The Pessimists Guide to the Miami Dolphins 2025 Season

Last week I gave you the positives, unfortunately for you guys who actually are optimistic about this season, you might want to skip this one! Realistically, I feel there is a greater chance this team has an unsuccessful season. We went into the draft with an awful lot of holes, and came out with many of the same holes. If you felt we needed only one 2nd tier OG and about 20 DT’s, drafted and undrafted, than you should feel like we nailed this draft. If you thought we needed 2 quality OL, a pass rushing DT/DE and possibly a NT too, two CB’s because Jalen Ramsey and Mike McDaniel don’t get along, and we don’t have a starter on the roster, and potentially a starting safety, this wasn’t your draft. In addition, if you felt we needed to have a better draft than our division rivals, well, we didn’t. Each team in our division, including the Buffalo Bills who own us, the New England Patriots who we have been owning, and also the NY Jets who we’ve been having our way with in recent years, ALL drafted better than we do, they have more cap space and better rosters than we do.

Three more negatives for you, Chris Grier is still the GM, Mike McDaniel is still the Head Coach, and Tua Tagovailoa is still the starting QB. You can make it four if you want to add that Stephen Ross still is the majority owner of the team. We had 10 picks going into the 2025 NFL Draft but came away with only 8 players. With Chris Grier as GM, it’s a necessary annual ritual to trade up and waste a pick or two doing so. This draft we traded up in RD 2 from pick #48 to pick #37 to take OG Jonah Savaiinaea, (Jo-nuh) (Sah-vai-uh-nigh-uh). Grier gave up our 2025 3rd RD pick in order to snare the big Samoan. He also traded away a 2025 4th RD pick (#116) for a 2026 3rd RD Pick from the Texans. Next year will be a strong QB class, so having that extra 3rd RD pick might come in handy.

I think we did well with the Kenneth Grant pick, he should be fun to watch, and Jonah Savaiinaea might work out at OG but I really wanted 2 OL in this draft. We seem to get bit by the injury bug every season on the O-line, and next on the depth chart is LT Ryan Hayes, LG Jackson Carman, C Andrew Myer, RG Liam Eichenberg and RT Larry Borom. If you feel confident with the depth there, God Bless you, you truly are an optimistic person. We brought in a lot of big bodies that everyone seems lit about, but it’s not all that different from what we did last season. We brought in lots of bodies, signed a host of 1 year contract guys and once again I stress big time, we got super lucky that 38 year old Calais Campbell was still around and decided to play here. This season we drafted Kenny Grant in RD 1, Jordan Phillips in RD 5, Zeek Biggers in RD 7, and maybe 10 other DT’s as UDFA’s. Again, lots of bodies, and I know some of you think we got a draft steal in Jordan Phillips. Heck, maybe we ddi, but will Mike McDaniel actually let him get playing time? Same goes for RB Ollie Gordon in the 6th RD. Ooooh, we got a BIG BACK! Yeah, we frigging traded up in last year’s draft, forfeiting a very valuable 2025 3rd RD pick to draft RB Jaylen Wright in RD 4. Sweet move Chris, love it! Mike McDaniel can only manage to find 67 carries for the guy we traded away a future 3rd Pick for. What on earth makes you believe he’s going to let a 6th RD pick see the field?

Now on to the $212M wonder, our QB Tua Tagovailoa. We got him a Samoan OG who has only blocked for Samoan QB’s! That oughta fix the O-line! Maybe we can clone him and he can play all 5 spots! Will this potentially help Tua play well against good teams? Will we belong on the same playing field as the Buffalo Bills and QB Josh Allen who is 8-1 against Tua, which would then make Tua 1-8 against Josh Allen. If that seems ugly, Allen has 23 passing TD’s, Tua 9. Allen has 5 INT’s, Tua has 10 INT’s. Josh Allen has a 106.9 rating. Tua 80.5. I see Dolphins fans on Twitter talking sh*t about Josh Allen and pontificating the greatness of Tua every day. These delusional imbeciles are clueless and no more fan than any Dolphins fan with their heads screwed on correctly. I root for the team, not specifically for one deficient player who can’t stay on the field and when he does, fails to compete against better teams and doesn’t rise to the level of the competition or the importance of the game. These are facts, not opinions, it’s been proven time and time again.

Yes, some of you are excited about 5th RD pick CB Jason Marshall. It’s actually possible he could start for us, because Jalen Ramsey and HC Mike McDaniel don’t see eye to eye, or at least that’s how it’s been reported. Either way, we gave Ramsey a pay raise just 6 months ago, and now we need to take a loss on either trading him or outright cutting him. Maybe UDFA from 2025 Storm Duck starts. Or, maybe we spend a good amount of cap space on young Asante Samuel Jr. who is still available due to a shoulder injury. That might actually be a good move except we know he’ll stay injured if we pick him up and pay him, right? At Safety, we picked up 2 safeties in FA that could potentially start. SS Ifeatua Melifonwu and FS Ashtyn Davis. Both have started, but neither has started much over the last 3 seasons, Melifonwu has 10 starts in 51 games and Ashtyn Davis has 6 starts in 51 games. Maybe we’ll get a combo of Melifonwu, Davis, Dante Trader Jr. who we drafted in RD 5, and Patrick Mcmorris who we drafted last season in RD 6. Maybe it will all work out.

At OLB, we have Chop Robinson returning from a successful rookie campaign. We also have 2 guys who unfortunately can’t stay on th field and stay healthy. OLB Jaelan Phillips is truly a courageous fella, he has rehabbed with such fervor each of the last 2 seasons, one from an achilles tear, and then last season from a friendly fire incident where he got hit by his own teammate helmet to knee. 3 seasons in a row, 3 rehabs. OLB Bradley Chubb missed the entire season last year so one would think he should be ready to go for 2025. We also have Quinton Bell, Mo Kamara, and Cameron Goode. Unfortunately, once you get past the first 3, as with most teams, it really falls off quality wise. If Phillips, Chubb and Chop all stay healthy and play well, this defense could be legit, especially if a few of the horde of defensive tackles we brought in can play as well, but then again what about that secondary? UGH!

What about the rest of the offense not named Tua Tagovailoa? RB Devon Achane is an exciting playmaker who will probably see more touches than anyone else on the offense. He’ll probably see more passes come his way, maybe less carries though if we decide to actually use RB’s Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon in pursuit of not being such a soft serve type of team. Do we actually vote WR Tyreek Hill in as Captain again? Hill loves to troll on social media but at least this team in his latest trolling, he got it right, and omitted QB Tua Tagovailoa from his top 5. WR Jaylen Waddle has shown he can be a #1 WR but had a down year and basically has been second fiddle since Tyreek Hill arrived. TE Jonnu Smith was fantastic last season and was probably our best offensive player along with De”Von Achane. We picked up a TE as an UDFA that BBMike really likes, Jalin Conyer, He’s stuck behind projects Tanner and Hayden Rucci, as well as blocking TE Pharoah Brown who we scooped up in FA. Brown should help in the blocking game, and add a few catches too, Anyone think we need another Jalen/Jaylen, Jaelan/Jalin? I really liked the addition of WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, the WR corps desperately needed a bigger bodies receiver who is physical and is a huge red zone threat. Westbrook-Ikhine had 9 TD receptions last season, which is one more than the combination of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. I also like slot WR Malik Washington in this offense and in the return game. Will backup QB’s Zach Wilson or newly drafted Quinn Ewers see the field this season? That’s almost a certainty with “The Frajeel”, it’s just a matter of when, and for how long.

I think I am in the middle of the last 2 articles. lol

Actually, Conyer was M13’s guy. I just got on M’s bandwagon.

    Thanks MikeE!

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We can’t rule out OL Braeden Daniels. He was talked about a lot during his draft process and we stole him off another teams PS last year.

Backup center Meyer looked good last preseason also.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rule him out for what? To be a solid backup for either James Daniels or Savaiinaea? Unless James Daniels has a setback, or even worse, Savaiinaea isn’t ready (which would look absolutely awful for Grier), what are we not ruling him out for?

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Mike – I think I’m more skewed towards this article. I have no reason to have faith in anything these fucknuts do for this team. I just finished listening to Chris Perkins on the Joe Rose Show and he’s also very pessimistic on our team this season, spoke about a lot of the same things I bring up in this article. The way they throw money around and gave it to Hill, Waddle, Ramsey and then he also reminded me (It’s the most important reason I hate Tua) of when Tua got on the megaphone and was screaming “Show me the money”. Where’s the fucking leadership on this team? Do you think a Harbaugh led team would have allowed Justin Herbert to do that? Sean McVeigh led team would allow Stafford to do that? NO FUCKING WAY!!!! Stop being their friends and cheerleaders and hold these fuckers accountable and explain to them how bad a look it is. If I was there I would have knocked that fucking megaphone out of his hand and put him out for the season with a concussion. Can’t let the players run the team, and it’s part of the reason why Ramsey wants out. he knows this team isn’t right, besides the fact that he’s just a disruptive SOB in his own right.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

My biggest worry on the OL is backup OT. My early 2026 mock drafts that I have not been posting for Tim’s sake (LOL), I have been taking a solid OT who projects to play OT and not projected to move inside.

That and the best CB available, Jermod McCoy.

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rock, I checked out that site. Not bad. I did look at their depth chart for us and it is not accurate with guys who left in FA and not the whole roster listed.

One thing I found funny was they have photos up with the player names and they have a picture of Jim Carey up there for Zach Wilson.

Too bad that this is FALSE and it IS your opinion.

  9. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

My issue is I just don’t trust these guys to know how to build and shape a successful team. I haven’t seen it. I don’t believe barely getting into the playoffs and getting your ass kicked is success. I’m sorry but barely being mediocre for decades doesn’t engender faith.

Now, I do believe every year is a clean slate, to a certain degree, but it doesn’t mean all teams are built equally. I may pay less attention to the team and the NFL in general, but I still root for the Dolphins to win every week. I still expect them to win every game. Insane, stupid…yes, but even a fan as skeptical as I can be hopes for the best for their team.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You’d have to be crazy to trust them. They appear more and more like they’re doing this on the fly with no particular path or strategy. Like giving Ramsey an extension and pay raise and then a few months broadcasting to the NFL that you have differences with that player and have mutually agreed to part ways. If that doesn’t make you say WTF, nothing does!

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

You brought up one of the issues I had with drafting Jonah. I don’t think he can play OT in the NFL, and there were plenty of guys available who I felt were better OT prospects while still being a guy I would draft to be a guard. I think you can throw Jonah in at RT but not for long.

  11. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    ▪ The Dolphins signed seven draft picks including defensive tackles Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers, cornerback Jason Marshall Jr., safety Dante Trader Jr., running back Ollie Gordon II and quarterback Quinn Ewers.

    ▪ Grant, a first-round pick, got a four-year deal worth just less than $22 million with a $12.6 million signing bonus, according to Over The Cap. He’s the only draftee that has a fifth-year option on his deal, which is standard for all first-round picks.

    ▪ Phillips, who was the first of Miami’s three fifth-round picks, signed a four-year deal worth $4.65 million and received a $458,000 signing bonus.

Marshall received a four-year deal worth $4.62 million and received a $425,000 signing bonus. Trader signed for $4.61 million and received a $414,784 signing bonus.

    ▪ Gordon signed a four-year deal worth $4.47 million and received a $272,664 signing bonus.

    ▪ Biggers inked a four-year deal worth $4.33 million, and received a $131,576 signing bonus.

    ▪ Ewers, the final draftee, received a $4.3 million and received a $101,668 signing bonus.

    ▪ The only drafted rookie who hasn’t signed is offensive linemen Jonah Savaiinaea, a second-round pick.

  12. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

WPLG’s Brandon Liguori shared on Thursday that the Dolphins will face the Washington Commanders in Week 11 in Madrid.

Well that’s one “home game” we aren’t going to have advantage in and will probably loses.

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Kneeland Hibbett is the only long snapper on the roster now. Unless we have some later additions it looks like it’s his job to lose.

Question: is it pronounced Knee-land or Kneel-and? We don’t need any Kneelers.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You can always make believe we drafted your man crush Justin Herbert when you see Hibbert’s jersey. lol. MARACAS!!!

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Fortunately, the next draft is looking good at QB, OL and CB.

Unfortunately, Grier will probably still be making the picks.

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Kenneth Grant’s 21.9m contract is 100% fully guaranteed. His cap hit this year is 3.99m.

The rest of them did not crack the top 51 cap, only JS will.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – The stats bear out the truth in what I’m saying about Tua. I have shown them to you so many times you think you’d remember this by now. He sucks when the level of competition gets better, and the importance of the game increases. It’s fact, not opinion. His record against these teams stands by itself. Look at his record against the Bills. It’s fugly as fuck, and Allen is awesome against us, no matter where the game is.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

you can say fact fact fact all day. Doesn’t make it one. His record against “good defenses” is much better than his record against “good offenses” this is a defensive problem. NOT a TUA problem. I could go and scour the game logs to show all the pefect passes that were dropped and the off sides penalties that killed drives, but it much easier for me just to post unsubstantiated responses to your unsubstantiated comments.

Mike, I took your advice with your first sentence. 🤪

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Kenneth Grant will be an impact player but we really need Jordan Phillips to be that too for us to be a good defense. Jones plays hard and gives you solid snaps at NT and Sieler is really good. After that I’m not sure about our depth.

  27. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

7 draft picks signed, Savaiinaea only one that hasn’t, because Houston signed pick 34 to a fully guaranteed contract for first time in NFL history for 2nd rounder, causing issues for all other 2nds

  28. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

good interviews today with all 8 draftees, think all 8 right now have a spot on the 53, it’s there job not to screw it up, add in Conyers to that too

was most impressed with Trader’s interview, reminded me of Minkah with the football intelligence, and the study of tape talk

also Grant and Savaiinaea were impressive

hard to leave Phillips out too, his first question was about how his wrestling translates to football, he gave a detailed answer on leverage with elbow and triceps as major focus points

    the 7th rounders were meh

  29. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

say what you want about Grier, I’ve said plenty of negative things, but I think he nailed this draft

we needed help on the lines, also a change of culture to bigger more physical, big checks there

We needed depth he added S, QB, RB, and DTs

taking a CB at 98 would’ve been nice, but there’s no way that player was starting over the current guys, very hard to start right away at CB

  30. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If you felt we needed only one 2nd tier OG and about 20 DT’s, drafted and undrafted, than you should feel like we nailed this draft.

I felt we needed 1 stud OG, so the trade up was necessary

we needed 1 stud DT and at least 1 for depth, Phillips is intriguing with his wrestling and gym ratness, he’s a steal in the 5th

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Can’t necessarily say that now. If he was a stud he would have went RD 1 before a lot of other OL who were taken, but he wasn’t, and he may have lasted to pick #48 despite the noise that someone was taking him. We needed a CB or S, and we didn’t take one until RD 5. I can’t stop you from feeling good about it, but we far from nailed this draft, in fact this draft might be the final nail in Grier’s coffin.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am going to appreciate the players that we picked. But I agree with you on waste involved now and especially historically

  31. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think(?) it was Tom Brady who said it’s messed up that players can wear whatever jersey number they want. Ever since the NFL ‘big bang’ went boom, one would be able to identify their positional opponent based on their jersey number.

Today, one can’t do that. It’s one of the rare instances where I agree with Tom Brady.

So as a QB is getting flushed out of the pocket and panic sets in, the QB doesn’t know if his receiver is up against a D-Lineman, a LB, a CB, or even a S.

Part of me says, ‘GOOD! It’s a passing-league today anyway! It’s about time Defenses can use whatever they can to slow it down’. The other part of me says, ‘BAD… we’re getting WAY off the basic standards that made the NFL great, and turning the league into a joke of itself’.

I realize the positional number changes seem innocuous at face value… but it SERVES A PURPOSE! And that is exactly why there were positional numbers to begin with… it wasn’t just an arbitrary idea without merit.

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

don’t give a shit about the drafts from our division opponents, jets and expats have a ways to go to catch up, so who they drafted isn’t going to vault them to the playoffs, bills win with or without their draftees

  33. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think that for FAR too long, Steve Ross and company felt that Goodell’s new NFL meant ‘sandlot football’ or even ‘flag football’: this is likely why we’ve assembled a track team on both sides of the ball in recent years.

But if ya can’t control the trenches, you are still DOOMED.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

it was MMs wet dream to have that track team, Ross only wants to win, doesn’t care how it’s achieved

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ollie isn’t that big back like Derrick Henry, he’s more of the Eric Dickerson build

he does run with power, but he doesn’t have that bone bruising frame we keep hearing about

should be in on passing downs to block, something we didn’t have last year

Wright had the OL blocking for him last year, that couldn’t block for shit, he was drafted as a Mostert replacement, it will payoff this year with a little blocking

  35. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

there’s plenty of blame for Tua against the playoffs teams, surely he hasn’t played well in such games, but Crabbs has a breakdown of how bad the team’s units have been and it’s not pretty, so Tua’s fault yes, then add the other 52

that’s where the culture change comes in starting on the lines, then RB, WR, the 2 FA Ss are massive and cut

Hopefully year 1 of the culture change shows we can compete against the Buffalos and Titans😜

  36. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

our S room is more avg, than good, but they individually can do some things above avg, I expect all 5, including Campbell to be rotating in based on situation and the group as a whole to be decent and not the reason we win or lose

Regrettably, the Dolphins essentially shot down questions when asked about a possible reconciliation with Jalen Ramsey. There has been nothing to indicate they’re going to make him fulfill his contract, which is inexplicable to me. Sieler, today on Jalen and Calais: “It’s tough losing guys of that caliber. Two great players.”

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Dolphins dodge questions about Jalen Ramsey’s future as saga continues

This is the first time Miami has taken a more direct stance with the media regarding the situation, and it clearly shows frustration when they apparently tell the media not to ask about it.

Earlier in the week there was increasing speculation the Dolphins could simply release him after June 1. That would be an absolutely horrible option for Miami, but it does seem as though a return to South Florida is growing increasingly unlikely.

Unlike the Dolphins, Rams head coach Sean McVay is answering questions about a potential reunion. McVay is careful not to break any NFL rules by saying “it is still ongoing.” McVay and Ramsey have stayed in touch on a personal level since Ramsey was traded to the Dolphins.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Earlier this offseason, Armando Salguero of Outkick.com said Ramsey has had enough and wants to play for a winner. It has also been reported he and McDaniel don’t get along. If and when Ramsey leaves, it will create another hole in the secondary, and the loss of yet another veteran leader.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, MM looks like a little boy running around catching butterflies at the reunion while the grown men drink beer and play horse shoes.

However, Ramsey is obviously being a little bitch. A player of his caliber should look past any riff and be a pro.

You would think Weaver could fix things but that just shows how much of a bitch Ramsey is.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

BTW, that’s what BBM’s reunions were like except BBM was not catching butterflies. BBM and his cousins were sneaking and filling the big tackle box with beers and take it down by the river like we were going fishing. lol

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – I have no doubt that Jalen Ramsey is a pain in the ass, he’s one of those guys that wants things his way and feels he’s earned it. Grier and McDaniel had to know this, when they first got him, and they absolutely should have known it before they gave him that raise and extension. It’s just a bad look for this team, another one among many and now we basically lose a player and his cap space for nothing, unless they can somehow work a trade.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Mike – How are you feeling? All good?

  46. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Agree with you.

Ramsey should be providing an example of what a winning player looks like, and not act like a whiney little bitch, me, me, me.

    Hill quits on his team.

Players need to be held accountable!

Who are the fucking leaders on this team?! Geez, loueez….

Numb nuts. Just try being honest in the first place and not play the NFL hype game and see how that works.

Sanders was a third rounder, at best, but that didn’t stop the media from riding that hype train because of who he is and the drama they knew they’d create good or bad. Gaslighting assholes.

I’m not as worried as most of you about the roster

I’m always worried about health bc that can derail us

but I think we made the right moves by going big

if our QB, pass rushers and our OL can stay healthy o think we have a good team

I’m a little more concerned about people in the lockerroom who don’t want to be here

I mean two players: Ramsey and Tyreke Hill

Ramsey makes us a better team, and I think he will be a professional if he in on the roster in 25 – but that said, if he doesn’t want to be here and the trade is there I think you have to do it

Hill is a tougher situation. And given he quit last year in the final game of the season on us 1 I have bigger concerns about his bailing on this team

    I have a trade suggestion:

Tyreke Hill for Chris Olave straight up

the Saints are tanking this year

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tyreek would be a 1yr rental. They would probably want a pick with Tyreek for Olave.

Maybe trade them Tyreek and Zack Wilson for Olave and a pick. It would have to be a post 6/1 trade. Wilson’s contract is 100% guaranteed and most of it in a signing bonus spread out over 4 void years at almost 1m a year.

Olave would only cost us 3.3m this year but would cost about 15.5m in 2026 (5th year option).

We didn’t want to trade a 3rd RD pick to get Savaiinaea, and we didn’t want Grier to basically put CB and S on the back burner like we didn’t need guys to come in and start. That’s what he did last season with the O-line and D-line, so this year, he chose CB and S. Every year he’s leaving big holes on the roster.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

better to get 2 quality guys, than 4 JAGs

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Better when you have guys already on the roster. There were like 9 CB’s and a couple of safeties in RD 3, before and after our pick at #98. S Xavier Watts went at #96, don’t be so silly. Listen, Grier put us in the hole in the first place by mismanaging the cap and the roster. You want to crawl up his ass, go ahead, don’t expect me to follow though. We have nothing legit at CB and we have two journeymen at S.

I had heard this at the start of Day 3 of the draft. I just couldn’t find the tweet to post it. But, here you go:

The New England Patriots were reportedly eyeing Jonah Savaiinaea as a possibility for their No. 38 overall selection in the 2025 NFL draft before the Miami Dolphins jumped ahead of them and snagged the offensive lineman at No. 37 overall.

“There was a little bit of a debate about who we were going to pick,” Patriots executive Eliot Wolf told reporters after Day 2 of the draft. “Ultimately, one of the players we were talking about got drafted, so it didn’t end up mattering.”

“According to multiple league sources, the player that they were discussing was Arizona guard/tackle Jonah Savaiinaea,” long time Patriots reporter Greg Bedard said on a podcast. “He was the guy. And the Dolphins happened to, all of a sudden, jump in front of the Patriots sending a third round pick to the Raiders. They jumped in front of the Patriots and took him.”

We had TWO opportunities to have a 3rd round pick this Draft. One we gave up last draft to select Wright in the 4th. And obviously, this year we gave one up (our compensatory 3rd rounder) to move up for Big Jonah.

3rd round draft picks don’t grow on trees and are quite valuable.

Reps from each team scout these guys, go to the same pro days, etc. Teams talk. There are attempted trades and conversations happening behind the scenes all during the offseason and all through the draft. And on and on.

Maybe we got info from another team the Pets were interested in trading for their stud guard. Or some other random bit that coincided with the Pets scouts being excited over the guy at his pro day. Who the eff knows?

We hear about stuff like this all the time- that this team is high on this player, etc. We see teams jump other teams all the time because they were both interested in the same player. How could they possibly know?! I mean the Pets did take 3 olinemen overall and 2 in the first 3 rds. 🤔

But now it’s just BS because possibly having an idea they were interested in the same player as us doesn’t fit the negative narrative? Forget that it came from a Pets beat reporter.

It shouldn’t come as some huge shock that NFL teams know more on draft day and in the moment about what is happening behind closed doors than the fans do.

If this guy ends up being a stud for us on the line for 5 to 10 years, nobody is going to be saying ‘yeah, but the Dolphins gave up an extra 3rd’.

If we get 3 or 4 good starters out of the draft and a backup or two, nobody is going to be saying ‘yeah, but that 3rd’.

It’ll all come down to the players we drafted.

All that being said, I do get being down on Grier, so I understand that this on and on about the 3rd rd pick is more about fans being in their feelings and giving no benefit of the doubt on any perceived questionable decisions that haven’t played out yet.

Grier is the one who has to change that perception, so hopefully this effing guard turns out to be a dang stud so we can stop hearing about this 3rd rd pick, lol (I don’t know his name well enough to spell yet.)

As I stated, it’s all under the bridge now. All we can do as fans right now is to hope for the best. That, and… as a beaten down fanbase, prepare for the worst. Time will tell and I’m hoping for the VERY BEST!

the rumor about the pats wanting to take Savianaea are as likely as any rumor we hear about a player a team wants and didn’t get

sometimes those rumors are verified years later but you never really know. Hard to it much stick in rumors about who teams want

but that doesn’t mean it’s not true either

if Greir got his guy – it doesn’t matter if it would have happened or not

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

but we can look at the picks that were made and I think it’s safe to say their would have been a dropoff after Savianaea

the other picks I. The 2nd round were Belton, Esery and Ratledge

The guys I thought going in that were 2nd rounder were Mbow and Millum who would have been good fits but turns out the rest of the nfl didn’t evaluate those two guys so high

So I kind of think the trade up was justified if you know you needed to take OL in the first couple of rounds

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And even if the rumor they wanted him is true, it doesn’t have to mean we knew they wanted that particular guy. Maybe we had some inside knowledge they would go oline, or maybe we projected they wanted an interior guy and Savianaea was much higher on our board than any other guy so we jumped them on the possibility they might feel the same and grab him.

We just don’t know everything the teams know; it’d be weird if we did.

This is the daytime soap drama for males aspect of football that I enjoy, lol.

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – It’s definitely possible that the rumor was true, or the boy who cried wolf (traded up to draft an O-lineman and traded away a 3rd RD pick and more just 4 years ago, and has history of behaving like this time and time again) just cried wolf again . . . You want to give him the benefit of the doubt, go right ahead, he’ll get none from me. What spooked him last year with Jaylen Wright that he had to trade this year’s 3rd RD pick? Then we use trade up player for 67 snaps.

Look at the Eagles, they traded up one spot in RD 1 to get probably the best LB in this draft (Jihaad Campbell) and gave up nothing. They stayed put at 64 and took the S a lot of the guys here wanted. Howie Roseman doesn’t give up picks, and he routinely makes good choices. Grier just has no plan, other than getting certain guys and sacrificing more picks to get them. That’s not how teams win.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To add, Roseman drafted a QB who may not necessarily be as good as a passer as our QB, but he built a team around him and made him a better player because the team was better, and didn’t throw away the future (draft picks) or trade for players with bad contracts and ruin the salary cap. My sons brother-in-law is a big Eagles fan and he told me they have 13 picks in next year’s draft. They just keep building, while we keep rebuilding, and somehow, the guy in charge who keeps drafting and hiring poorly and fails to build a good team keeps his job. Go figure . . .

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Pinpointing one thing in the draft and saying look at that vs look at this doesn’t mean anything. The Ravens had two players out of last year’s draft that contributed to their team in any significant manner, the rest were either busts or haven’t developed yet. We had 3 or 4 contributors from the same draft. Does that mean I can argue we’re better at drafting than the Ravens? lol.

We can agree that Grier isn’t a great GM without getting into the weeds of minutiae. I can also agree he’s had some poor drafts. But he’s also had some pretty good picks and had us playing with extra draft capital for years. Ross got a couple of those extra picks taken with his shenanigans.

I’d argue it’s the way he builds the team that is the bigger problem, not the way he conducts the draft. Trading picks for guys like Chubb and Ramsey, letting guys we did draft like Wilkins and Hunt go, giving extensions out like candy to satisfy malcontents impacting future year salary caps. Letting a stud like Calais go without an offer, not keeping Van Ginkel, I could go on and on with the poor roster moves this guy makes.

I’m not giving Grier the benefit of the doubt in this draft. I’m simply not judging this trade based on the last trade he made which I disliked, nor am I judging the draft until we actually see the players.

If we get enough starters and backups from the draft, then I couldn’t care less that we gave up a 3rd pick for one of the guys, especially if the guy is a stud.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The Eagles have set themselves up nicely. It’d be great to be in that position.

The Rams won a SB a few years ago going a completely different route- by doing basically what Grier tried to do but failed. The rams didn’t have a 1st rd pick for like 6 years leading up to the SB, and didn’t have a 2nd rd pick a few of those years either. There are many ways to skin a cat.

Kong – I think I alluded to more than just one thing, I gave a few examples. Doesn’t matter, even if Savaiinaea is a good player for us, we all knew going into the draft that we had holes on the D-line, O-line, two at CB, and 1 or 2 at S. It would have been nice not to have to wait until RD 5 to try and fix all that, and that’s where a lot of my frustration lies.

I only used the Ravens last draft, but you understand my counter, right? We can each point to single data points (or multiples) that don’t really prove anything by themselves, there are lots of other things that factor in. Our GM got us five 1st rd picks and four 2nd rd picks over a two year span. 9 picks in the first two rds in two years. Six of those players are still on the team, although one of them is Eich. Does that mean anything right now? Did it then? Not really. But if we’d followed with some real success, he’d be considered a genius.

I think Grier has had up and down success in the drafts, but the overall point that the Eagles have a better GM is pretty unassailable. They are set up for continued success, but I would continue to argue it’s a lot more than just the drafting.

For us, we tried to go the Rams route and failed miserably. Bad choice by our FO. Because of that, our roster was filled with holes. It’s not realistic to expect we were going to fill all our holes with one draft no matter what we did. We all knew it going into this offseason.

So I guess I just had different expectations. An extra 3rd wasn’t going to solve everything or change the trajectory of this team. This was always going to be a team with holes. First and foremost, we needed to address the lines. We did, although I’d still like us to sign another quality vet.

I think we’ll continue to see a measured approach to building the team, next year we have a full complement of picks and more. I’m fearful Grier will still be here, much to our dismay.

IDK, maybe I’m just inured to the whole mess and I am giving a pass for pedestrian results without being aware of it. I figure while Grier is leading, we’re going to be one heck of a mediocre team, the draft will probably turn out to be pretty darn mediocre, and we’ll have a mediocre season, lol.
