Preseason Game 2 – Commanders @ Dolphins

The Dolphins are hosting their 2nd consecutive game at Hard Rock Stadium tomorrow evening at 7PM as they welcome the Washington Commanders, who they have been practicing and scrimmaging against the last few days. One of the most interesting storylines is who plays and how much. This is a preseason game after all. Andy Reid, HC of the Super Bowl winning Kansas City Chiefs believes in playing his starters and getting them playing time so they’re ready for the long haul. Hard to argue the results Any Reid has yielded, since the Chiefs have won back to back Super Bowls. On the other hand, this is a 20 game season, 3 preseason games, and 17 regular season games. The Dolphins haven’t had an issue starting strong, it’s been quite the opposite. In 2022, the Dolphins started out 8-3, and then faded to a 9-8 finish. Last season, the Dolphins ripped off a 9-3 start, only to once again fade at the end of the season to an 11-6 record. To add, in 2022 we lost in the WC playoff game against the Bills and then again in 2023, the same result, a Wild Card loss to the Chiefs. In other words, I think HC Mike McDaniel has to be more mindful of “saving” players so they’re more likely to be healthy at the end of the season. That’s a difficult tightrope to walk, because as Rock would gladly tell you, ALL the games count.

All that being said, I do expect to see more starters play this week, and in general, more players playing. Last week there were a higher percentage of players on the 90 man roster that sat than played, I think it was around 40 total players that participated last week. That number will much higher and starters will at least see a series or two, including QB Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins made a big statement this week releasing DT Teair Tart, who some felt might be the starting NT. That spot now appears to belong to DL Benito Jones. Our rotation looked pretty solid last week against mostly 2’s, 3’s and 4’s of the Falcons. This week, they will see more starters and more of the 2nd tier linemen. Once again, picking up Calais Campbell, for less than market value was a huge get. I love Campbell opposite Sieler. You know how deeply upset the loss of Wilkins made me, but bringing in Calais Campbell was a great elixir and I feel much better about our defense. Hopefully the rotation guys continue to shine, meaning Jonathan Harris, Brandon Pili, Neville Gallimore, Da’Shawn Hand and Isaiah Mack.

The offensive roster breakdown is going to be very interesting to me. How many QB’s, WR’s, RB, TE’s and OL will we carry. We carried 9 OL last season, I’d expect the same this season. LT Terron Armstead, LG Robert Jones, C Aaron Brewer, RG Liam Eichenberg and RT Austin Jackson. Is it possible that if projected LG starter Isaiah Wynn isn’t healthy enough to play the first 4 weeks that he gets cut? LT Patrick Paul and T Kendall Lamm are locked in. It appears that T/G/C Jack Driscoll is a shoe in as well. That leaves one more spot, and don’t be surprised if it’s not Wynn. You can only wait so long, and be ever so hopeful. G Lester Cotton, T Ryan Hayes, OG’s Andrew Meyer, Seth Harlow and Matthew Jones are all available now, and that just might factor in this decision.

AS for WR, I have no idea which way this could go. Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and OBJ are locked. After that though, it’s a dogfight. With a roster of smaller, less physical WR’s, you’d think third year WR Erik Ezukanma 6’2 210 might have a leg up, but he’s been often injured, and that will hurt him as vies to make the roster. When I say physical, I mean catching contested balls, and running after the catch. We haven’t see either of those per se from EZ, but we have seen him with the football on end arounds, and maybe a screen or two, and he’s the most physical one with the ball in his hands of the bunch. Veteran WR River Cracraft is a savvy guy who can get open and is an excellent blocker in the pass game. If I had to pick a player I think faces the steepest uphill battle to make the roster, it’s Braxton Berrios. I feel that rookie WR Malik Washington is his replacement, so I’m thinking Hill, Waddle, OBJ, Cracraft, EZ and Washington, if we carry 6 WR’s. Early in the season we carried 5 wideouts, later 6.

The Tight End battle will be another one to watch. The top 3 are set, and perhaps that’s all we carry. Durham Smythe, Jonnu Smith and Julian Hill are locked. We know they love potential of Tanner Conner, but will it ever be realized in a Dolphins uniform? Conner left PS 1 against the Falcons with potentially a rib injury, but nothing was confirmed on that front. Yeah, he looked great on that long catch and run play, but can he play more than 3 plays without getting hurt? Former Chiefs TE Jody Fortson, who seems more like a big WR is another player hoping to make the roster. Hayden Rucci is the other guy fighting for a roster spot, and don’t be surprised if we carry on three.

The RB battle might be a little easier to decipher. Well, at least as far as the top 3, which are co-starters Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, and then rookie sensation Jaylen Wright. Who wins that final roster spot, and yes, we’ll almost certainly be carrying 4 running backs, will probably be determined after the preseason. Veteran Jeff Wilson Jr., Chris Brooks and Salvon Ahmed will be battling for the final spot. Both Wilson and Brooks are two of the more physical runners in the group, but age is on Brooks side, experience on Wilson’s. Ahmed, who seems to always be counted somehow always sticks because MM loves the guy. FB Alec Ingold is locked in. I think it will be Brooks, but this last spot is very unpredictable

Once again, lets hope for no injuries, and some good, clean play all around on both offense and defense. We’re still going to be seeing lots of basic, vanilla stuff from both our team and the opposition, but that’s when you can really gauge game play. No one is going to be fooled out there, it’s just mano a mano, so if you want to make the roster, you’d better show well on that game film or you may be looking for a job next week. There’s a different kind of excitement now, this is Tua’s team, he’s confident, happy, and poised to take the next step in his career. Just stay healthy, and that goes of course not just for Tua, but the entire roster, as that was our undoing at the end of the season last year. Such a pleasure to see OLB Jaelan Phillips activated off the PUP! I’m so excited for him and our defense. We have to be careful with him, we need him around at the end, so Chop Robinson, Quinton Bell, Emmanuel Ogbah and Mo Kamara have to be effective when the big guy rests.

Don’t know why they didn’t put Ahmed on PUP. They could have used another RB for reps during PS.

Liked what EZ brought last night, minus the holding penalty.

This is crazy. Long video so go to 3:12 mark. I like this dude because he explains what he is using and fishes the same waters as me.

  13. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Tua better stay healthy because the drop off is ridiculous. Thompson was bad, White was worse.

The 2nd half of the game was like pulling teeth, injuries to players on both teams every other play and a lot of sloppy play.

Our DBs got away with pretty egregious holding on deep pass plays at least 3 or 4 times. And we gave up a few big runs. Other than that, I didn’t see any huge breakdowns and even though we gave up a ton of yardage between the 30’s, we shut them down once they crossed into the redzone and redzone adjacent areas.

Even if we give up a ton of yardage, as long as our redzone D is top notch, that’ll work. Redzone D and creating TOs are really the most important aspects of D in today’s league. It’s next to impossible to stop good offenses in the middle of the field.

Looks like a hammy strain for Cam Smith.

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

ok excited enough to plunk down 69.99 for Madden 25

    Downloading now. LOL

I’ll let you know how the team is…. haha

  16. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Sanders with a miss in each game now. Sure the miss last game was a 58 yd kick (after hitting from that distance earlier), but a 49 yd that would have made it a two score game- don’t like to see it.

Bailey with the worst possible time to shank a kick- on the last drive to give them a short field for a potential game winner. D came up big again.

Not a fan of the new kickoffs. Maybe they’ll grow on me…like a tumor or something.

  17. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Tua was awesome, that drop in the bucket to Cracraft was as good as it gets.

We were 1 of 3 converting 3rd/4th and short.

We didn’t see it with Tua, but the backup QBs were hit with instant interior pressure a number of times. I’m still worried our oline is going to be our downfall.

Didn’t see a lot of pressure from our D without blitzing. Really hope Phillips is ready to start the season or at least the first month. I don’t expect Chubb to be a factor this year.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I agree . We didn’t do enough to upgrade the OL after Hunt and Williams left.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This offense is really built to help the oline succeed. Like Steve mentioned, it really only needs to be average for us to do well (maybe a little above average in run blocking).

The one thing we cannot do is give up quick interior pressure, but it’s worrisome when looking at the players, that might be exactly the weakness of this group.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yes- Butch Barry is key. I’m really hoping (again) that Eich can make a jump this year. If he can’t then he’ll never be a quality starter for us, and merely a depth piece. Robert Jones stepping up would be nice too.

  18. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh yeah, and I just remembered this.

When you’re trying to make the team, having some unnecessary spectacular runback of an INT at the end of the game probably wouldn’t be as impressive as showing some f^cking football IQ. After securing that INT, go to the ground and end the damned game, you flipping idiot.

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua having to convert 2 4th downs was a good thing, getting Jonnu involved was better

MM must wake up in the middle of the night, and start thinking of ways he can get Jonnu involved more

EZ, Jonnu and Hill all should have week to week special plays designed for at critical situations

Jonnu and EZ change everything on O, when Hill and Waddle are doubled, expect less doubling

OBJ and the 3-headed backfield are more options, get blocking and we’re unstoppable

Paul should also come in as tackle eligible on the Debo type plays, 3/4 and 1 or 2 he needs to be on the field

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

OL will be the key to our success, and of course health to main players

an avg OL is all we need

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

some guys are hard for us to evaluate, because of those on the field at the same time, the coaches don’t have that problem

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Watched the first drive, Tua looked absolutely fantastic. I’m very hopeful he can accomplish what we need from him this season

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – It’s funny, my first thought watching the way they were using Jonnu made me immediately think Erik Ezukanma is in trouble making the roster

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Just played a game of Madden 25 and I may never throw the ball. Not kidding. LOL Mostert is unstoppable, Achane hits a seam and is gone and Write gets to the point of the block so fast he springs for a big run every time. DB’s are going to get tired of having to catch and tackle our RB’s!

  26. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Butch Barry

Barry is the offensive line coach for the Miami Dolphins since the 2023 season, a total of two years. Barry’s record as the team’s offensive line coach was 11-6-0, making him the third-most successful offensive line coach in Miami Dolphins history. The team made it to the playoffs one time (2023) and had a 0-1 record under Coach Barry in playoff games. Matt Applebaum

Turner was the offensive line coach for the Miami Dolphins in the 2012-2013 seasons, a total of two years. Mike Maser

not a lot of continuity in the Oline room man. Hopefully that changes with some marked progress from perennial journeymen and lat round picks under the latest

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

IMO, John Benton was the best of the aforementioned. He was the understudy of the late, great “Godfather of the Zone Scheme” Alex Gibbs. Adam Gase was a fool to have fired him when he became HC in 2016.

Not sure Milton would be a systematic fit for the McDaniel Offense, but I don’t care, either. I’m stealing him as well. I’m a HUGE fan of Joe Milton.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – he looks quite a bit quicker than last season. That’s why I’m hopeful, he may be able to extend some plays where last season he may given up or threw the ball away or forced a ball to a receiver. The downside is when you do get hit, you have a better chance of getting ragdolled because of the weight differential of the guy hitting him and himself

  36. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

watching the Tua highlights everything was quick, so he wouldn’t get hurt

also he looked great doing it, but if you do it too often the run game could suffer, if they catch on (just play run)

  37. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua is going to love Jonnu, if nothing more than his outlet receiver

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – I watched more of the game, EZ actually had a nice game. Maybe he stays and Berrios is out

  39. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

just can’t get enough of what Jonnu brings, the jet sweep he ran changes the game

    how do you stop that?

you fake the jet sweep, then hit him on a screen, after his man relaxes

send Hill and Waddle deep, double covered leaves us with 3 receivers 1 on 1, against zone you dink and dunk for at least 5 every play, Hill or Waddle not doubled you go over the top

this O is going to be great

  40. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think I’ve seen enough of Jonnu, with the 2 practices vs Atl and this game to know he’s an MM wet dream

  41. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

but other than that I don’t think much of Jonnu😜

  42. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m thinking we should win this next game 42-0, so we can trade some guys not likely to make the team or lose 42-0, so our cuts don’t put anything more (good) on tape (only bad)as to not get poached

  43. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With EZ looking good with White throwing him the ball, imagine how much better Tua could make him look

3rd and goal at the 10, I want Hill, Waddle, Jonnu, OBJ and EZ on the field

Exchange in any of our 3 RBs for anyone and it’s still pretty good, just don’t throw too many fades to our small WRs

I’m thinking Achane for his underneath routes too

The guy was a good DC

and maybe if he finds a team with a vet QB in place, they let him coach the team again, but not being mindful of what it takes to develop a young QB in this league is a death sentence to a coach

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Assuming the Dolphins keep six wide receivers, Ezukanma could join Tyreek Hill, Waddle, OBJ, Braxton Berrios, and rookie sixth-round pick Malik Washington, whose spot on the roster appears solid.

We’re at roughly $33.5M UNDER the cap as we speak, which is #5 best in the NFL.

Question: why didn’t we use the franchise tag on Christian Wilkins again? We had a real shot to gain a day 1 pick in a trade, plus it would only be a one-year deal if we had no takers… allowing him to walk to FA next season.

Franchise tag price for DTs in ’24: $22.1M

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

because at the time we didn’t have the cap space. (post June 1 for X’s money) then we freed up all but 1.5M or so of Tua’s salary so we got like 20M back on him.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

the date of the franchise tag precluded us from doing it because at the time we were over the cap.

  62. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ezukanma definitely has a unique skill set. At this time he’s a poor man’s Deebo Samuel. Is there another level he can reach if he can stay healthy?

  63. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We need to roll over that 30M because we are 44M over the cap already next season and we have pushed out everyone we can past the time when they will no longer be on the roster. WAY TOO MANY guys with voided years added to their contracts, including Tua. Asshole (grief) added void years to the QUARTERBACK’S CONTRACT!!!! So, when he goes to re-up the QB in 3 years he will already be dealing with Millions in dead money, in the way of new live money!!

While the NFL has a salary cap, it also has a salary floor, so teams cannot hold onto money perpetually. Teams must spend at least 89% of the cap over a four-year period, while the NFL as a whole must spend at least 95% of the cap…”

If the above is true, we have MAJOR flexibility for this season (emergency trades/FA signings), MAJOR cap relief for 2025, or even the possibility of using some of that cap space to re-sign a player or two (looking at Holland).

  68. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You can rollover 100%, but you have to payout in cash 90% of the cap for every 3 years running, so

From 2021-2023, 2024-2026, and 2027-2030 every team needs to pay out in cash at least 89% 90% of the salary caps for those years, and the whole league together has to pay out at least 95% of those amounts in cash during those periods.

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we’ll be rolling over the entire amount of unused cap space, we still have to pay for practice squad, but get back some money for guys not currently on top 51

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I have to say there is too much concern over the salary cap. When you have a good roster you try to win in the present. There will be a time when a team has to retool but we’ve seen that with every team over the years.

Over the years we’ve had lots of cap space and rollover and it produced mediocre and bad seasons. It’s about talent and winning. Why would any fan be against trying to win a championship instead of building forever and hoping someday it clicks?

Since Grier took over as the head honcho of football operations in 2019 we’ve had one losing season and made the playoffs 2 years in row for the first time in 22 years. Enjoy the moment!

I truly enjoy every facet of the game… from salary cap and roster management, to the agent perspective, to the coaching aspects, all the way to the players.

      I LOVE THIS GAME!!!

And yes, I AM enjoying the moment, my Brother. 😀

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It’s very simple really, those of us who “care” do so because we don’t want a flash in the pan on visit to the SB to lose and then not get back for decades. Some franchises do an excellent job with the draft and managing their cap so they are perennial contenders. Then there are the other teams that “win the offseason” every year, but don’t ever make it to the big game. Watching the team’s future be pissed away for the GM’s job today is not what I want in my team.

  71. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Can a team carryover excess, unused Salary Cap space from one season to the next?

One way that teams can increase their Salary Cap space is by carrying over any unused Cap space from the prior year. Teams must notify the league of the amount they wish to carry over from one year to the next by 4:00 p.m. on the day following the team’s final regular season game.

  72. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

What is a team’s “adjusted” Salary Cap?

While each team’s Salary Cap is initially set by the terms of the CBA (as calculated as explained above), there are several adjustments that can increase (or decrease) a team’s Salary Cap. The first adjustment, as explained above, is the carryover of any excess Cap space from the prior year. The second, the net incentive adjustment, is explained below and can affect the team’s Cap either positively or negatively.

Once those two adjustments are added to the league-wide Salary Cap number, the resulting number is known as the team’s “Adjusted” Salary Cap and it is this number that a team’s available Cap space is based on.

  73. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Say we roll over 30 million to next year. It doesn’t mean we will have that much extra cap. Players we signed with incentives like OBJ among others, if reached, that incentive money will be deducted from that 30 million or the next years cap.

Ahmed may end up on practice squad at some point during the season when healthy.

  83. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Not just Ahmed:

“Offensive lineman Sean Harlow and wide receiver Willie Snead IV were both placed on the reserve/injured list which ends the season for both players. Linebacker Ezekiel Vandenburgh was waived/injured, while running back Salvon Ahmed was released.”

  84. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

To replace the departing players, the Dolphins signed running backs Zander Horvath (formerly of the Los Angeles Chargers) and Anthony McFarland Jr. (formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers), linebacker Dequan Jackson (formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars) and wide receiver Jadon Janke (an undrafted rookie out of South Dakota State).

Nothing to see here. Just the last PS game to get through. We know who the main backs are. They get some video and opportunities.

He’s 6’2 235 and played RB at Purdue, not FB. He entered the draft as a FB. Not sure how the Chargers were using him.

Dolphins practice here shortly before traveling to Tampa for tomorrow’s joint practice. Today will be final Miami Gardens Dolphins practice fully open to media until May 2025. So for those who have become addicted to training camp play-by-play, that ends after tomorrow in Tampa.

Omar says he doesn’t expect OBJ to be ready to play until October. Him just guessing.
