Triumvirate of Failure

The trio of Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, GM Chris Grier and Head Coach Mike McDaniel, they are the Miami Dolphins Triumvirate of Failure. Of course it starts at the top with the owner who hired Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel, and then kept them on for at least one more season. The biggest problem is the culture here. It seems Stephen Ross is content with the Miami Dolphins being known as a friendly destination, the players love it here, it’s warm, fuzzy, friendly, almost like being on vacation all year round, and the team plays like it. We have an oft injured QB that wanted a lot of money, and because he had a few concussions, maybe Ross felt guilty and wanted to reimburse Tua for his pain and suffering. Any other franchise would have played Tua on his 5th YR option and have him prove/earn his next contract. Had they done that, well, our team would have looked a lot different. We could have kept some players that we let go, but honestly, the culture would still exist. A change needs to happen here, and I’m not convinced that change can/will happen with Stephen Ross in charge. If he ran this business like his real estate business, Grier and McDaniel would have been gone already, but Ross doesn’t seem bothered by any of this.

Right now, we have a friendly, amicable Head Coach supposedly loved by his players. Love does not equal respect. I’d love to hear what DT Calais Campbell really thinks of Mike McDaniel, and how he runs this team. He’s been around a few different coaches, he played in Baltimore for HC John Harbaugh, he played for HC Doug Marrone in Jacksonville where he really flourished (the team, not so much), he played in Arizona for HC Bruce Arians, and most recently, before he came to Miami he played for HC Arthur Smith in Atlanta. I’d love to know how he feels about the friendly vacation like atmosphere here in Miami, if he thinks that breeds a winning atmosphere. Well, we all know we have Grier and McDaniel this season and that’s the way it is, but it doesn’t hurt to look down the road. I really believe that this team needs a huge culture change. We need a leader of men, one that is respected, feared and revered, and it’s totally unnecessary whether they are liked. Don Shula was such a coach. He couldn’t give a rats ass whether you liked him, but you damn well had better do your job or he’d have your head on a platter. I know some feel that type of attitude has gone by the wayside, but I don’t.

LA Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh just came back to the NFL after a 10 year absence. One season back, and he made a huge difference. As many of you know here, I wanted Jim Harbaugh here years ago. He’s a disciplinarian, a no nonsense, hot tempered, respected Head Coach, a Head Coach that wins! In 5 seasons, 4 with the 49ers, and last season with the LA Chargers (Who were 5-11 in ’23), Harbaugh’s NFL record is an astounding 55-25, good for a .685 winning %. He’s a no nonsense, old school guy. I tell you what to do, we win, and things are good, you don’t do as I say, you sit or get cut. Our team so desperately needs that, it would be the logical change from our “Club Miami” vacation getaway atmosphere. When multiple players who were here sound off saying we’re soft” and players who played on other teams come here and say “we always knew if he got on them they’d fold”, you can frigging believe it’s true.

All I can hope as a Dolphins fan now is that Chris Grier/Mike McDaniel do nothing further to make this team worse, meaning trading away future picks, mortgaging the future cap by restructuring players who should be gone when you can cut or trade them like WR Tyreek Hill, DE Bradley Chubb, and QB Tua Tagovailoa. You DON’T TOUCH THOSE CONTRACTS!!! I also don’t want them spending desperately and foolishly in Free Agency to try and win enough this season to keep their jobs. I pray they leave this team in decent enough shape for the next regime so that they can quickly rebuild and bring winning and respect back to Miami.

I feel the QB and the team have adopted the same personality. There are so many fans I have interacted with here, and on Twitter that feel like QB Tua Tagovailoa is a good enough QB to win with, and he deserved his big contract. Just look around the NFL right now, and you’ll see QB’s winning who were just drafted, and these guys are not softies who must remain protected behind an All-Pro offensive line. These guys are athletes who can throw the ball, and can take it and run if necessary, and get back up and play, not taken off the field on a stretcher. QB Bo Nix (RD 1 #12) is one of those guys. Jayden Daniels (RD 1 #2) is another. Drake Maye (RD1 #3) is another. In last year’s draft, CJ Stroud (RD1 #2) has had some ups and downs, but CJ Stroud has won 2 playoff games already, and the New England Patriots have tons of cap space to build a nice team around their QB Drake Maye. Bo Nix who was not very highly regarded played very well this season and showed a lot of potential. The point is, we need to aim higher here fans, don’t settle, try to be better! Tua is not the answer. We made a tremendous mistake paying him like an elite QB. Not that ESPN’s QBR is the end all, but it gives you a good idea how a QB performs all around, and although some of you here think Tua is a Top 10 QB, in ESPN’s QBR system, he’s 16th. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2024/passing.htm#passing::qbr. They got a HC to come here and put on a cheerleader outfit and grab some pom poms and be QB Tua Tagovailoa’s personal cheerleader. I guess they felt bad about the meany Brian Flores who treated him like any other player. I remember thinking Flores was a dick for that, and he might be, but he was more right than I thought. I think Tua needs tough love, not unconditional love. I think the whole damn team needs that. Enough of this love-fest bullshit, it doesn’t work in the NFL.

I know some of you here still feel QB Tua Tagovailoa is good enough to take this team all the way. If we can get Tua an All-Pro offensive line, and a great defense, we can do it, I know it! I know otherwise. We don’t have the financial capability to get us an All Pro O-line, and the guys drafting also seem incapable of such wizardry. If you look at the NFL Championship Round, you’ll see that each team features a QB with athletic ability and durability. They can all not only pass the football but rush the ball effectively when necessary. The Bills Josh Allen, the Chiefs Patrick Mahomes, the Eagles Jalen Hurts and the Commanders Jayden Daniels. This is what works in the NFL. I look at Tua, and I just get angry. He’ll never be that QB because if it’s necessary, he can make that play once, and then he’ll be taken off the field on a stretcher or a cart. It’s not me being facetious, this is what it is. Every team needs their QB to make plays outside the pocket, a TD run here. a first down there, and not get injured. Instead, we’re going to try and build a wall for our QB to stand behind and hope he doesn’t get hit, ever. We know how that ends, and it doesn’t end well. So again, my hopes for ’25 are our GM doesn’t screw the future cap for our team for the next few years, and maybe we have a good enough draft and Free Agency without overpaying anyone to make this team a preferable destination for a legit GM and Head Coach as well. Softies need not apply!

Abdul Carter 6’3, 259 pounds is Just like Parsons, IMO. He is a defensive chess piece who can disrupt from anywhere. He could be that big ILB we have been looking for.

His first 2 seasons playing ILB he still had 11 sacks, 3 FF, 1 INT and 9 PD’s. He did play ILB but PSU moved him around and he was affective from everywhere.

At his size, he has already ran a 4.48 forty. He would be the Josh Allen equalizer at ILB.

This is 2023 playing ILB and some off the edge.

I think collectively we, not any one blogster, could do better than Grier in the draft. That’s just using self proclaimed scouts on youtube as our scouts. LOL

    BBM,

I always wonder what really goes on in FOs and between teams and the league…or maybe just in a GM’s head….because all the draft lists that people put up here for decades NEVER get close to the actual full draft. The ones here are always better. How is that possible? Lol

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know right! If WE were in charge of free agency and the draft last year, we would of had a kick ass OL for sure (prior to any injuries).

We also would still have our 2025 3rd (pick #79) and not traded it for a 2024 4th round pick. We wouldn’t of had RB Wright but we would of had RB Ali Rasheen I mocked to us on day 3.

  8. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

Good write, and I realize where you’re coming from. However, I must disagree with ya on one point… that being we need an All-Pro O-Line to protect Tua.

We need a LEGIT enough O-Line that can keep the QB clean (Tua gets rid of the ball faster than any QB in the NFL), but equally or perhaps even more important, to pave the way for the running game.

Opposing teams dared us to run on them last season and we flopped. 2-deep Safeties almost all season long, and our YPC actually fell through the floor compared to ’23: that is unimaginable while Mostert, Achane and company didn’t suddenly forget how to run the football.

It’s simple Xs and Os. If your running game is killing it, they have to bring a Safety down into the box to reinforce the run-defense. They bring that Safety down into the box, and Tua is going to EAT all day throwing it to our receivers… as demonstrated in ’22 and ’23.

But to your greater point, our “Triumvirate of Failure” decided to go CHEAP on the O-Line at the Guard positions (due to the massively bloated contracts he’d handed out to certain skill players). Grief even joked how fans are more concerned about our O-Line than he is… and it came back to bite him right in his keister.

His foolishness is infuriating in this matter. This matter of going cheap on the O-Line is something every single Phins fan witnessed in the Saban years (’05 and ’06): stacked at the skill positions with Pro-Bowlers, but we couldn’t run and we couldn’t pass due to a WEAK-ASS O-Line.

I realize your frustrations with giving Tua the extension (and for more than one reason), but the O-Line needs to be fixed for both our running game and passing game… not just solely for protecting Tua, which really wasn’t an issue (again, he gets it out fast). Tua needs to be protected from himself trying to be Superman, which at least Grief addressed in his exit-presser… rightfully or wrongfully, as he tried his best to deflect blame.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Dolphins OL Coach Lemuel Jeanpierre will be one of the O-line coaches for the National Team in the 2025 Senior Bowl. That should be a good thing since we’ll absolutely be drafting some O-line

  11. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    BBM,

Yes, I realized earlier in the week that Braeden Daniels is signed with us through ’25. That’s good!

  12. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Texans firing OC Bobby Slowik after two seasons

    ———

I thought their defense was their problem

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – The O-line wasn’t awful in 2023 though, and it was mainly the same guys. The problem was Jones was exposed playing more time, and Isaiah Wynn only played in 6 games, starting 3. Jackson got hurt after 8, and that was that. C’mon, whatever you feel about Tua, you know if he gets hit, he’s hurt. How many times do you have to see it to believe it. He can “eat” like you said against weak teams, but every time we play a good team he’s a different QB. It’s just the way it is, and expecting it to be different after all this time is insanity in my opinion.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Sorry, my Brother… I disagree with ya on Tua.

I DO agree with ya on one thing regarding Tua, though: next hit he takes could be his last. That’s why it’s so important to sign a legit backup (my guy is Marcus Mariota) and draft a QB for the future (my guy is Gabriel Dillon).

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – One more thing, getting the ball out fast is great, if someone is open. The larger problem is what he does when they aren’t. This offense just gets shut down as everything is 2-5 yard passes, he’ll never hold the ball long enough for someone to get open. Do you disagree with me? He’s the worst at extending plays because he’s protecting himself. Can’t win against better teams like that

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh, I agree with ya on that, man! But then again, get rid of the 2-deep Safeties, and there’s going to be somebody open.

It begins with fixing the O-Line so that we can run again. Make Miami Run Again!

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We need to be a tougher team, and running the ball in between the tackles needs to be a thing we do well. Look, I might be wrong. If the run game becomes a thing we can count on both inside and outside, who knows, it might make a huge difference in the pass game. I have to see it to believe it.

  15. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

Here’s another one for ya, regarding the “Triumvirate of Failure”. Isn’t Mike McDaniel the mastermind of running games? What happened, Coach McD?!!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Exactly, but he’s over his head running the whole show. It happens, a lot of guys are. Robert Saleh will be back as 49ers DC next season, he signed today

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Reporter: Coach McD, what happened to your running game last season? Aren’t you a highly decorated run-game coordinator?

      McD: Well… uh… umm… I… ya know… umm… it’s like… uh… well it… uh… umm… we thought that… uh… umm…

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – Did you see my comment about Lemuel Jeanpierre?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, I did. That is a positive thing for us!

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s pretty big. Being around all those guys, and seeing the other team as well is a nice thing for us. I’d be surprised if we don’t end up with a player that plays in the Senior Bowl

  17. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m going to reiterate. Just because the Guard positions are so very important to address does not equate to needing to take one in the 1st round. We run a very specific Offense that requires very specific traits. If the shoe doesn’t fit, don’t over-draft for the sake of filling the position.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s the quickest way to get a GM (and a HC) fired. That stated, I’m sure many are hoping we over-draft a Guard! LOL

  18. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

All we need to do is to sign a solid FA Guard (there are 4 available… sign the best for our OBS) and draft a solid Guard. Bring Isaiah Wynn back on the cheap, and we’ve got Braeden Daniels signed through ’25.

It’s gravy to me, but these things must be done.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

One more thing regarding our ZBS (or OZS). We needn’t sign via FA nor draft the fleetest-of-foot players at Guard position… we just need them to be able to move enough when necessary.

We need some BEEF at the Guard positions for the inevitable man-to-man sits in goal line and short yardage sits. Thus, we don’t want to draft a guy who’s so fleet on his feet he can’t move defenders.

It’s time to bring some BEEF to the Guard positions.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

ESPECIALLY being Center Aaron Brewer isn’t a a snow-plow. We need to reinforce his weakness, just make sure they can move when necessary as a ZBS Guard.

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

bills have been getting more than their share too this year, especially last week

that should tell you who I expect to win, unless…wide right

  51. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I expect Weaver to be the next Saints head coach

he doesn’t bring any unique skills, but he’s that tough guy coach we can use, coming off of the cupcake debacle of 2024

there’s others like him, he’s not a once a decade coach

new approach should be an HC with experience

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Half our starting defense will be new. Then, Phillips is coming off his second major injury/surgery same with Chubb if not released. CB Fuller is scared of getting another concussion.

I don’t think it will matter if our DC is Weaver or a new guy.

That said, Weaver has some stiff competition for that HC spot in McCarthy and Kellen Moore. I’m not really expecting Weaver to get the Saints job, but it could happen.

  52. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Weaver did his 2nd interview on Friday

typically that’s one of those don’t let him leave the building chances

but the saints appear to be waiting

and my guess is that’s bc Kliff Kingsbury is not doing interviews while the commanders are in the postseason

I think Kingsbury is their top target

  53. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The draftaholic in BBM hopes we lose Weaver for the Saints HC job just for the 2026 comp picks.

  54. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I like that Ryder has the same thinking as many of us in getting a big bodied WR on day 3 of the draft. I think I did a mock draft not long ago selecting WR Kaden Prather when Savion Williams was off the board. He would be a good day 3 pick.

  55. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

WR Ricky White III, UNLV, 6’1 190 is another day 3 prospect.

  56. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  58. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Commanders, made the playoffs by having a weak schedule. It’s showing. Sound familiar

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

maybe, but they’ve got a good team, with a QB, that plays like a 10 yr quality vet and makes those around him better

  59. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Bringing in average players, as has been the Dolphins’ unintended practice for at least the last few years, is not working.

it’s not the players being brought in per se

it’s the type of players, and how 🧁 is coaching/using them

    arguments for Grier

look at tge rosters of the top teams, they have a handful of players that get it done, when it matters and the rest of the team is guys that compliment the main guys

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

at the top of the list for those teams is a QB who can get it done. You can’t win consistently in this league without one. Impossible in today’s NFL.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Agreed Bri, I’ll say it a billion times until people realize how much of a problem that is. It’s compounded by the fact that we’re paying him like he’s a top 5 QB, when he’s more like 15

  60. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Looks like the QB who got benched for Tua is going to the SB

    Philly looks really good

  62. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    BBM,

Philly has built their team the right way- through the OL and DL. Additional, they don’t trade for players and give away high draft picks. Conversely, they get Devonte Smith and a first rounder for trading down six spots to a team that chose a comparable WR.

  63. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Michael Dieter (former Dolphins C) in for Tyler Biadasz

  82. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Either of these teams will destroy us next season if we can’t stop the run, and we play the Bills twice a season. So should Calais Campbell retire, come back and go to another team, or even come back to us at age 100… we HAVE to get somebody to complement Zach Sieler in order to stop the run.

I’m talking about a DT… not a NT or NG, but a 3-down DT who can kill the run and who’s pass-rushing prowess is beginning to take shape.

His name rhymes with Nalter Wolen.

  83. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

You would think the Bills would try something else on 3rd or 4th and 1 by now.

Reggie McKenzie going to Titans in a similar role he had here in Miami. Don’t think we get any comp picks but maybe addition by subtraction?

  86. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Wow, great defensive call

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bri, think it has to be a clear promotion, and even then, as Rock pointed out, I think it was intended for a coach or executive that was groomed by the team. McKenzie was already an established exec.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

it was supposed to be a promotion from what I read. Whichever job he originally interviewed for it was going to be, unless they hired him for another. I’m sure that’s the case and we’ll get screwed out of picks. Don’t blame him for leaving.

  91. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Good article Mike! I mostly agree except Flores is just as bad as McD in a similar way. Dude can’t take responsibility for his failures and flaws. That’s not good head coaching material.

I think Tua would have been fine if our coaching and ownership team didn’t cave to media pressure at the first sound of criticism. If Tua is willing to put himself at risk, then there are doctors who would sign off on him playing a lot earlier than our current ones allow. It’s amazing how soft our society is today. How totalitarian the people ‘looking out for safety’ are.

Our management is that soft, so I agree that we need to move on from Tua at some point. First though, can we at least get a solid OL, like the top playoff teams, and run the damn ball?!! I just want a playoff win at some point. This group of managers won’t get us there. Soft owner, dumb GM, cowardly HC. That’s just not a winning combo.

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hey New Age, thanks! I don’t think Flores is HC material either, but I also don’t think he was completely wrong now in the way he handled Tua. It’s like Ross made a mandate that this team has to be Tua-centric, and he found a HC willing to be his cheerleader. They’ve created a monster. He’s not worth the coddling, and 100% not worth what they’re paying him. Until Tua’s gone, this team isn’t going anywhere.
