2024 Season – Game 9 – Dolphins @ Rams MNF

The Miami Dolphins haven’t given us a whole lot to celebrate, but today’s article is a milestone, and something we should all be proud of. This article will be #1000, and that’s a pretty significant mark. That takes years my friends, and we have all been together for quite a number of years. So let me thank of all you who still come here to share our misery, or happiness together. My hope is we have a lot more happiness than misery for the rest of this season, but the Dolphins draw a difficult matchup in the Los Angeles Rams, in their house on the primest of prime time games, Monday Night Football. The Rams are on a 3 game win streak, while our Dolphins are going the opposite way, 3 straight losses. The good news is, despite the 3 losses, in the last 2 games, our offense has played their best football of the season, and you have to think if they can continue playing as well on offense, the wins will happen.

QB Tua Tagovailoa played nearly flawlessly last week against our division rival Buffalo Bills. Tua completed 25 of 28 pass attempts for 231 yards and 2 TD’s and zero INT’s. This marks the very first time that QB Tua Tagovailoa played well against the Bills. He played well enough to win, that’s for sure. You can blame Mike McDaniel for leaving too much time on the clock, 1 minute and 38 seconds to be exact. Obviously scoring was paramount, but knowing how well Bills QB Josh Allen plays with the game on the line, it would have been better to leave him little or no time to generate a comeback drive. Our defense hasn’t been great this season, but we were also missing key players all over the defense, namely DT Zach Sieler, S Jevon Holland, CB Kader Kohou and CB Storm Duck. We did force a 61 yard FG attempt by beleaguered PK Tyler Bass, who earlier in the game missed an extra point attempt, but of course, we’re the 21st century Miami Dolphins, and of course the 61 yarder was GOOD!

Let’s face it, we’re 2-6, but there’s still the slimmest chance to remain relevant and make a playoff push. It MUST start here, this Monday night in Los Angeles. We’re 31st in offensive scoring but the last 2 games with Tua at the helm, we’ve scored 27 PPG, and lost both. We miss Zach Sieler, and we miss Jevon Holland as well. I don’t think we get Holland back, but Sieler is probably going to make his return. How about DE/OLB Emmanuel Ogbah playing with a torn biceps muscle? You have to give this guy some serious respect. The defense has also made a significant change, and so far the change seems to be the right one. The Dolphins have replaced ILB David Long with backup ILB Anthony Walker. Long was being targeted far too much in the passing game, and so far, Walker has been up to the task and has been better than Long. Recent OLB pickup Tyus Bowser has also seen a lot of playing time with Emmanuel Ogbah doing more work on the DL with Sieler OUT. Despite our recent defensive woes, our defense has been better than the Rams defense. Dolphins have allowed 23.4 PPG good for 17th while the Rams have allowed 24.3 PPG which is 22nd. Getting Sieler and Kohou back will help, although Cam Smith looked like he at least belonged on the field, and his coverage on that ill fated illegal hit to the helmet by S Jordan Poyer was tight, he had the receiver played perfectly until Poyer came in with the helmet to helmet hit which was such a huge penalty.

Right now it’s one game at a time. Go to LA, get the “W”, and you’re 3-6, but come home to face the Las Vegas Raiders next Sunday, and then the following week, the New England Patriots, once again, at home. This truly is a must win situation for our Dolphins. I’m not going to look for statistics, but I wouldn’t expect to find an NFL team that made the playoffs that started out the season 2-7. The situation is desire, and there really is no room for error. We had the Cardinals game, leading by 9 points in the 4th quarter, and let that one slip away, the missed snap of course loomed very large in that game. Last week we score the go ahead TD against the Bills only to lose on a long 61 yard FG. We just can’t afford to make costly mistakes, our margin of error is GONE! The Rams WR corps in now healthy, which means our defense will have its hands full. Both star WR’s, Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua are healthy, although Puka Nacua is playing through a knee injury. Their RB Kyren Williams has been having an excellent season, rushing for over 600 yards with 8 rushing TD’s, and 116 yards receiving with 2 TD’s.

I think the run game has really been the key to our offensive success the last 2 games. Our O-line has been opening up huge holes and our backs have been making the most of that. Of course, having a competent QB run the offense makes all the world of difference, and Tua has played extremely well. His patience has been exceptional, he hasn’t gotten frustrated and tried to take what wasn’t there, he’s not forcing the ball to Hill or Waddle. The RB’s have become a much bigger part of the passing game, with Achane leading the Dolphins in receptions with 37 for 302 yards. TE Jonnu Smith has also been used in the pass game as an outlet. I commend QB Tua Tagovailoa for his resolve, I’m sure his two star WR’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle must be in his ear constantly begging for the ball, but he has resisted throwing into heavy coverage. There are 2 rookie defensive players on the Rams that have played excellent football, 1st RD pick (19th overall) OLB Jared Verse who has 3.5 sacks, and his Florida State teammate, DT Braden Fiske, who was the 2nd RD pick (39th overall) for the Rams, has 3 sacks. These guys were thrilled to be drafted by the same team, and are a dangerous pair. The Rams have 21 sacks overall, while our Dolphins have only 10. DE’s Calais Campbell and Emmanuel Ogbah lead the Dolphins in sacks with 2 a piece.

We’ve been saying it for a couple of weeks now, we have to win, but this time it’s not just a warning. A loss this Monday Night and there is a very good chance some heads are going to roll. Our playoff chances will be over with, and I don’t know how patient Dolphins Owner Steve Ross is going to be. He opened his checkbook and paid for whatever Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel asked him to pay for, and 2-8 doesn’t cut it. Even if somehow we were to win enough games to be either 7-10 or 8-9, winning with the pressure off because the playoffs are unattainable should be unacceptable to this owner. Like it or not, there was Super Bowl talk around this team, because of the success we had last season, the fact that Tua stayed healthy the entire season. Steve Ross OK’s paying Tua, and WR’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and then CB Jalen Ramsey and even RB Raheem Mostert. We then signed a boatload of players to 1 year contracts to fill up the roster. This is supposed to be a Super Bowl run, and instead we’ve had an injured QB, and then a roster and a Head Coach that seemed totally unprepared to play without the starting QB. A completely non competitive team all around, and if we are to lose on Monday Night Football, both GM Chris Grier and HC Mike MCdaniel might want to take some pictures when we get back to FLA next week, because they could potentially be some of their last days there.

Seiler returning was huge!! Dude is one of the best DT’s in the league. Same with Holland.

What happened to Chop? Played well in first half then don’t remember seeing him again.

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

With the win we drop to #10 in the draft. I really like this one by Tankathon:

#10 OT Kelvin Banks, Texas who can play inside or outside

#43 DT Derrick Harmon, Oregon. complete stud

    #98 QB Drew Allar, PSU

    #99 OG Jaeden Roberts, Alabama

  3. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

so apparently Tua didn’t learn from the Buffalo game. He attempts to tackle Rozeboom HEADFIRST. It’s only a matter of time before he sustains another concussion.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

overblown, his head is part of his body, he’s gotta put it somewhere, not likely to get concussed around the ball carriers ankles

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I watched the play again, he kinda threw his body sideways, didn’t really lead with his head, his head was more out of bounds, while the contact was with his shoulders. It was close though, and for a QB who is always just one hit away from probably missing the rest of the season, he needs to be more careful.

  4. pieguyevan's avatar pieguyevan says:

Jordyn Brooks was all over the field tonight. It was really cool seeing some good LB play. Doesn’t feel like we’ve had some really good LB play in a LOOONG time

Big win on the road. Had to have it. 🙂

  6. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

I’m so happy we won:) let’s just take it one game at a time and see where we end up. I felt like we played well the last two games. We had too many injuries o the defense and couldn’t stop them.

  7. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Have you seen Tua’s presser/comments he made on his head first tackle of the dude intercepting his first ball?

    Nice…lol

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Donkies, Colts and Bengals also have fairly easy schedules the rest of the way, don’t think 9-7 gets us in

We’d likely have to win 7 of 8 and 2 of GB, SF and Hou

At least we have a chance, but I’m not expecting to still be in the race with 3 games left

Not sure we can stop shooting ourselves in the foot and play semi clean/disciplined ball the rest of the way

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The Colts suck, the Broncos have to play the Falcons, Bengals, Chargers, Raiders and Chiefs, (Raiders, Chargers, Bengals AWAY), the Chiefs are home though. I’m not especially worried about any other team but us. We have an almost impossible task ahead of us, but if we can get healthy at the right time this year and play well, who knows? Maybe this is the year when we finish strong rather than fold.

  9. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I watched more football last night than I have all season. That being said, I still turned it off at midway through the 3rd qtr. Nice to see we won. Nicer to go to bed and not worry about it at all.

Through 9 games ILB Jordan Brooks has played 100% of all defensive snaps. The only player on defense to do that.

If we are out of the playoff race with 3 weeks to go, my suggestion would be to poach a couple players off other teams practice squads. I think they have to be on your 53 for 3 weeks in order to poach them. You can’t just do it at the end of the season. I would poach some of these guys and cut some of the 1 year guys we won’t be bringing back.

    *QB Michael Pratt, Bucs

    *QB Austin Reed, Bears

    QB Tanner Mordecai, 49er’s

    *DT Corey Durden, Rams

    *OT/OG Garrett Greenfield, Giants

    OG Javion Cohen, Browns

    OG Cole Spencer, Titans

    ILB Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste, Chargers

    *CB Kamal Hadden, Packers

(*) are players we definitely should go after.

  35. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I finally got a look at Jay Higgins, LB, Iowa. YES… he’s the real deal. Saw his tape vs then #3 Ohio State and he was lined up all over the place, he’s great in coverage, and he’s got a nose for the ball carrier.

I’ll continue to keep my eyes on him as the season continues.

  36. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

A great many of us were really uncertain about the Aaron Brewer signing, being he gave up more sacks last season than all but 1 other Center. Guess what? He hasn’t given up a sack or QB hit all season long!

He is currently PFF’s #5 overall Center in the NFL. Connor Williams is currently #23. Looks as though Chris Grier made a STELLAR choice in signing Brewer.

  37. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

PFF’s individual O-Line rankings to date

    T-Stead: #1 OT

    Kendall Lamm: #26 OT

    Austin Jackson: #72 OT

    Robert Jones: #45 G

    Liam Eichenberg: #81 G

    Aaron Brewer: #5 C

Looks to me that Austin Jackson would have performed closer to his career standards if we get a solid RG (think Robert Hunt season). In a nutshell, we must upgrade from Robert Jones and Liam Eichenberg next season.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We’ll see how well Isaiah Wynn performs once he’s back, and he’s presumably going to take over at LG. If he performs as well as he had last season, perhaps we bring him back in ’25. I think the RG position is one we really need to focus on in either FA or the Draft.

  38. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think we must take the Safety position into careful consideration next season. We have the potential to lose both of our starting Safeties: Poyer is past his expiration date and we’ll see if we re-sign Holland or let him walk.

  39. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tua isn’t going to last much longer… especially with the way he put himself in harm’s way in trying to tackle the defender who intercepted him on Monday night. So to me, we’ve got to draft a QB (preferably before day 2 of the Draft is over).

  40. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

In no particular order, these are my most important needs for ’25: QB, RG, ILB/MLB, S… and I think I would add CB in there as well.

  41. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

My Cam Smith opinion is… I’m throwing his way evey time. The numbers show it too. I’m not giving up on him. He’s basically a rookie so hoping he tightens things up as he plays more games.

  42. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

Roster Moves | We have been awarded TE Jack Stoll off waivers from Philadelphia and waived LB David Long Jr.

I guess there was a reason he wasn’t playing!

  43. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    David Long waived

  44. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Hmmmmmmmm? Someone not happy with his TE room?

First they resign Rucci back to the practice squad and now sign Stoll.

That, or Ingold might be out longer and they need extra TE’s active.

  45. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M, what do you think of OG Nate Davis who was just released from the Bears?

    Wyoming mentioned his release earlier.

  46. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Funny how David Long was waived after I just posted about Jay Higgins! LOL 😉

  47. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I don’t know WTF happened with David Long. Last season, he was a STUD for us… adequately replacing (and then some) a fan favorite in Elandon Roberts.

    Sad.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

You’d think he’d be playing for that next contract.

I think it is liability in coverage and also I think he would shoot gaps too early trying to make a play but instead totally take himself out of the play. Saw him do that a few times this year.

Walker seems to play much more disciplined and better in coverage.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yeah, man, I hear ya on all of the above… especially Long in coverage. Walker has surprised me with his patience and getting it done, though he’s no world-beater.

  48. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

As far as defensive snaps, Weaver is learning his players and who is performing best. As a fan I don’t care.

  49. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M13, depending on who declares for the draft, Alabama has 2 nice ILB’s who may enter. Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell. Lawson is not so great in coverage but Campbell seems to be their cover ILB. I watched the Alabama/LSU game and Campbell seemed to be everywhere. Campbell is 6’3, 244 pounds and projects to run in the low 4.5’s. He had 12 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 FF, 1 PD vs LSU.

Though, I don’t think his instincts are up there with Higgins or Stutsman.

  50. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The only Iowa player I’d draft in the 2-3rd round is Lachey. I’d take him in the third, but I could see him going earlier. I think the rest are 5th rounders or later. Guys like Higgins, Castro, Johnson and Jackson could all be solid pros but probably not much more. Guys like Kaleb Johnson and Nick Jackson might have the physical ability to do best at the next level out of all those guys.

    ———-

I must agree with ya, Steve. Wynn’s unavailability hurts us as much as a healthy scrub taking his place. We definitely need dependability, coupled with talent.

Thus, a long-term LG is another need of ours for the 2025 season.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As far as I’m concerned, our Guard play has been nothing short of horrific this season. And that’s one of the reasons our RB’s YPC are down so significantly this season from last.

I think Eich is a ‘fair’ swing-O-Lineman at best, being he can play all 5 positions… which is rare, indeed. However, he truly sucks as starting material.

We must upgrade both Guard positions.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And Robert Jones has only been good enough to be a backup Guard in this league. He also has an injury history.

Doubled down at Safety because I don’t know what is going to happen there. Mukuba has impressed me since before he transferred from Texas. He’s just smallish for a safety but great at FS and NB, runs a 4.33.

Don’t know how Thor Griffith is going to pan out in the NFL. He’s big, quick, strong as an ox (when he transferred from Harvard to Louisville for his 5th season, he benched 225 pounds 45 times and ran a 1.65 split). Besides, I like the name.

I don’t know anything about how these guys are projected. Is Lachey really available 150? Isn’t that late 4th? That seems a bit low. I wonder if his injury history is becoming an issue for teams.

It fluctuates through the season based on what they feed the simulator. Lachey was the #2 TE earlier in the season. When they do an update, it may push one position group through the sim over another. They do feed injuries into this simulator along with stats and other stuff that cause players to drop.

Kind of how we see certain position groups during the draft slide or go fast.

Outside the simulator BS, I think Lachey is top 5 TE easy with Loveland, Fannin, Warren and this other dude I can’t remember. I think the top 5 TE’s go by top of 4th. It’s not a deep class.

Lachey’s yards per catch is down this year and hasn’t caught a TD yet this season probably is playing a factor in his ranking.

This is Harold Fannin Jr. who has jumped up draft boards into the top 3 for the TE position. He is being compared to Jannu Smith though not as big.

Don’t forget about S Patrick McMorris guys! He is in the “designated to return” from IR, so he has another couple of weeks to come back. I think we definitely have to see what McMorris can do before we draft another S

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Mike, the thing is, McMorris is the only safety under contract right now for 2025 and he is totally unproven.

Everything, of course, will come down to who we sign in free agency. We have little to no cap with a ton of players on 1 year contracts to replace or resign. So, you can’t expect much there.

True, but it might be time to switch Ramsey to S, and bring in some more CB’s too.

That is also true. We have Cam Smith, Storm Duck and Ethan Bonner still developing.

With 10 picks I think we still need to draft one.

If we are able to resign Holland and I don’t think it is out of the question, him and Ramsey at Safety would be sick!

There should be some good CB’s if we are still picking in the top 15. Travis Hunter will be gone. Same with Will Johnson (my fav). There are two other CB’s I like who should be there for us in Benjamin Morrison from ND. He’s a very good lockdown CB.

The other guy no one is talking about right now Shavon Revel Jr. from East Carolina. He’s 6’3, 195 pounds and runs a projected 4.40 forty. Dude is solid and stellar vs the run. He plays the run like a SS. I believe he has more TFL than any other CB in the country. My only ?? on him is at the point of attack against some of these beast WR’s in the NFL.

If we pick later than #15, I would look at Alabama’s Domani Jackson or Ohio State’s Denzel Burke.

If we don’t double down on OL early (2nd/3rd rounds), I would take a flier on North Dakota State’s Grey Zabel on day 3. He can play all 5 OL positions. He is a stud in the run game. I think his only knocks are arm length and may be better on the inside.
