2024 Season – Game 3 – Dolphins @ Seahawks

This 2024 NFL Season was supposed to be a Super Bowl run for our Miami Dolphins, at least that was the hype. Here at FMU, we looked at weaknesses on this team, more specifically, the trenches. We were very skeptical of the offensive line, and why shouldn’t we have been? We didn’t upgrade, we lost 2 of our best linemen in OC Connor Williams and RG Robert Hunt. Our starting LG is last year’s backup who wasn’t even on the roster to start to the 2023 season. Our starting OC, Aaron Brewer was jettisoned by the Titans, and although our previous OC Connor Williams had some snapping issues, his pass and run blocking were both excellent. Our starting RG was last year’s backup OC, Liam Eichenberg. RT Austin Jackson is basically a constant. Our starting LT, now fighting off a shoulder injury has been playing for 13 years in the NFL and has never completed a full season. Don’t expect 2024 to be the first. He’s already come out of the game with injuries, and although he’s our best, he’s also fragile. While we’re speaking of fragile, did I mention our starting QB has another concussion?

If you hate to read it, scroll on by, because I’m going to remind all of you how very much I was against the Miami Dolphins handing our QB Tua Tagovailoa a huge contract. Mostly, the reason was his injury history, but a fair percentage of that was his inability to show up in big games. Well, both were on display last week in our first matchup with the Buffalo Bills. Tua did his best to prove me right on both counts, completing 25 passes for 239 yards, 1 TD and 3 INT’s. WR Grant Dubose should have got his head around, WR Robbie Chosen ran the wrong route. Please STOP! We have WR’s Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, TE Jonnu Smith, RB’s De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright, the ball didn’t have to go to either of those guys, #1 makes that decision, he throws the ball. I don’t need to tell you that relying on 2 guys who have been here no more than 2 weeks is absurd. So now we’re left with our backup QB Skylar Thompson for a minimum of 4 games as QB Tua Tagovailoa goes on IR.

There’s starting to be a little more scrutiny of Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel. Sure, he’s a likable guy, he’s funny, amusing, and supposedly an offensive genius. The problem is, when teams have figured out what type of defense to play against our offense to shut it down, Mike McDaniel has yet to find the solution to keep scoring like we scored on all the other teams. The tape is out there, teams know to have 2 safeties high and take away the long ball, keep everything in front of them, and as long as it’s executed well enough, they take both WR’s Tyreek Hll and Jaylen Waddle out of their game. I honestly have no idea if Skylar Thompson will be running the same offense Tua Tagovailoa was running, but I don’t think Skylar can have the same timing and anticipation that Tua had. We’ll see how much the offense is more tailored to Skylar, and I guess we’ll get somewhat of an idea if our season is lost or not.

I mentioned the trenches earlier, and now I’m going to touch on the defensive side. The defense was a strength for this team, at least until the injuries started coming and never stopped. The defensive line of Zach Sieler, Raekwon Davis and Christian Wilkins was a strength. Sieler is still there, but now he’s next to NT Benito Jones, and then next to him is DE Calais Campbell. Campbell is still a great player, but at 38, he can’t be expected to play high snap counts anymore, but the rotation was supposed to be the hallmark of the D-line. Tsunamis, waves of players, but that turned out to be false advertising, as we only have 6 DL, Sieler, Jones and Campbell, Emmanuel Ogbah, Brandon Pili and Da’Shawn Hand. That’s no tsunami. Now sometimes we’ll play a 4 man front, and we’ll employ speed packages with OLB’s Jaelan Phillips, Chop Robinson, Quinton Bell and probably Mo Kamara at some point, but in 2 games, I don’t think NFL teams are fearing our defensive line. Buffalo RB James Cook averaged 7 yards per carry (11-78) and managed 3 TD’s, 2 rushing, 1 receiving.

The Seattle Seahawks are 2-0, and they are always a tough get at home. We’ll be facing 2 former Dolphins players on Sunday, OC Connor Williams, and the always under appreciated ILB Jerome Baker (#55). There will be no hype from me about what I expect from this team right now. I have no idea and little expectation of what QB Skylar Thompson can do with this offense. We picked up QB Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens PS, and even though Sonny loves him, I’m not any more optimistic about Huntley leading us to victories in Tua’s absence. Our mighty WR corps is anything but, once you get past Hill and Waddle. Grant Dubose, Malik Washington (who is banged up) and Braxton Berrios, who has yet to record a reception. I hope our defense with all its tsunamis carries the day, because that offense could be downright ugly!

With the Jets victory, all of our own picks went up 1 spot.

    Just to keep Tim updated we have 14, 45, 98(comp), 111, 133(comp), 141(Denver), 154, 227( Chicago), 229, 250(comp)

    Mike,

You are crazy! This offense can’t be ugly!! We have a genius HC, the #1 paid WR in the NFL, the #11 paid WR, and the fastest team in the NFL by every media prognosticator’s own words. OL is not a problem and even our amazing GM said only fans worry about stupid things like OL. Don’t look at the numbers! Don’t see the 28 ranking because it’s all a lie! This offense is set to wow the world! Just wait for everyone to be completely healthy!!!!

This is exactly what our media and leadership in this country do as well, outside of sports. Don’t believe your lying eyes! The economy is amazing!! Dolphins 2024 Superbowl incoming!

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The key to this game will be running the ball. Seahawks are #2 vs the pass. Granted that was vs Bo Nix/Broncos and Jacoby Brissett/Patriots. They do have a good young secondary though. The Seahawks run defense is #22. The Pats ran for 185 vs the Seahawks last week in their overtime loss to them.

On the other side, our pass defense is #5 and run defense is #15. If Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker is a no go, they have no run game and will be one dimensional. Their #2 RB Zach Charbonnet had to start last week and only managed 38 yards on 14 carries. On the season he has 22 carries for 50 yards. He is a receiving threat though.

Geno had to throw 44 times vs the Pats but he completed 33 for 327. DJ Metcalf caught 10 for 129, 1 TD and Smith-Njigba caught 12 for 117. Our defense will need to shut these WR’s down and get after the QB. Get some turnovers!

Back to the offense. RUN THE DAMN BALL! Make it easier on Skylar. No turnovers!

Three out of four starting LB’s for the Seahawks will either be out or playing injured. RUN THE DAMN BALL.

Although, our LT and both starting OG’s will be playing with injured shoulders so…

This may be fucked up, but when I think of Tua and the Miami Dolphins, all I can really focus on is how we get out of destroying our cap space for the future. I don’t know how it’s going to go down, but I can’t even waste time on imagining him playing again when just about every one of us realizes his next hit is his next concussion. It’s such a downer! Now we have to draft a QB, and of course, we all also know how fucked we are in that department. Can we finally get lucky???

2 years ago I went to training camp practice with my cousin, he said, Skylar should be starting over Tua, after hitting deep pass after deep pass (mostly frozen ropes)

Where is that Skylar, the one with great pocket presence and a big accurate arm?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Honestly, I have no recollection of Skylar Thompson ever throwing an accurate deep ball. Most of my memories are fluttering wobblers that are off target. I do remember the Fest game against Minny when Tua was OUT, he had one nice drive, although a we had about 8 penalties and didn’t score, but he may have thrown for 100 yards on that drive, only they didn’t count. I often hear he has a “big arm”, but I haven’t seen it happen

  23. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Ok, time to retool, rethink things and kick some ass. This may be good for our offense. It has become too predictable. Shake things up. Use your TEs. Use an extra OL and pound on some people. Set up some big running plays off the tendencies you’ve shown in the passing game. Move your QB around and throw from different spots…do some misdirection. Football isn’t rocket science. It still comes down to talent, but if you don’t have the talent at QB, you kinda gotta win different ways. If/when Tua comes back, it will actually help our offense because it will develop and show teams other things.

    Questionable

    S K’Von Wallace (shoulder)
    TE Pharaoh Brown (foot)
    LB Boye Mafe (knee)
    WR Laviska Shenault Jr. (foot)

  32. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Will Miami Dolphins Have Terron Armstead, Raheem Mostert?

McDaniel, asked if Mostert would return to the lineup after missing Week 2, said, “We’ll see. … [I’m] pessimistic that he’ll play, but I can’t rule it out.”

That means another big role for Achane. The Dolphins also will count on Jeff Wilson Jr. and Jaylen Wright to contribute.

One player who definitely won’t play? Wide receiver Grant DuBose, is dealing with a non-season-ending shoulder injury. McDaniel ruled him out of Sunday’s game.

So that does mean we’ll see the NFL debut of Malik Washington, who missed the first two games of the season with a quadriceps injury but returned to practice this week? Likely not. He is also doubtful, per the team’s Friday injury report.

“He’s trending the right way,” McDaniel said of Washington. “He’s either playing under the expectation that we’re not going to risk anything or he just missed [the cutoff] by a day or so.”

Either way, the Dolphins will almost certainly activate Erik Ezukanma from the practice squad for Sunday’s game, particularly after cutting Robbie Chosen earlier this week.

Tua Tagovailoa, meanwhile, is healthy enough to make the trip to Seattle with his teammates — a wonderful sign as he continues his recovery from last week’s concussion. Tagovailoa is on injured reserve and will miss at least the next four games.

As for the Seahawks? They are even more banged up.

Nine starters missed either some or all of practice Thursday due to injury: LB Uchenna Nwosu (knee), NT Jarran Reed (knee), RB Kenneth Walker III (oblique), LB Jerome Baker (hamstring), OT George Fant (toe), TE Noah Fant (toe), WR Tyler Lockett (thigh), DE Leonard Williams (knee), and CB Devon Witherspoon (hamstring).

Walker has led his team in rushing yards every year he’s been in the league. If he cannot go, the Dolphins can expect to see a lot of Zach Charbonnet, who is averaging 2.3 yards per carry this year and 3.9 for his career.

  33. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Well, no Chosen or Dubose for this game.

Did Tua really have a concussion? Nothing I saw showed that, more like an issue with his neck

seemed similar to Waddle going into the tent for concussion protocol

I didn’t get to watch that game last night. I saw what y’all posted about the Nebraska QB.

How did Luke Altmyer look for Illinois? He’s a junior so I don’t know if he is one who will declare for the draft or stay one more year.

He is a red shirt junior (4th year) but it’s only his second year starting and last year #’s were meh.

He would be a day 3 or UDFA IMO but I have not watched him.

He has led them to wins over #19 Kentucky and now #22 Nebraska. Has 10 TD’s and 0 INT’s in 4 games.

  46. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I am looking forward to watching USC QB Miller Moss today at 2:30 at #18 Michigan.

He’s one I am keeping a close eye on. He is also a red shirt junior and his first year starting so not sure if he declares either. Looked very good in their upset win over LSU.

I’m still waiting for Drew Allar to reach his potential. I don’t think that James Franklin and his staff do a great job of developing their QBs.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I was wondering the same thing. He was highly touted but not showing much. He could be a day 2 draft steal if selected by the right team with the right coaches to develop him behind someone.

My guess, with 2025 draft possibly having a big QB class, Allar stays for his senior year.

Big guy with decent mobility also.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Christian Hackenberg was a top ten pick with his two years with Bill O’Brien. He took a ver noticable step back when Franklin got there. McSorley was just a gamer, physical tools that weren’t off the chart, he just had that it factor.

  47. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Another day 3 or UDFA QB I like is Haynes King from Georgia Tech. Red shirt junior but 3rd year starting. Last 2 years were meh but he’s playing very well this year and he is a dual threat QB, 6 passing TD’s, 1 INT and 3 rushing TD’s.

They play at #19 Louisville at 2:30 on ESPN2.

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I am keeping an eye on all possible QB’s who may enter the draft. We should draft a top talent, but I also think we should double down on QB with 3 7th round picks or get an UDFA.

If they are only going to play the starting QB 1 series in preseason, might as well have 4 QB’s in TC/preseason.

Yeah, he had a good season last year. Haven’t kept up with him yet this year. I think he is projected as a mid to late 3rd round pick. Draftbuzz has him ranked (right now) as the #5 TE for the 2025 draft. We would have to take him at pick #98.

I would still like to wait and take Mason Taylor a round or two later.

  57. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Joe Schad, Palm Beach Post

SEATTLE – The Miami Dolphins elevated wide receivers Erik Ezukanma and Dee Eskridge for Sunday’s game at the Seattle Seahawks.

They’ll join Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Braxton Berrios as available receivers.

Seattle-area tight end Tanner Conner can also play wide receiver. And so can running back De’Von Achane.

Grant DuBose has been placed on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury.

Miami also elevated quarterback Tim Boyle to the 53-man roster. He’s the Dolphins’ third quarterback now, along with Skylar Thompson and Tyler “Snoop” Huntley.

Ezukanma has good size and decent speed but he just hasn’t gained traction since he was drafted in the fourth round in 2022.

  58. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Brian, I responded above about Warren. I wanted to add, IMO, no way he lasts past the mid second round. I think he is the best all round TE to be in the draft next year. He will be better than Michael Mayer in the NFL. Not many TE’s his size move as well as him. When I watched him last year, I did not think his was a big TE because the way he moves.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

he can block well, catch well, pass the ball and also run the ball out of the backfield . They’ve used him in a lot of goal line packages. He would be the ultimate chess piece for MM

I 100% agree and I have an idea. Trade Jannu before the draft. Then draft Warren in the 2nd and Mason Taylor in the 5th.

Get a season under their belt then Smythe is gone after 2025. Our Te’s going forward will be Hill, Warren and Taylor.

      Wishful thinking. lol

I’m not giving up on Jonnu, he was starting to show his value last game, if not for DuBose and Chosen it might very well have meant something

I blame those 2 WR schmucks for Tua’s injury indirectly, if not for the score we wouldn’t have seen the frustration run by Tua

IDK how you guys can watch a lot of college football, the PIs, 4 hr games, horrible officiating…

watched all of the UM game just because they have a good team and it’s painful, 3.5 hrs with 13 minutes to go

This one hurts, had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of years ago in Vegas on SB Sunday at a casino, where he was signing autographs

My brother bought the autographed and framed picture, it’s on his living room wall

We were the first ones in line, so got to talk to him for about 5 minutes, he was very nice to me

Funny how dudes can bond over something gross.

After I got to work this morning, I was standing under our front awning getting some fresh air. No traffic. We are on the corner of an intersection. I had an itch in my nose and realized I had a big booger. The light turned red and this big pickup came rolling slowly up to the light. Dude looked at me digging, I looked at him and he yelled “Did you get it?” I pulled the booger out and held it high and yelled back “Got it!” Just as the light turned green, he rolled on sticking his hand out the window and gave me a thumbs up.

    Cool moment. lol

I didn’t realize WR D”Wayne Eskridge was a 2020 2nd round pick of the Seahawks.

Went on IR in 21′ for bad concussion and IR 22′ for broken hand. Then in 23′ was suspended by NFL for personal conduct domestic incident. He was released by Seahawks in final cuts this year.

He was elevated with EZ for the game today.

  77. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Interesting snippet from an interview this morning, Marc Malusis “Moose” from WFAN in NY asking some “expert” on NFL topics and then they get to Tua, and Moose asks this guy (didn’t get his name) if he thinks Tua Tagovailoa will play again for the Miami Dolphins. He says he probably would have played either this week or next week if he was on a different team, the Dolphins are just being very cautious as they should. It’s such a strange situation, the Dolphins are basically forced, for PR reasons to be more careful with Tua because of the perception they are throwing him to the wolves, when it’s totally his choice. Now I get how fragile he is, and how it doesn’t take much of a hit to concuss him, but that’s up to him. If he wants to play, he’s going to play. If/when he decides to retire, that will also be up to him, not the Dolphins. Either way, we best be drafting a QB next season, and the Tua situation will take care of itself. We can’t rely on him, that would be foolish.

  78. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    LOL @ Bri – I can see the interview . . .

Dolphins: “So tell me, what injuries have you had recently?”

Player: “Well, I broke my hand last season”

Dolphins: “Hmm, that doesn’t sound that bad, I don’t think you’re a fit here”

Player: “But I had a concussion two years ago!”

Dolphins: “How much time did you miss?”

Player: “I missed the entire season, it was really bad!” I don’t remember anything from 2022!”

Dolphins: “Wow, that’s waaaay different, you got yourself a job pal! Welcome to Miami!”

  79. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Justin Jefferson now on ESPN they showed his long TD against SF last week

The back judge was running right along with the players enroute to the EZ

’bout FN time they hired someone that can actually run to officiate up close, tired of seeing these 90 yr old guys officiating games

  80. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The pickins are slim at WR, you do what you can

I don’t expect much from Wayne Eskridge today, although he’s playing against his former team and is a 4.39 guy

  81. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Which post? The 11:23AM? If that’s the one, maybe we need someone with less talent, more desire, and the ability to actually be on the field a few games which can give them some continuity, rather than throwing a different guy out there each week. Really hoping EZ can stay healthy and show us something. I like him, but man he’s looking more fragile than Tua so far

Under 7 min to go and a 1 point lead, Eagles try a 60 yard FG instead of punting and pinning the Saints. Missed, now Saints have short field. WTF

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

3rd really bad decision from Sirianni. Their defense has held the Saints to 2 FGs and instead of putting it in the Ds hands he leaves the Saints in a position to take the lead with one first down.

Really dumb play, could cost them the game.
