The Pessimists Guide to the Miami Dolphins 2025 Season

Last week I gave you the positives, unfortunately for you guys who actually are optimistic about this season, you might want to skip this one! Realistically, I feel there is a greater chance this team has an unsuccessful season. We went into the draft with an awful lot of holes, and came out with many of the same holes. If you felt we needed only one 2nd tier OG and about 20 DT’s, drafted and undrafted, than you should feel like we nailed this draft. If you thought we needed 2 quality OL, a pass rushing DT/DE and possibly a NT too, two CB’s because Jalen Ramsey and Mike McDaniel don’t get along, and we don’t have a starter on the roster, and potentially a starting safety, this wasn’t your draft. In addition, if you felt we needed to have a better draft than our division rivals, well, we didn’t. Each team in our division, including the Buffalo Bills who own us, the New England Patriots who we have been owning, and also the NY Jets who we’ve been having our way with in recent years, ALL drafted better than we do, they have more cap space and better rosters than we do.

Three more negatives for you, Chris Grier is still the GM, Mike McDaniel is still the Head Coach, and Tua Tagovailoa is still the starting QB. You can make it four if you want to add that Stephen Ross still is the majority owner of the team. We had 10 picks going into the 2025 NFL Draft but came away with only 8 players. With Chris Grier as GM, it’s a necessary annual ritual to trade up and waste a pick or two doing so. This draft we traded up in RD 2 from pick #48 to pick #37 to take OG Jonah Savaiinaea, (Jo-nuh) (Sah-vai-uh-nigh-uh). Grier gave up our 2025 3rd RD pick in order to snare the big Samoan. He also traded away a 2025 4th RD pick (#116) for a 2026 3rd RD Pick from the Texans. Next year will be a strong QB class, so having that extra 3rd RD pick might come in handy.

I think we did well with the Kenneth Grant pick, he should be fun to watch, and Jonah Savaiinaea might work out at OG but I really wanted 2 OL in this draft. We seem to get bit by the injury bug every season on the O-line, and next on the depth chart is LT Ryan Hayes, LG Jackson Carman, C Andrew Myer, RG Liam Eichenberg and RT Larry Borom. If you feel confident with the depth there, God Bless you, you truly are an optimistic person. We brought in a lot of big bodies that everyone seems lit about, but it’s not all that different from what we did last season. We brought in lots of bodies, signed a host of 1 year contract guys and once again I stress big time, we got super lucky that 38 year old Calais Campbell was still around and decided to play here. This season we drafted Kenny Grant in RD 1, Jordan Phillips in RD 5, Zeek Biggers in RD 7, and maybe 10 other DT’s as UDFA’s. Again, lots of bodies, and I know some of you think we got a draft steal in Jordan Phillips. Heck, maybe we ddi, but will Mike McDaniel actually let him get playing time? Same goes for RB Ollie Gordon in the 6th RD. Ooooh, we got a BIG BACK! Yeah, we frigging traded up in last year’s draft, forfeiting a very valuable 2025 3rd RD pick to draft RB Jaylen Wright in RD 4. Sweet move Chris, love it! Mike McDaniel can only manage to find 67 carries for the guy we traded away a future 3rd Pick for. What on earth makes you believe he’s going to let a 6th RD pick see the field?

Now on to the $212M wonder, our QB Tua Tagovailoa. We got him a Samoan OG who has only blocked for Samoan QB’s! That oughta fix the O-line! Maybe we can clone him and he can play all 5 spots! Will this potentially help Tua play well against good teams? Will we belong on the same playing field as the Buffalo Bills and QB Josh Allen who is 8-1 against Tua, which would then make Tua 1-8 against Josh Allen. If that seems ugly, Allen has 23 passing TD’s, Tua 9. Allen has 5 INT’s, Tua has 10 INT’s. Josh Allen has a 106.9 rating. Tua 80.5. I see Dolphins fans on Twitter talking sh*t about Josh Allen and pontificating the greatness of Tua every day. These delusional imbeciles are clueless and no more fan than any Dolphins fan with their heads screwed on correctly. I root for the team, not specifically for one deficient player who can’t stay on the field and when he does, fails to compete against better teams and doesn’t rise to the level of the competition or the importance of the game. These are facts, not opinions, it’s been proven time and time again.

Yes, some of you are excited about 5th RD pick CB Jason Marshall. It’s actually possible he could start for us, because Jalen Ramsey and HC Mike McDaniel don’t see eye to eye, or at least that’s how it’s been reported. Either way, we gave Ramsey a pay raise just 6 months ago, and now we need to take a loss on either trading him or outright cutting him. Maybe UDFA from 2025 Storm Duck starts. Or, maybe we spend a good amount of cap space on young Asante Samuel Jr. who is still available due to a shoulder injury. That might actually be a good move except we know he’ll stay injured if we pick him up and pay him, right? At Safety, we picked up 2 safeties in FA that could potentially start. SS Ifeatua Melifonwu and FS Ashtyn Davis. Both have started, but neither has started much over the last 3 seasons, Melifonwu has 10 starts in 51 games and Ashtyn Davis has 6 starts in 51 games. Maybe we’ll get a combo of Melifonwu, Davis, Dante Trader Jr. who we drafted in RD 5, and Patrick Mcmorris who we drafted last season in RD 6. Maybe it will all work out.

At OLB, we have Chop Robinson returning from a successful rookie campaign. We also have 2 guys who unfortunately can’t stay on th field and stay healthy. OLB Jaelan Phillips is truly a courageous fella, he has rehabbed with such fervor each of the last 2 seasons, one from an achilles tear, and then last season from a friendly fire incident where he got hit by his own teammate helmet to knee. 3 seasons in a row, 3 rehabs. OLB Bradley Chubb missed the entire season last year so one would think he should be ready to go for 2025. We also have Quinton Bell, Mo Kamara, and Cameron Goode. Unfortunately, once you get past the first 3, as with most teams, it really falls off quality wise. If Phillips, Chubb and Chop all stay healthy and play well, this defense could be legit, especially if a few of the horde of defensive tackles we brought in can play as well, but then again what about that secondary? UGH!

What about the rest of the offense not named Tua Tagovailoa? RB Devon Achane is an exciting playmaker who will probably see more touches than anyone else on the offense. He’ll probably see more passes come his way, maybe less carries though if we decide to actually use RB’s Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon in pursuit of not being such a soft serve type of team. Do we actually vote WR Tyreek Hill in as Captain again? Hill loves to troll on social media but at least this team in his latest trolling, he got it right, and omitted QB Tua Tagovailoa from his top 5. WR Jaylen Waddle has shown he can be a #1 WR but had a down year and basically has been second fiddle since Tyreek Hill arrived. TE Jonnu Smith was fantastic last season and was probably our best offensive player along with De”Von Achane. We picked up a TE as an UDFA that BBMike really likes, Jalin Conyer, He’s stuck behind projects Tanner and Hayden Rucci, as well as blocking TE Pharoah Brown who we scooped up in FA. Brown should help in the blocking game, and add a few catches too, Anyone think we need another Jalen/Jaylen, Jaelan/Jalin? I really liked the addition of WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, the WR corps desperately needed a bigger bodies receiver who is physical and is a huge red zone threat. Westbrook-Ikhine had 9 TD receptions last season, which is one more than the combination of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. I also like slot WR Malik Washington in this offense and in the return game. Will backup QB’s Zach Wilson or newly drafted Quinn Ewers see the field this season? That’s almost a certainty with “The Frajeel”, it’s just a matter of when, and for how long.

articles about win/loss predictions are in the same category as trade predictions, 2026 mock drafts, draft grades a day after the draft…

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we had a great passing game in 2023, until LBs started dropping back further, into passing lanes

with no fear from our 2024 rushing attack it got worse

the key to our O is running the ball effectively, Savaiinaea and Daniels go a long ways towards making it work

To me our running game to be good or we won’t be. In 2023 we rushed for over 2,400 yards. In 2024 just 1,795.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      2,300

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I feel that if we can break 2K yards on the ground, we’ll experience success. Perhaps of equal importance? If we can gain 4.6+ YPC as a team on the ground, we don’t necessarily need to hit the 2K threshold.

Certainly, we need to be able to run the ball this season. Keep the LBs and Ss from playing in pass-coverage is the key to Offensive victory. Take that to the bank.

IF we can achieve as much, Tua will be able to carve up opposing Defenses at will.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

In a nutshell, that is more or less the desired outcome of every Offense in the NFL… BALANCE between the running game and passing game.

And if the running game fails, you can rely on the passing game… and vice-versa.

It ALL begins in the trenches… something we’ve neglected for far too long. We’ve got some hope this year with recent FA acquisitions and the Draft.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The skill is there, can we block for it?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

IF we can block for it, we’re going to be surprisingly successful this year, IMO.

  5. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Gun to my right now? I feel our Offense has the possibility of reclaiming a top-5 status, barring injury to key contributors. I feel our Defense is on the right track but for our weak-ass Secondary. Sign FA S Justin Simmons at Spotrac’s $5.8M/year, and I’ll feel much better.

If we stay healthy on Defense (especially at the EDGE position), we could once again become a top-10 Defense as we were last season under DC Weaver.

On paper, it’s possible we can make another run to the playoffs. It’s all about mitigation of INJURIES.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And YES… I would sign ASJ (Asante Samuel, Jr.). His medical recheck is in July and the Saints are all over him. IF his medical comes back positive (I’m sure it will), I’d enter the war for his services at CB.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not convinced the secondary is weak just yet, but they are questionable as a unit at this time. The LOS and Edge as you mentioned has to pan out.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Tim,

One must PLAN for the best laid plans to be foiled. In the case of S Justin Simmons, we’d be signing an instant starter on the relative cheap… and still have $10M+ to spend.

I also want insurance on the O-Line, being at least 2 starters get injured every single year for us.

  6. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

It’s also being ‘reported’ that a Ramsey trade deal is likely already done… we’re just waiting for another team to up the ante for him. The deal will be designated as a post-June 1st deal, so we’ll see if we get even more cap space to work with.

We’re not done adding to this roster.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I saw that about Ramsey and I’m not against adding Simmons or anyone else. I’m talking about our current roster.

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Tua and all the other overpaid offensive skill guys need to perform. You could say they ALL played like shit last year.

  9. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I am TOTALLY onboard to re-sign Xavien Howard. He is NOT going to be able to demand $$$, being he’s been out of the league for a year. He’s had time to heal, he’s still working out every single day and attending/hosting DB clinics, and we really could use him right now.

It’s probable that he could be had for veteran’s minimal $$$.

He still lives in Florida, for whatever that may be worth.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

his days as a cover corner are long gone, he be a good FS in the Weaver D

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s always been a willing tackler and he made some big hits. He has natural ball skills that not all DBs possess. Safety could be an option.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, overpaid in sports is antiquated, everyone is.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So Josh Allen and Tua both make over 50m, Allen is worth every penny, Tua not so much, that’s what he’s referring to

all those WRs bills let go had bad years last year

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m speaking in general terms. The market for the best you have is out of whack. I’ve said that for years. But I don’t care anymore because that’s the way it is.

    QB Milroe was #5.

I’ve also deleted paragraphs by accident while writing a new article, thank goodness for the undo tool they have.

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I thought Achane’s numbers were that great last year, they weren’t 7.9 ypc good, still respectable 4.5 with a bad OL

    https://www.si.com/nfl/dolphins/news/what-achane-expects-from-himself-in-2025-01jvch58t2e7

his 592 yards receiving with a 90% catch to target rate was good

I’d like to say he could get a combined 2k, but no reason to burn him out, when we have lots of weapons

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Good average, but he had WAY too many carries stuffed for a loss.

He had zero yards or a loss on 24% of his runs last season. Much of that is on the line, but he takes blame for a lot of it because he was pressing too much instead of taking the 3 yards.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I thought they overused Achane in the run game. We just drafted Wright who was supposed to a more physical runner and fast too, not quite as fast as Achane though. Still, it seemed we’d give him a carry or two and then that was it. A lot of RB’s need a bunch of carries to get a feel and get in rhythm but that never happened. I think that was a huge fail by MM

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not necessarily proving my point, but Wright got 13 carries in the New England game where we won 15-10 and he had 86 yards for a 6.6 YPC average. That was his lone double digit carry game, and to reward his good performance, he never got more than 7 carries the rest of the season. WTG MM!

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t like the way they used their RBs at all. Achane needs space. He’s not a guy I want slamming into the LOS and trying to make yardage. When lanes aren’t there, he can’t really create one for himself. He’s a guy I try to get in space as much as possible. Wright should’ve been used a lot more. Maybe he wasn’t giving the coaches what they wanted in practice, but I really don’t know why they didn’t take some of the load off Achane and give it to Wright. I’d also put Achane in the slot way more than they did. Even if teams decide to put a corner on him, that gives somebody else better options. Achane should be able to beat any LB in coverage and most corners.

  23. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As I recall, Coach McD stated in a presser that Wright wasn’t up to snuff on the playbook and his assignments… that’s why he didn’t get to see the field as much as we all had hoped.

That was at least the excuse that was given.
