Dolphins roster set for Week 1

The roster is relatively set, although there always a few spots on the roster that will remain fluid. There were surprises, to me, none more than the fact that the Dolphins are carrying only 5 defensive linemen. Yes, I’m well aware DE/LB Ogbah can included in that group as well, and probably should be, he’s listed as an OLB for now. Still, the defense that was supposed to be heavy on the rotation, Weaver said it himself, the “tsunami” or second wave is no more than splash in a kiddie pool with DL Brandon Pili and Da’Shawn Hand. Forgive me if they don’t get me all me pumped up about our defense.

The state of the WR room is the 2nd biggest surprise. We can basically only field 5 healthy guys, and those are the ones on the roster. For the many of you who guessed WR Grant DuBose was going to make the roster, a hearty congratulations to you! So Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Braxton Berrios, Malik Washington and Grant DuBose are the wideouts. We’re carrying 4 TE’s, and don’t be surprised if the TE’s get a whole lotta action not only early, but maybe all season long. Jonnu Smith, Durham Smythe, Julian Hill and Tanner Conner. I hope they do get loads of catches and take the heat off of Tyreel Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

In addition to the TE’s, expect the RB’s to be very involved in the passing gamed. We know De’Von Achane is an excellent receiver but I think he will have a lot of receptions this season. Rookie Jaylen Wright is also a dependable receiver, but I think Achane will be lined in the slot and outside as well on occasion, and not just be a target out of the backfield. No need to force the ball to Hill and Waddle when there are so many dangerous guys on the field when they get the ball.

Not surprising is the offensive line. If you’re a knowledgeable fan, you hoped it wouldn’t come to this, but you’re not shocked it did. LT Armstead, LG Robert Jones, C Aaron Brewer, RG Liam Eichenberg and RT Austin Jackson. Isaiah Wynn nowhere to be found, and who knows if ever suits up in 2024. No word as to whether C Aaron Brewer is healthy enough or even ready since he hasn’t practiced a lick after injuring his hand weeks ago. Eichenberg would start at C and then Cotton would slide in at RG. Again, not what we wanted to see but not shocking to any of us. Grier didn’t do his best work in the trenches. Lots of nice shiny position players, but the trenches seem like an afterthought. That doesn’t mean it can’t work out, but Tua will have to remain quick with his reads and anticipation and get the ball out quickly, or perhaps his new playing weight will allow him to be the next Fran Tarkenton.

I’m pleased with the secondary, although injuries there have me a bit worried too. Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer both are dealing with injuries. As far as I know, the backups, Marcus Maye and Elijah Campbell are healthy. Both starting CB’s are healthy, and that’s a huge upgrade from last year when Jalen Ramsey was OUT, a very gimpy Xavien Howard was IN, and Eli Apple was on the opposite side of gimpy Howard. Ugh! Kader Kohou will be the nickel, and I’m pleased that some new blood, CB’s Storm Duck, and UDFA made the roster, and deservedly so. Ethan Bonner also made the roster, and Cam Smith, unfortunately is on the IR/designated to return list.

At linebacker, it will be interesting to see how much they mix up the reps with a healthy Jaelan Phillips, Emmanuel Ogbah, Quinton Bell, and rookies Chop Robinson and Mo Kamara. I have no idea how they split reps there, and although we hear only the best things about Phillips being ready, I think they ease him in. In fact, there might be a heavier rotation at LB than there is on the defensive line. We’ll see. We’ll see how well Jordyn Brooks and David Long stuff the middle, and if our pass rush is up to snuff. Another who knows is if we ever see Bradley Chubb in uniform and on the field playing this season. I have my doubts. Hopefully it’s because the guys are plying so well!

  2. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I don’t know if it is madden 25 that sucks or the Dolphins on madden 25 that sucks or both. But last year’s team was much better to play with then this year’s team Can’t complete a pass can’t run for a single yard Madden believes our offensive line is trash I agree with them

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

DuBose is the blocking WR, heavily used in an MM O, he replaces Cracraft

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If the PS is any indication we’ll be using a lot of TEs this year

Crabbs says in 12P or 21P we’ve been 100% in converting on 3rd and 4th and 4 yards or less over the past 2 years, we need to use more of these formations

  5. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Agree on RBs catching more passes

Little Tua worry wart needs to put on his big boy pants and start hitting receivers not named Hill/Waddle

and Hill needs to be more of a team player and STFU about 2k

My next door neighbor the Pats fan, says Wynn would be a Pro Bowler, if he could stay healthy, and that Belicheat cut him loose, because he couldn’t stay healthy

I say let’s groom him to play, when the schedule gets brutal late in the season

  7. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    good summary Mike

Is Berrios still on the 53?

I think the plan is to bring Ezukanma up often like they did CraCraft last year.

Maybe work Chosen in some, too. He’s very fast and knows how to play pro football. He’s very grateful to our FO for keeping him in the league, so he’ll work hard, and he knows the O and Tua.

he’s skinny, but he does use his speed to try to get in the way of tacklers.

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This is true across all draft boards:

    Matt Miller @nfldraftscout

This has to be a first since Nick Saban got to Alabama: I don’t have a single Crimson Tide player with a preseason top 32 NFL draft ranking

    ———

I think it depends on how well QB Jalen Milroe plays this year. He’s the top Alabama prospect but viewed as a mid 2nd round pick.

Alabama will have the best OG in the draft in 6’5, 350 pound, Tyler Booker. He is athletic, powerful and smart and could be a late 1st round pick. He had 41 pancakes last year but did give up 2 sacks. He’s played both OG spots and think he is slotted to be their LG this season.

  9. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

this is a weird team and a strange schedule this year.

By the numbers we have a way easier sked than last year,

but it doesn’t seem like it. Jax is very dangerous right out the gate.

we have as many stars as any team, but they’re all hurt.

and football is a serious example of “only as strong as your weakest link.”

We have the top player in the league, but everybody knows his game.

we have the #1 CB in the league, but last year he was mismanaged into mediocrity.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

it’s not just about the roster, as you alluded to, it’s almost as much about putting players in position to succeed

look no further than our OL, MM uses quick passing game which minimizes their ineptitude, and gives them help in the run game with everyone blocking

Say what you want about the OL, but this O is run by a team concept of everyone has a role in the pass game and the run game, if a TE whiffs on a block it makes the OL look bad

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think many are underestimating the Jaguars.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jacksonville isn’t Miami geographically, it’s in the ballpark, but not really that close with heat index

Played softball today, had a short rain delay at the start and then it got humid, but nothing like it is in Miami in that situation (sun coming out after rain), nonetheless I was beat after 7 innings, we usually play 2 games

our opener is at 1pm, if it rains at some point before or during the game, we’ll have a huge advantage in 4th

  10. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

this is why I don’t pay attention to the national guys, they have no clue…stopped watching, when they got to Bonner and Duck a couple of minutes in

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Thanks MikeE!

Again, my biggest worry is the OL depth. With Eich most likely starting at center, we have no backup OG on the 53 and the only backup OG on the practice squad is Hines. That’s terrible

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Meyer to start at C maybe, and Cotton looks better this year

I think maybe Driscoll is brought back, if not maybe Brewer is ready

but yeah we can’t go into game 1 with Brewer out and no backup guards other than Hines

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

college football is so fucked up.

FSU is in 17th place in the ACC.

    then

TCU at Stanford on ESPN at 9:30pm tonight

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Thank you, Mike E. Game on!

I have no idea what to expect so….

  18. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Do you think they intend for Paul to be a backup OG?

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Naples, we still had 4 non-vet spots to fill on the PS.

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The only one of those new additions that ring a bell is the RB Prince. I remember him having big games vs South Florida. I think he has a little speed too if I am thinking of the right guy.

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    On the tackle Hardy:

The Steelers signed Anderson Hardy to a reserve/future contract on Jan. 17, 2024. After going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, Hardy was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs before being released. The Steelers hosted Hardy for a workout in September but did not opt to sign him. Hardy worked at center during his time with the Chiefs but projects as a guard-tackle hybrid.

He certainly could be, but his future is at tackle

    ————

I entertained the thought recently (playing Darth Paul at Guard), but honestly… I think his arms are too long and he’s so tall. It would be akin to wielding a rifle inside of a phone booth. Not saying Paul couldn’t play Guard in a pinch or even at all, but that would not be an ideal situation, IMO.

By the way, nice write per usche (<- did I spell it right?)!

  23. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

BP is our future tackle…he’s being groomed, don’t fuck it up…lol

  24. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

He was the guy I was thinking about. He has some breakaway speed that I didn’t realize.

Oh, and I do think Paul could play guard. He’s so damn big and I think his size and athleticism would be fine at G. Ultimately, his value is best at T though.

    ———–

I believe he could conceivably play Guard as well, but Paul was one of the very few top O-Line prospects this past Draft who has only played one position his entire life. In his case, LT. He has zero position versatility, unlike Graham Barton… who can play all 5 O-Line positions.

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I expect our D to be real good, allowing us to win games, when we score 17 or less

if we aren’t scoring 20+ our OL will be the culprit, if we can the D will take care of business

  27. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I remember Jabbar playing for the Lakers in 1976, the team wasn’t very good, but even in the playoffs he could get hot and beat anyone on a given day

This is what I expect from Buffalo this year with Allen

  28. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

A while back I looked at Jags pass rush, besides Allen and maybe the other DE (our strength matches up with them favorably), they aren’t very good, overall not very good either

    I think we’ll be fine week 1

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jags have Allen (17.5 sacks) and Walker (10 sacks) on the edges. Then they added a good pass rushing DT in Arik Armstead.

On offense they added 1st round pick beast WR Brian Thomas Jr, 6’3 209 who ran a 4.33 forty. They also added free agent WR’s in Gabe Davis from the Bills and Devin Duvernay from the Ravens and still have a solid Christian Kirk and Evan Engram at TE who had 114 receptions last year.

Just because they weren’t good last year doesn’t mean they won’t be this year.

  29. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think LT is going to light up the Jags week 1🤪

  30. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We still don’t know if Ramsey, Holland or Poyer will be ready for game 1.

  31. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I really like the PS signing of Naquan Jones. Makes me feel better about our DL depth.

  32. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Naples, your Clemson defense is scrappy

  33. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Brian/M, I think Drew Allar needs to stay another year at PSU if he wants a shot at being a 1st round pick.

Keeping an eye on PSU safety Kevin Winston Jr as a potential 1st round pick for us next draft.

  34. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Remember the name Nico Iamaleava.

I think he’s a redshirt freshman or sophomore QB for Tennessee, 6’6 215. You are going to hear a lot about him. Already can see the talent.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know TN is playing a nobody (UT Chattanooga), but Iamaleava looked good in their bowl game vs Iowa last year.

      He’s 19 of 22 for 282, 3 TD’s and 0 INT in the first half.

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Clemson defense is out of gas

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Safety Malaki Starks is another one I like as a 1st round pick. That INT he had today was impressive.

I like safeties Starks and Winston Jr as 1st round possibilities next draft.

Especially since Patrick McMorris is the only safety on the roster for 2025 right now.

  37. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lamar Jackson playing QB now vs Gators

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBMike – There are so many unknowns in our lineup vs JAX. C, RG, NT, OLB, S, S, LCB. It’s pretty crazy. They probably know, we don’t though

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d say the large majority of those unknown injuries are precautionary

We saw how well the 2nd and 3rd stringers played on D, I think it’s an indication of things to come, Weaver has arrived

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, I believe it is a matter of “we don’t know”. This week to Wednesday, we will know a lot more. They want Jax guessing as much as us.

  39. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Is this a statement game for UM or are the Gators just “meh” again this year?

We’d been helping take care of her, a big part of the reason I’ve been scarce on the blog. We’d just gotten her moved from the Washington house to the Shasta house, then she got COVID and was life-flighted to Oregon.

We have been driving back and forth between 3 different states for the past half a year. At this point, I’d be happy to never see the inside of a car again, lol. That isn’t in the cards though, still a shit ton to do.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If our D is as I expect, the O will be able to run more and take less chances, as we coast to some easy wins

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not worried about the offense too much, Hill and Waddle and Jonnu, the run game is all in healthy, just the O-line worries me, but I think we’ll be OK. The D scares me a bit because we don’t know who’s playing, meaning Ramsey, Holland, Poyer, Phillips etc . . .

  56. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

X was bad last year, Fuller is an upgrade

Safety is an upgrade, ILB upgrade, Edge should be better

IDL won’t be as good, but Calais isn’t that far of a fall off, tge issue is he doesn’t play as many snaps

    CB depth should be improved

Scheme and player satisfaction are better, with Ramsey and others moved around to fit their strengths

I know you Missourians have trust issues, but…

  57. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – I think Long is good, we’ll see if Brooks is as good or better than #55 Baker. Not sure why you think we’re bad at Safety, Holland is good to very good, Poyer has been good but I can see expecting a drop off. At CB we’re way better

  58. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

at LB Walker has been very good in coverage in his career, an upgrade over Baker

You could say Chubb and/or Phillips are hurt, but they were hurt last year and may play more games this year combined (Chubb + Phillips)

PS doesn’t count, but it matters, our DBs were all very good, better than I ever remember, scheme/coaching had to play some role

  59. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Brian Miller is a weird dude

If Tua gets hurt, Thompson will fill in for that game, but it would be an absolute shock if Thompson led the team for more than a week on his own. If Tua goes down, the Dolphins will need to find someone else that would push Thompson to the practice squad and Boyle to the free-agent market.

So if Tua gets hurt were going to bring in another QB to start and no one to back him up, OK yeah sure, what a dumbass

Back on the screen. Still enjoying retirement. BUT, I’ve been offered a part time job that I’m gonna take a close look at starting Monday. We’ll see.

MY outlook for the Dolphins this season is ANOTHER YEAR OF MEDIOCRITY. SPORTS ILLUSTRATED predicts an 8-9 losing season for our favorite team. I think that’s pretty close to the truth. And, of course, our 24-year skid without a single playoff win will continue.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – – – Miami’s BIGGEST NEED is a new owner who is NOT closely related to the current owner. We will NOT win an NFL Playoff Game as long as Steve Ross owns the team.

BTW, I sure hope I’M WRONG!! Father time waits for no one (me included). It’s been 51 seasons since Miami won a Super Bowl.

    Hard to believe, isn’t it??

Disney owned TV Channels (Including ESPN family of stations) contract expired today!! This means a large number of NFL games WILL NOT BE TELEVISED BY DIRECT TV!!!

Huge number of college games WILL NOT be on live TV for many viewers until DIRECT TV CAVES IN!! –Yes, this means much higher prices for subscribers when this “strike” is finally settled.

NOT SURPRISED AT ALL that ROSS’S front office has let us down again regarding the Offensive line. Obviously, we lack 5 consistently above average starters (although 2-3 of our starters may be average or better). Quality depth is non-existent. When the inevitable injuries hit our offensive line, our quarterback will be at the mercy of a ferocious pass rush from the better defensive linemen of our opponents. Tua’s quick releases will be negated if defensive linemen are in his face! And forget about run blocking. We will be in the bottom half of the NFL in terms of yards gained rushing.

ALL the speedy wide receivers that we have will be unable to turn the tide IF WE CAN’T GET THEM THE BALL!! TOO BAD our owner and FO don’t get this concept!!

HC Mike McDaniel Monday September 2 media availability coverage thread:

McDaniel learned of his extension at a dinner at Stephen Ross’ house. He ate all of his steak, and vegetables. The veggies were minimal, per him.

On David Long’s captainship — He tried to play it cool in front of all of his teammates. Him and a couple other captains probably had an emotional moment behind closed doors. I truly know how much this game means to David Long. I thought it was a really cool orchestration of a

Aaron Brewer and Benito Jones will practice this week.

On Jags WR Brian Thomas Jr. – Super talented player that has a unique combination of being able to be a down the field third level receiver that can track and make plays down the field, while also having a route running skill set to do your underneath and intermediate routes.

If you’re not on your game, you’ll be exposed — McDaniel on Jags rush. Says that’s common across the league with all the investment teams make in pass rushers.

Oct 27 (1 PM) against the Cardinals.

We are at the back end zone (Sec 328) just around the corner from the type of section we had last two years. Price was up ten bucks to $95 (actually cheapest home game group ticket of the season).

Sec 328, rows 25-28.It’s a nice 4×10 layout starting on the aisle.

AN ANALYST for the NFL Network said she will be keeping an eye on Miami’s offensive line during their opening game against Jacksonville. She hinted that the O-Line was a bit under talented and, perhaps, the weakest part of the team. Sounds like a broken record, doesn’t it???

YESTERDAY I finished reading the best book I’ve ever read in my life. The title is TEAM OF RIVALS by Doris Kearns Goodwin. The subtitle, “The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln,” tells you what to expect from this exhaustively researched book that details the entire life, and death, of America’s greatest president. The text is 754 pages long, followed by another 150 pages of footnotes and acknowledgments. I am not theleast bit surprised that this book won the Pulitzer Prize for this category. I will surely re-read this classic within the next year because I consider it the most insightful book I’ve ever encountered! Read it and ENJOY!!
