2024 Season – Game 5 – Dolphins @ Patriots

It’s funny, just going through the formality of typing out the title of the 2024 Season, Game 5 etc. felt like an exercise in futility. I can’t believe we’re back here again, that sad, dark place when you know your team is doomed, not only for this season, but way beyond, especially if QB Tua Tagovailoa holds this team prisoner by not retiring. I desperately wanted them to protect themselves, but oh boy, the love affair with HC Mike McDaniel and QB Tua Tagovailoa was hot and heavy, and both Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier threw caution to the wind and gave him a massive contract. How many times did I stress that it was one season, and how he played that season so carefully as not to get injured. That extra careful play just doesn’t work in the NFL, not when you play the better teams. Tua will come back, that much is certain, but what version do we get of Tua, and for how long? Even worse, what will our record be when he comes back, and will it even be fair to expect the Dolphins to pull themselves out of a 1-5 start?

There are so many decisions Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel made, and it’s so unfortunate that it appears they made the wrong ones on most counts. Let’s start with one of my favorite ones. DT Christian Wilkins, drafted in RD 1, 13th overall, and all that guy did here was bust his ass for 5 seasons, playing tons of snaps and every single the last 3 years of that contract. What do we do? Let-him-go! “Ohhh, he wanted too much money, you can’t pay him that!!!” Well, we should have said that and more when it came to everyone’s favorite QB Tua Tagovailoa who is now one hit away from maybe not even being able to make the decision on whether or not he should play. Oh, he’s coming back, probably Week 8, which coincidentally is the Fest game against Arizona. The question on everyone’s mind though is how long will he last. It will be that way for as long as he plays in the NFL, that’s just the way it is. These are the tough decisions GM’s have to make, and I’ll tell you Chris Grier keeps making the wrong choices.

Besides Christian Wilkins, we had drafted OG Robert Hunt in the 2nd RD (pick #39) in the 2020 NFL Draft. All Robert Hunt did was bust his ass for 4 seasons playing in 50 of 51 games in his first 3 seasons before last season, where he played in 11 of 17 due to injury. No, he was never an all pro, or pro bowler, but you could easily make the argument that he was our best OL during his tenure here in Miami. So what we do, Chris Grier? Give him a contract? “Ohhh, he’s asking for too much money, we can’t pay him that!!!”. Say goodbye to our best OL, and one that we drafted. It’s not like don’t have one of the top 5 offensive lines in football, so why keep one of your own who was a solid, dependable, above average player? Our LT is in has last season, and he misses so much time. While that’s good for rookie Patrick Paul, maybe we could have saved the money on Terron Armstead, and just played Paul right out of the chute. Let’s face it, Chris Grier is playing the O-line by the seat of his pants. There’s clearly no plan, with the majority of the line departing next season in FA, or retirement. LT Terron Armstead is retiring, LG Robert Jones is a FA, C Aaron Brewer is under contract through 2026, RG Liam Eichenberg is a UFA next season, and RT Austin Jackson is also signed through 2026.

Think about it like this if you will. You’re in the medieval era, you build a magnificent castle while you’re surrounded by hostile armies. You decide, you know what, the castle is made of bricks, and it looks great, we don’t need to spend a lot on moats, or heavy iron gates. You can just imagine what would happen to that castle or your QB Tua Tagovailoa when you neglect to protect them. Tua’s injury history was well known here, and what’s worse, a concussion problem in a league where this has been a long battle between former players and the NFL, and the Miami Dolphins organization doesn’t want this type of thing ruining it’s product or image. In essence, this is precisely why we put Tua on IR, while other players who were concussed as recently as last week might even play this week. It was such a risky decision to think Tua wouldn’t get hurt again, yet we pushed all our chips into the pot anyway.

Then we can discuss the backup QB situation. We had Mike White, and 3rd year 7th RD pick (pick 247), picked 15 spots before Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy. I know some of y’all don’t think much of Brock Purdy, but compared to Skylar Thompson, who’s been here 2 seasons and by all rights should know Mike McDaniels offense backwards and forward, he looked lost out there. Yes, it was in Seattle, where the crowd is deafening, but they practice for that, don’t they? QB Tim Boyle looked far less bothered by the noise, or not really having time to learn the offense, or read a defense due to the leaky protection. So we pick up QB Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. It’s an awful ot to ask a QB to digest such an overly complicated offense in just 2 weeks, and of course we would think that they would simplify things, maybe eliminate the complicated motions because timing is so important for that. This is where the HC Mike McDaniel has to take some heat. It seems as if he’s designed this offense specifically for QB Tua Tagovailoa, and that’s a real problem considering he’s only played one full season, and once again I stress, did it wearing bubble wrap and oh so cautiously and carefully. That’s unacceptable, it just is.

There are more poor choices both Grier and McDaniel made. We let OLB AndrewVan Ginkel go. Never really a full time starter, but always, and I mean always an impact player. When you contrast him with our first RD pick OLB Chop Robinson, Robinson is all speed, quick get off, and basically made it through college looking quick, but not making plays. All AVG did was make plays. Big plays! We can only hope that someday Chop Robinson does what AVG did here. I understand why AVG left, he went to a coach that believed in him. Much like McDaniel believes in Tua, Flores believed in AVG. Back to Mike McDaniel for a moment. “Offensive Genius”. Next fucking time we consider hiring one of those, GO THE OTHER WAY! If he’s truly an offensive genius, he’d realize that no QB on the roster or off it can run this offense as well as Tua Tagovailoa, who this system was tailored to by a fine Italian tailor. It fits perfectly, but if you need to bring in a different QB, it takes far too much time to get everyone in sync. How he hasn’t been able to make changes and eliminate the most complex things like 3 different players in motion and then getting set with a QB who just got here 2 weeks is beyond me.

Oh yeah, we play the Patriots this weekend, and our good friend Hulk got tickets from his brother and was willing to drive to the game from his house in CT. At this point, Piggy (Who could fly to the game) and myself both backed out because the effort necessary to get that done and the expense just isn’t worth it to see this product. I admit, I thought we could be a very competitive team, i thought Mike McDaniel would work out the kinks, and we’d use new weapons like TE Jonnu Smith, and rookie RB Jaylen Wright, along with our superstars WR Tyreek Hill, WR Jaylen Waddle, 3rd WR OBJ, and promising 2nd year RB De’Von Achane. Instead, Jonnu Smith is an afterthought, OBJ may play his first game this weekend, and somehow 5’9 180 lb De’Von Achane became a workhorse RB, as starter Raheem Mostert is OUT with a chest injury. I know you know, but this offense that scored 496 points last season HAS NEVER HAD A LEAD THIS SEASON, NEVER! That includes Game 1 against Jacksonville at home, and Game 2 against Buffalo, at home, with Tua. Incomprehensible. Has the NFL really just figured out our offense now to the point where it can never again be effective? Just play 2 deep safeties and cover those WR’s and keep everything in front of you and they’re stymied!

The last 4 games of 2023 we scored 15.5 PPG, 22 against Dallas, 19 against the Ravens, 14 against the Buffalo Bills, and 7 against the Chiefs in frozen Arrowhead. This year it’s 11.3 PPG, 20 against Jacksonville, 10 against the Bills, 3 against the Seahawks and then 12 against the Titans, on MNF no less. The question now looks like what does Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier have to do to keep their jobs at the end of the season? We gave extensions to WR Tyreek Hill, WR Jaylen Waddle, QB Tua Tagovailoa, CB Jalen Ramsey, RB Raheem Mostert, and yet the one guy who gave us the chance to win our only game this season, S Jevon Holland, is without a contract. Seems like one of the guys who makes big plays, and yet there he is, on the outside looking in. Next year we have 7 picks, RD1, RD 2, RD 4, RD 5, and 2 picks in RD7. We’re expected to potentially get 2 compensatory picks, one very likely a 3rd RD pick for Christian Wilkins, and either a 3rd or 4th for Robert Hunt. We may also get a 7th RD pick for DeSon Elliott, who is having a nice season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I DO NOT, want GM Chris Grier making these picks, and I’m somewhat convinced I don’t want MM involved either. We’re going to have to once again draft a starting QB, because Tua’s days are numbered here, his next concussion could be his last, much like I had warned about talented TE Jordan Cameron before we picked him up. Oh yeah, WTF happened with Jonnu Smith, that guy who was going to help this offense when teams took away Hill and Waddle? Well, if you haven’t noticed, they took away Hill and Waddle!!! Tyreek Hill through 4 games has 17 receptions for 217 yards, 1 TD. Jaylen Waddle has 17 receptions for 212 yards 0 TD’s, remarkably similar to Hill. That’s basically 4 catches a game for about 54 yards per game. Let’s throw more money at them!!!

So we play the Patriots this weekend and I’m not sure how many minutes I’m willing to invest in watching this product we’ve putting out there. There will be no scouting report or predictions, I’m not putting any more effort into this than the team is right now, so we’ll just wait and see if we can improve from the garbage we’ve put forward through the last 4 games. I thought last week we were due for a better game but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The bye comes at a perfect time. It’s going to take some extra work to get Crossman more involved in other phases of the game.

Why is it a perfect time?

MM will give the players 3 days off, then bring em in Thursday for some more R&R

New Age, I am so very much with ya on this. AVG has always been a PLAYER and there’s no reason why we couldn’t afford to bring him back.

2 years, $20M ($10M/year) to the Vikings, which IMO, is low-balling AVG and his caliber of play.

Yet we chose to hyper-extend ‘Reek and Ramsey, just to make them the top-paid players at their position to keep them happy? SMH

There no reason why AVG shouldn’t be a Dolphin today and for the next several years.

Rewatched the last 5 minutes and man was it ugly. Pats were at the door twice and our secondary looked pretty average especially with the WR talent the Pats have. Demario and Ja Boutte almost pulled it off as Ramsey kept some pretty large cushions against these WR giants.

    MF,

Yep, it’s maddening. Dude has looked solid since being drafted with improvement every year. Those kinds of guys are the backbone of your defense especially with how often our DEs get injured.

And so, regardless of the outcome of this evening’s game and tomorrow evening’s game, our Phins have the lowest points scored in the league with 60 points over 5 games. Patsies* are second worst with 62.

I’m old enough to remember when we put up 70 points last season in a single game against the Broncos last season.

It took us 20 years to find the next great QB since Marino (say his name: TUA!), and now, Tua is 1 or 2 concussions (maybe even THIS season) away from us potentially taking another 20 years to find the next great QB.

Now at 2-3, we are trending towards mediocrity once again. Watch us go 9-8 for the season, miss the playoffs, lose Tua late in the season to another concussion, and select at about R1P20 in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I actually wanted us to lose this game.

McDaniel Finally Kept Running The Football In Big Win

    Posted by Ryan VanHoover | Oct 6, 2024 |

One of my biggest criticisms of Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has been his failure to stick with the running game when it is working. Today, McDaniel kept running the football in big spots, especially in the fourth quarter on the game-winning drive. There have been many times over his 3-year tenure when I have seen McDaniel get away from the run and don’t understand it. With quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins turned to Tyler Huntley and he’s only been here for a few weeks so it’s not fair to expect him to run the offense like Tua.

The fact is that this Dolphins team doesn’t have a quarterback like Tua on the roster to run the offense the way McDaniel wants them to run, so McDaniel is going to have to simplify and scale back the offense. I honestly didn’t think he would do that today against the New England Patriots because, in Monday Night’s humiliating loss to the Tennessee Titans, McDaniel didn’t really stick to the run and had Huntley throw the ball when he didn’t have any chemistry with his receivers.

The week before, when the Dolphins had success running the ball against the Seattle Seahawks, McDaniel got away from the run and had Skylar Thompson throw it. He would hold the ball too long and take too many sacks.

When the Dolphins were trailing 10-9 in the 4th quarter and were running it successfully to the red zone, I must admit I thought McDaniel would get away from the run and pass it, but he kept giving it to either Raheem Mostert or Jaylen Wright, who both got sizable gains, which set the offense up for the go-ahead score and gave it to Alec Ingold to put the team ahead for good.

Mostert brought a spark to running today after coming back from injury. With De’Von Achane out with a concussion during the game, Wright stepped up with some big runs. He probably could have had over 100 yards if it wasn’t for a couple of holding penalties, but he showed the type of plays he made in the preseason.

The Dolphins have a good stable of running backs and today proved if you keep feed them the ball, they can give you sizeable gains and can take it the distance at any time. I know this was the Patriots, and they are rebuilding, but it was a road game in the division, and they are hard to win. The Dolphins needed to win this game to give some hope they could potentially turn their season around.

McDaniel has to keep this formula and not get too cute with the offense. I know he likes to be aggressive, but like I said he doesn’t have a quarterback to run this offense like Tua and he’s going to have to be more conservative and scale things back for Huntley. I know it must have driven him crazy in the 3rd quarter to not go for it on 4th and one at the New England 30, but the way the game was going, it was the right call.

Today was a good win and possibly a season-saving win, and that can’t be understated. The Dolphins are going to have to win games with defense and running the ball. Also, I have to hope the special teams can stop their blunders, and Huntley can make a few plays in the passing game. The bottom line is that McDaniel has to realize that is how they are going to win until Tua comes back. It is going to test him as a head coach and how to call the game on offense, but if he can’t adjust, then you have to wonder if he should be our coach.

The bye is a perfect time to replace Crossman. I expect the announcement of his firing first thing this morning.

MM needs to hold that unit, its “coordinator” accountable for the garbage job he has done for the last 3 years!

    jfc!

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It’s too bad I’m not a fan anymore, because these are great.

Bills If Josh Allen struggles, it’s almost impossible for the Bills to win and Allen had one of the worst games of his career. The Bills QB completed just nine passes on 30 attempts (30%), which was the fewest completions by a QB with at least 30 passing attempts since 1992. The Bills defense came up with multiple big plays, including an interception and a strip-sack of C.J. Stroud that both came in the fourth quarter, but the offense couldn’t capitalize. Also, Sean McDermott made a questionable decision to call for three passes from his own end zone with 32 seconds left when he simply could have played for overtime. If Allen plays better, the Bills probably win, so no one in Buffalo should be panicking, but this was a brutal loss for the Bills.

Jets At the start of the 2024 season, Aaron Rodgers was the oldest player in the NFL and he’s playing like the oldest player in the NFL, which isn’t a good thing for New York. The Jets offense continues to look totally out of sync and a big reason for that is because Rodgers is struggling with his accuracy. Rodgers completed just 53.7% of his passes while also tying a career-high with three interceptions, including a pick six in the first half. The Jets defense forced two turnovers while holding Minnesota to one offensive touchdown, but that wasn’t enough because Rodgers and the offense are playing so poorly. Garrett Wilson caught 13 passes, but it took 22 targets to get him there. This was the kind of offensive performance that might be enough to convince the Jets that they need to make a trade for Davante Adams.

New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was arrested Saturday on assault and drug possession charges following an incident in Braintree, Massachusetts, local police announced Monday.

Police say there was an altercation between two people at a home that led to Peppers’ arrest. The 29-year-old, who is expected to be arraigned Monday in Quincy District Court, is expected to be charged with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of a Class B drug that authorities believe was cocaine, per CBS Boston.

Chop played 67% of D snaps and was in on 3 tackles but had only 1 solo tackle.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The D was good enough, you can’t measure his production by stats

He’s so quick off the ball, that it makes the QB take his eye off of downfield for a split second at times, and affects the pocket, so QB moves away

He’s no where close to a finished product, the sacks will come some day

I’m not sure Wright is a good scheme fit for us, because we’ve seen nothing but good stuff from him and he has remained healthy. Maybe Minny wants him 🤷‍♂️

  77. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Before he missed Week 4 against Tennessee, inside linebackers Long (and fellow starter Jordyn Brooks) had been playing every snap when games were competitive. On Sunday, Brooks played all 60 defensive snaps, but Long and Anthony Walker Jr. split the other inside linebacker snaps — 30 apiece.

With Phillips out, inside linebacker Duke Riley played outside linebacker on the first snap of the game but never played another defensive snap all day. Surprisingly, Quinton Bell also played just one defensive snap.

At outside linebacker, the Dolphins went primarily with Emmanuel Ogbah (who played 45 of 60 defensive snaps), rookie Chop Robinson (40 snaps) and newcomer Tyus Bowser (43), who played ahead of both Bell and rookie Mo Kamara, who was inactive. Bowser was plucked off Seattle’s practice squad on Thursday.

The good news about the linebacker play: Among 21 players who appeared on defense for Miami on Sunday, Pro Football Focus rated Robinson second best (behind only cornerback Kader Kohou) and Ogbah 11th. Not only was Robinson rated Miami’s second-best run defender, but he had three pressures (though still no sacks this season). Ogbah had a sack and tackle for loss.

The bad news: Among all of Miami’s defensive players on Sunday, PFF rated Long and Walker 19th and 20th, ahead of only Bell, who played just that one snap. Also, Brooks allowed all three passes in his coverage area to be caught, for 37 yards.

New England ran for 7.9 yards per carry (19 for 151), and PFF primarily blamed defensive linemen Benito Jones and Calais Campbell and Walker, Brooks and Long. They were rated the Dolphins’ five worst run defenders on Sunday, with Long ranked last.

  78. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

WTF do we sign a guy on THURSDAY and he beats out / gets more snaps on SUNDAY than Bell who looked great in preseason and our rookie draft pick Kamara.

  79. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Did OBJ play Sunday? Zero for Zero. Did he play?

I saw two FGs blocked and returned for TDs, and another game lost on a bad hold. Looks like we’re no the only ones dealing with a Danny Crossman issue.

In a way, all of us have a Danny Crossman to face someday. For some, shyness might be their Danny Crossman. For others, a lack of education might be their Danny Crossman.

For us, Danny Crossman is a big, dangerous Special Teams Coordinator who wants to kill our team. But as sure as my name is CavalierKong, the fans of the Miami Dolphins can conquer their own personal Danny Crossman, who also happens to be the actual Danny Crossman!

Tua Tagovailoa is spending the bye week meeting with brain experts.

If those meetings go as planned, our sense is he will return practice ahead of the Dolphins’ Week 8 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

I want Tua to retire. I don’t need to see this guy carted off the field on his way to the morgue. Prioritize your wife and kids man.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I feel ya, SB7. Don’t want to see ANYBODY lose their liveliness due to foolish and youthful, stubborn decisions. It’s only a matter of time before Tua gets another concussion and is forced to retire.

As such, we need to be prepared to draft another QB in the ’25 NFL Draft. And that’s why I stated that I wished we’d lost yesterday’s game.

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So you want Tua to do what you want him to do? How would you feel if someone wanted you to do something different?

  86. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Everyone wants to focus on Tua. There are many players to get concussed and it goes undetected and they keep playing.

Josh Allen clearly got concussed yesterday but the spotters and refs did nothing. He got some smelling salts and went back in the same game.

  87. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I was mistaken. Allen did go to the medical tent but the Bills said it was to check his ankle. At no time when he was down on the field did they look at his ankle. Allen didn’t even roll over on his own. The staff had to roll him over on to his back.

Then a trainer gives him smelling salt when he comes out of the tent right after they check his “ankle”.

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – actually I wanted the team to do what’s best for the team, they didn’t. Now after Tua’s concussion, I want him to do what’s best for him and the team. The team is under a fucking microscope because of him. It’s different with Tua because of what happened 2 seasons ago. Is it fair? It doesn’t matter, it is what it is. Every time he gets concussed, we have to overreact and keep him out for a month or more. That sucks for the team. Draft a QB and never look back. He’s not worth it

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

My problem with Tua is that he doesn’t listen. Every time someone pushes him, he pushes back even if it’s for the right reasons. Dude wants to be like every other QB and he won’t ever be treated like that. He really never was. He has risky behaviors which would get him fired from a ton of jobs. Charging that DB headfirst was my last straw with him. Beyond stupid.

We’re stuck with him another 4 years and there’s no real going forward until he’s gone. I hope McD doesn’t last the whole 4 and Grier should be out before next draft. Tua has skills but I doubt he survives another full season at any point in the next 4 years. And we don’t win without Tua so the hope is for average seasons now.

By this time tomorrow night we may be getting ready for the 185-MPH winds of a killer Hurricane!! My wife and I have ridden out dozens of hurricanes over the last few decades, but NONE of them were as powerful as this one!!

WORST OF ALL, our idiot governor has NOT called out the National Guard to help with the cleanup of Hurricane Helene, which hit about 9-10 days ago. The MESS is still lying on the beaches of Tampa Bay, ready to become PROJECTILES in tomorrow night’s projected catastrophe!!

Some forecasters are predicting THIS hurricane will lose some punch just before landfall (down to 135-150 MPH Top Winds). That’s STILL strong enough to inflict massive amounts of flooding and damage. God help us!!!

The interstate highways are clogged as far as the eye can see. Some have left Tampa earlier today only to get caught up in the mother of all traffic jams!! My wife and I (we are just renters) are stuck with landlords who do NOT want to pay a thing to protect their own property- – – so we can only hope this well built house will withstand whatever mother nature has in store for us tomorrow night.

On Thursday, we have set a meeting to close on a newer house in Brooksville, about 35 miles or so north of here. But first we have to survive TOMORROW NIGHT — which may be a truly difficult task. But, if we do escape harm’s way, we’ll both look back on this week as the scariest week of our entire lives!!

Assuming we survive THIS hurricane, it still may be several days before we can make a cell phone call, much less leave a message on this internet site. Rest assured we will do all that we can to give you an update when the authorities get off their butts and tell us it is possible to do so. Alas, one local radio station predicted this would be the most deadly and costliest hurricane ever to hit Florida. We’re hoping that radio station is WRONG!!

As of 10:30 PM, Hurricane Milton’s top winds remain at 180 MPH. His Pressure is at 897 millibars, very near an all-time record low for any hurricane in the western hemisphere’s history.

Next advisory set for 11:00 PM.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

11:00 Advisory was released a few minutes early. Milton’s top winds have dropped from 180 to 165 MPH. And his barometric pressure has risen from 897 to 914 millibars. Tampa remains in the center of the “Cone of Probability” regarding exactly WHERE the storm will strike in Florida.

Gonna be hard to sleep tonight!!

Thank you Elephant Rider & UKFinFan. Power company expects over one million power outages just in Tampa Bay area. MANY more outages predicted for a broad swath of customers across Florida from Sarasota to Orlando to the east coast and to other parts of the state. It will take WEEKS to get power restored in many cases.

During the huge outages, millions are expected to run out of much needed prescription medications. Then there will be massive food shortages. And the outbreak of looting and lawlessness is a given since law enforcement will be difficult to impossible to obtain.

Sorry to bring you folks this description of utter disaster. Those of you who are younger and physically able to help your neighbors should do just that – – – getting through this and getting back on our feet will be the hardest thing many of us have ever done.
