2024 Season – Game 4 – Titans @ Dolphins

Wow, Monday Night Football! What a marquis matchup we have here! The 0-3 Tennessee Titans come in to Miami to Hard Rock Stadium to face off against the last place 1-2 Miami Dolphins! It certainly looks bad, this is not what the NFL wants of course, but maybe it is. Maybe this is the game that catapults a team that looked like they were ruined to a successful season, while the other one falls further into a hole extremely difficult to climb out of. Neither team has played well, but while the expectations for the Tennessee Titans were modest, expected to be a sub .500 club (6-11, 7-10), the Dolphins, depending on what site you visited, were expected to compete for the AFC East crown with the Jets and Bills with 10-7 or 11-6 record. Every week is a must win the NFL, but if the Dolphins are truly to be a playoff contender, this win carries an awful lot of weight. It’s not a division game, but it is a conference game, and the Dolphins are 1-1 against the AFC with a W against the Jags, and a loss against the Bills.

In my last article I told you that things will shift, and I do still believe that. While I also feel we fell short of building the trenches properly, this team has far too much talent at the skill positions to be scoring only 11.0 points per game. Of course, the catalyst, QB Tua Tagovailoa is OUT, and will remain OUT until at least Week 8, but Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, De’Von Achane, Jonnu Smith, Jaylen Wright and Raheem Mostert (if healthy), should be enough to score more than 11 points, regardless of who is playing QB. So who will be the QB against the Titans for the Dolphins? Skylar Thompson is injured, and by the Gods, he was putrid after having a long week from Friday to the following Sunday, in addition to having 2 years to fully digest this offense. He looked lost out there, confused, hesitant, unsure, inaccurate, indecisive, and just so disappointing. He can no longer be considered the backup or have any future aspirations of being the starting QB of this team. That leaves Tim Boyle, who at the very least looked like an NFL QB that belonged on the field, or Tyler Huntley who has had little time to digest the playbook after being signed from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad on 9/17. Huntley is a better athlete and his legs give him a dual threat, although he’s no Lamar Jackson. No matter who starts on Monday Night Football, they have to threaten the defense down the field.

There are quite a few players listed as questionable for this MNF matchup.

CB Kendall Fuller (concussion)

OT Terron Armstead (concussion)

WR Malik Washington (quad)

RB Raheem Mostert (chest)

CB Siran Neal (?)

FB Alec Ingold (?)

QB Skylar Thompson (ribs)

LB David Long (hamstring)

OT Kendall Lamm played well enough in T-Stead’s place, but it would sure be nice to see the rookie Patrick Paul get some reps so we know that’s one less spot we have to draft for next season. We spent a 4th RD pick on RB Jaylen Wright (5’10 210) from Tennessee, acquired by trading our 2025 3rd RD pick. Is it possible we can make that trade look good by actually using the guy? 7 carries in 3 games, while we wear out 5’9 190 LB RB De’Von Achane with 43 carries for 150 yards (3.5 YPC), along with 17 receptions for 173 yards. 60 touches in 3 games seems like a lot for smallish back who had lots of trouble staying on the field last season, missing 6 games. When he was used sparingly, 103 carries for the season, he averaged over 7.8 YPC. That’s a huge difference. I understand Raheem Mostert is OUT, but isn’t that why you drafted Jaylen Wright in the first place? All over the NFL I see rookie RB’s tearing it up, and YES, I’m aware Achane did just that last season, but we also saw what happened when you use him a lot, he breaks down. Let’s get Jaylen Wright some more work, shall we?

The defense has had its ups and downs. They spotted Seattle 17 first quarter points before buckling down. For the most part, the defense feeds off the offense, and if that’s the case, the defense must be starving, because this offense has sucked since the first snap of the season. Despite moving the ball against Jacksonville, we scored only a TD in the first half, and then in the second half, just a TD and 2 FG’s, one as time expired for the W. Against the Bills, with Tua as the QB, we scored 10 first half points, but also turned the ball over 3 times, (3 INT’s). Against Seattle, it was worse, much worse. We managed only a FG in Seattle, where instead of the 12th man, it seemed like 12 million. We need to score some points against the Titans on MNF, it’s as simple as that. The Titans defense is right around our defense, a couple of notches worse, allowing 26 PPG, while our defense is at 24 PPG.

Head Coach Mike McDaniel has uncharacteristically taken a lot of heat early on in this season. Who could have thought it possible thought after scoring 496 points (29.2 PPG) that fans would be calling for Mike McDaniel’s head after 3 games? I think it’s crazy myself, it’s just too early, and as we all know painfully well Dolphins fans, it ain’t how you start, it’s how you finish! How many seasons have we gone through that? While Rock is still 100% correct that all the games count, if we finish strong and end up 10-7, or 11-6, and we’re playing well, not a soul will care about our 1-2 start. It’s time to set things right, and there is no question there is a lot of pressure on this team to perform better. Not sure if Skylar Thompson will be healthy enough to suit up as the 2nd or 3rd QB, I’d prefer someone lose his uniform. In any case, the way the NFL has been churning through QB’s, we might need 3 on Monday night. I would also tend to think whomever starts will not have a long leash if the offense is stagnant. Whether it’s QB Tyler Huntley or QB Tim Boyle, they’re going to have to earn the right to stay on the field.

Have I brought up the fact that we gave both of our top WR’S really nice extensions before the season started? YEAH! We gave Tyreek Hill a 3YR/$90M extension, and Jaylen Waddle got a 3 YR/$84.75M extension! Hey, did I mention what type of production we’ve received from these 2 players?

Tyreek Hill – 3 games – 7 catches, 130 yards, 1 TD / 1 rush, 12 yards

Jaylen Waddle – 3 games – 13 receptions, 176 yards, 0 TD’s /. 2 rushes, 7 yards

That’s right folks, last season, these were stats for 1 game, and not necessarily a great game either. It’s painful, and yes, it is an indictment on Mike McDaniel at just how ineffective this offense has been. He has to turn it around, no matter who the QB is. We can’t continue to be this poor, and still utter the phrase “offensive genius”. I for one am not carrying a pitchfork ready to storm Miami Gardens FL and try to get our Head Coach fired. I mentioned last week that the Baltimore Ravens are 1-2 as well, and QB Lamar Jackson has played all 3 games. Granted, the Ravens have scored 71 points, more palatable than our 33. The LA Rams are also 1-2, and they were supposed to also be a contender. What I’m saying is it’s still early, we win this game, even win ugly, and then we move on to the next one, but we have to come away with the “W” at home, knowing well that our schedule just gets more difficult when we come back from the BYE, whether Tua is our QB at that juncture or not. My feeling is that he will be, no one should be making this decision other than #1, QB Tua, along with his wife and family. In spite of that, the optics can never be good for this team, especially if he goes down again.

Not to say “I told you so”, but I did. His health will be our problem until he miraculously gets past them or he decides to retire. Due to the money in the contract, unless he gets hurt again, or even whether he doesn’t play another down for us this season, the future cap ramifications will haunt us unless he retires. The public relations nightmare, that we’re throwing him out to the slaughter will also be there as long as he’s on this team. It’s not a pretty picture for us, or him for that matter. I believe, ultimately the blame will be on the Miami Dolphins if Tua plays again and is concussed again. I hope for both his sake and the team’s sake that after that hit, he does the prudent thing for the rest of his life and retires, and enjoys his life with his family. Let’s not forget he’s already earned $73M. That’s a helluva lot more than any of us stiffs who root for him, and I think he might be able to just scrape by if he never plays again, but once again, that’s up to Tua.

Bo Nix finished with 60 Pass yds. Among starting QBs with at least 20 passes in a game, that’s the fewest Pass yds in a win since Eli Manning in 2007 who had 59 Pass yds in a 13-10 win at Dolphins in Week 8 that season.

Anyone watching Minny vs GB? I have the sound down and missed it. On the muffed punt, why wasn’t it a GB TD? Why did they get the ball at the 3?

In my lifetime you’ve never been able to advance a muff, way it’s always been, not sure why it doesn’t make any sense

It makes perfect sense to me. Why should you be able to advance say a line drive kick, that hits one of the up men on a kickoff?

    I explained above

it would be a cheap TD, based on a technicality, if the ball barely nicks someone and it’s taken to the house

    ——————————

Garbage. Kicking the ball off an up man is literally not a thing except for onside kicks which is very low percentage for the kicking team. If it was a thing, teams would do it to possibly gain possession all the time, they wouldn’t be deterred by not being able to advance it.

“We’ve got a great chance to just nick the shoulder and get the ball, but we’re not going to do it because we can’t advance it.” Uh-huh, right.

The only other case of a live ball being dead on recovery that I can think of is the ‘advancing a fumble rule’ for the offense. That came about directly to close a loophole the offense could exploit from the holy roller.

There is nothing the kicking team can exploit on kickoffs and certainly not punts for that rule to makes sense.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The idea of teams kicking the ball off trying to just nick a shoulder, get the ball and running it back for a TD…lol. Are you kidding me with that? That sounds like something a kid would say.

  32. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Lol..lots of chatter

You can NEVER advance a muffed punt…it’s always been that way..right?!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We’re past that. It’s a rule, always has been.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

i did speed scroll…thank god it was settled…lol

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

lol, I get it. Yeah, I’m not arguing it isn’t a rule. I feel silly I forgot it.

I’m just defending my position that it’s an inconsistent rule regarding live balls.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        Lol…how so? It hasn’t been possessed…

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        It’s 4th down and the O gives it up…

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        Ok…lol

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

How can the kicking team gain possession?

Because it’s a live ball once it’s touched by the receiving team.

Possession shouldn’t come in to it. Nobody possess it.

It’s dead if the kicking team touches it first. It’s live if the receiving team touches it first.

Once it’s live, it’s live…only the rule says it sort of isn’t.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        *Possesses

sheesh, there are a lot of esses in that word.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

we’re talking about advancing the football…right?

        You possess…after a muff…done…right…you CANNOT advane.

        It’s ALWAYS been a rule…lmfao

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yes, you can name the rule, and how long it’s been around, and put some CAPS in there for emphasis.

I am not saying it isn’t a rule. I am not saying it hasn’t been a rule for a long time. I am saying the rule in regards to how it treats a live ball is inconsistent with basically every other rule regarding live balls. By extension, I’m saying it’s a dumb rule and shouldn’t be a rule.

Do you have anything cogent to say in regard to what I’m talking about? For instance, can you show that it actually is consistent with other live ball rules? Or try, as Steve did, to give a reason it needs to exist to stop an exploit?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Rules change all the time. I referenced earlier an article from 2013 that talked about the muffed kick rule, how antiquated it is, and how it should be removed.

Steve mentioned above you used to not be able to advance a fumble in college football. That changed, because it’s dumb. I am placing the rule we’re talking about in the same category. It makes no sense to arbitrarily say you can gain possession of this live ball, but you can’t advance it.

  36. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Speaking of changes to rules, I saw rules regarding onside kicks that changed that I was unaware of. I knew that starting this year you have to declare you are doing an onside kick. You also cannot do an onside kick until the 4th quarter, and you have to be behind. I didn’t catch those last two until the GB game today.

NFL standings, Week 4: All 3 of Dolphins’ division rivals lost Sunday

    Adam Stites September 29, 2024 11:15 pm

September was a bleak month for the Miami Dolphins, but it has a chance to end on a positive note for the team. In Week 4, the rest of the AFC East left the door ajar for the Dolphins to make up some ground in a race that was quickly slipping away.In the first slate of games on Sunday, the New York Jets couldn’t get their offense going against the Denver Broncos and lost, 10-9. Then in the later group of games, the San Francisco 49ers breezed through the New England Patriots for a 30-13 victory. To cap the night, the Baltimore Ravens bulldozed the Buffalo Bills in a 35-10 primetime blowout. With all three of the Dolphins’ division rivals losing Sunday, here’s the state of the AFC East heading into Miami’s Monday night contest against the Tennessee Titans:

Buffalo Bills: 3-1 (1-0 vs. division)

New York Jets: 2-2 (1-0 vs. division)

Miami Dolphins: 1-2 (0-1 vs. division)

New England Patriots: 1-3 (0-1 vs. division)

The Dolphins’ loss to the Bills in Week 2 means that Miami can’t move into second place Monday, regardless of the result. But a win would move the team just a game behind first place as it tries to tread water without Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback.

The playoffs are still way off on the horizon, but if they started today, this would be the seeding:

Kansas City Chiefs: 4-0 (3-0 vs. AFC)

Houston Texans: 3-1 (2-0 vs. AFC)

Buffalo Bills: 3-1 (2-1 vs. AFC)

Pittsburgh Steelers: 3-1 (2-1 vs. AFC)

New York Jets: 2-2 (2-1 vs. AFC)

Indianapolis Colts: 2-2 (1-1 vs. AFC)

Los Angeles Chargers: 2-2 (1-2 vs. AFC)

The Dolphins would slide into one of the wild card slots if they manage to beat the Titans.

Simmons would have been a big handful for Brewer. If he doesn’t play it’ll be a big plus for us.

    steve,

I never know what to think around here. One day, we can’t question coaches because they’re professionals and what do fans know. The next day, they can’t even coach a lineman or evaluate them. I give up! Lol

I’m not doing laundry this evening. They are on their own from now on. Unless I actually need to do laundry. 🥴

Mets playoffs on the line today and the Dolphins tonight. Nothing like sports stress. 🙄

I was just looking at the MLB playoff bracket; I didn’t realize they have done away with the one game playoff for tied records and moved to a similar system to all other sports (head to head, etc). Cards haven’t really been playoff contenders for a few years, so I’ve recently been tuned out by this time; been watching the Mets though since we have so many Mets fans on the board.

Dolphins elevated WR Dee Eskridge to their active roster for tonight’s game vs. the Titans.

After yesterday’s games, we dropped from picking #7 to #10. A win tonight could drop us another 10 spots which is fine. lol

If Seattle loses at the Lions tonight, it will weaken our SOS and we might not drop more than 8 spots.

If we lose, we will be in the top 5, possibly as high as #3.

Kong, it’s a Mets thing. It’s more torturous than the Dolphins. 😂

After every games results are entered into the Tankathon database and the draft order is reset. Once it does this, it generates a new 3 round mock draft for each team. After yesterdays update, their simulator selected for us:

    #10 DT Deone Walker, 6’6 348, Kentucky

    #42 OG Tate Ratledge, 6’6 310, Georgia

    #98 QB Miller Moss, 6’2 205, USC

    #99 TE Luke Lachey, 6’6 253, Iowa

Their simulator gave us TE Lachey at #99 with TE Tyler Warren still on the board. boo

Every year we go to Cherokee, NC and then to Gatlinburg in October for my birthday, the fall color change and to trout fish on the reservation.

I got a call a little while ago from the hotel I always stay at in Cherokee, NC and they had to cancel our reservation due to all the flooding and damaged/washed out roads and bridges. Sad to hear that. I didn’t realize it was that bad until I started watching the weather channel this morning.

I didn’t know until this morning that 2 major interstates are washed out in areas, I-40 and I-26.

Gatlinburg is fine from what I hear.
