2024 Season – Game 8 – Dolphins @ Bills

Let me start off by saying it was great to see everyone who attended the 2024 Fest! Despite the fact that the Dolphins lost after leading for most of the game didn’t ruin the day entirely because we had fantastic company! The Dolphins have now found another way to lose a game, one they were pretty much in control of through 3 and 1/2 quarters. Now, our Dolphins are 2-5, and face the daunting task of going to Buffalo to face the 1st place Buffalo Bills. The chasm between the 2 teams is wide, and the Bills record of 6-2 and our 2-5 record don’t adequately describe the difference between the teams.

The Buffalo Bills are #5 in offensive scoring averaging 28.8 PPG and are #6 allowing only 18.3 PPG. The Dolphins in contrast are #32 in offensive scoring at 13.9 PPG and mid pack at #16 on defense allowing 22.4 PPG. We could easily be 1-6 if not Jevon Holland’s game saving forced fumble near the end of game 1 against the Jaguars. Or, we could be 3-4 if Tua was somehow able to handle the high snap from C Aaron Brewer. I don’t know what to expect from our team against the Bills. No question the offense looked better in the hands of QB Tua Tagovailoa, but if you look at it in the context of we’re playing the Bills in Buffalo, it’s fugly man. Over the last 7 years, we have been outscored 290-174, and are 0-7 playing in Orchard Park Buffalo. You have to go back to 2016 to find the last time the Dolphins defeated the Bills in their house. QB Tua Tagovailoa has averaged a paltry 79.37 rating against the Bills in Buffalo over the last 4 years, and the one good game he had still resulted in a 32-29 defeat.

If, somehow, the Dolphins can beat the Bills this week, I suppose they could still have a small chance for a playoff berth, but they would have some tough sledding ahead, and more than likely need to win 7 of the next 9 afterwards, and that’s a tall task indeed for a team with the worst scoring offense, and a defense that couldn’t close out the Arizona Cardinals at home last week. What has been strange about our offense is WR Tyreek Hill has only cracked 100 yards once, the season opener. Jaylen Waddle’s season has been pretty similar, having only one 100 yard game, the last game against Arizona. TE Jonnu Smith who was supposed to be a big part of the offense has been hit or miss. Rookie RB Jaylen Wright, who to me looks like our best all around back just doesn’t get nearly enough touches. He’s averaging a team best 5.3 YPC but has only 36 carries on the season while De”von Achane has been getting too many touches with 81. RB Raheem Mostert also has had more carries than Wright with 45. I think it’s time to change that, Mostert might not even be here next season, and Achane is too fragile to handle a heavy workload.

The defense was a huge disappointment this past week. Yes, we lost OLB Jaelan Phillips for the season a few weeks ago, and OLB Bradley Chubb is still on IR. Our defense, with the Dolphins up 27-18 with 12:22 left in the 4th quarter allowed an 9 play 70 yard TD drive to close the score to MIA 27 – ARZ 25. Worse than the previous drive, the Dolphins allowed a 5:01 game winning drive to run the clock out, including 2 Miami Dolphins TIMEOUTS and the 2 Minute Warning. Pathetic!!!! Rookie LB Chop Robinson had one lousy tackle in the game. Chop has 10 total tackles playing nearly 50% of the snaps on defense. He has 2 tackles for a loss and ZERO sacks. Is it possible he turns things around? Who knows, but it’s another huge strike against letting Grier buy the groceries. Not sure I’d trust him to bring in the mail!

Whatever the result of this game is will decide the tenor of the next article. If we lose, I can guarantee my pitchfork will be sharpened and ready to stick it to the Dolphins front office, Head Coach Mike McDaniel, and many others. Grier with his myopic assessment of not only the talent of the roster he assembled, but the roster construction which is littered with one year contracts, except of the course the huge ones on offense like QB Tua Tagovailoa, WR Tyreek Hill, WR Jaylen Waddle, all to the tune of 13.9 PPG. If we don’t win this Sunday, it’s time to start looking elsewhere for a GM and a Head Coach too because no GM should have to be saddled with a lame duck Head Coach.

Week 9, this weekend, will be the first time the Lions will be playing outdoors this season. They are the 3rd team in NFL history to not play outside until November. The other two are the Saints and Falcons.

Good write Mike E .. it was really good seeing everyone who came …

I also have very low expectations this week , and unfortunately if they lose as expected , whether a good loss or a blow out , we can likely stick a fork in em .. not confident they can string together enough wins to get , and not confident that Tua can stay healthy for the duration required .. if he keeps tossing his OL under the bus , they can make life miserable for him

Dolphins have 1 scout at OSU/PSU game. Many NFL teams have multiple scouts at the game.

  16. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jaxson Dart having a huge day, 23 of 29 for 495 with 6 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Also 7 rush for 48 yards. All without his #1 WR Tre Harris.

Their #2 WR Jordan Watkins is having the game of his life. He had 17 rec for 295 with 2 TD’s coming into this game. Today he has 8 rec for 254 yards and 5 TD’s.

  17. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Stupid play by Cam Ward

  18. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Cam Ward looked pretty damn good today, but the Canes will probably be one and done in the college playoffs. I want to see just how good Pitt is because they look pretty good but haven’t played anybody. SMU and Clemson should show who they are.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

SMU is doing it without their best QB who was trying to come back from a knee injury and got reinjured. I think his name was Stone.

Pitt/SMU should be another good one tonight.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Mike – who do you think is the best QB in the ’25 draft?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Cam Ward impresses me in the way he just gets the job done. He’s been really good at coming from behind and closing games. He seems to be a real leader back there.

He will most likely end up drafted by the Panthers.

There are some buyer beware QB’s in the draft.

Not being a homer, but I believe Kurtis Rourke is very underrated. I hope it stays that way.

  20. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Great write as always Mike E, but I’m more positive on Jonnu Smith than you are. He’s a route-runner and playmaker. Smythe probably hates him lining up so much.

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Mike, I think the best QB fits for our offense are Cam Ward, Jaxson Dart, Kurtis Rourke, Dillon Gabriel, Quinn Ewers, Miller Moss and Garrett Nussmeier.

Current Lions executive a perfect candidate to be next Dolphins GM

The Miami Dolphins, specifically owner Stephen Ross, need to figure out what is happening with this team. Two consecutive years in the playoffs, and Miami hasn’t looked further from being a contender than they do right now.

Chris Grier is part of the larger problem and Mike McDaniel is as well. There is only one guy that can fix this mess and that is the Dolphins owner. Ross will do nothing more than continue to spin his wheels until he gets someone into his organization with fresh ideas and a tendency to succeed.

That man is John Dorsey, and he should be running the Dolphins organization. If Ross is as smart as he is made out to be, he will stop buying into what Grier is peddling and start listening to someone who actually knows about football.

Detroit Lions executive John Dorsey would be first step in right direction for Miami Dolphins

Currently, Dorsey is serving as a senior personnel executive with the Detroit Lions. It is hard to watch a team like the Lions find the success they have, considering they started their rebuild around the same time Miami attempted to.

  23. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The Lions are run well, and no one would have ever said that about that team. Consider that Dorsey joined the Lions in 2021, and since then, the organization started to run a lot smoother.

Dorsey was also part of constructing the current Kansas City Chiefs. From 2013 to 2017, Dorsey was the Chiefs’ general manager. Dorsey took control of a two-win franchise and hired Andy Reid to coach the team.

After two losing seasons prior to his arrival, Kansas City has not had a single losing season, and under Dorsey, they went to the playoffs in four of his five seasons.

Dorsey then joined the Cleveland Browns, where coaches and executives go to end their careers. It wasn’t a great time in Cleveland for him, but few managers find success. Dorsey joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020 as a consultant before heading to Detroit.

In Miami, Dorsey should be given the same overall responsibility that he was given in Kansas City. He should get to decide McDaniel’s future, as well as the future of all the current players on the team.

If Ross wants a chance to win before he hands the Dolphins to his daughter, he needs to make a change that he has been hesitant to make. Dorsey may not save the Dolphins franchise, but he’s NFL smart and he’s had success, which is something Grier knows little of.

  24. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Speaking of Kurtis Rourke…

How about them INDIANA HOOSIERS!!!!!! Still on top of the Big Ten at 9-0(6-0). They have outscored their opponents 419 to 123 and vs Big Ten teams 259 to99.

    Best start in school history!

Kurtis Rourke back starting after having surgery on his thumb on his throwing hand 2 weeks ago went 19-29 for 263 and 4 TD’s beating Michigan State on the road 47-10.

It’s time these pollsters give IU some top 10 love!

  26. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    BBM,

yes, PSU is devoid of any five star WR’s, and probably four star. I’m tired of Franklin. He can’t beat OSU. It’s fine to beat up on the lesser opponents, but if you can’t beat OSU then it’s a problem. Not as much as in past years because of the new playoff format though.

the similarities between the Dolphins and PSU are stunning to me over the last decade, and especially lately. Franklin can’t beat a top five team, and their OL has been good for about two years in the past decade.

  27. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Brian,

I concur with you 100% on our PSU Nittany Lions and our Miami Dolphins… it seems to be our lot in life to suffer, my guy! SMH

Had work today, and everybody I work around is a PSU fan. The overwhelming consensus? Franklin must go! You aren’t alone!

Then there are the rape allegations regarding a couple/few of his former players, and Franklin’s media response pretty much put a target on his back. Personally, I think Franklin is going to be gone soon.

I hate being a PSU fan AND Miami Dolphins fan in 2024! FML! LOL

You are way ahead of me as per usual. But as of right now, my faves are Cam Ward and Dillon Gabriel.

  30. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know we have more needs than RB, but we have 4 picks in the first 3 rounds. Mostert seems to be losing “it”. We need another RB to pair with Wright and keep Achane fresh.

I would love to get RB Cam Skattebo in the top of the 5th. I posted him before but he’s 5’11, 215 pounds and runs like a tank, good receiver with ridiculous contact balance. He is so fun to watch and is lighting up Oklahoma State tonight.

    Tonight 23 carries for 153 yards and 1 TD, 4 rec for 121 and 2 TD’s.

  31. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just sayin’… IF we were to draft Drew Allar in the ’25 Draft, and I don’t care what round, I’m going to lose my shit… NOT in a good way, either. WAY too overrated.

I’m seeing current mock drafts where he’s going top-10… ARE YOU SERIOUS? At least Tua was able to bring it in critical situations in college. Allar? Not so much. He shrinks when the heat is on. Allar might (barely) look good against POS teams, but he can’t win when it counts against REAL competition.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – I’m all about Jonnu, we just don’t use him enough. That’s what bugs me

  33. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Mason Rudolph would have been a fantastic backup QB for us behind Tua… WAY better than Skylar, Huntley, Mike White, CJ Beathard, or ‘The Fuck’ Tim Boyle.

    It’s true.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

NOT sayin’ Rudolph would have saved the day like Mighty Mouse, but he’s still got a LOT of potential. He’s going to have a Rich Gannon-type of career: everybody counts him out, then he comes on like Gangbusters later on in his career.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And maybe Miami (Coach McD’s system) isn’t the best system for Rudolph’s future success, but he’s far better than what we’ve brought in here to back up Tua.

PSU coach, Franklin, always makes me scratch my head with his clock/time/game management…lol

  38. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Allar has all the tools, I just don’t think he has the mental makeup to put it all together. Additionally, Franklin and his staff haven’t been good with developing QB’s. Christian Hackenberg looked really good under Bill O’Brien, and when he left Hackenberg’s development was really stunted when Franklin took over.

  39. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    ****************************************

I think that’s a little harsh M. Ross is by far not the worst owner in the NFL. He’s willing to spend anything to win, and I’m sure if Dorsey felt that Ross in any way was an issue, he would interview anyway, and let him know his concerns. We have a great facility here, it’s beautiful weather, no state income tax. I don’t expect to have any problem finding someone to be our GM if we frigging actually pull the trigger and give Grier the axe. Ross has definitely blundered a few times, but Whoever the GM is just has to make it clear he can’t meddle with the football operations if he wants his team to be in the SB

  42. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Mike – Thanks for the QB analysis. I hope we do the right thing and look for Tua’s replacement. As far as trading Campbell, we have to see what happens today in BUF. If we somehow pull out the win, we’re not trading anyone. If we lose as expected, then absolutely!
