Miami : We have a problem

Since we stole the Houston Oilers theme song music, we may as well steal one of the most iconic quotes from the Apollo 13 mission, although the quote was actually “Houston, we’ve had a problem” when the voltage dropped on the electrical system on the spacecraft. We definitely have had a problem, and still have a problem, one that reaches way further than last night’s performance against the Buffalo Bills. Our season, and potentially the Franchise itself is in danger of having a complete meltdown of this season. Even before the unfortunate injury to our QB Tua Tagovailoa , this team looked to be a mess, and that in and of itself was so disturbing and disappointing.

Oddly enough, Josh Allen didn’t beat us, as is usually the case when we face the Bills. I’m just going to get this out there quickly before I forget because I have 1000 things racing through my mind as my fingers hit the keys. Once again, this particular Buffalo Bills roster, the 2024 Buffalo Bills are once again supposed to be an inferior team, and ready and primed to be taken down. However, once again, as the prime time chokers we are, we’re ready to assume the fetal position against good teams, even if they aren’t as good as they used to be, or are supposed to be. Listen, Tua was ridiculously poor last night, and Mike McDaniel may have been worse, if that’s possible. We discussed it last night, why were Grant Dubose and Robby Chosen out there when they had only been here a couple of weeks, and we have so many weapons such as Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Jonnu Smith, De’Von Achane, Jaylen Wright etc etc ? Did we try to throw the Bills off track because they don’t have film on these guys? The very first throw to WR Grant Dubose results in an INT. The ball was forced number one, the receiver wasn’t prepared to make the reception number 2, and why on a crucial 3rd down play is our QB trying to thread the needle to a guy plucked from NFL waivers just 2 short weeks ago?

This is going to be disjointed, I have thoughts just racing through my mind. I think our HC is beloved by the players, because he is. I think one of his major flaws is preparation, and game planning. We just don’t seem to look ready or prepared in bigger games. Hell, if it wasn’t for Jevon Holland stripping the football against the Jacksonville Jaguars near the end zone from RB Travis Etienne, we may be 0-2. BTW, Jevon Holland is one guy who has yet to be paid. Hey, maybe we’ll let him test free agency like Christian Wilkins, because that worked out so well. Back to MM. Why the f*ck are WR’s Grant Dubose and Robby Chosen on the field when there’s clearly no rhythm or cohesiveness with Tua at this point? That’s on HC Mike McDaniel. Tua doesn’t set the lineup or call the plays, but the 3rd down throw for the first turnover of the game goes right on QB Tua Tagovailoa for making that throw. 3rd down and 13, and we’re throwing to fucking Grant Dubose, and not a wide open Grant Dubose either, no, a tightly covered Grant Dubose.

On defense, well, Anthony Weaver didn’t seem to have this defense prepared either. Perhaps he was expecting a typical performance from Josh Allen, but Josh was barely a participant in this one. Allen was 13-19, 1 TD, 0 INT’s, more importantly, 2 rushes for 2 yards. We made RB James Cook look like Dalvin Cook in his prime! He finished with 78 yards rushing on just 11 carries along with 2 TD’s, and then 1 catch for 17 yards and another TD for THREE total TD’s. Our defense basically did nothing. No sacks, no turnovers, no nothing. I’m aware we turned the ball over 3 times and that’s disastrous, but the defense was so not special on a day where we need it to be. Yes, Jevon Holland saved the day last week, but on this day we just looked uninspired. Not sure if OLB Jaelan Phillips got hurt, but he only played 23 snaps this week, down from 31 last week. Jaelan Phillips, Chop Robinson, Quinton Bell, Emmanuel Ogbah did nothing.

OK, back to the elephant in the room. What happens now with QB Tua Tagovailoa, and how do the Miami Dolphins proceed without his services, which may be a few weeks, or potentially the entire season, or even beyond that, the end of his career? You all know well how much I wanted this team to not give Tua a massive contract, especially without protections for a catastrophic injury like another concussion. I said it a 1000 times if I said it once, not only does he not show well in big games, but can he make it through a season when he’s not playing like he’s in bubble wrap? Well, unfortunately, we have our answer, and it’s a resounding NO. Not only he did get injured in what might end his season, or at the very least, cause him to strap on that very same bubble wrap from last season which kept him from making plays like running for a first down, but he once again showed big games are just too much for him, as he shrank in the spotlight. There’s no denying this, 3 turnovers at HOME, 80+ degrees and once again, the guy that throws for 300+ yards against anyone else has his worst performance our division rival Buffalo Bills. Surely, many doctors will urge him to retire, and now that he’s been paid, maybe he will. I know the fire burns strong, and he will want to play, but that fire can be smothered and extinguished by $167.17M

Skylar Thompson so very clearly isn’t the answer. I’d say right now that QB Mike White wishes he was here, and also maybe that S Jordan Poyer wishes he was back in Buffalo. Mike White isn’t the answer either. Depending upon how long the prognosis is on just how long QB Tua Tagovailoa will be OUT, this will affect our decision making on acquiring a new QB. Ryan Tannehill might very well be sitting close to his phone, and Joe Flacco may be as well. Tannehill had 2 NFL seasons with a rating of 100 or higher, but those seasons were pretty far in the rear view mirror, one in 2019. and the other in 2020. Still, he would be a better QB than Skylar Thompson, who really gives me no feeling that he could ever be a quality QB. Can we trade for a backup? Oh, I really don’t want to do that, we have no cap space in the next few years, I don’t want to have no cap space and no draft picks either!

So now Dolphins fans, crushed as we are, we have nothing to do but wait. Wait and see what the reports are on QB Tua Tagovailoa, find out how long it will be after MRI’s, cat scans, whatever other tests they do. It’s only Week 2, and yet the sky has fallen here, and fallen hard. It’s most difficult to find optimism for this season, despite it only being Week 2, and having a 1-1 record. The Bills have come into Hard Rock, basically their home field as it is, and tore our team a new asshole as per usghe. BTW, I’m sure you’re all aware, the collision Tua had was with DB Damar Hamlin. Ironic? Thoughts racing, caffeine pumping through my veins, along with a lethal dose of despair. I’m already thinking of the Fest as being a vacation only, and the game itself a nuisance that will keep me away from the beach. Hopefully, something good happens for us Dolphins fans, but do they ever?

Tua has announced he won’t be retiring

so I guess he’s going to be back before the 10/27

maybe sooner if he’s not placed in IR – probably no loner than the 10/6 patriots game

we know he is out this week b the Seahawks

I find it hard to believe he’s back for titans game – but we will see

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

UK – It’s such a fluid situation now. I’m sure he will have some doctors telling explaining the risks of further concussions, which seem inevitable unless he tries to avoid contact entirely, much like last season. That will win you some games against weaker teams but there will always be times when he will need to step up and get a few and sometimes even sliding doesn’t keep you safe from getting hit. As long as he’s the QB for this team, we’ll be dealing with issue.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Absolutely Mike. I can see him being one more hit away from either being forced to retire, or retiring for his health and well being. He’s got two more seasons, max in my opinion.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

if he’s coming back this year

      which he says he is

then the solution is to draft a QB early this draft

Which is what I wanted to do anyway

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

For sure to all of that – I’d come around to the idea of him announcing he was going to hang em up. It seems like he’s not at that point. Of course there’ll be lots of family soul searching. That could go any way depending on advice and other’s opinion, but him wanting to go again if all the metrics and opinions are in his favour surprised me. I guess he still feels like he has stuff to prove.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I kind of got the sense he would want to go again unless he cant

I wouldn’t have blamed him for retiring – but I don’t think that’s close to what he wants

  3. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

I also wondered if he does come back how he will be defended. No one us going to want to be the one who inflicts irreparable damage on him but the NFL is very much ‘take no prisoners’

  4. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    UK,

The NFL doesn’t allow their QBs to be touched. But, defenders aren’t gonna be worried about Tua’s health. They’re all taking the same risk, and if I’m a defender I have a chip on my shoulder about how much offensive players are coddled anyway. You know one hit may get the opposing QB out. Yes, please. Sorry but that’s how it is.

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    So, here’s this

    @darrenrovell

Tua HAS to say he has no plans on retiring in order to get his $124 million.

If he retires voluntarily, he is guaranteed nothing. If he goes to a specialist and the specialist recommends he can’t play, he gets the $124M.

He can never voluntarily retire because of $ equation.

  7. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I can’t shake the feeling that he’s going to retire right after 3/1/25.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t know what the rules are, but I think Steve Ross would be willing to pay the money owed to Tua at least for this season, and maybe some of next, and pay him on the side if he retired so it wouldn’t count against the cap. Not sure if that’s legal or not as far as NFL rules are concerned, but if he can do that, he should.

  10. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If we end up drafting a QB next year, I would think we’d probably swing for the fences and move up as high as we can in the Draft. The question: would we trade somebody to get another 1st round pick in ’25? And if so, who?

Mind you, we could always mortgage our future ’26 and ’27 1st round picks (and some change) to move up in ’25, but that’s a boom or bust proposition.

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I guess I just assumed that most of these big money athletes have some sort of disability insurance? I have no doubt it’s expensive but why the hell wouldn’t you? I mean, he’s already extremely rich, so I don’t think he or his family are going to struggle.

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If we continue with Skylar Thompson as our QB1, we might end up with a (really) losing record. And if that’s the case, we may not have to move up very far to draft our QB in ’25. Call it a ‘tank job’, but that could save many valuable resources in the name of developing Skylar… to determine if he’s our QB of the future.

I do NOT want to do that, though. I want to WIN… and WIN NOW. I’d sooner just sign Tannehill (won’t cost us any draft picks) and give it the best we’ve got.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Tannehill is not going to turn us into a winner. I mean he is okay for depth. Tua will be back. If he can stay healthy we will compete

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But until Tua comes back (IF he comes back… TBD), we’re likely to drop several games in his absense. I’d sign Tanny to help us win those games.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Likely 3-4 games in the easiest part of our schedule. I really don’t see a huge upgrade with any QB out there but we do need another QB because Tim Boyle is the only backup right now

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – I can’t think of a bigger “if” than Tua staying healthy. Even if healthy, I’m worried about how careful he has to be to try and stay healthy. It’s not a winning formula

So the question becomes: do we want to upgrade over Skylar, or do we want a new understudy for Skylar? Tim Boyle SUCKS.

Personally, I’d go for the upgrade over Skylar. JMO

  18. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Remember, Tannehill came up at A&M under Mike Sherman… and Sherman followed Tanny to Miami. Sherman runs the WCO. Tanny KNOWS the WCO and it’s concepts very well, he’ll just have adapt to the Mike McDaniel version of the WCO.

He’s the best QB available in FA, he knows the WCO, and he’s still got gas in the tank. He can also scramble.

What’s crazy(in our delusions) is that these teams continue to find success even when losing players and coaches. Saints will be in top 5 next week if this rout continues . If Tampa can beat the Lions, or vis versa, that will put them in top 7-8 easy. Packers lighting up Colts without their QB. Vikings dominating with a has been, never good. Patriots very competitive with another has been, never good.

It’s like a well built team can draft a Purdy and find success while a poorly built team will struggle no matter how much they pad the top 6 player’s pocket. Wish we had people that knew that.

Do you consider trading some of our players away to get more picks, get younger, make it easier to draft a QB and some O-line and D-line? Or, do you just deal with a shitty season, have better draft slots and reload that way, and try again next year with a rookie QB?

I see no reason to give up on the season

If we are 3-3 after week 6, there’s a lot of season left to become a better team. We can still make a run.

Not sure why so many of you have given up on week 2

If we are 1-6 heading into week 9 at Buffalo on 3 Nov, I think you could see something happen. Even at 2-5 heading into week 9 at Buffalo. We come out of that game at 2-6, stick a fork in it. Something may happen and they would have 2 days to do it as the trade deadline is 5 Nov.

  37. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Piggy,

Our last 6 games are a guantlet. In my 10-7 scenario, we had a good run against the average and bad teams but lost at least 4 of the last 6. This is the good part of our schedule. Seattle, Titans, Pats, Colts and Cards in a row where we should beat them. At least some of that isn’t likely now.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

we have a lot of time to be a better team

between now and the last 6 games

the story would have been exactly the same if we beat the bills

nothing matters unless we play well against good teams and late in the season

so every week in Sept and Oct is a chance to build

forget about the good and bad part of our schedule

we need to be a team getting better each week

if we started out 6-0, we still might struggle late in the year

I think at 1-1, you play one game at a time

it’s way to soon to talk about trades and a losing season no matter how the schedule shapes up

every team playing today will be a different team by December – the challenge for us is be a winning team late

After Thursday night our 1st pick moved from #22 to #19. After today’s games, it changed even more. The outcomes for the rest of today’s games will not affect the picks unless the Broncos and/or Bears lose.

    1st – #15

    2nd – #46

    3rd (Wilkins comp) – #98

    4th – #112

    4th (Hunt comp) – #133

    5th (From Broncos) – #141

    5th – #153

    7th – #229

    7th (From Bears) – #236

    7th (Elliott comp) – #250

Tankathon’s 1st two picks for us are:

    #15 DT Deone Walker, Kentucky

    #46 QB Cameron Ward, Miami

I’m not that high on Walker anymore.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – I just read your 12:55PM post. I didn’t see anything about trading away players, just using future picks to move up. I want to clear up some salary issues and basically stock up on draft picks for next year and beyond. We’re an old team, and it’s not sustainable. If we’re not going to win because our QB is OUT, we may as well make the best of the situation. We have so many players on 1 year deals, there’s going to be a huge roster turnover regardless. If we can get some nice draft picks for Tyreek or Waddle, or Jalen Ramsey, I’m fine with that.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

The problem with Ramsey and Reek is that no one wants to pay the top price for guys who aren’t making a huge difference on this team. Ramsey seems to have lost something, and they would be paying out top dollar and a draft pick. Honestly, except to the freewheeling Dolphins, these guys just aren’t worth it. I could see Waddle getting some offers though.

We really fucked up not paying AVG. Dude was a bargain and a playmaker. Grier thinks he’s smarter than he is.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Oh I think a bunch of teams would take Tyreek. Ramsey probably has to show a lil something to prove he can still play

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

True but it would be a 2nd for Reek and a 4th for Ramsey. If we burn it down, are we letting the same mgt team pick the groceries again?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Ouch. BB Mike and I concurred on trading away Bradley Chubb, though he’s not going to net us a 1st round pick with his current contract.

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – We have a lot of time to be worse, and we may very well be, should be to be realistic. Yes, the defense might improve, but I’ll be shocked if Skylar Thompson plays at anything resembling an average or better QB. You can’t run De’Von Achane 22 times a game and throw him 7 passes. He hasn’t been able to stay healthy with a considerable smaller workload, what do you think will happen when he gets 30 touches or so per game? I think we’re going to struggle to win games against everyone, and then be outclassed against the better teams.

  42. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Why didn’t Bengals go for 2????? They had the Chiefs defense gassed on that drive. Now missed the PAT.

  43. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

New Age, a team would only be on the hook for Tyreek’s base salary, Dolphins would be on the hook for the rest. After they reworked his contract, his 2024 base is only 1.2 million and 2025 base is only 10 million.

That team could release Tyreek after 2025 before his 2026 29.9 million base is due.

All that other money owed to Tyreek is on the Dolphins in the form of dead money pushed down the road by Grier from 2027 through 2029.

    Tyreek is very, very tradable.

the difference in the game was turnovers

those were not garbage time stats – we didn’t do much with Skyler in – and we our rushed them for the game

we had the leagues leading passer after week 1

this team is not ripe for a fire sale or any knee jerk reactions

we have to stead the ship for a few weeks without our QB

Huntley has good escapability, which he’ll need behind this line. However, he doesn’t look to run at the first sign of trouble and hangs in the pocket to deliver if he can. Looks to be able to make good throws on the run as well. Seems to stand too flat footed in the pocket at times and his windup looks like it takes forever. I’m not sure he can make quick decisions needed in this offense. Most video of him was in Ravens games with plenty of time to survey the field or stare at his target. Wish there was more film to look at, but that’s what I got from looking over any youtube videos.

McDaniel on the potential change in the offense if a different style of QB (Huntley) is needed: The history of our offense does not start with Year 1 of the Dolphins. Going all the way back to some of the concepts/beliefs we’ve developed, it wasn’t too long ago we were adapting

    Terron Armstead is day-to-day

The Dolphins are not quite ready to make a distinction on Tua and a potential trip to the IR. “There’s not enough information yet. That’s going to be driven by medical experts.”

On Tyler Huntley: It’s been apparent from a far and having some coaches that have been around him…shoot, he was replacing the league MVP and you could tell from afar that he was a guy that team absolutely believed could lead them to victory. I think that’s a huge tangible thing

The Miami Dolphins don’t worry about their offensive line.

This statement simply won’t go away because general manager Chris Grier still hasn’t figured out that what the fans are seeing and what the media continues to ask about isn’t going away.

Grier has repeatedly pointed out that the media covering the team is more worried about the offensive line than the Dolphins. On Thursday night, the Dolphins hit another statistical low.

Tua will have to wear on those new soft caps. I get it and I know it’s for safety so good but it looks as ridiculous as the stupid new kickoff

  75. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

…According to Ryan Smith of Pro Football Focus, Miami received a 30.5 pass-blocking grade against the Buffalo Bills, their lowest in almost two years.

The run game did well against the Bills, but Tua Tagovailoa had little time in the pocket, who, despite Miami’s quick-throw system on offense, needs more time when those quick routes are not available. The Bills had no problems taking away those speed routes and throws. Tyreek Hill was a non-factor in the game, and Jaylen Waddle caught four passes.

Dolphins’ biggest problems offensively start along the interior offensive line.

Tua threw three interceptions. One came off a tipped pass by Grant DuBose, and another when Robbie Chosen ran the wrong route. The third interception was on Tua, but we can also blame the offensive line for not being able to block for him. Tua dropped back, made his reads, and the pocket quickly collapsed. He tried to throw the ball out of bounds but it floated for an easy pick-six.

  76. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

….It shouldn’t come as a surprise. Tua’s quick release masks Miami’s problems with the offensive line. When asked about the line issues last month, he told the media, “I get the ball out fast.”

“Brother, I get the ball out fast, so I am confident with anybody we’ve got up there,” said Tagovailoa. “I’ll tell you that I’m confident with anybody we get out there.”

Mike McDaniel said the offensive line has “more NFL starting depth” than anyone realizes. Clearly, they are not being fair to themselves, and the evidence on the field in the first two weeks is saying something quite different.

I thought I had gotten my anger out with my small rant over the weekend, but apparently not the case. lol

I’ll start this by saying I like Mike McDaniel, have from the start. BUT….I don’t like everything. It really bothers me when he refers to players on the team as his teammates. They aren’t his teammates. He is their Coach. It’s like a parent that wants to be their child’s buddy instead of their parent….not a good thing in my opinion. They need discipline sometimes and he is the one to do it. Right now I’m referring to the recent situations with Tyreek and Tua. With Tyreek, yes, I think the police overreacted. However I think Tyreek also played his part in this. One of the first things I heard him say on the video, he didn’t want to be late, as in that’s a reason why he was speeding or whatever caused the traffic stop in the first place. Here’s the thing. Tyreek is not a rookie. He is aware of how long it takes to get to the stadium, he knows there will be traffic. How about being responsible and leaving a little earlier to get there on time instead of thinking he can speed down the street to get there instead of thinking he’s entitled, he’s the cheetah, and can get away with it. Didn’t hear anything from McDaniel that he’s spoken with him about being more responsible. Maybe he did, but it sure didn’t seem that way from the press conferences I watched. That’s what a coach should do, have rules in place and if you’re late, you pay the price for it. Discipline.

As for Tua, how many times does he have to be told to not do what he did the other night? He ran head first into a defender, he wasn’t hit. Yes, McDaniel should show concern for the player on his team(again, not his teammate, his player), but at some point, I think he needs to have a conversation with him that this stupid move on his part has put the entire team in a bad position for the season. Tua isn’t a toddler that fell and scraped his knee. He’s a grown ass man who did something stupid that was not only dangerous to himself but is also detrimental to the team, and it’s up to his COACH to let him know it, not kissing him on the forehead afterwards. I get McDaniel is quirky, but that’s a bit much to me. Sure, you can be concerned, but McDaniel is not their buddy, not their teammate, he’s the coach. There’s a difference and he needs to do his job as the coach of this team.

If he’s their teammate, we don’t have a head coach. There, I said it Hopefully my last rant of the season. LOL

JMO, but I’d prefer AFC Championship Game experience (which Tanny has, at 36 years old… not 40) over an ‘option Offense’ QB who has 8 career TDs to 7 career INTs over 4 years as a pro… and only weighing 205 pounds behind our weak O-Line. Yikes!

Tua missed the first throw, yes it’s possible the WR did something wrong. It looked like Tua threw it behind the guy. He broke off his route, and the ball hit him in the shoulder almost immediately. Ball should have been 3 feet to the right. It would have been a really tough catch. Bad play because of how it bounced off the shoulder pad, but it wasn’t the WR’s fault. Tua missed it by a little. No chemistry with the guy? WR maybe took the route too deep? Sure, but it’s still on Tua. I ain’t all torn up about that INT. Kinda bad luck.

Second INT is impossible to say unless somebody has come forward and said it was their fault. How any fan knows it was the WR’s fault is a mystery. Again, no chemistry? Young WR who screwed up? Tua adjusted on the fly and guessed wrong? Two way go? Just a boneheaded throw? WR and QB read the coverage differently and weren’t on the same page? Nobody knows. Bad luck or bad QBing? Team knows. We don’t.

Third INT is ALL on Tua. I don’t give a shit if your OL all sat down and played patty cake on the play. You still don’t do that. Eat it. Fall down…you’re really good at it. A major boneheaded play.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

1st int is all on Dubose. You put a ball on the WRs shoulder pad he should catch it every time. He just never gets his head around. 2nd int was hard to tell. Chosen clearly stumbles coming out of his break but still looked like an ill advised throw. 3rd one was all Tua

  83. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken,

That ball was behind him. No reason that ball isn’t in front of the WR. In that spot on your back shoulder is a very tough place to catch the ball. We can disagree. It should’ve been the last INT. Second one I didn’t comment on the slip because it looked like Chosen was trying to break off his route anyway, and the pass would’ve been bad regardless.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Back shoulder is often the target. It puts the defender further away from the ball. Don’t forget you catch with your arms extended so not when the ball is right on the shoulder. Dubose never got his head around. If he did its a catch

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

If the ball is out in front of Dubose the defender has a shot to pick it. He was behind Dubose so if he jumps to his left he would be in perfect position to intercept it

  84. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

If one can get both hands on the ball (ie: Dubose on Tua’s first INT) — and especially if one needn’t even leave his feet — I don’t care if the ball thrown is just slightly behind him.

Now that I think about it(!), that was my biggest gripe regarding Tannehill: he could never hit a receiver in-stride.

I’m sorry, but Dubose had every reason to catch the Tua ball on the first INT.

That’s the goal, especially when your expensive, high speed WRs that are supposed to be flying past the defenders aren’t doing anything of note.

The Miami Dolphins’ New Quarterback Tyler Huntley Might Be Their Best Healthy Option

It’s not every day that you can sign a Pro Bowl QB off a practice squad. But that’s technically what the Miami Dolphins did with Tyler Huntley.

    Published onSeptember 16, 2024 | 11:13 AM EDT

    Adam H. Beasley

Now this is intriguing: The Miami Dolphins have a new backup quarterback, and he’s not in the Kyle Shanahan/Mike McDaniel mold.

The Dolphins on Monday signed dual-threat QB Tyler Huntley (nickname: Snoop) off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad, per reports.

Huntley is actually a former Pro Bowler, although that designation doesn’t quite carry the same weight it once did.

Regardless, there’s no denying that Huntley has the best pro body of work of the Dolphins’ three available quarterbacks with Tua Tagovailoa out indefinitely with a concussion.

What Miami Dolphins Are Getting in Tyler Huntley

Huntley probably won’t get up to speed in time to start over Skylar Thompson in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.

But the Tennessee Titans-Dolphins game is on Monday night in Week 4, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he plays then should Thompson (who has a career 63.5 passer rating) continue to struggle.

Practice squad QB Tim Boyle doesn’t seem to be in the team’s plans this week.

Huntley, 26, is a local. He grew up in Dania Beach, Fla., and played his high school ball in Broward County before attending Utah.

He went undrafted in the 2020 class but spent his first four years on the Ravens’ active roster and played a big role when Lamar Jackson got hurt late in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

  92. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

He has appeared in 20 career games, starting nine, and has completed 64.6% of his passes for 1,957 yards (5.7 per attempt), eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Huntley, who was a replacement Pro Bowler in 2023 (despite starting just four games) also has 509 yards and three touchdowns on 115 career carries (4.4 per attempt).

Huntley signed with the Browns as a free agent this offseason but was cut late in camp after Cleveland couldn’t find a trade partner. He then re-signed with Baltimore as a member of the Ravens’ practice squad, but that reunion lasted just a few weeks.

The Dolphins signing a player like Huntley always made more sense than a big name like Ryan Tannehill or Tom Brady, particularly since Tagovailoa reportedly intends to resume his career when cleared.

  93. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Ya’ll Thill lovers can put that one to bed…lol.

He has no desire to be a backup and will wait for his “spot” as a starter to open up.

Tyler Huntley Signing Suggest Important Changes Coming to Mike McDaniel’s Miami Dolphins Offense

The Miami Dolphins’ offense hasn’t been great in a long time. But Mike McDaniel hints that important changes could be coming with Tua Tagovailoa out.

    MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. —

Tyler Huntley’s signing with the Miami Dolphins sent a blast of excitement and hope through a Miami Dolphins fanbase that spent the weekend demoralized by Tua Tagovailoa’s latest concussion.

But what intrigues us the most about the Dolphins’ decision to sign Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad? It shows that Mike McDaniel is not going to stubbornly cling to an offensive scheme that is tailored for pocket passers like Tua.

Will Mike McDaniel Adapt the Miami Dolphins’ Offense?

McDaniel has often said that Tagovailoa is the perfect quarterback for his system. Yet Tagovailoa and Huntley — a dual-threat QB with big-play ability but so-so accuracy — couldn’t be more different.

So it says something important — and good — about McDaniel that in this time of crisis, he sought out the best available quarterback, and not the quarterback who could be the best facsimile of Tua.

  95. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

the notion that we didn’t sign Tannehill means we didn’t try doesn’t hold much weight
