It’s All About Tua in ’25

Everyone has their logic and strategy as to what the Miami Dolphins need to do in the 2025 NFL Draft and Free Agency to be successful this season. I can’t stress enough that both GM Chris Grier and Head Coach Mike McDaniel are tied together and are both sitting on the proverbial “Hot Seat”, doing whatever they can to keep their jobs. The roster may have less gaping holes now than there was before free agency, but as I’ve pointed out, we got a lot of quantity, not quality. We signed a couple of free agent safeties (Ifeatu Melifonwu and Ashtyn Davis) that aren’t starting material. We signed a CB (Artie Burns) that isn’t starting material. We signed a couple of offensive linemen (OG James Daniels and OT Larry Borom), one of which (James Daniels) will be a potential starter. I say potential because James Daniels is coming off of an achilles tear injury last season at the end of September. He may either not be ready by the season’s start, or he may not be the same player he was before the injury. Most recently, we signed NT Benito Jones and that at least was a signing that should impact the team immediately, and potentially take some pressure off Grier and Weaver to nab a DT with the first pick.

There’s always many different approaches to solving things, and I speak for myself on my approach. You don’t have to agree, and I don’t expect you to. I think there are 3 people on the “Hot Seat”. The third member, previously undisclosed, is QB Tua Tagovailoa. His contract gets to the point where it can truly cripple this team if he’s not playing like an upper echelon QB, or just as bad, not available, as has often been the case. That’s why I think the first pick in the draft, regardless of what number that pick is, whether we stay put at #13, trade up (doubt it!), or trade back, we have to get that O-line fixed. Why? There is probably not a more polarizing figure on this team than QB Tua Tagovailoa, there are those that simply can’t stand him, and others that will defend him on any and every front. Regardless of which side you’re on, I think it’s fair to say that we need to know what his ceiling is. The only fair way to attempt to do this is to give Tua the best offensive line this team can muster. As of this writing, we don’t know whether LT Terron Armstead is going to play in 2025. If Armstead comes back, there’s still a very good chance he comes back more as a mentor and “break glass in case of emergency” type of situation. I know you draft guys, and you know who you are, love OG’s in the 2nd RD and later, and have traded back thousands of times to add more players, but we have quantity, and now it’s time for quality.

As of now, we have Patrick Paul at LT. Paul has 3 starts under his belt. We do not have a LG at the moment. Our OC is Aaron Brewer. Our hopeful starting RG is the aforementioned James Daniels, he of the achilles injury comeback. The RT is Austin Jackson, who last played November 3, 2024. He suffered a knee injury and missed the remainder of the season. Look at this through my lens for a moment. Many of you here were quite vociferous about the quality of our O-line, of course, in defense of QB Tua Tagovailoa, or perhaps just because it wasn’t very good. Either way, you obviously can see how this unit as currently constituted has question marks everywhere, with the exception of OC, where Aaron Brewer was solid. Can Patrick Paul who has started only 3 games be the guy to keep edge rushers at bay, and open up holes on the left side? Will RG James Daniels be ready and healthy to be effective in 2025? Same question for RT Austin Jackson. If there is a top quality OL available at #13, namely OT/OG Armand Membou (Missouri), OT/OG Will Campbell (LSU) and OT/OG Kelvin Banks (Texas), we need to get the one that’s still there at our pick. There are so many more guys that you might like, but you’d also probably have to admit that the three guys I listed are the cream of the crop.

This offensive line was poor last year at protecting the QB. QB Tua Tagovailoa wasn’t injured last season because of the O-line, no, it was his own stupidity engaging a defender like a running back, even if that defender was S Damar Hamlin who may be 10-15 lbs lighter than Tua. Our group of QB’s last season were sacked 43 times, Tua in particular, 21 times. For a guy who throws the ball before 2 seconds on most plays, that seems like a lot, but the other guys including QB Tyler Huntley, Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle were sacked 22 times in total between them. To be fair, none of those QB’s were ready for game action, it’s all about Tua, and will be as long as he’s here. This offense needs to hum, we need to be able to convert short yardage plays, and QB Tua Tagovailoa needs to be elite if we’re going to compete and win a win a playoff game. There can be no excuses. If Grier takes a CB or S in RD1, and they take OG Grey Zabel or Jonah Savaiinaea and they don’t pan out, Tua is in trouble and Grier and MM are looking for jobs. Actually, all 3 (Grier,McDaniel and Tua) are all probably gone, and rightfully so.

One of the very respected bloggers here, M13 feels we need to go CB, and he’s not wrong, it’s a hole that needs to be fixed without a doubt. My feeling is this team has been built on offense, and the production we got from our offense last season, even with Tua at the helm, was underwhelming. With WR’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, both very well paid, catching balls from QB Tua Tagovailoa, also extremely well paid, this team is offense centric. That doesn’t mean we can ignore the defense, but this offense has to be scoring in the 28-30 PPG range to be what we want to be. Last season with Tua at QB we scored 24.6 PPG. Neither WR, Hill or Waddle managed 1000 yards receiving. Our best RB, De’Von Achane didn’t crack 1000 yards. Mike McDaniel is an offensive coach. The defense is built on straws. As flawed as the O-line is at the moment, we’re relying on 2 OLB’s who are constantly injured. We still need a DT/DE to play on the other side of Benito Jones to be Sieler’s bookend. As M would point out, we have no starting CB opposite CB Jalen Ramsey. I’d point out despite signing Melifonwu and Davis, we don’t yet have a starting S. We do, however, have a nice group of inside linebackers with Brooks, Dodson, Gay and Britt. The outside linebackers are all question marks with the exception of 2nd year player Chop Robinson. Can we ever count on Jaelan Phillips to give us a full season healthy, and the same for Bradley Chubb?

If I were Chris Grier, I would make sure this offensive line was at the very least top 15, and if I could do anything to make it better, I would. That means don’t be surprised if we not only take an OL at #13, but another one before RD 5. DE/DT, CB, and S are all priorities, but with my job on the line, and for Mike McDaniel too, I need Tua to have the chance to get through the season healthy, have the run game be great, a big part of what made him special as run game coordinator for the SF 49ers. We need the hogs up front to open up holes for Achane and Wright and Mattison, especially on those short yardage plays we were miserable at last season. On that note, it would absolutely shock me if we went CB, DT or S before nabbing a top offensive lineman with our first pick. Now a signing of say OG Brandon Scherrf could change that, because he played at a high level last season and played all 17 as he had the previous 2 seasons as well, so three in a row. This is possible, too, with the restructure of RT Austin Jackson. Honestly, I’m disappointed they didn’t give him another year or two as well, this whole team is pretty much gone after a year or two, very strange, but as I’ve said many times, Grier hasn’t built a team, merely filled roster spots year in and year out.

·The Dolphins have given no guaranteed money in 2026 to a single player signed in free agency

    ———–

In a way, he is still wrong. The signing bonuses are guaranteed money spread over the contract.

James Daniels 2025 base salary is fully guaranteed. Then, his 6 mill signing bonus is spread out at 2 mill per season through 2027.

Nick Westbrook’s 2025 1.2 mill salary is fully guaranteed. Then, his 2 mill signing bonus is spread out at 400K over 5 years to include 3 void years.

Yeah, they got the money this year, but you have to go by when it affects the cap.

In a way, he is right. It’s just a comment that doesn’t mean anything because in the end they affect future cap.

    Mike E,

Once again, a very solid write! You make a very compelling argument to draft our LG @ R1P13. I have to be honest with you (always am)… gun to my head right now, who do I pick @ R1P13? The safest, cleanest bet is whoever is available of the three O-Linemen you mentioned above: Campbell, Membou, or Banks.

I happen to believe it will be Banks who will be available, AND he can play LT (not that we’d ever have a LT go down for any length of time, 😉 )

That being stated, it will be a LONG season if we can’t get legit play out of the starting CB opposite Ramsey. As currently constituted, that player isn’t going to get much Safety help, either: I agree that our Safety signings to date are meh.

Dammit, I wish we had two 1st rounders this year so as to address both LG and CB.

Thank you for the kind mention in your write! We’ll see who else we may add before Draft day… perhaps Brandon Scherff solves the problem?

MikeE., another reason to make your point stronger is Zack Wilson. If Tua hurts himself again, we need an, at very least, above average OL.

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jevon Holland does not expect Miami to draft a safety high to replace him. What he says makes sense. Referring how Weaver wants to build his defense.

“When you look at the Ravens and how they are built, because it’s kinda their scheme, the front is where they make their bread,”

“If the safeties and corners are good, it just makes the defense even better. I feel their thought process is to build from the bottom up.

“The scheme for the safeties is more an umbrella thought process. A keep-everything-in-front-of-you mindset — like staying deep.”

    Added about McMorris:

“Patrick last year was sitting behind me and Jordan Poyer,” Holland said. ”He can really play, just needs that opportunity and I think he’s going to get that.”

No doubt we’re drafting DL and OL probably early and often and what I mean by that is through the first 4 rounds.

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We need to add a multiple technique DT in the draft. Some quickness and power.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

His name is Walter Nolen. Second best run-stopper in college football from a season ago, and his upside as a pass-rusher is nearly off the charts.

With any kind of luck (I highly doubt it happens), he falls to us @ R2P48 due to reports of his immaturity as a person (not as a player).

And if Calais Campbell comes back (I HOPE SO!), he’s the perfect person to make Nolen grow.

  19. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,

Kenneth Grant is just stuck in the back of my mind. If that young man is willing to commit himself fully, I think he could be a beast. I’m projecting a little more than I like to, but the clay is there to be molded. Potential….such a filthy word. I hate it. Lol

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

My fav DT’s for the interior (first 4 rounds) are: Kenneth Grant, Tyleik Williams, Alfred Collins, Jordan Phillips, Jamaree Caldwell and CJ West.

Opposite Seiler: Mason Graham, Walter Nolen, TJ Sanders, Omarr Norman-Lott, Darius Alexander and JJ Pegues.

Please say NO to Derrick Harmon and his 39% tackling grade and NO to Deone Walker who has to take plays off due to conditioning issues and will not survive the heat in Miami. I would be more concerned with the drive in Walker than I would be with Grant.

  21. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think most of us agree that our priority needs (as of today) in the Draft (in no particular order): OG, DT, CB, and S.

IF we could somehow acquire another day 2 pick, that would be GRAND, in order to address our priority needs via the Draft… and hope they all pan out as starters from the jump.

Again, there’s more than one way to skin a cat. My draft isn’t better than yours and vice-versa, so if we can address these four needs before day 2 of the Draft ends, we’re going to be in better shape.

Right now — and after clearing out some cap space with the restructure of Austin Jackson — we should sign Brandon Scherff… and do it before Draft day.

I’m STILL going to draft an O-Linemen before day 2 of the Draft is over, but the signing of Scherff would help us to focus on Defense in the Draft.

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Here’s another question to ask oneself. What happens if Jalen Ramsey gets injured at some point this coming season? Never mind who may be playing opposite of him with two mediocre Safeties for support… our season would be OVER!

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree with Holland that we’re not drafting a Safety early, but for different reasons. Glad to hear that’s the case, for whatever the reason is. We need O-line and D-line, and then CB and S

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McMorris got hurt early on and was cleared for the second half of the season. He played well when we were banged up at safety. If we’re going to to rely on front 7 and play shell coverage a lot of the time, you don’t pay $15M for a safety or draft one high.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Exactly, those middle round guys like Castro, Winston Jr., Ransom, Bowman Jr, Moore, Sanker, the other PSU guy Reed, etc.

I think you could find a promising Safety in every round of the draft. It’s a good class.

Doubled down at CB. Ramsey becomes very tradable pre 6/1 in 2026. Cap hit for a team trading for him would only be around 13 mill in 2026 and 2027. Though, his cap hit for the Dolphins would be 25 mill in 2026 and 26.8 mill in 2027 if not traded. Dolphins could get a 2026 1st round pick on that deal and still clear 6.5 mill in 2026 cap. That would go a long way in trying to secure a top QB in the 2026 draft.

Regarding all of the draft simulators one can use… seems every time I take a CB @ R1P13, I’m getting hosed in terms of available O-Linemen and D-Linemen who are system fits for us in the 2nd round: I either have to over-reach for a system fit or settle for a non-system fit.

Of course, these are all simulations and based on somebody’s / draft site’s opinion of the way the Draft will unfold… it differs from site to site. But still, it seems somewhat consistent from site to site.

We’re still a month out from the Draft, but I sense we’re going to be moving up and down the Draft once again… rightfully or wrongfully. Do NOT be surprised if we trade down from R1P13 (not too far down) is my opinion… unless someone we rate VERY HIGHLY is available.

Nolen isn’t really anything special. We see guys like him come out pretty much every year. We’ll see how high he goes, but I don’t think I’m touching him. There are also plenty of guys I like better given the whole package.

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’ve been looking at a lot of mock drafts, and I think there are just so many sites and analysts that seem to just have no idea what the Dolphins need. Most of the drafts I’ve looked at this morning have us taking either S Malaki Starks or S Nick Emmanwori. We don’t yet have a starting LG, we don’t have a DT/DE to bookend with Zach Sieler and we don’t have a corner opposite Ramsey, but we’re drafting a safety in RD 1.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Actually, Crabbs has the Dolphins taking CB Jahdae Barron at #13 in his latest mock. He has Kenneth Grant ranked as DT2 going to 49er’s at #11 and OT/OG Will Campbell going to Cowboys at #12 or feels the Dolphins would take either of those 2 before Barron. Apparently, he sees it the same as us in needing LG, DT and CB as top needs.

  67. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Players Crabbs predicts as 1st rounders who are always there in the top of the 2nd round on the simulators: DT Kenneth Grant to 49er’s at #11, OT/OG Grey Zabel to Colts at #14, QB Jaxson Dart to Steelers at #21, CB Darian Porter to Packers at #23, CB Maxwell Hairston to Vikings at #24 and LB Carson Schwesinger to Rams at #26.

  71. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

As Tim said, we have 14 OL on the roster. Only 3 of the 14 are listed as OG. Of those, I think, we have to plug the OG positions with:

    OG James Daniels

    OG Liam Eichenberg

    OG Chasen Hines

    LT Braeden Daniels

    LT Larry Borom

That’s it, 5 of the 14. Two of the OL are centers Brewer and Meyer. The other 7 seem to be pure OT’s to me. I don’t know.

Not very promising for improving that area.

James Daniels, Eichenberg and Borom were the only OL resigned or signed to guaranteed contracts.

  72. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    —————

Randy, I’ve moved off Nolen @ R1P13 for about a month now, so we agree. If we can move about to get him later, I’m good with that though.

Are we talking about the same Walter Nolen, I ask? He was the 2nd best run-stopper in college football last season and his pass-rushing acumen is what is in question… not the other way around.

I want a 4-down DT who will command doubles in order to spring Sieler AND shut down the run. Nolen is THAT GUY in this Draft class. And as the tape reveals, he’s going to put it all together as a pass-rusher in short order: he’s got the explosion, strength, and closing speed to become formidable in that department.

So why have I moved off Nolen @ R1P13? We again agree: it’s the character concerns. I know of a guy who might make a huge impact in Nolen’s character growth. His name rhymes with My Name Is Ample…

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

“So what’s my name? My name is ample

  76. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

No, there isn’t much value at OT. Simmons would probably be my #1 OT if there weren’t injury issues. Membou is okay but nothing special. There are question marks on every single 1-2 round OTs in this draft. Are they really OT? Even a guy like Campbell is a question mark. The quantity is there at OT/OG but the quality isn’t. With where we pick, we can still get a few very serviceable LOS guys and maybe one of them turns into a stud…hey, maybe two!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Thanks for the info. I don’t really know what direction to go and when on the OL. Most of the time I am going DT first as it seems to be the biggest hole right now. That is with the hope James Daniels is ready for the season.

    ———–

I believe that was the one they traded for a 4th last year to get RB Wright. I was ok with it when they did it but disappointed he didn’t get more reps and overused Achane when the season was more or less doomed.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Wright will get a lot more touches this year. Achane is definitely #1 and Mattison will likely be a situational back due to his experience, and he provides quality depth.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree. Year 2 in the system. I think we see Achane lined up even more at WR.
