-year player who spent all of last year on the practice squad, who has made plenty of plays in training camp and was the most dangerous receiver for either team Friday night. His 43-yard gain down the right sideline was the longest play of the game and his 21-yarder was the second longest for the Dolphins too.

It remains to be seen how serious the injury was that ended his night, but Conner is making a case for a roster spot.

  35. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

If we get any production out of TE position this year, I will be ecstatic…lol

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

if we don’t get very good production I’ll be shocked and blame it on MM, but you can already see it, in practice Jonnu had special plays designed for him coming in motion and on quick screens

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree we won’t see more from Smythe than what he has given us but I do think we see more from Hill in year 2. Coming out of little Campbell University to the NFL as an UDFA, he hasn’t come close to reaching his ceiling.

  37. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I hope Conner’s injury is minor. He was balling last night, not just receiving but blocking also.

  38. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Fortson was terrible at blocking last night. He was just diving at knees and ankles where the defenders easily got around him in the couple times I saw it.

  39. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Mike White is the 9th highest paid Dolphins on the roster.

Cutting or trading him would clear 3.5 more in cap space.

We could probably sign Tannehill for that. LOL

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Seriously, I would bring him back to backup Tua after seeing what free agents are out there. Bring him back on the cheap for 2 years and let him retire a Dolphin.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

based on cap, but not 9th highest paid

we’re a good 65 deep, I see about 14 guys not currently in the top 51, that have a very good chance to make the 53

I really hate cutdown to 53, I’d like to see the practice squad be guys you can’t poach, like a minor league

  40. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think the only saving grace for RB Wilson right now is Ahmed not being able to play or practice. Wilson’s 5 carries for 7 yards was not good. He did have 3 catches with 1 drop and a TD though.

  41. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think our RB’s will be Mostert, Achane, Wright and Brooks. Brooks also played backup FB last year a few times.

  42. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Barry Jackson said: “Tannehill said recently (not about any specific team) that he would “jump whole heartedly” at the right opportunity”

After watching this new kickoff rule I’d never put a talent like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle on the field for it. It’s too physical right now.

  44. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Dolphins are preparing to spend weeks without starting center Brewer. Looks like it might be Eich at center until.

BTW, I didn’t notice and bad snaps last night.

  45. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If this all seems a bit familiar, it should. White and Thompson were a combined 19 of 30 for 189 yards with three interceptions in last year’s preseason opener.

  46. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @gregauman

Official game book shows that the Falcons had 26 total players not play tonight, while Dolphins had 40.

    40? That’s a lot

  47. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @OmarKelly

Dolphins rookie edge rusher Grayson Murphy, who was having pretty solid camp, had an immobilizing brace on his right knee. I don’t wanna predict what’s gonna happen, but pretty safe assumption that his preseason is done. Real sad face as he lingered in the locker room.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think he would’ve been cut in a numbers game, might stash him or have him come back next year after an injury settlement

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

As an excuse for our QBs, our WRs last night were a hot mess, this Snead guy was talking shit last year about Tua being soft?

all he does is drop passes, and ole`s blockers

Both White and Skylar threw into coverage often, so they can take some of the blame, neither is a fit in this O though

Skylar was great in PS his rookie year in a more suitable O

How could MM have missed this fact?

  65. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Alright, so now that I’ve read a little more about the ‘3rd QB rule’, there’s likely no chance a team will cut a third-string QB, nor need place him on the PS to be subject to poaching.

Thus, we’re looking strictly at FA QBs if we want to upgrade from our current backup QBs. Do NOT expect a decent QB to suddenly appear upon cut-downs to final 53s.

I’m watching the NFLN replay of the game. WTF man, they just arbitrarily cut out some of the game. Falcons punt, show a few commercials and the Falcons have the ball, and 4 minutes or so are off the game clock. That’s ridiculous!

  72. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Could it possibly be that we need a new strength and conditioning coach?

Chop Robinson: Mike McDaniel held Chop out of the first preseason game vs Atlanta, saying that Chop is dealing with some minor injuries and he expects him to be back “soon.”

Zeke Vanbenburgh: Left Friday’s game after only playing 16 snaps and is having an MRI on his leg.

Grayson Murphy: He went down in the first quarter with an injury and had to leave the field. He returned to the game later in the second half. After the game, he had a brace on his knee to immobilize his leg.

Jody Fortson: Left the game with a stinger, and he appears to be okay. It is nothing more than a stinger.

Tanner Connor: Left the game with an undisclosed injury; we are awaiting word on what the injury is and how severe it may be.

Aaron Brewer: An injury to his hand, the hand he snaps the ball with. Mike McDaniel said he would be evaluated “week to week.” If this is a broken hand, it will keep him out for 4-6 weeks. If it’s a finger injury, it would be less time, but if forced to wear a cast or brace, he would be unable to snap the ball and play center. This means Miami may have to shuffle their offensive line around for the start of the regular season, as Week 1 is about a month away.

Kion Smith: Went down in the 1st quarter and had to leave the game. It was reported on Saturday he has a torn ACL and his season is now over.

Isaiah Wynn: On the PUP list, there is no timeframe for return. There have been “rumors” and “rumblings” that he may start the season on the PUP list, forcing him to miss the first four games of the season.

Odell Beckham Jr: Still on the PUP list at this time, there is no word on when he may be taken off PUP and begin practicing.

Jaelan Phillips: Still rehabbing his Achilles injury and we are near the time-frame for if he is going to play Week 1 vs Jacksonville he would have to be taken off PUP and start practicing.

Bradley Chubb: Still on the PUP list and is expected to begin the regular season on PUP which will force him to miss the first four games of the season.

Jordan Poyer: He has missed the last six practices and his wife Rachel Bush went on social media and stated he is dealing with a thumb issue. No timeframe for when he will return to practice.

Erik Ezukanma: Mike McDaniel has stated this current injury has nothing to do with his injury from last season, he has yet to practice this training camp and there is no word when he will be ready to practice.

Cam Smith: He had an undisclosed lower-body injury in late July; Mike McDaniel said he would return to this training camp. Last week he participated in a few drills, but no time frame for his return just yet.

Rock – do you really believe it’s the strength and conditioning coach?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Is it just coincidence? Notice, I asked both questions

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s the nature of the sport, and I’d add that we’re being especially cautious right now, we want to be healthy late in the season and sacrifice the early season and let guys heal and rest

  74. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

is it possible that there really is such a thing as injury, prone people and our general manager just sucks really bad at picking guys who are not injury prone? Or perhaps again, our general manager has a habit of taking people who have been injured again and again and expect him not to get injured again

  76. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Rockphin,

I think it’s a lot of things and I don’t think S&T coaches can do a lot except try to mitigate the real problems a little bit. The last few CBAs gutted players working out at their primary job and focused on voluntary workout sessions. Teams cannot have more than 17 padded practices a year. With a 19-week season for terrible teams, that’s less than one a week. Players can miss OTAs with little penalty. All these changes affect the ability of player’s bodies to adjust to NFL level activity. It’s absolute bullshit that players are so much better now that the damage taken is a part of life. NFL seasons were much more violent in the past and players didn’t get injured nearly as much.

Also, playing fields are artificial which causes more injuries. Gym training is not NFL training. Lots of workout warriors get easily injured when doing things outside of the gym. Players aren’t as driven to play injured because they don’t have to now. This also means small injuries take them out for longer because no one wants them at 80% or less. McD is a player’s coach, and he doesn’t want injured players playing. The game is so much more player driven and as the NBA has shown, players only care about themselves and getting theirs. The game does not matter to them outside of personal benefit.

TL;DR- the game is so much different now and ST coaches have little impact in player health and conditioning.

I actually feel pretty good about our team. I don’t worry about the backup QB spot, I’d rather be strong everywhere else. It’s rare to have a really good backup, if we have to spend $7-10M on our backup I think it’s money wasted. I like our depth right now, and if somehow Jaelan Phillips really is ready to go at the start of the season, I think we’re in good shape. Hoping Jaylen Wright gives us that different dimension at RB, a little more physical to complement the speed and outside running game. Of course some of that starts with the O-line, and believe it or not, I think we’ll be OK there.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we gave up zero sacks against vs Atl, the Jags have 2 DEs that tallied 10 sacks with Jason Allen getting 17.5, the DTs had 1 at most

With Armstead and Jackson, they should be held in check

Game 1 I’d say we’ll be fine and the rest of the 1st half too

We have 4 quality OTs, 5 with the IRd kion

I think we’re OK too Mike

  78. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Paul and Driscoll make me feel a lot better about our OL depth, from practice and PS1

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes, Paul looks very athletic. There are times I saw him kinda leaning using his body and not his hands. That’s not going to work most of the time, and he should be using the huge advantage he has with his ridiculous arm length. Driscoll looks pretty capable

  79. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @gregauman

Updated numbers from this weekend’s preseason games. First, players held out by each team: Dolphins 40 Panthers 36 49ers 33 Lions 31 Jets 29 Ravens 28 Cardinals, Falcons, Giants 26 Browns, Bucs 25 Eagles 23 Bears, Seahawks, Texans 18 Bengals, Chargers, Titans 17 Patriots 16 Saints, Vikings 15 Chiefs, Steelers 14 Bills, Packers 13 Commanders 11 Jaguars 10 Raiders 9 (two games left today)

  80. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @gregauman

Bowles said he’s leaning toward using the third preseason game at home against the Dolphins as the one where he’ll play his starters the most.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Bowls always has that stupid smirk on his face, like he just stepped in shit and someone is bustin his bawls about it

      Makes him look retarded

  81. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

What if Colts release Flacco? They currently have 5 QB’s on their roster. I think they keep Richardson, Ehlinger and one other.

  82. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

BTW, Zach Wilson played decent today for the Broncos though Bo Nix was better.

  83. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We had 1 player go down with a knee injury and had to put him on IR.

The Falcons had 2 defensive players go down with knee injuries and had to put both of them on IR.

Lmao…I have no idea what you’re implying so to break it down for you:

Medals* won by Team USA in men’s and women’s events at the Paris 2024 Olympics

      Men’s events

      24 bronze

      20 silver

      14 gold

      58 total

      Women’s events

      19 bronze

      28 silver

      27 gold

      74 total

For medals won in mixed gender events, one medal each was attributed to men and women.
      * This chart does not include Team USA’s bronze medal in the women’s artistic gymnastics floor final that was appealed by Team Romania.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Maybe, you mean all our women are “men” so they can beat the “real” women….that’s fucked up shit, right there…lol

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Like what? You don’t know what the word competition means?

Take women’s college basketball for example, top teams destroy lesser teams at a far greater pace, than in the men’s game

40 years ago the competition in the men’s game is about where the women’s game is today with competition

In men’s international BB the world is catching up, in the women’s game not so much

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

What words are those? You dissed, imo, the fact that the US Women won more medals than men by saying the competition isn’t the same. WTF? IF that’s putting words in your mouth when you minimized the accomplishments/competition, in your own words, then so be it….lol.

I watched highlights of the game but obviously just mostly good plays from both sides. Not every snap. It appeared to be a solid first PS game for both teams getting a look at youth, depth and projects while getting into football shape.

Not sure we’ll see many key players in the PS at all.
