Dolphins roster set for Week 1

The roster is relatively set, although there always a few spots on the roster that will remain fluid. There were surprises, to me, none more than the fact that the Dolphins are carrying only 5 defensive linemen. Yes, I’m well aware DE/LB Ogbah can included in that group as well, and probably should be, he’s listed as an OLB for now. Still, the defense that was supposed to be heavy on the rotation, Weaver said it himself, the “tsunami” or second wave is no more than splash in a kiddie pool with DL Brandon Pili and Da’Shawn Hand. Forgive me if they don’t get me all me pumped up about our defense.

The state of the WR room is the 2nd biggest surprise. We can basically only field 5 healthy guys, and those are the ones on the roster. For the many of you who guessed WR Grant DuBose was going to make the roster, a hearty congratulations to you! So Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Braxton Berrios, Malik Washington and Grant DuBose are the wideouts. We’re carrying 4 TE’s, and don’t be surprised if the TE’s get a whole lotta action not only early, but maybe all season long. Jonnu Smith, Durham Smythe, Julian Hill and Tanner Conner. I hope they do get loads of catches and take the heat off of Tyreel Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

In addition to the TE’s, expect the RB’s to be very involved in the passing gamed. We know De’Von Achane is an excellent receiver but I think he will have a lot of receptions this season. Rookie Jaylen Wright is also a dependable receiver, but I think Achane will be lined in the slot and outside as well on occasion, and not just be a target out of the backfield. No need to force the ball to Hill and Waddle when there are so many dangerous guys on the field when they get the ball.

Not surprising is the offensive line. If you’re a knowledgeable fan, you hoped it wouldn’t come to this, but you’re not shocked it did. LT Armstead, LG Robert Jones, C Aaron Brewer, RG Liam Eichenberg and RT Austin Jackson. Isaiah Wynn nowhere to be found, and who knows if ever suits up in 2024. No word as to whether C Aaron Brewer is healthy enough or even ready since he hasn’t practiced a lick after injuring his hand weeks ago. Eichenberg would start at C and then Cotton would slide in at RG. Again, not what we wanted to see but not shocking to any of us. Grier didn’t do his best work in the trenches. Lots of nice shiny position players, but the trenches seem like an afterthought. That doesn’t mean it can’t work out, but Tua will have to remain quick with his reads and anticipation and get the ball out quickly, or perhaps his new playing weight will allow him to be the next Fran Tarkenton.

I’m pleased with the secondary, although injuries there have me a bit worried too. Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer both are dealing with injuries. As far as I know, the backups, Marcus Maye and Elijah Campbell are healthy. Both starting CB’s are healthy, and that’s a huge upgrade from last year when Jalen Ramsey was OUT, a very gimpy Xavien Howard was IN, and Eli Apple was on the opposite side of gimpy Howard. Ugh! Kader Kohou will be the nickel, and I’m pleased that some new blood, CB’s Storm Duck, and UDFA made the roster, and deservedly so. Ethan Bonner also made the roster, and Cam Smith, unfortunately is on the IR/designated to return list.

At linebacker, it will be interesting to see how much they mix up the reps with a healthy Jaelan Phillips, Emmanuel Ogbah, Quinton Bell, and rookies Chop Robinson and Mo Kamara. I have no idea how they split reps there, and although we hear only the best things about Phillips being ready, I think they ease him in. In fact, there might be a heavier rotation at LB than there is on the defensive line. We’ll see. We’ll see how well Jordyn Brooks and David Long stuff the middle, and if our pass rush is up to snuff. Another who knows is if we ever see Bradley Chubb in uniform and on the field playing this season. I have my doubts. Hopefully it’s because the guys are plying so well!

    steve,

I doubt Smith will get doubled a lot. My guess is teams may need to start playing us more straight up and normalize coverages a bit more. It may not be flat out doubles that Smith demands. But, if he can simply draw coverage away from Hill and Waddle and Achane…even a few yards…it can open things up for our speed guys.

I think(hope) we have a serious weapon in Achane. I really hope we see MM get him in the game flow more. If he can stay on the field, he’s a mismatch nightmare at multiple positions. Get the ball in his hands.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hope Jonnu doesn’t get doubled, I’d rather be throwing to him on 3rd down, than anyone else

I agree on Achane, but we didn’t put all our eggs in his basket, with the drafting of Wright we have a great insurance policy for both Achane and Mostert, and expect to see all 3 on the field at the same time this year

I too have high hopes for Achane and expect the motivation of PT and competition should bring out the best in him

You either get it done or step aside and let the next man step in

Don’t care about anyone’s stats this year, just move the chains

“He has been doing a great job this week. We’re really excited with how he’s working,” Dolphins OC Frank Smith on Aaron Brewer.

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We’ll see some 3 safety looks for Dolphins in this defense. Asked how Maye complements Holland/Poyer, Anthony Weaver praises Maye but adds “don’t sleep on Elijah Campbell.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Wow! Didn’t expect that

I get that feeling, that Weaver’s is going to bring out the best in his players, we’ve seen hints so far

  4. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @OmarKelly

“We’re not making wholesale changes if he can’t play….It’s going to have to be the whole defense if he doesn’t play,” Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver on Jalen Ramsey’s status cause of his hamstring issue.

  5. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,

I don’t consider sliding a step or two in the pocket scrambling. Tua doesn’t escape the pocket much. Last year his go-to move was to fall down. He’s not all that great at sliding inside the pocket, so I’m not really sure where you’re going with this. Granted, if you’re throwing the ball as quickly as possible, there isn’t a lot of time to slide around much. This is a timing offense, if Tua is moving much, the play ain’t working. We’ve watched this kid play for many years. I don’t think we’ve seen a great pocket presence/manager or great scrambling ability. Again, not all on Tua.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No it isn’t scrambling, but it does buy time and that’s my

Tua last year was way too heavy, I’d throw out any movement issues he had, we’ve already seen him scramble around in PS and in

In other seasons he moved around pretty well, but he did mention he isn’t moving around like he did at Bama pre hip injury, still better than any of his other seasons being 4 years removed from hip surgery

    @WingfieldNFL

“All those edge guys are going to play,” — Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver when asked about the workload for the group of edge rushers for Sunday’s game.

With regards to the rookies, he said: you have to let them touch the stove a little bit (and learn from there).

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

LOL @ “Let them touch the stove” I wonder if Weaver is a Dad? I am a big proponent of letting people learn by doing. Waaaaaaaahhhh the dog bit me! Yeah, don’t pull the dog’s tail. You learn your lesson?

  8. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am so silly. I am reading these prediction articles and getting mad at the writers who made the SAME prediction as me. LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t follow predictions anymore, there are too many of them and none of them really know. Picking games W/L is a waste of time before any games have been played. Every season is new and it’s not all based on last year’s results.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

        Tim: 12-5

You don’t follow them, but you participate….LOL

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m talking about game by game results, playoff seeding and Super Bowl. How can anyone possibly predict that before any games have been played?

My record prediction is just a simple number based on how I view our team talent wise. I don’t know which games will result in that record. I’m also just doing it for fun. I had it right last year at 11-6 and I got the Chop pick right as well. Just roll with it. 😂

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

At least either the Chiefs or Ravens will be 0-1 after tonight.

I also forgot there is Friday night NFL football with Eagles vs Packers in Brazil tomorrow.

  10. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Pili looks a lot like Christian Wilkins in his All 22 or Fred Sanford, can’t tell which

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Seriously though he’s got a motor like Wilkins and is bigger and stronger

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wilkins is a really good player; non-stop motor, productive and durable. But he doesn’t wreck games like elite players do. I’m happy for him that he got paid. Just don’t think he’s on that level of contract.

That’s EXACTLY where I’m at. I’m looking at the talent of our team and predicting a final outcome. We might lay an egg against a weaker team, and we might destroy a stronger opponent. It all comes out in the wash.

And yes, it’s for fun! I got it right at 11-6 last year too, and I certainly didn’t beat my chest (nor did you)… nor did I/we win any prizes! 😉

I just have to laugh at the echo chamber that is sports “reporting” and commenting. I have read MANY times both from talking heads and repeated by sheeple on here that Anthony Weaver likes to use 3 safety sets. Just how is this known by all the “experts”? To be clear, Weaver has been a defensive line coach for most of his career except his one season as a DC in 2020. He has NOT run three high safeties, well, except MAYBE one season. To this date it has not been his scheme or his decision to make and has not been his area of expertise. Is it because Wink Martindale used to like to do it? Was it because Mike MacDonald liked to do it? Just exactly how do people make the jump from defensive line coach to he has tendencies on how he uses the secondary? WE CANNOT EVEN BE SURE he installed the defensive system from the Ravens!

  32. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

good news on the injury report front:

The Miami Dolphins injury outlook was a lot brighter Thursday, based on the updated injury report.

After a Wednesday practice that featured 12 players limited or not working, that number was down to only four, with only cornerback Jalen Ramsey not practicing.

The three limited players were repeats from Wednesday, though that included center Aaron Brewer, who told reporters he was good to go for the season opener.

Also listed as questionable for a second consecutive day were DT Benito Jones (knee) and WR Malik Washington (quadriceps).

Four players actually disappeared from the injury report entirely — tackle Terron Armstead, defensive lineman Calais Campbell, linebacker David Long Jr. and cornerback Kendall Fuller. All of them were given a vet rest day Wednesday, with Armstead and Campbell not working and the other two being limited.

Safety Jordan Poyer and linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. were full participants after being limited and listed with an injury along with vet rest Wednesday. Linebacker Jaelan Phillips also was a full participant after not working and being listed with Achilles/vet rest.

Linebacker Quinton Bell went from limited to full, while safety Jevon Holland was listed as a full participant for a second consecutive day despite an ankle injury.

  34. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I wanted KC to win, hate Ravens and we don’t matchup with them, anyways seemed like anytime the Chefs needed a call they got it, about 4 times they called the Bal LT for illegal formation, then the roughing the passer after a KC holding that made it 1-20 around the Bal 23
