Dolphins need difference makers in NFL Draft and Free Agency

Despite the desperate situation both GM Chris Grier and Head Coach Mike McDaniel are in, they need to proceed as responsible stewards for the Franchise, not 2 guys trying to save their jobs. We need difference makers on this roster, and a lot of them. What that means to me, is no trading away picks from the future, and certainly no trading future assets to get players in Free Agency. There are so many roster spots available due to the multitude of 1 year contracts given out last season after signing QB Tua Tagovailoa to a 4 YR/$212.4M contract. When Rock says Tua wasn’t Grier’s biggest mistake, he may be right, he may be wrong, but either way, he was his most expensive mistake. Enough about Tua, this team has to find players that make an impact for this team, and not in a year or two, but now.

I think it would be in the team’s best interest to stay put at #13 and get the best player we can. I have no problem trading back, but if there’s a highly rated player there, get him, don’t get cute and try to get more picks and lose that player. You might just end up with 2 guys who don’t amount to anything when you could have had a safety that changes the secondary, or a TE that transforms the offense, or a lockdown CB, something we haven’t seen here in a while. My point is, we can’t just build the team around Tua hoping we can push him over the hump and make the playoffs and actually compete in a playoff game. I think we could potentially be behind not only the Bills next season, but the Patriots and the Jets as well. The Jets have a new GM, new HC, and 8 picks, #7, #42, #92, #109, #146, #156, #188 and #210. The Patriots have 2nd year QB who might take a step forward in Drake Maye, they have loads of cap space available, tops in the NFL at $125.8M and 9 picks starting at #4 in RD1. Our Dolphins have no cap space, the same guys making the picks that have failed for too long, and GM Chris Grier went all in and failed miserably last season, and let go 2 of our better players to pay an unreliable, oft injured QB who doesn’t play well in either the cold or big games.

Realistically, this season shouldn’t have high expectations unless somehow we have an excellent draft and somehow manage to fill the roster, which at this time looks like close to 30 roster spots, better than possibly expected. In some ways I think that could be a good thing for the team, because with high expectations, we didn’t live up to them at all. My feeling is this team is on a 1 year trial, because unless somehow we overachieve and win a playoff game, or even if I lower the bar a tad and we even actually compete in a playoff game, I think Chris Grier, Mike McDaniel and QB Tua Tagovailoa will all be gone. No new GM is going to want to retain Mike McDaniel as HC, and what GM is going to want to pay a mid QB who can’t play anywhere near up to his huge contract? On the other hand, if Grier gets desperate and uses future assets to try and fix this busted jalopy this season, he should be fired on the spot for that crime.

Every Dolphins fan is worried about the offensive guard spots, believing if Tua has protection, and a bona fide running game as well, this team could compete with the best. While that’s actually possible, what are the odds that GM Chris Grier can fulfill that tall task, and properly identify the right players both in the draft and free agency, with so little money to do so? Well, let’s just say my level of confidence in that duo is truly at an all time low right now. If you have a high level of confidence in Grier/McDaniel, God bless you for you sir, are one supremely optimistic, positive minded son of a gun! The clock is definitely ticking on this regime, although with Stephen Ross apparently asleep at the helm of ownership, maybe that’s only wishful thinking at best.

My plan for this offseason is to go into the draft and get as many impact players as we can. Forget about position, in other words don’t overdraft an OG at #13 when there is a great Safety, TE, DT, EDGE rusher available, just because everyone thinks better OG play will take us to the Superbowl. Honestly, this team is so far from that conversation right now, it’s silly as can be to feel that way. Even the roster spots that at this moment that are filled, there are so many questions. DE/OLB Bradley Chubb, LT Terron Armstead, OLB Jaelan Phillips, I may as well add in WR Tyreek Hill who exited the ’24 season with cryptic messages after the game, after excusing himself from actually finishing Game 17 without notifying his teammates. TE Durham Smythe, RB Raheem Mostert, 2023 2nd RD pick (#51) CB Cam Smith, I mean there really are serious question marks along the top of the roster. Is it possible the team and Hill can mend the relationship? Sure, Coach Mike is everyone’s friend, so it shouldn’t be difficult, but can we really count on Hill? It seemed Hill was just super frustrated by not getting any passes downfield, but when your QB MUST get the ball out in less than 2.0 seconds to try and finish a season (AND FAIL!), this is one of the frustrating aspects of having a fragile QB. Let’s all celebrate Tua’s 72.9% completion percentage when the majority of his passes were 5-10 yards downfield. Of course Hill is going to be frustrated, although for what he get’s paid, he should probably just STFU!

I’m not getting into specifics with the draft just yet, I haven’t done my deep dive at this time, I’m really in a downward spiral as a Miami Dolphins fan right now, I just don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. I will get to it most likely, no promises, but we have in house a bunch of guys, led by BBM who are fully capable of entertaining those that need their draft fix. Thanks Mike! Anyway, maybe the spring weather will pull me out of the winter doldrums, and maybe if the Mets can finally ink 1B Pete Alonso to a contract extension, I’ll start feeling more positive and upbeat.

it seems to be like we will have a good selection off off ball LBs on day 2 or 3 of the draft

but Jihad Campbell seems like the real deal

To add, I’m really happy he’s back. Only problem I have is he will still be pressing because he’s going to want more than the measly $24M he’ll make next season if he has a big year. Good thing is it gives the Mets the flexibility to go after Vlad which they will do regardless of how well Pete does.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

yeah, he’s got to realize that is the market now. First base has become like the RB position in the NFL. Not so sure he’s going to do better than the 7 year $157 extension he was offered last year.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

the second year is a player option, so it’s really a one year deal

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bri – 2nd year option, but if he doesn’t kill it this year, he’ll take that $24M, we can get Vlad, and Vlad can take 1B and Pete can DH.

  6. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

Thanks for the content. I’d say there are only about 12-15 actual 1st rounders this year. I wouldn’t really have a problem trading back. Also, if this team is really gonna start building for the post Tua period…which I doubt they will….it might be worth it to make some trades to have ammo to move up next year to get a QB.

I think this draft is just wide open where they could do anything. There’s nobody I’d HAVE to get at #13 this year. I think the only good value at that pick will be DL. I’d rather have 5 or 6 2-3 round picks.

I was just working on a project where I put ‘1st Round worthy players’ (via PFN and PFF combined) on a list for us at our 3 positions of need (IOL, IDL, and S).

Came up with 16 players between the two sites! And we damn well know at least half (probably even more) of those players will end up going in the 2nd round or later, due to teams aggressively going after the QB, WR, CB, and EDGE positions (the TALENT positions).

As several of us have been saying, this is a relatively weak Draft class… maybe only 12-15 TRUE 1st rounders, if even that (see Randy’s post at 10:06 AM)… I concur.

I would prefer a tradedown scenario (ALL of my mocks have been trading down from R1P13 to date), and hit the ‘sweet spots’ in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

The only exceptions I’d make (as of today, that is… can’t wait for the Combine!) would be if we had a top-10 graded talent fall to us @ R1P13… a Mason Graham or a Will Johnson, for example.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I might even make an exception for Tyler Warren… if we have a PLAN. As currently constituted, I can’t see using R1P13 on the TE position when we have the best TE in Phins history on our roster: Jonnu Smith.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Sorry, Brian… if I’m GM of the Phins, I can’t play favorites regarding our STUD(!!!) Tyler Warren. I’d be fired in a second unless there was a MAJOR plan in place for the future.

And I think Chris Grier is fighting for his future at this point in time.

I like Hancock a lot. He could end up a better slot CB than Kohou. Solid in every area including tackling and run D. He can play outside and safety, versatile. Good blitzer as well. Seems he is gone a lot when I get to that #135 pick so I take Riley instead.

I think someone is going to pay Kohou more than we want to.

    ————–
I’ve also liked Sherfield and was surprised we parted ways with him. But if it comes down to Sherfield and Cracraft, I’m taking Cracraft for what he does outside of catching the ball.

Cracraft is Hines Ward-light when it comes to blocking downfield.

  21. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s absolutely a game-changer — especially in the West Coast Offense / OZB scheme — when ya have a WR who can block.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think it’s a damn shame that Chase Claypool didn’t succeed with us, but that’s on him… not on us. He would have been PERFECT for us if he took his craft seriously.

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If we want a ‘sizable’ WR who can actually block, his name is Elic Ayomanor, WR, Stanford. 6’2″, 210, with a 4.42 40-time.

So in the event we part ways with Tyreek, I think Ayomanor would certainly be a target for us. PFN has him rated at #52, so we’d likely have to take him early on day 2.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

According to PFF College, Ayomanor is the 2nd best blocking WR available in the Draft. 1st? Giles Jackson, 5’9″, 187 pounds… we don’t need another midget WR.

Ayomanor has a better blocking rating than even Tyler Warren (72.7 for Ayomanor, 53.8 for Warren).

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Now then, do I take these PFF ratings as the ‘Bible’? Certainly not! It makes me want to go to the tape and discern matters for myself.

I want to see who, what, where, when, why, how, level of competition, health of player A vs player B in the moment, and the conditions of the event.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ayomanor is nice but I just can’t pull the trigger (at this point) on a WR in the second round. Especially with some nice prospects who might be there at #98 to #135 range.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

100% with ya, man. I’m sayin’ that IF Tyreek were to be traded (I don’t see it happening), we’d likely get a 2nd rounder in return.

To replace Tyreek, I’d highly consider Ayomanor to replace him.

If Tyreek is staying here, I’m not taking a WR so early either.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Even if not trading Tyreek, Jack Bech, as a 4th round target, graded very high in blocking as well per draftbuzz. Not sure what PFF says though.

  32. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

When I was looking at late round TE’s, I came across this guy from Wofford. He’s a TE/HB/FB. He would be a good UDFA pickup. Jordan Davis, 6’2, 240, good hands but mainly he’s a hell of a blocker and would definitely work him out as a FB and stash him on the PS. We have no backup for Ingold.

“Weaver despite the team having a different look, had this defense in the top 10, which is remarkable considering the talent that was missing or lost from the previous seasons. They were in the top 10 in scoring defense, rush, pass defense, 3rd down defense, and even in the top 5 in red zone defense. Those are impressive, all things considered. What makes this even more impressive is the fact that despite being a top-10 defense overall, the Dolphin’s defense was one of the worst defenses in sacks with 35 and forcing turnovers as they only had 10 interceptions. The Dolphins in 2023 had 56 sacks and 15 interceptions. If the Dolphins can get more sacks and turnovers, then Weaver’s defense will be one of the best in the league potentially.”

There are some FA options at WR (in our price range).

Tyler Boyd – 6’2, 203, coming off a poor year with poor QB play on the Titans. Before that he had 8 good years with the Bengals. He signed a 1yr contract last year for 2.4 million. We should have signed him instead of OBJ.

    Elijah Moore – 5’10, 180, 4.35 forty, coming off a 2yr 4.5 mill deal with Browns

Nick Westbrook – 6’2, 211, coming off rookie deal with Titans

Trent Sherfield – we know him

Justin Watson – 6’2, 215, coming off 2yr 3.4 mill deal with Chiefs

Tutu Atwell – 5’9, 165, coming off rookie deal with Rams

Olamide Zaccheaus – 5’8, 193, coming off 1yr 1.2 mill deal with Commanders

Dyami Brown – 6’0, 195, 4.44 coming off rookie deal

not sure who I want to win, really only want Eagles, so KC doesn’t get 2 in a row

want KC to win so Mahomes gets 1 more to catch up to Brady
