Preseason Game 1 – Falcons @ Dolphins

I can’t believe we’re already here, but sure enough, the football season’s first tease is Preseason Game 1. There’s not really a lot of substance one can garner from a preseason game, but as always, this is an opportunity for some players to give themselves a chance to solidify a roster spot. Most of the starters will not be playing, and if they do, it will be a short time, maybe a series or less. QB Tua Tagovailoa who was just paid a mint will not partake in this game, so it will be Mike White and Skylar Thompson at the helm. There will be many roster decisions to make when the final cutdown to 53 happens, and the QB battle could be one of those. If they decide to carry only 2 QB’s on the roster, then White and Thompson are essentially fighting for the backup job. The Dolphins chose to carry 3 Qb’s last season, but due to the heavy rotation on the D-line, and the necessity to carry a number of backups on the O-line, carrying 3 QB’s may not be a luxury the Dolphins can afford.

So who are the players to watch? That depends on who you talk to, but there are a few I look forward to seeing, and a few others who I hope have a good showing to make the roster. I’ll start on the offensive side of the ball. RB Jaylen Wright should see a decent amount of touches and it would be wonderful to see him shine. Starter Raheem Mostert, who bulked up 15 lbs last season and had a career best. I can assure you the Dolphins aren’t going to overuse the 32 year old running back, despite having a year any NFL RB would love to have, over 1000 yards rushing, a nice 4.8 YPC average, and of course 18 rushing TD’s. De’Von Achane is a HR hitter but also a guy who already early in his career has struggled to stay healthy. Achane trailed Mostert by only 212 yards with less than half the carries (103) to (209) for Mostert. Still, Achane only appeared in 11 games due to injuries. Therefore, it’s so important that rookie Jaylen Wright shows the Dolphins he can assume either role if necessary.

Other players to watch on the offensive side is basically anyone and everyone on the offensive line. While most won’t be starting, we saw last year how often the backups were pressed into service, so believe me, this counts. For position players, TE Julian Hill has been drawing lots of attention in camp, both as a blocker and receiver, so I would like to see him give us a glimpse of that. Rookie WR Malik Washington is buried on the depth chart, but a strong showing in the preseason could elevate him. Veteran WR’s Braxton Berrios and River Cracraft both have a leg up as they have so much experience, both with Mike McDaniel and of course the Dolphins offense. I don’t believe WR Erik Ezukanma is healthy, and if that’s the case and he’s unable to play, I fear his chances of making the roster are slipping away.

On the defensive side of the ball, there are quite a few guys I really want to watch. OLB Quinton Bell who’s been a hot topic all throughout training camp while impressing reporters and coaches alike. Of course rookie OLB Chop Robinson and rookie OLB Mo Kamara are guys I want to see playing well. Despite many signs pointing to OLB Jaelan Phillips potentially being ready to play Week 1 of the regular season, I always prefer to err on the side of caution, and I feel the team will as well. Bradley Chubb, on the other hand is not progressing as quickly, which makes sense since he was injured about a month later than Phillips. I also want to see ILB Anthony Walker who also has been making noise.

On the defensive line, both starting DE’s Zach Sieler and Calais Campbell won’t play, so we’ll see a fair amount of Gallimore, Mack, Hand, Harris and Kendricks. Being this is preseason, I’m thinking we won’t see much of Emmanuel Ogbah who recently signed, but if we do, I’m curious how much time he gets on the D-line, as opposed to playing OLB. I maintain he’s better suited there, but last I looked, I’m not the DC. In the secondary, don’t bet on getting our first look at S Jordan Poyer in a Dolphins uni. Do expect to see a fair amount of rookie Patrick McMorris and veteran Elijah Campbell. Marcus Maye might also get some reps, as well as Mark Perry. I think Jalen Ramsey, Kendall Fuller will sit, but CB’s Kader Kohou, Cam Smith, and Ethan Bonner, who has also turned some heads in training will get lots of snaps. Mayhaps we see Storm Duck, who at the very least has an amusing name.

As per usghe, we hope to see some nice plays, and most of all, hope for no injuries. I don’t expect a whole lot of scoring, the offense will be as vanilla and as basic as possible, and same goes for the defense. I suppose I want to see if TE Jody Fortson has even the slightest chance of making the roster, because TE could be a place we carry only 3. Durham Smythe and Jonnu Smith are locks, and the way Julian Hill has been talked up, the tall, lanky Fortson appears to have an upHill battle. I want to see how the new kickoff rule looks out there, although this morning I was listening to WQAM and both Joe Rose, and especially Mike Florio from PFT feel that it’s almost certain that kicking the ball into the endzone for a touchback at the 30 yard line is going to be the NFL norm. That’s a shame, because in general, it can be such an exciting play, especially will all the speedy options we have to deploy back there, but such is life. Maybe the Preseason will be the testing grounds. Once again, lets hope we stay healthy and have no injuries!

It was a response to mf13ss’s whacky bullshit who is by the way extremely right thinking…so rather than call him out specifically, I called out THAT “right” way of thinking…which is NOT about diversity, at all.

…keep bringing that “right” thinking here, it makes it so much fun for everyone. NOT!!!

And, you called out Lebron James for being an Olympic bearer….WTF is that? And, typical of your comments….they always seem to target diversity.

So, again, my apologies if I was wrong in your take (this time), but you’ve put it out there….own it.

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m not blaming diversity or anything today on the Olympics or the IOC, I simply stated a fact about competition and you went off

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

OK…then, I apologize. But, you have a history (imo) of not giving full kudos to women or diverse groups. There always seem to be slight of some sort in your comments and bringing in “woke” articles does nothing but fan the flames.

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Does anyone here think Isaiah Wynn will be the starter at LG in the opener?

  5. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

From my perspective (and maybe it’s naive and idealistic), the Olympics and the USA medal results, put on display the American way of life, including its diversity. This is not to be diminished or slighted.

Our system supported its athletes (hopefully, clean from drugs) via Title IX, capitalism, and a myriad of other ways to be dominant in the world. I will never apologize or minimize those accomplishments. To me, it shows how successful a free society can be….if only we could bring home the spirit of the games.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – We’ve always had the best athletes participate in our Olympics, no matter what race or religion. If it’s diverse, so be it, as long as everyone earns their spot, not put in because they’re Black, Indian, Chinese, White, gay, straight, or other. That’s what Steve is saying. Diversity but not diverse for the sake of being diverse, or diverse without merit. Basically, that’s what every university in America has right now, they allow a certain amount of scholarships for each race or ethnic background. That’s trash, just take the best students period.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Again, what are you saying? The athletes that made the Olympic team were diverse without merit? It’s nonsensical to me to to bring this up with what I stated. Absolutely, off my point! And, pushes an agenda that I did NOT bring up.

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

MikeE., I don’t think they think Wynn will be ready to start the season. I also think that was their reason for trying to move Kion Smith in to LG to see what he can do there.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – No, I’m not saying that at all! I’m saying all our athletes were the best of the best, and race, ethnicity or religion played no part as to whether they made the team. That’s how LIFE should be. Forget all this inclusiveness nonsense, just take the best candidate.

BIG NEWS! Jaelan Phillips is coming off PUP today.

Coach doesn’t expect Odell to come off PUP this week and then will be week-to-week starting next week, he says.

On OL this weekend: We have some technique principles that we’ve really taken a look at how we atrituclate and emphasize them. One of those being LOS. I saw the LOS be reset. That’s something we worked diligently at. We tried to re-framed how we articulate it to engender better

On Patrick McMorris: He’s taken the training and drill work and applied it in his game and evolved his game from the first day we saw him. Being in a pedal and breaking at a direct angle towards an eligible as opposed to rounding out of it – those little things, I’ve seen him

Erik Ezukanma will return to practice today

Tanner Conner will miss some practice time this week. Timeline not yet available on his injury.

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

You can’t scream for and demand equality or inclusion but then only support it when it favors you. The problem is that groups have begun using the victim role to get what they want. Blacks. Women. Palestinians. Jews. Gays. Jets fans. Pick a group. Once you tell everyone you want to be treated equally and then you demand to be treated special, people begin to understand that “equality” isn’t really what you’re after.

So, if you’re going to buy into the idea that a person gets to decide what sex they are…then you have no option but to allow this sort of thing to happen. To do otherwise would be admitting that you’re not really committed to the original thought. It’s either a 100% or 0. And that’s why all this shit is really just BS that most people go along with because it avoids conflict or don’t care….until they do. Like with the Olympics.

If we as a society continue to allow it…and let’s be honest…our politicians really don’t act any different than we do…then it’s not about them. It’s about us. Our biases are being brought to the fore as a Country in many ways. Are we going to continue to be a fear-based society and allow those in power to use it to control us? • Jaelan Phillips enthusiastically participated in loose ball drills, diving onto a mat at the start of practice.
    • Among the players who also appear to be returning to practice are edge rusher Chop Robinson, linebacker Jordyn Brooks and receiver Braxton Berrios.
    • Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle did some work only before practice.
    • Safety Jordan Poyer has a cast on a thumb.
    • Cornerback Cam Smith worked on the side.
    • Chris Brooks had a good inside run. He and Jeff Wilson are Miami’s best short-yardage options. Do they both make the Miami roster?
    • Tua Tagovailoa hit Tyreek Hill for a red zone touchdown.
    • Tua could not connect with Braxton Berrios on a fade.
    • Tua did connect again with Tyreek in the red zone, this time back of the end zone.
    • Willie Snead had a nice red zone grab from Tua in the back corner of the end zone.
    • Veteran left tackle Terrron Armstead participated in some team drills.

Right?!! It’s crazy to me that this has occurred already, and so early on. The only good thing is we’re currently $35.3M under the cap and we haven’t forfeited any draft picks for ’25… yet.

Bring righty tighty political bullshit to this Dolphin blog…deal with the consequences.

% of QB pressures that turn into sacks

Tua was at 18.9% in 2022, so that likely isn’t going to change much, but it’s just a stat and guys like Allen always do good, then there’s Tua, that gets rid of the ball so quick a lot of his throws don’t get pressured

Tua isn’t a QB, that holds the ball until the pressure gets there, he doesn’t have the size or arm strength to do it, Mahomes/Allen can flick it 60 yards with guys hanging on them

Just not a stat where Tua will ever fare high, but we all knew he wasn’t that type of QB

Another Siran Neal play – he undercuts an in-breaker and gets a hand on a Tua pass to Sanders and the deflection goes right into the waiting arms of Marcus Maye going back for 6 the other way

The pendulum swing this camp has been insane – almost every other day. David Long and Duke Riley shoot their gaps and get a run stuff on Achane.

Nice bounce back from the previous rep where Achane found a crease and hit the second level with a full head of steam.

Second set of 11 on 11s now…Tua just throws incomplete and high. He’s had a good session for far today tho

  69. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @WingfieldNFL

After missing Smythe high, Tua has back to back completions to Tyreek and Cracraft. Lot of reps today where the ball is out hot today. And then again, Jordyn Brooks reads/jumps it but can’t finish the pick.

  70. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @WingfieldNFL

Calais Campbell been a menace today. One snap after getting in for a pressure with Chop, he’s the only guy in the area code with a chance to make a play on a quick throw to Achane, and he beats the block and does it. Might’ve been 6 otherwise.

  71. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @OmarKelly
Chop Robinson with a super fast sack of Tua in the backfield. Tua hopped out the way and threw the ball but I seen it.

Things we love to see – Jonnu Smith the personal escort on the perimeter for Jaylen Wright. Block executed, big play secured.

  73. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jonnu Smith on a 10-yard TD run one of the coolest designed plays we’ve seen out here. Eichenberg and Smythe had key blocks in space.

Tua does a little Houdini act as a scrambler. He pulls the ball over the rusher on a side step, flees to his right, pulls up and flicks it with the wrist for the touchdown to Ezukanma. Really nice creativity from QB1.

I just came across this video breakdown of Aaron Brewer from about 4 months ago. I don’t believe(?) anybody has posted it here yet, but it gives us the vision our FO has for him as our new Center.

Yes, he’s an extremely athletic Center and great in the running game… but he sucks in pass-pro. Hopefully we can coach him up in pass-pro this season under Butch Davis.

because he does! lol I see MF13 came back with the stats to show the trend.

    ————–

LOL, that’s my wheelhouse: stats and trends. But HOPEFULLY, Butch Davis can make Brewer into a respectable pass-pro Center.

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So giving up 6 sacks and 34 pressures on 494 pass plays sucks? Do you know what he was asked to do and against who?

He also only had 3 penalties on 1050 snaps.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This is why I HOPE Butch BARRY (thank you!) can make Brewer into an effective pass-pro Center.

Yes, he’s seldom drawing a penalty (unlike Connor Williams), yet I’m hearing there’s a snapping issue (like Connor Williams).

I’m hoping for the very best out of Brewer… and now he’s nursing an injury.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think he needs to add weight. His game is quickness, aggression and technique.

PFF stats don’t always tell the whole story. The matchups aren’t the same. The assignments aren’t the same.

I highly doubt we signed him saying his pass pro sucks. Let’s give him lots of money.

At the moment he’s dealing with a hand injury and not practicing.

he seen it huh? And this mook writes for a living?

    —————–

Right and he was being a douche most of the day. Called Armstead “Bubble Boy” and went on to make fun of how many snaps he was taking.

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In our offense fast centers are ideal. Everything we do is quick. We’re not ground and pound.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Absolutely agreed! And this is why I have high hopes for Aaron Brewer. That’s why I posted the video above. I see the vision our FO has for Brewer.

All I’m sayin’… ALL I’M SAYIN’… is that Brewer doesn’t have a very good track record in pass-pro and in this pass-happy league.

It’s alright to showcase the good, and it’s also alright to showcase the bad.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And so as an observer, I take it that Tua is still going to get the ball out ASAP. That would mitigate Brewer’s woes in pass-pro.

Otherwise, I felt as though Tua could use more time in the pocket to scan for a 3rd or 4th receiver. This Offense is going to remain the same… 1st or 2nd read Tua… not that THAT is a bad thing, either.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Our Offense truly is predicated upon speed and quick reads.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

IF we can’t make it healthy to December, January, or February, none of it matters. Just a healthy observation.
