2024 Season – Game 6 – Dolphins @ Colts

The Miami Dolphins go to Indianapolis after the BYE week with an opportunity to get back to .500 and even their record to 3-3. QB Tyler “Snoop” Huntley is in line to start, but backup QB Skylar Thompson, recovering from a bruised ribs, should be able to be the backup QB. Injuries aside, this game goes way beyond just our players injuries. Somehow, we plodded past the inept New England Patriots and won that game 15-10. We have won 2 games so far, and in neither victory did this team resemble in any way the high flying offense from last season where the team scored 496 points and scored an average of 29.2 PPG. So far this season the Dolphins are averaging a paltry 12 PPG, the leagues worst. For reference, the Carolina Panthers have their backup QB in, and the Panthers are just awful by the way, yet somehow the Carolina Panthers with Andy Dalton have scored 22.5 PPG in his 4 games that he’s played. Take away our season opener where we erupted for 20 points, we’re scoring 10 points per game. This with WR’s Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, RB’s De’Von Achane, Raheem Mostert and Jaylen Wright all sharing time. No bueno, and people, people meaning our coaching staff, and the players, need to be held accountable.

It looks like the Colts will be going with QB Anthony Richardson on Sunday. He’s been out for 3 games, and in his stead, QB Joe Flacco was killing it! Flacco in 3 games has completed 71 of 108 pass attempts with 7 TD’s and 1 INT. The Colts want their 1st RD pick back on the field, so despite the success Flacco has had, they’re back to Richardson. Richardson has struggled this season and despite the fact that he’s 2-2 this season, he has completed 50% of his passes with 3 TD’s and 6 INT’s. That’s more in line with our QB’s, so maybe the playing field is level for a change. The big difference is QB Anthony Richardson has a very high ceiling, and is a very athletic QB, while you can’t say that about either of our QB’s Tyler Huntley or Skylar Thompson.

One thing that’s just about impossible to me is the fact that last season, our TE room didn’t catch one TD. Well, guess what? We brought in TE Jonnu Smith who was supposed to be a big part of the offense, especially if WR’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle were getting shut down. Guess what again, they’ve been shut down ALL SEASON! Still, no Dolphins TE has caught a TD last season or this season through 5 games. Could this be the week? Don’t bet on it, but you never know. Good news for the offense is RB’s Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane are both going to play, along with promising rookie Jaylen Wright.

The defense is right smack in the middle statistically this season, but when the offense can’t sustain drives and turns the ball over, that puts more pressure on the D, and of course they’re out on the field much longer than they should. We’re giving up 22.6 PPG, which I feel is acceptable, considering once again how poor the offense has been. HC Mike McDaniel had the BYE week to come up with ways to get this offense going with QB Tyler Huntley, and then of course the likely return of QB Tua Tagovailoa from a concussion, at the Fest game against the Arizona Cardinals. This offense has to start showing some life, or the Head Coach, despite getting an extension, should be in danger of losing his job. The best player on this has been 39 year old DL Calais Campbell. Hands down, he’s had the biggest impact. He and his opposite DE Zach Sieler. Both players are getting it done, my fear that Sieler would suffer without DE Christian Wilkins was probably accurate, because Calais Campbell has been that good. Unfortunately, Campbell has made it clear this is his last season, so next year it’s going to need to be a priority of sorts, although QB, and O-line will be much higher priorities out of necessity.

If WR’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have pride, and I believe they do, these guys are going to have to start to make an impact. I understand they rely on the QB, but they have to be better. We can’t fall to 2-4, and then expect the fragile QB Tua Tagovailoa to take this team the playoffs. They need to get themselves in gear and start scoring TD’s. Get the TE involved, maybe even get them a TD. When Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane are healthy, they make a difference, they give this offense some electricity, but they need the star WR’s to be much more involved in the offense and scoring.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

    M13,

Wynn has to prove he can even stay healthy before I worry about him. I still think the OL has played better than fans think. I know…sounds familiar. They are still too inconsistent, but I see a lot of good things happening too. Brewer is better than I thought he’d be. He’s best when he’s uncovered and he can move. He’s not nearly as effective when he’s covered, but he’s been a little better than I thought he’d be. Our guard play has to be more consistent, but I really don’t think they’re the reason we’re losing games. I’m seeing a unit that is starting to move together like they should. Certain players could be playing individually better, but the unit looks well coached.

Everybody loves to blame the OL because all they really see is a sack or a penalty, but I don’t think they’re the reason we’re losing games. They still need to play better, but I see the foundation there to allow that improvement.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. It’s really been about QB play. They’ve had time to throw but they don’t process quickly and take unnecessary sacks. That’s what I’ve been seeing from all three backups.

My neighbor the Pats fan said, they loved Wynn, but always injured so Belicheat got rid of him

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I hate the IU QB Kurtis Rouke injured his thumb on his throwing hand. I guess his thumb nail got ripped off and he kept playing the rest of the first half. He had surgery and is now going to miss 1 to 4 games right when they are getting to the meat of their schedule with Washington, MSU, Michigan and Ohio State. I hope he is back by the Michigan game at the latest.

Y’all should be concerned also, that’s the QB we are taking in the draft. 😉

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @schadjoe

Dolphins CB Kader Kohou did not practice due to a neck injury and CB Storm Duck did not practice due to an ankle injury

Cam Smith is back and could be a factor now Jalen Ramsey, Kendall Fuller, Ethan Bonner, Cam Smith healthy

  4. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    I didn’t know we signed C.J. Beathard.

“Tagovailoa was one of four Dolphins quarterbacks to practice Wednesday. The others: Tim Boyle, Skylar Thompson and newcomer C.J. Beathard.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t know what his numbers were, but I do remember Beathard wasn’t too awful backing up in San Fran. With a little time he might be serviceable. Too bad we didn’t sign him instead of Boyle back at the beginning of the season.

    Randy,

The run game has looked good, so I’ll ask you the tough question. What is the biggest problem? Is it terrible QB play, which is true, or terrible playcalling and practice which I, at least, think is a bigger issue? Does this team look ready to play ever and why is Crossman still the ST coach?

    —————

I agree with your whole post in general, but when comparing our current O-Line to last season’s starting O-Line, I think we’ve taken a major step backwards. Let’s talk about the running game first. We were damn near UNSTOPPABLE before the injuries mounted up.

We absolutely concur that Robert Hunt (STUD!) made life that much easier for Austin Jackson… and probably also for Connor Williams to some degree. When a healthy Isaiah Wynn was in there, he was making very productive lanes for our RBs to shoot through. Our YPC (I’d have to look it up) when we had our starters in last season were something to the tune of +6.0 yards/carry (before Wynn went down).

This year? Not even close (4.1 YPC). To me, our O-Line starters of last season vs our starters of this season definately plays a role. To what extent? I suppose that depends on who ya ask.

Now we DO know one thing: with Tua being out, we haven’t had a deep ball to back opposing Defenses from stacking the box… that there is certainly a factor, so it’s difficult to gauge if it’s a personnel problem for us to date. I’m also throwing the first two games of this season out (when Tua played) due to the fact that everybody was green after such a short preseason. That, and Tua was off his game against the Bills.

Now THIS is the biggest factor to me, Brother… the PASS-PRO of our O-Line (both last season and this season). We’re following the late-career model of Tom Brady with the Patsies*. That is, we want mere ‘speed bumps’ there, being Brady (and now Tua) have the uncanny ability to get rid of the ball so very, very quickly and accurately. This saves a TON of $$$ on paying stout pass-protectors (except for on the Tackles who MUST defend EDGE rushers) and allows us to spend $$$ elsewhere (like on always extending our divas! 😉 ).

So when ya have a backup QB who doesn’t have the skillset of Tom Brady or Tua (RARE traits, indeed), our O-Line isn’t going to be able to protect them as well as, say the Ravens or Stealers* O-Lines can and do.

Perhaps that’s not so much an indictment on the personnel of our O-Line, but rather the GM who didn’t get a backup QB who can read and execute as fast as Brady or Tua.

Now onto Brewer. He’s pleasantly surprised me as well: he’s one helluva run-blocker and is very active. His weakness, though? He gave up more sacks last year than every Center but one. As currently constituted, this O-Line is not designed to say, give a Big Ben unlimited time to get a pass off. If Tua’s healthy, Brewer can work… if he gets his snapping down (shades of Connor Williams with this one).

I don’t like Eich, he pisses me off… I expected far more from him coming from Notre Dame’s outside zone-blocking scheme. He was a STUD and the perfect fit for our Offense, but it seems the NFL is too big for him. He should have blossomed by now. IMO, he’s a career backup.

Robert Jones, IMO, is a career backup. He’s not a difference maker, but he doesn’t suck.

T-STEAD? MY GUY! I wanted us to draft him out of Arkansas Pine-Bluff badly, and wasn’t wrong about him. By the time we eventually signed him, it was late in his career and he can’t stay healthy full-time. We spent a ton of $$$ on him to be a part-time player.

Austin Jackson? I drafted him! However, and like we concur, he’s not nearly a good without Robert Hunt.

Mixed bag for me, and I truly appreciate your opinions on the O-Line. Only time will tell if this current O-Line has enough to get us into playoff (PLAYOFFS?!!) contention.

The very first Dolphins game I went to was against the Cardinals

It was the day Wannstedt got fired whatever week it was 2004.

Incidently, the very first pro game I went to was the Giants vs you guessed it The Cardinals ( St Louis) it was mid seventies when the Giants were playing their home games at Yale while the Meadowlands were being built. Dierdorf and the late Conrad Dobler on the left side for Cards with Jim Hart. Doubler had a broken hand or something and had it all taped to where it was a huge club.
Pete Gogolac ( pulled his name out of my ass) was kicking extra points over the net and one guy got 2 footballs. I was in 5th or 6th grade that was fun.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

proposition bet, they can’t be parlayed, only single bets and the odds suck

For example: Fins -3 vs AZ, bet $11 to win $10 plus your bet back. A prop bet might be Sanders to kick 2.5 FGs, over -150 (bet $15 to win $10) and under +110 (bet $10 to win$11)

if one guy bets $15 and loses, and one guy bets $10 and wins, the house pays out $11, but collects $15, so $4 profit

The house is only interested in trying to get the same amount bet on each side and collecting this vig

    @OmarKelly

But have they gotten the Dolphins to the intended destination?

No playoff wins. Owner keeps giving Grier the credit card to fix the finances. This isn’t sustainable

  19. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    New Age,

Well, if I had all the answers, I’d be the GM! The OL has been too inconsistent, but they are starting to work together. I think the issues are probably more of an individual issue with subpar players. We’re basically playing backups at guard and a backup at LT whenever Armstead goes out. Also, they are using Brewer out in space a lot. He’s good at it, but it makes the job of the guards harder because their Center is 5 yards downfield and can’t help at all. We don’t have guards who can consistently win 1-on-1.

My answer would be to simplify the offense, run the ball more and maybe go a little bit heavier in protections. I’d use it to set up more play action to help take heat off our OL and whatever backup QB is in there. I don’t think the OL has been great or even close, but the games I’ve seen they certainly aren’t losing games for us every week. That said, they can and need to play better. Hell, you can’t find our skill guys with a fricking search light anymore. What are they doing to help us win games? Counting your millions doesn’t count!

Malik “did a good job” on returns in preseason, Crossman said… Crossman said long snapper Blake Ferguson “is still a member of the club” and team will support him during his absence due to a “personal issue.”

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

He’s a blocking guy. I wonder if he would commit less penalties than Hill.

No doubt McDaniel wants to run the ball. The passing game is always about timing and trust. I don’t really care about the stats the last 9 games or whatever. That has nothing to do with now. The offense has to get back on track and play up to their ability. The talent is there.
